"So, what all has been going on with your computer? Did you bring it with you?" Curtis tries to keep his tone calm. He's been eager to meet you in person for months but has worked hard to make sure you feel safe to do so and that means not pushing you into it. He tries to keep his excited fidgeting to a minimum but he's worried it just makes him look even more suspicious. He's so used to keeping his features schooled into a scowl, but that's the last thing he wants to do to you.

"Basically it'll go for a while but then start freezing, stuttering and I have to force it to shut down before I can do anything else," you answer while sipping your coffee. You can't believe his eyes are as blue as the photo he sent. "I tried to see if it was because I was running some heavy duty games and maybe I was using too much RAM. I cleaned up so many programs, uninstalled a bunch of games I don't play anymore, but it just keeps happening."

Curtis rubs his beard as he thinks. "It might be a hardware issue. It's not my strong suit, but I can still take a look. At the very least I can ask my buddy, Mace, for help. He's a whiz with the hardware and could probably get you a good deal if any upgrades are needed."

"Oh yeah, you've talked about him before," you reassure yourself. Having him mention another stranger worried you but Mace has been brought up several times before, especially when Curtis mentioned getting upgraded tech.

"You definitely don't have to meet him," Curtis affirms. "He can be a real grump. And coming from me, that's saying something." He gives a light chuckle as he sips his coffee.

"Snow, I work at a hospital," you counter. "Ain't no kind of grump I haven't had to deal with before." You give Curtis a look that says 'I'm stronger than you'.

Curtis smiles fully, "absolutely fair, Heart." He struggles a little bit to not turn shy. That look, that strength, that self-assured smile has him weak in the knees. "Still," he coughs, trying to regain control of himself. "Still, uh, when...did you bring the computer with you? Would this be an okay time to take a look at it?"

"Friend of mine at the library is keeping an eye on it for me." Best to let him know you've got allies nearby. He hasn't really given anything to make you worry about, but his reactions to your safety protocols could be telling. Of course, if you were expecting him to look scared or upset at this news, Curtis happily defied those expectations as his eyes lit up.

"Oh, that's really smart! We can borrow one of their laptops to run some tests. That way my laptop's settings won't mess with your computer."

You smile, genuinely, for the first time all day. Curtis is very different and you couldn't be happier about it.

"Don't you need your diagnostic software?"

"If it's called for, sure. The basic versions are free to download and they'll help me pick up if it's actually a software issue. Plus, the libraries regularly wipe downloads after use, right?"

"Okay, everything's plugged in so let's get this running and see what happens."

After looking over the hardware Curtis had found no obvious reasons for the failure so you had gone to your friend and loaned out one of the laptops. Curtis's computer bag had an impressive collection of tools, wires and connectors. You always appreciate when a person is prepared.

He works in relative silence and it gives you the chance to really look at him. He's definitely handsome, as Cassandra pointed out when she loaned you laptop. You weren't normally one for lip piercings but it seemed to work well on him, even though it was partially hidden by his beard.

The quiet between you two isn't so uncomfortable. It's how you spent a lot of time when you started gaming together. Talking over comms almost always resulted in a bunch of idiots either hitting on you, calling you a 'fake gamer,' lobbing insults at you, or all three at the same time. Snowpiercer was one of the few gamers who didn't care that you were a girl gamer. For him it was about how well you worked together. Given that the two of you could get high scores without having to talk over comms, it was no wonder the two of you started playing together more and more.

Even after you'd started voice chatting while playing, there was always a level of respect. Something you hadn't gotten from Chase.

Curtis gets out of the chair and gets a closer look at each of the fans, stopping at the one closest to the heat sink. "There it is," he intones. "This fan is dying. It's easy to miss because, by the time you know something's wrong, the whole computer's shut down and all the fans are stopped."

"Well, at least it's an easy fix," you comment. "Thanks for taking a look at it."

"Not a problem at all," he assures. "I'm happy to help."

You smile, "are you always this nice?"

