Letzte Woche habe ich mir einen kleinen Ausflug durch unser kleines Sonnensystem genehmigt (für einen größeren Ausflug habe ich momentan zu wenig Zeit).

Mit dem neuen Raumgleitflitzer EGO3000 war das eine recht komfortable Sache. (Und das Ding ist schnell! Eine Astronomische Einheit (1 AE) legt er in weniger als 10 Sekunden zurück. Dank der neuen AntiGrav-Funktion spürt man so gut wie nichts davon, feine Sache).

Da Sol1 (also unsere Sonne) gerade wieder viel Protuberanzen hatte, entschied ich mich in Richtung Pluto abzubiegen. Der hing jedoch wie üblich etwas trostlos in seiner Umlaufbahn herum, und ich verspürte wenig Lust zu einem Spaziergang auf ihm. Kälte und Nebel kann man ja überall haben...

Mit gedrosselter Geschwindigkeit ging es darum weiter, mein neues Ziel war der Kuiper-Gürtel, von dem man ja noch lange nicht alles weiß, weil unsere Star-Astronomen natürlich lieber irgendeine Supernova untersuchen, als einen Haufen kalter Steine. Somit gilt dieses Gebiet als nahezu unerforscht, ganz ähnlich wie unsere Meere auf der Erde.

Jedenfalls gondelte ich gemütlich am Rand des Kuiper-Gürtels entlang, stellte den Antrieb des Gleiters ab, bremste mich auf Rotationsgeschwindigkeit der "Geröllhalde" (wie ich sie nenne) ab und ließ mich treiben.

Un was, glaubt ihr, bekam ich nach kurzer Zeit zu sehen?

Leider weiß ich es selber nicht, auch eine Schnellabfrage durch den Bordcomputer brachte keine Erkenntnis. Somit kann ich euch nur ein Foto zeigen, welches die Bordkamera selbsttätig aufgenommen hat (wer mehr dazu weiß oder Informationen hat, um was es sich handelt, kontaktiere mich bitte):

Last week I took a little excursion through our small solar system (I don't have enough time for a larger excursion at the moment). With the new space glider EGO3000 it was quite comfortable. (And the thing is fast! It covers an astronomical unit (1 AU) in less than 10 seconds. Thanks to the new AntiGrav function, you hardly feel anything of it, nice thing). Since Sol1 (our sun) just had a lot of prominences again, I decided to turn towards Pluto. However, as usual, it hung around a bit desolately in its orbit, and I felt little desire to walk on it. You can have cold and fog everywhere... So it went on at reduced speed, my new goal was the Kuiper Belt, which we still don't know everything about, because our star astronomers naturally prefer to study any supernova than a heap of cold stones. Thus, this area is considered almost unexplored, much like our oceans on earth. Anyway, I cruised comfortably along the edge of the Kuiper Belt, switched off the glider's drive, slowed down to the rotation speed of the "scree slope" (as I call it) and let myself drift. And what do you think I got to see after a short while? Unfortunately, I don't know myself, even a quick query through the on-board computer didn't bring any knowledge. So I can only show you a photo that the on-board camera took automatically (if you know more about it or have information about what it is, please contact me).

how come I can't write my common app essay but I can go off on a slightly related tangent and write... 543 words on kids learning about the world

I am now posting that because I didn't type it all up to sit in my google docs forever

(The "Looking back" to begin was referencing the college essay - something about watching a bunch of space science shows when I was little. my parents were always like "how do you understand any of that" and it made me think of this)

Looking back, it’s made me realize that kids are capable of understanding a lot more than we give them credit for. They don’t have a basis of comparison to think “oh, that’s complicated,” they simply comprehend it. Try explaining general relativity to an adult, or even to teenagers like my physics class last year, and you’ll be met with confusion. After all, the idea that time, distance, and even direction aren’t constant is hard to accept when the observations and experiences of your whole entire life tell you that they are. “How does that work?!” You’ll wonder. But a kid… sure. “Why not?” They might say. Kids are learning new things about how the world works all the time. When I was 3, I thought the moon belonged in Michigan and that I wouldn’t see it anymore when we moved to Texas but was delighted to spot my old friend in our new state. Not confused, not incredulous, simply ecstatic. The point is, kids are used to unlearning assumptions in favor of reality because they have to do it on the daily. There’s no reason that shouldn’t extend to more complex topics like astrophysics. Big masses bend space-time? *shrug* Okay, why not? This makes light bend? Okay, why not? The Solar System has a lot more than the eight or nine planets and the asteroid belt? Okay, why not? There might be a hidden planet out in the Kuiper belt? Okay, why not? Stars collapse into black holes that nothing ever escapes from? Okay, why not? Blue is actually the hottest color even though we think of it as cold? Okay, why not?

