Local Conventions, Holiday Markets, and Plans for 2025
Back on Dec. 7, 2024, I attended the second ever Co-op City Comic Con as a vendor. I met some awesome fellow vendors. Most of the patrons, young and old, were my neighbors and folks who are employed in the neighborhood. All were curious. Some had money to spend. As a vendor, I sold my book, The Ananda Accords, and comic books from my personal collection. When all was said and done, I sold nine…

I can't overstate how much I love the color wheel (or color pie) from Magic:The Gathering
I started playing magic back in 2001 when I was 14, Odyssey had just come out. I knew a bit of English, and I soon started reading Magic's website for news and spoilers. That's when I discovered @markrosewater 's column Making Magic. MaRo is both a great game designer and an impressive writer, his column was entertaining, witty, fun and informative. I consider Magic and especially his column to be the main reason I learned to read English so fast.
Now, 2001 was a period of transformation in Magic. The main saga in the story had just ended (consider Avengers:Endgame), and the people at WotC were reconsidering and rebalancing the color wheel. I remember there being weeks dedicated to the single colors, and MaRo's comulumn being deeeep dives into those colors.
Now, what's the color wheel? You see, in the universe of Magic: The Gathering the primordial energy and building block is mana, which comes in one of five colors: white, blue, black, red and green. Mechanically, each card is associated to one (or more) colors, and each color has mechanics that are typical for it, like green being the color of growth and big creatures, blue being the color of spells and flying, and black being the color of death and zombies. But the people at WotC put a lot of effort to also distinguish each color thematically, defining *why* each color has certain mechanics, what it says about the color's philosophy and values. Green is the color of nature and community, where the small ones help the big ones grow and foster. Blue is the color of knowledge and artificiality, black is the color.
It's pretty intuitive most of the time, but here's where it gets even better: the placing of the colors on the wheel has a meaning. Colors that are close to each other are "allied" colors and have something in common, while colors that are opposite of each other represent the two opposites on an axis:

I don't have the time (or skill) to go into detail here, but this system is so damn elegant. It has five basix building blocks but allows to represent an incredibly vast array of concepts, characters and behaviors.

The color wheel is still my favourite system to define/describe fictional characters, it's miles better than the alignment chart of D&D (or, like, hogwarts houses).
I find it incredibly fun to discuss what color(s) certain character fall into: is superman white, green? Is batman white, black, blue? A combination of those? Ryuko Matoi is red, Satsuki Kiryuin is white. Do you disagree? Perfect, tell me why, it's always super interesting to see which aspects of a character people consider the most prominent!
My favourite Magic blocks and sets were those playing with the color wheel and its concepts, mainly Planar Chaos but ESPECIALLY Ravnica. Man, I really need to play some rpg campaign set on Ravnica sooner or later.
I played magic for 5-6 years (until I finished high school), but the color wheel is ingrained in my mind. It was the main chitchat topic when I first started going out with my SO more than 15 years ago xD
So yeah, not sure who this is for, it's mainly me rambling and fanboying about one of my favourite game design and character creation concepts. If you don't know the color wheel, I suggest you try to read a bit about it. And if you do know it, what do you think? Is there anyone out there who used it as a basis for an rpg or foe writing?

I think the only general marvel content I’m missing is fantastic 4…
Besides some/most things past Avengers:Endgame +comics I have at least the basics
But F4? Fucking nothing 💀
Like n o t h i n g
I don’t consume Fantastic 4 content
Not yet, anyway
ALSO the reason I’m more uncultured with ‘new marvel’ is because uhm. I fixtated on original 6 +Bucky so new content barely reached it
It only reached me because of Bucky
And uh. I kinda went into X-Men instead of the rest of mcu so. Yeah
And then Spiderverse somehow got to me???
It’s weird idk

