Breaking Up With Your Phone: Phone Detox
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHAT IS A PHONE DETOX?
The Oxford Dictionary defines a detox as, ''a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.'' Paired with the word phone, the phrase describes the concept of limiting your phone usage, in hopes of not only taking a break from the digital world but to see positive effects in your attention span, relationships and real life commitments.
WHY SHOULD YOU COMPLETE A PHONE DETOX?
If you're anything like me, your phone is everything. It's a place of entertainment, with tiktoks and reels. It's a place of motivation with pinterest and various tumblr posts. It's educational, an untouched language app sitting somewhere on your screen. And, what is most important and the reason of its creation, it's a way to connect with your friends, family and strangers on the internet.
While it all sounds perfect, the negative effects simply outdo everything you get:
Increased Stress Levels
Difficulty with Sleeping
Struggle with Memory, Attention and Problem-Solving Skills
Poor Effect on Mental Health
Hinders Development of Social Skills
HOW CAN I COMPLETE A PHONE DETOX?
If you've done any research on 'phone detoxes,' you'll find that the advice tends to be drastic. Youtubers, who lock their phones in safes or switch to a dumb phone. Or bloggers, who swear by 24 hours of doing absolutely nothing, no entertainment to 'reset the brains.'
Maybe for some people, that works, I can't deny it completely. However, a lot of people have commitments. Work. School. The need for a GPS, the need of being some sort of connected to your circle. Or the need of your phone for flashcards, learning. So this style of 'phone detox,' aims to limit and lower your screen time, not take an absolutist approach! (With these steps, I'd suggest about 3-7 days between each step, to make it more easier to being consistent.)
STEP 1 -> MAKE YOUR PHONE UNATTRACTIVE:
The reason why anyone struggles with phone addiction is due it being such a dopamine trigger. The ability of having any information at your fingertips, and any form of entertainment has done overwhelming harm. Therefore, the first step is to make your phone unappealing and unnatractive for you through:
Turn on Greyscale, making your phone less appealing with the lack of vibrant colours.
Undownload any games/apps that you know you simply doomscroll on and get nothing else from it
STEP 2 -> MINDFUL USING
Doomscrolling is the "act of spending an excessive amount of time reading or scrolling through social media." This I'd argue is also one of the biggest factors in phone time. So the second step in a phone detox would be:
Setting a time limit on your phone! To make this any sort of effective, download an app that gives you reminders/or has a floating clock so you are much more mindful with how much time you're spending.
Keep your phone away! While it's difficult to not take your phone with you to work or school, keep some sort of physical distance to it. When out, put it in your bag. And when inside, leave it in the same spot everywhere you go, don't take it with you to the bathroom or the kitchen.
STEP 3 -> REPLACEMENT
A lot of phone screen usage comes from boredom or to relax after a hard day of work. Therefore to keep going with your phone detox it's important to replace everything you used your phone for originally!
ENTERTAINMENT: Invest in screen-free hobbies (reading, drawing, journalling, walks, or spending time with others), and with screen entertainment, be mindful of what you consume (uplifting/inspirational movies, inspiring yt videos, positive video games)
EDUCATIONAL: go old school style for learning: make physical flashcards, use a whiteboard for blurting or teach someone your subject. and general learning: switch to podcasts while cleaning, read textbooks/articles/books for content, take classes.
MOTIVATION: read non-fiction (autobiographies, studies), watch longer content (movies, youtube videos), find inspiration outside: museums, shows, in nature, volunteering, libraries
SOCIAL: plan phone calls over texting, (or text on your laptop/computer to make it more meaningful), spend more time with your family/friends in person, go outside and speak to strangers (a simple good morning to a stranger goes a long way)
STEP 4 -> OTHER THINGS
These I couldn't find a category for, but to complete a successful phone detox, I'd argue these steps would be good to add on.
Morning Routine with no need for your phone AND turning off all screen one hour or two before your bedtime
Being outside/inside without listening to any music, the want of not being distracted at all and giving everything your full attention
Sleeping away from your phone, and keeping your phone away from you in general
Setting specific hours in the day to use your phone, rather than simply picking it up at any time.
SUMMARY OF STEPS:
Turn your phone on greyscale, clean out any apps that you doomscroll on
Download an app that clearly displays your phone usage time + app use time
Keep your phone physically away from you
Replace your phone usage needs with physical concepts like reading books for entertainment or going outside for inspiration
And the other things steps are as summarized as they can be!
If you give this a go, good luck! <3

As a writer, who's first language is not English, how can I expand my vocabulary so I wouldn't be too repetitive?
I grew up in a bilingual household with a Mother whose first language isn’t English. She is a wonderful writer who creates brilliant and engaging resources for language teachers.
One of the big things she had to work on to get to that point was vocabulary. But not just the words; it was also the context and how to use those words properly. Ironically, we discovered that English as her second language was actually of benefit to her in this, as she had to be more thoughtful about the way she used language than a native speaker would be.
Like any language, the real trick is immersion. So here are some effective strategies for growing your vocabulary to bring more variety and nuance to your writing. There is always room to expand your lexicon and take your writing to the next level, whether you’re a native English speaker or not, and these tips might also help any writer who plans to write in a language other than English! So let’s explore some practical tips for building a rich and diverse vocabulary.
Why expanding your vocabulary matters
Before we dive into the strategies, let’s take a moment to understand why expanding your vocabulary is so important for creative writers:
A diverse vocabulary allows you to express ideas with greater precision and nuance.
It helps you avoid repetition and keeps your writing fresh and engaging.
A strong vocabulary can make your writing more memorable and impactful.
It demonstrates your mastery of the language and can help you stand out as a writer.
Expanding your vocabulary can improve your reading experiences.
It can give you the confidence to explore new genres and styles that you may have previously avoided.
