King William III and His Worst Nemesis
(Who was as cunning as a fox what used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning)
Tumblr media
Mural in Belfast, image by Yamen, via Wikimedia Commons.
So, I noticed something. This is the Loyalist Sandy Row mural in Belfast. It features William III, the royal cypher of William and Mary, some decorational elements such as the crown, orange lily and representations of soldiers of the Williamite army and... this font (set in bold on the mural):
Tumblr media
The British designer Bob Anderton designed ITC Blackadder in 1996, basing the name off the hit historical comedy TV series, and having taken inspiration from from ornate examples of 16th century handwriting in general, added a certain eerily trembling je ne sais quoi drawn from the post-torture signatures of Guy Fawkes:
Tumblr media
Clearly however, his most prominent source of inspiration was the first appearance of Edmund, the Black Adder on British TV screens in 1983:
Tumblr media
And here for comparison, The Black Adder in Anderton's ITC Blackadder:
Tumblr media
The font used in the first series did not reappear throughout the series; seasons 2, 3 and 4 used different designs that aimed to immitate the artistic style or if you will, 'vibe', of the period it is set in:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But why am I telling you all this? And where does the Sandy Row mural tie into it all?
Well, in the intro to Blackadder the Third, we see this book on the shelf:
Tumblr media
Clearly alluding to the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745, the intro implies that one of the Blackadder-incarnations must have been de-throned in the Glorious Revolution, with subsequent generations attempting to reclaim the throne, leading to said rebellions.
In the Blackadder-universe, it is thus all but established, James II did not exist. In his place, a Blackadder must have reigned (they do have royal blood going back to the Plantagenets after all, and the existence of Blackadders throughout the centuries implies that Prince Edmund, the "Black Vegetable", must have had offspring, however (il-)legitimate) and been dethroned by William III, presumably jointly with whoever the Blackadder family-equivalent of Mary II was.
TL;DR: most of the writing on the Sandy Row William of Orange mural is designed in the font of William's (fictional) enemy, a late 17th century member of the Blackadder family.
Now please, will someone be so kind and give me that spin-off? Two somewhat unpleasant, cynical, manipulative little men in huge dark wigs scheming against another anno 1688? And this time, Blackadder actually succeeds in his designs and takes the throne? Pretty please?
Here, I even prepared a chart:

we re-watched all of blackadder s2-4 over the last month or so and that show still rips lol. stephen fry in the 4th season is unrecognizable to me but its such a funny performance. the stupid episode where they have to have a balls to the wall drinking party and host his extremely protestant aunt and uncle on the same night has been burned into my brain for decades

