Starting from Power

I find stories like The Advanced Player of the Tutorial Tower (let’s call it APTT for short) interesting to compare with other works that have OP protagonists.

The directions you can go are:

Comedy. One Punch Man, of course, stands as the exemplar. The protagonist has problems, but “enough power to crush his enemies” ain’t one.

Big Fish. There are a LOT of anime that start with their protagonist as a big fish in a small pond. We get to see some anime flexes early but then have a turn where the hero realizes his power isn’t gonna cut it. Hell, DragonBall Z runs this. Goku starts that series ridiculously powerful and then a fellow Saiyan shows up, and then a Saiyan prince, and then an emperor who killed all the other Saiyans.

Other Stories. OPM does some of this, and Overlord does it yet more. APTT itself is back and forth. It focuses more on its actual central character Hyeonu - the eponymous Advanced Player - more than OPM focuses on Saitama. We have yet to pull away from Hyeonu for a scene as long as, say, Garou vs the A-ranks.

Double Down. OPM and Overlord do this, as do The Irregular at Magic High School and honestly almost any show where the hero is a not-so-secret demon king. They just lay their five kings on the table and go, yup, we’re not playing by rules and we’re just making shit up and there’s never going to be actual challenge in this and if you want to see someone be cool this is for you and if you want to see someone overcoming things that are challenging to them you’re in the wrong place. I don’t think this is good storytelling, on its own. I do respect it, as, like, an approach. As an ethos. Challenges being overcome are what stories are made of. I think these shows, thus, aren’t so much bad stories as they are poor fits for the term “story.” It’s like asking how good a story a baseball game is. Most baseball games are quite bad from a storytelling perspective. Lots of empty space and repeated action that doesn’t really drive forward the narrative. Most of them don’t actually end in a climax so much as they just...end. One of the main reasons we remember ball games that are narratively interesting is because they’re so damn rare. (also because they’re narratively interesting, of course)

But if you stop judging the work by how well it fits the term “story” a baseball game is fine. Each pitch is a tense exchange, complex in execution but also totally comprehensible to the viewer. I feel like that same logic can be applied to stories with OP protagonists. It’s not “just turn your brain off and you can enjoy it,” as gets bandied about too much. The proper discussion is more like, “stop thinking about it as a story.”

Anyway. If you DO continue treating your narrative with an OP lead as a story, you end up having to work out how you’ll cope with that. There are a bunch of approaches, and I think what interested me with APTT is that it feels like the writer started from an interest in following OPM’s comedy direction and then got five or six chapters in and recognized their own story didn’t have a way to remain funny with that premise for as long as they wanted to keep the comic going, so they transitioned toward a Big Fish direction. It’s been especially interesting to see them shift the style of jokes, with the expansion away from just “they thought he wouldn’t be OP and then he was!” as the whole routine arguably making the humor better on average now that it’s not fundamentally a humor comic.

It’s time for the ‘5 Best Must-Read Webtoon’ after my last article about the top 5 Isekai Anime that will be coming in 2024. This time I am writing a similar article, but about webtoon/manhwa instead. And God knows how many times I had to bother my editor to let me write this. Because there are so many good webtoons I want to suggest. The best part, many of the K-Dramas that you are seeing were adapted from Webtoon. Even the most popular one, Omniscient Reader couldn’t help but get an adaptation.

I love how American action Graphic Novels (Comics) are like:

OMG big green dude! Look it's it's a rich white furry here to save the day! Look this alien who conveniently is also a normal dude except the sun gives him the ability to jump rlly high and lift really heavy things (but we're gonna make him fly later on and give him some laser vision, oh yeah did I mention he was a rich dude?). Oh look the people that just casually mutated one way or another and they're here to save the day!

Lol the worlds ending, everyone's dying, did I mention there's a tower of multiple different worlds? Oh yeah also the stars are big mad and love watching humans die. Btw your physical attributes have been put into a video game system so now you have a numerical representation of just how shitty you are, but don't worry no one else has the ability to get stronger like you do because you played/read/whatever this game/novel/LN/Manhwa/webtoon despite it's inherently sadistic flaws and know everything about it despite everyone else deciding it was garbage. Congrats your "unique" tastes lead you to becoming the protag. Also you're the only one able to combine and steal skills from other players and you'll end up fighting a demon lord and literal. Fucking. Gods to save humanity from complete and utter extinction. Good luck! lololololol

The fun thing about Jiwoo is that he's an absolute cinnamon roll. He has a tendency to win almost every antagonist over by being an absolute sweetheart. He looks after stray cats, rescues people from danger without hesitation, and pays little mind to all the arbitrary politics of other 'awakened ones'. However he's ALSO always down to fight and will challenge powerful fighters just for fun. He's both adorable and unhinged and I love him.

The Mirror Match

The Advanced Player of the Tutorial Tower (APTT) has reached a trope that shows up with a lot of powerful characters, particularly if they’re cocky.

A favorite line on the topic comes from Minmax in the comic Goblins! where he says, “Oh god, it’s the one guy who’s butt I’m not sure I can kick!”

To some extent that sums it up, right? The reason behind your Negaducks and other shadow selves is sometimes to delve into a “there but for the grace go I” scenario, but also it’s kind of a chance for the series to delve into or reveal its core philosophy.

