Yesterday I went with KJ all over the place. We started by going to the Amish community close by. We saw the cutest puppies one family had for sale, they were mutts, but cute mutts. KJ wants a puppy because her dog is very old and does not protect the house anymore, she lives I a shady neighborhood. She said she wants either a dog or a gun to protect herself. She should get a gun regardless (and I’m not pro guns) just because she rides her bike and takes the public bus to go to work and back and it’s dangerous for her sometimes.
We then went to Waverly which is about 45 minutes away, they had a craft fair, we stopped at Hyvee first and ate Chinese food there, my second time getting food at Hyvee and it was really good. When we were done we went to the craft fair it was conveniently next door. KJ bought some fall and Christmas decorations and I got the cutest vintage Santa Claus an and Mrs. Claus, I had to scrape for cash, between KJ and I we found 19 dollars for both. They were 10.00 each.
We went to Trinkets and Togs and the Good Will in Weaverly, I like them much better than the ones near me because they’re bigger so there’s more room for people to walk around and I think they have nicer things. I did get some winter decorations to take to work. I can’t decorate with christmas ornaments but I can take all other winter decorations like snowmen and such. We went back to the craft fair right before we left Waverly because KJ really wanted to get a small Christmas tree that she just loved. She got some cash out and paid 15 instead of 20.
After we came back to town we stopped to get some bubble tea for KJ (I don’t care for bubble tea) then Kohls and last stop was RAYGUN in Cedar Falls. A couple of weeks ago when Tonya was here I just had bought a t-shirt that said Barbie Reads Banned Books. They didn’t have my size. They said I can order it online. KJ got a mystery bag that has a couple of t-shirts, a card, postcards, stickers, fake tattoos, etc. I never want to get those because the shirts will be too small for me. She got a small and medium sizes which will not fit her. She was still happy with everything else.
All in all we had a great day. Today I’ll have to do laundry and clean. I debated on putting up some of the outdoors Christmas decorations just because it’ll be in the 60s but I don’t want to deal with the many boxes and mess just yet. I’ll enjoy everyone else’s decorations especially at night. A whole bunch of people have their Christmas trees up already. One of these years I’ll put mine up before thanksgiving but that seems wrong. 🙂

50, 100 and 200 for the mini reviews? ✨️ congrats on your reading year!
Thank you!! These are all mysteries, lol. I already like the genre, and this year in particular I was trying out a lot of different mystery series.
#50 was Broken English by P. L. Gaus. It's book two in a mystery series. It's set in Amish country in Ohio, and there's three characters especially - the sheriff, a professor, and an Amish pastor - who have all known each other a long time and work together to solve the mystery (in this book, a girl's murder). The mystery wasn't bad, but I wasn't particularly drawn to any of the recurring characters in the series, and it was a little dark and also sensational for me (the kind of thing where the murderer can't be caught without a chase and/or a shoot-out) so I stopped reading the series after this one!
#100 was Crime and Punctuation, by Kaitlyn Dunnett. First in a mystery series! This is a cozy series with an older woman protagonist, so I liked the way she was a little Marple-ish in her gathering of information, but also not helpless. The mystery hung together but wasn't super convoluted. I read a few more in this series, which isn't very long yet, and would probably pick it up again if in the right mood! The books do start to get kind of similar pretty quickly.
#200 was Murder at Melrose Court, by Karen Baugh Menuhin. The others in this post were library books; this was a book I picked up at a little free library just by chance. It looks self-published, which I admit made me go in with low expectations, but it was actually pretty good! The back says it's Agatha Christie meets Wodehouse, which seems about right: it's the 1920s in England, several people get snowed into a manor house (for Christmas - I read this recently and it was accidentally very seasonal), murder happens, the young Lord who is the protagonist decides to solve it. I don't think it's a book that I will keep forever, but I'm glad I read it once! (And it seems to be first in a series, so I might seek out more.)
(send me a number between 1 and 214 and I will tell you about a book I read this year!)

Interview with Patricia Johns
Murder of an Amish Bridegroom has author Patricia Johns venturing into a new genre, a cozy mystery. Her heroine is not the typical Amish woman.
