Good news: after a lot of weeks, my air conditioner is fixed!! Also good news: I caught an error in the software at work that was impacting both contractor pay and customer invoicing! Bad news: going through large amounts of data loosely falls under the purview of the department I am now sort of in charge of, which meant my department (which is me and two other people) had to individually open every single order from [specific subset of customers] since the beginning of the year to manually check if either error had occurred. Hundreds of orders, even with a few different criteria we could use to narrow it down. It's done though! I mean the error is not fixed but previous instances of it causing problems are caught and now that we know it exists we can catch future problems before they are invoiced/paid out I have done zero crafting today and I honestly doubt I will get any done lol
#the person behind the yarn#tj talks about work#I am sort of in charge of a department now?#that department is basically data entry/admin#in that my previous job title used to handle contractors and contractor paperwork#but they were not doing as much scheduling because so much time was spent on paperwork#so as a trial run they had me take over doing all the paperwork for two other [job title] as well as my own#which is not hard for me. I've been processing this exact kind of paperwork at one job or another for over a decade#and that helped a lot so they switched things around gave me less contractors#and hired two more people to handle paperwork and a few other data crunch-y office tasks#and I trained them both? and have the ability to assign them tasks and declare things to be part of my department's job#so I am sort of de facto the head of our little department#which is very funny to me because in my previous job a few years back I was the head of the bookkeeping department#because the entire department was me#it was a difficult department to keep on task but I managed lol#more seriously the two people with me in the paperwork department now are absolutely great#they are super nice and we work really well together#we had a conference call between the three of us with a screenshare while I figured out how to fix one of their IT problems#unrelated to the other problem I caught later in the day

Books Recs of 2024
The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. Mystery/fantasy centered around Din, a young assistant investigator assigned to help an eccentric and infamous detective, Ana Dolabra, solve a series of murders. Din is an engraver, his brain altered so he has a photographic memory. However, no one is quite sure how he got his current position, since he failed every single one of his final exams except the combat portion. Ana is an exceedingly odd woman who refuses to go to any crime scene in person and often performs mad science experiments in her spare time. As Din struggles to keep up with the case, which revolves around a bioweapon being unleashed on a series of the empire's best engineers, he also worries what will happen when Ana finally uncovers his secrets.
Highfire by Eoin Colfer. Urban fantasy (very comedic fantasy) about a dragon called Vern (short for Wyvern), who teams up with a juvenile delinquent named Squib (real name Everett Moreau) to take down a corrupt sheriff who is plaguing the Lousiana bayou. Vern is a very small (seven feet long) dragon who is the last of his kind (as far as he knows). When he is spotted by a local troubled teen, his first instinct is to hunt Squib down and kill him, but he quickly realizes the two of them have a common enemy- the murderous sheriff who is running drugs through their territory.
The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. Magical realism about a romantic-minded art historian who is swept off his feet by a mysterious and charming heiress. After a whirlwind courtship, the happy couple return to her childhood home; a Gothic manor on a lonely island. The more time our narrator spends around his wife's past, the more questions are raised- increasingly sinister ones about who she is and what exactly she is capable of. Once upon a time, she was best friends with an equally odd and dreamy little girl named Indigo. But no one has seen Indigo for many years now- and the Flower Bride may be behind her disappearance.
Chlorine by Jade Song. Horror/magical realism. Since childhood, Ren's entire identity has been wrapped up in swimming. If she can be strong enough, fast enough, special enough, success is sure to come her way. As the end of high school approaches, Ren's passion for swimming becomes less about her future, and more about past legends of mermaids and sirens dragging sailors into the deep. School, friends, and her parents' expectations all fall away- Ren will make her home in the water, no matter what she has to do.
We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride & Jo Piazza. Realistic fiction. Jen and Riley have been best friends for as long as they can remember, despite their vastly different childhoods. Riley is from a middle class Black family; Jen was raised by an impoverished white single mother. After twenty years of doing almost everything together, their lives are at a crossroads- Riley is a news anchor about to take Philadelphia by storm, while Jen is expecting her first child with her police officer husband. When Jen's husband is involved in the murder of a Black teenage boy by a fellow officer, Riley finds herself expected to cover the story- and Jen finds herself expected to answer for her husband's actions- and her own beliefs about what racism looks like.
Queenpin by Megan Abbott. Crime thriller/noir. Our nameless heroine lives a mousy existence working as a bookkeeper for a rundown local night club, but her life is turned upside down when the infamous Gloria Denton, a gun moll and smuggler, takes her under her wing. Gloria transforms her young protege from a timid girl to a sophisticated, cunning woman capable of handling gangsters, conmen, thieves, and bookies, but when she falls for the wrong man, her relationship with Gloria is strained, and they must decide just how far they can trust one another.
Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch by Rivka Galchen. Historical fiction. Based on the real life trial of Katharina Kepler, mother of the famed Johannes Kepler, Imperial Mathematician to the Holy Roman Empire. Katharina is a busybody, a domineering and devilishly clever woman with a particular talent for healing. She is also a fiercely loyal mother to her adult children, but when an old neighborhood grudge flares into accusations of poison and witchcraft, Katharina is determined not to meekly confess and beg pardon. The more she lashes out at her neighbors and the authorities, the more charges begin to pile up against her- despite her son's desperate attempts to save her from torture and execution.
Bury Me Deep by Megan Abbott. Crime thriller/noir. Based on a real life murder case in 1931 Phoenix Arizona. Naive and sheltered Marion Seeley is deposited in Phoenix by her disgraced doctor husband, who is forced to take a job with a mining company in South America after his medical license is revoked. Marion befriends the vivacious Louise and Ginny, two fellow nurses, who introduce her to the underground party scene in Phoenix. Politicians and businessmen flock to the secret parties held by them, and it's a quick way to make money on the side. Drawn in by the luxury and thrills, Marion falls in love with Joe Lanigan, a powerful local politician, but as their affair intensifies, her friendship with the other women fractures, culminating in a gruesome crime.

Sazanami crew 2 guide
Notable parts: In Irons, Pebbles on the Shore, Winds of Change, Ripples Make Waves
Chanda: an engineer and Zuko’s first friend from crew 2. They had a rough start when Zuko made an ass out of himself because he didn’t know she was deaf. Between his messy, genuine apology and eagerness to learn how to sign, they became besties. Chanda picked up the hints Zuko kept dropping about the true nature of Air Nomads and confronted him about it, thus ended up joining the Wings.
Amphon: a steward assigned by the Wings to get a read on Zuko. She started off in the Wings forging documents, so she wasn’t too confident in her new job. She and Zuko end up bonding over painting together and soon become friends, and Amphon let the other Wings handle Wing stuff in regards to him. She didn’t want to ruin their new friendship. It all worked out in the end and Amphon eagerly accepted Zuko’s new vision for the Wings
Kavi: a lieutenant in the Navy, transferred from the Army after surviving the Siege of Ba Sing Se. Actually a co-leader of the Fire Nation war resistance group, the Wings. Oh and Lu Ten’s partner. Joined the Sazanami to continue his recovery process and figure out the Wings next step while also honoring Lu Ten’s memory by looking out for Zuko. Even before revealing the Wings, Kavi revealed his connection to Zuko and they grew close through Lu Ten. They love each other as brothers <3
Jae: an ensign in the Navy, actually another co-leader of the Wings. First introduced as Zhao’s bookkeeper, Jae laid low after the Siege and let the Wings go underground for a while. With Kavi’s return, she put them both on the Sazanami to figure out their next steps and to potentially find a new figurehead in Zuko. Instead she found an even bigger radical in Zuko than Lu Ten with his goals to bring airbending back lol. But Jae won’t back down from a challenge and is determined to see the end of the war and the return of airbending
Ye-jun: a seaman from the deck crew who grew up in a pearl-diving family. Joined the military when pollution ruined the family business. First connected with Zuko by helping him free-dive in search of an island Kyoshi sunk, and then he found Zuko interesting enough to keep swinging by. He became a staple member of the mess hall friend group and ended up joining the Wings after Amphon and Zuko were careless in front of him lol
Medic Ume: jaded alcoholic medic who got her ass whipped into gear by Zuko. She started reluctantly giving him medical lessons, and slowly started finding her spark again. Visiting Taku was a bit of a turning point for her, between getting scolded by the Herbalist and learning about their resident healing spirit. She wasn’t the paradigm of work ethic, but she was drinking less and taking her job more seriously by the end
Yan and Souta: joint at the hip engineers. They were in their own little world for a while, but eventually got bored just the two of them and ended up joining the mess hall friend group.
Raju: quiet wall-flower engineer whose presence grew a little stronger through signing with the mess hall friend group
Head Engineer Panit: bit of a worrywart parental figure to the younger engineers, and a self-taught tattooist. He gave quite a few younger crew members cool new tattoos, Zuko included ;3
Steward Ru: a young woman from an island at the southernmost reaches of Fire Nation territory with vast barley fields. She grew up hearing stories about “travelers” from her grandmother, and a staple dish of her island has a striking resemblance to an Air Nomad dish. She helped Zuko recreate tsampa, and felt unsure about what the similarities meant for her home.
