04 Slowing down & going back to move forward in my Korean journey
I think I started Korean with a routine that was just too much. I overdid it. Now it’s time to create a healthy enjoyable routine that I can stick to LONGTERM. I also need to slow down and go back to learning material I thought I left behind me for good. Since I was rushing in the beginning, a lot of material was left unfinished and not used in a way to reap the benefits from it: I used it in a passive way, an ”input way”. And because of this plus the rushing, I feel like a lot of useful vocabulary and sentence structures were not registered in my longterm memory. Using everything actively is harder than I thought and my brain seems to be a bloc of Swiss cheese.
So I need to climb down from my high horse, put my ego into the drawer and admit to myself: I need to go back to move forward. Because if there are cracks in the foundation like a lack of output (active use like writing and speaking/monologuing) and having more passive than active vocab, it will create problems later on. The cracks will grow bigger as I move forward and I will live in this illusion of being further than I actually am. You know, even if my reading and listening comprehension is better than my writing and speaking, it’s a wobbly foundation, because the difference is too big. I shouldn’t think of myself as being ”so intermediate baby yeah”. There are too many holes, too much I can’t recall in the second I need it, too much passive vocabulary rather than active one. I need to get all the aspects of the language to an +/- equal level and stuff the holes in the foundation.
Weak foundations will make the castle crumble. I don’t want that to happen.
Slowing down, going back, using (upper)beginner resources again, IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF and is not ”lowering” myself down to a less worthy level. It’s a good revision, it’s repetition, it’s learning new stuff. The awareness that I need to get stronger at the base to properly move forward is sth positive. And slowing down is not laziness, language learning is not a sprint anyway, so why not take my time, step by step and as a result enjoy it more. Sooner or later I will be where I want to be. I don’t care if it takes a few years longer, I’m not in the coffin yet lol, so let’s sail forward but first backwards.
xoxo,
A.

i genuinely love love love the iconoclast path in rogue trader SO MUCH. its one of the things that ultimately enamors me to the warhammer franchise as a whole despite empathy being so antithetical to its world and genre. its not just because iconoclast is the Nice Person route or because it subverts the foundational principle that In The Grim Dark Universe There Is Only War............ but mostly i love it because its the best way to actually engage w the morality system presented in 40k and explore it the way it deserves to be explored. its so unique parsing through the choices of the game and navigating how one might actually ACHIEVE goodness through - or more accurately without - the lens of liberal modern morality. because adhering to what we presently would call morality is arguably crueler than some of the dogmatic choices - or at least the game wants you to reflect on that and decide if that kind of morality still has value or not. and i like that they give you the opportunity to do that. youre rarely rewarded for kindness in this game and in fact your oftentimes actively punished for it (void shadows was a TRIAL for my iconoclast rt) which presents another question: are you being good because of a reward you believe you'lll be entitled to, or are you being good for the sake of goodness itself??? in saying that i do LOVE how there IS payoff in the iconoclast route eventually - when youve bleed and suffered for it enough. but theres a quality to it thats so..... so BITTERSWEET, because yippee you Empathed your way to the top - but also what IS the top?? congratulations, you are the kindest autocrat in the most bloodthirsty fascist regime in human history, sitting on your throne on a voidship run by all your slaves and serfs who die by the hundreds every time you make a warpjump for some dumbass sidequest. what the fuck. can you actually call that goodness ????? is whatever goodness-adjacent thing youve achieved worth it even if you cant change the system in the ways that matter ??? lastly - the iconoclast ending is both so wildly universe-altering to the point of feeling like a heretical ending - but also kind of. not mattering really lol. because even though its hopeful, the "good" ending still feels soooo tentative with the likelihood that its very likely not going to last. but that in itself is my favorite take away from playing this game as The Last Good Guy in the Galaxy: because the love DIDNT change anything. and it DOESNT save anyone. but ohhhhhhhhh my fucking god does it absolutely matter that it was there.

I like to post up to the image count limit in these reposts to avoid too many posts so I wasn't sure if to hold off on these two or not since verus hasn't updated in like a month and idk when the next one will be. they've said they do plan on continuing but I feel bad for being so late in sharing their work here so I figured I should post these now.

quick plug for the Spanish Boost YouTube account if you're a beginner/intermediate Spanish learner looking for comprehensible input (slow, easier to follow speech). I've mostly been watching the Minecraft videos so far (eyeing the Stardew Valley series 👀) but they've been just about perfect for my learning level, and it's fun because it's the kind of stuff I'd be watching on YouTube anyway

Japanese Reading Resources for Absolute Beginners
A question I encounter often is "How much Japanese should I study before I can begin reading in Japanese?"
From my experience as a learner and reader myself and from managing a Japanese book club for other learners I can honestly say that you can start way earlier than you probably think!
There are many resources that only require knowing hiragana. Those texts usually teach vocabulary through pictures and only use basic grammar.
Some are even simpler than that: The Japan Foundation's Hiragana Books are great for those, who are still remembering hiragana characters. Every short book introduces only 1-2 new characters, so it's a great reading exercise for those who've just started.
Tumblr media
The free graded reader 「どうぞ、どうも」 by the NPO Tagengo Tadoku only uses the words 「どうぞ」 and 「どうも」 to write an entire story. Again, this makes for a great exercise in reading hiragana and understanding context. Another "level 0" recommendation by the same NPO would definitely be 「しろい?くろい?」. This book uses the full range of hiragana characters but the grammar is simple and all used vocabulary is illustrated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another site with great resources for absolute beginners is Nihongo Tadoku Dōjō. If you have memorized both hiragana and katakana and know how the particles を and で work you will be able to read this text about stationary (ぶんぼうぐ) and understand everything by looking at the pictures!
Tumblr media
The resources linked so far can all be accessed completely free on the linked websites. If you have the money to spare, please also have a look at the box 「スタート」 from the series reberubetsu nihongo tadoku raiburarī published by the NPO Tagengo Tadoku and ASK (affiliate link). This box includes 8 little books in very simple Japanese.
Tumblr media
All these texts for absolute beginners will get you started reading in Japanese with very little knowledge of characters and vocabulary.
Reading in Japanese is a skill that requires practice. But once you get used to it, it can be such a valuable tool to reinforce new vocabulary and grammar. So please don't wait until you're "ready" before you start reading - start early at your own level!
