Misconceptions about gyaru

Hey guys! I know that I said I was done for today but I couldn't resist making one final post tonight. Don't worry! I've already finished the post I promised you guys and it is scheduled to post at noon tomorrow. But for now let's get into the topic of this post.

There are many misconceptions about gyaru and I'm here to sort of clear up some of these! So let's get startedddd

"Gyaru was never inspired by black people. It was inspired by bay watch"

This is VERY untrue. If you watch Haruka on tiktok or youtube you would know she has a mom who used to be a gyaru. And in a video with Haruka's mom she stated that gyaru was never inspired by bay watch and most of the inspiration was from black people and their style. There is even a gyaru substyle called "B-Kei" that is DIRECTLY inspired by protective hairstyles, hip hop and rap music, and street fashion.

"Only Japanese people can do gyaru"

A lot of non gals say this but this is incorrect. Everyone can be gyaru! I stated this in my first post but anyone of any gender, size, and race can be gyaru. One very popular gyarusa 'Black Diamond' is known for their big group and how they impacted the gyaru style and how others saw gyaru. One of their main goals was expanding gyaru to different countries! Many members have said that anyone can be gyaru. Their whole thing was basically "world domination" because they wanted to spread the message of gal and wanted others to embrace and join this unique style.

"Gyaru is asian fishing"

SOOOO many people assume that gyaru is asian fishing because it's a Japanese fashion subculture. Asian fishing is where someone pretends to be asian and does makeup to make themselves look asian. Gyaru ISNT this. There is a difference between asian fishing makeup and gyaru makeup. With gyaru makeup, if there's a droop the droop goes down and extends downwards. With asian fishing makeup the eyeliner extends the eye outwards and makes the person appear to have slanted and small eyes. As you can see in the image below the asian fishing makeup elongates and slants the eye while dolly makeup widens the eye and makes it appear bigger.

"Anything besides Yamanba isn't gyaru"

This could never be so far from the truth. In fact during the 90's when gyaru first started Yamanbas and Manbas weren't even considered gyarus by other gals at the time. It was later in the 2000's when people started to call Yamanbas gyarus and now Yamanba/Manba is a gyaru substyle. People will automatically assume that anyone who isn't wearing big lashes and white makeup on their eyelids isn't gyaru. But many gyaru substyles require soft dolly makeup such as Agejo and Himegyaru/Himekaji where the focus is more on the clothes and hair than the makeup. Unlike styles like Kurogyaru, Manba, Yamanba, Ganguro, and Gonguro where the main focus of the style is the dramatic makeup and deep tans.

"If you don't tan you aren't gyaru"

While many gyaru substyles do require tanning many other substyles don't require tanning! And some styles like Yamanba/Manba which heavily rely on the tan and makeup have substyles specifically for people who don't want to or can't tan but still wear Yamanba makeup. Not tanning doesn't make you any less gyaru :)

Smosh: Dixon Cider

Welcome to Clown College.

Another Smosh song for this blog (the other one actually got likes...what the hell is wrong with all of you?) and it's one I feel disproportionately strongly about. It's a song about apple cider, supposedly written to support a failing business and, gonna spoil the joke right now, "Dixon Cider" is a homonym for "dicks inside her", a joke that is the keystone of the song. More typical late 2000s-early 2010s sophomoric humor, right?

No duh. And it's still one of my favorite comedy songs from the era.

Having grown up with sex-obsessed R&B/hip-hop, I have a special place in my heart for songs that take the piss out of it, even if it's by the whitest dudes on the planet. The song is competently sung, the jokes are chuckleworthy and the even the bad rap breakdown isn't distractingly awful. I even have a favorite lyric:

It don't matter who you are White, black, Asian or Hispanic There's no need to panic You know that shit's organic

That's so fucking stupid it's hilarious. But I remember this song for another reason: it's disappointing ending.

Right there, at the end, they just come out and say the whole song is a joke about oral sex. That's not funny, it's lazy. Yes, there are ways to explain the joke outright and still be funny but these guys chose to intentionally faceplant rather than actually think of even a lame joke or even just dropping the cow.