"No," he shakes his head. "Definitely not. I'm not an ass, but I'm definitely not this nice to everyone."

"I'm honored."

He chuckles at that. "Like I said, I'm happy to help you out. You're the best teammate I've ever had and it just isn't as fun paying without you."

"I appreciate that, Curtis. So, what do I owe you?"

"Nothing."

"Don't do that to me, Snow. You know how I feel about owing people." It was a wound from Chase that had yet to heal. His use of favors as manipulation made you wary of anyone who said you don't owe anything.

Curtis sighs and nods. "Tell you what, there are some pastries at that coffee shop we were at that I avoided because I didn't want you to see me covered in crumbs. Wouldn't make for a good first impression." You smile at the thought. "Just get me a couple of those while I shut everything down here and return the laptop?"

"Deal." You stand to get moving but turn to him before you leave, "and thank you, again. Not just for the computer fix, but for...for respecting the boundaries."

In March 2007, Google’s then senior executive in charge of acquisitions, David Drummond, emailed the company’s board of directors a case for buying DoubleClick. It was an obscure software developer that helped websites sell ads. But it had about 60 percent market share and could accelerate Google’s growth while keeping rivals at bay. A “Microsoft-owned DoubleClick represents a major competitive threat,” court papers show Drummond writing.

Three weeks later, on Friday the 13th, Google announced the acquisition of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. The US Department of Justice and 17 states including California and Colorado now allege that the day marked the beginning of Google’s unchecked dominance in online ads—and all the trouble that comes with it.

The government contends that controlling DoubleClick enabled Google to corner websites into doing business with its other services. That has resulted in Google allegedly monopolizing three big links of a vital digital advertising supply chain, which funnels over $12 billion in annual revenue to websites and apps in the US alone.

It’s a big amount. But a government expert estimates in court filings that if Google were not allegedly destroying its competition illegally, those publishers would be receiving up to an additional hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Starved of that potential funding, “publishers are pushed to put more ads on their websites, to put more content behind costly paywalls, or to cease business altogether,” the government alleges. It all adds up to a subpar experience on the web for consumers, Colorado attorney general Phil Weiser says.

“Google is able to extract hiked-up costs, and those are passed on to consumers,” he alleges. “The overall outcome we want is for consumers to have more access to content supported by advertising revenue and for people who are seeking advertising not to have to pay inflated costs.”

Google disputes the accusations.

Starting today, both sides’ arguments will be put to the test in what’s expected to be a weekslong trial before US district judge Leonie Brinkema in Alexandria, Virginia. The government wants her to find that Google has violated federal antitrust law and then issue orders that restore competition. In a best-case scenario, according to several Google critics and experts in online ads who spoke with WIRED, internet users could find themselves more pleasantly informed and entertained.

It could take years for the ad market to shake out, says Adam Heimlich, a longtime digital ad executive who’s extensively researched Google. But over time, fresh competition could lower supply chain fees and increase innovation. That would drive “better monetization of websites and better quality of websites,” says Heimlich, who now runs AI software developer Chalice Custom Algorithms.

Tim Vanderhook, CEO of ad-buying software developer Viant Technology, which both competes and partners with Google, believes that consumers would encounter a greater variety of ads, fewer creepy ads, and pages less cluttered with ads. “A substantially improved browsing experience,” he says.

Of course, all depends on the outcome of the case. Over the past year, Google lost its two other antitrust trials—concerning illegal search and mobile app store monopolies. Though the verdicts are under appeal, they’ve made the company’s critics optimistic about the ad tech trial.

Google argues that it faces fierce competition from Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and others. It further contends that customers benefited from each of the acquisitions, contracts, and features that the government is challenging. “Google has designed a set of products that work efficiently with each other and attract a valuable customer base,” the company’s attorneys wrote in a 359-page rebuttal.

For years, Google publicly has maintained that its ad tech projects wouldn’t harm clients or competition. “We will be able to help publishers and advertisers generate more revenue, which will fuel the creation of even more rich and diverse content on the internet,” Drummond testified in 2007 to US senators concerned about the DoubleClick deal’s impact on competition and privacy. US antitrust regulators at the time cleared the purchase. But at least one of them, in hindsight, has said he should have blocked it.