Head Steward Shui: a stickler for social hierarchy and decorum. He’s also a huge music buff, and ends up softening some about his views of the seemingly disorderly Sazanami crew thanks to the Yangchen song
Petty Officer Than: just an average soldier who… started quietly questioning his beliefs because of Zuko’s (disguised) Air Nomad tour and lessons
Commander Haoran: the acting captain of crew 2, who for the longest time stumped everyone as to why Zhao assigned him on the Sazanami. Eventually it was revealed that Haoran was extremely incompetent and Zhao hoped he’d hold Zuko back.
Baijiu: the Sazanami’s resident healing spirit! It originated in Taku, then fled after the Fire Nation ransacked the city. It wandered for a while through the years until it attached itself to Koji, drawn in by his unwavering hope for his patients’ recovery. It followed Koji onto the Sazanami, and grew attached to Zuko. So when Koji left, Baijiu stayed behind. Once Zuko became aware of its presence thanks to the Herbalist, Baijiu started gaining a form and received its name from Ume. It has evolved into a spirit capable of wielding something similar to Akari’s gentle flame and uses it to help Zuko’s chronic pain from time to time.
Crew 1 purge survivors
Steward Jingyi, Petty Officer Takehiko, and Chef Xue: refer to crew 1

Tommy x Grace
*Finn comes to Grace asking for help with the bake sale. Grace had never baked before causing suspension among the Shelby women.*

Grace was at a loss. She was grateful this little test wasn’t part of her cover, although Polly and Ada seemed even more suspicious of her background now.
She’d actually heard Ada scoff and openly mock her for not knowing how to bake bread.
Polly had said something along the lines of Graces hands being to soft when she’d come in for her first day to work.
She wasn’t sure if that was a nice observation or a backhanded one.
Tommy had told his family the lie that he had wanted to believe. That she’d been from a good family, gotten herself into trouble and ran away.
She wished that’s why she ruined everything she baked.
It seems to listen to the attention on her and Finn as they reread directions and work over one another. The boy had the attention span of a gnat and seemed to be far less of a help on his own project then he’d expected her to be. She wondered briefly if this is how he performed at school.
She hates to have a group assignment with him.
Eleven year old Finn had approached Grace that evening after her shift and confessed he needed help with an upcoming assignment, bake sale goods, due the next day. She’d initially been touched that he’d asked her, figuring she was being accepted by Tommy’s family. As it turned out, Ada and Polly had wisly turned him down and out.
Grace was the last resort. She’d tried initially to disway the young boy claiming she wasn’t very good at it. Finn had cheerly proclaimed that he’d never done it so they could learn together.
They’d both learned that she was awful at baking as was Finn. He just didn't want to pay attention to the directions.
Grace was relieved now that the crown provided her with a generous daily allowance to eat out or she’d have starved to death if this was any indication of her lack of skills.
Thomas, Arthur and John all filled in ready to put out the fire so the betting shop wasn’t engulfed in flames.
She’d seen their amused expression hidden behind their heads hanging down or their large calloused hands trying, and failing to hide their smiles.
“We’ll at least know Grace has other…uses eh, outside the kitchen.” John and Arthur snickered at his joke. Tommy chuckled and mouthed a silent apology to Grace.
She couldn’t even bake bread. It looked like the adventurous duo had tried to make some kind of roll or pastry.
“The oven was too hot, Grace, that's the problem.” Polly and Ada seemed impressed by Tommy’s spot on observation. He had cooked as a bachelor in the army from time to time.
“You sure that’s the only problem?” Arthur snuck, sending John into a giggle fit. Grace stood up arching her aching back, she had kneaded and rolled out the dough herself. Finn standing over the table “learning.”
“Well, we have things we do poorly Arthur, me with baking apparently, and you with bookkeeping.” She smirked at her own cheap shot at her boss earning chuckling and a proud wink from Tommy.
John really lost it then as Arthur pretended to be offended. His jaw had dropped in mock pain and his large hand covered his heart like she’d wounded him.
Whether or not she knew it, she was becoming like family to some of them.
“Yeah, well this is a woman's work.” Arthur spat back playful nudging her. She smacks him back, giving him a white handprint of his brown suit. Proof of her assault.
Grace shook her head and laughed at herself. She didn’t disagree it was normal woman's work.
