Why reblog machine-generated art?

When I was ten years old I took a photography class where we developed black and white photos by projecting light on papers bathed in chemicals. If we wanted to change something in the image, we had to go through a gradual, arduous process called dodging and burning.

When I was fifteen years old I used photoshop for the first time, and I remember clicking on the clone tool or the blur tool and feeling like I was cheating.

When I was twenty eight I got my first smartphone. The phone could edit photos. A few taps with my thumb were enough to apply filters and change contrast and even spot correct. I was holding in my hand something more powerful than the huge light machines I'd first used to edit images.

When I was thirty six, just a few weeks ago, I took a photo class that used Lightroom Classic and again, it felt like cheating. It made me really understand how much the color profiles of popular web images I'd been seeing for years had been pumped and tweaked and layered with local edits to make something that, to my eyes, didn't much resemble photography. To me, photography is light on paper. It's what you capture in the lens. It's not automatic skin smoothing and a local filter to boost the sky. This reminded me a lot more of the photomanipulations my friend used to make on deviantart; layered things with unnatural colors that put wings on buildings or turned an eye into a swimming pool. It didn't remake the images to that extent, obviously, but it tipped into the uncanny valley. More real than real, more saturated more sharp and more present than the actual world my lens saw. And that was before I found the AI assisted filters and the tool that would identify the whole sky for you, picking pieces of it out from between leaves.

You know, it's funny, when people talk about artists who might lose their jobs to AI they don't talk about the people who have already had to move on from their photo editing work because of technology. You used to be able to get paid for basic photo manipulation, you know? If you were quick with a lasso or skilled with masks you could get a pretty decent chunk of change by pulling subjects out of backgrounds for family holiday cards or isolating the pies on the menu for a mom and pop. Not a lot, but enough to help. But, of course, you can just do that on your phone now. There's no need to pay a human for it, even if they might do a better job or be more considerate toward the aesthetic of an image.

And they certainly don't talk about all the development labs that went away, or the way that you could have trained to be a studio photographer if you wanted to take good photos of your family to hang on the walls and that digital photography allowed in a parade of amateurs who can make dozens of iterations of the same bad photo until they hit on a good one by sheer volume and luck; if you want to be a good photographer everyone can do that why didn't you train for it and spend a long time taking photos on film and being okay with bad photography don't you know that digital photography drove thousands of people out of their jobs.

My dad told me that he plays with AI the other day. He hosts a movie podcast and he puts up thumbnails for the downloads. In the past, he'd just take a screengrab from the film. Now he tells the Bing AI to make him little vignettes. A cowboy running away from a rhino, a dragon arm-wrestling a teddy bear. That kind of thing. Usually based on a joke that was made on the show, or about the subject of the film and an interest of the guest.

People talk about "well AI art doesn't allow people to create things, people were already able to create things, if they wanted to create things they should learn to create things." Not everyone wants to make good art that's creative. Even fewer people want to put the effort into making bad art for something that they aren't passionate about. Some people want filler to go on the cover of their youtube video. My dad isn't going to learn to draw, and as the person who he used to ask to photoshop him as Ant-Man because he certainly couldn't pay anyone for that kind of thing, I think this is a great use case for AI art. This senior citizen isn't going to start cartooning and at two recordings a week with a one-day editing turnaround he doesn't even really have the time for something like a Fiverr commission. This is a great use of AI art, actually.

I also know an artist who is going Hog Fucking Wild creating AI art of their blorbos. They're genuinely an incredibly talented artist who happens to want to see their niche interest represented visually without having to draw it all themself. They're posting the funny and good results to a small circle of mutuals on socials with clear information about the source of the images; they aren't trying to sell any of the images, they're basically using them as inserts for custom memes. Who is harmed by this person saying "i would like to see my blorbo lasciviously eating an ice cream cone in the is this a pigeon meme"?

The way I use machine-generated art, as an artist, is to proof things. Can I get an explosion to look like this. What would a wall of dead computer monitors look like. Would a ballerina leaping over the grand canyon look cool? Sometimes I use AI art to generate copyright free objects that I can snip for a collage. A lot of the time I use it to generate ideas. I start naming random things and seeing what it shows me and I start getting inspired. I can ask CrAIon for pose reference, I can ask it to show me the interior of spaces from a specific angle.

I profoundly dislike the antipathy that tumblr has for AI art. I understand if people don't want their art used in training pools. I understand if people don't want AI trained on their art to mimic their style. You should absolutely use those tools that poison datasets if you don't want your art included in AI training. I think that's an incredibly appropriate action to take as an artist who doesn't want AI learning from your work.

However I'm pretty fucking aggressively opposed to copyright and most of the "solid" arguments against AI art come down to "the AIs viewed and learned from people's copyrighted artwork and therefore AI is theft rather than fair use" and that's a losing argument for me. In. Like. A lot of ways. Primarily because it is saying that not only is copying someone's art theft, it is saying that looking at and learning from someone's art can be defined as theft rather than fair use.

