Hello! It's great to hear that someone else is getting into typesetting! I'm entirely self-taught (didn't even look at guides or anything, I just felt it out and it shows in my earlier work lol) but the nice thing about typesetting is that it's pretty easy to get a feel for. Honestly, Photoshop does most of the technical work; I would say a lot of typesetting has to do with art and visual aesthetics. It's your job to make things look right, and you can get really fancy with it (especially with sound effects).

I'm very slowly working on a very long PMMM doujinshi, here's a sample page of my work and what I mean about making things look "right" (in regards to text placement, cleaning bubbles, etc). My personal preference is to break up words as seldom as possible, which is a philosophy even a lot of official typesetters don't share lol (probably because a lot of typesetters value speed over little touches like that).

Anyway, Photoshop will be your best friend! I'll be honest, it's been a hot minute since I pirated my copy and I don't even think the method is valid anymore. From what I understand GenP (Windows) and AdobeZii (Mac) are the new methods of cracking Photoshop. Here are the GenP and AdobeZii subreddits for guidance. Also, if you have a Mac apparently downloading directly from Cmacked is the way to get Photoshop.

Anyway, I really can't get into all the tricks and intricacies I've learned over the years about typesetting. However, I found this AMAZING, comprehensive guide that I would strongly suggest using as a reference. They cover all of the fundamentals as well as a lot of the extras. There's even a few things in here that I wasn't aware of and will definitely be brushing up on!

I've also uploaded my font reference file to Google Docs. All the fonts show up as arial, but I've included screencaps of what they look like. These are all free fonts and can be found/downloaded if you just Google the name. Generally, Wild Words is considered the standard font in manga/doujinshi scanlations (although of course there are variants). It's what I use in all my standard text. All the rest are for sound effects, aside text, emotional text that is meant to be elevated, etc.

I would also suggest at least downloading custom heart and star shapes (or brushes) for Photoshop; there are a bunch of free ones available and those shapes tend to come up in manga speech bubbles a lot.

Oh, and make sure you make a credits page for your releases. Mine are super bare-bones (just white text on a black background for the most part) but you deserve to be credited for your labor! So does whoever translated the manga. Once you get the series up and rolling I would suggest starting to upload to Mangadex (the hub of scanlation where tens of thousands of people can see what you've made). If you need help figuring out how to do that, hit me up again when you get to that point. You'll have to create a group but it's super easy.

Am I forgetting anything else? This is such a near and dear hobby of mine and I feel like there's just so much to cover, lol. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Just canceled my Photoshop subscription after paying for it for a year. I have literally zero moral qualms about piracy (especially from a shitty company like Adobe) but Adobe kept catching me using their bullshit anti-piracy detection (which basically installs malware) no matter how many methods I used to evade them so eventually I got so tired and frustrated I finally broke down and just paid them.

I was doing some more research and apparently maybe I didn't install Photoshop correctly the first time, so I'm going to try a few more times before I give up again. Photoshop is literally an indispensable tool I use every day for my hobbies so giving it up isn't an option. Oh well, let's hope this works.

hello babe sorry it took me some time to answer bc i was trying to find the resources i could send you. pls i didnt ignore you! im sorry it took me days😔 everything is under the cut bc it’s pretty long!

1. hd videos

always always always try to find the most high quality videos you can find! it doesn’t have to be 4k, 1080 is enough. i rarely download 720p, it can make do but it won’t be as good. so try to find 1080p vids! the quality of the videos make the difference in the world!

for youtube, i just use youtube downloader lol, i think any would suffice.

for downloading movies/tv shows, you can either torrent or use direct download links. here’s a link full of websites to download movies/shows. my personal fave is snahp(.)it and i use jdownloader as well. jdownloader is a download manager, so you can download several videos in one go and just more organized i guess. also i think it can bypass the unnecessary advertisements and/or yk those websites when you click on the download button but takes you somewhere else djsnsk i hope you understand this.

also do have a strong ad block on your browser. i use ublock and adblock on chrome.

2. photoshop

i use photoshop for my gifs. you can use photopea i think but my friend has tried it and for her it didnt delivered the maximum quality you know. there’s a tutorial on how to use photopea tho somewhere on tumblr but i dont have the link sorry:( personally, i’m more comfortable with photoshop.

if you are using window, try to crack it with GenP. you could search for GenP and click on the reddit link. i used genp to crack, im very happy with it. have no trouble until now!

3. sharpening

now!!! this is important too!!! you need to sharpen your gifs but be careful to not oversharpen them!! i think i followed this tutorial but i tweaked it at the end. you could use my action here, it consists of double sharpening and a touch of gaussian blur to soften it a bit. play around with sharpening!! find the right way for you!!! i do suggest to use double sharpening, it makes the difference in the world!!

4. coloring

tbh i’m still learning to color my gifs until now. but i think the contrast and brightness play some parts too. i just notice if the gifs are wayyyyy too bright it’ll lose it’s quality, the same when it’s over saturated. so i guess find the balance!!!

5. cropping/sizing

i always crop my gifs first before i sharpen them, i even crop them before i convert them to smart filter. idk but to me it’s better that way. follow the size that tumblr allows to ensure better quality!! since the beginning i set the width to be the tumblr size e.g. 540px with this setting of cropping and the height just kinda follows it. like i calculate what the height would be if i want the aspect ratio to be 3:2 or 5:4. gosh i hope this makes sense

6. exporting

ok so i dont really understand the science behind the option but this page goes into the great details between the difference settings. i almost exclusively use selective and diffusion with 100 dither and 256bit color. as always play around!! not every gif will be suitable with that setting or if you even like that setting.

7. screencapping

i dont really know if you screencap makes the quality better, but i do know it’s just easier to screencap than uh cutting the video in photoshop- especially when you try to gif a movie! i use potplayer (idk if it’s available on mac tho?)

after you have your screenshoted scenes, load them onto photoshop like this!

and just do your usual giffing process.

i know it’s june but this is the method that worked for me back in april so shhh

first you go here and download photoshop and follow the steps.

then you need the adobe zii patcher which you can find here. just follow all the steps as they are described and it should work. if it doesn’t work, maybe check the comments on the reddit posts to see if anyone has a similar issue. or regularly check the r/adobezii subreddit to see if there are updated versions.