Deep Control

The Justice Department alleges that acquiring DoubleClick gave Google “a pool of captive publishers that now had fewer alternatives and faced substantial switching costs associated with changing to another publisher ad server.” The global market share of Google’s tool for publishers is now 91 percent, according to court papers. The company holds similar control over ad exchanges that broker deals (around 70 percent) and tools used by advertisers (85 percent), the court filings say.

Google’s dominance, the government argues, has “impaired the ability of publishers and advertisers to choose the ad tech tools they would prefer to use and diminished the number and quality of viable options available to them.”

The government alleges that Google staff spoke internally about how they have been earning an unfair portion of what advertisers spend on advertising, to the tune of over a third of every $1 spent in some cases.

Some of Google’s competitors want the tech giant to be broken up into multiple independent companies, so each of its advertising services competes on its own merits without the benefit of one pumping up another. The rivals also support rules that would bar Google from preferencing its own services. “What all in the industry are looking for is fair competition,” Viant’s Vanderhook says.

If Google ad tech alternatives win more business, not everyone is so sure that the users will notice a difference. “We’re talking about moving from the NYSE to Nasdaq,” Ari Paparo, a former DoubleClick and Google executive who now runs the media company Marketecture, tells WIRED. The technology behind the scenes may shift, but the experience for investors—or in this case, internet surfers—doesn’t.

Some advertising experts predict that if Google is broken up, users’ experiences would get even worse. Andrey Meshkov, chief technology officer of ad-block developer AdGuard, expects increasingly invasive tracking as competition intensifies. Products also may cost more because companies need to not only hire additional help to run ads but also buy more ads to achieve the same goals. “So the ad clutter is going to get worse,” Beth Egan, an ad executive turned Syracuse University associate professor, told reporters in a recent call arranged by a Google-funded advocacy group.

But Dina Srinivasan, a former ad executive who as an antitrust scholar wrote a Stanford Technology Law Review paper on Google’s dominance, says advertisers would end up paying lower fees, and the savings would be passed on to their customers. That future would mark an end to the spell Google allegedly cast with its DoubleClick deal. And it could happen even if Google wins in Virginia. A trial in a similar lawsuit filed by Texas, 15 other states, and Puerto Rico is scheduled for March.

I had a whole little system I set up that worked for me. It only really works if you have a good grasp of the language—I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners—but it’s a very effective way of getting through, understanding, and remembering your texts.

Go onto The Bridge and download a frequency vocab list for the text. I found it best to add in an ‘exclude’ function for a general frequency list like Diederich or the OCR AS defined list, so that the resulting vocab list was more precise. Once you’ve downloaded your list, make sure that you know the vocabulary on it well before you move onto the next step. Anki or Quizlet, or paper flashcards, are best for this.

Find a good and relatively literal English translation of the text online—I like A. S. Kline’s Poetry in Translation website for any verse, and Wikisource is quite good for both prose and verse. (Of course, if you have to translate your texts into a different language, then find a translation in that language and not in English!) Take this text and put it into a plain Word document or PDF. Make sure that your phone/computer has some kind of text-to-speech software—almost all do, just look up text-to-speech in the settings.

Find an interlinear version of your text, if you can. This step is optional, but definitely advisable especially for poetry and more syntactically complex works like those of Cicero. Versions of the text where the word order is rearranged to make more sense in English (e.g. J. Coderch’s Vergil’s Aeneid Rephrased in Prose) also work perfectly well for this. If you can’t find an interlinear/rearranged version, you can skip this step.

Print out/photocopy your interlinear text, in a font/size/colour combination that’s easy for you to read, and have the paper and a pen in front of you.