Why? Not? 

A kid hasn’t yet built the instinct to automatically fight that “why not” with answers. “Well, I always knew-” They’re not gonna do that. Yesterday they learned that subtracting is adding with negative numbers and that leap years don’t happen once every 200 years. They have no reason to fight you on something that, in their perspective, has no reason to be more important than that. 

This is making me think of those posts about how all that “protect the children” rhetoric is actually ridiculous. Just straight-up saying you don’t want your kids to know about queer people is one thing, but disguising under the pretense that it’s going to be “too confusing” or an “adult” topic doesn’t hold up. No one’s saying teach a five-year-old how sex works, but acknowledging that two men or two women can fall in love just like mommy and daddy won’t do any harm. Acknowledging that some people don’t like the gender they were born with won’t do any harm. A kid knowing queer people can exist isn’t gonna scar them for life. It’s probably only the twentieth most confusing thing they’ve learned in the past day, let alone week. When you grow up learning that everything has to be exactly one way - that everyone is cisgender and straight and not queer in any way - that’s when you have trouble opening your mind to other possibilities. That’s when you say, “I’ve known this my whole life so it must be true.” But if you’re introduced to these ideas as a kid (to be ab-so-lute-ly clear, in an age-appropriate manner) - Okay, why not?

Black Hole Dance This animation shows a pair of supermassive black holes in the galaxy OJ 287, one of them orbiting the other. The larger of these 2 black holes is one of the largest known to humans, with a mass nearly 20 billion times the size of our sun and a size estimated to be 12 times that of the orbit of Neptune (imagine a black hole that stretches to the Kuiper Belt – that’s how big this is).

The smaller of the 2 black holes is still huge, with a mass of 150 million times that of our sun. This pair of supermassive black holes likely represents the result of 2 galaxies merging, with the smaller one spiraling into the larger one over time. Going back to the early part of the 20th century, astronomers recognized large outbursts of light coming from this galaxy, happening roughly every 20 years. Analyses in this century have suggested that these outbursts are produced by the process animated here: an active accretion disk is found around the larger of the two black holes, and every few years the smaller black hole plows through that disk, releasing the same amount of energy as a trillion stars in the process. These two black holes passing close to each other are thought to release some of their energy via gravitational waves, and a calculation using previous bursts and an estimate of the amount of energy lost as those waves was able to predict the exact date of an outburst in 2019. Based on the orbits required for that simulation, it is thought that these 2 black holes will fully merge in about 10,000 years. Explanation: The night side of Pluto spans this shadowy scene, a stunning spacebased view with the Sun 4.9 billion kilometers (almost 4.5 light-hours) behind the dim and distant world. It was captured by far flung New Horizons in July of 2015. The spacecraft was at a range of some 21,000 kilometers from Pluto, about 19 minutes after its closest approach. A denizen of the Kuiper Belt in dramatic silhouette, the image also reveals Pluto's tenuous, surprisingly complex layers of hazy atmosphere. The crescent twilight landscape near the top of the frame includes southern areas of nitrogen ice plains now formally known as Sputnik Planitia and rugged mountains of water-ice in the Norgay Montes.

Fic idea:

The Dutch government hires the newly reformed Overwatch to capture and return Dr. de Kuiper, a mentally ill man that Talon has kidnapped from one of their facilities.

(Just the mention that Talon has this poor man sends Overwatch into a tizzy. They will rescue him no matter the cost!)

And the first few attempts at getting him don’t go super well, but Overwatch is learning patterns about how he is transported, his (ab)normal schedule, who is guarding him, etc.

Genji and McCree notice that the other members of the Takon strike team are backing off more and more each attempt, almost like they want him to be captured? Maybe it’s a trap?

Eventually, Overwatch does get Dr. de Kuiper ( who strangely has a bag of clothes and a thumb drive of his medical records with him nearby).

So while Mercy is doing a checkup on poor Sigma, Talon calls Overwatch in a half hearted attempt to do the usual “you have one of our best men, we’re gonna get him back, blah blah blah” and it’s obvious that Reaper doesn’t really want him back.

