On Catastrophic Failures

After working through a silly design mistake and then having to reverse engineer my own project to make up for my own bad habits, my 68030 homebrew computer was running great. Better than ever, in fact — I finally had it running stable at 50MHz. It was absolutely flying.

The only thing keeping the machine from running faster was my 8-port serial card, which really needed another wait state to surpass the 50MHz mark. Luckily, I had designed the board with this need in mind and had included a jumper to select between 0 to 3 wait states. Unfortunately I had missed a single exclamation point in the logic equations for that wait state generator and so the signals were inverted. Not to worry — it's reprogrammable. I just need to add the missing mark, recompile, and re-burn the chip.

And that's when everything went wrong.

All I did was swap out the logic chip for the serial card, why won't the computer boot anymore? I haven't even changed the jumper setting yet. Swapping that chip shouldn't have affected anything else.

... It's not booting even with the serial card disconnected.

Out comes the oscilloscope. Reset is good, but nothing else is moving. All the bus signals are holding steady instead of doing their jobs.

Lower the clock speed; still nothing. Double-, triple-check power supply and bus connections; still nothing. Check the clock pin on the CPU ... nothing.

There's no clock signal on the CPU, so it can't do anything.

A quirk of this design, coming from my limited knowledge when I first started building it, is that the bus control CPLD drives the CPU clock, not the oscillator directly (the original intent was to divide the bus clock for the CPU — something that was more common in the 8-bit era). If there is no CPU clock something must be wrong with the CPLD.

That CPLD seems awfully warm.

I pulled the CPLD and dropped it in my programmer. ATMISP reported that the chip was not blank. That meant it was at least responding to some JTAG queries. I tried erasing the chip and it reported success. I tried reflashing my bus controller configuration. It failed verification every time. Nothing left to do but pull it and try another chip.

That's when I noticed not only was it getting quite hot, but it was drawing enough current that the LED on my programming adapter wasn't even lit. Something in that chip had shorted and was causing excessive current draw. Luckily I have some spares. New chip burns without any problems. Drop in into the main board and success — we have clock and bus signals!

But it's still not booting.

Out comes the oscilloscope again. Address strobes are working as expected. Cycle termination is happening as expected. ROM read & enable strobes are working as expected. RAM and the on-board serial port are never getting selected.

Time for the logic analyzer. After working through bus signals 16 at a time, I finally got to the point where I was watching enough of the address bus to see what it was loading.

The CPU was stuck in an odd loop. It would load the initial stack pointer & reset vector as normal, then start fetching & executing instructions. But before it had even finished fetching the second instruction, it would go back to loading the reset vector, then start again with fetching & executing instructions. Then it would go back to the beginning with loading the initial stack pointer & reset vector, and just continue on in this fashion endlessly.

There is nothing I'm aware of in the documentation that describes this behavior. It is possible to halt the CPU on startup by trying to use a misaligned stack pointer or reset vector, but it's not indicating a halt.

Thoroughly stumped, I turned to Discord for help. One user, [arminius97] had encountered something similar with the 68020 that ultimately required replacing the CPU. Another user well-versed in the 68030, [transistorfet], helped me walk through possibilities, and ultimately we came to the conclusion that something is very wrong with this CPU.

So something burned up my CPLD and my CPU.

I have one other 68030 CPU — a full-featured ceramic-package chip rated for 25MHz (it was my plastic-package 40MHz 68EC030 that failed). Time to swap chips around and see what happens.

A memory error.

It was running code! But it was also consistently reporting a memory error on startup at address 0x00000084. Always the same location, always the same bad byte. So I swapped around SRAM chips. The error followed. I have a bad memory chip.

So that's a CPLD, a CPU, and an SRAM chip that all failed at the same time.

This is quite a setback, especially because it had been running better than ever before. I don't even have any spare 4mbit SRAM chips I can test with. Repairs will be expensive.

Perhaps this is a good time to spring for some 15ns or faster SRAM and run with no wait states for main memory. Or perhaps I could finally finish building & testing the 72-pin SIMM board I assembled for this machine years ago.

I plan on exhibiting this build running the multi-user BASIC setup this June at VCFSW, so I do have a bit of a ticking clock to get it up and running again. I'm sure I'll figure something out.

Finally got my Eurorack system updated on ModularGrid — I hadn't gotten around to setting up a few of my custom modules, like the Harald Bluetooth Receiver, the Toy Drum, my true diode Ring Modulator, and my analog logic module "Lola".

Starting with the top left is the Behringer Radar, a contact mic and input amplifier with a gate and a triggered envelope. It's a version of the Mutable Instruments Ears (itself an adaptation of the MTM Mikrophonie); the big change is that all the sensitivity and envelope jumpers are brought out to front panel switches.

Next is one of North Coast Synthesis's "Passive Multiples and Friends", which I built as a mult.

Next is the Behringer Model 182, a clone of the Roland Model 100-series analog sequencer. (A Christmas gift from my wife's parents!)

Next is the MidCentury Modular Dividers, which combines a binary clock divider (simultaneous ÷2 - ÷128) and an adjustable (÷2 - ÷9) divider, both based on CMOS chips. (Built from a PCB/panel set).

Next is my homebrew analog logic module Lola. It has two sections: the unary input which takes one signal and outputs its inverse and its half- and full-wave rectified versions, and the binary input which gives you the OR, AND, and XOR of two signals. (Lola is named that because it's mostly based on the Mutable Instruments module "Kinks". I left off its S&H and added the XOR.)

Next is Chaos, a clone of the MI Marbles random gate and voltage generator.

Next is a set of two low-pass gates, made from vactrols, which I built onto a buggy (malformed) version of my oscilloscope module panel.

Next is my LittleBits Adapter, which lets me plug in the magnet-based circuit building toy modules including those from the Korg collab.