Think I'm being pedantic? There's only one way to solve that. Here's another more obscure video:

This song has the same concept (Deck sounds like Dick...vaguely. If you're saying it fast/not paying attention) and is more amatuerish in its execution. Nobody's really trained to sing, the production values are minor, people just randomly show up to add onto a lame joke...but its ending blows Dixon Cider's out of the water with an actual joke. The wife complains about Dale using up the water to the point she can't take a shower. Song over, Dale sheepishly walks back in the house...and pops his head out of the dogdoor for the punchline:

"Also, I fuck my wife on the reg."

Boom. That's what this whole song was about. Dale didn't explain the joke, he just dropped the subtlety. Am I detail-obsessed? Yes. Does my point stand? I dunno. You read somebody bitch about a Smosh song for an entire post. A Smosh song. You judge who's weirder.

I just wanted to thank you as I have spend the last couple of evenings going through your posts. I love how level headed you are and you offer a lot of insights for me as a baby (toddler? preschooler?) ARMY.

I really love Jimin, I consider him to be one of the most beautiful humans on earth, and that is inside and out. With a voice of an angel to match.

Watching Jikook interact is my happy place (as is the whole BTS), when I watch them I get a sense that this world is not entirely shit, if something so beautiful and tender as their bond (love) can exist.

I was very happy to read about how much you love the rapline b/c I share this with you.(Hobi is the best live performer this side of Milky Way, I am in awe of Namjoon, and I am in love with Yoongi) Just an fyi, BTS rapline has a very interesting ability to atract people like me who did not like hip hop. I am a metal fan (symphonic metal like Nighwish, melodic and poetic lyrics), and my whole life I was trying to understand how can someone voluntarily listen to rap music. I didn´t get the appeal, the usual lyrics of US rappers disgust me and as whole, I avoided the genre.

Do you know what changed my mind? Ugh, Tear and Daechwitta. These three songs are surely my most streamed songs on spotify.

A quick comment on rap music and hip hop - this is easily the most diverse music genre in the world. Rap literally stands for Rhythm and Poetry, and this is music that has fueled political/class revolutions, rejuvenated Obama's 1st term campaign, and helped heal generational trauma. Much of it goes beyond bad bitches, pumping a rival full of lead, or big gold chains. RM, Yoongi, and Hobi are all legit hip hop heads who listen to and gain inspiration from the music you might find objectionable, to create the somewhat sanitized tracks you love in Ugh, Tear, and Daechwita. But please understand BTS are pulling from a long, old, tradition of Black rap music and there are many examples of Black artists employing that genre in the exact way BTS have: including J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, 2Pac, Lupe Fiasco, Lecrae, Noname, and Logic. I understand how some of hiphop is crude, misogynistic, and needlessly violent, and this probably shapes how you view the genre as a whole, but as a Black and Asian woman who listens to a lot of hiphop I'm sharing this perspective to show it's not all black and white, and that there's too much good in the genre to write it off as a whole. At its core, rap is about authenticity, freedom of expression, and flow. BTS has been one way for you to tolerate the genre, but you might be surprised to learn rap has a lot more in common with metal rock music than you might think. Just food for thought..

I loved reading your essay, but the truth is I hate writing about Yoongi, Namjoon, or Hoseok. Probably because I'm not a natural writer, I sometimes struggle to express myself in English, and I'm a little in love with (and almost perpetually tongue-tied by) my biases in the rapline. No matter how hard I try I can't seem to come off as anything but a bumbling simp with no self respect who will gladly throw her panties in their faces if given the chance.

Ahem.

But you're not here to read my excuses, so I'll try to briefly talk about one thing I love about Yoongi: his voice.

Yoongi has the deepest voice in BTS, after which is Namjoon, then Taehyung. Yoongi is also very versatile in how he uses his voice. Out of all the members, I think he speaks the most softly in his everyday speech, after Jimin, but he also cusses the most in his natural speech. In their earlier years you could hear his dialect almost every time he spoke (less so now), whenever his temper rose you'd hear it in how his voice went sort of sideways. I don't know how to explain it, but he wouldn't raise his voice, he wouldn't lower it, but it would sound a bit more... harsh and maniacal?

And because this is Yoongi we're talking about, he knows exactly what his strengths are and utilizes them to the fullest. He knows people go gaga over his voice, and so since 2013, he has highlighted his voice in his radio shows including DJ Suga Honey FM.