That is, until Winston mentions that they’re gonna give Dr de Kuiper back to the Dutch government...

Then all hell breaks out on the call, with Sombra and Reaper screaming at them in Spanish, Moira screeching that Overwatch are absolute MOnSters and even Widowmaker looks mildly miffed at the notion.

(Akande looks very confused by his comrades reaction- why didn’t they freak out this bad when Overwatch first nabbed him?)

Eventually, after Overwatch starts figuring stuff out, it comes to light that The strike team of Talon (minus Akande) wanted Sigma to be captured by Overwatch because they thought he would be safe with them. But they don’t want him to go back into the hands of the Dutch government that isolated him and made his illness worse.

And with that news, Overwatch rethinks giving him back to the Dutch government too...

So now Overwatch has a very sweet but very confused gravity grandpa while fending off both Talon frantically trying to get him back and the Dutch government saying “Hey, have you got him back yet? He’s very dangerous you know!”

I dunno, I’d read it...

Mark Seibert concert MUSICAL MELODIES , 20.5.2018 17 Uhr – A VERY PERSONAL REVIEW

A couple of days ago I went to Mark Seibert’s concert in Hamburg. You may have guessed that I like Mark Seibert a lot, actually he is my favorit musical actor. I know this is a Tanz der Vampire Blog, but Mark Seibert is part of the TdV family and he sang two songs from Tanz der Vampire, so I guess putting it here is fine. And also writing a review helps keeping my memory vivid...

The concert was utterly amazing and time flew by like nothing. Mark invited two special guests: Oedo Kuipers and Marle Mertens, who both worked with him in some productions.

Usually I write in English, but since I can express myself better in German, I will write my experience in German. So I am sorry dear English followers (maybe I do a short recap in English later if you ask for it)

 GERMAN PART:

Alles auf der Bühne war ohne Requisiten, ein sehr intimes Konzert. Als Begleitung ein Cello und ein Klavier, die einzigen Veränderungen waren durch das Licht. Mark wollte gern eine Konzertreihe, wo er viele Balladen singen konnte. Und an Hand der Songliste sieht man, dass genau das gelungen ist.

Go the distance ist ein so schönes Lied und Mark singt es so gefühlvoll, dass ich vom ersten Song an Gänsehaut hatte. Das hat sich auch mit Your song schon gesteigert, sodass ich aus dem Träumen schon gar nicht mehr raus kam.

Nach den Eröffnungssongs erzählte Mark, dass er Angst vor einem Konzert in Hamburg hatte und es deshalb so lange gedauert hat bis er ein Konzert in Hamburg gegeben hat. Generell wird vielen von einem Konzert in Hamburg abgeraten, weil es angeblich das Publikum nicht anzieht. Kann man bei Mark nicht sagen, denn das Konzert bei dem ich war, war das Zusatzkonzert. Denn das erste Konzert ein Tag davor, war so schnell ausverkauft, dass ein zweites angesetzt wurde. Ich würde also sagen, dass Mark das ganze „in Hamburg kann man kein Konzert geben“ widerlegt hat. J (Hoffentlich heißt das, dass noch viele Konzerte in Hamburg folgen, denn da komm ich problemlos hin.)

Als nächstes Stück spielt Mark Die Päpstin in Fulda, deshalb hat er auch Ein Traum ohne Anfang und Ende gesungen. Das perfekte Lied für ihn, das ihm übrigens die Rolle einbrachte. Danach stellte er seinen ersten Special Gast vor: Marle Mertens! Ich muss sagen, dass ich Marle noch nie in einer Rolle gesehen habe, ich kannte zwar ihren Namen, mehr aber auch nicht. Aber sie hat mich unglaublich begeistert. Was für eine schöne klare Stimme. Sie hat dann auch gleich mit Mark Wehrlos aus die Päpstin gesungen. Mark und Marle harmonieren super und man weiß, warum Mark sie eingeladen hat. Hat Marle bei Wehrlos doch eine verletzliche Seite zeigen können, hat sie mit Irgendwo wird immer getanzt ihre ganze Stimmpower rausgehauen und ab diesem Moment war ich ein großer Fan von ihr. (Etwas schade nur, dass Mark nichts aus Mozart gesungen hat oder Oedo Kuipers)

Mit Schikaneder kann ich bisher nicht so viel anfangen, einfach von der Geschichte her, aber auch die Musik blieb mit jetzt nicht so hängen, wobei es sehr schöne Lieder gibt (z.B. Der letzte Vorhang). Aus Schikaneder gab es ein Duett zwischen Mark und Marle Träum groß mit wahrscheinlich der meisten Choreografie des Abends.

