I genuinely think that if they were going to bring back any psych villian, Lindsay Leikin would pose the biggest threat. She knows Shawn isn’t psychic, she has adequate motivation to target him personally, and has the skills to prove he’s a fraud and do it slyly as she is also highly skilled in deductive reasoning (she did manage to get them to the counterfeiter to begin with so she has legitimate talent). She could even orchestrate it from prison. Maybe her parole was denied again so, like, what else is she going to do? Plus, she’s kind of nuts. Faking being a psychic with the FBI is a whole other level of bold compared to a local precinct, then she met a counterfeiter and was like yes please, more crime, then killed him when he tried to run, slept with Shawn that same night, then tried to take him hostage when she got caught. Its just a shame she wasn’t a bit more charismatic or eccentric. They had her play it as a very normal girl swept into a life of crime because of a guy (probably because she was a “love interest” for Shawn) when the receipts show she was an absolute lunatic (look at her face after they found the guy she killed. This bitch is smiling).

Also, she just kinda gave up when she was caught. I wish she’d have been screaming “he’s a fraud!” as she was taken to the car or even had a heart to heart moment with Lou Diamond Phillips because she did betray him after all. Idk, i just wanted more. (But i think maybe the writers recognized this and thats how we get Declan later??)

Gus is basically siri at this point. Between the archeology, safes, online poker, the law, tennis players, space, comic books, of course pharmaceuticals, and now studies tender from all over the world- its a smaller list of what Gus doesn’t know. Gus clearly likes learning. I’m surprised he never thought of becoming a teacher or college professor, to try to pass that love of learning to the next generation. Though i guess we see he’s not that great with people surprisingly, considering he’s a successful salesman. (OH MY GOD WHAT IF THIS WHOLE TIME GUS ACTUALLY HAD LIVED UP TO HIS POTENTIAL AND BECAME AN INTERNATIONAL SPY. He knows all these things because of his job, psychs only been able to stay open because Gus can fund it from his spy job, joining psych was a good front but he was also lonely from never getting to be himself. I kid, i kid, but its a fun idea for me haha)

I can’t tell if its because Henry is actually concerned for Shawns safety like he said he wasn’t in the previous episode, or if he’s still taking it personally that Shawns using the gifts he “gave” him to be psychic. Probably both. We know he was really bothered by his motorcycle accident, so i wonder if he’s been kind of spiraling, and adding up all the crazy situations he’s been in. (Which, i don’t think Shawn tells him about. i think Gus calls him like a weekly report haha) I think the fact that shawns cases are becoming more dangerous he suddenly doesn’t like the idea of him being a detective, well a detective this way at least, because i think in his mind he’d be safer if he was an actual cop where he had a partner with a gun, and back up, and rules, and training. I mean we know he wouldn’t be, (look at what happens to Lassie and Juliet)

Alright second time doing a First Impressions post! This time it’s for Variable Barricade. I’m not sure of any content warnings at the moment, so please look them up to be safe! There will be spoilers for this post as these are my unfiltered yet censored first reactions and thoughts! These posts are also a little all over the place, please keep that in mind while reading.

I started playing this game on February 15, 2024. For this post, I stopped after the interviews were conducted. I’ll be marking my most anticipated and least anticipated with ✨ and 💥 respectively!

General Thoughts

I am surprised we have a MC who has voice acting! It’ll be a change for me to get used to but I’m not opposed whatsoever! Less energy for my brain to make a voice for her. Currently, I think Hibari is a little bit of a spoiled princess, but let’s see if that changes. Ok after playing some more, I really like how Hibari already feels like her own character and not a semi-blank canvas for projecting so far. Those titles tend to be more of my favorites instead of the ones with blander MCs. This board game approach is very interesting, I am a little worried about missing events though.

Nayuta Yagami

He’s so energetic! I’m honestly the most ok with Nayuta before the introductions, but we will see as the common route progresses! Nayuta 🤝 Me: exercising to bubblegum pop. I’m also concerned that he would eat a tennis ball if offered. The poor guy is way too gullible. He’s like a puppy. He’s easily the most entertaining to me. He’s also very odd. He definitely gets carried away with his antics, which gets him in some awkward yet funny situations already.