Also because it's just patently untrue.

But that doesn't really answer your question. Why reblog machine-generated art? Because I liked that piece of art.

It was made by a machine that had looked at billions of images - some copyrighted, some not, some new, some old, some interesting, many boring - and guided by a human and I liked it. It was pretty. It communicated something to me. I looked at an image a machine made - an artificial picture, a total construct, something with no intrinsic meaning - and I felt a sense of quiet and loss and nostalgia. I looked at a collection of automatically arranged pixels and tasted salt and smelled the humidity in the air.

I liked it.

I don't think that all AI art is ugly. I don't think that AI art is all soulless (i actually think that 'having soul' is a bizarre descriptor for art and that lacking soul is an equally bizarre criticism). I don't think that AI art is bad for artists. I think the problem that people have with AI art is capitalism and I don't think that's a problem that can really be laid at the feet of people curating an aesthetic AI art blog on tumblr.

Machine learning isn't the fucking problem the problem is massive corporations have been trying hard not to pay artists for as long as massive corporations have existed (isn't that a b-plot in the shape of water? the neighbor who draws ads gets pushed out of his job by product photography? did you know that as recently as ten years ago NewEgg had in-house photographers who would take pictures of the products so users wouldn't have to rely on the manufacturer photos? I want you to guess what killed that job and I'll give you a hint: it wasn't AI)

Am I putting a human out of a job because I reblogged an AI-generated "photo" of curtains waving in the pale green waters of an imaginary beach? Who would have taken this photo of a place that doesn't exist? Who would have painted this hypersurrealistic image? What meaning would it have had if they had painted it or would it have just been for the aesthetic? Would someone have paid for it or would it be like so many of the things that artists on this site have spent dozens of hours on only to get no attention or value for their work?

My worst ratio of hours to notes is an 8-page hand-drawn detailed ink comic about getting assaulted at a concert and the complicated feelings that evoked that took me weeks of daily drawing after work with something like 54 notes after 8 years; should I be offended if something generated from a prompt has more notes than me? What does that actually get the blogger? Clout? I believe someone said that popularity on tumblr gets you one thing and that is yelled at.

What do you get out of this? Are you helping artists right now? You're helping me, and I'm an artist. I've wanted to unload this opinion for a while because I'm sick of the argument that all Real Artists think AI is bullshit. I'm a Real Artist. I've been paid for Real Art. I've been commissioned as an artist.

And I find a hell of a lot of AI art a lot more interesting than I find human-generated corporate art or Thomas Kincaid (but then, I repeat myself).

There are plenty of people who don't like AI art and don't want to interact with it. I am not one of those people. I thought the gay sex cats were funny and looked good and that shitposting is the ideal use of a machine image generation: to make uncopyrightable images to laugh at.

I think that tumblr has decided to take a principled stand against something that most people making the argument don't understand. I think tumblr's loathing for AI has, generally speaking, thrown weight behind a bunch of ideas that I think are going to be incredibly harmful *to artists specifically* in the long run.

Anyway. If you hate AI art and you don't want to interact with people who interact with it, block me.

When Kazuha first got a letter from KBS during a meeting with the Lesserafim team, she didn’t expect much to come from it. She expected the mail to be for some other member who had a stronger Korean fanbase. So when their manager read the paper, you could likely imagine the shock she felt. 

When the entire group sat in one of Hybe’s meeting rooms, everyone sat down and lay back in their chairs. “Apparently, Music Bank is looking for a temporary MC since Minju and Sangmin have overseas schedules next week.”

At first, the four older girls turned to Eunchae, knowing that she would love to go back. The maknae’s face lit up, but turned into a frown when their manager shook their head. “They want someone new. It helps them scout for new possible MC combinations in the future.”

“Did they ask who they wanted this time?” Chaewon asked, hoping that if they picked her, she would work with a friend.

“Kazuha-ssi.”

Zuha sat up, surprised, pointing at herself wide-eyed while she looked at her members. Sure, she had improved in her Korean skills, and she found herself funny, but after her first time being MC about a year ago, she believed that it would take longer for another opportunity.

This got Kazuha to where she was right now, sitting in the waiting room as a makeup artist applying some eyeshadow with a brush that feathered on top of her eyelid. She felt her hands clamming up, the sweat making them slightly slippery as she patted them down on her pants.

The Japanese woman wasn’t sure who her partner was, but she was about to find out while the stylist was doing her hair. When the makeup artist had finished, Zuha had been able to open her eyes, feeling the short and soft tugs on her hair as she felt the heat of the flat iron.

Her eyes roamed around the table, trying to find the script that lay on the other end of the table. “Can someone please pass over the cards?” She asked politely as her manager does just that. “You’ll be up in twenty, so put on your dress soon,” Kazuha listened to her, nodding, as she read over the script, when her heart sank at the sight of the name.

Kazuha mentally rolled her eyes since she couldn’t move in her seat, but she was thinking how she was the unluckiest person in the world. Yet before she could think deeper about it, the stylist had already dragged her to the rack of dresses, where they opted for a white, off-the-shoulder dress.