If it’s a true Shadow Self instead of just a pure copy, it often wins at first. The lesson expressed is that from a logistical standpoint evil, cruelty, and violence can be powerful but burn through their resources too fast. The support of friends, belief in something greater than oneself, or desire to protect, meanwhile, can be slower to come to full power but reaches a greater height.

It’s honestly hard to tell how much writers want to express these ideas as philosophies, because there’s a natural tendency to write the scene this way anyway, because having the hero lose a bit at first and then have a come-from-behind win is good storytelling.

Another benefit, back to what Minmax said, is that it neatly gets around the typical issue of the OP Protagonist; That is, the “being OP” part. The reason I said it can reveal the underlying philosophy is that it removes a lot of the more mundane comparison-points, math-style, by putting them on both sides of the equation so you can zero them out. Your hero can punch for 22.3 mountains worth of damage? The same is true of the mirror. He can access Lightning Force? Also true of the mirror. You have to then work out what makes the hero a winner independent of those physical attributes. If you don’t have an answer yet, this may be a case where the shadow wins the scene, and your hero has to back off, lick his wounds, and learn something better. 

I’ve talked about a few ways copycat characters can go awry before, when I watched the Copycat Ken episode of Ranma 1/2, but you definitely have to be careful about weird edge cases to avoid making some kind of on-the-spot rule for a neat individual scene that then spreads like ink to ruin your whole worldbuilding tapestry. There was a filler episode in Naruto where the villains made perfect copies of some of the heroes who could use all their moves. After a bunch of nothing back-and-forths with bad animation (it was a filler episode, after all) the conclusion was the heroes won because they could learn and get more skilled over time, and the copies couldn’t. As an idea this is actually pretty cool. The problems are a) This was merely told to us. The movements don’t reflect the idea that the heroes have gotten better at anything; We don’t have a sense that their movements are more considered, or their blows any sharper. b) Almost all of the heroes copied had moves they could use to burn themselves out for temporary extra power. There isn’t a sense that the copies had agency or a strong desire to survive after killing their originals. So why wouldn’t Evil Rock Lee immediately use the gates to power up and either win or force Good Rock Lee to use the same self-damaging power just to keep up? c) It was far less interesting to have the mirror copies split up and fight their own originals only. The team was supposed to be a team, so why didn’t they fight as a team? Given the horrible animation, this answer at least is clear: It would have been harder to animate, and they didn’t have budget for that during this episode.

But yeah. By removing the idea of one side or the other winning because they can punch through walls or whatever, the mirror match trope gives the writer a chance to essentially have one side win on philosophical grounds. They won because they’re always improving themselves. They won because they have friends who can cover for their own weaknesses. They won because they actually have something to fight for. They won because of some immutable qualtiy about who they are that can’t be copied and have the copy remain antagonistic. There’s all kinds of neat ways to go with it.

this Week it’s Time for my In-store Release Event！！〜My Album has Finally Released〜

To celebrate the release of my album, I got to write a lyric essay for Uta Net. This was my first attempt at writing such an essay, I took on the challenge by reading many essays in advance😲!! II honestly had no idea what to do, I kept worrying until the very end😂 The recital was a lot of fun 😳Actually, I came across something very interesting called a “sound shield” at Yuji Toriyama-san’s studio where I did most of my vocal recording for the album. I was so intrigued by the item that I bought a mini size. These sound shields or microphone isolation shields are crucial because they provide a better environment for the microphone to produce good sound quality. They pick up reverberations that occur when voices or musical instruments echo in a room. Typically, I use a handheld mic when I practice but I record all my demo songs with a mic on a mic stand at home so I knew that investing in a shield like that would increase the quality of my recordings considerably! I took the plunge and bought one. When I recorded my reading of the essay using this filter, the audio was recorded very well 😳I think it sounded great because it delicately picked up my breathing! It felt like I was almost in a professional radio recording environment 😳However, it's quite a hassle to set up the filter on the mic stand so I've removed the filter at home but here’s a picture of Toriyama-san's studio! *laughs* (of course I have his permission to post this😉) It's a great way to easily improve the quality of your recording environment!

Only 2 days left until the Shibuya in-store event 🥳🎉 These days I am finally starting to realise that my album has actually released. From last year to this year, I was busy creating the album, facing each and every song carefully. I’d like to look back on some of the fun photos which were taken during the album recording 🤭 Here we have a group photo of Konno Strings during the recording of "Asu wo Yume Mite Utau"🎻 Seeing Takebe-san in the booth giving instructions to the string players almost felt like we were on the set of a TV program. On the one hand it felt quite hectic but on the other hand, there was an overwhelming sense of reassurance that the production was in capable hands 😳✨It was a really amazing recording😍 (Source)

“Sono Saki e” Oricon Ranking

As mentioned in another blog post, “Sono Saki e” made it to #14 on its first day in the Daily Oricon Charts. That’s honestly a lower entry-position than expected but not too shabby (in comparison, Keiko managed to reach #8 on the first day).

However, Wakana is still in the Top 30 for the Weekly Oricon Charts which is actually pretty neat. Not as high as her 1st (#19) or 2nd (#22) original studio album but much better than her cover album (#42) => Oricon