“Obviously I’ll keep my barmaid job and not run off to open a bakery.” She announced to the room. Tommy stood behind her and snaked his arms around her stomach burying his face in her golden hair.
“I'd advise financially against opening a bakery, Grace.” He said matter of fact as he kissed her head. She wrapped her flour covered hands over his as she surveyed the massacred mess of baked and burned goods infront of her. She didn’t disagree.
“It would be a foolish investment.” She agreed and he kissed her head as some sort of consolation prize. Now she had to clean it up.
“Come on Finn, we'll take you down to a real bakery and you can buy something for tomorrow.” Arthur slapped the boy on the shoulder as he and John guided their baby brother to the door.
“But we're supposed to make it.” He gently reminded them of the rules.
“Lie then. Like we did.” John smirked at Grace and sauntered out the door. Grace had wanted to ask what bakery would be open at 8 pm but she knew the answer. They were peaky blinder, any bakery that didn’t want to burn down would be open.

Summer 1915 -----------
Eleazar and Theodore sat together on the sofa in the family room, not believing their eyes, while their mother busied herself with her tasks
"Has she sat down at all?"
"For breakfast? She sat down to eat breakfast, right?"
"No, she quickly ate while standing in between cleaning the counter and washing the dishes"
"Is she alright? has she forgotten how to rest?"
"I think she just has a lot of things to do at the moment..."
Both boys didn't realize that their father, who had emerged from his study, had witnessed the entire exchange.
"Finally catching on are you?"
"Dad!"
"Your mother moved in with me one day, started cleaning this house and has yet to stop. On top of raising you lot, doing her fair share at the shop and putting up with me. She sees everything that needs done around here, and gets to it. And while some days her mental list is short, today it seems like it's a rather long one doesn't it? And I'm unfortunately stuck with the unpleasant task of bookkeeping at the moment and unable to assist her."
"Theo, perhaps we should go ask Mum if she needs help, maybe we could tackle some of the things on her list"
"Don't ask her. She'll say no. And it shouldn't be on her either to delegate tasks. Both of you have functional eyes and brains, put them to good use. See what needs done, start your own mental lists, and get to work."
"Yes sir"
The boys rose in unison, and each went in different directions. Satisfied that the boys had understood the assignment, Aesop returned to his own work.
----------
About thirty minutes later, Aesop re-emerged from his study to find a much different sight. His wife sitting at the sofa where his boys were a little bit ago, with a cup of tea in her hands, eyes closed.
Both boys were busy, Eleazar deep cleaning the oven and Theodore cleaning the bathroom.
Aesop sat next to his wife and put his arm around her.
"Hello you"
"I've been relieved of my duties"
"I can see that."
"All done with the books?"
"If I have to look at another spreadsheet I think I'll go mad. Here I thought grading essays was mentally exhausting but I'll gladly read through a pile of second year essays looking for some semblance of intellect over looking for where the missing sickle is"
"I think you're being a little dramatic at the moment"
"I can assure you I'm not"
"Thank you for taking care of it, and for everything else you do for us"
"It's you that deserves all the gratitude my love. Although I will help myself to a sip of your tea if you don't mind"

Get to know your mutuals ❤️❤️
tagged by both @babyscilence and @arliganzey thank u guys <333
What's the origin of your blog title? 'OYA MANDALORE' is a pretty clear explanation of what this blog is- a love of legends mandos and an absolute refusal to let specifically legends mandalorians get overshadowed by disney mandos (it drives me fucking bonkers when i see people saying 'this is the way' when 'oya' would evoke a more apt emotion)
OTP+Ship name: hmmm atin/laseema i think! i don't really have a ship name for them
Favorite color: i love u pine green. u can never go wrong with pine/sage/dark and desaturated green
Favorite game: all time favorite is Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess but i've been playing Fields of Mistria a lot recently
Song stuck in your head: god. lmao. Killers Walk
Weirdest habit/trait: uhmmm idk i really hate being barefoot?? socks in bed, socks basically all the time
Hobbies: mandalorian cosplay is probably my most major hobby but like i write and draw and can knit and crochet and stuff
If you work, what's your profession? accountant/auditor in training and also i work a grocery store bakery job (hopefully by the end of the year i'll be able to get another accounting/bookkeeping job and get out of the grocery store tho)
If you could have any job you wish, what would it be? full time fiction author tbh. heavy on the military scifi
Something you're good at: i can pretty comfortably say i'm good at art and making things, speaking generally
Something you're bad at: musical instruments. i want to be good at it. ive tried. i am just not musical at all beyond singing
Something you love: my dual monitor pc setup <3 hell yeah
Something you could talk about for hours off the cuff: republic commando/legends mandalorians/my beef with disney canon. like don't get me started it's impossible to get me to shut up
