“It was a group effort from then on,” Sullivan said, and onlookers all moved swiftly since Keawena had no pulse.Ī woman certified in first aid - the girls did not get her name - confidently carried out 10 rounds of CPR while Sullivan held her hand under Keawena’s head, turning it to the side when water or blood came up.Įzell held his head up, making sure his airway wasn’t blocked and his lungs could expand and take in more air. “Honestly, what was running through my mind was just making sure that we do everything that we could to bring him back.”Īnother 2020 Oakville graduate, Macy Kimble, helped Sullivan pull Keawena onto a rock flat enough to give compressions. “I’ve never had to deal with anything like that, especially just lifeguarding around Oakville,” she said.

Witnessing her friend take charge in the rescue, Martin said of Sullivan, “She went into full action.”Īlthough it went off without a hitch, this was Sullivan’s first major rescue as a lifeguard and first under the water. Planting her feet on the river bottom, Sullivan picked Keawena up and pushed both of them above the water. At first she thought he might be surfacing as she dove under, but then she saw him lying facedown on the floor of the Black River, 8 feet below the surface. Donning her goggles, Sullivan dipped underwater to swim and saw that every time she’d return to the surface, Keawena wasn’t in his usual spot between his friends. The former lifeguard bought the goggles on a whim because she knew the water at the Shut-Ins is so murky that it’s difficult to see. “I had noticed before that someone was fake drowning which does happen a lot, and his friends were saying he was a real big jokester,” Sullivan said. But his group of about six friends didn’t take him seriously. All three have worked in the last few years as lifeguards at the Lake of the Woods subdivision pool.Īfter spending nearly the whole day at the park, a few of the lifeguards noticed that Keawena, part of a separate group whose friends called him “Teddy,” seemed to be struggling in the water. Three of the girls in the group have worked as lifeguards at local pools around Oakville - Sullivan 2021 OHS graduate Alyson Martin and Halle Ezell, an Oakville 2020 graduate. She and a large group of friends, including several lifeguards certified in first aid, headed to the popular but dangerous swimming hole at the state park in Reynolds County to celebrate the start of summer after that trip to Walgreens, where Sullivan bought a pair of goggles. He was pulled from the water by Emma Sullivan, 19, a 2020 Oakville High graduate and current student at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the 19-year-old who nearly drowned around 2:30 p.m. A teenager who nearly drowned at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park last week was rescued by a group of quick-thinking teen lifeguards visiting from Oakville, with help from a fateful trip to Walgreens.

NPR remembers front-line workers who have died from COVID-19; here are three:

Yves-Emmanuel Segui, 60: Pharmacist in Yonkers, N.Y.

[Chloe] Morit says her father took the pharmacy licensing test eight times. He never gave up — and finally passed.  Segui got a job at a community pharmacy on the border of Yonkers and the Bronx about two years ago, but he continued to make ends meet as a parking garage attendant in Newark, N.J. He died on April 6 of COVID-19.  "I have so many good memories of growing up in the Ivory Coast with my dad. Going to get ice cream was one of the happiest things. Taking trips through the country with him. I love driving because of that — he taught me how to drive," Morit says.

Harrison had been a nurse for 30 years.  "I think she just, she didn't consider herself first; she always put others before herself, so I know that she was more worried about the other residents than herself," [daughter Amanda] Williams says.  She fondly remembers her mother playing, laughing and dancing with her grandchildren.  "She was just a sassy, sassy woman from Alabama that would speak her mind," Williams recalls. Harrison loved Alabama football and country foods — she was best known for her banana pudding and strawberry shortcake.

Scott Blanks, 34.  Dental assistant in Whittier, Calif.

Estrada remembers a video of Blanks dancing at his wedding.  "They're doing a Mexican line dance to Spanish music with Scott. So it's all Latinos. And then here's this African American guy dancing, this, this Mexican line dance, and he's doing it better than everybody else."  That was the last time Estrada saw him.