On the second row, we start with the Behringer Model 150, another Roland 100 series clone; this one is noise, a S&H, a ring mod (actually a chip based four quadrant multiplier), and an LFO.

Next looks like another Passive Multiples and Friends, but this one is my Simple Cascading Fixed Amplifier, a set of four fixed amplifiers set up to do x2, x10, or x20 without modifications and up to x400 with self-patching.

The next is a Passive Multiples and Friends, this one an OR Combiner meant to combine multiple gate or trigger signals.

Next is the Kassutronics VCO 3340, an analog VCO I built from the PCB/panel set — basically the CEM3340 chip broken out plus a sine wave output (though the chip is actually the AS3340 clone).

After that is the 3320-VCF by PM Foundations, a low-pass filter with voltage-controlled cutoff and resonance, again built from PCB/panel.

Then it's my first VoxMachina Sigma function/slew generator, followed by a dual attenuverter/mixer, followed by the second Sigma — all together basically a workalike of the Make Noise Maths. The Sigma is very versatile but mostly ends up used for envelopes and LFOs. I had the pcbs and panels fabricated from VoxMachina's uploaded Gerber files.

Next is another Passive Multiple.

The next is a Behringer Four Play, four VCAs that can be used separately or mixed together. It's a functional rip-off of, I believe, Intellijel's quad VCA design.

Next is my homemade ring modulator, a proper two-transformers-and-a-diode-ring unpowered design.

After that, built into another PMaF panel, are two copies of the IamO single-JFET VCA, followed by my version of David Haillant's Simple VCA.

And last in the center row is the Modular in a Week "A Simple Mixer, Right?" (ASMR). A basic five-channel mixer with plain and inverted outputs, I got this as a kit.

In the third row, we start with MiaW's POW, which has LEDs for each power rail, a USB power jack, an external Eurorack power breakout, and a switch that currently doesn't do anything. (I'm still debating whether I should add case lighting.)

Next is a very simple reverse-avalanche oscillator with (not particularly tracking) voltage control, built from LMNC schematics.

Next is the Behringer Brains, their adaptation of the MI Plaits; it's a tremendously versatile voice that's way too tempting to leave on speech synthesis mode.

After that is another Simple Cascading Fixed Amplifier. I think this one uses inverting amplifiers and the other uses non inverting ones?

Next is the Toy Drum — I tore apart one of those electronic drum kits with the roll-up rubber pads and wired up inputs to four of the triggers, giving me a cheap but cheerful kick, snare, hat, and cymbal set.

Next is the Harald Bluetooth Receiver, the module out of a DIY Bluetooth speaker; it'll play stuff off a paired phone, or read files from a microSD card or USB stick.

Next is the DSPFX, a very cheap 100-in-1 audio effects board, which I often use to add end-of-chain reverb/delay and stereo separation. Built from MiaW design, though I had the panel fabricated.

The final PMaF is wired in passive mixer mode; it usually combines the ASMR mixer's output with the stereo output from the DSPFX, the two channels feeding the Phonic, my custom headphones output device (based on the circuit from the Befaco Out).

That's a total of 6 purchased modules, 2 kit builds, 3 PCB/panel builds, 5 PMaF panel builds, 2 fabs from Gerbers, and 13 modules of assorted more custom building, all in a homemade case. Not too shabby, I guess.

Chaos manipulation

Allows user to manipulate the typically passive chaos energy currents (CECs)

Can never be truly 100% controlled because "chaos is a sovereign force" aka it can't be put under total control. Due to this, there can and will always be random fluctuations in the end product of a chaos manipulation.

CECs are typically colorless and don't interact with any physical plane, however upon being put under control, it takes up a color, viscosity (although most constructs are solid), and volume; changing to the controller's will

(The color is one of the most important aspects, as it entirely determines the nature of the construct) (from this point, when referring to subtractive colors, Sc, and when additive colors, Ac)

Chaos constructs (Sc)

- physical manifestations of CECs, usable in a wide variety of ways

- can take up the form of any physical object

- hand sign needed (closed fist) to manifest

-a "subclass" of CCs: Chaos Summons

- have no real rules, except that there can only be one major construct summoned at a time by a controller (Major Constructs: chaos summons, also large constructs )

- these are constructs that take up the form of living animals, that can aid the controller

- there are five chaos summons:

- magenta, cyan, gold, the serpent*, and the clone**

-* the serpent is the only summon that is able to change it's own color dynamically and adaptively

-** the clone can be summoned with any color, chosen by the controller (this cannot be changed for as long as the clone is active) (iconc: the clone is that of the controller, not of a selected target)

- each CS requires its own unique hand sign in order to be summoned.

- magenta, cyan and gold can take the form of different animals, and this requires the user to make new hand signs for them

Chaotic Speech (powerwords, PWs) (Ac)

- singular words imbued with chaos energy.

- can have different effects based on the word spoken (ex.: "stop"/"immobilise" makes the target unable to move for a duration)

- (color also depends on the word)

- the color of these all depend on the function of the word

- these include actions influenced and fused with CECs

Chaos actions (spells) (CAs) (Ac)

-ex. teleportation, energy slashes, and energy beams

- these also require unique hand signs, which in this case can be dynamic (can be moved) instead of having to be held still

COLOR SYSTEM:

Sc:

- magenta, cyan, gold (ik it's yellow stfu), red, green, Nblue, Rblue, purple, pink, orange, lime are the most often used, although these can be mixed further to mix certain qualities

Magenta: easiest to use offensively, as it is the lightest and third most durable one. Due to it's lightness, it's easy to move around fast. Counter to this is green.

Cyan: much denser, thus harder to move than magenta, however this is the single toughest one of all colors. Typically used defensively or as a way to trap a target. Counter to this is red.