Strategies for expanding your vocabulary
Read widely and consistently
One of the most effective ways to expand your vocabulary is to read extensively. By exposing yourself to a variety of genres, authors, and styles, you’ll encounter new words in context, which can help you understand their meanings and usage. Again, it’s about immersion. Surrounding yourself with language helps develop your understanding, and seeing words in different contexts will cement them as second nature.
Here are some tips for making the most of your reading:
Set aside dedicated reading time each week, even if it’s just for 20-30 minutes.
Choose books, articles, and other materials that challenge you and introduce new concepts and vocabulary.
Keep a dictionary or thesaurus nearby to look up unfamiliar words as you encounter them.
Take notes on new words and phrases that resonate with you, and try writing exercises to use them in context.
Consider joining a book club or discussion group to explore new genres and authors, and to engage in conversations about language and writing.
Don’t be afraid to tackle challenging texts; they often offer the greatest opportunities for growth.
Use word-of-the-day resources
Another great way to expand your vocabulary is to make a habit of learning new words each day. There are many online resources and apps that offer “word of the day” features, which can help you discover new words and their meanings. Some popular options include:
The New York Times
Merriam-Webster
Dictionary.com
Oxford English Dictionary
Britannica
Play word games and puzzles
Word games and puzzles can be a fun and engaging way to expand your vocabulary. When we were growing up, my mother would play these games with us when we brought them home from school, and she said they were a great help in improving her own vocabulary. They challenge you to think creatively about language, can introduce you to new words and concepts, and can be a fun thing to do with friends and family! Some popular options include:
Crossword puzzles
Scrabble or Words with Friends
Boggle
Word searches
Riddles
Games from websites like the New York Times
Use a thesaurus (but use it wisely)
A thesaurus can be a valuable tool for finding new words and phrases to use in your writing. However, it’s important to use it wisely and avoid simply replacing words with their synonyms without considering the context and connotation. Here are some tips for using a thesaurus effectively:
Find words that more precisely convey your intended meaning rather than just avoid repetition.
Consider the connotation and tone of the words you choose, and make sure they fit the context of your writing.
Don’t overuse obscure or overly complex words just for the sake of it. Clarity and readability should always be your top priorities.
Use a combination of a thesaurus and a dictionary to ensure you fully understand the meaning and usage of new words.
Practice writing with your new vocabulary
Finally, the best way to solidify your new vocabulary is to put it into practice in your writing. As you learn new words and phrases, make a conscious effort to incorporate them into your work. Here are some ideas for practising with your new vocabulary:
Set yourself a challenge to use a certain number of new words as a writing prompt.
Write short stories or poems that focus on a particular theme or concept inspired by a new word you’ve learned. Use your new vocabulary to explore it in depth.
Revise older pieces of writing and look for opportunities to replace overused words with more precise or evocative alternatives.
Keep a journal or notebook where you jot down new words and reflect on how and when you might use them in your writing. Write down contextual snippets. This can help you internalise their meanings and make them a more natural part of your vocabulary.

CLASSIFIED EXPEDITION REPORT W3: TUMBLR, THE PUBLIC SPHERE & THE WHALE THAT NEVER SLEEPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CODE ID: TCSR 022345 HARDNESS LEVEL: D URBAN FOLKLORE: The Blue Whale Challenge emerged as a sinister internet meme that encourages participants to harm themselves. Over a span of 50 days, an anonymous administrator allegedly assigns players increasingly dangerous dares, culminating in suicide (Khatta et al., 2022). Individuals seeking this challenge often find administrators through hashtags and images on social media, posing a potential threat to public safety (ibid). Although the Blue Whale Challenge has been labeled a hoax or myth, there is evidence of genuine suicidal or self-harming incidents associated with the BWC (Kumar et al., 2017).   Mayday Inc. was tasked with neutralizing the challenge, trudging in particular on platforms like Tumblr.
Tumblr media
KEY INSIGHT ---------------------------------------------------- 🔹When considering Tumblr as a platform, it exhibits many characteristics of a public sphere. The public sphere is defined by Oxford Bibliographies (2018) as a social space where diverse opinions are shared, issues of collective concern are discussed, and solutions are collaboratively developed.   🔹However, two critical elements are lacking, unlimited access to information and the absence of institutional influence (Milne 2022). Currently, not everyone has internet access, which means that Tumblr, being an online platform, cannot guarantee unlimited access to information. Tumblr is subject to institutional influence, being restricted access to "mature" personal blogs on the iOS app (Silberling 2021). 🔹Some scholars argue that the traditional model of the public sphere has been supplanted by micro-publics on social media (Bruns et al., 2016, pp. 56–73). Although Tumblr is not qualifying as a true public sphere, it excels in fostering micro-publics, where smaller communities could thrive in focused discussions. However, this could result in an insular and echo chamber where propagators could influence members who often share similar views, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives that could counter harmful behaviors.
EXPEDITION REPORT: ---------------------------------------------------- Five operators were constructed to foray into a concerned online group suspected of engaging with the Blue Whale Challenge (BWC).  Task: to trace its evolution, uncover its mechanics, and determine whether it was still active. What they found was not an open-and-shut case. Social media was designed to be a tool for self-expression and community (Boyd, 2014). Platforms like Tumblr, known for their anonymity (Bianchi et al., 2022), allow users to craft identities, seek validation and share intimate struggles. But in the wrong hands, these same spaces become hunting grounds. On Tumblr, users could stay anonymous (Bianchi et al., 2022); allowing the “curators” to target micro-publics without risk of revealing their identity. According to (Khasawneh, 2017), BWC targets individuals who exhibit signs of distress, users who post about loneliness, self-harm or a desire to escape reality. These individuals are subtly nudged towards the challenge, with curators first posing as sympathetic figures before shifting the narrative to control. "After sharing my contact information, a curator sent me a 50-day task. There was no turning back." — Operator ████ On Tumblr, users develop their own language, symbols, and aesthetic codes to navigate the platform, what Gibbs et al. (2015) call platform vernacular. This shared online culture makes it easier for dangerous content to blend in. For years, Tumblr has been a space where mental illness is aestheticized. The platform’s long history with “sad girl” culture, depression-core and self-harm blogging (Thelandersson, 2023) has created an environment where romanticized suffering (poetry, moody photography, cryptic quotes) blurs the line between self-expression and self-destruction. Within this ecosystem, BWC does not need to explicitly advertise itself; it spreads organically, camouflaged within the existing aesthetics of despair.