Oh no here we go again…for those who don’t know (which would be most of you), my favs in media tend to be the mixed race characters. Maybe it’s because I’m mixed race myself. Honestly he’s not as passive as I thought he’d be, I was expecting him to be more like Paschalia right away. He’s more odd than I expected, which, if you’ve noticed a pattern in my favs they tend to be oddballs. Admittedly, usually with trauma in there, but oddballs nonetheless.

Oh boy this one…he’s an oddball and will probably end up being in my top fav characters by the end of the game. I tend to like most characters Nobuhiko Okamoto voices, so we’ll see. I’m not really a fan of his little quirk of calling Hibari “babe” this early on though. I love how he simply doesn’t care about optics and does whatever he wants. It’s funny to me. He still rubs me the wrong way and is also a bit annoying, but not as bad as Ichiya.

Why…why is he 26. I just realized Hibari is still in high school. Unless she’s a senior, I’m kinda meh but iffy on the age gap between the other character and Hibari but this…this is a bit much. He annoys me the most rn admittedly. The fact he has alleged marriage fraud on his record is not helping the situation. After the interviews, all I can say is he’s very annoying to me and I agree with Hibari that he gives me a headache.

I have been going on a shoe journey, yall.

Over 20 years ago in my high school days, I went to a proper shoe store and they measured and fitted me for shoes and they said I had a size 13 foot. That shoe size had been working out for me decently for most of my adult life. I figured that was the size of my foot.

It was not.

Recently, I have been having trouble tying my shoes. I can't bend over to tie them due to age and belly protrusion factors. But I have also lost flexibility when crossing my legs, probably due to the same factors, and it has been hard to get an angle to do my bunny ears knot. I also can't clip my toenails without very painfully yanking my feet closer, but that is another issue for another day.

To solve my shoe-tying woes, I decided to get myself shoes of the non-laced variety.

I liked my slippers, but they were not robust enough for outdoor use. I hate flip flops and sandals. Crocs? Also, no. Velcro was considered. Ultimately I decided to try a slip on tennis shoe.

I found a pair that were stylish, robust, and comfortable. The pair seen above.

But there was a problem.

The first pair I ordered were 13s.

They were way too big.

It would seem that high school measurement I have been relying on for 2 decades was inaccurate.

So I returned those and got the 12s you see in the picture. At first, I thought those fit okay. They worked well for going to get the mail and such. But when I started taking my dad to dialysis 3 times per week and pushing his wheelchair in and out of the facility, I started having issues with the fit.

My footsies were not feeting properly into the slip on shoes.

Without laces to secure my feet, the shoes were behaving more like flip flops. But without that bit between the toes to keep them on, they were turning into fly flops.

Several times when I used my feet to activate the brake on my dad's wheelchair, the shoes would fly off my feet.

When I looked at the fit, I noticed that my heel and the heel of the size 12s were not close to each other. You can see the sizeable gap in the photo.

Clearly, I didn't know what the hell size my feet were.

I was going to get scientific about this.

So... I bought this thing.

It promptly arrived a few days later and when I measured my feet I was shocked to discover that my feet were not size 13.

THEY WERE TEN AND A HALF!!

That took the wind out of my sails. For years people have always been so impressed when I told them I was a size 13. They'd say things like, "Wow, you have big feet!" and "Dang, son!" and "Why are you randomly telling me your shoe size?" Sometimes people would even make a joke about an absurd urban myth that has no evidence to support it.

I felt like a foot fraud.

In any case, I took this new information and ordered my THIRD pair of slip on shoes.

Size.......... 10½.

When they arrived I plopped them on the floor and started to shove my newly diminutive feet into them.

They did not fit. They did not fit at all. I could barely get my toes inside the shoes.

I was confused.

So I took another look at the foot measuring device I had purchased.

I thought the measurement was taken from the long white bar that presses up against my big toe. But do you see those little arrow bits above that? THAT is what points to the foot measurement.

I measured my feet completely wrong!

UGH.

I took a new measurement using the device properly this time.

11½!

Not quite 13, but it made me feel a little better to regain a shoe size. And it made sense because the 12s were too big, but the 10½s were way too small. I was closing in on properly fitting shoes.

