The Grail is kept in the castle of the Fisher King, last of his line. The king has been wounded in the “thigh,” implying that he has been wounded in the groin and thus cannot father a successor. The king is a stand in for spiritual authority which has been compromised by excess. He awaits an untarnished hero to achieve the Grail, ask the right question, and bring healing to king and kingdom.