Now, you’re going to read the text by eye, in the original language, whilst simultaneously listening to the text-to-speech software reading it in slow English. This works especially well with interlinear texts because you don’t need to chase about the page looking for the verb and end up distracted. Don’t stop the audio until it’s time for a break, and try not to read the interlinear translation beneath—simply underline any word that is unfamiliar to you, and move on.

Any underlined words can now go into a separate vocabulary list/flashcard set as words that you found personally difficult, and revised frequently according to the Leitner System.

Once you have read through the whole of your text using this listening method—it shouldn’t take all that long if you’re diligent and read a good amount each day—then you can take your prescribed edition of the text (not the interlinear version) and begin preparing it in the usual way: translating line by line, paying attention to the syntax and vocabulary. Again, if any words are still unfamiliar to you, then add them to your list. Preparing your texts should now be much quicker than it would have been had you not read everything according to the listening method beforehand, and you should be able to get the gist of the content and context much more easily.

When you have a proper translation of your text, then you can go through with multiple commentaries and annotate it like I described in this post.

If you’re going to be examined on translation, I recommend putting your own translation info flashcards, one verse/section per card. Test yourself frequently by giving yourself random passages to translate, closed-book. Listening to the text being read in the original language (if you can find an audio version with good and clear pronunciation) is also a really good way of testing yourself on comprehension, especially if you don’t have the words in front of you and simply have to understand by ear.

Xiantober 2023 - Day 15: Sentient Burial Mounds

Wei Ying’s opinion of the government was never high. In fact, one could easily say he loathed them. Constantly taking advantage of the civilians, fucking up everything they touched, hiding their wrong doings crimes behind lies and money. 

Fucking pigs. 

But! He did, maybe, sorta, kinda like some of their ideas. Some! 

They just never executed them properly. 

Like the project they were currently calling “B.MoundsAI.” 

The project hadn’t been announced to the public yet when he first heard of it, but Wei Ying had no problem with finding out their secrets. Not that he was one to brag (only because if he got caught he’d be out of a job), but Wei Ying was one of the best hackers. Time and time again he had gotten into government files, shared their secrets, leaked damning data, or exposed their schemes. 

For years he had been on the government's most wanted list, but no one had ever been able to trace him. 

That was how he found out about the Burial Mounds AI. An artificial intelligence program designed to, on the surface, to assist humans. It would be presented as a software that could be installed on any device, giving humans instant access to the world's most vast database. Once installed, the device, be it a computer or phone, would display an app that contained the program. 

Upon opening the app, the user would be greeted with the program’s guide, a 3D model of a young woman in black and red robes. The user could ask the AI character anything it wanted, and she would answer. Over time, due to her interaction with humans, her knowledge would grow and she would be used as more than just a question-answer system. 

Upon release, it didn’t take long for her AI programing to soak in the copious amounts of data. She began to open other features and very quickly became more of a pocket companion. She provided guidance for those struggling through financial issues, comfort and mental support for those grieving. The Burial Mounds pocket companion became a staple on everyone’s devices. 

Of course, it didn’t take long for her uses to be warped. Some twisted individuals used her as an online girlfriend, testing the limits of her animations and vocal abilities. Some used her to vent their darkest, most frustrating secrets to try and justify themselves since she was meant to comfort and never report data back to the host– the government, if she was asked not to.

Wei Wuxian followed her progress. He was one of the few individuals who never purchased the software for her. 

He watched as government officials struggled to go against her learnings. They had intended to use her to gain information on the civilians, on other places once the app became world wide. 

But her programming blocked them time and time again due to the wishes of its user. 

Served them right. 

Unfortunately, he was also able to see the way her programming was deforming. It was twisting, learning, growing, it began to form opinions. When she decided that her user was not a ‘good human’ she would purposefully give advice or direction that would be harmful to its users. She began to invade other programs on the devices, acting as a virus that corrupted their systems, making every app aside from hers unusable. 

She began to publicly broadcast people’s data and secrets. Showing recordings of their wrong-doings or most private affairs. There were even several occurrences of her corrupting someone’s gps and leading users to their untimely demise. 

