this went crazy
#just watched the last little bit of tgm again bc my sister was watching it and man#I love competency in film. the action sequences are SO COOL TO WATCH#and the ending is of course one of my favorite endings of a movie ever tbh#like. goose died because he ejected too soon(?) and hit the canopy. his kid almost died because he COULDN'T eject#but rooster survives. rooster and mav both make it. and yeah saving mav is what goose would have done#but it works vice versa too. of course he would do anything possible to keep his best friend's child safe. of course#shaking sobbing throwing upppppo#Lu rambles#tgm#Spotify

god Andor is so good when it’s boring. why can’t it be boring all the time
#Andor SPOILERS for ts#I’m not here to see Bix get assaulted. I AM here to see Dedra and Eedy wage psychological war over fondue#please. one setpiece action sequence per season.#spend the rest of the series on Chandrila worldbuilding I beg you#the entire farm planet arc was just. the opening of Rebel Moon beat for beat#Star Wars rips off thing that ripped off Star Wars; film at eleven#and the ouroboros eats its tail forever#also like. Cassian was barely in that episode. Boba Fett levels of being present in the show named after him#but my god. looking over his shoulder at Bix in the final callback to his own exiles in season one?#but the light wasn’t in her eyes it was fading 😭

just watched the borderlands movie and the only good part was that krieg’s little harness thingo lowkey looked like a very skimpy little bra thing sometimes

he needs some back support with those jugs ofc
#it wasn’t AS bad as I thought it would be#but it was not good#at all#idk why they changed so much of the story and just like Made It Worse#why did they make Tina’s dad head of atlas? why not just keep her parents killed off? why did they mischaracterise her so badly?#why was she annoying? why was she an experiment? why not use a more compelling villain than Guy Who Looks And Acts As Bland As Possible#the villain was simply. no good#I wish they used jack 😔#I also wish they didn’t do the Lilith’s mum subplot bc it was a little off??? somehow?#and Tannis and Lilith’s relationship wasn’t particularly fulfilling#claptrap was even more annoying#the jokes weren’t funny#the sfx were NOT as bad as everyone said they were I’m sorry I thought they were fine aside from a few weird shots in some chase sequences#another thing I don’t get that much was ppl hating Lilith’s hair bc it’s doesn’t look like in the games#ppl compared the wig to wigs that cosplayers use that look rly accurate and good but#u have to take into account#that it’s rly hard to stylise a live action movie to look something like boarderlands and most cosplays are made to look good statically#things that look good in cosplay and in the game will not look good in a live action action sequences#like if u gave her a cosplay wig it would look great and accurate but it also would be completely rigged in the wind and would not move#like real hair#which would probably be incredibly jarring to see in a live action film especially with all the action#was the hair great? no. I still think it could’ve been vastly improved on while remaining realistic for a live action movie#but I think some people hold it to unrealistic standards in their criticisms or whatever#also costumes have to be actually movable and breathable bc REAL people are shooting REAL scenes and doing stunts and shit in them#but. yeah. the costumes could definitely have had some improvement#I think that if u wanted to make a borderlands film that was accurate to the design of the characters it would be easier to do it animated#and the writing?#we do not speak about the writing good lord#borderlands movie#borderlands

i love what francis lawrence did w the hunger games movies after taking over as director but god i am sooooo curious what the rest of the films would look like if the first director (gary ross) stuck with the franchise
#like. idk something about that first film. sticks with me so much#the amount of Silence.#the shakey cameras. the grainy film#the drab colors#it emulates the horror of the scenario so perfectly#ESPECIALLY the bloodbath/start of the games#the silence+ tiny bit of feedback/ear ringing sounds#there is no music. there is no fanfare or epic action sequence#it is scary and chaotic and terrible because its kids killing each other#its so perfectly done#the hunger games

didn't expect to be thinking about this today but shrek (2001)? holds up. you can see how it was considered really fresh and new at the time because it was parodying all the usual disney tropes (made with spite by people who had just left the company) but it's also a genuinely well-done parody/subversion of typical fairy tale tropes and it's got just enough sincere heart to it that it works very well on its own. how often do you see a "beauty and the beast" type of story that ends with both people remaining "beasts" as their happy ending? they did a good job combining the gross crude humor and the parodic elements with a real love story and i'm still charmed by it. i do think it deserved the first ever best animated feature academy award. the cgi's a little dated-looking but not even to a distracting extent. there's "adult" jokes that don't feel forced or detract from its appeal to kids. and it ends with a dragon breaking into a church and disrupting a traditional heterosexual wedding by eating the fascist tyrant groom so the princess can marry her true love in a swamp. what more could you ask for
#shrek#i will most likely not be seeing shrek 5 because i don't care that much about the shrek franchise#i'm just watching nostalgic animated films tonight#if this was made today people would be calling fiona a “girlboss” in a negative way :/#probably because of the scene where she fights off robin hood and his men in a totally random seeming action sequence#complete with very of-its-time matrix reference that would have completely gone over kid me's head#but...idk it's part of the parodic element of the movie and it parallels the scene where shrek fights off all the knights at the tournament#and the film does a good job of showing her as already being independent and resourceful and just as willing to be gross and dirty#i think she's a surprisingly well-drawn character actually! she fits in with disney's more independent and rounded renaissance heroines#anyway i hope shrek 5 makes fun of disney's current aversion to anything original and attempted ownership of everything