I ordered my 4th pair of slip on shoes, desperately hoping I could finally stop buying shoes after this.

Alas, they did not fit.

The length seemed right, but the shoe felt like it was strangling my foot to death. I had to use a ton of force to extricate my foot from these supposed "slip on" shoes.

Then I remembered when ordering shoe after shoe that every shoe size had a "wide" option.

Ephiphany struck.

I finally realized why they gave me 13s in high school.

I have girthy feet.

When you are lacing them up, a longer shoe still fits reasonably well. I'm guessing they didn't have wide shoes available back in that store all those years ago. So, they just gave me a bigger size to accommodate my wide-ass feet.

It was time to try shoe order number 5.

Gimme that girthy goodness.

They arrived today.

That had been Fossil’s genius idea once all the snakes had slithered away after some intern left their cage open, much to Mrs Gideon’s outrage. “People think we’re frauds or something, I dunno. Anyway, I think I know how we can get some people coming back!”

“And how do you propose we do that?” Howard amused, quite interested in hearing what idiotic idea his boss had now.

For Vince, it was just the threat of having to walk all the way to Fossil’s office just to hear him ramble about some nonsense, which he really didn’t want to do. But for Howard, it was the threat of Fossil following through on his plan from the day before.

Vince couldn’t know what Fossil wanted. Vince cared too much about the Zoo and the animals that if he found out it was in risk of closing he would agree to do anything to save it without completely realizing the consequences of what he would be agreeing to. He was both too pure hearted and simple minded to fathom what he would be getting himself into.

With a wide-eyed cautious glance to Vince, who was staring at him with wide desperate eyes in return, silently pleading with Howard to not make him go to Fossil, Howard relented, making the long and torturous trek back to Fossil’s office and preparing himself to turn down this ridiculous idea once more.

When he arrived at the office, he was expecting Fossil to be at his desk as usual, completely oblivious to his arrival despite having demanding him. However, what he wasn’t expecting, was Dixon Bainbridge.

Closing the door behind him carefully, he swallowed a lump in his throat. Bainbridge never bothered with Zoo business. He was just here to get the cash it made and leave everything up to Fossil, who in turn left everything up to Howard. “Uh, Mr. Bainbridge, sir.” He greeted politely, eyes darting to Fossil to get a gauge of what was going on. “You called for me?”

“Oh, did I?” He questioned, eyes narrowing in thought before he glanced up at Bainbridge who was standing just behind him. “Why did I call him in again?”

Bainbridge rolled his eyes. Something that seemed to be a trend for anyone who was stuck in a conversation with Bob Fossil. “Because I told you to, now scram.” His bellowing voice echoed throughout the room, snapping at the other man seated before him in an authoritative manner, and Howard watched as the Fossil scrambled instantly, running out the room and out the back door, leaving Howard alone with the mustached man before him. “Moon, we’ve only met briefly but I trust you to be a smart, intelligent, man.” He carried on, walking forward so he was now standing in between the desk and the chair Fossil had just occupied.

“Ah, yes, of course, sir. Thank you.” Howard responded, flattered, but still suspicious.

“So I hope I’m not wrong in assuming you’ll be able to make the correct decision here.” Bainbridge carried on casually, leaning back and sitting himself down in the chair as he stared up at Howard who patiently waited for him to continue. “The Zoo is running out of money, and until we are able to sweep this whole ‘gummy snake’ mess under the rug, we need to come up with another way to keep it open. I would hate to see my employee’s lose their jobs.” His fake concern seeping through on his words that Howard knew was absolute bullocks.

Howard thinned his lips together, trying hard to bite his tongue and hold back the words he so desperately wanted to say. It was one thing to snap at Fossil and turn him down, it was another to do it to Bainbridge, someone who was very clearly much more intelligent and could quite easily dispose of Howard from the Zoo altogether; then who would be here to take care of Vince?

“Sir, with all due respect, you can’t force Vince to do what you’re suggesting. It’s not right. You’ll be asking him to stand in a cage and be stared at like some common ape! It’s completely humiliating and dehumanizing!” A small part of him hoped that maybe Bainbridge could see reason in the madness and come to his senses, maybe he wasn’t as cold and heartless as the rumors said.

