The deep aching sadness of knowing the creators of your favourite game WANT to make a sequel, but the game didn't sell enough for that to be possible, and knowing if they had made the 2nd idea first it would have sold better

I just finished Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and now I'm sad it's over. It kinda lagged a bit near the end, but what a game. It's definitely one of my favourite games of recent years and I recommend it to everyone who's really into evolution and human evolutionary history like I am. Steep learning curve but so worth it.

There's this game that lets you play through like. Human evolution from the perspective of early hominids and we've had it for a couple years now. It's a very hard game with next to no pointers or tutorials, you just gotta know how to turn these monkeys into humans through tool use and defensive strategy and migration and communication and needless to say I am hopelessly addicted to the monkeys

Tell me in the tags your comfort videogame(s); games where you open it to simply enjoy the atmosphere or the game otherwise grants you a lot of calm and comfort. I heavily encourage "weird" answers.

I've been playing Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey lately and something it's made me realise is that I quite like it when games have unique and slightly idiosyncratic control schemes.
At first it can be a little frustrating but there's a certain charm in part of learning how a game works being learning how to effectively control your character as opposed to starting and having how things work be immediately familiar because the control scheme is one of the accepted default layouts.
I'm also reminded of another favourite of mine, Katamari Damacy, where learning how to manipulate your katamari is basically the challenge of the entire game.
I think in the case of A:THO, it fits the theme of the game nicely as well since you're slowly making your ape more and more capable in a variety of aspects, including dexterity. So there's a nice parallel with them becoming more effective through a skill tree as you become more effective at controlling them through becoming more adept with the control scheme.

The Ancestors: the humankind odyssey experience is you run from a sabertooth tigers cousin up a tree and then have to dodge a fucking eagle while also bleeding out.
Very fun game, would recommend.

Important: All found meteorites - disposable. It is clear that finding them and the right to collect costs at least save time for a generational change. If we have 6 pups, the one with the meteorite will be 8 genetic fixations, two 10, three 12. Scoured the Internet, gone when the smoke of one of the meteorites didn't find anything similar.Įach found a meteorite (be sure to pick up small at the back!), gives +2 genetic fixation in one generation. Write comments, would complement and correct if somewhere nakosyachil. If anyone is interested in infa meteorites. When we get to play it, getting to witness that basic sense of awe amidst the struggle to survive will probably be the ultimate test of whether the game works or not.Guide to meteorites? (Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey) "You relive that moment on the screen and you feel like 'oh, somehow I've been there.'"ĭésilets' goals are lofty but worth exploring through Ancestors. He also hopes to show how similar we really are to our ancestors how we're not so much smarter than them as we suspect. A game that achieves this could make us feel small in awe of the natural world, not to mention all the work it took to gradually conquer it and bend it to our will. The core idea Désilets keeps returning to is that he wants us to empathize with the creatures we used to be. "You write all sorts of weird stories for yourself." I want you to have a little bit of creativity in your adventure," he said. As a baby primate in unfamiliar surroundings, you'll see phantoms all around and your viewpoint vignettes in fear.ĭésilets insists he doesn't want to tell players what to do in Ancestors. Without the right enzymes, you'll get sick eating an egg.

In Ancestors, you don't start the game knowing how to hold items in both hands. There is still, however, a HUD, and a skill tree of neurons which visualizes your evolution. What incentivizes you to move forward are depleting food supplies, the desire to explore and outrunning predators - the essentials of survival. There is an "intelligence" system that scans surroundings for landmarks, but your attention can also be gently redirected by, say, the rising smoke from a crashed meteor. There's no mini-map ("It's not about going from a little dot to another little dot," says Désilets) and no inventory (you hold what you have in two hands, or a member of your clan holds it for you). The desperate battle to avoid extinction is not necessarily conducive to flights of fancy.Īncestors tries to have a light touch. The challenge is trying to create the kind of jungle sandbox that encourages player exploration, while still placing them in a realistically unforgiving environment.

Out on August 27th on PC (with PS4 and Xbox One following in December), it's a third-person action-adventure game with plenty of tree climbing, but it's also a survival game. Ancestors represents the first title from the 35-person studio he co-founded in 2014, Panache Digital Games. Not now Turn on Turned on Turn onĭésilets led the Assassin's Creed games as well as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time before an acrimonious split from Ubisoft.