The 'honey' there is not by accident.

One of my favourite pass-times in 2020, was listening to the radio Vlive Yoongi did with Jimin on May 30th.

I'd play it when I was cleaning my home, buying groceries, or doing laundry. Yoongi and Jimin's voice in that Vlive is so calming to listen to, it feels like this:

I'm a bit of an audiophile so these are the sorts of things that get to me. In that radio episode, these grown men make cringe sound effects, Jimin puts Yoongi on the spot so many times you hear it in how Yoongi chuckles nervously, they can't take each other seriously enough to not burst into laughter every 5 minutes. Jimin is my favourite vocalist in BTS, and Yoongi's vocal inflections when rapping and singing is my favourite in BTS. He has a keen music sense that comes through in his harmonizing and layering. An example:

That thing I said about his voice going sideways when he's pissed off, you hear it in his music. I'm struggling here but bear with me as I try to explain what I mean.

Yoongi sometimes sounds like a child when he's pissed off. Where RM leads fully with a deep voice when he's cutting into a bastard, Yoongi goes full joker on you. The tone in his voice sounds juvenile, like a child taunting you in the most annoying way possible, sticking their tongue out and waving their toosh in your face knowing there's nothing you can do to them. It's the kind of taunting that gets under your skin so quick and nobody in BTS has perfected it better than Yoongi.

I love how Yoongi has rounded out his manner of speaking as he's matured. He still cusses at the drop of a hat but he's become more delicate with his speech, at least to fans on camera, and I've noticed this towards Namjoon, Hobi, and Jungkook too sometimes in recent years. He seems to be most loose in his speaking with Jimin, Jin, and Hoseok (again).

Yoongi has been fielding marriage proposals since January 21, 2013 when he was first introduced to ARMY as a member of BTS, and there's very good reason for it. In my opinion. I think Yoongi, Namjoon, and Hoseok are men and artists worth thirsting over in every fucking way.

Nobody asked, but I think this is important info for determining compatibility for anybody curious: I'd rate their sex drive thus: Namjoon > Hoseok = Yoongi. Backed by empirical evidence.

I know some people are genuinely confused at me not being conservative. Or me orbiting around radfem...while being prolife. I feel like you're the only blog that wouldn't take this wrong way tbh, but the fandom is just ridiculously sensitive in the wrong ways.

1) bts cover missing you

straight up became racist as if they don't know the meaning of the song for black people or the message or even understand the meaning of rap. All I saw regardless of blocking people was people saying "how they're gonna bring hate, some stupid ass Instagram account called the shade room or whatever is gonna ruin them, they're gonna disrespect the song and dedicated it to army's" then them just cover it and it not being an issue at all???? They showed so many wrong colors then.

2) people getting worked up over using "spoiler" when talking about namjoons upcoming album. Got off of Twitter bc I kept getting recommended these convos, but people are mad at the fact tweets are saying "namjoon has been spoiling the album in last year" which isn't wrong or true. Full on saying "you're making namjoon look like a fool and not giving him his credit" that sounds like projection, knowing he has given hints of so many things of their work. By why whole threads about it, it's silly, and you're distracted over that....depressing.

3) Jungkook in qutar.

Basically, within the last decade, lots of south Asians had died, around 1,6k and probably more uncounted died from poor work conditions. They were immigrants as well. Some people were aware and didn't like the fact big hit & jungkook were promoting it bc of that. Right now people seem to not realize you can care about both sides without seeming like an insensitive asshole the bread makers of those who have now passed and to seem like a Jungkook anti. Like yes I'm happy jungkook can perform in such a stadium like that, however the lack of awareness of lives taken is sad. There's people being straight up being Islamophobic or just worried about jungkook being in the country knowing what's happening in surrounding or like countries being called "Islamophobic" or just throwing the word around.

4) Crush situation and people turning on hoseok. Straight up took some girls side, a girl who manipulated the situation to being artists down. Was proven in her tweets that she tried to take down multiple group and solo artists for "anti blackness" when they weren't doing anything wrong.

There's being protective and being an ass for no reason. Like the fandom is just so bad in this area,I mean weak as well. It's just blank fake support or care tbh, so many peoples colors have been shown ( both racist & human insensitive & anti ) I can't even say only a certain percentage, it is always all or none. I always appreciate it when they defend us, however, we need to take a few hits to change and better our fandom as it's just depressing at this point.

