web of wyrd observation: why barbie's wyrd web just makes sense

after going to see Barbie in theaters, i came home and was wondering what makes barbie - barbie? so i looked up the day she greeted the public. and i was super intrigued by her wyrd web.

9-9-18 REPEATING 

9 is representative of the hermit - the hermit is someone who can be alone comfortably, which is exactly the point of a doll. you can give barbie to a child/person and they can entertain themselves. 9-9 - one hermit is the doll and the other is the person playing with the doll! the hermit is meant to be a reflective card that asks you to do some soul searching as to what you want and need - playing with barbie is meant to showcase that you too can be whatever you want to be just like barbie. add in 18 - the moon, which is about "self-deception," or make-believe as we called when we were children. the moon is also meant to help you see the hidden aspects of yourself and what you want most. which again... is the point of barbie.

3 AS THE CROWN NUMBER

the truest barbie girl of the major arcana - the empress. barbie's highest self being the essence of "divine femininity" just makes so much sense to me. let's not forget barbie was designed for creativity inspiration while also showing the power of feminine energy. and she did that, just like the empress.

6 AS THE FLOW NUMBER

the Barbie movie definitely illustrated for me that the balance of femininity and masculinity is necessary for the success of barbie. if one entity has too much of the power (the whole board room being male, barbieworld never having a ken on council, etc.) then there will be issues in the "business realm" (which is the message of the lovers). in terms of love, while barbie doesn't need ken, it is important that they still respected each other and communicated in a healthy manner (which is definitely depicted in the movie). same can be said on the business end of things - barbie has "skinny, blonde bimbo" energy, so the company has to keep their products inclusive (keep evolving) or risk being cancelled.

21 AS THE MONETARY NUMBER

the Barbie movie is a perfect reminder of the world card that is represented in her matrix - recognition for success, cyclic change, new chapters, etc. if barbie hadn't been a success, we would have never had one barbie movie let alone many (i could never forget the animation versions lol)! nor would we have collectable barbies! the collectable barbie is the energy found in this number - the world is literally a woman surrounded by a laurel (it looks a bit like barbie in her box, if you ask me)!

15 AS THE PARTNERSHIP NUMBER

i think it is a little funny that the partnership number is 15 - the devil. barbie is supposed to be a feminine icon - she doesn't need a man to make her dreams come true (which is showcased in the movie). BUT YET WE HAVE KEN. ken is a destructive concept when thinking of barbie as strong and independent - it's contradictory to have barbie be an independent woman who doesn't need any one, but then make ken - her boyfriend ("patriarchy" lol - cause a woman needs a man to be accomplished in life *clown emoji*). it's the toxic contradictory energy of having a ken for a barbie that makes the devil an un-ironically perfect number for this doll.

Who are the skeletons that would have a license and could drive? What car/van/truck would they drive? And would they have any preferences over gas-powered, electric powered, or hybrids?

Undertale Sans - He technically has a license (he passed it with his brother to do brotherly bonding lol) but he's not using his car very often, he doesn't like to drive and with his sleep problems, he's scared he might fall asleep and have an accident. He has a very old gas-powered car, he's not rich lol.

Undertale Papyrus - After four attempts, Papyrus has now his car license. He had to learn it's illegal to do flips with you car (even though he's still doing it sometimes with Undyne because the police is not the boss of him, or that the police is Undyne and Undyne is screaming "DO IT DO THE FLIP" and if the police says so, it can't be illegal... right?). He has an hybrid red convertible. Sans offered it to him for his first birthday on the surface.

Underswap Sans - He has his license and he spends most of his time in his police car doing patrols. He still has a blue hybrid convertible home but doesn't use it very often as he is so scared to damage it.

Underswap Papyrus - HELL NAH. He's way too anxious to drive a car, there's no way he's going to pass his license. Teleportation and the bus are more than enough.

Underfell Sans - He prefers motorcycles. He has a car license but he has no cars, it's just not the same. He has three motorcycles he calls his babies and that he's taking care of very seriously.

