The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is out and it’s everything we hoped it would be! Well, not for Dallas, but he probably just misses Rosario Dawson as Persephone. On the movie side of things, we’ve got Argylle, the spy movie with lots of A-listers and even more plot twists. Was Argylle as much fun as Matthew Vaughn’s other movies? Does Demi have a new second favorite Disney+ show? (Willow will never be dethroned) And what are Gaby’s thoughts on Henry Cavill’s tongue in his newest movie trailer? Listen if you wanna find out! You can also find us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts!

Alright we're gonna talk about BATTLE DOME
You asked for off-topic content, so we're gonna talk about one of my obsessions from the past year: BATTLE DOME.
Tumblr media
I know there's a lot of Y2K-era nostalgia now, but if you lived through the Bush years, you probably remember that the early 2000s were a cultural wasteland of amped-up, testosterone-addled, hyper-sexualized garbage.
At the top of that pile was BATTLE DOME, a short-lived TV game show that aired for two years in syndication, presumably to low viewership. BATTLE DOME attempted to blend the over-the-top athletic competition of American Gladiators with the hypermasculine, character-driven soap opera of professional wrestling.
The result was maybe the stupidest show ever to air on television: an extraordinarily dangerous game show where competitors regularly walked away with serious injuries, interrupted by scripted melodrama that played like it was written by and for horny middle schoolers. It is spectacular, and it's almost too unintelligible to be offensive.
The pitch for Battle Dome is simple: three random competitors compete in a series of demanding physical events against THE WARRIORS, an ensemble cast of underemployed Los Angeles-based bodybuilders, stuntmen, and MMA fighters, who have come together here to play a collection of cultural stereotypes and beat the absolute shit out of the hapless contestants.
Tumblr media
Here's one of the warriors, Mike O'Dell, a grotesquely muscular dude presented as a white-clad golden god with uncomfortable Aryan overtones. He's at least a head taller than all the contestants and could probably eat them.
Tumblr media
There's also T-Money, played BY A YOUNG PRE-FAME TERRY CREWS IN HIS FIRST ACTING ROLE. Getting him on this show was an incredible casting coup in hindsight.
Every event on Battle Dome has a simple objective, like knocking your opponent off the monkey bars. Except this is Battle Dome, so the monkey bars are 15 feet off the ground. And the bars are shaking. And there's a massive man kicking you in the chest.
Tumblr media
They call it Aerial Kickboxing.
But the real highlight of Battle Dome are the terrible wrestling plotlines they interject between (or sometimes even during) the events. They're usually arbitrary, poorly written, and just an excuse to make the beefy men fight each other. In this episode, T-Money is pissed at O'Dell because he's underperforming.
Tumblr media
After an episode's worth of O'Dell and T-Money throwing barbs at each other, they finally must come to blows. Bobbie Haven, the "sexretary" to the Battle Dome Chairman, demands that the warriors must compete in ULTIMATE BODY SLAM to decide who is the number one warrior!
What is ULTIMATE BODY SLAM, you ask?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've never been into pro wrestling, but I get the sense that part of the fun of pro wrestling is being a "mark," suspending your disbelief and buying into the fake reality. I do not know how you can do that for Battle Dome. The problem is that the Battle Dome warriors are competing against real humans, which makes their fake absurd antics even faker and more absurd. There is no kayfabe. There is no hermetically sealed world of Battle Dome fiction. This is more like Legends of the Hidden Temple with punching.
But you know what's definitely not fake on Battle Dome? The violence. This show is brutal. Concussions are received. Bones are broken. Even the actors aren't immune to injury. Terry Crews said years later that he almost got set on fire once during an event.
The tagline for the show was "Real Warriors, Real Pain," and at least the second one of those is correct. Pain is the only real thing in the bizarre world of Battle Dome, where emotional truths have been replaced by body slams.
This is clearly not a good television show, and it is incredibly fun. 20+ years removed from airing, it's much easier to laugh at. If I wanted to show someone what American culture felt like at the turn of the millennium, I would show them Battle Dome. I would show them its bacchanalia of testosterone, its bizarre miscalculation of human drama, its Tommy Wiseau-style acting and understanding of women, its unrelenting grinder of human bodies, and then I would get popcorn.
Tumblr media
PS: Here are the two announcers for Battle Dome: Steve Albert (right), professional sportscaster; and Scott Ferrall (left), shock jock and professional feral man, dressed like he's about to go on a cruise inside a surrealist painting. Albert does the play-by-plays, while Ferrall screams incoherent horny color commentary in a gravely voice that sounds like he's been smoking six packs of cigarettes a day since kindergarten. They are truly a dynamic duo.