Gold: the only metastable color. Cannot physically interact with objects or other constructs, however this color posesses something of a force field that gets more powerful the closer it gets to the centre of the construct (like a reverse black hole but not really). Due to it not being able to interact with them in a tangible way, it cannot be countered by any color, but its force field is severely weakened by cyan and Nblue

Red: being the mix of magenta and gold, it inherits the lightness of magenta and an inverted version of gold's repelling force, instead pulling in anything around it. This makes for a fast way to reposition yourself or a target of choice. Counter to this is cyan.

Green: mix of blue and gold, this color is an adaptive one. Best for creating illusions and clones. Countered by magenta.

Nblue: being the mix of cyan and magenta, this colour is the second toughest one. Moderately fast, pretty generic choice for defense or offense. Gold's force field can easily bend and break this however

Rblue: takes more of the density from cyan, thus creating a hyper-dense, near unbreakable construct. This comes at the cost of having almost none of the flexibility or speed from magenta. Best counter is orange.

Purple: unique in the fact that this is one of the only colors that can have it's desity actively changed. This allows for both offensive but also defensive use. This, however requires utmost focus and physical strength. Countered by lime.

Pink: also has a field, but unlike yellow, repelling objects, this one simply slows, numbs or completely stops targets from moving within its range depending on amplification (which, like with purple, takes physical strain on the user). Countered by turquoise.

Orange: despite being closely related to gold, orange shares almost no aspect of itself with it. Instead, this takes on the form of an acidic adhesive, which is great for grappling or immobilising targets. Countered by R and Nblue

Lime: this color is unique as it can change its opacity. This, along with the sturdiness from cyan, this makes it good for forming invisible barriers (just like before, changing the opacity takes force). Countered by purple.

Turquoise: this color most often takes the form of a fluid that is able to have its volume changed by the user. (Can drown people). Countered by pink.

When referring to "countering" another color, the process is as such: the two colors make contact, then, from that point of contact both constructs fizzle into nothing.

Highest quality: white: can have any and all attributes controlled by user. Uncounterable, but can be slowed, also requires a trade of self force* in order to achieve.

(* self force: the very essence of one's physical form. Mortal creatures cannot afford to lose even a fraction of this as it most often results in death.)

Ac:

Red, blue, yellow base along with purple, green and orange are most often used

Additive colors are used for actions and PWs.

In Ac, there are no counters like in Sc.

- red: manipulates a target's physical attributes via external force. Examples of this are PW "accelerate" or "halt".

- blue: manipulates the physical attributes of a target via forceful command. Example of this PW "liquefy".

- yellow: only works well on conscious targets, greatly hindered effect on non-conscious life. Manipulates the psychological attributes of the target. Example: emotion-related PWs ("sorrow", "anger", "apathy", etc)

- purple: mix of red and blue, thus controls the physical attributes completely.

- green: mix of yellow and blue, controlling psychological attributes via forceful command (pretty much mind control)

- orange: mix of red and yellow, controlling psychological attributes via external force. Examples: memory creation and erasure.

Highest quality: black: total control of the target. This, once again requires a trade of self to achieve. Ex.: PW "death"

Thoughts on JJK chapter 228 (Spoiler)

Gonna start at the end this time because this is huge! Mahoraga's wheel is seen spinning, meaning that the shikigami just adapted to one of Gojo's techniques. Questions we have:

Since when is the wheel active?

Has Gojo seen it?

If not, why?

1) if the wheel has been active this entire time then Mahoraga has adapted to: Purple Hollow, Red, Infinity. He hasn't adapted to: Blue, the sure-hit of Gojo's domain, other techniques that aren't part of infinity. It could also be that Sukuna activated the wheel during a late and unseen part of the battle but all things considered, I doubt it.

2) the wheel is obviously hidden inside Sukuna's shadow and the last blurb at the end of the chapter points to Gojo having seen it. If that's true, then the wheel has only recently been activated OR it's only now that Gojo has looked for something like that after seeing and analysing Sukuna's unusual fighting behavior.

3) why would the wheel have been that well hidden before the Six Eyes, which makes CE visible, anyway? Scenario one: Mahoraga's cursed energy is the same as Sukuna's and inside the manipulated shadow the wheel becomes invisible because it's imbued with Sukuna's CE as well. Scenario two: the shadow is the natural enemy of the Six Eyes and makes things inside of it invisible to its user by default.

On that last point. Since we have been told of those old Gojo and Zenin clan heads who battled each other to death, I've seen the Ten Shadows being a composite technique like the 6E + limitless combo. It would therefore make sense the first part of the 10S would be a counter to the 6E.

And truly, I saw no one theorizing that the wheel might be hidden inside the shadow and that is kinda embarrassing for us fans. So my new and bonkers prediction for the future is:

Gojo is going to pull out the Inverted Speer of Heaven and that chain that changes length to fight Sukuna with and Gege will time the chapter release perfectly to coincide with the episode where Toji does the same.

His domain suddenly had the ability to clone his shikigami. Is this part of a normal technique he should have and only managed to activate inside the domain or is his domain special like those of H and H?

If you're all keeping track, Megumi's domain just got another hype just like when it was said that using external barriers to create one was unusual. Things like this harden my theory on Megumi gaining enough control over his body to activate his Domain Expansion to fight Sukuna himself.

Both Gojo and Sukumi have some good looking panels this chapter. Gojo's eyes nearly pop off the page.

For last chapter I said that Gojo learns fighting techniques and stuff on the spot while Sukuna relies on past experience. Now we have the observation that Sukuna might do it just like Gojo! This is a tough fight for the strongest but I've said it since the beginning: this battle is going to be fought in stages. Of course it would be ideal if Gojo were to win outright but even Kenjaku said that in case Gojo lost the others will come next.

