This is a first part of my “We Can’t Go Back” any feedback is welcomed 😀

Prologue

Caitlyn slowly walked down the hospital corridor, peered into the room, and saw Bronco kneeling at the foot of the bed, looking completely exhausted. He left the room to retrieve the flowers, put them in a nearby vase, and then stepped into the hall.

“How is she,” Caitlyn asked quietly as soon as they were out of hearing.

“They don’t know if she’ll see if she’ll walk. They don’t know anything. Bronco sniffled back tears “ I never should have made her go with him,” he said heavily as Caitlyn pulled him in for a hug. I wish I didn’t have that fight with Lucy…

Can I go see her?” Bronco nodded. Caitlyn was shocked by what she saw. They hooked Lucy up to monitors covered in bandages, and had what looked like tart tins in her eyes.

“Luce” Caitlyn stepped closer to the bed.

Caitlyn” Lucy answered back weakly and reached out to grab Caitlyn’s hand. Everyone kept saying she was lucky to survive that crash, but she didn’t feel lucky.

“How are you doing “

I don’t know i can’t see anything “ Lucy answered back weakly.

The beeping from a monitor along with the light mumble of the hallway traffic outside the room filled the silence.

I don’t want to be blind” Lucy croaked out

“We should have been going to University together” None of this fair of all people why Lucy? Caitlyn felt a lump forming in her throat at the sight of Degrassi High’s class president and valedictorian.

A few months ago, Lucy had an incredibly bright future her whole life ahead of her now as she lay on the bed. The future was as dark . Caitlyn knew the doctors held little hope hope that she’ll walk or see again. And even if she did either, there’s no guarantee she’ll be anywhere near what she was prior the accident.

But the Lucy Fernandez that she knew everyone knew isn’t one to to give up without a fight. Everything Lucy accomplished in the first eighteen years of her life, she did it through brute force and determination. This situation will be no different. Despite the grim prognosis, Lucy will fight against the odds stacked against her. She will use her grit to push through every obstacle that stood in her way to that bright future that wasn’t once hers. She may have to do some things differently than she was used to doing before she will have to take a different road to get there.

As Caitlyn walked out of the front doors of York Memorial Hospital and into the bright sunshine, she turned to where she believed Lucy’sroom was. You will get your bright future Lucy You will recover. I just know it!

By some earth-shattering miracle, Snake found a space for a large duffle bag in the overstuffed car. His mother was hovering anxiously around him for the entire morning

“Are you sure you have everything? Do you have enough socks or another toothbrush…”

Yes!” he snapped, his nerves fraying. He packed enough clothes to last him through to convocation plus grad school. How many more things does he need? He raked his fingers through his reddish-blonde hair, was she this nuts with Glen ? She ran back into the house to fill up yet another packing reciprocal.

Soon a familiar car parked near him. And a familiar person call his name

Snake turned around “Well, I didn’t expect to see you here,”

he glared at Joey, who walked slowly towards him, his head hung In shame. It was the first time they’d spoken to each other since that awful day...

“Yeah, well I went to see Wheels today. He’s really upset that you won’t talk to him.”

Snake didn’t seem all that concerned

“He’s upset? His parents were killed by a drunk driver so he gets drunk and kills a kid” Snake replied in disgust

“He’s really messed up”

“He’s messed up! what about Lucy? What about that kid? Just two years old! He didn’t get to do anything! Dead! Gone! Just like that!” He slammed the trunk of the car and shook his head in disbelief.

“Well, not talking to Wheels is going to change that!” Joey protested, walking back to his car.

Snake glanced at the front door. What’s taking her so long? Then at Joey who just reached the door of his car there’s one more thing Snake had to do…

“Listen, what happened at Bronco’s, I was mad.” Snake closed the door, crossed over to the passenger side, and got in

“Yeah, well, she would have found out anyway,” Joey sulked.

“I’m just sorry it was because of me.” Snake Responded taking ownership for his role in the events of that day

“ So you’re really leaving,” Joey said awkwardly.

Snake hopped in and put on his seatbelt “ yep. to tell you the truth, I’m glad to get out of here.”

Mrs. Simpson rushed out of the door, completely oblivious to what was happening

“Hello, Joey. How are you?”

“Good,” he answered politely

She got into the driver’s seat

“Mom, can we go now?” Snake sighed.

“ I don’t know how to talk to Wheels. Could you at least try,”

His mother turned to Joey curiously.

“Let’s go!” It was already a long morning, and he had no more patience. The sooner I’m out of here the better.

“We’ve been friends since grade 8,” Joey pleaded hanging on to the window.

Snake gave Joey one last look” See you Jeremiah” he said plainly. His mother started the engine, and they drove down the quiet neighbourhood street.

Joey watched the car disappear. The squeals of laughter floated through the air, kids enjoying the last few hours of summer vacation before the drudgery of school begins.

Joey walked back to his car started the engine and drove in the other direction in absolute silence.