The stylist had said that her beauty looked much more pure and angelic this way. Kazuha then put on the simple heels, a bit confused as to why she had to wear a tall pair instead of something comfortable. 

But once she entered the set where interviews take place, it answered her question. Kazuha had forgotten that you were a bit shorter than she was, causing you to wear heeled shoes around her often.

She takes in your presence, eyes skimming you up and down. You wore an off-the-shoulder dress as well, but in the color black. The length was similar to the one she wore, but your dress flowed outward a bit more, and had mesh sleeves that covered your arms.

It looked like a white and black swan on stage together, especially with Kazuha’s hair being wavy while yours was styled pin straight. Where she saw a glow that surrounded you under the bright-white studio lights, while a makeup artist of your own touched up the subtle blush on the apples of your face.

The use of dark eyeshadow around your eyes emphasized the intimidating stare you were known for.  You had this grungy look that many fans went crazy for, and Kazuha despised how attractive you looked in her eyes.

She couldn’t have imagined that this was going to be the first interaction you’d have ever since that night Zuha had ended everything. 

It was a week after the second weekend of Coachella 2024, and Lesserafim had been going through much emotional distress. You remember the day so vividly, sitting in the dorm with the three members, wanting to be some solace for her.

Your girlfriend, at the time, had been pacing in her room as you sat on her bed with worry written all over your face. It wasn’t clear if seeing her at this moment was a good idea—your fandoms were pretty much at war this whole time, and it broke your heart to see her this way.

The usually calm, collected ballerina looked overwhelmed. Dark circles under her eyes, red scleras from all the crying, and her usually-perfect hair disheveled, she just looked like a wreck.

“I mean, it was disappointing, but it always feels like we did something criminal,” she says, exasperated with her hands clasped together behind her head. Trying to reason with her, you caress her shoulder, “It comes with the job, baby.”

“It’s always your fans, though!” She said with frustration, pointing an accusing finger at you.

Now your face went from concerned to a bit irritated, “That isn’t really something I can control, Zuha.” Kazuha looked confused, likely thinking of so many things, yet you couldn’t possibly believe that she was putting some of the blame on you.

“You think this is all easy for me, too?” She heard how baffled you sounded, and couldn’t even look you straight in the eyes.

“That’s not what I meant-”

“But that’s what you're insinuating.”

She realizes the mistake she made, but Zuha does not want to admit her wrongdoings. Which was pretty rare for her—she wasn’t one to be petty unless it came to you.

The interaction left Kazuha with a bad taste in her mouth, which had her breaking up with you through text. All the while, you were always the type of person who easily detached from scenarios like that. So while Kazuha had this lingering hatred for you, you just lived your life as usual.

Even if you were that way, no one could say you didn’t try to make it work. Both her members answered the door when you visited after the breakup, where you evidently looked depressed. For a week straight, you did your best to make it work, showing that you weren’t going to give up on her.

But it got to a point where you validated your feelings more and knew your worth, so you left her alone, rather than looking like you were trying to harass her.

“Are you ready?” The cameraman asked politely, causing Kazuha to snap out of her thoughts. She nods with a friendly smile on her face, trying her best to adjust to her normal self again.

She caught a glimpse of you in her peripheral vision, seeing how you kept your eyes on the script. How you practiced in an energetic voice multiple times to sound as natural as possible.

The camera then gives you a small cue from behind the large camera, signaling that they were now live, and the two of you have soft grins on your faces. Kazuha does her best to mask any feelings she can as she goes, “Welcome to a special Music Bank with us as your MCs!”

“I’m AESPA Y/n,” you say, then look at her, and Kazuha bows slightly, “and I’m Lesserafim’s Kazuha.”

“Today we have a packed lineup.”

“That’s right, Kazuha-ssi. Today, we have stages from groups like MEOVV, I-DLE, RIIZE, Seventeen, and many more to come.” You tell the viewer, and the live audience is cheering.

Kazuha reads the script, dreading the interaction with you, and quickly asks, “Can I ask who you're looking forward to seeing?”

“Personally, I’ve been obsessed with ‘Hands Up,’ by MEOVV,” you announce and do the hand gestures of the chorus. Zuha tried her best to stop herself from rolling her eyes—yet you catch the tiniest sigh that peeks through. “How about you, Zuha-ssi?”

She faintly flinches at the nickname, not expecting it, especially since it wasn’t part of the script. “Hm~,” Kazuha acts as if she’s thinking, trying to gather herself. “I’m personally really excited to see Seventeen sunbaenim.” Kazuha does the hand gestures for the ‘THUNDER’ chorus, which has her hands stretched over her head, lifting up her dress slightly from your view. You quickly tug it down a bit, just enough to keep her image safe without interrupting.

While she felt your fingertips brush against her thigh, she felt her face burn up at the sweet gesture.

‘You were always such a gentlewoman,’ Zuha thought. She may have disliked you at the moment, but she wasn’t going to deny how much of a green flag you were.