Danach kam Oedo Kuipers als zweiter Special Gast. (Ich weiß zum ersten Mal wie man seinen Namen ausspricht!) Er hat gemeinsam mit Mark Broken Wings gesungen, was auch auf seinem Album drauf ist. Mark hat dazu auf der Cajon den Rhythmus gemacht. (Mark hat mehrmals Werbung für Oedo’s Album gemacht.) Danach hat Oedo sein Solosong gesungen und zwar(, wenn ich den Titel richtig habe, denn es gab keine Songliste oder so) Corner of the sky aus Pippin. Oedo singt sehr „verträumt“ und ohne viele „Schnörkel“. Diese Einfachheit gefällt mir gut. Und es passte auch gut zum Abend und zu den Liedern.

Und danach kam das Finale für den ersten Teil und natürlich durfte Tanz der Vampire nicht fehlen. Zuerst gab es Totale Finsternis mit Marle und danach Die Unstillbare Gier. Ich habe Mark selbst als Graf auf der Bühne in TdV gesehen und ich muss zugeben, dass mir sein Graf nicht am besten gefällt. Denn ich finde, man merkt dass die Lage eigentlich zu tief für ihn ist. Nicht, dass er es nicht trotzdem singen kann, aber ich merke, dass er schon viel Technik anwenden muss, um die tiefen Töne gut zu bekommen. Das ist sicher eine Herausforderung für Mark und das verdient höchsten Respekt. Trotzdem muss ich sagen, dass ich von der Interpretation noch nie eine herzergreifendere Unstillbare Gier gehört habe. So leidend und punktgenau auf den Text. Deshalb ein würdiger Abschluss für den ersten Teil. Ich weiß auch nicht, was für ein Lied danach kommen sollte. Die Leute im Saal gaben stehende Ovationen.

Teil 2 begann ruhig mit You’ll be in my heart, einer meiner Lieblingslieder überhaupt. Danach folgte Hallelujah von Leonard Cohen und auch wenn Mark behauptet hat, er kenne niemandem dem der Song nicht gefällt, muss ich sagen, dass ich das Lied mittlerweile nicht mehr hören kann und auch nicht mag. Trotzdem hat Mark es natürlich toll gesungen.

Ein Highlight des Abends war Daniel Franks Soloklavierstück. Er hat in ca. 10 Minuten um die 30 Melodien gespielt. Mark meinte er wollte auch mal dem tollen Klavierspieler die Chance geben etwas allein zu spielen als immer nur als Korrepetitor. Ich habe viele der Melodien erkannt und das Publikum ging ordentlich mit.

Mark erzählte danach vom unrühmlichen Musical Barbarella, dass er lieber vergessen würde und als er hörte, dass er noch ein Musical schreiben würde, dachte er nur: Wie kann man den nochmal ein Musical schreiben lassen? Aber er muss sagen, da hat er tolle Musik geschrieben. Nämlich Ghost und daraus hat Mark mit Marle als Duett With You mit einem etwas anderer Text gesungen, da es ja eigentlich ein Frauensolo ist. Ich mag das Lied sehr und das war wirklich wunderschön.

Das Musical Elisabeth durfte natürlich nicht fehlen, deshalb gab es Wenn ich tanzen will mit Marle als Duet und dann durfte Marle noch Ich gehör nur mir singen. Tolles Lied, tolle Interpretation, super gesungen. Nur wenn man Pia Douwes schon mehrmals dieses Lied live hat singen hören, dann kommt leider keiner für mich an diese legendäre Interpretation heran, aber das soll Marles Leistung in keiner Weise schmälern.