the BIGGEST difference in the movie and show is that for the percy jackson move , Logan Lerman looked like (and in the movie-verse is) a high schooler which takes away the whole POINT of the book being a sort of coming-of-age fantasy book if the protagonist is a hot high school teen with a six pack . and do i even need to mention Annabeth in the movies??? they took away her personality and made her a generic "protagonist love interest and damsel in distress" LIKE SHE IS THE CHILD OF ATHENA WHAT R U DOING??? and GROVER??? they took away what made grover , well grover and it was so frustrating but the SERIES casted a child actor who actually looks like a 12 yr old to play the characters!! and bonus , walker is a HUGE fan of the pjo series and even improvised some scenes that he thought fit percy's characters the best?? omg??? also the relationship in the tv series between the main trio is peak , and Leah Sava Jeffries in the series WAS AMAZING she captured annabeths sassy "ugh why is this kid here" so well!! , like THIS is representation disney!! she captured annabeth's personality so on POINT and Aryan Simhadri was PERFECT in capturing grover's personality so well (and im based i love his little fukin horns they are so adorable) like the series was SPECTACULAR and EVERYONE should watch it and forget the movies even existed

Angry woc anon here, lol. I totally agree with you, what a lovely response. And thanks for absorbing my rant, lol -- I'm so pissy about this and have so few outlets. And uh, here comes another one? It really is so hard in fandoms. B/c like, just as you said, we're all here to discuss her, so ofc we're going to talk about things like who she's dating. And yeah, she's a public figure, and like ... public figures affect the political landscape. And that can be fuzzy. But I feel like ... as you said, there are people treating this like actual activism. And I have some sympathy for that, especially for younger fans -- this is the only sphere they really have a voice. But I think something that is really true about female-dominated fandoms is 1. we're eager to tear ourselves/the women we love apart b/c there's a built in cookie/jolt of self-esteem/whatever for the girl who shits on other girls, and 2. we police the shit out of our fandom, out of all proportion to real-world issues, b/c we know, on some level, how huge those issues are, and are terrified by them, and our attendant helplessness. Standing up to actual men is terrifying and subjects you to vicious, insane cruelty. And we're dealing w/ this shit irl every day of our lives. So we freak the fuck out at Taylor like she's suddenly got an Aryan Nation tattoo and not, yknow, getting some sleazy-but-worshipful rebound dick after a tough breakup. Because it feels like doing something, when actually doing something is so, so, so much harder, especially for women. Tbh I feel like Azaleia Banks in the only person with the right take rn -- like, girl, you can do better! You deserve better! But also, goddamn, this breakup is devastating, she's on a completely unprecedented tour, she's living under insane scrutiny every damn day, she's a once-in-a-generation genius, and because she's a woman, she also needs to be very hot and in high heels as she does it. And she's 33. She knows it only gets harder from here. So, like ... I get it. Joe checked out, and MH, for his faults, clearly KNOWS she's spectacular. I get it. It's not great, but shit, I get it, and I'm going to give her grace. Like we do for men, even when they do actually objectionable shit. The truth is, which I think a lot of "THIS IS ACTIVISM!" Swifties don't want to face, is that Taylor dating MH effectively doesn't fucking matter. No one is looking at this and saying "Gee, I'm going to join the alt-right because Taylor Swift is soothing herself with a sleazy indie dude!" Even just in terms of "what is this normalizing" ... as a social worker who has had to reckon w/ that question in a variety of contexts, it's patently absurd to freak out over this and not, like, the thousands of songs on the radio every day that treat women of color like animals. Or how about the ones that glorify beating them and treating them like shit? Or like, the thousands of online spaces that explicitly tell men that Jews are the reason they're stuck in a dead-end job? I know a lot of people think this is whataboutism, but there is a material difference no one who actually does this work can ignore between these things. There are orders of magnitude that matter here, and ignoring them is putting one's own petty, privileged bs before actual, active suffering. The truth is, the vast, vast majority of people who like Taylor don't know who MH is and never will. They hear there's some "drama" and shrug. And the other truth is, this has blown up because we looooove getting together to rake a woman over the coals. I know that BECAUSE I'm a woman of color with a background that spans multiple countries. No matter where I am, I can depend on one fact: People love hating women. This just isn't that fucking different.
i'm not lying when i say reading this ask made me really emotional because not only do i feel like you understand the depth of my feelings on this topic (the misogyny and racism, but also the way the fandom is handling it), but you've also articulated feelings i didn't know i had. i'm really grateful that you took the time to express this and share it with me because, truthfully, i feel less alone in my perspective. and i know we've been saying "it's not that deep," but like. it's not, but it is.
that last part probably didn't make sense. but i just want to call out a few things in your ask that really stood out to me and i want to emphasize:
But I feel like ... as you said, there are people treating this like actual activism. And I have some sympathy for that, especially for younger fans -- this is the only sphere they really have a voice.
2. we police the shit out of our fandom, out of all proportion to real-world issues, b/c we know, on some level, how huge those issues are, and are terrified by them, and our attendant helplessness. [...] Because it feels like doing something, when actually doing something is so, so, so much harder, especially for women.
There are orders of magnitude that matter here, and ignoring them is putting one's own petty, privileged bs before actual, active suffering.
No matter where I am, I can depend on one fact: People love hating women.