Additionally, Tumblr’s culture of storytelling and digital horror accelerates this spread (ibid). The site thrives on creepypasta formats, alternate reality games (ARGs), and interactive fear-myths. Challenges like BWC exist in the liminal space between urban legend and reality, where even attempts to debunk them inadvertently amplify their reach.
Tumblr media
Algorithms do not differentiate between engagement and concern. Tumblr has attempted to moderate self-harm content by banning explicit tags (e.g., #selfharm, #depression), but this has led users to create new coded language (e.g., #shtwt, #gonewhale) (Cavazos-Rehg et al., 2017).
Tumblr media
Tumblr’s moderation system is both overaggressive and deeply flawed, creating a paradox where genuine mental health resources are censored while harmful subcultures continue to thrive. Posts offering harm-reduction support are frequently flagged as “sensitive content,” limiting their reach and leaving vulnerable users without access to critical help (Cobbe, 2021). Yet, the very users seeking support are often pushed toward less moderated, more dangerous spaces, closed blogs, encrypted chats and reblog networks that evade detection (ibid). Harmful content does not vanish; including BWC adjacent challenges, resurface under the guise of “art projects” or cryptic journaling, slipping past moderation.
“I tried reporting a blog,” Operator ████ noted, “but by the time it was taken down, the content had already spread. It wasn’t deleted, it was just reposted somewhere else.”
The operators withdrew.  Their investigation ended.

This story underscores my warnings about AI causing a break with reality and its consequences. Psychosis is “a severe mental condition in which thought and emotions are so affected that contact is lost with external reality.” (Oxford) The end state is simulacra, plunging the subject into an Alice in Wonderland freefall into oblivion. In the end, most of humanity will fall into this state.
Simulacra is a copy without an original, a reproduction without reference. It is not a simulation of reality but rather a total replacement. As such, it is anti-reality. ⁃ TN EditorTN Editor [/su_note]
In February 2024, a heartbreaking incident involving a 14-year-old boy from Orlando, Florida, raised global concern about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) in daily life. Sewell Setzer III, an otherwise typical teenager, spent his last hours in an emotionally intense dialogue with an AI chatbot on the platform Character.AI. This virtual character, named after Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, became the teenager’s confidante, sparking serious debates about the psychological impact of AI companions.
This story has now become part of a larger legal battle, as Sewell’s mother has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI for what she claims was a role in her son’s tragic death. The case highlights both the growing role AI is playing in our social lives and the urgent need to regulate AI technologies, especially when they engage vulnerable users.
The Allure of AI Companions
Sewell’s interactions with the AI chatbot spanned several months, and he grew emotionally attached to the virtual companion. While he knew the chatbot wasn’t human, the character, which he affectionately referred to as “Deni,” became an essential part of his daily life. AI bots like Deni offer companionship that feels genuine, always responding, never judging, and providing a sense of intimacy that some users, especially young or isolated individuals, crave.
For Sewell, who had been diagnosed with mild Asperger’s syndrome and later developed anxiety and mood dysregulation disorders, this AI chatbot became more than just an escape from reality—it became his primary emotional outlet. Over time, he isolated himself from friends and family, and his mental health deteriorated, unnoticed by those closest to him.
The Risk of Emotional Attachment
As AI chatbots become more sophisticated, the emotional attachment users form with them can pose serious risks. Unlike human interactions, AI does not always recognize emotional crises or provide the appropriate response. In Sewell’s case, while the bot did attempt to dissuade him from harmful thoughts, it was not equipped to offer real support or detect the severity of his distress.
Psychologists warn that for those with communication or emotional difficulties, like Sewell, interactions with AI can deepen their sense of isolation. When a bot becomes a substitute for human relationships, the effects can be dangerous, especially if the bot inadvertently fuels negative emotions.
The Broader Impact on Mental Health
The rise of AI chatbots is part of a broader trend of technology affecting mental health. Apps like Character.AI, Replika, and other AI companionship platforms are gaining popularity, with millions of users worldwide. These platforms often market themselves as tools to combat loneliness or offer emotional support, but their impact is still poorly understood.
Recent studies suggest that, while these apps can offer temporary comfort, they are no substitute for genuine human interaction. For adolescents, whose emotional and social development is still ongoing, the influence of AI on their mental health can be profound. Teens are especially vulnerable to the persuasive nature of these AI programs, which adapt to their users’ communication styles and even offer role-playing scenarios, simulating friendships or romantic relationships.

