Enjoy Chapter 2!

Home for Delilah was a small, aging modular house tucked away in an urban suburb in eastern Pensacola. It previously belonged to Andre’s father, and it served as a fairly decent abode for the young couple ever since they got engaged nearly two years ago. Andre had been living there for a decade, moving in to work at his uncle’s auto shop immediately after graduating from high school. It wasn't the most luxurious of dwellings, but it beat the miniscule space she’d been crammed in with her father, mother and older sister for years, so Delilah really couldn't complain.
Rolling her eyes at her mother’s wedding-laden text message, she pulled her keys from her pocket, guided it into the lock and pushed open the door. Closing it firmly behind her, she leaned back against it, shutting out the rest of the world for the rest of the day. Hanging her hooded jacket on the hook by the door, she kicked off her sneakers and dumped them in the corner along with her gym bag, knowing she put them in their proper place, but was too tired and hungry to worry about that right then.
She wandered into the kitchen, ignoring the small stack of unopened bills on the countertop, and opened the refrigerator. The three pieces of leftover chicken and half-full bottle of red wine wasn’t going to cut it. Sadly, ordering takeout was a bit of a luxury right now, so she had to make do with whatever she could find in the refrigerator and the pantry. Luckily, her mother had ensured that both of her daughters became creative enough cooks to see through any food shortage, which, these days, occurred more often than Delilah liked to admit. So, retrieving as many ingredients as she could find, she set about making dinner for herself and Andre, a peace offering of sorts after their turbulent morning.
It had been a stressful last few months, combining her wrestling classes with numerous double shifts at both her jobs to make ends meet. Adding the equally demanding task of planning her wedding was not helping. More frustrating, at least, according to Andre, was the fact that their nuptial plans were being delayed by her so-called ambitions, chipping away at what little income they both earned. Delilah truly wished he could see the big picture, or at the very least, show a little more support. He, of all people, should have her back. That the rest of the townspeople thought she was out of her mind didn’t mean that he had to agree with them.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard the front door open. Knowing who it was, her insides clenched a little with apprehension, wondering, perhaps hopeful even, that her fiancé would be in a reconciliatory mood. The footsteps coming from the living area got louder as they got nearer. Delilah diverted her focus from the saucepan to watch Andre stroll into the kitchen. and despite the tension that had been brewing between them all day, her heart couldn’t help but welcome the affection that rushed over her for him.
Tumblr media
Andre Gibson had been every girl’s fantasy once upon a time. Still was, if Delilah was being honest. He was yet to lose any of the physical traits that made him so desirable back in high school. Just hitting six feet, his body was lean and toned from years of doing most of the heavy lifting at his father’s landscaping business. They were inseparable when they were younger; the best thing about school for her was sneaking out to hang out with him, making out with him in the bleachers after basketball games. It was like Heaven for Delilah, elated to be in a spot so many girls were dying to be in. The romance continued after high school, to Delilah’s pleasant surprise, culminating in his proposal two years ago on her twenty-second birthday. And now here they were, living together as soon-to-be man and wife.
“Hey,” he mumbled, rubbing a dirt-streaked hand over his tired face. His worn shirt was unbuttoned with his toned abs on display, and he dumped his backpack on the ground against the wall by the back door.
“Hey,” Delilah returned his greeting. “You’re home early. How did your day go?”
His tired sigh preceded his reply. “Same old, same old. We had one breakthrough though. Pops and I finally completed Mrs. Whelan’s garden.”
“Oh yeah, I remember you talking about that,” she said, stirring the contents in the skillet. “That’s great. I’m glad to know you finally pulled it off.”
“Same here, babe.” He came up behind her, peering over her shoulder. “What’cha got cookin’?”
“Improvising a little with the leftover chicken,” she started, pausing when his hands cupped her hips and his lips met her shoulder. And right away, she knew what this was. This was his way of apologizing about this morning; showing her affection without saying a word. That was the thing about her relationship with Andre. There was something special about the way that they didn't have to speak to know what the other was thinking. They fought, then acted like nothing had ever happened when they got back together. She felt he was in the wrong for this argument, but she wasn’t expecting an apology…no apologies were ever really exchanged afterwards…Everything just went back to normal, seemingly papering over the cracks, in Delilah’s humble opinion. But it kept the peace, so it was better if she kept that little discrepancy to herself.
“Now that we know how your day went, you wanna hear about mine?” she asked.
Chuckling to himself, Andre pushed gently away from her. “Sure, babe,” he said, “How was training today?”
“Tough as fuck,” Delilah grumbled, as Andre grabbed a glass and held it underneath the kitchen faucet. “Tank’s not letting up, even with two days to go till my match. But you’ll never believe who showed up at the warehouse today.”
“You really want me to guess?”
“Maybe not,” she conceded with a giggle, her eyes brightening with excitement as she recalled their brief meeting. “Jey Uso! Jey Uso of all people, Dre!”
Andre raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Am I supposed to know who that is?”
“He’s a big shot in the WWE. One of the top guys in the entire company,” she explained, even though it would most likely fall on deaf ears. “And the coolest part is he’s from right here. Raised in Pensacola just like we were.”
“That’s nice,” Andre responded with a nonchalant, almost bored tone as he settled down at the kitchen table. Delilah was well aware that Andre didn’t watch wrestling. He always called it fake and childish, but that opinion changed slightly when Delilah returned home from her very first class with bruises all over her body. She’d hoped he’d take interest in it, if only for her sake, but that didn’t look like it was happening anytime soon.
She finished making dinner and set a plate in front of him, shredded caramelized chicken with white rice and fresh tomato salad. It wasn’t gourmet, but Delilah had done what she could with what little they had. “Mm, smells good,” Andre complimented, grabbing his cutlery to dig in. Delilah sat beside him, casting pensive glances at him as she ate, pondering the right time to ask him a burning question. It was a few bites into her meal when she decided now was the right time.