She knew well in her heart that admitting that contradicted everything she had thought. Yet that’s what happens when you let your pride and ego get in the way, mixed with the pressures of being a Kpop idol.

“What an elegant version of the dance, Zuha-ssi. Wasn’t expecting anything less from you,” that's when her eyes go wide at the hushed tone of your voice, fans squealing at her reaction from the crowd.

Now that definitely wasn’t part of the script.

She shouldn’t have expected anything less from you, though. As you continued your lines, Kazuha’s mind drifted off to how professional you were acting, given the circumstances you were both in at the moment.

It almost pissed her off that you weren’t heartbroken in the ways she thought.

She knew how you detached easily, and although she expected it, there was an inkling in Kazuha’s heart that wanted you to look sad when first seeing her again. Like how Yunjin and Chaewon explained it, the few days after your breakup.

“See you all soon!” That brings Zuha back to reality, waving her hand as you did to the camera. She looks over at you, expecting you to say something after the ‘stunt’ you pulled, but she was surprised when you turned your back to her and walked off set to talk to a staff member.

Gosh, she could only think of how she wanted this day to be over with if this was how the interviews were going to turn out.

Well, in spite of her worries, the shooting of every group interview went as smoothly as it could. There were times when she was caught off guard by your improv, but she had learned to naturally flow with it. This gave the interactions some character that felt much more genuine to the fans, who then began to swoon over the two of you together.

It was then Seventeen’s turn. You two had given them the chance to introduce themselves, and since Kazuha had previously danced with MEOVV, it was your turn to be taught the choreography by Hoshi.

As he stepped forward, you handed Kazuha the mic and followed every instruction he had given. With the main dancer he is, Hoshi was particular in how he described every move, which helped you catch on easily.

“First, cover your face with both hands in a vertical line. Then interlace your fingers as if you're stretching them out towards the front and lean slightly more right, following with a pop. Then lift your hands in the same position more to the right above your head, then pop again,” He explained, then followed with the quick arm movements which you followed to a tee.

So when everyone cues for the music to begin, the camera focuses on you and Hoshi as Kazuha stands behind, beside the Seventeen members. She watched how your arm flexed during each move, and how you hit every bounce and arm move sharply.

Almost feeling the heat rising within her, she swallows while looking at how your muscles move as your hair flows with your movement. ‘I’m not the strongest soldier,’ she thinks to herself and hides her face while finally being able to roll her eyes without being in the camera's view.

As you finish, you and Hoshi bow at each other. Finally making proper eye contact with Kazuha that morning, you see the flush on her cheeks, which enables a smirk on your face.

She looks away quickly, finishing up the interview, and all the members say bye as they walk off, giving their label mate more attention since they knew each other. Before the two of you could exit and touch up for the awarding on stage, Kazuha stops you by grabbing your wrist while off the set.

You stare at her, confused, looking behind her to check that the crowd was no longer in view to see whatever was about to go down.

“What was all that?”

“All what?” You asked, bewildered as she huffed, “All the improv you were doing! Almost fifty percent of what you said wasn’t in the script!”

It was your turn to sigh, raking your long hair back with your fingers, something Kazuha loved to see you do as it was a simple action that made your muscles flex easily over your head. She could kiss or slap you right then and there, the urge to do either or, killed her slowly.

“I don’t see the issue. You went well with it after a while, and the fans loved it,” you say it in an obvious tone, and Kazuha groans in frustration.

“I literally hate you,” she mutters, only loud enough for you to hear, when you give a smirk and walk away slowly.

“Keep telling yourself that, babe.”

You left Kazuha standing there, stunned, at the pet name—she couldn’t even think of what to do next. How was she going to deal with you for the next ten minutes on stage?

Because you surely weren’t going to make it easy for her.

"I don't know whether to love or hate you right now," she finally mumbles to herself, while leaning her head back in misery.

I always see people say that there are many forms of love, not just romantic. Which, they are correct in. Yet, they still have a narrow view on it and refer to friendship as an example, or if they are big hearted their pet… Which is completely fine, I just felt a desire to create a pick a card that’s focused on love but none of those things. I never saw a pick a card with this topic before, neither on youtube or on tumblr. Could just be me though. Felt like making it anyway. If you don’t want children, that’s cool, I chose this topic because I would like to be a mother one day. This reading also applies to the first child you will have, or you know, the next one.

Alright, so I will be honest with you. Your next child will have some developmental issues, but not necessarily life threatening ones. - neither in a sense of d*ath or having trouble living on their own. they will just need a bit of help. - While asking your questions I stuttered a lot despite being calm, so I honestly think your child will have speech issues. Maybe potentially this could be genetic, or anything of the sort.. They will love you because even if you will have a hard time, where your mental health or emotional state will be tested you will never ever in your life will give them a hard time for whatever it is that they are struggling with. You will be loving, kind, gentle and patient with them. Not to say I am calling your child bratty, or a brat. That’s not where I am going with this, rather your guides pulled towards letting you know this first so you don’t misunderstand the rest of the reading.