Now when will that happen? My guess since this chapter: Gojo will simply tap out at some point to recuperate and let the others fight in a coordinated attack. He just needs to weaken Sukuna enough to do that without risking everyone else dying in 5 seconds.

All this time we have had to read talk on Gojo's strength weakening and that he might lose but we haven't seen anyone suggesting that Sukuna might gonna lose. This is of course part of the narrative. We as readers and the others as observers don't know enough about Sukuna's abilities to properly gauge how much energy he had to use until now and how much longer he's able to fight. All of this is for the tension of course.

Makora vs Mahoraga: transliteration vs translation

The translation site I read this chapter on used Makora for the tenth shikigami, saying that that's the way it's pronounced and indeed, that's what it says beside the Kanji in the above image:

魔虚羅, まこら, makora

Mahoraga is the Indian name of the race of deities and the inspiration of this shikigami but

The Japanese version of it is actually Magoraga with only two kanji being the same. Gege most likely changed the name because his creation was more inspired by the race of the Mahoraga than actually being a representation of them. The first translations saw the inspiration and went with the original name while this one said, guys look, the anime is going to pronounce it Makora and that's what we're sticking with.

My Enderman headcanons

They evolved from humans - their ancestors fled to the End where they were forced to adapt to the harsh environment once stuck there (thanks Ender Dragon)

Due to End being quite waterless, they evolved to absorb moisture from the air. But for such, if there's "too much moisture" (direct contact with water, for example) their cells can't hold that much and explode.

Another notable change is how they see the world - they see in inverted colours to help them navigate in the darkness

Endermen are biologically immortal (cannot die of old age)

They are taller with long arms to better reach the Chorus fruit, their main (and usually only) diet

They are born albino as there is no sunlight in the End

But Ludrii, the Endermen aren't albino when we see them?? Do they change colours while they grow up or what?

Well- yeah, basically. Buckle up, here's where things get funky. I mentioned the Chorus fruit, aye? So, in short, through the consuption of the fruit (which teleports them around randomly, taking them through the higher dimension where Endermites live) they can get infected by the Endermites (pretty much borrowed from Wifies' theory - but I expanded 👁️). Here's a handy illustration with some info bits to which I will get momentarily

So, as I've said, all Endermen are born albino little Shy Guys

Thanks to the veins underneath the skin though, they are not pure white, but lean into the pinkish or purplish

Eyes are completely white and slightly glowy

Hereditary dark patches may appear on skin

As the Endermen begin to eat the Chorus fruit, literally the only food accessible in the End (thanks Ender Dragon for not letting us out) changes begin to appear

The eyes go from white into a warm colour, usually red, orange or yellow. This is completely harmless.

This next thing that can happen, tho, not so much.

Since the Chorus fruit teleports them a bit each time they eat one, there's a chance they might get.. infected. You see, teleportation happens through a higher dimension of sorts (kinda like using Nether to access distant parts of Overworld quicker), and this dimension just so happens to be the home of Endermites. And those just so happen to be parasites - interdimensional parasites.

For such risk, the eating of Chorus fruit is often regarded as Phase/Stage 0

Stage 0 of what, you may ask? This-

The infection

Stage 1 - Endermite settles in

Permanent discoloration of the skin and organs, spreading from the chest. It often picks a side to start with to disable one hemisphere of the brain faster and take control over more effectively.

As the brain gets attacked, it causes severe memory problems, weakening of will, emotional dysregulation and later on first signs of "aggravating" via eye contact.

Eyes get affected as well, turning bright green at the start

Ender Pearl begins to form around the Endermite as a defence mechanism. If taken out, it could kill the parasite and stop the infection. It is risky at this stage however, as it could leave remnants. Remnants bad.

Stage 2 - fully infected

Loss of memory and identity

The stripes (inherited from humans - yes, humans have stripes! They just happen to be "invisible") become fully visible. These stripes are unique for each Enderman, although a common occurance is a star shaped patch on the chest (caused by the Endermite - it is not in the original genetic code of an uninfected Enderman)

Particles start to appear, gray in appearance, akin to smoke clouds

Stage 3 -final

Endermite's reign is in full power. For such, the Enderman "gains" the Endermite's ability to teleport.

Also, the eyes and particles turn purple

Endermen now get aggravated via eye contact

Now, after all that's been said, it is not impossible to save the Endermen. Ender Pearl is now fully formed, and thus it is safe to rip it out surgically remove it. This will get rid of the Endermite, and while most changes are permanent (colour of eyes and skin, for example, though it may fade with age), the Enderman will have a free will again. At the cost of teleportation, though.

Other bits! - Common mutations (often combined)

Human remnants - physical ears, nose, hair

New - horns, tusks Human mutations^2 (humans have these too, tho not as often) - heterochromia, tails, fur

Just a little heads up regarding the sexual humour in Undead Unluck in the manga it’s gone after a couple of chapters in the beginning. If you were to take a look at the story now and look at the beginning you wouldn’t think it’s the same story. So it’ll probably be a few episodes until it goes away. I felt the same when I first started reading it and now watching the anime I find it cringe because I kinda blocked it out 😭 but it’s still a good story with great characters I like how the studio is adapting it. Hope you enjoy future episodes :) also looking forward to your reviews !!

Well isn't that some good news haha.

It's good to hear that because the narrative structure and world is immediately appealing through these first two episodes. The author is clearly intelligent in how they do things because of how they paired up the two negators in this episode, in my opinion.

Sticking characters together with similar abilities is an easy way to confuse characters and readers/viewers alike, because where one ability ends and the other begins can be a bit of a hazy line, and they use Fuuko to represent that in contrast to Andy. It's also very nice to see them immediately go for a negation that isn't too simple since it gives viewers something to mull over for next week.

