Review: RENT at New Theatre Peterborough ★★★★
Written by guest reviewer Liam. Gifted in exchange for honest review.
Landmark Theatres’ new production of RENT, directed by Paul Jepson, has started its short tour at Peterborough New Theatre. RENT is a rock opera, adapted loosely from Puccini's La Boheme by Jonathan Larson and Billy Aronson, begins at Christmas Eve 1991 and shows us snapshots of a year in the lives of a group of friends in Manhattan's Alphabet City in the early 1990s.
The ensemble piece is led by Jack Reitman (Mark Cohen), Luke Friend (Roger), Evita Khrime (Mimi), Cameron Bernard Jones (Tom Collins), Kyle Richardson (Angel), Alicia Corrales (Maureen), Athena Collins (Joanne) and Myles Hart (Benny), who make up the eclectic mix of friends from filmmakers to drag queens and lawyers. With its anthemic score, RENT shows us the AIDS epidemic and social conflicts go on to impact the lives of this group through New Year and up to Christmas of the next year. The cast is rounded out by a star ensemble consisting of Kelliana Jay, Alex Okoampa, Edward Bullingham, Alexandra Brighouse, Max Mirza, Dylan Andrews and Olivia-Faith Kamau.
The work of the creative team, with direction by Paul Jepson, movement and choreography by Lucie Pankhurst, musical direction by Mark Crossland, set & costume design by award-winning Amanda Stooley, lighting by Andy Purves and sound by Alistair Penman, all combined very effectively into what felt like a fresh and exciting production of the widely loved show.
The standout on the production side was Susan Luciani’s film direction, which at various points throughout was used to accentuate already highly emotional points in the show. In particular, this hit me hard during the reprise of I’ll Cover You, which reduced me to tears, and was led by both Richardson as Angel, and Bernard Jones as Collins.
Speaking more of performances, in what is a very strong cast, additional standouts were Athena Collins (Joanne), Alicia Corrales (Maureen), and Jack Reitman (Mark).
Collins brought a remarkable amount of frustration and caring and humour to her role as Joanne; her voice was so beautiful and rich, which I was impressed by given the rigour of a role like Joanne. A particular highlight of the show was Collins’ work with Alicia Corrales as Maureen in Take Me or Leave Me, which showcased both performers emotionally and vocally. Collins’ chemistry continued to shine throughout the show as her work alongside Reitman in Tango Maureen. Both actors were terrifically funny, and did a great job of conveying the exasperation and irritation they each felt with their relationships with Maureen.
I was a huge fan of Corrales’ performance of Maureen’s Over the Moon, which featured a terrific piece of costuming from Amanda Stooley, combined fantastically with some really precise and comedic movement that had me in stitches laughing.
There were terrific performances across the board from the ensemble, particularly Dylan Andrews’ heartwrenching singing in Will I, where he expresses the fears of his character, a man living with HIV, of the disease robbing him of his dignity before he passes away. Some other particularly good moments for me from the ensemble included Max Mirza’s repeated, deeply “Noo Yawk” accented renditions of “Christmas bells are ringing” across the show and Alexandra Brighouse’s many moments popping up in voicemails.
Though I have highlighted individual moments, the level of quality from every single performance was so high. The moment that best showcased the strength of the ensemble in this show was, probably unsurprisingly, Rent's show-stopping number, Seasons of Love. This beautiful song really drives home the importance of centring the people you love in your life during your time with them, especially as sung by this absolutely stellar cast.
Previously, I’ve overlooked RENT, but I’m thrilled to say that since walking out of the auditorium, I now definitely consider myself a “Rent-Head”! It finally struck me watching it this time that RENT is a truly vital piece of theatre, and that even though certain aspects of its plot may have aged out of relevance (thanks to miraculous advances in the treatments available for people living with HIV and/or AIDS) the underlying message of valuing those close to you and making sure they know how loved they are is as timeless as any message I’ve ever experienced with a show.
Landmark Theatres’ RENT is a wonderful production of the modern classic musical, and given how fresh of a take it feels on the material, and to allow more people to see this astounding collection of performances, I would love to see this production get some further life following its short tour.
You can catch RENT here at New Theatre Peterborough until Saturday 29 June and at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple, from 3 to 7 July 2024. It will be thrilling to see what show Landmark might consider tackling next.