Okay so...PJO Show, Episode 1:
Highlights, first:
Sally & Percy, life itself, all be praised
Grover, Aryan, just a spectacular job, I love his acting, I love the body language he gives off, I love him
I love Chiron and I love his actor even more because I can already see how funny and serious he can be at the same time. He isn't like...manipulative I guess, but more wizened, immortal, dawn of time, as old as Zeus probably, mentor. Basically, he actually does know what he talks about because history is a cycle and the actor does such a good job of portraying it.
The funny moments were actually funny. Big win right there for the show.
“God, like Jesus?” top tier, I laughed out loud for real this time.
“I'm 24, actually.” reminded me that Grover is technically allowed to drink legally, and I imagine now in my fics this is how Annabeth acquires her cigarettes.
SALLY THROWING A ARM OVER PERCY'S TORSO, I CAN'T-
Baby Percy's actor, I love that little dude, I've seen a few of his other movies, and I'm happy he's doing something he clearly enjoys.
The bullies were all excellent, not a single one broke character, none of them acted beyond what's considered wild for rich, troubled kids, good job children!!!!!!
The 'It's Probably Disney But Also The Writer's Room'
Gabe... Okay, I don't like him no matter his casting so I'm happy I didn't fall into that trap, but Disney, c'mon man.
Sally...hmmm not really? I feel like Disney and the Writers don't have the best grasp of her character but given that Sally is only a Eurydice for the 1st book I feel like that's just excusable enough, but if it happens again I'm going to be irritated.
Dodds & Riptide...No. Just...no. I get it, the movies did it, but again, c'mon homie. No.
The Minotaur. I get it, kind of, mostly. The music cutting out, sublime, excellent, eerie. The CGI, ehhhhhhhhhhh. Too quick, too dark, and too quiet, the same issue as anything coming out in fantasy or sci-fi. A stagger, Percy being thrown back as he stabs the Minotaur and getting blurry glimpses of it, a bit more of the movement and the scene could've worked really, really well.
All in all, 5/7 (haha, get it? The Seven, I'll shut up now.) Finding it's footing, just edging excusable, if say by the time we hit LA's and this show hasn't been able to deliver a few of the more vital character (Grover & Pan, Annabeth & Luke & Thalia, Percy & his mom + Poseidon) moments we should all be worried because of how essential those are to the story.