Petunia Yoder is Blueberry, Pennsylvania’s youngest old maid, at twenty-two years of age, and is completely unmarriageable. As she ventures into a store she finds her best friend, Eden, standing over a dead body who happens to be her secret lover, Ike Smoker.  He is a bad boy literally because there is no one in the community who likes him. Homicide detective Asher Nate is called to investigate. He knows it will be difficult because the Amish community stick close together and will not readily talk to an “English” detective. Petunia volunteers to be his go between because she loves mysteries. As they investigate it becomes apparent that they like each other, and Petunia is willing to be a “consultant” to the police. Both want to find the killer and Petunia knows in her heart that Eden is innocent.
This is a great start to hopefully a new cozy mystery series.  There are great likeable characters, a storyline that will keep readers guessing as to who the antagonist is, and an interesting setting. Hopefully, there will be many more books in this potential series.
A Boy’s Amish Christmas is more typical of a Patricia Johns novel. The story has friendships, surprising revelations, and heartwarming scenes.
The plot begins when Brett Rockwell, his young nephew, Damian, and journalist/blogger Emaline Piper become stuck in a snowstorm and end up having to spend a couple of days in an Amish Bed and Breakfast. When Emaline learns that Brett is from the famous political family of the Rockwells, she begins to see a possible step to further her future as a journalist. As they become closer friends, she is sure there are secrets that he is hiding and starts to delve into finding out what these are, which she soon learns also includes his young nephew.
The other segment of the plot brings back Eeyore the escape artist donkey, Eli, and Belinda. These senior citizens are also trying to navigate their relationship.
Both these books are fabulous reads.  Per usual the characters have heartwarming backstories, and the plots are gripping.
Elise Cooper: Why someone on the spectrum?
Patricia Johns:  A Boy’s Amish Christmas is the last book in the series. I knew I wanted to bring together the two old folks at the end.  My own son was never tested to see if he is on the spectrum, but he is a very sensitive little boy.  When he had started school, he would cry constantly, hated going because he had no friends.  It broke my heart when he said no one likes him. The boy in the story is on the spectrum.  It was not a direct comparison but a little based on my son.
EC:  How would you describe Damian, the little boy?
PJ:  Sensitive, likes avoiding people, tender, germophobic, and vulnerable.  He does not know how to respond to others’ emotions.
EC:  Why make Emaline an influencer?
PJ:  I started writing her as a journalist. But my editor wanted me to change it.
EC:  How would you describe her?
PJ: Dislikes those who abuse power. Protective, observant, articulate, and smart.  She sees how Damian is really struggling and empathizes with him.
EC:  How would you describe Brett?
PJ:  He was a drinker and playboy but is now a rancher.  He comes from privilege.  At the beginning of the book, he is very much under his family’s thumb. He fulfills a role for his family. They do not want him to change because they saw him as a bit of a loser with a personal life in shambles. He has now matured.
EC:  What about the relationship between her and Brett?
PJ:  Emaline is very curious about him. He does not rise to her expectations. This is a point of connection between them. They are concerned that Damian is floundering. They also connected because each had family drama.  She could appreciate his family drama because of hers. He was attracted that Emaline is a regular person. They both do not want their secrets exposed to the world.
EC:  What about Eli and Belinda’s relationship?
PJ:  I enjoy them as a couple.  Eli can be a pain in the neck but does love her dearly. I am glad they received a happily ever after. I wish I could have explored their relationship more in depth but due to space I couldn’t.
EC:  What about the other book, Murder of an Amish Bridegroom?
PJ:  This is my first cozy mystery. It was nominated for an Edgar Award. I am not sure if there will be more coming out, depending on sales. I like writing both romance and a mystery.  One genre, I marry them off, the other I kill them off. I really would enjoy going back and forth.
EC:  Why did you make the Amish woman, Petunia, an assistant to the police detective?
PJ:  She is my sleuth. If there was a murder the police would be called in. She oversteps sometimes.  She is a modern woman in an Amish world.  She is not supposed to question men. She fails to do it because she is logical. She is too nosy.  She cannot let go of something when something does not make sense.
EC:  What about Asher?