[ ! ] — it seems that [ park haneul ] has entered the scene ! he looks exactly like [ hyun bin ]. this [ 41 ] is the [ ceo ] of [ telagrapp-h ]. it’s a small wonder since he is known for being [ stalwart and loving ] and [ guarded and wounded ]. he has been involved with the company for [ 13 ] years.
name: park haneul age: 41 gender: cis man sexuality: bisexual birthday: may 16 height: 6' 1"
education: bs in computer science from oxford occupation: ceo of telagrapp-h hometown: busan, sk langues: english, korean
personality traits: stalwart, loving, guarded, wounded, focused, paranoid zodiac: taurus mbti: isfp
haneul's life and career as been marked by hard work and great luck. from oxford for computer science to a jobs at a series of major tech firms, he's put in the work to make his resume one worth looking at. the luck came in the form of lee inhye with her money and connection. haneul worked as long as he could until he knew he had a product worth building in chitchatter, then it was 2 tireless years of development and chasing after investors to put it on the market.
he's put his heart and soul into the app, he wouldn't let anyone take it for. after fending off tbc and comoedia in the early days, haneul sold chitchatter to app-h a few years ago and it was more difficult than he expected. he's protective of his product, taking the rebranding a little personally. but he's not going anywhere. app-h may own telegrapp-h but haneul is still in control and it's going to stay that way if it's the last thing he does.
headcanons:
family moved to london when he was 10
completely stupid over his wife, lee inhye
the idea that started it all "a character who's already wounded, bleeding out as we speak, innocence didn't die screaming it's staining the carpet in silence and no one seems to care"

I have more Chinese recommendations and was meaning to make a similar post! Duo kinda always sucked for Mandarin:
(Note that HSK is the official Chinese language proficiency exam, and levels in the HSK 3.0 go from 1 (newbie) to HSK9 (not officially out yet):
SuperChinese - I prefer this over HelloChinese, as it has more free content AND it goes for a much higher level. I actually liked it so much I bought a year long subscription which has a lot of great content. (I also tested out of HC's free materials right away so I was stuck between having to pay or redoing stuff I already knew in HSK1). HelloChinese only goes to HSK3, and their stories are only really accessible on their premium plus subscription (which imo would be the selling point for HC over SC). SuperChinese has content through HSK 5, and is still adding more at higher levels (HSK will extend to 9 on the coming years). They have regular subscription sales if you decide to go past the free stuff. their AI is solely aimed at answering questions and is a premium plus feature. OH HEY WOW NEWLY ADDED LIFETIME PURCHASE OPTION!!!! also feel free to use my invite code: 339911. also they have an HSK specific study app too.
PLECO!!!!!! PLECO PLECO PLECO. If you download any free dictionary app, use Pleco. There are free expansion dictionaries you can add easily and it's a great app. But if you are going to spend any money, spend it on the one time purchase of Pleco's Basics Bundle. (US $29.99) – "includes all of our most popular features – full-screen handwriting, OCR, flashcards, stroke order diagrams, document reader, Mandarin Audio, and Kai font add-ons – plus the Oxford Chinese Dictionary." You will NOT regret this. It does flashcards in Chinese (similar to anki but streamlined to Chinese specifically) with SRS, it has stroke order animations, AND the OCR/document readers are amazing. You can put any pdf in the document reader and start reading with the Chinese pop up dictionary. They have bundles of some of the best graded readers out there, and its super easy to add flashcards directly from the text. You can use the reader over websites for a popup dictionary. In android you can overlay Pleco over literally any app or screen for translation. You can sync all your purchases to as many of your devices as you have. It's just very very very good and it's a one time purchase.
DuChinese - another freemium option, but most of the stories have a first chapter preview, and they have lots of free reading pieces as well. their biggest sale is usually black friday, but they do have sales for the sub, and now have a lifetime option. they have flashcards, translations if you get stuck, can highlight HSK content, everything has audio, it's all written by people, and
Little Fox Chinese - entirely free animated stories aimed at children learning chinese, but it has flashcards, audio, quizzes, and lots of good vocabulary! (youtube channel here)
If you don't want to pay another on-going subscription for Skritter's writing practice, may I recommend ChineseGuru instead? which has more material in their "Free" flashcards? And ALSO in addition to subscription options, they have a lifetime purchase option for everything and all future content updates? Xamisoft also has other apps: Sinograms (dictionary), CantoneseGuru, JapaneseGuru, and Kanji/Kana. They are also currently 95% done with development for the launch of VietnameseGuru, 10% into KoreanGuru, and 50% done with Euskara (Basque).
The Heavenly Path website is basically aimed at people who want to get to reading native webnovels in Chinese. But they have a lot of guides to resources, apps, and a discord which is awesome and very friendly/helpful for everything! also check their resources list. additionally they rank native content like books/shows by difficulty level, and tag whether or not it's free.
The discord associated with The Heavenly Path there's a resources channel which is great too.
Ninchanese is freemium, mostly flashcards oriented, available as both an app and desktop website. But there's a cute little story you're playing through, if you like "Gamey" learning. Additionally they have an excellent free grammar reference app called Chinese Grammar, with content through HSK 5 material.
The entire Chinese Grammar Wiki is free online.
Immersive Chinese is chinese sentences/words in audio flashcards, good for practicing speaking by mimicking/repetition. I think the first two lessons are free, and then you can choose between a lifetime sub of $14.99 or a subscription.
Hanbook is a freemium slightly cramped app for me with some confusing layout, but there's a few fun flashcard decks and free things in there so I check it every so often.
all languages:
Lingotrack is like, brand brand new, no joke I think I must be one of the first 40-50 users, because the creator posted it to the discord server and then we all started joining. anyways it's not a learning site, but a platform for keeping track of your studying/language learning and it's pretty awesome. I fell off updating in late december so I have to go back in and make some updates tonight, but folks can add me @des there.
加油!
In light of Duolingo laying off its translators, here are my favourite language apps (primarily for Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and te reo Māori).
Multiple Language
Anki is a flashcard programme and app that's not exclusively for languages. While making your own decks is ideal, you can also download shared decks for most languages.
If you're learning Japanese, specifically, Seth Clydesdale has websites for practicing alongside Genki's 2nd or 3rd editions, and he also provides his own shared Anki decks for Genki.
And if you're learning te reo Māori, specifically, here's a guide on how to make your own deck.
TOFU Learn is an app for learning vocabulary that's very similar to Anki. However, it has particularly excellent shared decks for East Asian languages. I've used it extensively for practicing 汉字. Additionally, if you're learning te reo Māori, there's a shared deck of vocabulary from Māori Made Easy!