When actual issues come up, most all turn selfish and turn into hungry consumers and not the "we'll protect you bangtan, we care <3" ex June 14 2022 and the sale drop.

2022 in the Rear View, pt 1

I know it's a cliche, but what happened to last year? I went back to look at my journal entries and life-blogging from 2022 and I found almost nothing. And that kind of bums me out! 2023 resolution: start journaling again! And don't be afraid to post personal blogs again! (My two conflicting concerns on the latter being 1. what if no one cares, 2. what if someone reads it?? )

Anyway, gonna see if I can piece together 2022 from photos and memory.

January

I started the year off right by traveling down to Tucson with my best friend Mko to meet with our mutual friend AR, whose mother had brought far, far too many pumpkins up from their farm in Cochise County. What to do with them?

Answer: bust them open and leave them in the desert for the javelinas, to the soundtrack of Smashing Pumpkins. And then go on a lovely hike.

Also, I took a lot of pictures of graffiti this year, so please enjoy "nanodick" on a traffic bollard, for some reason.

Around this time my coworker KC and I also became obsessed with learning how to say "What is love?" in every language imaginable. Our list is still hanging up at work a year later.

February

Apparently I didn't do much outside of working and visiting the family this month, with the exception of an excursion to an Asian food truck festival with my friend RAP. Top tier food photography = taking a bite out of your onigiri and taiyaki to show off their tasty fillings.

March

In March I took my parents to the main library branch for some reason? I can't remember why! May have just been trying to entertain them while they were visiting me, but I do recall we had a good time. It also has some nice views of my neighborhood.

Based on photos, I also took a lot of walks and ate a lot of Greek and Italian food this month, both activities I approve of.

I also received my birthday koláčky three months late (because they are a pain in the ass to make and my mother was busy, and based on the fact that we started dispensing a new PET product at work apparently so was I), but then, it's never too late for koláčky.

Brought some in to work and they were a hit, so much so that when I dropped some on the ground, one of my coworkers picked up all the koláčky that landed filling-side up and ate them.

April

This month saw me wearing a heart monitor for three days, in an ongoing effort to figure out why I felt so shitty all the time. The results were simply "low blood pressure, drink more electrolytes", same thing I was told 15 years ago dealing with similar issues. Here's to consistency!

In significantly better news, I had an opportunity to foster a wee juvenile bearded dragon!! My coworker MH was dealing with personal issues that required moving in with someone who is wary of lizards and pets in general, and since we are Lizard Pals at work she asked if I could take the lizard in until she found lizard-friendly housing.

Her name is Gible, and she was SO TINY. The other bearded dragons I've had (Genbu & Seiryuu, and Hot Sauce) were all rescued adults, so some of this was new to me. And I don't know if this was particular to Gible or to juveniles in general, but she was a much more vigorous climber than my previous beardies, and I'd find myself looking not just in corners and under tables but ON TOP OF tables and shelves when I'd collect her after letting her free-roam for a while. The first time I stood up and saw a tiny lizard staring at me from the top of my table was a delightful shock!

AUTHENTICITY:

