Location: The Library Bar, The Rittenhouse Hotel, PhiladelphiaDate of Visit: August 30, 2024 Tam and I arrived at The Library Bar around 8 PM, excited to explore what this spot inside The Rittenhouse Hotel had to offer. From the moment we walked in, it was clear this wasn’t your average bar. The hotel itself is a beacon of luxury, and the bar, nestled on the first floor, was easy to find with…

Story Prompt 38
In a small town where the sunsets painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, there lived an ambitious soul ready to face a formidable opponent - math homework. Our protagonist, armed with determination and a pencil, stared down the menacing equations on the crumpled sheets.
The room was silent except for the occasional tap of the pencil on the desk. It was a battlefield, and our hero, with a furrowed brow, was ready for the fight. The numbers on the paper seemed to mock, but our protagonist had a steely resolve.
As the night progressed, frustration turned into whispered negotiations with the stubborn math problems. "Come on, you can't be that difficult," muttered our hero, as if trying to reason with the elusive solutions.
Suddenly, the window creaked open, letting in a gentle breeze. A mysterious figure, clad in the shadows, appeared. "Need a hand with those tricky numbers?" the enigmatic stranger offered, a mischievous glint in their eye.
Our protagonist, cautious yet curious, nodded. The stranger took a seat, and with a flair for the dramatic, began explaining math concepts in a way that made them sound like the plot twists of a gripping novel.

For the greatest crime of the poor in the eyes of the wealthy has always been to strike back. To fail to suffer in silence and instead disrupt their lives and their fantasies of a compassionate society that coincidentally set them on top. To say no.

*banging fists on table* more mentally ill characters in stories that aren't just about them being mentally ill! More mentally ill characters in sci-fi, in fantasy, in romance and fun and high stakes situations and everything in between, as the heroes, as complex individuals, multifaceted and treated with respect, not having their needs and differences ignored or skirted around but, again, not having them be their only trait or plot point/entire premise! Please, I'm begging, on my hands and knees, there's a place for these topics and characters in realistic, reflective and literary fiction, yeah, but there's also a place in those magical, mystical, action packed, mysterious and alien worlds, give them to ME

When Algy got up on Friday morning and checked his Tumblr account, to see what his friends might have been up to overnight, he got a very big surprise…
Like most people, Algy usually found that the contents of his Inbox comprised begging letters and sundry advertisements for products or services of no interest to a fluffy bird, so when he saw that the Inbox was not empty on this occasion he did not feel particularly excited.
Imagine his astonishment and delight, therefore, when Algy discovered that far from an appeal for funds or an invitation to invest in a concern of decidedly dubious merit, the missive he had received contained a gift from an anonymous friend, who had sent him a Tumblr Mart Literary Badge! Algy was absolutely thrilled. What a lovely, kind gesture! And what an extraordinary honour for a daft fluffy bird!
At first Algy was not quite certain what he had been given, but on further investigation he quickly learned that while he had been asleep, Tumblr had invented some cute new badges to brighten the lives of the folk in the tumblrverse, and to help them generate much-needed funds to keep the platform going, and that these badges could not only be purchased for one's own use but gifted to other Tumblr users.
Algy had no idea who sent him this wonderful gift, but being keen to justify his generous friend's opinion of him as soon as possible, he tucked his shiny new badge safely behind his ear feathers and begged the loan of a typewriter from his startled assistant.
Settling down on the garden table to commence his first composition as an officially badged literary bird, Algy found that loading the typewriter with a sheet of paper was not exactly straightforward if one only had fluffy feathers instead of fingers, and using the three dimensional typewriter keyboard was even more challenging. But those were not the only problems. Once he had got everything in place, Algy found he was staring at a blank piece of paper… Whatever could he write? 😀
Algy sends a very, very special fluffy hug to whoever sent him this lovely gift, and hopes that that person will continue to enjoy his ongoing adventures. 🤗😍

Some Jurassic Park Daily Reflection-ft Life Finds A Way
I know I’m a few days late to when this chapter was the assigned reading, but I’m still going to make a post about this specific part of the book. I want to highlight the quote in the post title “Life…Finds A Way”. This small phrase has essentially become the slogan of the whole entire franchise, and arguably taken on a life of its own (no pun intended). So I want to talk a bit about the scene where we are first introduced to it, before even the iconic scene in the first film, to when we see the equivalent of that scene in the book.
It’s part of a much larger spiel, which is pretty par for the course for Book!Ian Malcolm, who is prone to long diatribes, many paragraphs long, detailing his opinions on everything from fashion to capitalism to natural history and beyond.
Anyway, the scene where this spiel takes place is actually not the scene in the laboratory like in the film, but rather a scene with an injured stegosaurus (triceratops in the movie). Dr. Sattler and Dr. Grant are trying to help the vet Dr. Gerry Harding assist the dinosaur to recovery, and Tim, Lex, Ian, Ed Regis (a PR representative who was not in the film) and Donald Gennaro (the lawyer, who is essentially a different character in the books) are all crowding around, too. Lex gets board and tries to play catch with some of the adults-Gennaro agrees and has a sidebar conversation with Malcolm at the same time. During this conversation, Gennaro essentially says that he thinks Malcolm’s use of chaos theory is too broad (“is anything not predicted by your theory” he point blank asks). He is skeptical, but Malcolm is able to provided specific examples beyond “things are unpredictable”, which Malcolm is able to do, listing many specifics. When trying to explain his underlying perspective, we get the basis memorable monolouge from the film: “The history of evolution is that life escapes all barriers. Life breaks free. Life expands to new territories. Painfully, perhaps even dangerously. But life finds a way…I don’t mean to be philosophical, but there it is.”
What’s most interesting to me is that unlike the pristine lab setting where we get this in the film, Malcolm outside talking to his colleague who’s playing catch with a young kid. Not only does it seem less grandiose, in a way, but it seems to have a more practical application, too. Oftentimes, in the later films or even other media, this idea of “life finds a way” takes on this “humanity will survive” kind of context that feels totally applicable, but a bit disconnected from the film scene imo.
But in the book, the entire spiel is happening over a game of catch, a game that means a lot to Lex, who, not fully known to Ian and Gennaro at this point, is having a very rough time at home. She feels unheard and ignored by all the adults in her life, and excluded even by Tim at points. But in this moment, Gennaro takes the time to indulge her game, and as far as Malcolm’s concerned, the more people to hear him talk, the merrier. In the midst of this hectic tour of a prehistoric zoo, they have found a small moment to connect, to build bonds, to be a community, and that represents the survival of humanity and the human spirit to me in a very visceral way.
It makes all the “life finds a way” tied to humanity exclusively make even more sense, too. Because while Malcolm is talking about things on a grand history scale, he’s also doing so while participating in/witnessing this small human moment, and it’s kind of perfect, in a way.
Anyway, I have a lot of thoughts about this and wanted to share!