You're the only pile that got an instrumental song for their song of the year which immediately gave me a vibe of peace and not letting the problems disturb you. By the way, if you've never heard this song I would definitely recommend it - it's by a Portuguese guitar player and the title means Green Years (as in still being green/young). You know, I think that this is a year of giving yourself grace and being gentle with yourself. Not everything will be perfect or go exactly as you dreamed it would, and that's perfectly fine, because in the end you will be okay. I do get this sense that you're already in this mentality and that's where the peace comes from. You have a belief that despite how wrong or how hard things are now it's just inevitable that everything will be fine.

The energy in your tarot cards is nothing if not interesting. There's a lot of anxiety and a sense of loss almost with the Ten and Nine of Swords, but on the other hand you also have victory and recognition with the Six of Wands. Pile 4 you have a very interesting energy because I got a lot of information just from the photo that represents your pile alone. It seems that summertime will be either the most significant part of the year (like a turning point happening for example) or the happiest part of the year for you. In general, I see a shift in your life, it's like suddenly the world is slightly tilted instead of being straight just like the horizon line isn't straight in your photo.

But let's get into your tarot. The Tower definitely supports this idea of a turning point and a shift in your life. With the Eight of Swords here too, to me it almost feels like you think that things are going to happen in a specific way but then something very unexpected happens and now suddenly your life is completely different. The only "specific" example I'm getting is of someone thinking that they're going to start university studying a specific degree in a specific place, but suddenly the results come out and you didn't get in. Maybe you got in a different place or in a different degree that ends up changing the plans you had until now. "Bring them in, Stevie. Thank you," you said, your voice dripping with a sultry tone. Your assistant entered and placed the gifts onto your couch. You resumed applying your makeup, but a tag from the gifts caught your eye. You see the 'tag', which turns out to be a card.

You chuckled, and your eyelids rested unintentionally seductively since you were drawn that way to be unintentionally seductive. "Oh, honey, you flatter me way too much. I'm just wearing a mere robe, and my hair is still in rollers," you said in your natural deep voice. Bill rolled his cat-like pupil eye and scoffed dramatically.

I haven’t pulled cards yet but I am using a deck I haven’t used in a while. As soon as I pulled the cards, I got a whiff of glue.

“C’mon baby, please just try.” Luke practically whined, he had been begging you to sketch him, but you had refused.

“Luke, it’s not gonna turn out well and it’s gonna be disappointing.” You reply, shading a section in with the mechanical pencil in hand. You’d been sketching the scenery as the two of you sat beside the lake, enjoying the warmth of the water. Luke had dragged you down to the lake to hang out, now you were here, his head resting on your stomach, body slotted between your legs.

“I’ve seen your drawing of Annabeth, it’s amazing baby, I know you can do it.” He insist, reminding you of a drawing that you hated.

“God, it was awful, the shading was all wrong and so were the nose proportions.” You groan, setting down the drawing of the scenery you were working on to tangle your hands in his hair. He hums softly, moving a hand to rest on your knee.

“I don’t know why you’re so hard on yourself, babe, you’re so talented.” He reassures, voice drenched with admiration.

“Thank you, I love you and how much you support me.”

“I love you too, baby.” He responds, closing his eyes and enjoying your warmth. Before he could enjoy it for long, you looked at your watch and realized the time.

“Luke, c’mon, you’re supposed to be helping some new kids with sparring.” You take his hand, helping him up and walking him toward the sparring grounds, listening to him grumble about his cuddles being interrupted.

Later that night, Luke and you found yourselves sitting in your usual spot beside the bonfire, his head rested on your shoulder. Your fingers carded through his curls, enjoying the soft texture of them against your rough hands.

“Mmmmm, I need to wash my hair tonight.” He hums, his voice vibrating against your chest. “Maybe you could draw me then.” He persists, and you let out a long sigh.

“Luke, I can’t draw you and help you wash your hair at the same time.” You remind, his face flushing red in embarrassment.

“C’mon, not everyone needs to know we shower together.” He whispers, earning a soft giggle from you.

“I don’t think anyone heard.” You reassure, smoothing a hand over his curls. Before he could reply, more people began to settle in beside the bonfire, causing the both of you to quiet down and pay attention.

You and Luke found yourselves back in the showers after the bonfire, your hands smoothing the conditioner into his hair. He began doing the same for you, pulling your warm, wet body to his once he finished applying conditioner to the ends of your hair.

“Can we use that fancy exfoliation thingy or whatever?” He asks quietly, making you smile a bit at his request.

“Yeah, yeah, of course.” You say, reaching for the container of sugar scrub behind you.

“Need to look good so you can draw me.” He murmurs, taking the container from you and scooping some of the scrub out. Rather than using it on himself first, he opted to scrub your chest with gentle circles.

“I- fine baby, I’ll draw you, only if you stay in my cabin tonight.” He groans as you speak, you knew he didn’t like staying in your cabin, since the girls tended to tease him.