I always talk to people and get the “you’re so different than I imagined” talk. While I know this is meant to be a compliment, and hearing it gives me great solace in knowing that someone has finally uncovered the real Lucia without letting their judgements of who I am from my social media, etc. hinder that, I cannot help but feel slightly sad. What about all of the individuals that never see the real me? Or all of the people who allow an Instagram post or a passing glance to write my narrative of who I am as an individual? This blog post is dedicated to starting my journey of authenticity and sharing ME on social media. From a young age I’ve been passionate about writing. In my eyes, the beauty of the written word surpasses all other forms of communication. Writing was my first love, and we had a tumultuous affair from writing articles for The Indianapolis Star to publishing my poetry in an anthology on Amazon and other international print magazines. Like all first loves, I put a tremendous amount of pressure on my love for writing and considered even making it my major. Eventually, we went our separate ways but my passion and knack for it has never ceased to exist, even many years later. I’m writing this first post as a toast to authenticity, and to using my social media to express who Lucia Ponader really is. She rather sentimental (queue the weekly cry sesh!) She is an avid lover of words and will constantly use large words which shocks people (girls can be hot and smart too. It’s called elevated diction. Godspeed on your journey of literacy). She is messy, passionate, unorganized (just ask her friends) and a whirlwind of emotion and intensity. She is a lover of ALL Asian cuisine and with absolutely zero apprehension would eat any form of Asian cuisine every day for the rest of her life. She is a self proclaimed dumpling connesuir. She absolutely cannot function without her trusted Aquaphor. She MUST sleep with multiple fans blasting on full speed directly onto her face (to the average overnight guest one would believe that they were at sea on a particularly windy day trying to fall asleep in her room). She might quite possibly be a hoarder because of her emotional attachment to literally anything. She enjoys sunshine beaming down, with a kombucha in tow and her favorite book. Or watercoloring outdoors with a great friend. She lived in Italy for 8 months and LOVES to travel. She conquered Hawaii next. Her absolute favorite movie of all time is the Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann, one of her favorite directors of all time. She hates driving, those sporadic “can I talk to you” texts, and picky eaters. She aspires to be a food critic, travel to every country in the world, and make her own Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations (P.S. Anthony Bourdain is my answer to the who would you have dinner with dead or alive question). She hates small talk and would rather engage in an enthralling discussion about something more abstract. Her favorite question to argue: do you believe in the idea of truth as it is literally defined? (in my opinion the correct answer is no, truth is merely a construct that is completely subjective and therefore is inherently unable to exist according to the definition of “truth”). She is creative and thinks outside the box; rules do not apply to her. She is an internationally published poet. She once ghostwrote music for her SoundCloud rapping ex. Favorite artist? Monet or musically it would have to be Cigarettes After Sex. She has been coined the “jester” of her friend group, as it’s her job to entertain and make people laugh. She does not believe that love is enough or that it exists for her (absolutely feel free to prove me wrong at any point). She loves a good laugh. She has flaws too, like all of us, but perhaps we will dive into those in another post. She exists differently in every single persons mind, but it’s time she takes control of that narrative, just a little. Here’s my take on authenticity, perfectly imperfect. Stop taking Instagram so seriously.

Most of Canadian fashion is influenced by European designers, such as; Adidas, Nike, H&M, Inditex, LVMH, TJX, and Kering to name a few.

The typical Canadian cuisine is unique, drawing inspirations from all over the world, but Europe again has the most influence. In recent memory, particularly East Asian and South Asian dishes have become more widespread, mostly due to the influx of immigration from those areas of the world.

Once again, architecture in Canada has roots in Europe. Mostly France and England, but neo-Classical from Italy and Brutalism from Soviet Russia also have a significant foothold.

For leisure activities, Europe and Indigenous culture share a duopoly of impact. For Europe; football, competitive swimming, baseball (cricket origins), tennis, volleyball, golf, water polo, rugby, gymnastics, and boxing, as well as much more. Hockey and basketball, while both were invented by European-descended Canadians, drew inspiration from existing Indigenous sports. Canoeing has, in contrast, remained unchanged as an Indigenous leisure activity.

Most of Canadian entertainment in its current form has European origins, like writing, cinema, and music, but these forms of entertainment also independently sprouted up all around the world.

Modern music has a multifaceted origin story, like rap and jazz being African American creations, but music theory and language all come from Europe. The modern scene in music is incredibly diverse, from K-pop and American pop, European synth and electronic music, classical music and big bands from all over West, rap and jazz from African Americans, rock and pop music from England and elsewhere, country music, and so on.

Cinema traces its origins to plays done in Greece and its modern structure from playwrights like Shakespeare and Cervantes.

Most philosophical, economical, and cultural ideas can trace their origins to Europe. Democracy from ancient Greece and its modern format in Canada from England. Law and order from ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and the British Empire.

Most of the prominent businesses in modern day Canada are multinational organizations that have international origin. However, there are some big name brands that have existed since the fur trade, like Hudson’s Bay, which is the world’s oldest continuously operating international business.

Many traditions in Canada have European origins, like Christmas, Easter, and Halloween, but one of the most important is Thanksgiving, which is a fusion of Indigenous and European cultures. It originated in Massachusetts in 1621 when colonists and the Wampanoag tribe shared an autumn harvest.
