Two or three roads diverged in a yellow wood, now and then.
What was, what might or could or should be - the twists and turns of being.
I know it’s a cliché, yet, I have long been fascinated with Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Not Taken. This is, I believe associated with my interest in time travel. Two roads, sliding doors. That kind of thing. I also know that some people, perhaps most don’t think this way. They not interested in what might have been. I sometimes wonder why. One theory relates to my life trajectory. I have…

OBSCURE HORROR GAME PROTAGONIST BRACKET
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Obscure Horror Game Protagonist Bracket, where the "obscure" in the name is modifying the word "protagonist" and not the word "game".
We believe we have, after a decent amount of deliberation, come up with a wide range of characters, ranging from "Just Normal Guys" to "Insane Torture Murderers" to "an apple", some from games that are fairly obscure themselves and some from games that are actually pretty well known, but we believe all these somewhat arbitrarily chosen characters have one thing in common: If you referred to them by name while talking to any given random person, we've determined there's at least a 60-70% chance they won't know who you're talking about. And they're horror game protagonists. More or less. They all have two things in common. Kind of.
Due to the nature of the premise, it is likely that there will be some situations where you may not have any idea who these people are. To compensate for this, descriptions of the characters including any notable traits will be included with each poll. There's no shame in deciding which one you like better on the spot if it comes down to that.
Additionally, we would like you to please be wary that due to the nature of this being about horror game characters, sensitive subject matter will be mentioned in the descriptions of many of the characters, as it's often unavoidable. Similarly, there will be spoilers for the storylines of the games brought up here, if that matters to you.
But without further ado...
OUR ROUND 1 MATCH-UPS:
Cynte (Endoparasitic) vs. Blake Langermann (Outlast 2)
Ellis Lynch (Blair Witch) vs. Murphy Pendleton (Silent Hill: Downpour)
Michael Tapp (Saw 2: Flesh and Blood (Xbox 360)) vs. Daniel Lamb (Manhunt 2)
Benjamin Oliver Walker (SCP: Containment Breach) vs. Andy the Apple (Andy's Apple Farm)
Foxtrot Unit 1 Commander Sanders (SCP: Nine-Tailed Fox) vs. Eriko Christy (Illbleed)
Clancy Jarvis (Resident Evil 7: Banned Footage) vs. Simon Jarrett (SOMA)
Justine Florbelle (Amnesia: Justine) vs. Thomas Smith (Neverending Nightmares)
David Hoover (The Crooked Man) vs. Arthur Hastings (We Happy Few)
Round one will begin on May 1st, 2023.

Peter Benjamin Parker. Named after his wonderful uncle Ben that he adored with every fiber of his being. But, he didn’t feel like a Parker. He didn’t feel as if he deserved that name.
It’s Thanksgiving break, and as luck would have it, May is gone for the week. Some joke of a job that makes you have to go on training for an entire week, he thought. It’s quiet, way too quiet for a regular Saturday night. Last he checked, the avengers were here this weekend, claiming they all missed their favorite “spider kid”. So, then, why on earth is it so quiet?
The only other option is that he’s sleeping. Except, it’s not a peaceful sleep. It’s yet another nightmare that plagues the young spider’s mind. To which, it’s not uncommon, everyone in the avengers tower has nightmares, every single person there. So then why is it so surprising to everyone that he has them as well?
He tosses and turns in the bed that Mr. Stark so graciously let him sleep in, considering that he would buy anything Peter wanted, because he loves his kid so dearly. It’s a soft bed, extremely comfortable, feels like a giant marshmallow, so why does it feel so.. Different?
His breathing gets heavier as the seconds turn to minutes, tears slowly streaming down his face as he sleeps, but nonetheless, he still turns in his bed every 2.5 seconds.
Peter has nightmares all the time, ever since homecoming, so why is this one any different? Well, this time, it’s about Ben. After witnessing the death of the most important person in his life, he now resides in his slurred dreamlike state, wearing a crisp black and white suit, slightly stained with blood that isn’t his and stained with tears as he feels the bumpy concrete under him dig into his knees. His voice is raw, unfiltered, and full of emotions as he begs, cries, and pleads with the woman in front of him who looks like his dear aunt May, to allow him to say his final goodbye to the man in the coffin. The man who would still be alive if it weren't for Peter Benjamin parker.