Apparently this has turned into a full blown rambling of my thoughts once more, so let me hide the rest because of talking theory haha

On the topic of negators and their abilities, I personally feel like Shen's negation is has something to do with desire or impulse. Their negation can be seen as "simple" when you look at it in just Fuuko's context (or even Andy's as well if you're not really paying attention. While it might sound similar to how Andy describes it as "will", Shen's hint of it being a power that works on "your deep psyche". Will is the representation of something much more shallow. Sort of like the idea of conscious will vs unconscious impulse.

Anyways, an example of where things get jumbled up is Shen is able to cause Fuuko to run in reverse, which is a surprisingly similar feat to how he allows Andy to aim for his weak point so that he can "invert" Andy's actions like Fuuko. But it can't just be the act of reversal, as Andy ends up frozen by Shen when he hesitates about killing him.

If I were to try and explain it in my own words, Shen is negating the instinct of the characters. Fuuko didn't think about running to Andy, she just did it. Andy didn't "think" about not killing Shen, he physically hesitated. That sort of thing.

Anyways, to bring a long story short here, the depth expressed so quickly with Negators shows a lot of potential in how the author is approaching the concept which is great to see. Oh, and also thanks to Shen's dialogue towards the end of the episode, their power works on looking at the individual. You could argue that it's "eye contact", but Andy's fight vs Void shows that mutual eye contact isn't a requirement (though Shen does only close a single eye once during the sequence, so it's shown that you don't need both eyes on the target for it to work).

But I'll got a step further regardless. Immediately, the benign rule of 10 Negators in the Union poses an interesting question. Why only ten? Personally, it sounds like someone, or something is using the Union as puppets to cull and control the negators around the world. You might say, "well that makes sense", but it doesn't. If the Union can wield Negators as a weapon, why would they kill them, and why would they so quickly accept the people that killed Union members as their replacements?

It reeks of an unseen hand controlling negators and their population through the Union, but aside from a group in direct opposition of the Negators, I'm not sure what it would be. I'd have a hard time believing it's a Negator that's at the head of this plot, but it's not like we have any examples of people that are whatever the opposites of a negator would be called.

The thing that confuses me the most though is the seats. Ten seats at a table that resembles a clock (where are the other two?), and I can't help but be reminded of the clock in the first episode's cold open, as well as the visuals that appeared when the clock struck midnight (does removing the last two seats of twelve have something to do with the visuals, or with Andy and Fuuko specifically?). Could a doomsday be in the cards, or is it something to do with a Negator that can control time? Or am I just reading way too far into this?

Only manga readers will know I guess, which makes it even funnier that this is responding to someone who read the manga. I just couldn't help but mull over my thoughts here though so I hope you don't mind.

So yeah, past the very rough and prickly humor here, these first two episodes have a lot going for them in reassuring me that there's a really good story ready to unfold.

The relationship between Ella and Margarethe is abused and abuser, yes, and definitely not mother and daughter. When I think of how to talk about them, what I think of is the dynamic between Elphaba and Dorothy in Wicked (the book, not the musical) (I have words I could say about that adaptation. btw):

“You’re my soul come scavenging for me, I can feel it,” said the Witch. “I won’t have it, I won’t have it. I won’t have a soul; with a soul there is everlastingness, and life has tortured me enough.”

In the book, Elphaba is the daughter of a fundamentalist preacher who considers her greenness and otherness a punishment for his sins. As an adult and political agent, she repeatedly rejects the possibility of having human, vulnerable feelings (when Fiyero initiates their affair, she resists, telling him, "I'm not a woman, I'm not a person, no") and disbelieves in the existence of her soul due to a combination of self-loathing and self-distrust, borne of her lifetime of rejection by the world.

When Dorothy Gale is sent by the Wizard to kill her, Elphaba, by this time significantly older and losing some of her sanity, reinterprets her journey and ultimately her presence as her own soul, long-lost, returning to destroy her. When she demands of Dorothy to know what she is there to do, if not to murder her at the Wizard's behest, they have the following exchange:

“I would say,” said the girl, straightening up, gritting her teeth, “I would say to you: Would you ever forgive me for that accident, for the death of your sister; would you ever ever forgive me, for I could never forgive myself!” The Witch shrieked, in panic, in disbelief. That even now the world should twist so, offending her once again: Elphaba, who had endured Sarima’s refusal to forgive, now begged by a gibbering child for the same mercy always denied her? How could you give such a thing out of your own hollowness?

To me, this is the language of Margarethe's relationship to Ella.

She is a woman capable of profound empathy and identification who has spent a lifetime experiencing abuse and rejection, causing her to deeply bury her own human impulses. She reinvented herself after her abusive childhood as a flourishing and competent adult, only to discover that she had built that identity on a foundation made of sand; it crumbled after the death of Francis Tremaine and the unraveling lies he had told her. Desperate not only for material safety and security, but also to maintain the life to which she was accustomed, she quickly married again, only to be rejected and isolated by her husband, Ella's father, who, as a condition of the times, had near-absolute control over her life and circumstances. (Not to say that he would exercise it, but it's a political reality regardless of his personal intent.)

Margarethe is a hollowed-out, deeply damaged human being who is confronted by an image of what she could have been herself, in another life: a whole, secure, and happy young woman who has been granted the tools, from her loving upbringing, to face hardship and suffering without losing her sense of self. Margarethe? She never had that. To be confronted by this inverted Self is deeply painful because it emphasizes Margarethe's own helpless reality. In that way, Ella really is Margarethe's "soul come scavenging for [her]," because the impulse to control and ultimately destroy Ella is so irresistible that it devours everything else in Margarethe's life. It causes the last remaining structures of safety and well-being to crumble and results in the final literalization of her isolation: her exile from the kingdom that Ella comes to rule.

