Books on Libby have started disappearing.

My friend pointed it out first, and then I started noticing too. Why would books that multiple libraries definitely, 100% had digital access to a couple of months/weeks/days ago disappear?

Amazon is invoking exclusive rights to them.*

Ebooks that the public library once had digital copies of are now only available through Amazon. Audible boasts on their covers about Audible-exclusive audiobooks that did not used to be Audible-exclusive. Entire series and collections are disappearing overnight.

Keep your eyes on the privatization of media and your libraries.

*earlier versions said "getting"; Amazon has likely always had these rights, but in the face of boycotts they're tightening the leash, so to say

Simply borrow the ebook from libby, download it as a .ascm (drm epub thing) on your computer, then run the .ascm file through a drm remover of your choice (third-party plugins in Calibre is what to do). you can then keep the drm-free .epub and return the libby loan. Boom.

Win/win/win.

You get to keep the ebook (ALSO libby usually has high-quality files. so it's better than piracy).

You're borrowing the book from the library. They get their numbers up, you're supporting the author and your library.

🔥 Character Arc – People change. Or they don’t and that says something too. How does your character evolve (or refuse to) over the course of your story?

"Can my character stay the same?" Sure, if you want to show the cost of not changing. But readers love growth, whether it’s for better or worse.

🔥 Personality, Voice & Expression – Strengths, flaws, quirks, habits, the little things that make them Human.

"Can I just give them a scar and call it depth?" No. A scar is cool, but why does it matter to them? Do they trace it when they’re nervous? Does it make them self-conscious? Does it remind them of a promise, a failure, a night they wish they could forget? The details mean nothing unless they mean everything.

This isn’t some dry, theoretical textbook. This is a no-BS, straight-to-the-heart guide to crafting characters that breathe, bleed, and break hearts—characters that matter.

Humans Are Weird: Marathons

Am I the only one that thinks marathons are weird??? Not because I hate running (which I do) or because of the way people lose toenails (gross) but because of the history of it!! (I do know this is a legend but I like to *think* it actually happened because what a way to rub it in this guy's face)

Human *stretching*: You don't stand a chance. I used to run cross country.

Other human *also stretching*: I've ran four marathons. I am not intimidated.

Alien: What is a marathon?

*Both humans turning, looking far too excited*

Human: it's a long distance run. It can be an accomplishment to finish one.

Other human: 26.2 miles. It's not easy.

Alien: That is...a specific amount.

Other human: Well, there was this guy that ran that far once to announce a victory in battle and he promptly fell over and died.

Alien: so you...run it regularly to prove he was weak?

Human *laughs*: Exaclty

Alien *eyes wide*: You are ruthless.

Humans Are Weird: Weird Pain

I can't be the only that can handle a migraine or nearly breaking a limb with a wince but am rolling on the floor if I stub my toe...right (please validate me in the comments 😅). I can only imagine what an alien species would think... Human *coming back from cliffdiving because of course they never sit still*: Nah, I'll be fine.

Alien *seeing human holding his nose and...bleeding?*: what happened?

Human *shrugs*: I think there was a rock or something. Must have broken my nose.

Alien *is horrified*: we must take you to the medical wing-

Other human: Nah, this is like the rib thing.

Alien *eye witches*: Your nose heals on its own too?

Human: Yeah, I'll be all goo- Fuck! Shit!

Alien *rushing forward*: what's wrong?

Human *shifting onto one leg*: I hit my fucking shin on this table. Son of a bitch, that hurts.

Alien *staring*: does your...shin not heal?

Human *glaring*: it's not fucking broken.

Alien *barely processing*: Your broken bone...is fine but your non broken bone is too much pain?

Human *hisses in pain*: Yes!