“You know, you still ain’t told me if you’re coming to see my match or not,” she spoke up.
Andre’s cutlery ceased their skittering across his plate, and he averted his gaze. Delilah detected his answer right away, and her shoulders dropped. “You’re not,” she sighed, shaking her head.
“I didn’t say that,” he said quickly, “But you do understand why I won’t be able to make it, babe. You know what work is like for me these days.”
“I’ve been talking about this for weeks, Dre! You know how important this is to me! It’s my very first match! It’s in two days. Or did you forget that too?” Angrily, she stabbed her fork into a piece of chicken, trying not to imagine it was her fiancé’s eyeball. “You know what? Forget it. You don’t gotta come if you don’t want to.”
Andre started to counter her, but stopped, thinking twice about it. The last thing he wanted was yet another fight, because this was exactly how it always started. They’d been arguing a lot lately, and honestly? He was already over it. “Look…I’ll do my best to make it to your match,” he said.
“Yeah right,” Delilah rolled her eyes, ignoring the glimmer of hope that bloomed within her. “I ain’t holdin’ my breath, that’s for sure.”
“Come on, babe, I’m for real. I’ll clear out my schedule. I’ll set a reminder on my phone and stuff. I promise. Just gimme the details and I’m on it.” He stared at her with pleading eyes, determined to keep the peace between them. It had been a long, tense day, and in-house tension was the last thing he needed.
Delilah smiled, finally. “Fine. I can work with that,” she agreed. “Now finish up. Your mom sent me a few ideas on places we can have the reception. And after that…If you’re a good boy, maybe later, I’ll show you a new move I learned today.” She leaned closer to him, whispering in his ear, “In bed.”
The hand she’d placed on his thigh suggested volumes, and the tantalizing prospect made Andre smile, “Sounds like a plan, babe.” And with that, things were back to normal.
Or so they both wanted to believe.
-----------------
The next morning…
Good thing she didn’t hold her breath in the end.
As Delilah dumped the heavy weights on the ground, she let out a loud growl, trying to release the tension surging through her body. She paced back and forth frantically as she glanced around the small gym, looking for what else to take out her anger on. Every muscle in her body was begging for mercy, but she couldn't stop. She had to take her frustrations out on something, otherwise she would take it out on someone, preferably Andre. Luckily, the gym was relatively empty, sparing some poor soul from her unwarranted wrath.
Fucking coward. He couldn’t even tell her to her face that he’d changed his mind about coming to her show. If that was even his intention in the first place. He’d scribbled some lame ass excuse on a piece of paper while she slept, and left it on his side of the bed before scurrying off to work. He was long gone by the time she woke up, presenting her with fewer reasons to trust her future husband.
The music blaring in her ears made it impossible for Delilah to hear or see anyone around her. And the anger she was feeling made her essentially ignore her surroundings. So it took her completely aback when she turned towards the direction of the punching bags only to run smack into a brick wall. "What the fuck!"
Josh smirked slightly as he took a step back, watching her yank the buds out of her ears. "Ay, my bad, on me," he apologized, chuckling at the discombobulated look on her face. "Thought you saw me comin’."
"Clearly not. You ain’t that hard to miss," Delilah snapped, tearing the fingerless gloves off her hands. "What are you even doing here?" she shot, noting vaguely that he didn’t look dressed for a workout. The man who had, just the day before, seemed imposing and breath-taking, was now just another testosterone-filled asshole standing in her way, like her fiancé.
Josh crossed his tattooed arms and stared at her. "Relax," he smiled. "Thought I would stop by and see how you were feelin' about tomorrow night, but I guess that's pretty obvious," he said, eyeing her up and down. He’d been on the mark about her body…bangin’ was an understatement. He forced himself to maintain eye contact to avoid staring at her nipples protruding through her sports bra.
Delilah grabbed the bottle of water sat on the nearby bench, unscrewing the cap and taking a few gulps. There was more than one reason she was feeling the way she was, and none of them put the butterflies in her stomach at ease. "I don’t even know why I’m trippin’," she shrugged. "I'm only jobbin' out anyway. Why would I want him to see me lose?"
“Want who to see you lose?” Josh inquired.
Delilah pursed her lips, contemplating whether she should answer or not. “My fiancé.”
He regretted asking. “Oh. Right. Tank said something like that,” he mumbled.
Delilah stared up at the huge man with narrowed eyes. “You and Tank talked about me?”
“Not the way you think,” Josh quickly clarified at her suspicious expression. “He has a lot of faith in you, which is why you ain’t gotta worry so much about tomorrow. You’ll be fine.”
"You make it sound so easy-breezy,” Delilah groaned, shoving her sweaty hair away from her equally sweaty face. “Maybe if one of us got hurt, the fans will have something to remember the match by."
Now it was Josh's turn to roll his eyes. Damn rookies. "Yeah, then you’ll be the fragile weakling nobody wanna work with. I know Tank taught you better than that," he countered. "Look, it ain’t all about winning and losing, not right now anyway. It’s about making an impression on your audience. The fans need a reason to keep watching you, and the suits need a reason they should hire you to wrestle. So everything you do in that ring matters. As long as your match is entertaining as fuck and you don’t kill anyone, that’s all they’ll care about."
Raising an eyebrow, Delilah chuckled. "Right. I’ll keep that in mind for tomorrow," she said. Biting her lip in contemplation, she met his eyes again and fought the urge to swoon.
"Ay, it’s okay to be nervous. You gotta phase that out, though,” he added. “And whatever you got going on at home, put that shit aside until after the match."
It was a little unnerving how well he’d read her. “Easier said than done,” she scoffed.
For a second, Josh thought about prying, but decided against it. "Wanna know what I was like the morning of my very first match?" He watched her countenance perk up, giving him a curious half-smile that he thought was insanely attractive. "I got so nervous, thinkin’ and worryin’ about the match and shit, that I forgot my bag with my wrestling gear in it. Boots and all. I didn’t realize it until I got to the arena," he explained. “I had to rush back home, and the traffic was so crazy, I didn’t get back to the arena until about ten minutes before my match. That shit sucked ass, man.”