“Fine.” He grumbles, continuing to wash your body as you did the same to his. You would never get tired of seeing him like this, warm droplets of water dripping down him as he took care of you so gently. You knew how he was one to give more than he could ever receive, his past trauma playing on how he acted in your relationship. You tried your best to show him the love he deserved, the love he never had.

The two of you were now snuggled down in your bed, changed into pajamas, bodies warm from the shower. Luke was in simple grey sweats, tugged down just enough to give a tantalizing view of the tanned, muscular planes of his stomach. Luke rubbed a hand along your hip and thigh, watching over your shoulder as you began the sketch.

“It looks good already, baby.” He murmurs, chin hooked over your shoulder.

“I’ve barely started.” You mumble, focused on capturing the sheer beauty of your sweet boyfriend. He closed his eyes, ready to rest. As he began to fall asleep, the girls from your cabin began to filter in, giggling as they saw Luke in your bed.

“Awww, Y/N’s got her little boyfriend over again, I hope everyone has earplugs tonight!” One of the girls giggles, causing Luke to groan in frustration.

“You can’t be talking when we can hear you and your boyfriend in the showers all the way over here.” You shoot back, causing the girl to flush red, turning her face away and muttering something as she made her way to her bunk.

“Thank you.” Luke hums, pulling you a little closer and pressing a kiss to your neck.

“Anytime.” You reply, voice low and soft as you pick up a pen to finalize the outlines.

“That looks amazing.” He murmurs, reaching over to smooth his thumb along the drawing, as if he didn’t believe it was real.

“Thank you.” You hum in response, continuing on the drawing.

Somewhere in the night, Luke eventually fell into a deep sleep, giggling occasionally to yourself when he’d snore or mumble something in his sleep.

“Lukey baby, wake up, I’m finished.” You whisper, shaking his shoulder softly to rouse him.

“You drew me?” He asked quietly, sleep drenching his voice like honey.

“Yeah, look at it baby, I think it’s pretty good.” You hand him your sketchbook, and his eyes widen, mouth dropping open.

“Wow, baby, this is incredible.” He whispers lazily against your skin, his lips tickling your neck. “Is this really what I look like?” He asks, running his thumb across the scar on his cheek in the drawing.

“Is- Is it bad?” You immediately reply, worried that it didn’t look like he wanted.

“No, no, I just didn’t think I was actually this attractive.” He murmurs.

“Oh baby, of course that’s what you look like. you’re like an angel to me baby.” You reassure, carding your finger through his still-damp curls.

“Oh- well, thanks for drawing me baby, I- I really really love it.” He murmurs once more, before tucking you down beside him in bed, quickly falling fast asleep.

Ever wanted to relive the stories woven by the Watchers, exceeding the limits of what Minecraft is able to offer? How about venturing in a perilous journey full of twists and turns, and most importantly, loooooooooooore?

Well, why hello there! To kick off the start of 2025, Kori, Arto and Pinkie here, and we are proud to present “Project LUMEN”! Our newest scheme to conceptualize and develop a video game based off the traffic-colored hearts we are all so familiar with. An ambitious project, that’s for sure, and that is why we are opening applications to join our little team, right on time to welcome the new year! :]

Once a pile of jumbled, senseless ideas, Project LUMEN has evolved into a more fleshed-out collection of story beats and mechanics. An RPG-like game revolving around the tales within the Life Series, a collection of death games ran by the mysterious deities that call themselves Watchers. The player takes on the role of the Watcher Child (affectionately referred to as WC), following and guiding the Champions chosen by the Watchers themselves through challenges and enemies. Featuring unique leveling systems, DnD inspired classes, and, most importantly, the ability to impact the story with the choices you make… because, after experiencing all the Life Series seasons from both the Watcher and the Player side, maybe you’ll have a change of mind. After all is said and done and seen, the world is yours to shape, Watcher Child.

Right, so that’s a basic summary of the concept we have, now here’s a little preview of what we have written for the prologue :3

Chapter 0: ‘The Watcher’s Apprentice’

The player takes the form of a Watcher in training, an ageless child, the Watcher Child. The most powerful and ancient Watchers, unexplained cryptic creatures that live up to their name by watching all, talk about a new series of experiments they have been running, called “The Life Series”.

The only rundown that the WC was given was that a carefully selected group of talented players were asked to test their little Life game for them, where they each have only three lives. Whoever survives last, wins. There were no rules as to how they could play the games. The Watchers then add that they, along other WCs, will be observing from the viewpoint and thoughts of one of the players. This is so the WC can get an idea of the Watchers' work. Of course, our little WC was ecstatic and ever so curious about this new idea.

Fast-forward (and after a couple of tutorials showing off the bare basics of the battle mechanics in the actual game), now our WC was standing in a circle with other apprentices just like them. The Watchers then hold a deck of mystic cards in front of each of them, and everyone picks one. When the cards are revealed, our WC sees a glowing, red card with a person on it. The card simply said, "THE SUN".