Dixon just stared back at him blankly and unamused. “Well, he either stands there like a good boy and does what he’s told, or I’ll fire him.” He said plain and simple. No questions asked.

Howard opened his mouth to fight back, explain that he couldn’t fire Vince with no grounds to stand on, but even he knew it was a waste of breath. Dixon Bainbridge could do whatever he wanted. Neither Vince nor Howard had the funds to take the matter to court, and Naboo wouldn’t risk his place on the Shaman Council for 2 people he barely knew. All too quickly, Howard’s mouth shut closed again as his brain moved a hundred miles an hour to come up with a solution.

“I’ll do it.” Howard said before he had a chance to register what was coming out of his mouth. “I’ll do it.” He repeated for good measure, and to also solidify to himself on what exactly he’d just said.

Bainbridge let out a deep, bellowing chuckle as he threw his head back, his chest bouncing with every vibration and exhale. “You!? You think people would want to pay to see you? You’re about as boring as this chair I’m sitting on, and this chair is even more exciting to look at than you!”

Howard’s brain was racing. He was onto something here, he’s sure he was. He just had to figure out what it was that he was onto.. “I’m serious! I might not be as pretty as Vince but I- we could-“

Howard let himself think as best he could with his heart pounding in his ears, and the looming threat of Vince’s wellbeing on his shoulders. They don’t have to know it’s not 100% real…” He was rambling by this point, he knew that, but he needed Bainbridge to agree with him. He needed it.

Dixon stared back at him, eyes narrowing like he was actually contemplating it. “I’d be scamming the rich to make myself even richer… interesting.”

“Yes!” He was nearly ready to cry with relief at the small indication that Bainbridge was about to go along with. “Please, let me. I’ll do it..”

Dixon paused, once more leaning back in his chair as his eyes never left Howard. “You’d be willing to do this for the Zoo?” He questioned, something in him telling him that there was more to it than just the Zoo, which Howard gladly clarified without question.

charlotte and caleb ( fcs: nana / after school and jeonghan / svt ): cousins to taemin and yumin. charlotte is on tense terms with taemin, and caleb is a bit of a ditz and isn’t on tense terms with anyone. charlotte is an uprising direction that focuses on vagueness, beauty, femininity, and monstrosity ( brief desc ). caleb works as a match maker, using specific methods and practices that have helped many people. also has others working as socializers and counselors and customer reference in his building. charlotte and caleb are very close, and they speak often ( because caleb always wants to talk and he’s the ‘baby’ so she lets him ). they have enough of a relationship with their parents to have dinners every 3 months with them.

zen and jei ( fc: yanjun / 9 percent and huang zitao ): both are close friends ( along with bonnie who is in the selective list ). they all came to korea together from america and are always busy with work, whether it’s their model work or any other scheduling they have. zen is the dad, older brother of the 3, and jei is the spoiled brat. jei always tries to get people to buy food for him.

seong and theodore ( fcs: jae / day6 and wonpil / day6 ): both are childhood best friends who moved from america. seong is a trust fund prodigy genius that is working as a certified doctor at the age of 25, now 26. theo’s a church boy that goes to church and reads his bible :( he’s a tattoo artist, and he has a shit ton of tattoes on his arms and body in general. generally restricted to his mid section to chest, front and back, and his arms. he also has very fragile health as his immune system is not well. he stays with seong because his parents don’t trust him to be by himself with his health. and he doesn’t mind since seong IS his best friend. they live in a 4 bedroom house. theo gets looks when he wears his arms out and he isn’t self conscious about it, but there are times where people will comment along the lines of ‘your arms look like that and you're the son of a pastor????’ these comments make him uncomfortable. very strong in his faith.

meiqi, manchu, yuma, jaemin, elliot, and daisy ( fcs: elkie / clc, xiao gui / 9 percent, renjun / nct, mark / nct, mina / gugudan ): fraud squad. forgery. cover ups. faked accidents. general underground work you need done? they got it. manchu’s the boss man, meiqi’s the second hand. they all have a family like connection, but they do keep each other at arm’s length.