He currently resides in the lucid state of sleep paralysis, his body betraying him as he lays still in his bed, coating his pillow with his flowing stream of tears. As he watches the world he knows and loves crumble to pieces, he sobs, his eyes bloodshot and puffy as he ruins the suit that he had to practically sell everything he owned to afford, he claws at the ground, with a grip so strong, he could tear the road open if he wanted to. He is scared, afraid even, and he wants to return to the real world. Away from this hellish nightmare he crawled into.
Meanwhile, the avengers are in Tony’s lab, having fun and playing cards as Tony works, focused on team bonding and fun to escape their problems. An alert pops on Tony's screen, something along the lines of the robotic voices of both Jarvis, Friday, and Karen, in unison, talking about his dear kid’s blood pressure going through the roof, at risk of a severe anxiety attack. Only problem was, Peter was asleep.
“Sir, would you like me to initiate the protocol ‘Spider-baby can’t sleep’?” Jarvis’ voice comes through the lab, the other avengers heads’ popping up at the sound of a speculated threat.
“Tones, what’s going on? You okay?” Rhodey’s voice cuts through the silence as Tony clears his throat.
“There's something wrong with Peter, I'll go check on him.” Tony replies, standing up, running a hand through his greasy hair, as he walks towards the elevator to go to Peter's floor, unbeknownst to him, the others following him like lost puppies.
Peter awakes from the state with a sharp gasp, clutching his chest so harshly that he leaves slight crescent shaped claw marks near his chest. The space around him spins, all of a sudden feeling very claustrophobic, when there’s a knock at the door.
“Son of Tony, the robotic woman has alerted friend Stark of your troubles. We have come to your aid.” Thor’s voice echoes into the room, but Peter can only hear certain parts. The room only stops spinning when he spots a shorter figure walking up to him, crouching next to him.
“Underoos. Hey, what’s going on? C’mon, talk to me, kid.” Tony reaches out to console the boy in a soft, almost condescending tone, one that Peter knows all too well.
“Mter Star- can- can breath..” Peter’s voice comes out in a hushed whisper. He’s convinced everyone in the doorway can hear how loudly and harshly his heart is beating out of his chest.
“Legolas, hit the lights, would you?” Tony whispers, waving his hand at his hard of hearing team mate.
The lights come on and Tony's heart shatters at the sight. Here in front of Tony, sits Peter,  his face a bloody red, his eyes bloodshot and dilated, tears streaming down his face as the poor boy clutches his chest, small faint traces of blood leaking into his nails from how hard he’s clutching his chest.
“Pete, hey, look at me. I’m right here. Can I touch you?” He whispers, reaching his hand out, hesitating ever so slightly.
Peter scans his mentor's face, hating the way it softens as it scans Peter's face in fear.
No words come out of Peter's mouth as his ragged breathing gets worse, terrified of knowing what Mister Stark would think of him. His eyes dart around, scanning each face he sees for each individual reaction. Every single minute detail of someone’s facial expression gets taken into account.
“Come on, breathe with me. Ready? Deep breath in,” Tony takes an exaggerated breath in, the trembling teen trying his best to mimic his mentor’s actions, tears still streaming down his face as he buries his face into his hands, continuously wiping the salty tears that fall.
“Out. You’re doing great, spidey, let’s try again.” Tony’s overly calm voice rings in Peter’s ears as he eventually calms down, and yet he can’t seem to open his mouth as he stares straight past the avengers, burning a hole into the wall with his gaze.
“Hey, focus up, kid. What’s going on?” Rhodey’s hand on his back pulls him out of his thoughts, as he stares at everyone currently in his room, his face getting progressively more red in embarrassment, even though no one could tell, his face was already extremely red from sobbing his eyes out.
“It’s nothing, just a stupid dream. I really didn’t mean for this to happen, honest.” He replies, trying to blink away the burning feeling in his eyes.
“Don’t give me that crap. Come on, ‘roos, one way or another I’m gonna get the answer out of you, so just spill the beans.” Tony interjects, and Peter looks him in his eyes, looking for any sign of deception, looking away after a split second when he doesn’t see any.
“It was stupid, really. Just a dumb nightmare.” The boy mutters under his breath, too embarrassed to even speak.
“It may sound dumb to you, but I can tell you right now, every single person in this room right now, has nightmares. Each and every one of us. Yours count just as much as ours do. So, come on, lay it on us. There’s very little secrets when it comes to us. We gossip so much, it’d put the Mean Girls to shame.” Bucky argues, his last point getting a small laugh from everyone, and Steve cuts in, “Why do you think Buck and I share a room? It’s ‘cause we’re the only two strong enough to hold each other down. Our nightmares get violent, really easily.”
