Cosmere Characters Play D&D

Somehow, Dungeons & Dragons, the role-playing game, has arrived in the Cosmere, and now everyone is playing it. What would that be like?

1. Kaladin: Has THE most ridiculous good luck with dice

DM: Okay, Kaladin. You're up. You're the only member of your party still conscious, and you only have 3 hit points left. DM: Lord Evil is about to activate the doomsday device that will level the capital city. Your weapon is broken, and you're barely conscious. What will you do? Kaladin: ...I want to pick up a rock and throw it into the gears of the machine. DM: ...The machine that is 60 feet away from you with a fist-sized opening? Kaladin: Yes. DM: Well...you can roll for it, but...you'll have disadvantage... Kaladin: Nat 20. Twice. DM: A-Again?! I swear you save your Nat 20s for the most dramatic possible moments! Kaladin: Dice love me.

2. Kelsier: Always tries to fast-talk the DM

Kelsier: I would like to pick up the crowbar with my mage hand. DM: Okay... Kelsier: And I would like to drop it on the bandit's head. DM: You can't attack with mage hand. Kelsier: Attacking? I'm not attacking. I'm just dropping something. DM: As an attack. Kelsier: Well, okay. I'll just lift the crowbar high above the bandit's head with my mage hand. That's not an attack. DM: Okay... Kelsier: Then I'm gonna dismiss mage hand. DM: ... Kelsier: What happens to the crowbar? Does it...drop? DM: ... Kelsier: [smiles sweetly]

2. Lift: Needs a DM who likes open world campaigns...or who knows Lift real well

Wyndle, the DM: Excellent job, mistress! You've rescued the prince, and received a Royal Feast as a reward. Wyndle, the DM: What will you do now? Lift: I wanna go to Beach Town. Wyndle: Beach Town, the name I came up with on the fly five sessions ago? Lift: Yeah. Wyndle: The place where that one mean messenger said he was headed next? Lift: The one who kicked that dog, yeah. Wyndle: [grabs a notebook from his box and flips it open] Wyndle: Ready! Lift: ... Lift: You knew? Wyndle: I had a hunch, mistress!

3. Steris: Is a rules lawyer...for good

Steris: As we move through canyon, Lady Stesir will keep track of our progress by sketching a map. DM: Sure! Why don't you roll me an Intelligence check to see how good your mapping is. Steris: Actually, per the Players Handbook pg. 185, no ability check is required for mapping the party's progress through an area. DM: Really? Okay! Steris: [whispering] I got your back, Lady Stesir.

4. Blushweaver: Keeps rolling to seduce everyone

DM: The dragon rears back, preparing to unleash its fiery breath! Blushweaver: I roll to seduce the dragon!! DM: ... DM: Look, dragons are sentient, but they're generally not interested in... Blushweaver: I roll Persuasion with Expertise, add my Proficiency Modifier and my Charisma Modifier, plus my bonuses from Bless and Bardic Inspiration...and I get 32! DM: ... Blushweaver: I'm so excited about my new dragon boyfriend!

5. Shallan: Cares a LOT about character creation

Shallan: [sitting at the table with a full stack of character drawings, having used lightweaving to turn herself into a full-on Orc Barbarian] Adolin: [wearing "a bit of a jaunty hat" for his bard character] Adolin: ...I've never felt underdressed before.

6. Wayne: Loves to role-play

Wayne: And as Lord Bandlebutt falls to his knees in the rain, he thinks back to the last time he saw that flower, when his adoptive fox parents turned back for the last time before disappearing forever into those woods... Wayne: "I should have said something back then," Lord Bandlebutt whispers, "I should have told them some rocks smoothed by the stream wish they could have remained rough." Wayne: "After what happened during the Seven Snake Festival, they would have understood..." DM: [openly weeping] Oh, Lord Bandlebutt! Wayne: [normal voice, also weeping] I know, I know!