bones and hyde ( fcs: jungwoo / nct and lucas / nct ): boss man and right hand man of boss man of monarch mafia, which he stole from his biological father. brothers. they both work in hyde’s restaurant, but they are involved in the crime life. faceless leader of monarch mafia, no one knows what he looks like. hyde is basically his guard dog, and he does a lot of his dirty work.

jane ( fc: ren / nuest ):  member of monarch mafia. unashamed pretty boy with anger issues. don’t make him mad pls!! brute strength of monarch mafia. does a lot with issues that are or could get physical. no patience.

dakota and seongja ( fc: bang yongguk and kaeun / pledis ): tattoo artists and work with theodore. softies. all of them, esp theo. dakota also has a crappy immune system and gets sick easily as well as his health being very fragile at times. seongja is a fallen guardian angel / ‘fallen star’ and she keeps track of her person’s life while trying to curve their misfortune into something good. seongja and dakota are best friends.

taeri and taeun ( fcs: jiu / dreamcatcher ): blind twins. their parents are wealthy, but they never give their daughters much attention. they were raised by their grandparents basically. taeri used to stop other people from bullying taeun and does make rash decisions out of her anger. does a special program that will allow her to work as a teacher to those with disabling visual impairment. workaholic. taeun works as a library aide, and she also reads and teaches braille to the children that come for the lessons. she’s also very sof. they live together, but they constantly have aides visiting them to help.

eunja ( fc: jimin / aoa ): works as an online news author, working through an other website / company as well as her own blog. she travels a lot as well. though, currently she’s working and helping at an orphanage her friend and friend’s mother is bringing back. she balances this and other work. basically a puppy? always hyperactive and has energy to spare. very open about her opinions, but she doesn’t like to dissatisfy other people. also a witch that has an affinity for time and relativity, space and matter, etc.

Garden Island

Garden Island

Garden Island, located in Sydney Harbour to the east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay, has been associated with the defence of Sydney and eventually Australia, since the first fleet of convicts arrived in 1788. Garden Island boasts what is claimed to be Australia’s first lawn tennis court. Built in 1880, it is still in use, although the lawn was replaced in 1960. But possibly its best kept secret is its spectacular 360 degree view of Sydney from the top of the old signal station. Once used to flag messages to ships, it boasts views of the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Fort Denison, and the city skyline.

Public Access: Access to Garden Island is restricted, due to it being a military base. There is a Public Access Area on the northern end of Garden Island. The Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre is located within it. The Centre consists is housed in two heritage-listed buildings: The Gun Mounting Workshop (1922) and the Boatshed (1890). The Public Access Area has a number of relics from Garden Island’s past including the initials of the three First Fleeters carved into a sandstone rock. The Public Access Area also includes fortifications from the colonial period, the first grass tennis court in Australia (not for public use), the First Fleet initials (see below), a heritage rose garden, 150 year old trees, grass verges, and picnic tables and seating.

A unique relic of the First Fleet is a series of initials carved into an outcrop of sandstone on Garden Island. The three sets of initials – “FM”, “IR” and “WB” – each dated 1788, are located near the tennis courts within the Garden Island Naval Base at the Harbour end of the island. Mystery surrounds the initials as there is no written record of their existence yet there is no reason to believe that they anything but genuine. Historians who have researched their identity believe they belong to First Fleeters Frederick Meredith, Captain’s steward of transport ship Scarborough; marine private Joseph Redford of HMS Sirius and William Bradley, first lieutenant of HMS Sirius, who was a cartographer.

All three men were crew members of HMS Sirius during the winter months of 1788 at a time when Sirius was anchored off Garden Island when the ship’s crew had planted a garden there to grow vegetables for their tables. Bradley led the group that went ashore to establish the gadren. It is likely Meredith and Redford were among that group – did they carve their initials on the island then?

The men had also all been members of exploration parties in the Sydney region in that year and is anotherlink between them, it provides a logical reason why they may have believed it necessary to carve their initials here. The carvings could well be location markers used in much the same way as trig points are today, a pactice not uncommon in those times. Being located at the Sirius land base, they would have marked the start and finish points of their expeditions or surveys, the initials themselves serving to identify who led or took part in the survey. If this was their function, there could well be another set or sets of initials somewhere else around the harbour to which this location was cross referenced still waiting to be discovered.

