august '23 favs
lolita by vladimir nabokov — my fav of the month. harrowing, haunting, and so beautifully written. i feel like i could write a dissertation on this novel (which is always the mark of a good piece of art)
natural beauty by ling ling huang — we follow a young musician into an elite, beauty-obsessed world where perfection comes at a staggering cost
stung with love by sappho — a collection of a few salvaged fragments of poetry by sappho. female-oriented and beautiful <3

I know this isn't really relevant to my usual content, but I received some books I've been chasing for a while in the mail and I'm PUMPED.
The Parade's Gone By... I remember reading in my first year of film studies and have been angling for a copy for a while, there just happened to be one up for sale locally a few weeks back for an incredible price that I couldn't pass up. While there's a certain level of whimsy to this book (as it's full of firsthand accounts by those who worked on early film and Brownlow himself has a lot of love and respect for silent features), it really is a seminal text for anyone interested in silent film or early Hollywood.
From Faust to Strangelove I have had on my Goodreads wishlist for over a decade. I borrowed it from the university library at one point but could never justify spending over $100 on a physical copy for myself. Last month I found one for $40 online and decided to treat myself. I have a long-standing interest in how scientists are portrayed in popular culture, so this is one of those books that I feel so blessed to have in my hot little hands. Haynes' work is a tad dated in 2k24, but there's some great elements at play here that are truly foundational to understanding the history of the scientist in Western literature canon.
So when I'm not taking care of my cat, trust that I'll be re-reading these over the next few weeks. I can't wait! :)

really feeling like we need a 10 star system for rating books instead of 5 stars. the difference between stars is too vast for me to bridge

i also unironically think goodreads is the only platform that could at all recreate the tumblr experience. the feed is chronological the ui is actively hostile to human life and it gets updated maybe once every four years. u can blog on there.

Day 7
Niki turned off his alarm and looked at his phone, only to discover that Cinnamon and ES would be closed for the day due to the snow storm. He rubbed his eyes and glanced out the window of the bedroom and sure enough, snow was coming down in full force. Nobody would want to be out in that weather. At least he could get a few extra hours of--
His stomach started growling. Nevermind, he had to get up and make breakfast. Rinne tried to hold Niki hostage but eventually relented and fell back asleep. Rinne’s face was soft in the morning light, easily one of Niki’s favorite sights in the morning. Even if Rinne would inevitably come to ruin his day at work or gamble their money away at the pachinko parlor, he would always come back to him.
Niki indulged himself a bit and kissed Rinne’s forehead before going to make breakfast. He could do something more complicated today since he didn’t have work, and he’d probably make some of Rinne’s omurice for him. That was another thing that was cute about the older man snoring in the other room; he and his brother loved omurice and if given the chance would eat nothing but that.
Thirty minutes later and Niki was about ready to finally sit down and eat (not that he hadn’t been sneaking bites since he started) when Rinne finally dragged himself out of their bedroom. Niki greeted him and pointed to the omurice on the counter, which Rinne grabbed and sat opposite him before digging into it. His feet found Niki’s under the table and Rinne locked their ankles together.
“No work today Rinne-kun?”
“Nah, seems like ES closed everything down cuz of the storm. I’ll just have to terrorize you all day~”
Niki rolled his eyes. “Can’t wait.”
They continued to talk as they ate, the dishes starting to pile up as Rinne took what he could hold to the sink and began washing them. He was humming one of their new songs as he soaped up the sponge and started scrubbing. Niki brought the rest of the dishes to the counter and started rinsing the dishes as Rinne washed them.
The rest of the day was spent in a comfortable domesticity that Niki wished they could have forever. Without anyone else around, Rinne didn’t put up his persona and was much tolerable to be around, and it was the side of him that Niki loved the most. He loved their lazy afternoons spent on the couch in each other’s arms watching bad reality tv reruns, their silly conversations and shared kisses (not on the lips, that was something Rinne still insisted on, but everywhere else was fair game).
If only they got snowed in more often.

When you finish a book (a series) and it was so good and leaves your brain scrambled and you understood the vision even though it was sad BUT you know you’re gonna see tons of bad reviews because no one knows how to engage with media outside of shipping

It's the most wonderful time of the year by which i mean its my favorite season by WHICH i mean the My Favorite Books Of The Year youtube videos are imminent. I watch so many of those fucking things i eat them UPPPP but not without prejudice. I love a My 10 Favorite Reads or a Top 20 Books Of The Year, these are beautiful these are perfect to me. a top 5 is good too. Where I draw the line is if i see in the title, and these people always put the number in the fucking title they just cannot help themselves, that theyve read 90 books this year or 120 books or some higher even stupider number. I simply do not care what these people have to say about the books they read. I don't believe they spent enough time and energy on any one of those books to have anything meaningful to say!! 200 books in a year? that's not even reading to me anymore. I don't think.. i'm a slow reader, i'm well aware, i think read hard before picking up a new book because I know it's an investment of my time and my energy and my brain power and thoughts and feelings, i dont read that many books so i want to really CARE about the books I read. but I dont THINK this comes from a place of bitterness or jealousy. I just do not believe that someone who read 120 books in a year CARES enough about any one book that they could say anything truly meaningful about it. do you think someone who read 100 books really thought about those books?? like I have a hard time believing they were affected by those books. Don't you want to be affected?? don't you want to care?? Why don't you want to CARE???? anyway where was i. FAVORITES. I'm so excited I love hearing about people's favorite reads i'm gonna watch 100 of these its the most wonderful time of the yearrrrrr