Oedo konnte mit Lady in Red die 80er nochmal aufleben lassen. Mark sorgte mit einer kleinen Anekdote zu Chris de Burgh für den Lacher des Abends. Chris de Burgh wird im nächsten oder darauf das Jahr Musik für ein Musical in Fulda schreiben. Und er war bei dem Press Call für Die Päpstin auch da, wo Mark Seibert war. Chris de Burgh hat ja ein riesen Anwesen in England und das ist eben eine Burg. Da hat Mark einen Witz gemacht: „Naja er heißt ja auch Chris de BURG!“ Chris de Burgh und andere kamen und fragten worüber sie lachten und Mark hat versucht das deutsche Wortspiel zu erklären, was dann natürlich gar nicht mehr lustig ist auf Englisch. Chris de Burgh war wohl wenig begeistert. Mark meinte er hat sich voll zum Deppen gemacht. Als letztes sagte er noch: „Egal was ich bald mache, ich weiß schon mal wo ich auf keinen Fall spielen werde“ im Musical von Chris de Burgh. Ich hab mich weggeschmissen vor Lachen.

Bring him home ist einer meiner absoluten Lieblingslieder überhaupt und deshalb habe ich mich so gefreut als Mark das gesungen hat. Tränen hatte ich oft in den Augen (ich bin nah nah Wasser gebaut), aber da hab ich geheult wie ein Schlosshund.

Als Finale gab es Falling Slowly als Trio mit Marle und Oedo. Tolles Arrangement.

Stehende Ovationen für alle Beteiligten.

Wie das so ist, wollen aber die Fans noch kein Finale und deshalb gab es noch zwei Zugaben. Zuerst Die Schatten werden länger mit Oedo. Da waren alle am Jubeln und danach als Rausschmeißer mit Ruhe Der letzte Vorhang aus Schikaneder. Das letzte leise Solo von Mark. Und damit war es leider zu Ende.

Ein tolles Konzert, ein Abend voll leiser Töne und viel Gefühl. Ich würde jederzeit wieder zu einem Konzert von Mark gehen! 

(Danach gab es noch ein Meet und Greet mit Mark für die Leute mit VIP Karten. Ich hatte keine, aber das ist nicht schlimm, denn ich hab Mark schon mehrmals von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen und auch ein Autogramm von Mark auf seiner CD.)

Bei Inzidenz von über 2000 Niederlande lockern Corona-Maßnahmen 25.01.2022, 20:20 Uhr Der niederländische Ministerpräsident Rutte spricht von einem "bewussten Risiko", das das Land eingehe. Bei steil steigenden Infektionszahlen gelten ab morgen Lockerungen. Gastronomie und Kultur dürfen nach fünfwöchiger Schließung wieder öffnen. Trotz einer massiven Omikron-Welle lockern die Niederlande die Corona-Maßnahmen. Gaststätten, Theater, Museen und Kinos dürfen nach mehr als fünf Wochen ab Mittwoch wieder öffnen - täglich bis 22 Uhr, teilte der niederländische Ministerpräsident Mark Rutte mit. Damit macht das Land einen deutlichen Schritt zurück zur Normalität. Auch bei Sportwettkämpfen wie etwa Fußballspielen darf wieder eine begrenzte Zahl von Besuchern zugelassen werden. Noch immer bleiben Einschränkungen des öffentlichen Lebens wie Maskenpflicht und der Corona-Pass, mit dem Besucher nachweisen müssen, dass sie getestet, geimpft oder genesen sind. Auch die Quarantäneregeln werden gelockert. "Wir gehen heute bewusst ein Risiko ein", sagte Rutte mit dem Hinweis auf die täglich neuen Höchstwerte bei den Neuinfektionen. Die Omikron-Variante des Corona-Virus verbreite sich zwar viel schneller, Menschen erkrankten aber nicht so schwer. Gesundheitsminister Ernst Kuipers warnte: "Omikron ist keine kleine Grippe." Die Gefahr einer Überlastung des Gesundheitssystems sei nach wie vor groß. Vor knapp zehn Tagen endete der harte Lockdown vom 18. Dezember, Geschäfte und Schulen wurden wieder geöffnet. Der Druck auf die Regierung, auch noch die letzten harten Einschränkungen aufzuheben, war groß. Auch Bürgermeister wiesen darauf hin, dass in den Nachbarländern Deutschland und Belgien alles offen sei und Verbote auch daher nicht länger durchzusetzen seien. Die Zahl der Neuinfektionen steigt inzwischen rasant. In den vergangenen sieben Tagen waren mehr als 366.000 neue Infektionen registriert worden, gut 50 Prozent mehr als in der Vorwoche. Die Inzidenz liegt bei mehr als 2000 Neuinfektionen pro 100.000 Einwohner in sieben Tagen. Zum Vergleich: In Deutschland lag der entsprechende Wert am Dienstag bei 894,3.