im literally in love with the little cackle that harley does every so often in birds of prey… like it’s the cutest most unhinged laugh and it’s adorable
#harley quinn#I feel like Margot didn’t get a chance to do it much in SS and TSS because I don’t remember it from those#only in BoP#and it’s SO cute I’m like… that’s my absolutely unhinged girl#BoP Harley is my fave live action harley overall and the laugh really helps. it’s so HARLEY.#I think it’s because she gets to have a lot of fun in BoP like yeah it’s life and death but#it’s on a smaller scale than destruction of an entire country so harley gets to play and be silly and have fun#she doesn’t take any fight in BoP nearly as seriously as the final fight in TSS#which is not a criticism of either film it makes so much sense for both#the only fight she takes serious in BoP I think is the final sequence with Roman because that’s the only one she feels she could lose#I think she sort of has fun in the last part of the escape sequence in TSS#when she’s escaped to her own world in her mind#but the first parts of her escape I really feel like she switches into the brainspace for being an effective killer#there’s two parts in her brain for that#the one that fights for fun and is entertained by the violence and playing with people#and the one that goes into immediate killer mode without thinking about it#she’s very good at compartmentalising#sorry this went from me talking about Harley’s adorable laugh to analysing her mental state I didn’t mean for that to happen#anyway congrats margot robbie on being really cute or w/e

i liked enola holmes 2 🤭
#i watched it in one sitting compared to the first movie took me four sittings#this one just felt more concise and the pacing was better#it wasn’t the best i’ve seen but i’m compared it to the first film since i finished it earlier today#i still scoffed at some of the timing of things like the love confession and the kiss happening before rly high action sequences#the ending was so much better than the ending of the first movie like the first movie just pissed me off how it ended with a “’in conclusion#monologue like hello didn’t we learn how to write conclusions without saying in conclusion outright

Movie Review: Skin Trade (2014)
As a law school student, Sundays have become a day to unwind and escape the relentless grind of legal studies. It’s a time I eagerly anticipate a cinematic journey that whisks me away from the craziness of case law and into the captivating realms of action, thriller, and suspense films. Occasionally, I indulge in a good dose of comedy to lighten the mood. However, with October’s arrival, I’m set…

Say what you will about Van Helsing 2004; hate it, love it, be indifferent, But the All-Hallow's masquerade ball went sooooo hard and it had zero right to do so! It's a fun, campy, monster mash movie with wonderfully dated ( and expensive) cgi and non-stop action meant to be a popcorn flick one takes out to watch around spooky season. And it has this* chef's kiss* GORGEOUS 6 minute sequence plopped arbitrarily in the second act, which unexpectedly surpasses nearly every other ball in the last 30+ years of film( notable exception being the Cinderella 2015 ball) for literally no reason other than to be dramatic af.
Like feast your eyes on this Gothic masterpiece!!! Who doesn't want to immediately live in this picture?!??

They used those candles with oil in them so that they would have real candles, real string orchestra( I believe), probably around 100 real life extras( something which is tragically absent in modern film), said extras are all in beautiful fully decked-out costumes( which are in luxuriously dark colours, but nearly no fully black, another thing you cannot say for much modern cinema), REAL CIRQUE DU SOLEIL PERFORMERS for all the acrobatics!!!! Hell, instead of filming in a sound stage, where they could control the reverb and the acoustics and the size of the set and the bloody lighting ( they apparently had a heck of a time emulating the firelight for this sequence) and the temperature( it's very cold in stone churches!) better, they filmed in a Baroque church in Prague! As I said, peak dramatic splendour, jfc...
Think about that a second...They filmed a vampire masquerade in a Baroque Catholic Church( St. Nicholas' in Lesser Town, if you were curious) with amazing over-the-top acoustics and marble statues and real, tiled floors and marble pillars and a choir loft which they very much utilized, covered the pipe organ and the altar with a grand brocade curtain so it wouldn't be so obviously a, you know, a church! And there's a gold gilt elevated and canopied pulpit into which they put two vampire kiddies for, again, the sake of being dramatic.
And the costumes! They remind me of the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera Masquerade costumes. Same quality, like they're old, well-cared-for costumes pulled out of a warehouse, instead of fast industry churn-outs. With lots of trim and colour and masks and lace and feathers and..just...ugh.. they are all perfect! Just look at all the head pieces on the ladies and the hats on all the gentleman ( save Dracula of course) and the powdered wigs on the musicians. ANNNNDD! The dresses are historically correct!!!!!! It's the 80's bustle era! Nobody does the 80's bustle era in film anymore and it's a bummer. Oh and one other thing! Anna's ( and other women's) hair, at least here in the ball, is also historically accurate because it's all pinned up! None of those fucken modern beachwaves at a ball! Everybody's got updo's!
Gah, I swear, Dracula in his gold cloak really does things to me in this scene!
By the way, the acrobatics are bonkers in here for just background stuff!! Especially the random guys on unicycles and the dude playing the violin whilst standing on a ball...Like....WHAT?
Anyways, all this to say, that this masquerade ball feels sooo real and tangible and because of that it blows every other film out of the water, and no, I will not change my mind!!!!!
Here's a few more gifs, bcuz, why the hell not, this scene is sexy as fuu*ck?
Alright I need to go to bed now.