“It’s just.. Ben. I miss him so much. I could have saved him, I don't know, it just makes me think. If I never got bit by the spider, would Ben still be alive? I don’t know, I just think about him sometimes. It’s been almost 4 years and I still haven’t gotten over it.” Peter sniffs, his eyes glancing to his phone, looking at the strange ‘You okay?’ text from his adoring aunt May.
“Did you.. Uh.. you texted May?” He asks, to which, Tony sifts a hand through his hair.
“Oh, yeah. I didn’t really know what to do, so I texted her. To which, she told me you have these nightmares all the time. Apparently, they’re way worse at your apartment than they are here. Aunt Hottie told me you’ve gotten noise complaints from screaming?” Tony’s eyes furrow, glancing over his kid, wondering why the hell for the love of god, he can’t have a normal life.
“Yeah…the landlord said if it happens again, he’s kicking us out..haha..so..I don’t sleep. Or, well, when I do, it’s outside of the apartment. Can’t risk it.” Peter laughs airly, running a hand through his sweaty hair, scratching at his scalp. Tony makes a mental note to secretly find their landlord in an alleyway. Either that or convince May to move into the tower, there’s more than enough room for them.
“Why don’t you come down to the lab with us? We’re playing cards. Just until you feel sleepy again?” Steve suggests and Peter nods, following Steve out of the room.
The rest of them trail out of the room, simultaneously looking at each other, suggesting the same thing:
Peter needs therapy, bad. Also, his landlord better hope and pray they don't find themselves in an empty alleyway at 3 am. As Peter walks with Steve, his hand ruffling the young spider’s hair, he thinks two things.
One, how can you be a hero if you can’t save the people you love? And two, how could a man like Benjamin Parker, see something other than a pathetic, wannabe, no-good cursed boy, who kills everyone he comes into contact with, in his adoring nephew, Peter Benjamin Parker?
Peter makes a mental note to leave later that morning to visit Ben’s grave, but he can’t help but wonder if Ben would even recognize the person who is speaking to him; Peter Benjamin Parker, a hollow boy, plagued by grief.

Hey there! ^^ I don't even know if you answer questions like this but was just curious who you imagine or "fancast" as Draco? I really like Benjamin Jarvis and sometimes Dominik Sadoch or Jeremy Dufour!
Hi anon! Ohh I love those🔥 my answer might be a bit anti-climatic but I don’t really fancast my ships. I’ve entertained some ideas for next gen (Al, James and Teddy) but never for Drarry. I guess it’s because there are so many different takes and characterizations in fic (I love them all!) I find it easier to picture their faces in a very abstract, almost art-like, way. Speaking of art, depending on their age, hair length 👌🏼 and fic vibes my personal headcanon shifts between @bluebutter-art’s characterization and @zigster-ao3’s characterization. @blvnk-art has also created some of my favourite adult Harry versions. I’d love to see others joining this convo and sharing their face cast names!

Finding history on the tube
As a television viewer, I am always in a history mood. I don't care if a movie or series covers the French Revolution or the Vietnam War, I want it. I want to lose myself in another time. So it was with great interest I found four outstanding series on FX, Hulu, and Apple TV.
Shōgun, Masters of the Air, Franklin, and Manhunt are not just entertaining. They are history classes worthy of any college.
Shōgun follows John Blackthorne, a stranded British sailor, as he becomes embroiled in a feudal power struggle in Japan in 1600. Masters chronicles the "Bloody 100th," a U.S. B-17 bomber group that sustained horrific losses in World War II. Franklin covers Benjamin Franklin's diplomatic efforts in France during the American Revolution. Manhunt follows Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's search for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's assassination.
Each miniseries debuted this year. Each is a splendid adaptation of a celebrated book. Each sticks close to the historical record.
None are dry history. Thanks to strong performances by Cosmo Jarvis (Blackthorne), Austin Butler (Major 'Buck' Cleven), Michael Douglas (Franklin), and Tobias Menzies (Stanton), the series are as entertaining as they are informative. Add strong supporting casts, stories, scripts, and cinematography and you have outstanding television.
Each series can be hard to follow. Shōgun, Masters of the Air, and Manhunt feature a large number of characters. Shōgun and Franklin require following subtitles closely. In Shōgun, a viewer can easily get lost in the nuances of 17th-century Japanese culture. Even so, the plusses of all four productions far outweigh their negatives.