Underfell Papyrus - Edge doesn't have his license yet as he failed five times the exam. He might not take criticism this well and have tried to kill the examinator the five times... Red is working on his angry issues. Though, even if he doesn't have a license, he's driving an old gas-powered gas illegally and doesn't give a shit.

Horrortale Sans - He legally cannot drive because of his memory problems. He doesn't like being stuck in a car anyway.

Horrortale Papyrus - He technically has a car license, but no car, as no car are fitting his size. Some people are working on a special car for him though and he's really excited about it!

Horrorfell Sans - He's a motorcycle fan as well and only have a motorcycle license.

Horrorfell Papyrus - He has a special electric car he can drive with his legs paralysis, working half with magic and half with human technology. He's proud because he had to appear in a lot of TV news for this.

Horrorswap Sans - He doesn't have his license and doesn't plan to do. He's not the biggest fan of confined spaces.

Horrorswap Papyrus - He tried, had a massive panic attack and never tried again.

Swapfell Sans - He has a very nice and expensive electric car and he is very proud of it, making sure it's always very clean to make his neighbours jealous. He has his license, obviously, he is a respectable citizen.

Swapfell Papyrus - He has a bright pink small electric car. It was black originally, a gift from Nox, but Rus wanted to piss him off one day and kinda decided it was a good idea to transform it into a Barbie car. At least he is visible. He has his car license, but he's not a very good driver...

Fellswap Gold Sans - He has a very expensive SUV and it's badly dommaged as Wine simply paid the car school to have his license and it worked. He still doesn't know how to drive, it's a 50/50 he hits something on the road or a wall.

Fellswap Gold Papyrus - Seeing Wine drive vaccinated him for a lifetime and he refuses to have a license or a car thank you very much. He also refuses to go in any car with Wine driving.

Outertale Sans - Who cares about cars when you can fly??? He doesn't need any car.

Outertale Papyrus - As a nanny, he had to have a car to go to school and in the park. He has a gas-powered car and he is very careful on the road like in anything he's doing. Which means he's driving very slow which is pissing off everyone on the road.

Dancetale Sans - He has a personnal driver so no. He's really fine like this.

Dancetale Papyrus - He's passing his car license soon! He still needs to learn a lot of things and it's making him very anxious, but he's getting there.

Dancefell Sans - He has his license but somehow all of his cars died. It's like he's cursed or something. People crashed in his cars, random people burn it, it got caught in a forest fire too once... He still waits money to buy another one.

Dancefell Papyrus - He has a driver as well and doesn't have any need for a car. Since he's a celebrity, he prefers not to be driving himself in case some crazy fans put themselves in danger to see him.

Farmtale Sans - He has a truck and a tractor license. He prefers to drive big trucks instead of small cars.

Farmtale Papyrus - He knows how to drive a tractor but that's it... He's not the biggest fans of vehicles.

Mafiatale Sans - He has a car, but mafia rivals keep burning it so he decided it was not worth it and just teleports now.

Mafiatale Papyrus - He has an hybrid car, but no license as he might have burned the car school down after they refused to give him his license. So for now, he needs to wait.

Mafiafell Sans - He has his license and a gas-powered minivan full of dog cages. He's using it in his every day life and to carry his dogs for mafia missions. It's the second love of his life after the dogs.

Mafiafell Papyrus - He has his license and a hybrid car decorated with skulls and pirate flags so everyone knows he's dangerous even if everyone thinks his car is just ugly. He's mad when someone insults his car.

Ink - Who needs a car when you can travel in any universe you can?

Error - He has a collection of cars he stole in other universes because they looked pretty. He has no idea how to drive them though.

Disbelief Papyrus - Delta has a license and a big SUV. He wanted a smaller car but since he passes a lot of time with Asgore, he kinda had to adapt to his size. He doesn't mind though!

Dustale Sans - He loves to explode car tires, but he doesn't have a car or a license.

Killer Sans - He has a license but he lost it after he kinda decided to drive at 250 kph on a small road because there was no one... (well no one except the cops in ambush...)

