everyone (human research scientists) want me carnally (have been consistently selecting me for paid neuroscience studies because i'm the only trans person who has responded to their ads and there is a systemic lack of conclusive science on the bodies and brains of people who do not fall under particular dominant demographic) and i'm being paid big money for it
#THIS IS YOUR PSA TO SIGN UP FOR RESEARCH STUDIES#BE A LAB RAT FOR SCIENCE#GET PAID BIG MONEY#currently undergoing a physical screening for my 3rd study#waiting to hear back on a 4th and they sounded very excited over the phone

Although it could be considered relative, Test Subject has decided not all days here are created equal.
There are the days they are left alone in their cell, like a book forgotten on the shelf of a library. Those are the dullest of their life but there is solace that they aren’t actively being cut open.
Then there are days of trials. Sometimes injections, sometimes infusions, sometimes inhalants, sometimes surgeries where the Test Subject doesn’t even know what occurred because they were unconscious for it. Then they only see the aftermath.
And then there are the measuring days. At least that’s what they call them. TS probably shouldn’t like them, going poked, moved around, blood lost by the bag that leaves them struggling to lift their arms. But at the same time, the X-rays, the MRI’s, the swabs, although they are all capturing and removing things piece by piece from TS, it feels like the least is being done to them.
They know. They know the logic didn’t make sense- lull days they were left completely alone. But on those days they became afraid that maybe they were no longer useful. Maybe their final test had been run, maybe they were slated for expiration next. They couldn’t know and that was made those days just as invasive as the days that unknown vials made them tremble, vomit, and stopping breathing.
At least on measuring days” the techs didn’t talk as much. They just picked up limbs and manipulated, just like a doll. One liked to hum. TS could relax here. These days they didn’t usually even notice when canulas went in.
And to think they used to be so afraid of needles.

Its important to note that while GLaDOS is completely capable of outright killing people, she seems to very often resort to excusing it as some kind of experiment, lying either to her victims or perhaps even herself. You have to REALLY set her off for her to drop all pretense and get completely murderous with you. Viewing it from that perspective, its really interesting that she used the "Schrodinger's Cat" thought experiment as an excuse to gain access to some neurotoxin, because.. When you think about it, she didn't even lie in this case. The scientists never considered that while traditionally the experiment involves a literal box with a cat inside of it, Aperture can easily serve as a "box" with plenty of employees that can easily serve as the "cats". From an outsider's perspective, she has actually perfectly recreated the exact conditions of the thought experiment - with no employees ever leaving, and the company going completely radio silent, an outside observer perceives Aperture's staff as simultaneously alive and dead. And the raging Resonance Cascade on the surface means that, at least for a good while, there won't be a single soul that could open up the "box" and break the illusion.

Lab Rat
I had originally slated this for our discord server's house wars contest but didn't quite get it finished in time. I still had a lot of fun drawing it though and got to utilize the new way I've started drawing hair over the last couple of months.