Meredith was on the HMS Sirius when it sailed from Sydney in October 1788 for the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa in search of food for the starving colony. They returned to Sydney in May 1789. Meredith would later sail on the Sirius to Norfolk Island, where it was shipwrecked. After returning to England with Captain John Hunter who faces court-martial, for the loss of HMS Sirius, Merdith came back to Australia in 1793, when he became one of the first free settlers and was granted land at Strathfield and Liverpool. He went on to become Liverpool’s first police officer and postmaster. His descendants include the Packer media family.

Little is known about Joseph Redford and what became of him. William Bradley conducted numerous surveys of the Sydney region in the early days of the colony. His later career was overshadowed by his steadily deteriorating mental state. Although a successful small ship commander, Bradley became increasingly erratic and was eventually retired as a result. A few years later, suffering serious mental problems, Bradley committed a highly unusual case of postal fraud and was ultimately exiled. He never returned to Britain but lived in quiet disgrace in France until his death in March 1833, age 75.

Note: Tour guides tell visitors that one of the initials is JM and not FM. If they are JM, they would be the initials of Marine Officer Lieutenant James Meredith, who sailed with the First Fleet on the convict ship, Friendship. We believe the initials are FM, and not JM as we inspected them many years ago when they were protected from the elements and we read them as being “FM”.

Colonial Fortifications

A small gun pit had been built on the hummocks of Garden Island by the First Fleeters, but it had soon become overgrown and quickly fell into disrepair. It was removed in 1811 when Gov. Macquarie declared Garden Island a civilian establishment and determined to transfer what remained of the Garden Island fort to a new fort on Bennelong Point. Another event which occurred in the aftermath of the visit of the squadron of US Navy ships in November 1839 was the return of Garden Island to its former state as restricted military land. In 1856 the island was set aside for use by the Royal Navy as a base.

Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre

The Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre is the maritime museum of the Royal Australian Navy. The centre opened on 4 October 2005 and is located within the Public Access Area on the northern end of Garden Island Naval base. The Centre is housed in two heritage-listed buildings: The Gun Mounting Workshop (1922) and the Boatshed (1890). The conning tower of the Japanese Midget Submarine, which was involved in an attack on the Garden Island Naval Base during World War II is preserved and on display along with the documentary video of the attack. The RAN Heritage Centre is open from 9:30am to 3:30pm daily except for Australia Day, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day.

Bus tour groups that visit the RAN Heritage Centre are permitted to transit Garden Island Dockyard in their own bus. There is no bus transport provided by Navy. In collaboration with Sydney Ferries Corporation, pedestrian visitors to the RAN Heritage Centre arrive by Sydney Ferry using the Circular Quay to Watson’s Bay route. The ferries will stop at the Garden Island Wharf during RAN Heritage Centre opening hours only. All pedestrian visitors are to depart the Public Access Precinct by the last ferry each day. Due to security requirements there is no pedestrian access or private vehicle access to or from the RAN Heritage Centre via HMAS Kuttabul Garden Island Dockyard. Website

Garden Island Naval Base

Up until the arrival of Lachlan Macquarie as the colony’s new Governor in 1810, Garden Island’s role changed. Macquarie abandoned the island’s farm and then the fort a year later when he built Fort Macquarie on Bennelong Point. From 1810 Garden Island was used essentially as a picnic area for the residents of Sydney until 1856 when it was set aside for use by the Royal Navy as a base. Since that time, the base has grown in a ramshackle manner with the addition of a plethora of new buildings and facilities over the course of the next century. It is connected to the mainland by the Captain Cook Graving Dock. Today it remains a restricted area and houses the Fleet Base of the Royal Australian Navy and the Garden Island Dockyard.

In 1904, after the proclamation of the Commonwealth Defence Act, it became Australia’s principal naval base and functioned well in this capacity throughout the Great War. On 10 July 1911 the tittle Royal Australian Navy was granted by King George V to the Naval Forces of the Commonwealth of Australia. On 1 July 1913 all naval establishments in the Australia Station were handed over by the Admiralty to the RAN. These facilities included Garden Island and the buildings that had been erected by the Government of NSW in the years before federation.