PJ:  It will come out if there are future books that he has an Amish heritage and wants to understand the Amish world. He is direct, and a man of secrets.
EC:  Asher and Petunia-will they have a relationship?
PJ:  I would like to work it out that they will get together in the end.  This is the romance writer in me. It will take a few books to do it. He feels tender and protective toward Petunia. They believe in right and wrong.
EC:  Next book?
PJ:  It is stand-alone. It is titled, An Amish Country Reunion. It comes out in late June. It is about a Pennsylvania State Trooper who is sent to the puppy school.  Her old partner is the Sergeant there.  They used to be on the same level and now she must call him sir. There will be a cozy mystery, a missing antique watch.
THANK YOU!!

The Amish Mother's Secret by Diane Craver
Tumblr media
Book Details:
Title: The Amish Mother's Secret
Series: N/A
Author: Diane Craver
Publisher: Vinspire Publishing
Pages: 261
Release Date:  December 27, 2022
Genre:  Amish Romance
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Book Description:
Sometimes a beautiful miracle comes to you at exactly the wrong time… Lindsay Prescott is forty and single when tragedy strikes. Diagnosed with stage 4, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer, her instinct is to right the wrongs in her life. Her unfortunate childhood with an alcoholic, verbally abusive mother drove her to break free in desperation at the age of 17. While working at a hotel along the beach on the East Coast, she met Harris Manning. He took her breath away and she gave herself to him in love. Harris' life was already planned out for him by his wealthy parents. Falling for Lindsay had been a dream. However, compelled to wed the woman his parents chose for him, he’d left her to endure a shaky marriage. Though Harris never knew it, Lindsay found herself pregnant when he left her with no way to care for identical triplets on her own. When the triplets were five months old, she reconnected with an Amish couple—Katie and Roman Yoder—who were unable to have children. The Yoders adopted Amy and Jenna while Lindsay kept Phoebe. She couldn’t bear to give all three babies away. In the years that followed, Katie worked hard to keep her away from her adopted daughters. When you let go of a miracle, can you ever capture it again?
My Thoughts:  Heart Wrenching
The Amish Mother's Secret was absolutely heart wrenching. Author Diane Craver has beautifully written this story in such a way that makes the reader feel what Lindsay went through in the past as well as her present. She doesn't sugar coat any of the feelings, pain, or frustrations that Lindsay has had to deal with. The story also lets the reader feel what the other characters who have also been affected by the past and present situations are feeling as they too must deal with everything. There is pain, joy, so much more as new revelations continue to come up. Through it all are the messages of love, forgiveness, second chances, new beginnings, and trusting God's will, His plans for our lives, and His timing. It truly is a beautiful and moving story.
Diane Craver is a new author to me, and I really didn't know what to expect.  However, after reading The Amish Mother's Secret I guarantee that I will be looking forward to reading more of her works.
Book Quotes:
Roman shrugged. “Many times, I don’t have the answers, but I pray, and God helps me with everything.”
But God is good. He is my strength, and I leave nothing to chance and everything to God.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and strictly my own.

About the Author:  Diane Craver
As the youngest in the family, growing up on a farm in Findlay, Ohio, Diane often acted out characters from her own stories in the backyard. In high school she was the student sitting in class with a novel hidden in front of her propped up textbook. Before starting on her writing career, Diane was a schoolteacher and play director.
She met her husband while teaching at an orphanage, and they married three years later. While raising their six children in southwestern Ohio, Diane started writing non-fiction. Later, she decided it would be a nice escape to write fiction plus keep sane with a full and noisy household.
Several non-fiction articles of Diane's have been published in Woman's World Weekly, The Catholic Telegraph, Virtue, Down Syndrome Today, WritersWeekly.com, and several other publications. Her book, The Christmas of 1957, was reissued under the title A Christmas Gift. It placed second in the 2010 Preditors & Editors Poll (novel category) and received 5 stars from the Midwest Book Review. She writes Amish fiction, contemporary romance, inspirational mainstream, chick-lit mystery, and non-fiction books. Her novels have received great reviews from readers and reviewers.