I am sorry for the rant but I am sick and tired of George getting hate and ***** threats for racing.. he made a really good strategy call today, which he checked with the team btw!! what was the worst that could have happened if it didn't work, not a lot?

Also did Bono say anything to Lewis about George's request? I wonder what they would have said if he had ignored it... so much for teamwork but as long as Lewis is ok then?

I cannot believe that Mercedes has let it go on for so long. Surely they see it??

He made a strategy suggestion that’s the key to the whole ridiculousness. He asked if it was a viable option or a possible thing to try to protect the 4/5 for the team because a) he had damage and b) he didn’t know what pace Leclerc had behind him. He didn’t insist on it or beg for it. The team didn’t give him a definitive yes or no so he asked for an answer. Toto told him not to worry because they could obviously see Leclerc’s pace wasn’t going to catch them so they didn’t need to take the risk with the inverting in the wet and that was it.

Strategy is part of racing. It’s become a running joke that Mercedes’ strategy isn’t the strongest since they’ve not been winning as often, so what does it matter if a driver wants to chip in with his own suggestions. Even more so what does it matter if they’re spitballing with their engineers and it doesn’t go any further than that? If every driver was doing what George was doing it might make for some more interesting racing… it’d definitely make for more interesting viewing in full races.

And the most annoying part is it’s not even team orders. Like, calling it that is a distinct misunderstanding of what ‘team orders’ are. Charles in Brazil ‘22 was asking for team orders. Mercedes in Zandvoort ‘21 was team orders. Team orders is specifically asking one driver to stop racing for the benefit of another. Asking a driver to adapt how they race is strategy. Alonso in Hungary ‘21 was not team orders it was strategy to help Esteban..

It’s getting out of hand. The personal insults and threats are just a joke now and it’s genuinely sucking the enjoyment out of F1 recently for me. No driver should be subject to those sort of comments for doing their job and if you wouldn’t like to read it about your driver then don’t send it to another. I mean I’d get it if it was part of some all out inter teammate war like in Ferrari, but it’s literally one sided. I think 95% of the George fans I know adore Lewis too?!

It’s just such a stupid overreaction to a conversation that probably wouldn’t even get aired if it was between the two Williams drivers for example.

People act like he’s targeting Lewis somehow, but George has ALWAYS controlled the strategy of his own races. At Williams he essentially had to and it’s become part of his driving style. It’s only recently that people seem to have taken it as some kind of negative. I fail to see how it’s really harming anyone. It’s literally no one else’s issue unless it gets put into practice? People have become far too preoccupied with driver’s radios with their engineers. If you want a passive driver then support a passive driver?! He literally can’t win. Not enough personality off track, too much personality on track, either way it’s wrong for some people.

So one of my most-used Eurorack modules is a device I designed myself and fit into a 2HP panel: my attenuverting mixer. It's the little guy depicted below in both its current state and a (poor) mockup of an enhancement I'm considering making.

An attenuverter, for anyone wondering, is an attenuator that also inverts. Like a volume control, if you put a signal through while the knob is fully clockwise, all of it gets through. As you turn counterclockwise, less and less gets through until the midpoint, where nothing gets through. Then, as you keep going counterclockwise, it starts to increase again, but now it's inverted — if you displayed the signal on an oscilloscope, the highs would now be low and vice versa — with the full counterclockwise position yielding full again, but upside down, scopewise.

When nothing is plugged into the input jack, it's normalled to +5V, which means that the knob can select any voltage between -5V and +5V. This is useful directly as the control for any other CV input, but it's more broadly useful in a mixing context: the outputs of the two attenuverters and the signal at the unity input are added together and output at the Mix Output. In addition to audio mixing, control voltages sum this way. For example, the MIDI to CV adapter I have outputs the signal from the connected keyboard's pitch bend as a voltage between 0V and 10V. When connected to an oscillator, that's always increasing the frequency no matter where the rocker is, and by up to 10 octaves, which is way too much. But by patching it into one attenuverter and setting it to a swing of 0V to 2V, and setting the other to -1V, you can calibrate it to a nice, constrained octave up and down.

But the point I was making here is that because it's a skinny little module with flattened knobs (really just the pot shafts), it's difficult to tell at a glance where they're set. So I'm considering modding those by marking them as seen in the second image — painting red the flat side (the one that's upward when the pot is in its center position and the attenuation is all the way down), and etching and painting a red line across the face. (I should probably also clean up the panel area around the Unity Input jack.)

You mofos with your fanart and fanfiction awoken something dead inside me. I haven’t drawn in literal years so excuse the gross mistakes.

This is my love letter to biology.

Don’t diss my awful handwriting.

Biology

Gender is currently unknown but he has a masculine growly voice and juicy man boobs, plus he prefers he/him pronouns. Starting with the feet he has Tarantula toe padding and curly black talons which can sheathe and unsheathe much like a cat without having to use much willpower to control since they activate automatically when needed. He’s digitigrade, meaning he has inverted knees which works against gravity greatly since he’s a very large beefy boi. His calcaneus bone in his foot is of course greatly stretched to reveal actual bone sticking out of his skin, which he uses for anchoring himself onto any surface for much greater gripping surface instead of having to rely solely on just his toes. For more advanced wall crawling movement he has a 3rd toe on the side of his foot which works like an opposable thumb to properly grab onto objects for more leverage. The 3rd toe is smaller than the front two so it hides easily so it isn’t really noticeable when it isn’t in use, including the bone claw on his heel bone. As we move onto his calves he has an overgrowth of hair with the same density and mechanics as a cat whisker, the tarantula fur eventually lessens greatly as you move beyond the lower section of his feet and legs. That is the only part of his body with an abundance of his tarantula hairs, but the rest of his body hair does retains that density similar to pubic hair as the only “human” hair he has is his actual head hair. His body is a pasty white since he always has his suit on, never bothering to go outside much since he’s a biological horror. On his hands the most noticeable trait is the fact he has large talons. He has no fingernails as the set of bones on the top of his hands had created an large indentation, where the same black chitin which makes up the claws on the front toes also makes up the claws on his fingers which are attached to his bones. His finger talons requires more willpower/focus to keep them sheathed because tarantulas irl can’t just tuck them in since their always climbing and crawling around.