⟶ who doesn’t love hugh grant?
30+ YEAR OLDS BASED ON HUGH GRANT'S FILMOGRAPHY
this is a really ridiculously simple but fun request for a group of 30+ year old friends based off of....hugh grant's filmography. i've capped it at eight, and you’re welcome to switch out a film if you have one you prefer!
basically they all have personalities based off of the films below and they all are friends because they all have worked/currently work on the same street in santa flora’s downtown. they met working on it with most of the workplaces right beside each other. so they all swap free things and meet for lunches and then get plastered together when they are off!!! its a lot of fun for this early 30s crew okay.
i have magnolia woods (32, margot robbie) and she works as a pilates instructor! but some other options are: a bookstore, a cafe, a dispensary, a law firm, a tech business, a sandwich shop, a ups store, marketing firms in downtown, anything really.
below you’ll find the different films + personalities to go with them!

INSPIRED BY ABOUT A BOY
lowkey a piece of shit. perpetual liar and has gotten really good at it. an absolute “womanizer” and overly confident despite the fact everybody tells them they really shouldn’t be. lazy!!! and probably a nanny for a living [a male nanny would be ace for this].

36 • nanny • ben barnes

INSPIRED BY TWO WEEKS NOTICE
very wealthy but also very indecisive. can be an asshole but does it unknowingly because they are a “child” when it comes down to things. only has a job because it’s a “fun addition to their life” and they are bored. likely has no idea how to do anything without somebody’s help.
first last name
30+ • job • dakota johnson
played by mc
INSPIRED BY FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL
perpetually late and lives in a tiny place. cannot hold down a job for the life of her and has gotten really good at lying on her resume. would rather die than work in an office every single day. a serial dater that is currently dealing with multiple of their exes getting married and doesn’t know what to do about it.
magnolia “maggie” woods

I’m so sorry this post is so long but I couldn’t add a cut on this one because Tumblr kept eating it

well i finished da2 <33 gonna start inquisition tomorrow when i get home from work. finalish da2 thoughts under the cut
ok so . combat in this game was extremely boring for the most part. i had to do so many different upgrades in the little skill trees to get to skills that were actually interesting . and then i had to do it over again to get another interesting skill. and even then, those paled in comparison to the origins skills/combat. by the endgame, though, i was having a little fun.
the enemies and environments are suuuper repetitive in this game but i am definitely not saying anything new there. i will be happy to never run through the same 4 caves with the same 5 types of enemies materializing in waves tho <3
as for the companions, i ended up really enjoying them. i did miss being able to have a bunch of full conversations with my companions on the road, or at one camp, but i think this game made up for it by making my companions, for the most part... actually friends with each other, too. the banter is just better when they like... don't really Have to hang around each other for some world-saving responsibility, they just choose to . even though they annoy each other <3
for the first act, i pretty much just kept isabela, varric and anders in my party, and they actually really got along well which was a welcome change from morrigan and alistair's "banter" which was just them actually not liking each other lmao. and the things that netted positive friendship points for one of them, would at the very least not take away points from the others . because i couldn't bring myself to go the rival path for any of them DSJFLK
after the first act, though, i switched aveline in for a bit, and through that + doing fenris' and merrill's companion quests, i was able to boost everyone to full friendship level. and SDFKLS isabela and aveline's conversations were so fucking funny i ended up liking aveline. i also liked the quest where she was really bad at flirting that was endearing.
but i think my favorite details with the companions were how they would just visit each other <33 like i really liked going over to visit my bestie anders and seeing isabela getting treated for an sti. that truly made the world feel alive.
also i absolutely did not regret going with the isabela romance because i love her but . if i were to replay, which i may do at some point, i may go for anders. on that note, if i replay, i may play a mage because i'd like to see more of what carver is like.
my favorite quests were probably the one where hawke's mom died, every quest where isabela is important, the zevran quest where hawke gets to have a threesome with him and isabela, the one where hawke can play wingman to aveline, and the nathaniel quest. i do think a lot of the story and writing for this one was very strong, if it was encased in a lot of stale, repetitive gameplay.
very excited to see what inquisition is like, gameplay and story-wise. i was aware of a few things (from googling stuff about the other games and also from that one time like a year ago when larson broke down someone's bad dorian take in my dms) but there's also a lot i don't know so i'm looking forward to playing it.
i played a human warrior in origins, and you're locked as a human in da2 (and i was a rogue), so i think im gonna play an elf or qunari mage in inquisition. to spice things up a bit.