7. Vin: Wishes they could skip the whole "role-play" part

Vin: Okay, so my damage for that attack is 13. DM: With a mighty thrust of your longsword, you chop of the doppleganger's head and it falls to the ground! DM: You just killed someone who looks exactly like you--you're watching your own head roll across the ground toward your feet. DM: How does Lady Silverteeth feel in this moment? Vin: Uh Vin: ...Bad? DM: [Remembering to always match the player's level of comfort with role playing] Yeah, I bet she does.

8. Painter: Has THE most ridiculous bad luck with dice

DM: You see the vampire in the street below. You think she's following someone...perhaps her next victim. Painter: My Assassin will jump down from above and Sneak Attack her! I get a Advantage since it's my first attack, plus I have my new +2 dagger! Painter: My cloak will sweep back behind me as I land, soft as the night air, and plunge my dagger into her heart! DM: Roll first. Painter: Hi-yah! [dice clatter] DM: ... Painter: ... Painter: I assume I miss entirely and fall onto my butt? Into a puddle? DM: Into a puddle, yeah. Painter: ...Every [lowly] time.

I'm kind of trying to draw like I used to draw in procreate,, so I whipped up a drawing of Blushweaver from Warbreaker,,, my bf suggested some Brandon Sanderson books to me and I'm liking em so far! :)

Brandon Sanderson's true calling is writing romance.

No no, I know he's supposedly bad at writing romance, but I ADORE how he writes women. 😂😭🔥 Oh my goodness I adore all his women. I adore how no two are the same. I adore how they feel like people. 🥰🥰

I love Shallan's horny desire and identity crisis. I adore how she's brave and also frightened of a lot of things, and it's not like her fear is mentioned in passing, Shallan is scared all the time. I love that her trauma is ADDRESSED! EXTENSIVELY! Cause in the name of making female characters bad ass, some stories give them trauma and then just never touch on it at all, or how this affects a lot of their decisions, leading to the absolute worst takes about those characters. 😭😭😭 I love Shallan's battle with her attraction to two different people and how that worsened her identity crisis as she tried to figure out who she was supposed to be and who she truly wanted to be. Of course, it's not a Shallan rant if I don't truly enjoy her art. 😌✨ And perhaps we only have Media Literate people in the Brandon Sanderson universe so there's no one mocking her passion like they do with Feyre.

I love Jasnah being a stiff possibly aroace stick-in-the-mud 💀. I love how she lectures as a teacher but also a mother with no interest in having actual children of her own. ❤️ I love how they don't just make her stiff but she's also got really strong platonic relationships that make her soft and anxious when she rests at night because she so terribly wants to use the intelligence she's been blessed with to protect the people she loves. 🥺 And Jasnah loves. And it is not romantic love. And her love is beautiful too.

I love Navani the huntress who bagged her man with the power of books of all things 😂 (reverse beauty and the beast). To be honest, I was unsure about Navani at first, but she's grown on me. She was really forward. 💀😌❤️ Also, I love how despite being a sort of secondary character, her trauma is not overlooked. She loves her children so dearly. 😔 I want Navani to stop losing things.

I love Lift, the lazy younger girl who cares more about satisfying her hunger even on a battlefield.😂 She could not care less about an assassin approaching her. She's the boss of everyone. She's about thirteen but she gives everyone orders. She tries to ignore the things that weigh heavy in her heart, after all, she's a child. A child with an awesome power. 😎 And a growing circle of friends.

I love Siri,🥹🥰 the strong-headed troublemaker who is reasonably scared of a lot of things but can't bring herself to follow rules that don't make sense.

I love Vivienna, who thought that she was very put together and politically savvy, lost in a world that frightens her, like a frog from the well viewing the deep blue sea. She so badly wants to do the right thing, but she's also lost and she wants to go home, and I relate to that so hard. 😭 Fortunately she's got a group of bandits who've sort of adopted her, so she's going to be okay. Though she might have to rewrite her black and white moral code. 😂

I love Jewel, the grumpy woman with no colours (who seems to still be clinging to the man she loved and lost 💔).