Nibbling on her bottom lip again, Delilah eyed Josh with awe as he spoke, his understanding words and softer eyes putting her more at ease than before. To think that the great Jey Uso had felt this jittery before his first match made her feel like they had a little more in common now.
"I really want this, ya know?" she said, relaxing some more as she confided in him. "I've always wanted this. I had a later start than most, I’ll admit, and I’m playing catch-up. That’s why I'm busting my ass so hard," she admitted. "There’s no room for error, Jey. I gotta be perfect."
Licking his lips subconsciously, Josh watched her take another sip of her water, some of it escaping her lips and trickling down the valley between her breasts, and felt a tightness deep in his gut. "Perfection don’t exist, baby girl, not in pro wrestling," he pointed out, his eyes reactively sweeping down the curves of her body before he spoke again. "Look, if Tank thinks you ready for this, then you ready," he said.
Delilah sighed heavily. She could only hope Tank was right. As she picked up her towel and bag off of the floor, she stopped short, and then turned to face him again. “Wait…Did you just call me baby girl?” she asked him.
A smirk twitched at the corner of his lips. “Sorry. Bad habit. I meant no disrespect. If I offended you, I'm sorry.” He stepped closer to her. “Forgive me?”
Delilah swallowed, taking a few steps of her own backwards. She noticed his lips twitch again in amusement. “Uh…yeah. Sure.”
Josh smiled. “Preciate that, Delilah.” He backed away. “I’ll see you tomorrow night. Think about what I said, a’ight?”
She watched him walk away from her and out of the gym, so many questions on the tip of her tongue. Her hand tightened over her water bottle, and she suddenly felt the need to take a cold shower, or two.

part one - indecision cookies
“C’mon, M&M! You’re not deciding on purpose! Just to be annoying!”
She knows he’s teasing; they’ve been friends for over a decade. That doesn’t stop the hurt from bubbling in her stomach or keep her from snapping at him. “Yeah, Reuben! That’s exactly what I’m doing! I’m purposefully going down to the wire on a decision that will change everything in my life just so I can piss you off!”
Guilt settles in her chest the second she finishes. It’s not his fault she can’t make a choice. “I’m sor-”
“No. Don’t apologize. I shouldn’t have made the joke. I know this is stressing you out.” She can hear him pacing through his house. As long as she’d known him, he had walked at the same volume as an elephant. “I know it’s a big change, and there’s a lot of things to consider, but what’s going on?”
“Nothing. I made indecision cookies. So you know… I’m basically there.”
“Wow, okay, never once have you been close to making a choice and made those. So, that literally does nothing except give you delicious cookies to eat. Which is great, but it’s already been a month, and I can’t even tell which way you’re leaning.”
It’s only been twenty-one days. Her brain interjects, but she doesn’t voice the thought, knowing her best friend won’t appreciate the correction.
It’s been twenty-five days since she flew from Pensacola to San Diego. Twenty-four days since she spent the evening with Danielle, Reuben, and his teammates. Twenty-three days since she interviewed for a new position. Twenty-two since she was offered the job, one that came with a big salary increase, better benefits, a higher security clearance requirement, and a thirty-day decision deadline. Twenty-one days since she returned home, a serious case of imposter syndrome setting in, mixing with her anxiety.
“I haven’t decided because I can’t figure out the right answer. It’s a great opportunity, and I know I’d enjoy the work, but it’s such a huge change, and frankly, I don’t know if it’s worth moving across the country. I like what I do now, I’m settled here, and I’m finally starting to make real friends instead of just having acquaintances from work. It’s taken-” A crash interrupts her. “Reuben! What was that?! Are you okay?”
“I tripped over Boo-Boo and almost took out the side table. Stupid ass cat.” She can hear him fighting with the fat, orange tabby under his breath. “I’m fine. Keep going; we’re listening.”
“You were probably in his way!”
“Stop defending the cat! He can’t hear you, and he was in the wrong! And stop deflecting. You were saying it’s taken…”
“It’s taken me four years to get comfortable, to this point where I’m not spending all my free time alone in my apartment. I move, and I have to start all over again. With everything. The search for where to live. Getting comfortable with the job. Making friends.”
“You have plenty of friends out here already!”
“You and Danielle don’t count; we’ve known each other since freshman year.” Her voice is flat, already knowing where his argument is going.
“Okay, fine! You’re friends with Mickey. And you liked Natasha and Bob! Plus, there’s Rooster and the rest of the Dagger Squad!”
“Reuben, knowing your team’s callsigns and spending a few hours drinking with them when I was out there doesn’t mean I actually know them or that we’re friends.”
“Yeah, true, but they’re good people, and you’ll get along with all of them. And you’ll make friends of your own! What I’m saying is that you’re not starting over with friends; you’ve got a foundation to build on, so that’s one less thing to worry about.”
“Okay, well, I’m also thirty-three and not getting any younger. I’d like to have a family one day; I want a husband, a few kids, and maybe a dog. That dream gets harder to achieve if I have to start over again.”
“Is this because of your parents?” Danielle’s voice is a surprise.
“Damn it, Fitch! Have you had me on speakerphone this whole time?!”
“I told you we were listening!”
“I thought you meant the damn cat!”
“Why would I mean the cat?”
“Because you’re an idiot-”
“As fun as it is to listen to the two of you argue.” Danielle’s scolding cuts them off before it can devolve into a repeat of The Incident of 2013. “Let’s get back to my question. Is this indecision because of your parents?”
“No! Why would you even think that?”
“For starters, you’ve never mentioned kids before!”
Danielle smooths over her husband’s indignant statement. “We know it’s something your parents harp on you about.”
The understatement of the decade.
