i dont think dean or sam had it worse precanon. i do however think that dean, at the start of spn, is fundamentally damaged in a way sam just isn't (yet). wrt to their childhoods its like. sam comes out fighting, and stuff hurts you a lot less that way. he is so so strong and fierce and brave and recognises their upbringing as fucked up. but dean has sublimated himself to the situation and accepted it and internalised that this is how it has to be because of something lacking within him, in fact he's told himself there was nothing wrong with it at all and therefore is completely unable to process his own trauma or stop himself from reenacting his abusive fathers behaviors because that would require really coming to terms with the idea that those behaviors were Bad. augh.

#and its like some people will say oh thats cause dean protected sam #no. i think its because dean undergoes that actual trauma of losing his entire life and his mother aged four and is old enough to understan #what's going on and even what his dad needs right now. and proceeds to become it. he has no way of knowing what hes committing himself to..#this lifetime role of exactly what john wants and 'needs'. whereas sam grows up and that role has been fulfilled. by dean.#jesus christ i need to stop writing spn meta i keep rereading sentences adn going Okay now apply this to your life #Anyway... augh #my brain just stopped working. whatever #my point is. the circumstances in which dean and sam grow up while in some ways technically identical are actualy rly differnet in terms of #the developmental stages #Also just like.