I was tagged by: @matbaynton - thank you! <3
Tag someone you want to know AND/OR some of your besties.
This turned into a monster of a thing so I'm sticking it under a cut!
Favourite colour: I am rubbish at this question. I love various colours in various contexts, but at the moment I am really gravitating towards greens. Green is a colour I haven't paid much attention to before, but for some reason over the last few months I have taken an interest in it. I even bought a solid green jumper!
Tumblr media
Last song: When Things Explode by Unkle. It's a song I first heard on an episode of Person of Interest and it's now on one of my YouTube music playlists. Takes me right back!
Last movie: I had to check my Letterboxd for this - that's how often I'm watching films at the moment! It was the 1995 version of Persuasion that I rewatched at the end of August. A film I only discovered recently but has become one of those instant comforting favourites.
Currently watching: Oh heck - I'm struggling to keep track, there are so many! I'm watching The English at the moment. Also Outsiders series 2, Taskmaster series 16, New Girl (on season 2), This Farming Life series 6 with my dad on a Sunday morning, All Creatures Great and Small series 4, Fletchers' Family Farm series 2, Schitt's Creek with @phantomviola (on season 5), The Musketeers (series 2) and Black Books (series 3) with @userdjarin and who could forget Our Flag Means Death season 2 which has taken over my brain! Along with all that I squeezed in a Primeval series 2 rewatch which I finished the other night. [slaps roof of my brain] this bad boy can fit so many narratives in it.
Other stuff I watched this year: HAH! I have an IMDb list of TV shows I've watched this year! It's long as heck! Silk, The IT Crowd, Black Sails, The Last of Us, Lost in Space, Endeavour, The Terror, Arrested Development, Community, Vicious, Prehistoric Planet, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, Ted Lasso, Miranda, The North Water, His Dark Materials, And Then There Were None, Jonathan Strange & Mister Norrell, The Great British Sewing Bee, The Bear, Blackadder, 30 Rock, Chernobyl and The Expanse. And those are just the ones worth mentioning! And some of these I watched four times! Okay, one thing. Okay, it was The Terror.
As for films, it's a poor show this year - I haven't watched as many (see above for reason why). I have seen the latest Spiderverse film and I've love to see Barbie!
Shows I dropped this year/didn’t finish: The Mandalorian (sob!), Vikings (I think I was maybe an episode or two shy of finishing the first season but... man... I just wasn't having fun), My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (to be fair this might have been last year, I can't remember, but I know I stopped a few episodes into season 2), Fleabag (I watched one or two episodes... wasn't quite for me).
Currently reading: Darwin by Adrian J. Desmond and James R. Moore (about 100 pages in but I'm taking this one slow because I'm not hyperfixating on him) and Dead Famous by Greg Jenner which I am taking even slower. I've read quite a few books related to the Franklin Expedition this year (thanks, The Terror) and for a while I was reading pretty solidly but I guess that's what hyperfixation does to you!
Currently listening to: I'm not really listening to music much these days thanks to YouTube's annoying ad blocker pop-up so I'm typing this in silence, haha! But podcast-wise I'm doing great. Three Bean Salad is probably my favourite podcast at the moment. The humour is just too good, and I look forward to hearing the lads every week. I'm also binging The Rest is History which is a bit more serious but still has its fun moments. I'm also listening to Off Menu, No Such Thing as a Fish, The Bones Booth, Taskmaster: The Podcast, The Mariner's Mirror Podcast, and odd episodes of RHLSTP if I know the guest. I save podcasts for when I'm doing something like washing the dishes, walking or driving.
Currently working on: Now that the puppy I found at the end of August is vaccinated, she can go out and about, and that has led to me abandon the polymer clay for a while to return to a hobby that I haven't spent much time on since early 2020 at the latest. I wanted to make her some nice collars and leads so she looks smart for our walks which I will inevitably be photographing. I know it's kind of hard to see but I made this collar and lead for her.
Tumblr media
I was a bit worried that I'd forgotten how to sew the leather but thankfully not. I have a few more straps of leather lying around that I'd like to make into collars and leads as well. And several rope leads that need whipping (you wrap thinner twine around the thicker rope to finish it and protect the end from fraying) but I'm having to take my time with those because the twine is murder on my soft, delicate, feminine hands. I can whip maybe four leads before my fingers are red. It's worth the pain!
Current obsession: Our Flag Means Death has taken over my life once again. Whatever happens in the finale next week, I know I will be a mess. Heck, I'm already a mess.
I'm tagging: some recent mutuals so we can get to know each other, but no pressure! @tigerballoons, @woofety, @jackharkness, @jddryder, @ajcrowleys and @skatingthinandice! <3