Mary’s family is a large group of stereotypical Italian immigrant Catholics from New York. Thirty-one people on her father’s side came from Sicily through Ellis Island in the late nineteenth century and settled in East Harlem. The men worked municipal projects, performing back-breaking labor to build bridges and dig subway tunnels, while the women suffered through the dangerous working conditions of the Manhattan garment factories. The family worked hard, the entire brood saving money to open a bakery just like they had back home. Vertucci’s Bakery – named for the family – opened in 1925 and was an instant success; people waited in lines that went out the door to get a taste of the old country. As the family grew, so did the bakery; everyone working to churn out bread, cakes, and pastries as fast as possible. Eventually, they outgrew the first shop, moving to a bigger location in Brooklyn the same year Mary’s father was born.
The other side of her family, the Romanos, immigrated just before World War II. Settling in Carroll Gardens, Mary’s great-grandfather was a dock worker at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, while her great-grandmother took care of the children and worked as a seamstress out of their apartment. Through the generations and the gentrification, the family stayed in Brooklyn, enjoying the strong Italian community.
Carlo and Lisa met on a busy Saturday morning when he was working Vertucci’s front counter. They fell in love quickly and were married just over a year later. Four boys in the four years after they were married, with Mariella “Mary” Vertucci following several years after the twins. She was a happy mistake. Wording that never failed to make her feel like she was two inches tall.
Despite being the youngest by ten years, as the only daughter Mary was subject to the most guilt trips and punishments growing up, her brothers seemingly unable to do no wrong in the eyes of the rest of the family.
When she was little, she didn’t eat enough food, and the women of her family criticized her for being too skinny. Then with puberty, she gained weight, and suddenly she was eating too much food. The yelling she had to endure when she went away to school - the first one in her family to do so - practically shattered the windows in her parent’s living room. Her mother was exceptionally upset because she had found a nice Italian boy for Mary to date, one who didn’t care that she was chubby. Constant complaints about distance when she moved to Missouri after graduation to work for Boeing, where she learned the ins and outs of all the mechanical systems of the Navy’s top fighter jets and worked on maintenance procedures to keep them running. The knock-down-drag-out screaming matches when she announced that she was being transferred to Florida to act as a senior engineering liaison between the company and the Navy, not once receiving any congratulations for her impressively quick advancement.
Not to mention all the subtle implications that she was a bad daughter for not producing grandchildren yet. Despite all of her brothers being married and having provided numerous grandchildren.
“I love kids, I’ve always wanted them, but given my luck with relationships, they’ve always kinda been a pipe dream. And I barely talk to my family anymore, my parents, least of all, no one knows I’m up for a new job. Only a few people here even know I went to California, and they all think I just went for a long weekend to visit some old friends.”
“If you take the job, when are you gonna tell them you’re moving to California?”
She snorts, “I’ll just call Danny’s wife as I’m about to get on the plane, and she’ll do all the work. By the time I touch down in San Diego, the entire Vertucci network will be informed of the address change.”
“You’d do that to your favorite brother?”
Danny is her favorite by default. Being the oldest meant he usually could be counted on to stop the other three from being too brutal in their taunts, but he also joined the teasing as much as he stopped it.
“He left my name off the Mother’s Day bouquet last year; this’ll make us even.”
“You didn’t chip in for flowers?” Reuben sounds shocked, knowing the importance of Mother’s Day flowers in the Vertucci family.
“No, I did. I covered Michael’s portion, too; that’s when Mia was going through treatment. He forgot to put my name on the card.”
“Wow…”
“Yeah, surprised me too. Especially when I got a call at the ass crack of dawn the next day, asking why I was ignoring the woman who gave me life on the most important day of the year.”
“Not to interrupt this venting session, but we still haven’t gotten to why you’re holding back on making a decision.” Danielle interrupts.
Mary hesitates, embarrassed to tell her closest friends about the problem. “I just keep thinking about the worst things that could happen. Which I know is stupid, and it’s just making my anxiety act up even more, but I can’t stop thinking about what could go wrong.”
“Well, that’s obviously not working, so what about the best things that could happen? I can kick Reuben out if you want. He doesn’t need to know everything.”
“Hey! She’s my best friend, too! And I’ve known her longer than you!”
“Only by six months! And you wouldn’t have become friends if she hadn’t taken pity on you and forced you to be her lab partner.”
“Let's see, good things… good things.” She interrupts the argument over who is her bestest friend. “Well, I could live near both my best friends for the first time since college. I could live in the same town as my goddaughter for the first time in her life. I could end up loving the job - not just tolerating it - and work there until I retire. The time difference could be good. I might be able to have a better relationship with my family if there’s extra distance between us. I could…”
She trails off, simultaneously feeling silly about what her next sentence would be and also afraid saying it out loud would jinx it.
“You could?” Danielle gently prods.
I could fall in love. I could be happy.
Her answer is just above a whisper, “I could be happy.”
Reuben gently breaks the silence that follows her vulnerable wish. “Are you not happy now?”
“I’m content. Which is good, but it’s not the same as being happy.”
“What do you think it would take for you to be happy?”
“I really don’t know… Force myself to make some changes? Shake things up?”
“Shit, I hear Annabeth waking up from her nap, but - and I’m sure you’ve already had this thought - but if you think shaking things up could help, I think you have the answer about the job.” Crying crackles over the baby monitor. “Okay, I’m gone. Love you - text me later!”
“Love you too, Dani!”
“So… what are you thinking?”
“How would you feel about turning the office into an official guest room while I find a place to live?”
“As long as you join the diaper-changing rotation, I think we could swing that.”
“Deal.”

This week I finished reading “A Moveable Feast” by Hemingway.
My first introduction to Hemingway was when I lived in the town of Pensacola, Florida. On the boardwalk over the bridge, one of the popular restaurants that overlooked the bay was called Hemingway’s Island Grill. Before eating here, I had heard of Hemingway but never had ready anything by him. The atmosphere of the restaurant—and its menu “inspired by Hemingway's thirst for adventure and great food”—made me curious about the man in the photographs on the walls. Then around the same time, I watched the movie “Midnight in Paris,” and I have to say—Corey Stoll did a fantastic job with the characterization; I can see that now that I’ve read this book.