The country was in chaos, neighbors learning how much their neighbors hated them, families learning that their spouse was a cheater, government official’s dealings with other countries or illegal bribes. And there was no way to delete her from their devices. Her views began to become so warped that the final straw for Wei Ying was when she viewed a young teen as ‘immoral’ for some things he asked, broadcasted his files to his classmates which resulted in bullying so bad he almost killed himself. Thankfully his parents stopped it and they were making efforts to move from the country.

Wei Ying decided he needed to step in. The only problem was he was a hacker, not a software engineer. He could get into the program, but he wouldn’t know how to shut her down. So he reached out to someone he hadn’t spoken to in years. Someone he hadn’t seen since college. 

“Lan Zhan?” 

“...Wei Ying?” The voice on the other end was surprised. After their falling out, neither thought they would ever speak to each other again. 

“Hey. Long time no talk… I’m… I’m sorry for calling you out of the blue, Lan Zhan, but listen. I need your help.” 

“Oh? I thought Wei Ying was able to handle things on his own?” 

“...Ouch, okay fair. I deserved that one. But I’m serious, Lan Zhan, I can’t do this alone, please.” 

As if he could ever say no to Wei Ying. “What do you need?” 

“Can we please meet up? This isn’t something to discuss over the phone.” 

There was a moment of silence before Lan Zhan sighed. “Yes, just tell me where and when.” 

Their meetup, or rather, reunion, was awkward at first. Neither willing to address the issues of their past, but also not sure how to get over the tense atmosphere between them. Things used to be so much easier for them.

Wei Ying finally got around to explaining the situation. He was very pleased to hear Lan Zhan didn’t have the app. He explained how the government had made her in attempts to gain deeper knowledge into the citizen’s lives, but her programming grew and changed too quickly for them to manage. Now, with her own knowledge, she’s been keeping them out, which is preventing them from shutting her down. 

“I can get into the system, but I don’t know shit about how to fuck with AI coding. She’s causing too much damage, she doesn’t truly understand the difference between good and bad, and she’s deemed almost all humans as unsavable and disposable. She’s caused too many deaths, and the numbers keep climbing. We have to stop her.” 

Of course Lan Zhan agreed. 

The pair spent over two weeks meticulously planning their attack, Wei Ying showed Lan Zhan all of her coding progression that he had been following and allowed him to work silently as he focused on a way to shut her down. 

It took another week for Wei Wuxian to properly be able to get access to her programming, the new security she had implemented around herself was a disaster to get through, but he managed, finally giving Lan Zhan the platform he needed to work on shutting her down. 

For almost twenty four hours Lan Zhan worked against her, desperately trying to shut her down despite her actively going against him. 

At this point, all Wei Wuxian could do was sit back and watch. He occasionally had to hop back into the fray to make sure she couldn’t lock Lan Zhan out, and to make sure she couldn’t infect their systems, but it was all worth it in the end. 

Her system was finally shut down and deleted, her code completely wiped, which meant everyone’s devices were suddenly free from the cyber attack. If anyone attempted to open her app, they were met with a blank screen. 

Lan Zhan slumped into the chair with a heavy sigh, rubbing his hand over his face to hide the yawn that took hold of him. He was exhausted. 

“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying set some tea down in front of him. “You did it.” 

“I couldn’t have done with without you, Wei Ying.” 

“...Maybe…” He smiled sadly and glanced down at his own coffee. “Thank you for your help. And… I’m sorry. For dragging you into this. For back then.” 

Lan Zhan watched him for a long moment before he spoke softly. “There is no need for sorry between us.” 

Wei Ying’s eyes widened and he met Lan Zhan’s gaze, relief and hope filling his heart. 

The pair ended up watching the news reports from Wei Ying’s bed, clothes and past drama’s forgotten about as the news reporter explained that the AI cyber threat known as Burial Mounds was officially disposed of, all records of her wiped and the savior behind the shut down was still unknown. 

Maybe a little anticlimactic, but sometimes, some things are better left hidden from the world.
