Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well!
People weren't meant to live for ever. Living life was like going to bed after a long day of hard work. It was inevitable that the longing and desire to close one's eyes would eventually arise. When you got to a certain age, this longing could start to nag at you. It was... It was like it knew. It was like it could feel. It felt how the sun of someone's life had been set. How evening had fallen. It was only unfortunate that the owner of this said life not always had a clue.

Boyd was asked several questions and shared plenty of stories regarding his role as Pippin, from his audition process and being the first one cast in the series, to the hobbits’ Guinness Book of World Records listing for their amount of time they had to have getting their hobbit feet applied, as well as which costume prop he still owns. Always be prepared, as you never known when inspiration will strike.Īlways map out your plans. Instead, I’m working here without a net, fueled by memory and tepid Irish breakfast tea. If I had remembered even a small pencil, I could have treated readers to some very fun comments. As a result, I have to resort to “paraphrasing” everything I heard during the talk. This was an important lesson reinforced for me as a writer, as I didn’t even think to bring my notepad and pencil with me into the theater. He also talked about how inspiration for his own music comes from all over the place. Of course, Boyd had his guitar nearby, so that when the spirit moved him he could play a favorite song. It’s always good idea to keep the tools of your trade at hand. “Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim’rous beastie,” Boyd read. This also gave him a chance to enthusiastically introduce folks in the Southwest United States to some of his favorite Scottish words. Boyd pulled a copy of the poems of Scottish poet Robert Burns from his pocket to illustrate this point, by using the poem “To a Mouse” to answer an audience question. When you want to explain something as eloquently as possible, it never hurts to have some literary reference. Boyd said some of the creative people he knows - artists, musicians, poets, photographers - make beautiful things and “keep them hidden.” That’s a shame, as something we make today may make someone else happy tomorrow.Ĭarry books with you wherever you go. However you share it, get your work, ideas, and talents out there. He talked bout how interesting it is when a person creates something, it can find its way through the universe and be discovered.īoyd did say social media can be both a good and bad thing, as it gives creative types more ways to share their work, but also makes it harder to stand out in that huge sea of images out there. As a frontman for the band Beecake, he talked about the random circumstances where one of his band’s songs, “Please Stay,” made into an episode of a television series. Boyd is one exceptionally entertaining individual, both on screen and musically, and he was a vocal advocate of not being selfish with the things you create. Here are a few things I picked up from the man who made us all love Peregrin “Pippin” Took.ĭon’t hide your talents. I had no idea, however, how much we would learn from his casual, positive personality about the importance of the creative spirit. He is also a patron of the Scottish Youth Theatre, and the National Boys’ Choir of Scotland.Īs an unapologetic follower of all things Tolkien and an admirer of Boyd’s music, I attended the event with my teenage daughter fully expecting to be entertained. The Scottish-born actor is best known for his performance as Pippin in the Lord of The Rings trilogy, as well as for his moving performance of the ending song, “The Last Goodbye,” for The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies.

The event was of the many free presentations offered at the Las Cruces International Film Festival. I recently had the privilege of attending an event in which actor, musician, and hobbit Billy Boyd spent an afternoon answering questions from young musicians, filmmakers, and Lord of the Rings fans.

Let's hear you rant about Pippin Took! (Hope you haven't talked about LotR too much already)
HI, Fenja, thanks for dropping by! I dont’ think I can ever talk too much about LOTR 😂
So the interesting thing about Pippin is I didn’t really like him that much at first. Much like Gandalf, I thought he was careless and made silly mistakes and I preferred Merry because he was the smart one. But on this last rewatch I had a lot of empathy for Pippin and I fell in love with him. Rant is under the cut
Send me something to rant about!!
His character arc is so relatable to me because I’m afraid of everything and it was really inspiring to see how he slowly found his courage, like Galadriel said. It also gets me especially how those moments he began showing more courage was when his friends were in danger. When Borormir defended him and Merry, Pippin threw himself to the orcs in retaliation to them attacking Boromir. When he didn’t think twice to attack someone it was because they were about to hit Gandalf and he didn’t think twice. Pippin just loves his friends so much!
I also love how soft and gentle he is. That moment when he sings that amazing song (Billy Boyd’s voice is so beautiful) to Denethor in Gondor? Ugh, it gets me everytime! Especially when he starts sobbing after, thinking of how awful the war is and how much he misses his home.
To be honest, I think Pippin is just so kind and optimistic that he wasn’t fully aware of what was going on at first. When the Fellowship first comes together, he joins them assuring he’ll go with Frodo, but he just thinks it’s an adventure (”we’re also going on this quest... mission... thing”) and it isn’t until Merry tells him a big line in the forest of the ents (”if we don’t do something there won’t be a Shire to come back to”) that he realized everything that was at stake.
Lastly, there are certain moments of him that resonate a lot with me. When the Ringwraiths hurt Frodo, Pippin is already crying and asks Aragorn if Frodo will die. When they see Mordor in the distance, you see him sobbing and saddly mouthing ‘Frodo’ because he can’t conceive the idea that his dear friend might be dead. Also, especially, the moment after the mines of Moria. Even if Merry is sobbing too, he has to comfort Pippin when he bawls his eyes out because it was Pippin’s mistake that brought attention on themselves and he surely blamed himself for what happened to Gandalf. Ugh, just so many layers to this character!!
Just... Peregrin Took has so much heart and cares so much, even if he was naive enough not to see the true evil that was happening around him and had to find his courage in order to find his friend. But that only makes him more flawed, human and relatable 💜
Send me something to rant about!!