I would recommend each series to lovers of history and great TV. Ratings: Shōgun 5/5, Masters 5/5, Franklin 4.8/5, Manhunt 4.5/5.

New Work!
I've got a new work I'll have below the cut. I need help though. I'm not sure what to rate it and what kinds of general tags to use to post on AO3. You can suggest in the tags. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
(NOT LOOKING FOR CRITICISMS OR GRAMMER HELP, THANKS!)
Work Title: Slowly
Fandom: Avengers, Iron Man
Characters: Tony Stark
Mentions: Howard & Maria Stark, Edwin and Ana Jarvis, Peggy Carter, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Happy Hogan, Pepper Potts, Wanda Maximoff, Steve Rogers
Implied: James "Bucky" Barnes
Relationships, Implied: Tony/Pepper
Notes: This is weird and needs quite a bit of base material knowledge. This was spawned listening to "Let Me Down Slowly" by Alec Benjamin, hence the title. I did chop up the lyrics throughout this. That was kinda fun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It always seemed like everyone Tony met was always jalf-way out the door.
His parents, Howard and Maria Stark.
The Jarvis’, Edwin-the-butler and Ana-the-cook.
His godmother, Peggy Carter.
Rhodey… His first true friend…
So, he perfected the art of leaving first.
Let me down,
                                 down
Let me down, down
Let me down…
One night stands became his move. Drunk, sloppy, and forgettable in all the ways that didn’t matter. (“Generous lover,” they’ll say. “But you’re Jessica, Chelsea, or Sam for the night. Never the name you actually have.”)
Tony knows part of the reason Pepper- his assistant/CEO- and Happy- his driver/head of security- have stayed as long as they have, is because they’re on his payroll.
Let me down,
                                 down
Let me down, down
Let me down…
For just once, he wished someone would stay for him and nothing else.
Tony shoves that foolish wish to the deep recesses of his mind. To be forgotten.
Let me down,
                                 down
Let me down, down
Let me down…
He was wrong.
(Don’t cut me down, throw me out, leave me to waste)
SHIELDRA/The Witch/ULTRON/Lagos/Accords
Blow after blow.
Pepper.
Pepper couldn’t handle him anymore. Romance dead between then.Friendship hanging on by a professional-courtesy thread.
Vienna/Romania/Leipzig/RAFT/Siberia
(I once was a man with dignity and grace)
Steve.
Beautiful Steve.
Howard’s Gold Standard.
Blue eyes, stone cold.
[“He was my friend.” “So was I.”]
Just once.
He wished.
Just once.
That someone would let him down slowly if they were leaving.
(And I can’t stop myself from fallin’ (down)
                                                                                           down)
Every time, he knows there is no one there to catch him. Not even himself.
The liberation of Vernichtungslager Auschwitz, January 1945
* * * *
Auschwitz remembrance day. I always think when people are being excused for poor behavior by difficulties that some people were kind, some were generous, some were heroic in Auschwitz. And I know people who are with us now who have been graceful, calm, generous in the most terrible circumstances, Jarvis on death row, refugees, friends with HIV+ and other harsh medical conditions, friends who survived murder attempts and serial abuse, friends who are in the various categories of people who are not just oppressed, that vague word, but targeted for harm, because of their race or immigration status or religion or because they’re trans or because they stood up in countries that cut you down for doing that.
From Hope in the Dark: “There’s a wonderful parable by Jorge Luis Borges. In the last years of the thirteenth century, God tells a leopard in a cage, “You live and will die in this prison so that a man I know of may see you a certain number of times and not forget you and place your figure and symbol in a poem which has its precise place in the scheme of the universe. You suffer captivity, but you will have given a word to the poem.
”One day in Auschwitz, the writer Primo Levi recited a canto of Dante’s Inferno to a companion, and the poem about hell reached out from six hundred years before to roll back Levi’s despair and his dehumanization. It was the canto about Ulysses, and though it ends tragically, it contains the lines “You were not made to live like animals/But to pursue virtue and know the world,” which he recited and translated to the man walking with him. Levi lived, and wrote marvelous books of his own, poetry after Auschwitz in the most literal sense.
In 1940, in his last letter to a friend before his death, the incomparable, uncategorizable German-Jewish essayist and theorist Walter Benjamin wrote, “Every line we succeed in publishing today—no matter how uncertain the future to which we entrust it—is a victory wrenched from the powers of darkness.”
