A similar vibe happens in the murderbot series by Martha Wells and it is so good.

I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.

Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.

Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.

So I'm thinking that Murderbot wandered around for almost four years without actually being forced to do anything. By the time it was working the PreservationAux gig anyone who was actually paying attention to physical behavior would have seen the undignified struggle of a person working through teenage-level impulse control...binge-watching torrented Netflix, failing to read any of required documentation for it's assignments, throwing bloody armor pieces all over the floor since no one ever comes into the security rec room...

I was skeptical of All Systems Red by Martha Wells considering its the first book in a series called The Murderbot Diaries. Murderbot sounds ridiculous! But I finally read it and loved it. Read it in one sitting. There were parts of the main plot that were a bit predictable or common, but the narrative of Murderbot with its humans was great. All Systems Red by Martha Wells is the first book in her Murderbot Diary series. “On a distant planet, a small group of scientists is conducting research accompanied by their Company-supplied security android. Unknown to the group their SecUnit has hacked his own governor module and refers to himself as “Murderbo” He hates all human interaction and prefers to spend as much time as he can watching entertainment vids. But when a nearby group of researchers goes quiet, it’s up to Murderbot to get to the truth.” How can you not want to read a sci-fi novella with a character called Murderbot. He doesn’t do any murdering, just protects his group from the compromised androids. This reads like classic sci-fi (Asimov and Heinlein, not Jules Verne) There is technology here but the story is about the characters not space ships 🚀 and worm holes. A nice change-of-pace and a quick read. This was published in ‘17 so I’m headed to read the rest of the series. This was a fun and surprising read. The main character, Murderbot, is a robot-human hybrid and is so interesting and well drawn. I was fascinated from the start. Since this is a novella, the story just scratches the surface, but at the same time felt like a complete unit. Hola a todos. Hoy les comparto una reseña de una joyita. "All systems Red" de Martha Wells. Un androide letal, puesto por parte de una compañía de seguros a disposición de un grupo de científicos para asegurar la seguridad en sus expediciones. El mismo androide que “hackeo” el sistema operativo puesto por la aseguradora para poder disponer libremente de su “centro de entretenimiento” y ver series y películas, para hacer más llevadera su misión e interactuar lo menos posible con los humanos, a quienes no les tiene mucho cariño. A eso hay que agregarle que, además de su letalidad tiene ciertas actitudes sheldorianas(The big bang theory) que lo hacen que sea único. All Systems Red fue galardonada con los premios Nébula, Locus y Hugo a la mejor novela corta. Si bien es una novela que en su momento la leí en ingles hoy, 6 de febrero, se pone a la venta en España de la mano de la editorial Alethé @alethe_ed y traducida por Carla Batallé. Antes que nada les quiero decir que nos encontramos ante una joyita de la ciencia ficción. Si bien la historia puede parecer bastante “cliché“, lo que realmente enriquece su lectura es poder ver el desarrollo de la historia a través de los ojos del Androide. Hacía mucho que no leía una composición de un personaje tan bien logrado como en éste caso. Lo que hace Martha Wells es increíble y rompe un poco con la estructura clásica de la ciencia ficción, introduciendo una cuota de diversión que hace que todo encaje perfecto. “All system red” (Sistemas Críticos) es la primera entrega de esta saga llamada “The Murderbot Diaries”,(Los Diarios de Matabot) la cual tiene publicada en inglés 4 volúmenes, “Artificial Condition”, “Rogue Protocol” y “Exit Strategy”. No dejen de leer ésta primera entrega que lo van a disfrutar. Lo recomiendo !