LOTR D&D Classes!
I’m still kind of a newbie at D&D, BUT character creation is like my favorite thing so I thought this would be fun to take a shot at! (under a cut cause it got kinda long lolol) I used D&D Beyond for all of my research so any quotations are from there!
Frodo
Race: Halfling
Class: Cleric
I've seen Frodo as a lot of different things, but for me cleric makes the most sense. "Clerics are intermediaries between the mortal world and the distant planes of the gods" - thanks to the ring, Frodo has a connection with the mortal world and also with the shadow realm. Also, even though he doesn't serve a deity specifically, he still embodies the basic idea of a champion who wields divine magic (the ring) in service of a higher power (saving the world).
Sam
Race: Halfling
Class: Bard/barbarian
Sam is a tough one. His personality is so versatile that he could literally be like 4 different classes. I genuinely couldn't decide between bard or barbarian, so like a mix of both? In terms of a bard, Sam is a consistent inspiration to the entire Fellowship, mainly Frodo. Casting bardic inspiration is totally something that he could do. Also the fact that bards "weave magic through words and music to inspire allies, demoralize foes" etc. Sam is constantly seeming to do just that.
On the other hand, I would argue that Sam shows some barbarian characteristics, too. When fighting Shelob, he totally draws from "a roiling reservoir of anger at a world full of pain", so...there's that. Also for barbarians, their rage fuels their ability in battle but also helps them combat feats of strength, which I would say Sam definitely does.
Merry
Race: Halfling
Class: Fighter
I would say Merry is a bit of a bard, but over time I think he could develop to be a fighter. He definitely has the personality and potential of one, he just never really gets to develop it /that/ much. Fighters "learn the basics of all combat styles" and are "adept with shields and every form of armor". We see a bit of this with Merry when he lowkey joins the Rohirrim. Since fighters specialize in a certain form of combat, Merry's would probably be swordsmanship but I could also see two weapon fighting with daggers? A touch of bard too, though, since he's a bit of a inspirer and clearly loves to sing hahaha
Pippin
Race: Halfling
Class: Bard
Pippin was by far the easiest of them all haha. 100% Pippin is a bard. Throughout the movies at least, we see that he isn't all /that/ interested in fighting. Like bards, he kind of sticks to the sidelines in combat. We don't really get to see him do many good things, because he spends most of his time making messy wessies lol. But if he was going to fight his technique would for sure lean towards more crafty ways instead of just straight attack. Also, you know, that whole scene with him singing beautifully...totally did not influence my decision I swear. Great song tho do y'all think Billy Boyd does weddings?
Aragorn
Race: Human
Class: Ranger -> Paladin
Almost every post like this that I looked at had Aragorn pegged as a ranger for obvious reasons. None more important than the fact that he's literally referred to as a ranger in the films!! Yes, I'd agree he starts out as a ranger. BUT, I would say that very quickly he turns into more of a paladin. Paladins are "holy warriors bound to a sacred oath". Again, not really holy in the literal sense, but if you don't think he's bound to a sacred oath, I feel like you missed an important plot line in the movie. His Dúnedain heritage fulfills that sacred oath category. He has a responsibility to stand against the forces of evil and take his rightful place as basically the king of Middle Earth.
Boromir
Race: Human
Class: Fighter
I feel like there's probably not a lot to say here lmao. A fighter is a master of combat, skilled in a variety of weapons and armor. Yeah, that's pretty much Boromir summed up. You could probably describe him as a questing knight? Or a royal champion? Either or really, depending on how you look at it. He definitely has an "unparalleled mastery with weapons and armor, and a thorough knowledge of the skills of combat". And I almost lost it when I read that fighters are "well acquainted with death...staring it defiantly in the face" 🥺. R I P
Legolas
Race: High-elf
Class: Mostly fighter with like a dash of ranger and a pinch of druid
Legolas gave me the hardest time. First of all with his race I struggled between high-elf or wood elf. Technically, wood elf seems more matching BUT he's just too badass for that so I went with high-elf.
In terms of class, it was really hard because nothing seems to match him perfectly. Rogue, ranger, fighter, and even possibly a druid variant would all be valid classes for him. In the end, I feel like a combination of druid, ranger, and fighter is the best option. In terms of fighter, Legolas is for sure a master of martial combat. He uses multiple weapons (bow, daggers, sword) and is exceptional with all of them. In terms of ranger, I think he is partly a ranger because of his time spent with Aragorn, and that vibe just seems to fit him a bit better than a fighter. In terms of the druid stuff, I honestly just feel like his connection with nature and wisdom are more aligned with that class. Casting guidance is honestly a very Legolas-like spell that I feel like he uses in more ways than one during the journey.
Gimli
Race: Dwarf
Class: Barbarian
I also feel like this one is pretty self-explanatory. "Barbarians come alive in the chaos of combat"....yep that's Gimli. I would absolutely kill to see Gimli rage omg. He may have and I just can't remember at the moment, but could you imagine! Barbarians are also very frequently paired with dwarves because of their high constitution and strength. "Their courage in the face of danger makes barbarians perfectly suited for adventuring" - normally true, although Gimli seems to be afraid a few times during the films?? Also, Gimli x Legolas shippers don't even worry hens - barbarians "miss the close-knit family structures of their tribe, but eventually find them replaced by the bonds formed among the members of their adventuring parties" UWU.
Gandalf
Race: Aasimar** (see my notes on this one)
Class: Wizard, obviously
Well...he literally is a wizard so there's that. "Wizards are supreme magic-users, defined and united as a class by the spells they cast." Gandalf would be a supreme magic-user, although in reality he doesn't use spells that often? At least not as often as I feel like wizards normally do in D&D?
**In terms of race it's a little hard because Maia aren't really existent in D&D. From what I've seen most people play him as a human, but I just feel like that's a little off? I did some research, and going way off of normal D&D classes, I found the Aasimar race. They are "planetouched, native outsiders that had in their blood some good, otherworldly characteristics. They were often, but not always, descended from celestials and other creatures of pure good alignment." This seems to sum up Gandalf pretty well in my opinion. (Info found here!)
Tumblr media
If y'all have any thoughts i would be super interested to hear them! Please add on (but also pls be nice :)) Honestly the characters are all so dynamic that it was hard to sort them because each one of them could fit into like 3 or 4 different classes hahaha