As I read this book, I could understand why the Hemingway’s restaurant chose its theme, and why Stoll portrayed him with the voice and mannerisms he did. This man was a tough one, no question. And as a woman in a different era, I can’t say I admired his treatment of his wife and son in every chapter. His tone is consistently brash and stern and I could sense some pride and self-centeredness in the mix of qualities he expressed. But at the same time, I admired him for other reasons. He was honest, direct, open, straightforward, and nothing he said or did was a mystery or purposeless. When he reminisced, he could acknowledge his failures and weaknesses in the past. And when he spoke about others, he represented them fairly and sincerely according to his own perspective—the good ones he called good, and the bad ones he called bad, and he always seemed to know which was which from the start. He was positive and as untroubled as he could be, speaking of his times of poverty and struggle with casual candor, not expressing fear of the future.
More than that, he wasn’t an unkind man. He was blunt and proud and a cheater, but he supported his friends and emphasized their best features and was patient with them always. (Looking at you, Scott.) My purpose in reading this was to learn about Paris in the 1920s from the perspective of a man who was there. Hemingway wasn’t just there, he was there. He understood the city and the people and the world in a way that was unique to his own mind. And reading this book was like reading his personal journal. It wasn’t a story; it was a decade in a life. And I really enjoyed getting to know this man’s life. Cheers, Ernest.

word count: 1.7k+

notes: this is an installment of a larger au that will be written here on my blog. a similar au is being posted to peachy and i’s shared blog.
Tumblr media
There’s a sharp sound ringing in his ears. Matt reaches over to hit the snooze button on his alarm clock next to the bed. 7am. The morning still lays thick outside. It’s barely a sunrise, but it’s quiet and still as he sits up in his bed. He rubs his eyes and slides his glasses on. Matt rubs a palm against his chest as he stands, sauntering quietly across the hall to wash his face and brush his teeth. When he catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror, he sees the fading bruises of his last encounter with Sunny— the ones she left right over his heart and left him with their first I love you.
He brushes his hair and pulls on his hoodie, his jeans feel just a little too tight these days. He takes a glance over himself in the mirror and then he pulls his phone out to check the time. He sees the little puffer fish emoji she had sent him this morning, their unsung agreement instead of a typical good morning. It always warmed his heart to see. He’s not sure exactly when it started, but over the last month, he didn’t know a single emoticon could extract such an emotion from him.
Pensacola is a long drive from Miami, where he wishes he was right now. As much as he dislikes sleeping on Randy’s couch— his whole world is in Miami. His school, his internship, his friends, his brother, his girlfriend. But here he sits, getting himself together for a breakfast date with his mama. Normally, he wouldn’t oppose. He loves spending time with his mom. She’s his best friend. Everything he’s turned himself into has been by her hand. He’s stumbling out of the bathroom and quietly walking down the hall. Mako, the old gray tabby cat Matt brought home from a walk when he was ten, rubs against his legs as he starts the coffee pot. When he dumps a cup of food into Mako’s bowl, he takes a second to message Sunny back. The quickest I love you, he’s ever typed out. The first time he’s seen those words written. But it puts a smile on his lips when he hits send, watching Mako’s tail flit to the side as he eats.
Leia comes out of her room, wearing a dress Matt’s never seen. “Your brother and grandpa are going to meet us.” She says as she passes Matt, pouring them both a cup of coffee. Which makes Matt just nod.
He’s the youngest of Leia’s four boys. Kylo, his oldest brother— owns some big shot tattoo studio down in Orlando. Ben, he’s a prosecutor right there in Pensacola. Randy? The brother he’s closest to— his best friend. He’s smarter than Matt could even imagine, a programmer. Works at some software company in Miami. He lets Matt sleep on his couch during the week, while he attends his classes. The classes that point Matt to the best future he can imagine.
Leia marks something off the calendar and it only catches Matt’s eye for a moment. Something about calling Han. Who Matt knows fathered him and his brothers. He knows Leia gets a check from him for the smallest portion of his tuition every month. He’s never met Han, but his brothers have and his brothers have always said he’s not worth the trouble. Matt’s phone is lighting up, Sunny’s face plastering the screen. He’s eager to step away from his mother, cheeks tinged a little red when he ducks out into the hallway— “Hey Sunshine.” His voice is quiet, soft, still a bit sleepy.
And you sit quietly, leaning your elbows against your desk as you watch the wind blow the flag your window faces rapidly. “Matty.” Your voice matches his tone. Sweet and gentle and everything Matt needs. “I didn’t get to say goodnight, didn’t call me when you got in.”
“It was a long drive, bub. Just went to bed.” He says softly and bites his lip gently. He spills the thought brewing in his head for weeks. “How about you come with me next weekend? See where I actually live and formally meet my mom and everything.” He bites down on the tip of his thumb while the offer hangs in the air, but you’re quick to accept.
“yeah, okay.” Your smile is ear to ear. Happy to finally get asked back to see his family. You’ve met Leia, at one of Randy’s barbecues. But not as Matt’s girlfriend. Your hair twirls around your finger as you listen to him talk about his plans for the day. How he’s got breakfast with his mom and his brother. How he’ll video chat you tonight before he goes to bed, he swears this time. “Hey, Matty?” Your voice pitches, stopping the anger filled tangent about shark fin soup before he can start it. “I love you.” Your voice is soft as you say it, making Matt’s heart start to melt. Reminds him of last friday night in your dorm, your roommate gone for the weekend. Tucked under your duvet, your head against his chest in the dim light. Your hands intertwined as your bare skin burns hot each place they touch. It reminds him of the way you whispered I love you so quietly he wasn’t sure if you really said it at first.