Diane has published through a variety of houses, including Publishing by Rebecca J. Vickery, Samhain Publishing, Whimsical Publications, Victory Tales Press and Booklocker.com. She writes fun and inspiring stories filled with memorable characters. Diane gives thanks to God daily for all her wonderful blessings.
Diane has two Amish series. There are four books in her DREAMS of PLAIN DAUGHTERS Series. Another series is THE BISHOP'S DAUGHTERS. The fifth book in this series will be released soon. She also wrote two shorts, AN AMISH STARRY CHRISTMAS NIGHT and AN AMISH STARRY SUMMER NIGHT. Diane has reissued several of her books that were previously published. Author To Author Interview
Orville Burch To L.M. Ford
Orville: How long have you been writing
LM Ford: Extensive writing was necessary in university and graduate school.  When I started my career, writing was a significant part of it. Yet I disliked the whole process. After a few years, something changed. I got interested in telling some of the stories in my imagination and now completely love what I once hated.
Orville: What got you interested in writing?
LM Ford: My first serious writing, i.e. the first I finished, started because I believe in recording family stories. So I started writing down stories of a family member who was orphaned in 1880 and was taken into a Dunkard family (similar to the Amish). I ended up writing a book that was researched and based on the oral traditions, but was fictionalized into a novel. After numerous editors said how much they liked it, but didn’t buy the book, I’ve published The Thanksgiving Child through Amazon
Orville: How many books do you have published?
LM Ford: 7 Cozy Mysteries & 2 other books currently at Amazon. I have 12 books under a different pen name with traditional publishers, but am enjoying the freedom of publishing at Amazon.
Orville: Are your books self-published or traditionally published?
LM Ford: I am both self-published and traditionally published.
Orville: Are you a plotter or a pantser
LM Ford: I’m probably more of a pantser, but have used both approaches. For one publisher, I had to develop an extended synopsis before writing the book that was under contract, so those were plotted.
Orville: What are your hobbies outside of writing?
LM Ford: Reading, Rocks, Genealogy, Hiking, collecting folk tales
Orville: Who was the greatest influence in your writing career?
LM Ford: I grew up in a household where both my parents had good insight into people and we interacted with a lot of interesting people. While I’ve never copied one in writing, that knowledge has definitely helped me create fun and interesting characters. My father wrote poetry, my Mom always beat everyone in word games.
Orville: Do you have a favorite quote?
LM Ford: I’ve always gotten a kick out of the Errol Flynn line in Captain Blood. “This is what I call a timely interruption.” The setting of the scene is what makes it funny, of course.
Orville: What genre do you write?
LM Ford: I write in several genres. I’m currently concentrating on Cozy Mysteries and have three series at Amazon, each with a different focus and flavor.
Orville: What are your book titles?
LM Ford: The Thanksgiving Child, Whatever Happened to Little Jackie, Being Derrick Jenkins; No Dumping Allowed; No Pepper, Please, The Secret at Raven’s Point; Smuggler’s Cove; The Kensington Affair. I also have a Christmas book called The Road to Bethlehem.
Orville: Is your work on Kindle Unlimited?
LM Ford: Yes, all of it.
Orville: What are you currently working on (when will it be available)
LM Ford: I am currently working on the third book in the Movie Madness Mystery Series, which will not be available until 2023.
Orville: Who is your target audience?
LM Ford: Since I have an eclectic interest in writing myself, I wouldn’t want to exclude anyone.
Orville: What advice would you give a young person planning a writing career?
LM Ford: Be realistic, but never give up your dreams.
Orville: Do you think there are writing themes that are underrepresented.
LM Ford: Much of the traditional market seems driven by what’s selling, so at any given time, there may be some themes and genres that don’t get much representation.

Chris Carter Continuity Plague: A Dissertation Upon the Origin of (Alien) Species in The X-Files Vol. 1
Season 1
S1E10 “Fallen Angel” - Our first look, as it were, at what would become the “mytharc” aliens (note, the Mytharc proper was not yet a Thing, so there’s definitely some Early Installment Weirdness here).  Escaped from downed craft Yautja-style invisibility powers, radiation blasts, possible bodysnatching.  Items 1, 3, and 4 would all go on to become on-and-off features of the Black Oil, so let’s call it an in-universe early appearance.  I like being generous.