His black fangs are the most prominent part of his mouth which is of course made up of the same biological material of tarantula fangs albeit obviously much stronger. His canines are replaced with scythe like fangs and have a smaller set behind them, his lower jaw has medium sized fangs but only being one pair so when he closes his mouth they very neatly tuck themselves. His fangs are hollow, the upper part of his fangs has a pea sized venom sac located inside the roof of his mouth which shares the same tubing connecting to the sac. His lower jaw fangs is just a single pair so the venom sac is more smaller, the sac being dangerously close to his saliva glands so his spit tastes almost metallic like blood while also including aiding in being way more dissolving than regular human saliva which aids in his eating. The tip of his fangs are a dark red, which is actually neon under UV lighting so the coloration is a warning sign to those who have different modes of vision.

His eyes are fucked up because he’s an eldritch horror. He has horse vision so he’s supposed to view everything in 360 vision but can’t see shit behind his back due to his bloodshot eye, so naturally his body adapted to his vulnerability which is where his sensitive tarantula leg hairs come in. (It’s self explanatory he can sense the smallest of vibrations or changes in air pressure/temperature). He has organic webbing which cakes from a special small, vertical opening on the underside of his wrists. He can change the density and stickiness of his webbing so he’s even more dangerous. He’s feral so watch yo ass when he’s hungry or in a mood. Also he has invisible spider markings only revealed in UV lighting, which is the pattern below along with other add-ones.

Backstory

He was literally just some broke guy who had the best grades in his high school when it came to biology so his ass was invited to Alchemax for a specialized tour reserved for students having a dead set on science as their jobs or just really good grades in science in general. He at the wrong place at the wrong time and got bit by a new species of tarantula which was a mix of 2 other species including a jumping spider, but the spider wasn’t overly radioactive. (Since he was broke and lived in a bad part of town he was the perfect candidate for kidnapping and human testing trails of the genetic altering abilities of the tarantula for Alchemax. He spent most of his life trying to find proof of their inhumane law breaking along with criminal activity). Due to the amount of DNA and intoxication he became Spider-Man, but he was your usual spider person with mechanical webbing and sticking to any surface type shit. In his adulthood he would gain cancer due to the DNA/chemical intoxication, similar to how Spider-man would turn into a spider monster but his version was just slow suffering and death with minor bodily changes like loss of wall climbing since his cells were eating each other and dying. His canon was fighting Doc Ock to the death for managing to expose Alchemax, someone younger was supposed to be bitten to an unrefined version of the tarantula and exposed to radiation during the battle since that someone was an intern. Instead Amygdala was exposed to the massive amount of exposed radiation himself, most of his spider DNA was dormant but being introduced to a nuclear reactor amount from the Super Collider all of his tarantula DNA was turning on like Christmas lights all at once, becoming the horror he is now. He’s an anomaly because his universe used a special radiative core from Doc Ock’s successful reactor instead of the usual power sources for all Super Colliders. Because of his massive mutation of becoming a twink to an absolute beast unit of 7’1 he’s most likely the most dangerous spider person that is only tripled by his decaying mental state. (I’m sorry if I don’t seem to be taking this seriously I really did spent so much time on it because of the amount of angst and body horror I could do. I also know it’s pretty serious and I’m aware of using a terminal disease should be treated extremely carefully, but again I’m only doing it for biology purposes since I know about cellular decay/displacement in the body.) Another canon event is his boyfriend becoming a villain and being killed by Amygdala because of his carelessness. (I have this whole idea about the absolute angst of this because I love other people suffering instead of me).

Personality

He’s in constant anguish because his devolving mental state and bodily pain. That activated 60% tarantula DNA is muddling everything that makes him human. It made the good things perfect but made the bad things even worse, making his actions even more inexcusable due to his mindset and declining mental state in his high school . He has high functioning Asperges with psychopathy, making him seem devoid of empathy/social skills or any other emotion but really not all psychopaths are born murders or serial killers. He just thinks and feels differently, his depression and inattentive ADHD making him emotional numb which only makes him seem worse than he actually is. But like all autistic spectrum shits (me) he’s learned to mask and dissociate so hard he ends up in a different location with no memory of how he got there so he can be viewed as “normal” by society’s standards. He never asked to become Spider-Man and only thwipped around his city since it’s riddled with criminal activity, meaning he can’t fit in as well if everyone is too busy being mugged or murdered. He has no morals nor a code, he’s beaten anyone into comas or permanent bodily harm to keep his streets clean for way longer than any other hero in his universe. After his transformation he became incredibly reclusive and aggressive due to his body rapidly changing like a secondary puberty, but your bones are slowly stretching and cracking into place with enough pain tolerance to not die from a heart attack. Humans have a “lizard brain” but he has a tarantula one. He had a craving for flesh, completely abandoning his apartment complex and moved into an abandoned warehouse where he could set up webbing to catch animals to feed on like any other spider. Eventually his prey got bigger, and his hunger only grew in agony because his cells desperately used up all of his energy to continue transforming him into the thing he is now, and now he knows what people taste like. His venom are made up of digestive fluids and more dissolving chemicals that eat up and melt flesh together like cancer. (His biology is representative of cellular decay and multiplication of areas that don’t belong, and the constant bodily suffering aka cancer.) The longer he goes without meat the weaker and more feral he becomes, because of his cells desperation to constantly regenerate and refill his body with its materials. Without feeding even longer his cells start devouring themselves, the amount of pain makes him even more dangerous and murderous until his hunger is satiated once more where he returns to his more human mental state and goes into a spiral of self loathing for not being able to control himself. He doesn’t care who he eats because he never cared for anyone to begin with, being unfazed and knowing there’s people out their utterly below him like prey because of his god complex. (But he is aware he also has equals, it’s just no one wants to interact with him because he’s a cannibal and and anomaly). He absolutely hates himself and has zero care for his self image. He was always a monster internally and has the uncontrollable power to become even worse or a human being because his tarantula part of his brain makes his intrusive thoughts reality. (Not me dissing myself). He only eats the absolute human trash of people, not innocents no matter how feral he become, but he does occasionally chew into someone’s arm if they aggravate him enough. (He is banned from the Spider Society believe me, he was never allowed in to begin with). He knows he’s a monster and completely unforgivable, so he spends most of him time in his universe strictly inside his warehouse and never leaving the building unless he needs food. (Also in hiding because he’s a menace, absolutely CANNOT be in the Spider Society because his mere prescience gives everyone within the radius of their spider sense a head splitting migraine because of how utterly fucking dangerous and monstrously feral he can be). He’s very monotone with zero facial expressions, he has very animalistic body behavior thats very unintentional so-)