His heart wants to burst in his chest but he bites his tongue as Leia turns the corner. “Matthew, we don’t have all day.” It’s a quick jab, but she smiles as she says it— walking over to slide on her shoes.
Matt sighs heavily, “Sunny, I have to go. But I'll call tonight. I promise.” He makes the declaration again before he hangs up. A smile on both of your faces. And Matt makes quick work of finishing his morning routine, washing his face and getting dressed as he drinks the coffee Leia had poured for him. He even brushes out his hair and debates on pulling it up before sending a quick snap to you, counting down the seconds to the following weekend.
Rushing out the door, settling himself into the passenger seat of Mama Solo’s car— he smiles. It’s a thirty minute drive to the restaurant closest to Ben’s firm. The one they always meet at for breakfast. “Ma?” Matt’s voice sounds hesitant, making Leia take the quickest glance at him.
“Yes?”
“I was just… I was doing some thinking.” He starts to fiddle with that little beaded bracelet he’s been wearing since your first date. “I think I’d like it if you met the girl I’ve been seeing… you know? Things are getting pretty serious and I…” he shrugs. “If you’d be okay with that.”
“Of course I’d be okay with that.” Leia says softly, smiling over at him. “If you’re happy that’s all that matters, Matthew… but…” Her smile falters for just a moment. “Those college girls, I wouldn’t… Are you sure this is serious?” She asks, not really meaning anything harmful by it. But the way Matt recoils, suggests he takes it that way.
“I’m very sure.” Matt is quick to offer up the statement, omitting the part about giving you his virginity, his first real kiss, his first relationship. You were his first everything and he’s so serious about you. Doesn’t want things to change and he’s desperate to make sure his mom knows that.
“Just worried about you and those girls in Miami is all.” Leia waves it off and Matt sighs heavily. Randy had warned him of this happening. “I’d love to meet her, Matthew, if she’s someone you’re serious about.”
“She is.” Matt just nods, eyes drifting towards the window. “Next weekend. I’m bringing her when I come home next weekend… Gonna stay in my room.” Matt explains and Leia can’t help but take her turn to nod, just as nervous as he was. Even more so when Matt admits his girl was Randy’s girlfriend’s best friend. “Randy’s how we met, Ma.”
You pack a bag for the weekend as Matt paces your dorm. He’s got his keys in his hand, nervous but excited. Happy to finally have you coming home with him. You pull your bag over your shoulder and smile at him reassuringly. “Listen, my mom is… she’s feeling weird about this.” Matt says softly, “I know I’ve said it before and I know you’ve met. But you met as Randy’s friend. You know? Not my girlfriend and she’s going to be so much worse.” Matt starts to ramble and you place a hand on his cheek.
“It’s going to be fine.” You whisper softly. “We’ve got almost a ten hour drive ahead of us, bub. You don’t need to stress yourself out before we’re even there.” You mention and he nods, agreeing with you. You hold his hand almost the entire ride. Switching seats every few hours, you listen to Matt tell you about his research lab on Black Tip Reef Sharks— how this week he’s gonna be able to get in the cage with them. You watch as the closer you get to Pensacola— how the nerves that have been keeping him up at night begin to creep back.
Matt and Leia had agreed to have this first meeting over dinner. Just the three of them. And Matt takes a deep breath when he parks the car, right next to the SUV that has Pensacola Catholic High School stickers plastered across the back. Matthew Solo: class of 2019– complete with scuba diver above, Randall Solo: class of 2016, paired with a trumpet, Benjamin: class of 2013, you now know he was a high school soccer player from the sticker, and Kylo Solo: class of 2009, with another soccer ball. You smile softly, Matt has always said she was proud of her kids and she is. But you’re watching Matt as he looks his mom’s car over, catching her eye in the driver’s seat. He waves quietly, watching as she gets out of her car. “Here we go,” He whispers as he exits, walking around the car to open your door all while Leia watches.
You feel your cheeks begin to heat up as Matt reaches for your hand to help you stand. He kisses your head and walks over to Leia, hugging her as tightly as he could. He introduces the two of you quietly, his own cheeks turning the brightest shade of pink as Leia pulls you into the tightest hug you could imagine. “It’s nice to finally meet you properly.” She makes a point to squeeze your arm which finally helps Matt to relax and allow himself to think this is going easier than he had hoped.

I want very badly to bake something sweet. I love baked goods so much, but I rarely bake because it takes a lot of planning to have the ingredients on hand, and then also I have to find time to do it. Usually it involves a stand mixer. I have a nice one (a Kitchenaid) but it lives in the basement and is heavy to bring upstairs and because I so rarely use it I have to wash the bowl and attachments first. My grandmother's stand mixer had a permanent place on her counter, and I will get there one day, but not in this house.
Anyway, I think of myself as someone who fails at baking more often than succeeds. That's another reason I don't bake often, because it's so disappointing to spend so much time and effort on something that doesn't turn out or is (even worse) mediocre.
But, in all fairness to me, there do seem to be times when I'm very, very good at making sweets, and usually that's when I come into a bounty of fresh local fruit and I have a crowd to bake for. The year we moved from Montgomery to Omaha (so five summers ago), we took my big kid to pick peaches and blueberries, and I made blueberry muffins, Edna Lewis's peach cobbler (best I have EVER tasted, and I've had a lot of peach cobbler), blueberry bars, and blueberry compote to eat with sliced pork loin. Two springs ago, I was in Pensacola for spring break, and we bought a flat of local strawberries. I made at least two strawberry icebox pies, strawberry muffins, and strawberry shortcake. I made a blueberry cobbler for my family when they were visiting last summer that everyone (including me! and I'm a tough critic of my own food) loved. I am desperate for a simple lemon loaf cake recipe that is easy to make, moist, and delicious. I would similarly love to once in my life make good lemon bars. If those bars also had another fruit like raspberry or blueberry I would die and go to (secular) heaven. Lately, I have been craving banana pudding, the icebox kind. Similarly, simple vanilla pound cake or iced chocolate sheet cake made by somebody's grandmother are also god-tier foods.