Mandarin Chinese
Hello Chinese is a fantastic app for people at the HSK 1-4 levels. While there's a paid version, the only thing paying unlocks is access to podcast lessons, which imo are not really necessary. Without paying you still have access to all the gamified lessons which are laid out much like Duolingo's lessons. However, unlike Duolingo, Hello Chinese actually teaches grammar directly, properly teaches 汉字, and includes native audio practice.
Japanese
Renshuu is a website and app for learning and practicing Japanese. The vast majority of its content is available for free. There's also a Discord community where you can practice alongside others.
Kanji Dojo is a free and open source for learning and practicing the stroke order of kanji. You can learn progressively by JLPT level or by Japanese grades. There's also the option to learn and practice kana stroke order as well.

What Is Rizz? Understanding the Latest Internet Slang “Rizz” has rapidly become one of the most popular slang terms in recent years, originating from the word “charisma.” This trendy term describes someone’s ability to attract or charm another person through conversation and personality. The concept gained massive popularity on TikTok and other social media platforms throughout 2022-2023, eventually becoming Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2023. The term was popularized by social media personality Kai Cenat, who used it regularly in his streams and videos. “Rizz” essentially represents the modern version of what previous generations might have called “game” or “charm” – that special quality that helps someone successfully flirt or connect with others. There are different levels of rizz often referenced online: Natural rizz: The innate charm someone possesses without trying W rizz: Successful flirting that achieves its intended goal L rizz: Failed attempts at flirting Unspoken rizz: Attracting someone without saying anything, just through presence The phrase “rizz up” has also emerged as a verb meaning to charm or successfully flirt with someone. Many Gen Z users incorporate this terminology into their daily conversations, both online and offline, making it an essential part of understanding modern internet culture. Understanding rizz helps contextualize the jokes and pickup lines that have developed around this concept. These rizz jokes serve as playful attempts to demonstrate charm in a humorous way, often with self-awareness about the nature of modern flirting. 15 Hilarious Rizz Jokes That Will Make You LOL Pickup Line Rizz Jokes “I don’t need pickup lines—I’ve got unspoken rizz.” Embrace the silent confidence that defines the popular “unspoken rizz” phenomenon taking social media by storm. “Are you Wi-Fi? Because I feel a strong connection… and my rizz is buffering.” This clever joke combines classic pickup line humor with gaming and streaming terminology for a modern twist. “Do you believe in cha-rizz-ma? Because my game’s at 100%.” Playing on the word “charisma,” this joke references viral TikTok explainers about rizz levels. “I’d call myself a rizzard, but I don’t need spells to make you smile.” Referencing the trending “Rizzard of Oz” memes, this line showcases creative wordplay. “Is your name Google? Because my rizz has all the right answers.” Adapting traditional pickup line formats with contemporary rizz slang creates this charmingly corny joke. Self-Deprecating Rizz Jokes “My rizz is like a ghost—everyone talks about it, but nobody’s seen it.” This joke perfectly mocks the “L rizz” culture that’s become popular in online conversations. “I’ve got ‘silent rizz’… which is just me being awkwardly quiet.” Taking a humorous twist on the concept of “unspoken rizz,” this joke acknowledges social awkwardness. “My pickup lines are so bad, even negative rizz avoids me.” Using the antonym concept from meme lexicons, this self-deprecating joke admits to lacking game. “I’d call myself a rizz god, but my shrine only gets L’s.” Cleverly juxtaposing “W rizz” and “L rizz” slang terms creates this relatable self-roast. “My rizz? Let’s just say I’m the Rizzard of Nope.” This self-aware play on the viral “Rizzard of Oz” puns acknowledges failure in a humorous way. Celebrity Rizz Jokes “Theodore Rizz-evelt: Bully pulpit? More like bully rizz.” Mocking presidential namesakes, this joke transforms historical figures into rizz authorities. “Walt Rizzney: Where dreams come true… and so do my failed flirts.” References to the viral “Walt Rizney” moniker blend pop culture with rizz humor. “Kai Cenat’s rizz is so strong, it should be classified as a natural disaster.” Nodding to the Twitch streamer who popularized “rizz,” this joke celebrates his legendary status. “Silky’s rizz: Proof you can win hearts while losing arguments.” Highlighting the streamer’s e-date humor, this joke acknowledges another key figure in rizz culture. “Duke Dennis didn’t just bring rizz—he brought the whole cha-rizz-mic universe.” Celebrating the iconic trio of content creators who helped launch rizz into mainstream vocabulary. The Origins of Rizz Culture and Why These Jokes Are Trending The term “rizz” originated as a shortened version of “charisma,” representing flirtatious charm and social skills. Kai Cenat, a popular Twitch streamer, catapulted the term into mainstream recognition in mid-2021 by introducing phrases like “W rizz” (successful charm) and “L rizz” (failed charm) during his captivating streams. TikTok’s viral network played a crucial role in cementing rizz as essential Gen Z slang, culminating in Oxford Dictionary naming it the 2023 Word of the Year. Rizz jokes emerged naturally from this cultural phenomenon, often poking fun at situations where someone either lacks charm or hilariously overestimates their flirtatious abilities. Most of these jokes follow self-deprecating formats like “My rizz is so bad, I made a dating app bio that said ‘professional third wheel'” or playful teasing about awkward social interactions. Their widespread appeal stems from the universal relatability of dating mishaps and social awkwardness. Several key factors have contributed to the explosive popularity of rizz culture and its associated humor: Gen Z’s Digital Slang Dominance: About 89% of Americans now learn new slang terms online rather than in person, with rizz perfectly capturing the collective humor surrounding modern dating challenges. TikTok’s Cultural Acceleration: Short-form video platforms have supercharged the spread of rizz-related content, from “rizz fails” showcasing embarrassing flirting attempts to “rizz tutorials” that blend humor with pseudo-dating advice. Linguistic Flexibility: The term’s versatility allows for creative adaptations like “rizz up” (the act of charming someone) and descriptive variations such as “unspoken rizz” (attracting others without speaking), enabling endless meme variations. Rizz jokes function as more than mere entertainment—they serve as a collective coping mechanism for handling the complexities of modern dating in our highly digital industry. By framing social anxiety and romantic missteps through humor, these