THE day has arrived
The only day that could resurrect my tumblr account. And its... underwhelming to say the least.
I've already watched it two times in a row and both times my conflicted thoughts remained. I guess i'm no longer the target audience for a media piece written for middle schoolers and i have to make peace with that fact.
Solid fancervice, though. Just very watered down. I made a list about the best and the worst:
THE BEST
The places are so on spot. Exactly how i imagined.
Acting is pretty well.
(The previous statement applies to aryan and aryan only)
Professional fanservice. "Sunshine" like wdym "sunshine" 🫠 they recognize walker looks more like book accurate will solace AND THEY EMBRACE IT!!!
The actors were literally born to play their parts! Especially Leah! She's the perfect Annabeth.
THE WORST
Every scene feels so dull!!! I saw people's complaints mainly focusing on things going too fast but i thought people would need a subway surfers video to go under the footage to actually pay attention
Everyone except the trio are OOC, especially Gabe and Mr. D!!!!!
They had all the money and resources to do spectacular fight scenes and then we get that Mrs. Dodds scene...
(like how do you even make a scene with literaly nothing going on??!??!)
The athmosphere is so melancholic and since you cannot really feel the root of it (even if there is many reasons to it, it doesn't translate well to screen for some reason) it feels so superficial.
I saw someone mention the absence of stoll brothers and HELL YEAH MAN they'd cheer up that melancholy so well.
Missing percy's inner monologue is a huge loss, he speaks so rarely too...
If you noticed the difference in lenght the worst parts take up in the post, no you didn't!

EPISODE 15- THE URBAN OASIS OF LODHI GARDEN
Thank you for your extensive adoration and support towards the last blog, you people are legends! So after a long time, I am back with another one of my escapades in this city replenished with purposes. So let's start, with the full moon smiling in the open sky and the air filled with dreams, I started my journey towards the Lodhi Garden when I took the turn towards the Lodhi art district I saw this charmer:
Tumblr media
I couldn't comprehend the beauty of the graffiti. It was so beautiful and out of the world! I stood there for a gleam to believe that the art was not real. I feared that it might jump on me at any moment. I somehow bought my mind out of the portrait and moved towards the gate of Lodhi garden. As I moved inside I was greeted with these gorgeous flowers.
Tumblr media
Ohh, the stunning beauty of the pink Bougainvillea was remarking the commencement of summer. Thrilled by this site I moved forward just to catch a glimpse of one of the best animal interactions of my life.
Tumblr media
I met my friend Donald Duck! out exploring Lodhi garden with his friends and family! I followed them for a moment and they left me at a big stone house as I veered around I read the board which said The Tomb of Sikandar Lodi. I got thrilled by this sign and proceeded inside just to enter a different world. As I entered the main chamber a hoard of bats chased me out of the place and I ran for my life. Fighting the bats I ended up clicking this picture from the top of the tomb.
Tumblr media
After this strange interaction, I moved forward to exploring the loveliness of the garden where many of the most powerful people in the country come for a walk as it was very near to the ministry. After passing through a scenic lake I saw one of the most captivating monuments at the center of the garden.
Tumblr media
The vibe of the place was so vibrant and beautiful that I began wondering what the place might have been at the time it was built. I moved forward and looked at the broken blue marble which was attached to the ends of the monuments I was pretty sure that these were imported from some other country. I hauled and saw one of the most carved mosques I had ever seen.
Tumblr media
I can tell that the mosque was one of a kind and aesthetically pleasing. I questioned whether the site I was seeing was real or a work of my fantasies. To make myself believe I moved forward.
Tumblr media
Oh my, the Arabic carvings were telling a new tale about the environment. I wondered how precise one might have to be to do such a kind of work. Sadly I wasn't able to find any translation of the texts :(
Tumblr media
(the inside beauty of the mosque)
Half-heartedly I returned to my home still thinking about the glamour of the place I researched about the place. Here are some of my findings. Lodhi Gardens trace their history back to 1444 when the tomb of Mohammed Shah, a Sayyid Dynasty ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, was erected here by his son and the last ruler of the dynasty, Ala-ud-din Alam Shah. Another significant tomb located in the area is that of Sikander Lodi from the Lodi Dynasty, which was built in 1517 by his son Ibrahim Lodi.
Tumblr media
It covers an area of over 90 acres and houses many 15th-century structures that display spectacular architectural beauty. The mausoleum of Mohammed Shah features Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. Designed with eight small domed structures or chattris, each adorned with a lotus finial, ornate pinnacles at the corners, a huge central dome, and an octagonal chamber, the tomb is a sight to behold.
Tumblr media
Here is a small video about my journey exploring the urban oasis of the lodhi garden.
With this, we come to the end of this blog hope you liked it. Would love to here your views and thought about it in the comments
Until next time
With love

