Hello from the Blue Mosque in Turkey! 🇹🇷

Also know as Sultan Ahmed Mosque, it was designed by architect Sedefkar Mehmed Agha and built between 1609 and 1617 during the rule of Ahmed I. It is still a functioning mosque today and is built with an architectural style of Islamic and Classical Ottoman.

It’s probably one of the most touristy places and super crowded, but I had to see it. Women are supposed to wear a head covering inside the mosque, but outside in courtyard you don’t need to. I’m not religious, but some things you do out of respect for other cultures. Maybe I don’t know everything about Islamic culture, but what I thoroughly appreciate is the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into spaces, tile work and precision in artistry. I wish I could’ve take a closer look at the ceiling, but it’s impressive just seeing it from the ground.

Paper that could be rolled started to be made in China with plant fibers in 105 B.C. There is a deep and ancient spirit about Istanbul. In that city, if you ever visit it, you may, if you allow it, let yourself be connected to an almost ancient part of you. So glad to receive this picture of the Blue Mosque from @sienchi ! Follow him on FB or on IG of his Turkish travels. Swipe right to see my painting of this majestic piece of architecture. I drew and painted it on the cardboard partly for two reasons. I had no more paper left that day and I felt the brown cardboard expressed the sentiment I felt of that place. A local told me Sultan Ahmet 1 built it for his wife. Google these days throw up none of that reference. But for years and in the moment of creating that piece, I try to remember what young love might look like for these two. What color would I pick out for my loved one? That was the question that went through my head when I saw the beautiful Iznik tiles. Would blue be my color of love? (No, I would want pink mixed in.) Anyway Sultan Ahmet 1 began the project when he was 19 amid the decline of the Ottoman Empire. If anything, I am moved and touched by his gentle heart, if the local lore that he built it for a woman he loved holds true.