I love Blushweaver. 😂 Her shameless desire for power is hilarious, and I like how she's upfront about her desires for Lightsong, figuring manipulation would never work on him anyway. I like 'aggressive' women as they call it. A woman who will chase what she wants with zero humility. She's also very funny, intentionally. 😂❤️

I like Vin. I love that she's a girl who got taken from the streets but she loves balls and makeup and big beautiful dresses. 🥹❤️ No daydreaming about rags or suffering as if there's any joy to be had in poverty. 💀 I love that her power is a part of her and she shreds people as easily as paper. And she'll do it to protect the people she loves. I love that both the warrior in the dark and the lady in the ballroom are her, one and the same, and I love that Elend loves and accepts both parts of her. 😭 Vin has lost so many people that she has to hold on to Elend, holding tight with hands like daggers piercing his clothes but he holds her just the same and it burns! 😭😭

I love Evi. She was such a pathetic fragile creature, but I love Evi. I love how she would always ultimately be Dalinar's undoing. All she wanted to do was love and she spread love to everything she touched. And it was that love that broke Dalinar....so cleanly. (I wish there was more Evi fan art, she sounds so beautiful and wonderful and so dainty compared to Dalinar. I think of them as a Bull and a Dandelion. He would always lean close to gather her scent but one breath would blow her away to nothing and she'd be lost 💔😭)

I hate Illami or Illari or whatever they call her. That's the thing about excellent writing. Sometimes you got to write characters for people to hate. And oh I hate that woman. 😂 It's just a shame. Her intelligence would have meant so much to them.

I love Brandon Sanderson women. I love the ones I love. I love the ones I hate too. It's nice to have nasty women once in a while. Women should get to have nasty hobbies too. 😌✨

This is one of my favorite books!

I started this uhm *checks watch* February of 2021. You want to know why I abandoned it? Because I didn’t want to draw Nightblood (the sword). So that’s some art reality for you.

Anyway I finished it. Because sometimes I think about the people who run the Coppermind, and I want to be helpful.

The best part of Warbreaker is that each character thinks they're in a very different book.

Susebron: "I'm the prince from a cautionary fairy tale!"

Siri: "I'm the rebellious protagonist girl from a light-dystopian YA novel!"

Blushweaver: "I'm a master manipulator from Game of Thrones!"

Nightblood: "I'm in a buddy cop comedy! Oh, or a sword anime! Oh OH! I'm Pinocchio and I'm going to be a real boy!"

Vasher: "No we're not, and no you're fucking not."

Lightsong: "I'm the Hardy Boys! From the Hardy Boys!"

Vivenna: "I'M IN HELL!!!!!!"

Should You Invite These Cosmere Characters to Boardgame Night?

As requested by anon. :)

I've done two boardgame-related posts before this (I love boardgames): Favorite Boardgames of Each Knights Radiant Order and Should You Invite the Shards to Boardgame Knight?

In this list, allow me to provide some advice about whether or not you should invite these Cosmere characters to your next boardgame night!

1. Adolin: Yes

Adolin is a delight at every social gathering. He brings wine that somebody at the store told him was good. He has fun with every game whether he wins or loses. By the end of the night, he is somehow the best friend of each individual guest.

2. Shallan: Yes

Is she cheating? Maybe. But she makes a lot of puns and you know that if she tries to cheat TOO much, Radiant will stop her.

3. Kaladin: No

He wins everything. It's annoying. He joined Settlers of Katan twenty minutes late and STILL won. How does he do it???

4. Kelsier: Yes

At first you were admittedly intimidated, as Kelsier kept smiling to himself and saying things like "Just wait until I reveal my Master Plan!" But actually, he kinda loses games...a lot. Keeps smiling, though, so you assume he's having a good time! What a good sport!

5. Vin: Only if you like losing

Like Kaladin, Vin wins all. the. time. But unlike Kaladin, she doesn't come late & then win in a blaze of sudden glory, no. She simply...destroys you. Continuously and brutally for the entire night.