A Comprehensive Guide To My Rat Hierarchy
Greetings and salutations!
Strap in and get comfy. You're all about to receive a detailed, informative, and fascinating lecture on the details of my rat creations. Let's begin.
My rats are organized in a hierarchy, based (loosely) off of a system of monarchy. The progression goes as follows:
The Commonality
The Gentry
The Cavaliers
The Vassals and
The Knave.
They are not organized by importance, but rather by size, ability, and threat level.
Below is a diagram illustrating examples of each tier of the Hierarchy (save for the Knave, but we'll get to him later):
Now, let's take a closer look, shall we?
First, of course, shall be:
The Commonality
These little darlings are primarily lab assistants, but they're also built for surveillance and the relaying of messages.
Their mechanical eyes are capable of capturing photographs and video footage, and then projecting the images holographically - perfect for delivering asynchronous villainous monologues!
The Commonality are also very fast and agile, able to climb up and burrow through just about any material, from metal to solid rock. They can be quite the stealthy little fellows!
Next, let's take a look at:
The Gentry
The Gentry are built for low-risk combat, but when deployed in packs, they can pack quite a wallop! Their teeth and claws can deliver a considerable amount of damage on their own, but what really sets the Gentry apart is their ability to wield electricity.
The Gentry have artificial nervous systems consisting of live wiring, which carries an electrical current through their bodies - note the electrodes in the ears and tail. However, what you don't see upon first glance is the electrical generator hidden within the jaws of the Gentry. Upon opening its mouth, a Gentry can release a powerful surge of lightning, much like the breath weapon of a dragon!
And aren't they just adorable?!
Onwards and upwards, we have:
The Cavaliers
These beautiful specimens are especially skilled at hunting and tracking, built with heightened senses of sight, smell, and hearing, as well as the ability to see in infrared waves. In other words, there's no use hiding.
The Cavaliers are also built for speed - those long, slender limbs allow them to gallop at speeds matching those of Acinonyx jubatus! What's more, they're the perfect size to be mounted, making them excellent for a quick and theatrical getaway.
Now, here's something especially interesting. The Cavaliers are always deployed in pairs. Specific pairs. Each Cavalier has a companion, with which they are psychically linked. They can sense each other's every move and thought - the ultimate hunting partners! Additionally, if one Cavalier in a pair is incapacitated or seriously injured in combat, the other receives a surge of power as a defense mechanism.
Moving right along, we reach:
The Vassals
Positively petrifying, aren't they?!
These magnificent beasts are easily my most formidable creations yet. If their cleaver-like tails don't get you, their claws and teeth certainly will!
When developing the Vassals, I began using a mutation serum of my own concoction, which came with a few unexpected (but welcome!) side effects. Firstly, due to the monstrous origin of several of the serum's ingredients, the Vassals are the only tier of the hierarchy that require sustenance. And let me tell you, they have got some impressive appetites! A Vassal is capable of digesting just about anything, organic and inorganic - but they especially like any variety of fresh meat. This has been quite the asset, actually - if I need someone to disappear, the Vassals are on the job!
Secondly, you may notice the viscous, black fluid weeping from their faces. This is entirely normal, I assure you - just another aspect of the serum's mutation. The Vassals are constantly exuding a highly acidic and toxic excretion - don't worry, it doesn't bother them in the slightest. You, however...let's just say you don't want to be anywhere near the stuff.
Finally, the mutation serum also allows the Vassals to heal from injuries at a remarkably accelerated rate, making them even harder to take down! This also allows a Vassal to open its jaws to an unnaturally wide extent, hence the scar tissue around the mouth. I rather like the look of it - look at those friendly smiles!
Last, but certainly not least, we move on to:
The Knave
Knavey here is my primary method of transportation. He's just a tad larger a school bus, making him ideal for transporting myself and an assortment of the rats for missions of all sorts!
Knavey's been fitted with claw-like appendages on both of his tails, as well as on the end of his "tongue", for lack of a better term. Said "tongue" is entirely prehensile, and can extend to nearly three-quarters of Knavey's body length. As such, Knavey is excellent for retrieving heavy cargo, and for capturing live cargo!
And, with that, my hierarchy draws to a close.
Thanks ever so much for reading - I do hope you all found this informative! I certainly had fun writing it.
Ta-ta for now!

So...what do we think of the way lab rats handled Taylor's disability? Personally, I think they did a decent job narratively. They steered away from "this is a sci-fi type of show so we can just 'fix' the disability". The visor Douglas made for her basically functions like a cane would, except its more compact and on her face, but all it does is tell her when an obstacle is in front of her...like a cane would. She's still blind. That doesn't go away. Taylor goes on missions again as the hero she is, even with her disability. She's disabled and she can go on missions.
I say narratively because there were a few comments about "a newbie, a quitter and a blind girl!" and with how Leo wanted the doctors to "fix it", but as far as Leo's comments go, he mostly felt guilty about his actions altering her way of life forever, which it did.
Seriously, what do we think? I'm not physically disabled myself, but I'm taking a class where we talk about this stuff and I was reminded of this Taylor plotline recently. I've been thinking about this all day.
#technically i do have a disability but its adhd and i don't usually think of it as a disability even tho it is#but i'm not all that qualified to talk about physical disabilities#i just find it interesting that lab rats chose this route#bc they could have used the cliche trope in scifi and had taylor's vision be restored by the end of the two parter through some BS science#but they followed through and kept it in AND let her continue to be badass#which i think was pretty cool of them#the enhanced spatial awareness isn't as high tech as it sounds bc its just vibrating when it senses an obstacle#but its also a good accommodation for missions and training when she needs her hands free#so they added tech but not to “fix it”. just to help her navigate the world WITH her disability#lab rats#taylor krane#disability#blindness#it also helps that she had enhanced bionic senses already#IN ADDITION i find it interesting that they went the “fix it with bionics” route TWICE for leo but not for taylor. narratively I mean#logically eyes are more difficult to fix than limbs since there are much finer parts and functions involved#rebuilding that would be more difficult than building things in like with chase. chase's bionic eye likely uses some of chase's original#eye function. his eyesight wasn't recreated from scratch#but from a writing perspective they could have given her different damage that could be “fixed” with bionics but they didn't