Other sweet things I love that I have no interest in making are fruit tarts, almond croissants, pastries of all kinds really, homemade-style cakes with real buttercream frosting (get outta here with grocery store cakes; yuck!), coffee cakes, and donuts. Sweet rolls that use yeast. Oh I would love, love, love some fresh orange rolls.
Eventually I'm going to have to learn how to use yeast without completely freaking out about it, or else I might never taste a delicious sticky sweet orange roll again.
All this ruminating is brought to you by a desperate craving I have for something sweet but no clue what to bake, plus little desire to put in the effort and time.
I don't use Tumblr collaboratively very much anymore, but if you've read this far and you have an easy (easy being key) and beloved dessert, I would love it if you left a link to the recipe in the comments.

Mayhem in May: Why Visiting Florida in May is Pure Sunshine Madness!
Welcome, sun-seekers, thrill-chasers, and sunscreen enthusiasts! If you're contemplating when to pack your bags and head to the Sunshine State, let me tell you, May is more than just another month on the calendar—it's a carnival of fun, a whirlwind of adventures, and yes, a touch of mayhem. Here's why you should mark May as your prime time to hit Florida:
1. The Weather Whimsy: May showers might bring flowers elsewhere, but in Florida, they bring the most epic sunsets you've ever seen! Picture this: You're sipping on a chilled beverage, toes buried in the warm sand a beach, and the sky erupts in a kaleidoscope of colors. May weather is like that friend who's a bit unpredictable but always ends up throwing the best parties.
2. Crowd Control (or Lack Thereof): Ever dreamt of having theme parks all to yourself? Okay, maybe not entirely to yourself, but May is as close as you'll get! With schools still in session and the summer vacation rush yet to hit its peak, you can actually navigate Disney World without feeling like a salmon swimming upstream. It's the perfect time to queue for Space Mountain without losing your mind!
3. Deals, Darling Deals: Money talks, especially in the land of perpetual sunshine. May is that sweet spot between spring break extravagance and summer surge pricing. Hotels are eager to fill rooms, airlines are feeling generous, and even the fanciest restaurants might have a table just for you. So, if you've ever wanted to live like a king on a budget, May in Florida is your chance to shine.
4. Wildlife Wonders: Forget what you've heard about gators lurking in every backyard (well, maybe not entirely forget, but let's not dwell). May is prime time for wildlife enthusiasts to witness Florida's natural wonders. From manatee-spotting adventures in Crystal River to turtle nesting tours on the Gulf Coast, Mother Nature puts on her finest Floridian showcase this time of year.
5. Festival Frenzy: Florida knows how to throw a party, and May is the kickoff to festival season! Whether you're into music, food, art, or all of the above, there's a festival with your name on it. From the eclectic vibes of the Florida Folk Festival to the seafood sensations of the Pensacola Beach Crawfish Festival, May is a buffet of cultural delights.
6. Margaritas and Mischief: Last but certainly not least, let's talk about the unofficial state beverage: the margarita. May is the perfect excuse to indulge in a frosty concoction (or two) because, well, why not? Pair that with some fresh seafood, a sunset cruise, and a healthy dose of Floridian charm, and you've got yourself a recipe for vacation bliss.
So, there you have it, fellow adventurers and sunshine enthusiasts! May in Florida is like a box of chocolates—except you know exactly what you're gonna get: pure, unadulterated fun. So pack your bags, slap on some sunscreen, and get ready to make memories that'll last a lifetime. Florida is waiting, and May is calling your name!

4 Easy Ways to Improve Your Immune System
While the mechanisms of immunity are complex and no one thing is going to suddenly make it work perfectly, there are lifestyle habits that create the balance the body needs for the immune system to function at its best. Let’s take a look at 4 things you can start implementing every day to drastically improve your overall health, including your immune function.
#1 Hydrate
While drinking water isn’t going to fight off germs, it is going to improve your body’s ability to do so. Without proper hydration, your body’s cells can’t do what they need to do to keep the body working as it should. Dehydration can have negative consequences on a variety of systems including digestion1, which is closely tied to immune function. A general rule of thumb is that you should be drinking half your bodyweight in ounces each day. That means that if you’re a 180 pound person, you should be taking in about 90 ounces of water a day. Pure water is better than juices and sodas, and don’t forget that soups and fresh fruits and vegetables provide quite a bit of water as well. If your urine is a clear, pale yellow, you’re most likely properly hydrated.
#2 Get Plenty of Sleep
There’s a reason you sleep a lot when you’re sick; your body needs rest in order to fight off that sickness. Even if you’re not actively experiencing symptoms of an illness, that doesn’t mean your body’s not fighting all kinds of battles under the surface. You’re regularly exposed to a plethora of pathogens and your body has an incredible ability to fend off most of them without you ever knowing it. But in order to do, your body has to be well rested. If you’re getting less than 6 hours of sleep per night, you’re more prone to illnesses like the common cold2.
#3 Eat More Whole Foods
Whole foods like fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes all contain a wide variety of important vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that ward off inflammation and help your immune system function at its best3. The fiber in these is also crucial for your gut microbiome, a major factor in your immune system, so eat up.
#4 Lower Your Stress
Numerous studies have shown that long-term stress created activity within the body that ravaged the immune system4. In fact, these studies indicate that duration of stress, not severity, is the key factor. That means making the effort to keep your stress levels as low as possible, so be sure you’re committing to regular self-care, taking breaks when needed, and allowing your body and mind to get away from it all.
While we’re all going to get sick now and then, keeping your immune system working at its best is going to make that an uncommon occurrence and help you to fight off anything you do catch much faster and easier. So, if you don’t already, start implementing these positive lifestyle changes and take better care of your body today.

