#Black barn owl

During the "Superb Owl" weekend I forgot to post my favorite type of owl.
This is the very rare black barn owl. Barn owls are usually mostly white and light brown. Black barn owls are exceptionally rare. They are the result of a genetic mutation and are often rejected by their mothers.
They can usually only be found raised in captivity.
I think black barn owls very beautiful little birds. They look like the sky at dusk.

I'll leave my love between the stars
Tumblr media
I started the year 2021 watching Labyrinth (1986, dir. Jim Henson) and reading its fancomic Girls Next Door (written by Pica-la-Cynique) on deviantArt...
...and I nearly lost my eyes from overuse😆 So of course I had to make a quality fanart. Zoomorphic fanart, what else?

Sarah as the Goblin Queen must be able to change into an owl as well as the Goblin King obviously. Black barn owl specifically because she is a brunette.

So for anyone who was interested in actually reading the server update to the discord I'm in, I took these screenshots as soon as I saw them. Keep in mind that it's been a few weeks now but this is still what it says in the server.

Debated even sharing this but honestly fuck it, why not? Someone else will maybe do the same later on anyways.
This decision still does not seem fair to me at all, the only "fairness" I can see this benefitting is to make it so no one has to hear about it and it goes less talked about and even fewer people are actually educated on the topic.
But those are my individual thoughts, if anyone else has any other thoughts on this feel free to share. /gen /pos

Okay, this is…way outside of my usual.
First of all, animal tax for taking your time (more photos further down I can’t format worth anything lol)
Tumblr media
I volunteer with a local wildlife rehabilitation center. The only state, federal, and USDA licensed one in the upper 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle, although we have cared for animals from all over the state. We’ve had everything from half-tamed bengal cats come in from a hoarder’s house to a million and one orphaned starlings in our doors.
There’s always a lot of animals, no matter what, because unfortunately the education towards wildlife in this area is exceedingly poor and most people are either afraid of most animals or see them as nothing more than pests. We’ve had a fair number of animals shot, poisoned, trapped, the parents killed and then the land/homeowner finds the nest of babies…the list goes on.
To combat this, we have always pushed education. We have programs all across the area, we go to schools and churches and scout groups. We’re currently working on building an education building, both to give our educational ambassadors larger and nicer habitats to live in and to have a place to hold events for the community. As the founder of the center always says, “You can’t love what you don’t know”.
This building is by no means cheap. We’re getting close to having it fully funded, but we’re short by several thousand dollars.
Currently, we are having our biggest donation drive of the year, and our goal is to try to have most of the education building paid off from this. We’re also having a bit of a friendly competition among the volunteers to see who can get the most donations.
The best part of this is no matter how small the donation may be, we have donors who are going to amplify the donations. So even if you only give a small amount, it will be worth a lot more!

To donate, go here.
Thank you in advance to everyone who gives or reblogs to spread this!
The promised animal tax:

This whole time, every time I saw this owl picture on social media, I thought this pretty owl was photoshopped. No. It turns out he's a rare "Black Barn owl." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHgCjoWiaSk
youtube
1 in a 100,000 barn owls are born with the melanistic gene (meaning they turn out black instead of white).
And usually the poor hatchling is rejected by the mother and either killed by her or thrown out of the nest (according to this bird expert in the attached video).
I know that it was proven false in regard to white ravens being rejected and that albino ravens are NOT killed by their mothers (that one is a myth) but it seems mother barn owls aren't as kind as ravens. I kind of hope that this one is proven to be false too. The one in the video was born in captivity.
Barn owls are usually mostly white. The black ones are so pretty, I think I have a new favorite bird. They look like they're made of the night sky. It's sad that the black ones can only live in captivity because they are rejected by their mothers and become targets of other birds in the wild. Poor little, pretty, outcasts.
All because they look like they were painted with the night's paint brush. It's supposedly a rare mutation but honestly, you'd think the black barn owl coloring would make night hunting easier.

I'll add more info later, but yay I made a couple Yaelokre ocs. Whisper the Mouse and Reyn the Black Rabbit. I'll add more info later. Whisper is a shy bookworm, who loves reading about magic. Reyn is a bit competitive and a trickster, They love to tease Whisper but they're actually super protective.
I also made this one with a super cool picrew :D
Tumblr media
Anyway, Yaelokre is my current fixation. Their art and music are hauntingly beautiful and somehow manage to fill me with both nostalgia and wonder.

Familiars
Been thinking about giving these two familiars, and ended up on a Barn Owl for Amari and a "Black Dragon" lizard for Mara!
Barn Owls are weird little guys who scream like banshees, and because of this they have have been associated with death and evil forces. What's more perfect for this vengeful witch lady than that?
Aaaand Black Dragons can grow up to 150 cm (5 ft) which means that sooner or later, Mara is going to be hauling around a carnivorous lizard that's almost the same size as her 💀
Their introduction post

Might turn into a rant but here we go I guess
Ever since learning what therianthropy and alterhumanity is all the way back when I was like 15 or 16, I finally had the words to describe what I am and immediately had the feeling and audible thought of "I am a wolf, this is me." And that still is a very big part of my identity. But something in the back of my mind always lurks, and I avoid it a lot. It's there, sometimes forgotten but still there. And it's the topic of potentially being a shapeshifter kin.
I wanted absolutely nothing to do with being a shapeshifter from the very start, feeling like that was too "over powered" and since it's not physically possible then I cannot be that thing, really only daydreaming about morphing into a specific creatures or suddenly having specific appendages (wings, horns, tail, etc.) usually in times of need or during heavy emotional states. But also the whole "if you think you can turn into your kin type then you're mentally ill and should seek help" scared me away from even the thought of it for a very long time.
I'm older now, and trying to figure out my identity all over again. So now I'm maybe wondering if that IS a possibility for me. I still don't know how I feel about the idea, I don't think I like it much at the moment, but I'm more open to it nowadays at least.
If anyone else has ever experienced something similar or any shapeshifter kin have any stories of their own about learning and accepting their identity, please feel free to share. I'd like to maybe not push away something that could be a part of who I am, but also maybe give some other's that are also questioning their own identities a bit of encouragement and/or some stories to help them feel less alone. /gen /pos