1922 saw the beginning of a wrangle between the State and Commonwealth Governments over who owned Garden Island. The matter went back and forth through various courts of appeal, with judgment going back in forth in favour of one and then the other before the Commonwealth Government went as high as it could go – to the Privy Council in London – which, in February 1929, ruled that the NSW Government had right of ownership to Garden Island. After World War II the State Government sold the island outright to the Commonwealth Government.

They contained a power station, offices, air raid shelters and a command centre. Some of the tunnels under the Garden Island Naval Depot were built to be able move guns from one side of the island to the other and to transport ammunition. Under and around the Captain Cook Dock there are tunnels associated with the dock itself. There is also a pit (now sealed) that was built in the 1800 2s dug as a store for provisions should the island ever come under siege.

As a result of concern over the increased Japanese naval activity in the waters off Australia, a decision was made to greatly improve facilities at Garden Island. In May 1940, the facility was selected as the most suitable location in Australian waters for a dry dock. The building of the Captain Cook Graving Dock became the biggest engineering task in Australia’s history up until that time. It is approximately 345 m long, 45 m wide and 14 m deep. It has a capacity of 259,122,000 litres of water which can be removed or replaced in about four hours. Working around the clock, a team of 4,000 men moved 55 kms of sheet piling and 800,000 cubic metres of stone and core filling to build the giant coffer dam which reclaimed 14 hectares of sea bed. Over 1 million tonnes of concrete was poured in the construction of the giant dock which connected Potts Point to Garden Island, making it no longer and island.

Opened by the Duke of Gloucester on 12 March 1945, the dock was many times larger than the Sutherland Dock on Garden Island and with two compartments independent of each other, can house a fleet carrier and two destroyers simultaneously. Even today it is still large enough to house the biggest ships in the world.

A little known fact is that the landfill used to bridge the island to the point was all excavated from Kings Cross. To coincide with the dock work the city council and Department of Roads excavated the Kings Cross tunnel. William and Bayswater road were already choking with drays, trams, bicycles and motor vehicles and the tunnel was the obvious solution. It was also intended to be used as the main local air raid shelter if we were to be attacked. One can imagine the lorries travelling back and forth along Macleay street laden with landfill.

Potts Point eventually lost 10 acres of land in the resumption program – and some of Sydney s most spectacular grand homes including Caleb Castle (which became Grantham), Crecy, Charlemount and Clarens, but above all we lost our northern parkland and view.

World War II Attack

In late May and early June 1942, during World War II, submarines belonging to the Imperial Japanese Navy made a series of attacks on the cities of Sydney and Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. On the night of 31 May 1 June, three Ko-hyoteki-class midget submarines, each with a two-member crew, entered Sydney Harbour, avoided the partially constructed Sydney Harbour anti-submarine boom net, and attempted to sink Allied warships. Two of the midget submarines were detected and attacked before they could successfully engage any Allied vessels, and the crews scuttled their boats and committed suicide. These submarines were later recovered by the Allies. The third submarine attempted to torpedo the heavy cruiser USS Chicago, but instead sank the converted ferry HMAS Kuttabul, killing 21 sailors. This midget submarine’s fate was unknown until 2006, when amateur scuba divers discovered the wreck off Sydney’s northern beaches. More

The Garden Island Precinct is historically highly significant. It is associated with the earliest days of British settlement in Australia and provided a sorely needed fresh vegetable supply for several years. The island’s development as a naval base paralleled the development of NSW and of Australia more widely. The precinct took shape during the major phase of nineteenth century development of Garden Island as a key naval station and headquarters for the Royal Navy in Australia. From the early decades of the twentieth century, Garden Island has functioned as the Royal Australian Navy’s major fleet base and ship-refitting dockyard, and the island remains in use by the RAN. Consequently, the precinct has a direct connection with an extensive period of naval activity in Australia, and is a place that is central to the story of Australia’s naval history. The continuing original use of many buildings is important. The precinct is closely associated with Australia’s naval participation in world conflicts and other wars during the twentieth century.