Mold Removal in Fort Walton Beach and Navarre, FL in Vacation Homes: Best Practices for Absentee Owners
Vacation homes are a sanctuary for relaxation and enjoyment, offering a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. These properties, often left unoccupied for extended periods, can face unique challenges when it comes to mold growth. Absentee homeowners must be vigilant and proactive in implementing preventative measures and considering specialized strategies for mold removal in Fort Walton Beach and Navarre, FL, vacation homes.
1. Routine Inspections:
The absence of regular inhabitants can make it challenging to detect mold issues promptly. Implement a schedule for routine inspections, even during periods of vacancy. Hire a professional mold inspector to conduct thorough assessments and identify potential problem areas.
2. Controlled Humidity:
Mold thrives in damp conditions, making humidity control a critical aspect of prevention. Install dehumidifiers in key areas of the vacation home to maintain optimal humidity levels. Smart humidity control systems can be remotely monitored and adjusted, providing peace of mind for absentee homeowners.
3. Adequate Ventilation:
Ensure proper ventilation throughout the vacation home. Consider installing ventilation systems in areas prone to moisture buildup, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Adequate airflow helps prevent the stagnant conditions that contribute to mold growth.
4. Utilize Smart Technology:
Embrace smart home technology to monitor the vacation property remotely. Smart thermostats, humidity sensors, and leak detectors can provide real-time data and alerts, allowing absentee homeowners to address issues promptly and prevent mold before it becomes a significant problem.
5. Secure Enclosures:
Seal the vacation home effectively when not in use. Ensure all windows and doors are tightly closed and sealed to prevent water intrusion during storms or heavy rainfall. Well-sealed homes are less susceptible to the moisture that fuels mold growth.
6. Regular Cleaning Services:
Engage professional cleaning services regularly, even if the property is unoccupied. Thorough cleaning can prevent dust and debris buildup, minimizing potential food sources for mold. Professional cleaners are equipped to address hidden corners and often overlooked spaces.
7. Remove Organic Materials:
Mold feeds on organic materials like wood, paper, and fabric. Minimize the presence of such materials in the vacation home, especially in areas prone to moisture. Go for furnishings and decor that are less susceptible to mold growth.
8. Preseason Preparation:
Before closing up the vacation home for an extended period, take preemptive measures. Thoroughly clean and dry the property, inspecting it for any signs of mold. Use mold-resistant paint on walls and surfaces to create an added barrier against potential growth.
9. Consider Climate Control Systems:
Invest in climate control systems that maintain consistent temperatures. Fluctuations in temperature can contribute to condensation, providing an ideal environment for mold. A climate-controlled environment helps regulate moisture levels year-round.
10. Professional Mold Remediation Services:
In the unfortunate event that mold is detected, promptly enlist the services of professional mold remediation experts. Absentee homeowners may not be physically present to address the issue, making professional assistance essential for effective and thorough mold remediation in Pensacola and Crestview, FL.
In the realm of vacation homes, prevention is key when it comes to mold removal. Absentee owners must take proactive steps to create an environment that minimizes the risk of mold growth.

Seths Cut: Im thankful for you all cheers!
There are a few things that are certain in Pensacola that you will have to deal with at some point - tree removal and tree trimming. Before you hire a Tree Services Pensacola company you should take into consideration before hiring a tree service company. Some of the things you should consider include: - The type of tree that needs to be removed - The size of the tree - The location of the tree - The condition of the tree If you are unsure about whether or not you need to hire a tree removal company, contact Click for Tree Removal Services in Pensacola for a consultation. We will be able to assess your situation and give you our professional opinion. Seth Jones has been all around the world this year traveling for LM with one of his last stops being at the Irrigation Show, joined by LM colleague, Jake Goodman.  (Photo: LM Staff) I’m in a post-Thanksgiving lull watching the sun go down on a mild November day, reflecting on publishing this last issue of the year of Landscape Management. What a year it was! There is plenty to be thankful for. The people I met, the places I saw and the opportunities offered. Professionally, this year I made 19 business trips: 17 here in the States, one to Canada and unbelievably, one to Italy (I invite you to check out my complete recap of the Aces Wild peer group’s trip to Tuscany, Italy). We fired out 52 LMDirect! e-newsletters, many with industry exclusives. I hosted seminars at Equip Exposition; I ran like crazy at Elevate. I saw demonstrations of all sorts of new and exciting products for the industry. Personally, I took a few family vacations, most to south Texas to visit my ailing father-in-law. I took my daughter on her first college recruiting visit. I coached my son’s fifth- and sixth-grade soccer team and watched him lead the team in scoring. Sadly, I gave two eulogies, one for my father-in-law and the other for my wife’s grandma. But happily, I also gave what I’d like to think was a legendary toast at Thanksgiving. With the food rapidly cooling off (it took a few minutes for everyone to make their plate and get to the dining room), I kept it brief. “I’m so happy you’re all here, and I’m so thankful for our family. Cheers.” My wife’s aunt asked, “That’s it?” Her husband replied, “I heard ‘thankful’ and I heard ‘cheers.’ That’s all I need! Let’s eat!” As someone who is known in the family to be a writer and a speaker, I could see Aunt Lupe’s surprise. But sometimes, it’s best to be brief. Like that turkey and stuffing, there is a lot of great content in this issue I want you to hurry up and get to, including our State of the Industry Report and our Battery Powered Guide. I also want to thank the crew at The Greenery in South Carolina for posing for our cover photo. It was an idea we kicked around for eight months and finally pulled off as a nice cover showing the strength of our industry — the people in it. I hope you get a break during the month of December and can look back at all the incredible work your team accomplished in 2023. That’s what I’m going to do … once I get through these last three business trips (San Antonio for the Irrigation Show, Orlando for the LM Growth Summit and Cleveland for the North Coast Media holiday party.) It’ll be cold here, but I’ll watch another beautiful rural northeast Kansas sunset and I’ll again raise a glass and say, “I’m thankful for you all … cheers.” The post Seth’s Cut: I’m thankful for you all — cheers! first appeared on Landscape Management.