I could ramble on about JerryRigEverything being a spineless centrist who whined about people "disrespecting" Donald Trump after his midhandling of COVID-19 got millions of Americans needlessly killed, but I'll save it. I wanna point out that the first tweet is a blatant lie. As of writing this (March 2025), Tesla has only opened their Supercharger Network up to:

Ford [2 EV Models]

General Motors (Chevrolet [4], GMC [2], Buick [0], Cadillac [2])

Volvo [4] (Polestar [2])

Rivian [2]

Lucid [1*]

Mercedes-Benz [5]

Nissan [1*]

*These automakers have multiple models (past and present), but only their latest model is currently able to use the Supercharger Network.

NOTE: Also, I excluded non-passenger vehicles because (if I'm not mistaken) Tesla's Supercharger agreement with other automakers strictly prohibits commercial vehicle charging. Therefore, I didn't count vehicles like the Ford e-Transit, Rivian EDV, Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, Nissan e-NV200, etc.)

On top of that, however, Tesla uses their formerly proprietary NACS plug at their Superchargers. However (as of March 2025), the vast majority of EVs for sale right now still use the former universal standard (and more capable and independently controlled) CCS1. Therefore, in order to charge at a Tesla Supercharger you need an adapter (on top of having a compatible car). Some automakers retroactively provide 1 free per vehicle. Others charge over $200 for it. So Tesla Superchargers aren't viable for everyone.

Ford is the automaker who has had access longest. They first gained access in February 2024 (a little over 1 year ago).

Mercedes-Benz is is the automaker who gained access most recently in February 2025 (a little over 1 month ago).

So, no, burning Tesla Superchargers to the ground (in North America) does not hurt EVs in general. The vast majority of EV owners are still using native CCS1 stations like Electrify America and ChargePoint (among plenty others). Most EV owners are already accustomed to a world without Tesla Superchargers. By far the primary customer at a Tesla Supercharger are Tesla vehicles.

Also, a lot of EV owners probably don't even know they have Supercharger access since it was a retroactively provided thing. And of those that do, some may choose to not go to Superchargers. Whether it be because of the Nazi whose pockets the charging session will fill, or because the only way to charge at a Tesla Supercharger in a non-Tesla vehicle is by signing up for a Tesla account, logging in, paying, and starting the session via the Tesla app.

Also-also, the only non-Tesla vehicles that are currently on sale with an NACS Plug are... the 2025 Lucid Gravity and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

So half of the non-Tesla EVs that could charge at a Supercharger are from a manufacturer that doesn't even have access yet. (The other, is an ultra-luxury, high-price, SUV from a startup who is just now starting deliveries in 2025).

Not to mention, Superchargers are 400 Volts, and the Ioniq 5 & Gravity are vehicles with 800 Volt batteries.

So, an Electrify America station can charge them at 250 and 350 kW, restively, (which enables Hyundai's advertised 18 minute charging time).

At a Tesla Supercharger, the vehicles have to step down the voltage with an on-board inverter. As a result, the Ioniq 5 can only charge at 150 kW, and the Gravity at 250 kW.

So guess which one drivers are probably gonna favor on road trips.

Tesla Superchargers also aren't equipped to deal with non-Tesla vehicles. All Teslas have their charge port on the driver-side, rear. Other EVs have them all over the place. Because Tesla's Superchargers only accounted for their vehicles, the cables are too short to reach some vehicles, making it impossible for certain vehicles to charge at a Supercharger.

And finally: NOT ALL SUPERCHARGERS SUPPORT NON-TESLA VEHICLES

Tesla has multiple versions of Superchargers. V1 and V2 are Tesla-only. Period. They cannot speak the CCS protocol. Therefore, they don't support non-Teslas at all.

V3 Superchargers can. These are the chargers that non-Teslas can use... However, not all of them support that. In areas of high traffic volume, Tesla artificially locks out non-Tesla vehicles from using these stations.

V4 Superchargers are a planned future installation. They have longer cables and support 800V charging to address compatibility issues... However, they don't exist yet because Elon Musk fired his entire Supercharging development team after the woman in charge refused to lay off more people in her team... so boohoo.

Holding up snarky signs doesn't seem to be working.

For me, it isn't about whether this action is appropriate or not. It's about how this kind of action is inevitable.