Don't Fire Your Editors, Kids

When I started reading the ACOTAR series with my reading buddy, my sister started getting all up in my ear going "Throne of Glass is waaaaaaay better, you should read it." My skeptical little brain went, "that is rarely how authorial quality works," and then I picked up the book, read it in two days, and had to eat MASSIVE amounts of crow. Because when I finished the book, my abiding question was, "WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN THIS BOOK AND ACOTAR????" Celaena has a personality, a well-handled and vaguely mysterious backstory that held my interest, her relationships were interesting, and she's damn competent. On top of that, the book was decently plotted and paced, and even the side characters were interesting. This was a pretty decent book, and I admit to being deeply but pleasantly surprised. Let's talk Throne of Glass.

Some light spoilers below the break, so be warned if you haven't read this and want to go in without being spoiled!

So apparently this book was pitched as "Cinderella, but if she's there to kill the prince, not kiss him," but she ended up doing a lot more kissing than killing, despite the fact that she's literally in an assassin's competition to be king's champion. I wasn't mad about it though, because by the time we actually get to the ball, our murder Cinderella has developed real--if somewhat complicated--relationships with Dorian, Chaol, Nehemia, and even Cain and the political actors of the castle that are driving a lot of the character development even as the contest sort of grinds the plot along. Ok, "grinds the plot along" might be ungenerous, because it's pretty clear that the contest isn't the main focus of the book, it's just the plot device that gets Celaena into the castle and back into society, and the fact that it gets pretty aggressively sidelined for actual character stuff isn't a bad thing, but while the character development is compelling, the plot pretty clearly understands that it's not the main character.

And I do enjoy our main character here. Celaena is deeply competent as an assassin, and she is deeply competent at survival. She survived a literal death camp for a full year, and still had her senses of humor and joy on the other side. She's kind of a murder Barbie as well, which I adore, because being a badass should not preclude enjoying pretty, sparkly, girly things like pretty clothes and jewelry, if the character wants to like that. Basically, I'm never going to shame a badass girl for encompassing BOTH those words.

Celaena also enjoys poking at Chaol, which is never ever not fun, and I really do like the slowish burn of Chaol learning that there is more to Celaena than just "best assassin in the world." That relationship is deeply fun, and honestly I prefer it to her relationship with Dorian as far as a romance goes, because while Chaol doesn't have NEAR the experience with brutality and mortality that Celaena does, the two hold more of a shared understanding of things that are hard in the world than she and Prince "My Parents and My Younger Brother Suck" do.

That said though, I think the relationships that I like the most are Celaena and Nox and Celaena and Nehemia. That Celeana was able to find a friend among her competitors speaks wonderfully to contradict our assumptions about her as an assassin. She is kind, she wants friends, and she is willing to not only put herself out to save Nox's life, she is willing to work with him on skills that, whether or not he is successful in this competition, will serve him well out in the world. Celaena doesn't necessarily get anything out of this either; if she loses, she dies in Endovier. If she wins, she's stuck stooging for the king for four years, and she or Nox could die before they ever see each other again. The relationship cannot be permanent, has no long-term guarantees, but they still find each other and help each other and make the best of the time they have. This relationship is super cute and I appreciated that there was more than just aggressive competition with the other dudes in the mix.

Speaking as a cishet AFAB gal, relationships between girls can be CHALLENGING. We don't get hard details about why Celaena doesn't trust other girls in this book, but we do get the lovely realization that actually she can trust other girls and have trusting, meaningful, and positive relationships with them. It's not easy, and the communication is perhaps suboptimal for political and security reasons, but learning that it's ok to trust Nehemia and lean into the feeling that she likes her and have that rewarded is lovely, and given the unfortunate continuing prevalence of girls hating on other girls in books, it was nice to see that addressed directly and directly contravened.

Besides, we still get Kaltain being mind-whammied into mean-girling, and if Perrington doesn't get his ass handed to him for that, we riot.

I will say that the relationships and character scenes are what I enjoyed most about this book, and I'm floored that it's as much better than ACOTAR as it is. This book was clearly well-plotted and well-edited, and I had fun reading it.