Mathematical Exercises and Found Art
Tumblr media
byJF Ptak Science Books
In my science bookstore business one of my principle interests is antique manuscript notebooks in the sciences.  It is a pleasure to see someone working through a problem, or finding what the writer thought to be the most interesting point in a lecture on a particular subject, and to read the occasional doodles and see the timely gloss every now and then.  I’ve had notebooks from an advanced and very careful student for a course given by the great Robert Bunsen that was filled with hundreds of pages of what the master was trying to communicate to his pupils.
There’s also a  series of notebooks from the spectacular period of Cornell physics history (1948-1949), including 6 notebooks of classes with Richard Feynman, including several hundred pages from his 1948/9 course in advanced quantum mechanics, which included (a very early) use of the Feynman diagrams.  The thing that makes these observant, advanced notes taken during Feynman’s classes have more than a pedagogical interest (which is substantial and enough on its own)—they have a capacity to show the logic behind the man’s thinking and how he presented his ideas over a period of some months.  Also, and curiously, notebooks like these seem to have not survived.
Then there’s the notebooks taken by the team of Charlotte and Fritz John when they were pursing doctoral degrees at Goettingen (1929-1933), until forced to leave with the enforcement of the Nazi laws against non-Aryans.  Goettingen happened (and happens) to be the seat of a long, great mathematical heritage, home of Felix Klein, Emmy Noether, David Hilbert and Bernhard Riemann (among many others).  The notebooks—some two linear feet of them—represented four years of advanced interactions with some of the finest mathematical minds in Germany.  I was told by Mrs. John that they were required to take such full notes—but let me tell you, these notebooks were typed transcriptions of the daily handwritten notes, compiled over the course of a class, and then bound.  They are beautiful, and go far beyond my concept of “required”.

KASHI
THE LAND OF DIVINITY
It should come as no surprise that Mark Twain once remarked that Varanasi, also known as Benaras, is twice as old as all of them combined and is older than history, tradition, and even legend. One of the oldest sacred writings in Hinduism, the Rig Veda, refers to Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, as Kashi (Kāśi). The word Kaś, which meaning "to shine," is the root of the term Kashi. Thus, Kashi is sometimes referred to as the "city of light." Maybe the city served as a spiritual mentor and a lighthouse for wandering souls seeking knowledge. In various holy literature, Kashi was also referred to as Avimuktaka (never abandoned by Shiva), Rudravasa (the place where Shiva resides), Anandakanana, Mahasmasana, Surandhana, Brahma Vardha, Sudarsana, and Ramya.

VARANASI
The two Ganga river tributaries that abut the city gave rise to the name Varanasi. The northern Varuna flows, whereas the southern Assi flows close to the Assi Ghat.
Varanasi has most likely been altered or converted into Benaras or Banaras  . Some attribute it to the colonists, who altered the name to fit their regional dialect.
According to legend, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati founded Kashi, which is known as the "original ground."
And the city of light is surrounded by a plethora of other myths, stories, and legends. The holiest pilgrimage in Hinduism, Varanasi is revered by religious texts and is considered the microcosm of the religion. Perhaps for this reason, Hindus aspire to visit Kashi at least once in their lifetime. Regardless of your religious beliefs, Kashi has the power to transform your spiritual state.
The Buddhist Jataka stories and the Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata both frequently mention Varanasi. In the second millennium BCE, Varanasi served as the center of Aryan civilization and was a significant hub for trade and commerce. In the sixth century BCE, Varanasi served as the capital of the kingdom of Kashi. Just ten kilometers from Varanasi, in Sarnath, Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon. Xuanzang, a well-known Chinese traveler who visited Varanasi in 635 BCE, provided evidence of the city's splendor and prosperity.
Varanasi had a decrease in prosperity during the Mughal era, but the Marathas brought it back to life. It continued to be a hub for commerce and religion during British control. The several ghats offer views into the city's turbulent past.