2020 Fic Highlights
Thank you for tagging me, @gellalaer - I’m glad you are feeling back in the swing of things, and taking everything on your own terms. [socially distant elbow bump]
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your favourite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works!
2020 wasn’t a great year. I spent the first part of quarantine curled up in a ball, then finally felt better, and then got swept under by deaths in the family. It’s been hard to get my muse back, but I’m gradually working up the amount of writing I do. My mind at the end of fall was fizzy like a shaken bottle of soda pop, ready to explode with ideas. I hope that can translate into a more productive 2021!
1) The first story I finished in 2020 was One Week, a Thryce (Star Wars) story. It is unapologetic songfic of the Bare Naked Ladies song. It took a lot of plotting and a lot of watching of tango videos. This is the story that I put the most effort into (I started it in 2019 and worked on it off and on) and I’m really proud of the work I put into it.
2) I get warm fuzzies from thinking about Chevalier. It is a post-war LoTR fluff about Pippin and Diamond and I had a lot of fun imagining Billy Boyd’s facial expressions and mannerisms as I wrote it.
3) If you had told me on January 1st, 2020, that the band I had ignored on NYRE while I had a hissy because nobody else in the family wanted to have a Star Wars OT marathon would a) become one of the all-consuming fandoms in my life, and b) I’d be writing RPF, I would have asked what color the sky is in the alternate universe you stepped out of. But here I am, a total ARMY writing the tiniest of canoes, BTS genfic fluff. I really enjoy writing the Mischief Managed couple.
4) Not Fluff In the Slightest: Relicts. This was both challenging and part of a challenge. Inspired by the old Diet Coke Break commercial, I imagined some lonely Nightsisters thirsting over Luke Skywalker on his post-RoTJ search for Force artifacts. Writing smut is incredibly difficult for me, and Luke Skywalker isn’t my type. However, I spun my own brand of crack throughout it and worked out the story, little by little. It was a very good exercise and I’m quite satisfied with it.
5) My last story of the year was A Present for Master Billaba, another Star Wars story, a fluffy everybodylives!AU about Caleb and Depa being the mentor/student that they deserved to be. My happiness about it comes from how Indy seemed so happy to get it as a gift, and that makes me happy that I got the prompt right.
I think almost everyone in my circle has done these already, so I’m not going to tag anyone. I guess I’ll have to be more proactive about my year in review at the end of 2021!