6. Harmony: No

No offense to Harmony, who's a good dude 'n' all, but man, he takes FOREVER to make his next move. It's like--we're playing Sorry. You either move forward 10 or back 1. It's just two choices! How is he thinking for like 10 billion years??

7. Lopen: Maybe

Lopen likes to play around and tease people. He MAY mock you a little too much when your attempt to "Draw 2" him backfires and you find yourself drawing 8 cards in Uno... but other than that, he's a good time.

8. Blushweaver: Maybe

You didn't realize checkers even COULD be played as "Strip Checkers."

9. Tien: Yes

Tien is mostly concerned with making sure that everyone else is having a good time. Even after he gets killed during a round of "Werewolves," he continues to grin and encourage the rest of you to have a good time. W-Wait, why do you suddenly feel like crying?

10. Skar: Yes

Like Tien, Skar also seems chiefly concerned with making sure everyone else has a good time. Bonus: he's GREAT at explaining the rules!

11. Lightsong: Depends on how competitive you are

Ask yourself this: if there's a guy there who wins every game despite clearly and loudly not understanding the rules, would that be fun? If yes, then go for it. If no, then don't invite Lightsong--he doesn't understand how to play Hearts and he doesn't care to, yet he has shot the moon TWICE.

12. Nale: No

No one likes a rules lawyer.

13. Shai: Yes

Shai knows all of these obscure, complicated games that actually turn out to be really fun!

14. Hoid: No

Hoid knows all of these obscure, complicated games and while he does explain the rules, you can't shake the feeling that he's actually playing by an entirely different set of rules that he's not being totally honest about...

15. Elend: Yes

Elend was born to participate in board game nights weekly.

16. Telsin: No

She cheats 100% of the time. You didn't even know it was POSSIBLE to cheat in Connect 4, but she somehow found a way...

17. Raboniel: Well...

Raboniel is ENORMOUSLY competitive and cares very deeply about winning...but she also respects the game. She is surprisingly gracious about losing despite her eyes blazing with the heat of ten million suns as she slapped down that 7-letter word in Scrabble. Yet when you responded with your own, better 7-letter word, clinching the victory, you could tell that she respected you for it.

...But on the other hand, you've been clammy with fear sweats for 45 minutes now.

Blushweaver popped a grape into her mouth before offering the bowl to Mercystar. The other goddess sat on the other side of an over-stuffed couch, legs crossed primly. Her face and figure were gorgeous as always, their radiance managing to almost atone for the sin of the hideous gold and orange dress she wore. The ruffled skirt and fitted bodice clashed terribly with the yellow tufted cushions that seemed to cover every surface in the elaborate sitting room of this gods-forsaken palace.

Colors, thought Blushweaver. If I had to live in this hideous place I’d have given up my breath long ago.

Despite the horrors surrounding her, the Goddess of Honesty and Interpersonal Relations managed to hide her disgust and smile benevolently at Mercystar.

“So anyway, we were talking about prudent preparations,” she said earnestly. “Lightsong and I have decided it’s wise to consolidate security phrases for the Lifeless so that if one of us is…indisposed…the others can step in. It's clearly what's best for Hallandren, don't you agree, dear?”

Mercystar furrowed her brow, obviously thinking hard.

“But…aren’t the phrases supposed to remain secret?” Her voice was slow and girlish. “Did Lightsong really agree to this plan? He was here just the other day and didn’t say anything about it. Maybe we should wait and ask him.”

Blushweaver seethed internally. She glanced around at the priests standing on the outskirts of the room, faces stoic. No one was going to give her what she wanted, it seemed. She didn’t want to wait for Lightsong and she only partially trusted him, anyway. It was always highly suspicious when someone refused to be seduced by her. Not a single person besides that frustrating man had ever rejected her advances during the fifteen years since her return, in fact.

The thought suddenly gave her an idea…