S1E14 “Genderbender” - Bunch of Frickin’ Weirdos.  Humanoid aliens living up in BFE pretending to be Amish.  Exactly What It Says on the Tin: can change (humanoid) genders at will.  Having sex with them kills humans because their Pheromone Game Too Strong.  No relation to any other alien species involved in the mytharc or any other episode.  Fuck off back to Wherever at the end of the episode and are never heard from again.  K Bye.
S1E17 “EBE” Captured at a crash site, and that’s literally all we know.  Probably one of the mytharc species.  I guess.
S1E24 “The Erlenmeyer Flask” - NOW we’re getting somewhere!  Meet the colonists, the hybrids, and Purity Control.  WTF is Purity Control?  A virus wrapped in a bacteria wrapped in 6 (6!  This Is Important!!) base pairs wrapped in an enigma.  Hybrids (and, assumedly, the aliens they’ve been hybridized with) have green poisonous blood that eats through stuff.  That last bit won’t be seen again.  Also an alien fetus that looks like a classic Grey.  Good stuff, there’s meat on these bones.
Season 2
S2E10 “Red Museum” - That darned Purity Control is back.  Still don’t know what the hell it’s supposed to actually be, but when injected into teenagers apparently it...turns them into Jerk Jock hoodlums?  ‘Kay.
S2E16/17 “Colony/Endgame” - Aaaaand the Hybrids are back, but uh oh there’s a new kid in town!  Meet the Bounty Hunter, a shapeshifter who looks like low-rent Schwarzenegger in his default form (who the hell is paying the bounties?  Are there interstellar bail bondsmen?)  Also the poison blood from last season is revealed to be a retrovirus that clots all your blood into jell-o in your veins.  So...basically the Andromeda Strain. Also the Bounty Hunter crashed his ship in order to get here.  Apparently UFOs in this ‘verse can hover but boy they sure can’t land for shit.
S2E24 “Anasazi” - More hybrids, but these guys look like classic Greys.  Guess they were the rejects.
Season 3
S3E15/16 “Piper Maru/Apocrypha” - The Black Oil finally appears as itself!  Exactly What it Says on the Tin: black, oily goo.  OH GOD IT’S IN MY EYES!!!  Bodysnatching and radiation blasts are a thing, but no more invisibility. Bummer. Wants to get back to its ship. That crashed. Seriously, who the hell gave all of these assholes their pilots’ licenses?
S3E24 “Talitha Cumi” - ...the Shapeshifters have healing powers now?  ‘Kay.  Also something something BEES!!  NOT THE BEES!!!!
Season 4
S4E8/9 “Tunguska/Terma” - Return of the Son of the Black Oil.  Still black and oily.  Makes little wormy things now that crawl under your skin and control you via your pineal gland?  We’ve ditched the spaceships, though: now the Black Oil comes from meteorites!!  And also no more radiation blasts!  We’re losing cool points here rapidly, guys.  There’s also a Russian assassin going around injecting Black Oil victims with something that looks an awful lot like that Purity Control shit we forgot about two seasons ago.  Hm...
S4 E24 “Gethsemane” - SURPRISE!!  All the aliens were fake all along!  DUN DUN DUNNNN...
Season 5
S5E6/7 “Christmas Carol/Emily” - ...JUST KIDDING.  Our old friends the Hybrids are back, in the form of a cherubic little girl named Emily who happens to be a hybrid of, dun dun dunn, SCULLY.  Holy shit.  Alas, though, the hybridization is unstable and she dies (after poisoning some ER staff with her blood).  Merry Christmas!
S5E24 “The End” - New hybrid kid!  This one’s telepathic.  ‘Kay.
The Movie
Yeah, remember all that shit I just wrote about the Black Oil?  Just forget all of that lol because SURPRISE CHESTBURSTERS!!!! The Bees!!!! are back, though!  Now they carry the Black Oil too.  So don’t get stung or you’ll come down with a nasty case of SURPRISE CHESTBURSTERS!!!   Also there’s a vaccine now.  Could THAT be our mysterious Purity Control????  Do the writers even remember Purity Control???  STAY TUNED....