Dizionari Dimenticati
Alessandro Morandotti, Minime, 1979/80

Advancement in CGI and Human Rights: Avatar and Brokeback Mountain Two-Film Essay
By: Jillian Arnold
"Everything is backwards now, like out there is the true world, and in here is the dream."
Although it seems like Avatar and Brokeback Mountain couldn’t be any different from each other, they have made their impact on specific groups and have allowed for the continuation of progress. Avatar changed how the film industry used CGI with its groundbreaking use of 3D technology. The film was shot using a new type of 3D camera that was specifically designed for the film, giving it a more immersive and realistic feel. Brokeback Mountain changed how queer people and those a part of the LGBTQ+ community were viewed by the public eye. The movie has also been regarded as a turning point for the advancement of queer cinema into the mainstream. These films have been an example for other films to follow as well as cementing their places in cinematic history with their ideas of progress.
Avatar released into theaters on December 8th, 2009 worldwide. With its budget of $237,000,000, it made $2,923,706,026 worldwide. This made the film the highest grossing film in history, surpassing Avengers:Endgame and Titanic. The film featured Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, and Stephan Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch. The CGI and camera work in this movie inspired other films like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Ready Player One to follow motion capture and use the same CGI, as well as creating its own franchise.

When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers knowledge of the indigenous race and their culture, for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. He works with the avatar program, lead by Dr. Grace Augustine and fellow scientist Dr. Norm Spellman. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful Na’vi Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics. Jake joins forces with the Na’vi clans from the planet to take a stand and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

Brokeback Mountain released on December 9th, 2006 worldwide. The film had a budget of $14,000,000 and made $178,064,141 worldwide. It featured Heath Ledger as Ennis Del Mar, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams as Alma, Anne Hathway as Lureen Newsome, and Randy Quaid as Joe Aguirre. The film not only subverts the typical masculine cowboys seen in American Westerns but also spans a wonderful homoerotic love story for twenty years.

Here is the original trailer from Brokeback Mountain from 2005
Brokeback Mountain’s use of a queer relationship allowed for the feelings of safety for people of the LGBTQ+ community and it paved the way for LGBTQ+ films to establish their legacy with pride. In the article, Queer Theory and Brokeback Mountain, it discusses breaking the norm with Brokeback Mountain and how it discusses the key ideas of queer theory in the film. Although there was lots of criticism for the film and its homosexual relationship, the film is praised in the article for speaking about topics like the closet, homosociality, and the performativity of masculinity and gender. A quote I chose from this article that I liked was, “the biopolitical arrangements of 1960s Midwest America interlace with the closet, or how compulsory heterosexuality shapes the protagonists’ sexual and kinship behavior while providing the conditions for the articulation of same-sex desire.” The movie helps create the myth of the American frontier and the freedoms it was meant to represent and shows the fantasies of liberation that don't always correspond to the world off-screen. Similar films that came to follow was Call Me by Your Name, which in the scope of queer theory, had representation of sexual fluidity and emphasized a queer relationship.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina killed 1,836 people throughout the southern United States. Brokeback Mountain and Hurricane Katrina are related because they both sat and made people think. So many people were affected by the hurricane and it made people everywhere sit and think about what they would do and how much things meant to them. Similarly, this movie touched on topics like queer theory that not many people liked to talk about at that time so it made people reflect and hopefully realize that homosexuality isn't bad.

For Avatar, James Cameron is a visionary who brought about major technological innovations through his films. He used a combination of 3D and CGI wherein he mixed real footage with CGI that was motion captured. He used performance capture, use of simul-cam, digital animation, head rig for facial capture, replacement of performance features, a camera system using 3D fusion. All of these technologies had been used in movies individually, but James Cameron combined all of them to make his movie, which is what made it huge in cinematic history.
youtube
Here is a video documentary about how they made the movie. Just watching it is so intriguing because it’s crazy to see all these different types of technology making one movie.
The historical event for 2009 was Barack Obama becoming the first African American to become President of the United States. This movie and this event are related because of the historical value to them as well as their influence on politics and political topics. Barack Obama will go down in history for being the first African-American President in history, and this event gave hope to people across America. Avatar became the highest-grossing film ever and has remained that way for over 10 years, making it go down in history.

I chose Avatar because I remember being fascinated by it when I was growing up but I haven't watched it in a while so I wanted to see it again and analyze it. The CGI in the movie is crazy because almost everything isn't real and had to be made on a computer. I like the message of deforestation and love. It is also an important movie right now with the threat of global destruction by the hands of humans because change is necessary. I chose Brokeback Mountain because I always see it on social media or people reference it. And because one of my favorite actors, Heath Ledger, is in it as well as other amazing actors such as Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, and others. It is also important because it represents the LGBTQ+ community since it is pride month and a time to see all people have gone through just to be themselves with something they can't control. I had a great time watching these movies and I think they're a great watch, for their plots and their important themes.
“Tell you what... the truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.”