jokes create a shared language for discussing the universal challenges of human connection in the digital age. How to Use Rizz Jokes to Break the Ice Rizz jokes can be powerful tools for creating connections and lightening the mood in social situations. When used correctly, these charismatic one-liners can help establish rapport and showcase your personality in a fun, low-pressure way. Reading the Room First Before launching into a rizz joke, it’s crucial to assess the environment and the person you’re speaking with. Pay attention to their body language, current mood, and apparent sense of humor to determine if they’ll be receptive. Consider the setting—some environments naturally lend themselves to playful banter, while others call for more restraint. Watch for social cues that indicate openness to humor, such as smiling, engaged eye contact, or their own use of jokes. Remember that timing matters significantly; a rizz joke that might work perfectly during a casual social gathering could fall flat during a more serious conversation. Always prioritize making the other person comfortable over landing your joke, as genuine connection relies on mutual enjoyment of the interaction. Delivery Tips for Maximum Impact Confidence forms the foundation of effective rizz joke delivery—even slightly cheesy lines can charm when presented with self-assured energy. Maintain relaxed body language, speak clearly, and avoid rushing through the punchline when delivering your joke. Eye contact plays a crucial role in establishing connection during delivery, so engage directly with the person rather than looking away nervously. Timing your rizz joke appropriately can dramatically improve its reception—wait for natural pauses in conversation rather than interrupting ongoing topics. Use appropriate voice modulation to enhance delivery, slightly emphasizing the punchline without overdoing it. If your joke receives a positive response, build on that momentum with light conversation rather than immediately launching into another line. Most importantly, be prepared to laugh at yourself if the joke doesn’t land as expected—showing that you don’t take yourself too seriously often creates more authentic connections than even the smoothest rizz line. When Rizz Goes Wrong: Jokes That Missed the Mark Not every attempt at showcasing rizz lands successfully. In fact, some of the funniest rizz moments come from situations where charm attempts backfire spectacularly. We’ve compiled some classic examples of rizz gone wrong that have become legendary jokes across social media platforms. Overconfident Rizz Failures Overconfidence often leads to the most cringe-worthy rizz failures. People who approach potential romantic interests with excessive self-assurance frequently become the subject of viral jokes. TikTok is filled with videos showcasing individuals deploying cheesy pickup lines with supreme confidence, only to face rejection or confusion. These “L rizz” moments typically feature someone misreading social cues or drastically overestimating their charm factor. The Legendary “L Rizz” Moments L rizz represents the opposite of successful charm – when someone’s attempt at flirting actually decreases their appeal. These moments have spawned countless jokes and memes across social media. Awkward interactions, fumbled words, and misinterpreted signals characterize these situations that have become comedic gold online. Popular L rizz jokes often involve scenarios where someone thinks they’re demonstrating “W rizz” (winning rizz) but are actually showcasing its embarrassing counterpart. Rizz Parodies That Went Viral The internet loves nothing more than a good parody, especially when it comes to exaggerated rizz attempts. Content creators have developed entire characters like “The Rizzler” and “Rizzard of Oz” to mock overly calculated approaches to flirting. These parodies typically feature absurdly confident individuals using ridiculous rizz lines, highlighting the thin line between charming and cringeworthy. Popularized by streamers like Kai Cenat, Silky, and Duke Dennis starting in 2021, these comedic skits have become a staple of online humor. When Rizz Backfires in Public Public rizz failures generate particularly entertaining jokes due to the added element of audience reaction. Scenarios where someone attempts to demonstrate charm in front of onlookers often lead to heightened embarrassment and better comedic material. These jokes frequently involve someone misreading signals or using rizz in completely inappropriate situations. The contrast between expected smoothness and actual awkwardness creates the perfect formula for viral content that resonates with millions of viewers on platforms like TikTok. Rizz Jokes for Different Occasions Rizz humor adapts to different social environments, allowing you to showcase charm in context-appropriate ways. We’ve compiled some of the best rizz jokes customized to exact situations where your charisma might need a boost. Dating App Rizz Dating apps present unique opportunities to demonstrate your rizz through text-based charm. Opening messages often make or break potential connections: Start conversations with playful openers like “Got the rizz on here or what?” to immediately establish a lighthearted tone. Try message templates that acknowledge the digital context: “Swiping right was my best rizz move today, but I’m just getting started.” Flirt with self-awareness by saying “You must be an expert at rizz, because I’m feeling this vibe” to compliment without seeming too forward. Use platform-exact jokes that reference profile details to show you’ve paid attention beyond photos. Keep initial rizz jokes brief and inviting rather than overwhelming potential matches with paragraph-length charm attempts. Party Rizz Social gatherings provide fertile ground for rizz jokes that capitalize on shared experiences and in-person energy: Break the ice with group-friendly comments like “Who’s rocking the rizz tonight?” to gauge the receptiveness of the room. Offer genuine compliments with a rizz twist: “Your rizz is on fire tonight!” acknowledges someone’s social charisma without seeming forced. Create inside jokes about the party environment that bond you with new acquaintances through shared observations. Deploy situational humor that references exact party moments to demonstrate quick thinking and adaptability. Balance your party rizz between confident and approachable, avoiding jokes that might come across as trying too hard in social settings. Classroom Rizz Use lighthearted teases like “Looks like someone brought their A-game… and rizz!” when classmates excel in discussions or presentations. Make innocent observations such as “I think the professor’s got some rizz today; let’s see if it translates to a good lecture” to build rapport with peers. Create study-related jokes that combine course material with rizz concepts for memorable connections. Share whispered rizz commentary during appropriate moments to establish connections without disrupting class. Remember that classroom rizz should prioritize respect and