Huh, I wonder who could that be…

Now, we get into the thick of it: who are we searching for to join our team? Well, there are some requirements that the potential members should fulfill, here’s a comprehensive list of key points:

We are mainly looking for artists to help us with designs, sprites, backgrounds and UI. Although, we also welcome any writers willing to help us with developing concepts and adding more ideas!

Every person who applies should be involved with the Life Series fandom, we want to build a team with people as passionate about this Minecraft series as we are!

Welp, glad you asked. The current plan is, while the applications go on for a week or two, constantly post pieces of concept art and just story bits on this blog, then all the people selected to join the team will be added to the blog as members. We plan to post updates, concept art, sprites and small lore drops periodically on that blog to hopefully garner an audience, and it will also be open for asks and suggestions so that, even if some users aren’t part of the team, they can still help bring this absolute beast of a game to life. Ideally we will work on a small demo experience first with placeholders and stuff to just get the mechanics right and get some testers, and after that, use all feedback, polish the art, deliver a beta version for playtesting, then fix the last details and then release the full version on itch.io, that’s our roadmap. :D (there's the possibility to also publish a browser version to Newgrounds with mobile compatibility tho, so mobile users do not fear!)

Well, Project LUMEN is a very, very hefty task, a big plan to undertake, and, in all honesty, too much work for only three people. Also, talking from experience, having other person involved in development has helped LUMEN to give gigantic steps, helping to ground ideas and give inspiration, now, imagine how far we could go if we had more people in this squad. We are not only looking for artists, we are looking for people whom we can brainstorm with and throw concepts around to polish them and grow the game even more. However, we also wish to keep the team directly working on the game fairly reduced, we are thinking 3–5 people more, but depending on the amount of responses we have, we might consider expanding that number.

The spirit of the game is to be made by the community for the community, we want to offer a quality game, and, by working together, we will be able to make Project LUMEN the best it can be. Though, you need to be aware that this project is solely fueled by the passion we have for the Life Series, and we will not profit off it at all. Please, take into account that this is likely going to be a months-long project, and only apply if you are willing to put in the effort in the long-run, that’s all we ask for.

On the bright side though, by joining in the developing of the game, you’ll be able to contribute to it as much as you’d like, change anything, add anything! You’ll have your rightful spot in the credits and probably a cameo in-game, the team may be small, but we know that, with the right people, we will be able to get it done (cleo is in the storyline too dw).

I just played through chapter two and oml it was stunning. I had to pause several times because i kept giggling and took a lap around my room when i got the cirrus and keir good end. Props to the artist and writer because their work is incredible.

Anyways, I’d like to ask a few questions, though some of these have probably been asked beforehand.

Firstly, do the choices about your features matter when keir asks you about your best feature and eye color? As in, will it change anything other than the text?

Secondly, under the assumption that the answer to the first question is yes, how much can we customize our vesper? Will there even be a face reveal where the player can decide or is there a canon vesper with only the eye color changing?

Thirdly, is there ever going to be a point where we change masks or names? In a route where it is needed for this to happen after vesper gets themself in a rough spot?

Lastly, are we ever going to know the real names of every major character? We already know francesco’s because of how naive he is but what about the others? This also applies to vesper, will they ever get a name reveal?

Sorry if some of these questions have the potential to spoil anything, feel free to make your answer as vague as possible.

Whoo, that's a lotta questions. Here's the short answers:

The appearance chat with Keir has a lot of text variations, but they're all for flavour. There's no affection score or story branching occurring because of that.

While we'll never say never, I don't think a Vesper face reveal is in the cards. There are things that are important about Vesper that are definitely canon that we have to depict in-game, but their appearance isn't one of those things.

Without getting too philosophical before the caffeine has kicked in, I think there's an argument to be made that the only character working under a false name is Oleander. Keir and Cirrus' names are the ones they use with their core community, which as far as I'm concerned is what a real name is. It's the name you use with the people who matter most to you, not the name you were first given as a baby.

You weren’t sure how he felt about your work to begin with. He mostly just likes watching you create stuff whether that be you hunched over a computer or furiously drawing into a notebook. He just stands in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his arms crossed as he eyes you down. Asking him what hes doing will only result in him answering “Watching.” Before he continues to stare at you. But later on you realised he was admiring your ethic, how you looked while you were passionately at work. He found those quiet moments were his way of getting to know you on a deeper level.

Pictures on the wall, sculptures on the shelves, Writing printed and bound into books, he will literally make your house a gallery dedicated to you. You show him anything you make and after a load of praise he turns around and goes, “So, where do you think it’s gonna fit?” Because he just imediately assumes that an art as beautiful as this deserves to be displayed for everyone to see. He just loves how your art decorates the home, and how everytime he comes back, your little gallery grows. Like a forest that grows and expands with time. Each room has a piece of you in it.