Ahead of the NCIS franchise’s actual 1,000th episode (airing next Monday at 9/8c), CBS this Monday night served up the Entertainment Tonight special NCISverse: The First 1,000.
Hosted by ET‘s Kevin Frazier, The First 1,000 featured some new/new-ish interviews with past and present franchise cast members, a few archival Q&As and clips galore from NCIS and its assorted offshoots.
Closing out the retrospective was acknowledgment of cast members who are no longer with us (including NCIS: Los Angeles‘ Miguel Ferrer and NCIS‘ David McCallum), plus some hype for the franchise’s two upcoming offshoots: NCIS: Origins (aka the Young Gibbs prequel series starring Austin Stowell) and the yet-to-be-titled, Europe-set Tony/Ziva series starring Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo.
Tumblr media
For hardcore NCIS megafans, brand-new reveals were probably hard to come by. But for the slightly more casual fan such as myself, there were fun facts to be found. Such as….
1. Spun off of a JAG two-parter, NCIS was at first envisioned as following the Law & Order format — half investigation, half courtroom — but viewer affinity for the agents’ clue-gathering and Mark Harmon’s character led to a change in the formula.
2. We’ve heard most of these before, but always fun to ponder: Other actors whose names were bandied about for the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs included Harrison Ford, Kevin Bacon, Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy, Alec Baldwin and Patrick Swayze, while a post-Friends Jennifer Aniston was eyed to play the replacement for Tony’s original partner, Viv Blackadder (Robyn Lively),
3. Michael Weatherly recalled that when filming his first scenes as DiNozzo, NCIS co-creator Donald P. Bellisario came up to him on-set and grumbled, “What are you doing, modeling?” Weatherly then resolved to entertain at the very least himself with a more animated performance.
4. In the Season 2 episode “Twilight,” in which Caitlin Todd (played by Sasha Alexander) is shot dead by a sniper, Michael Weatherly can be seen wincing a half-second too soon, before the “blood” squib actually explodes. (See photo above.)
5. Actual NCIS agents had never worn stitched logo caps — until TV’s NCIS came along and sparked interest, and the real-life LEOs requested official ones.
6. Diona Reasonover, who plays Kasie, had no idea that Cote de Pablo was secretly returning as Ziva in the Season 16 finale — until she watched the episode that night!
7. Though not a series regular as McGee until Season 2, Sean Murray holds the record for appearing in the most NCIS episodes: 450 (out of 464). Fun fact within a fact: Murray was originally hired as a one-off guest star, but a subsequent episode came in three minutes short and it was decided to bring the McGee character back to fill time.
8. It would take almost 30 days to watch all 1,000 NCIS franchise episodes. Without bathroom breaks!
9. For its headquarters scenes, NCIS: Sydney shoots inside an actual, old restaurant space at the Walsh Bay Wharves along Sydney Harbour.

Have you by any change watched Blackadder (I'm looking for more people who know it to talk to😅)?
(it's a history show with Rowan Atkinson as protagonist who is followed through centuries and generations. Both Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie are recurring guest stars - Stephen Fry as part of the main cast in season 2 and 4, Hugh Laurie in season 3 and 4).
I have actually watched one season of the show (Blackadder Goes Forth) and I’d be willing to talk to you about it. (I’ll try to watch the rest but I will need to find a way first).
This also reminds me I have an unfinished Blackadder piece that I forgot to post

(real answer) I think X-Files is actually a pretty good suggestion, Twilight Zone is another one that's pretty good for binging cuz it's always kind of different. I've never actually gotten into it, but a lot of folks on here like it and it has 15 Seasons, so ...Supernatural? if you want something more on the comedy side Psych as 8 seasons, Red Dwarf has 12, and then A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Blackadder, and Monty Python all have 4. But they can also all be watched kind of interchangeably leading to 12 between them, some of it hasn't aged the best though soooo
p.s. I hope you're doing alright<3 shit can be fucked sometimes
screaming at the idea of being so distraught that fuckign supernatural becomes my coping mechanism

Crusaders Super Rugby Pacific match Preview
The Waratahs of New South Wales and the Crusaders of Christchurch, New Zealand, will play a crucial match on Friday in Super Rugby Pacific round eight that might determine the future paths of both teams’ seasons.
Both have had unsatisfactory beginnings. Before defeating the Hamilton-based Chiefs in round six, the reigning champion Crusaders dropped their opening five games. The Sydney-based Waratahs had great expectations going into the season, but they have only won one game and are currently sitting one spot above the Crusaders in 10th position in the standings.
Now that the regular season is halfway through, both clubs must win practically every game left to have any hope of making a significant appearance in the postseason.

hey I see you reblog Hugh Laurie stuff quote a lot and was wondering if you've watched Blackadder? there's a wonderful scene where he had to dress up as a woman in series 4 and he's honestly never been so beautiful
hello! no I haven't seen it, but ooh that sounds wonderful
to be honest, I've only marathoned a few seasons of House MD while I was high out of my mind, so far, but thank you very much for the suggestion!

top 5 tv shows!
Hi! Ooh, what a question! Because I'm currently hyper-fixated on boat media, I'm very biased here! I'm also hesitant to call an unfinished show amazing because endings are important to me... I've been sitting here for far too long and thinking and this is hard!
1. Black Sails 2. Galavant 3. Person of Interest 4. The Musketeers 5. Derry Girls
I can't just shout out some other amazing shows, though! The Terror (season 1), Black Books, Blackadder, Schitt's Creek and The Good Place!
ask me my top 5/top 10 anything