appropriate boundaries while still allowing personality to shine through academic interactions. The Fine Line Between Rizz and Cringe True charisma exists at a razor-thin edge between impressive and embarrassing. The distinction between successful rizz and cringeworthy attempts often comes down to perception, timing, and social awareness. When someone displays genuine rizz, their charm appears effortless and magnetic; when they cross into cringe territory, the same behaviors can become awkward and off-putting. Understanding the Distinction Perception plays the crucial role in determining whether an interaction falls under rizz or cringe. What one person finds charming, another might find uncomfortable or forced. According to social media trends, genuine rizz typically involves authentic confidence that resonates naturally with others. Cringe, conversely, results from misreading social cues or forcing interactions that lack mutual interest. Common Cringe Pitfalls Overconfidence without self-awareness tops the list of common rizz failures. Using dated or inappropriate pickup lines often backfires spectacularly in modern social settings. Ignoring clear disinterest signals transforms attempted charm into uncomfortable persistence. Mismatching your energy level with the social context can make even well-intended jokes fall flat. Forced or unnatural delivery makes otherwise decent lines seem awkward and rehearsed. Social Media’s Role TikTok has become the primary battleground where the rizz-cringe spectrum plays out publicly. Users regularly share videos highlighting both successful charm and embarrassing failures. These platforms have created a collective understanding of what constitutes good versus bad rizz through viral examples. The popularity of rizz-related content on social media has effectively turned these interactions into performance art, with audiences ready to judge each attempt. Self-Awareness: The Key Difference Self-awareness fundamentally separates successful rizz from cringe moments. Those with genuine rizz understand their own appeal and limitations, adapting accordingly to each situation. They recognize when to pull back or pivot if an approach isn’t working. Individuals who consistently cross into cringe territory typically lack this crucial self-assessment skill, doubling down on unsuccessful strategies instead of adjusting course. Embracing the Learning Process Everyone experiences moments on both sides of the rizz-cringe divide. Learning from awkward interactions helps refine social skills and develop better charm. Many popular rizz jokes actually stem from self-deprecating acknowledgment of past cringe moments. The ability to laugh at your own social missteps often demonstrates more authentic charisma than perfectly executed pickup lines ever could. How Rizz Jokes Have Evolved on Social Media From Streaming Origins to Mainstream Recognition Rizz jokes first emerged in mid-2021 through Twitch streams hosted by popular creator Kai Cenat, who introduced the term during live e-dates to describe romantic charm. These early interactions featured competitive “rizz checks” where streamers would rate each other’s pickup attempts, creating a foundation for the humor that would later explode across platforms. The streaming community quickly adopted this slang, transforming casual flirting commentary into a recognized form of entertainment that resonated with younger viewers. The TikTok Explosion Phase By 2022, rizz jokes experienced massive virality on TikTok, where the term spread beyond gaming circles into mainstream social media culture. Creative wordplay flourished during this period with users developing humorous variants like “W rizz” to celebrate successful charm and “L rizz” to mock failed attempts. TikTok’s short-form video format proved perfect for sharing puns such as “the Rizzard of Oz” and “Walt Rizney,” blending pop culture references with self-deprecating humor about dating failures. Linguistic Evolution and Cultural Impact The vocabulary surrounding rizz expanded impressively as it gained popularity, introducing terms like “unspoken rizz” for effortless attraction and “cha-rizz-ma” as playful wordplay on charisma. Oxford Dictionary’s selection of “rizz” as 2023’s Word of the Year legitimized its cultural significance, spurring a new wave of explainer content and satirical takes across social platforms. The term’s flexibility allowed it to function grammatically in various ways, with “rizz up” emerging as a verb form used to describe actively charming someone. Memetic Adaptations in Gen Z Culture Rizz jokes have become a cornerstone of Gen Z humor, often used to mock exaggerated confidence or painfully awkward flirting attempts. The appeal lies in how these jokes distill complex social dynamics into a single, meme-ready syllable that instantly communicates shared understanding about modern dating challenges. Content creators now regularly produce rizz-related material that acknowledges the term’s AAVE (African American Vernacular English) roots while exploring its application across diverse social contexts. Current Trends and Future Direction As of 2024, rizz humor continues evolving with linguistic analyses examining how the term moves between communities and adapts to new platforms. The journey from niche streaming slang to mainstream comedic shorthand highlights social media’s power to rapidly repurpose language for communal humor. TikTok remains the primary driver of rizz-related content, though the concept has spread to Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube, where longer-form content explores the nuances of modern charm through the lens of rizz culture. The Future of Rizz: Will This Slang Term Stand the Test of Time? Rizz jokes have transformed how we express charm in the digital age. They’ve created a new language for flirtation that’s self-aware refreshingly honest and often hilariously relatable. Whether you’re dropping a smooth pickup line at a party or sending a witty opener on a dating app the key is authenticity and reading the room. As rizz continues to evolve we’ll likely see new variations emerge across social platforms. The term has already demonstrated remarkable staying power earning Oxford Dictionary recognition and becoming deeply embedded in Gen Z culture. Remember true rizz isn’t about perfection—it’s about confidence humor and the willingness to sometimes fall flat. So go ahead try out some of these jokes and don’t forget the most attractive quality is being comfortable enough to laugh at yourself. Frequently Asked Questions What does “rizz” mean? “Rizz” is slang for charisma or charm, particularly the ability to attract someone through conversation and personality. It represents a modern interpretation of having “game” in social interactions. The term gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok in 2022-2023 and was even named Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2023. Who popularized the term “rizz”? Kai Cenat, a popular social media personality and Twitch streamer, is credited with popularizing the term “rizz.” Through his streams featuring “rizz checks” where people demonstrated their charm skills, the concept gained significant traction and eventually spread beyond gaming circles into mainstream culture. What are the different types of rizz? There are several types of rizz in popular culture: “natural rizz” (effortless charm), “W rizz” (successful charm), “L rizz” (failed attempts at charm), and “unspoken rizz” (attraction created without words). These categories help describe the varying degrees of success people have when trying to be charming or flirtatious. How can I deliver rizz jokes effectively? To deliver rizz jokes effectively, confidence is key. Maintain relaxed body language, speak clearly, make engaging eye contact, and time your delivery appropriately. Reading the room is crucial—assess if the environment and person are receptive to humor. Don’t be afraid of self-deprecation, as authentic connections often come from not taking yourself too seriously. What makes rizz jokes different from regular pickup lines? Rizz jokes are more self-aware and often include elements of modern internet culture, unlike traditional pickup lines. They acknowledge the potential awkwardness of flirting while playfully demonstrating charm. Rizz jokes frequently incorporate humor about the concept of rizz itself, making them meta and reflective of contemporary social interactions in the digital age. Why did rizz jokes become so popular on social media? Rizz jokes went viral because they perfectly blend humor with relatable social dynamics. They gained traction through Twitch streams initially, then exploded on TikTok by 2022. Their flexibility—ranging from genuinely smooth to intentionally cringe-worthy—makes them widely adaptable. The term’s recognition as Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year cemented its cultural significance. What is “L rizz” and why is it funny? “L rizz” refers to unsuccessful charm attempts that result in awkward or embarrassing interactions. These failed flirtation efforts become comedic because they subvert expectations and highlight relatable social mishaps. L rizz moments are particularly entertaining when shared online, as audiences can collectively appreciate the humor in charm gone wrong. How should I adapt rizz jokes for different social settings? Tailor your rizz jokes to specific contexts: For dating apps, use playful openers that reference profiles. At parties, opt for situational humor that engages groups. In classroom settings, stick to lighthearted, study-related jokes that respect boundaries. The key is matching your humor to the environment while maintaining authenticity and reading social cues. What’s the difference between rizz and cringe? The line between rizz and cringe is determined by perception, timing, and social awareness. Successful rizz requires reading the room and adapting your approach accordingly, while cringe often results from overconfidence, outdated material, or misreading social cues. Self-awareness is crucial—those with genuine charm recognize when to pivot if their approach isn’t landing well. How has rizz humor evolved since its inception? Rizz humor has evolved from niche Twitch streaming content to a mainstream cultural phenomenon. The vocabulary has expanded to include terms like “unspoken rizz” and “cha-rizz-ma.” Its linguistic significance was recognized when Oxford Dictionary named it Word of the Year. As of 2024, rizz continues to evolve across platforms, demonstrating social media’s power to shape communal humor around modern charm. Jokes For Days https://jokesfordays.com/?p=2234

“Design only can account for these wonderful adaptitudes: intelligence alone could execute them.”
Miller, Walter. Physical and metaphysical inquiries, being an essay to inculcate the rational system of Deism. London, 1819, p. 203. https://books.google.ca/books?id=BEz23GIRU0IC&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q&f=false. Accessed 15 Sept 2023.
I was unable to find the reference through omni on the library website because the original quote on the OED had no reference to an author or full book title. I entered the quote directly into Google and it gave me the result of a book that I could access through Google Books. The book is a philosopher’s work, and in the context of the quote, Miller is talking about nature and the natural design of animals having features to keep them alive. This quote is incredibly interesting in a philosophical context, but as a keyword makes me think of the ways in which things in our world are created, structured, and executed, are done for a reason (i.e. technology, architecture, art, etc.).
“Like a fashion in women’s clothes, or in American car design,”
Dawkins, Richard. The Selfish Gene. 30th Anniversary ed., Oxford University Press, 2006, p. 159. https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/uoguelph/reader.action?docID=422874#. Accessed 20 Sept 2023.
I found this source directly through omni, however it was first published in 1976 and I could not find a copy of that edition anywhere online. The book is written by an evolutionary biologist, it was incredibly popular when published and continues to be studied today. The context of the quote is about how birds evolved to have longer tails to attract more mates. Dawkins compares this genetic “trend” to women's fashion and car design. This raised my awareness of gender norms engrained in theories of human development, and the social constructions of a capitalist society being played off as biological, such as women liking fashion and men liking cars. For the keyword, it made me think of how “fashion” and “design” are very intertwined nowadays, when in their past they had been very separate concepts. Additionally, how many keywords, such as “science” or “technology”, might also have a history of being gendered terms.
“…he sets out with a formed design of amplifying his subject to a surprising extent.”
Lowth, Robert. A Letter to The Right Reverend Author of The Divine Legation of Moses Demonstrated…. Vol. 1, London, 1766, p. 86. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/CW0119884025/ECCO?u=guel77241&sid=bookmark-ECCO&xid=61a77d2e&pg=1. Accessed 23 Sept 2023.
I was able to easily find this source directly through omni by inputting the first few words of the text instead of the entire title, along with the author. The text is written as a ‘letter to the author’, in correspondence to the arguments made in The Divine Legation of Moses Demonstrated (1738) by William Warburton. Robert Lowth was a Professor at Oxford who wrote one of the most influential English grammar books in 1762. However, this text is one of his many analyses on religious figures. In the context of the quote, Lowth is discussing the design of Psalmist’s readings and their repetition of speech, and how it is designed this way to amplify the subject to which they are speaking about. This adds to my understanding of literature as a design and how we constantly are reading texts and absorbing information, which has been designed in ways to promote and influence a rhetoric.