She’s never been much of an art person. I mean, there was a temporary phase of art theft and forgery, but that was more of a business venture rather than a passion like yours. But she does appreciate what you make, even if its not her thing. I do think that one day she asks you to take one of your works (a photgraph, a painting, drawing, sculpture, snippet of writing, anything really) and give it to her so she can get a replica tattooed on her body. That would be her little dedication to you.

the in game justification for all of the card art is that the mc draws them herself. the game also confirms she will alter aspects for "artistic interpretation" so all card art, no matter how ridiculous or fan servicey, is affected by MC Vision

know how otome boys tend to be good at most things? there's an in universe explanation. four of the five boys are paragons: they appear in every single universe and will protect the world in times of crisis. it makes sense they'd be good at a lot of things. the fifth ml is immortal and. well. has had time to practice a lot of skills.

mc is allowed to be good at art, without any of the mls outshining her. even cael, who is also a skilled artist, states that mc's art has emotion and feeling that he is incapable of capturing. they both share a hobby and have different strengths and weaknesses, rather than cael being The Insanely Talented Artist and mc being the rookie artist who kinda sucks and needs to learn how not to suck from cael

lack of favoritism. there is no canon boy. and there is no "we can't say a boy is canon but you can tell we reeeaaalllly want this guy to be the canon one" boy. each ml has a universe where they are the most important final route, amongst several other things.

you can make your in game profile picture the mc, as well as several other npcs who have their own cards. you can also raise affinity with npcs, unlock scenes for a few important ones, and get rewarded for befriending them

fanservice takes a back seat to plot and characterization. even blatant fanservice cards tend to be in character or solely initiated by the mc (with the mls going along to make her happy). if neither of these apply, there's usually an in universe explanation as to why (typically because it's an au where the whole point is that it's exaggerated and ooc)

your friends list in game is actually useful - you can use an assist card from anyone on your friends list to help beat different levels!

the mls all have flaws that are seamlessly tied into their characterizations, and act as an extension of their virtues rather than cheaply tacked on last minute additions.

don't like a particular story line or route? there's several canonical timelines where none of it even happens. the world is YOUR oyster.

Does Yana have any part in making of the novels and manga and soon to be anime? Since she doesn't seem to have much say on the game...

Hello hello! Thank you for this question!

It is possible that Yana might have very much say on the game 👀

Inside the app itself she is credited as the creator of the game's concept, the main scenario creator, the character designer and the creative director for everything overall.

In a 2020 interview she said:

“I create the scenarios and I write the main story. I am also in charge of drafting, writing, and directing the events and vignettes. On the graphics side I do all of the character design including designing the chibis, all the card illustrations and designs for the props and backgrounds.”

She also explains how she went into her initial meeting with Disney expecting to only do the character designs, but in the end was made responsible for the basis of the entire game.

She is also the creator of the plot of the main story and wrote the lessons in dialogue, on the home screen and when leveling (together with a writer from her personal studio).

She is so involved that she even writes notes to the voice actors and the sound director, influencing the vocal performances, and has approved the English-language localization of the unique magics.

And she has so much say that she retracted Riddle's original, Disney-approved design (which was also of her own creation) in favor of the Riddle that we have today! ^^

Much of this information is from the game's release (the "notes from Yana to the VAs" information is recent) and now, five years on, there is sometimes curiosity about how much Yana remains involved.

She provides us with regular updates on her involvement, with one of the more recent being how she is still in charge of the main story.

The Novels

Yana says she was in charge of the concept, the in-novel art, cover and fold-out art in the novels, while Hioki Jun (a Twst vignette/event scenario writer) is the author. 

The Manga

The artist and designer behind the 1st and 3rd comic arcs are both from Yana’s studio D-6th, doing background and card art for Twst.

Yana says that her role is overall collaboration, character design and character creation (she says that in addition to creating the basis for Trey’s parents she also designed Riddle’s mother, including her face, but they ultimately left her in silhouette).

It is difficult to tell what Yana means by “overall collaboration," but she has shared a tweet about drawing the characters out herself for the official artists to base their work on.

(This might not apply to the artists of the Savanaclaw or Scarabia arcs, who are not Yana's personal employees.)

There was some curiosity after the announcement of the anime, with Yana commenting that she was surprised to hear that it is going to be based on the manga and she is looking forward to what it is going to be like, insinuating that she did not make that decision herself and may not be involved at all.

And the anime's first, original announcement? It credits Yana as the creator of the game, but does not list her as a member of the team behind the anime.

In a different series of tweets from early 2024, she provided more detail about how it is normal for her to not be involved in adaptations of her own work, saying she lets other creators do what they like with adaptations of her work where she is the copyright holder.

And with works outside of Kuroshitsuji, where she is not the copyright holder, she has even less influence in adaptations, saying that she will often not even know what adaptations are being planned and sometimes she is not approached for help. As Disney holds the copyright for Twst, that is possibly what happened here!

To put everything together, the game seems to be where Yana might have the most influence out of every iteration of Twst, even five years on.

She also seems to have some influence in the Heartslabyul and Octavinelle arcs of the manga, but this might be an unusual arrangement made possible by how the official artist and layout designer are also both her own employees.