Something you hate: ok this one took me a while bc i wanted to pick something that fills me with absolute incandescent rage that i would never defend anything about (without getting political) and while i am a little hater there is good in everything. so here's my one thing that makes me really fucking angry every time i think about it: once i had an rp partner who i knew was sucking ai's dick but i later found out they definitely fed my replies into an ai for 'help replying' and it makes me want to kill
Something you collect: star wars legos i guess but i havent gotten any new ones in a while
Something you forget: shit i still need to pick up my latest med refill. fuck
What's your love language: being willing to make stuff with u <33 headcanons, rp, art collab, food, whatever. my most sincere show of love is mutual creation
Favorite movie/show: movie: knives out and glass onion i think. i really adore a one-off movie with an exquisitely done plot show: andor. you don't get better cinema than that. (DO NOT LET ME DOWN IN APRIL I SWEAR TO GOD)
Favorite food: uhhmmm i don't really have a favorite but i would SMASH a good pulled pork sandwich right now
Favorite animal: teki assigned me coyote so coyotes i guess <3
What were you like as a child: i remember myself as being weirdcringe as hell but tbh all kids have a right to be weirdcringe. i really loved lord of the rings, medieval swords and armor and stuff, and then took a steep dive into star wars pretty young. i had a nerf sword i would carry around everywhere (i still have it actually) and i liked to pretend to be a lotr ranger with my threadbare blanket cloak and trusty steed (bike). i read a lot and didnt have to try to get straight a's in school
Favorite subject at school: despite being an easy straight A student i really liked PE. i was also a little bit of a jock kid (out of pure spite) and lived for the competition aspect it offered
Last Favorite subject: god chemistry was the FUCKING WORST
What's your best character trait? uh.... not to stroke my own ego or be pretentious about this but i like to think that it's an unkillable optimism and belief that there's some amount of good in literally everything? but i'm a huge hater tho.
What's your worst character trait? my self discipline in the face of tedium is dogshit tbh
If you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be? 50,000 american dollars right in my bank account. jk actually it's that i would want my parents to at least not freak out about my immortal soul being in danger/probably consider me untouchable if i told them i don't have a gender and i want to legally do a gay marriage
If you could travel in time, who would you like to meet? a neolithic era person i think

I think I've developed an unhealthy relationship to the idea of ill and well health. I don't remember if I ever actively told myself it, but it was definitely a thought axiom that underpinned a great amount of my behaviors and attitudes about my mental illnesses. "I may be sick in the head, but at least I have my physical health"
I think it's what most contributed to a sense of loss once my physical condition started to worsen, and eventually disable me. I never was one to walk very much or exercise, though my parents say I did play soccer when I was very young. I don't think much of my value ever was seen in my body's ability to function, as opposed to my brain's...Of course some of that loss also comes from average day-to-day things like being unable to walk short distances, stand to long, stand/sit without assistance, the time I lose confined to bed in pain. But it didn't help that I had very much clung to the idea of my body being generally healthy as what was saving me, on top of it all.
I was partially right, too, though. Chronic pain and fatigue definitely makes it harder to manage my mental health. Some days I really just don't have the physical resources to allocate energy into double-bookkeeping or reforming unhealthy thought patterns. I get hypervigilant and more prone to emotional dysregulations when I'm in more pain. And being more attuned to my body certainly does not do me well in regards to tactile & proprioceptive hallucinations... One thing I can say it's improved on is my awareness of when I am dissociated and when I need to ground myself, since dissociation dulls my perception of the pain greatly. So I guess that's cool.
I wonder how much of a moral value I really assigned to the idea of being sick. I know consciously I've always objecred the idea of a physical illness being a moral failing, but one thing becoming disabled has taught me is just how much ableism I actually internalized and never thought about. It's been a bit of work tackling all of those unconscious biases, but I think it makes me a more rounded out person to dwell on these sorts of things.

November 1: A Proper Organizational Breakdown
I've touched on it a bit in the actual story, but here are the actual roles of the Kizuki in i'll crawl through your window:
Muzan Kibutsuji: head of the Kizuki
Kokushibou: Underboss. Focused on day-to-day affairs of the Kizuki, arbitrates disputes, helps assign tasks when Muzan is focused on his Lily hunt. Only answers to Muzan.
Douma: ex-member, formerly a caporegime (in the style of mafia), primarily focused on talent recruitment. Best known for recruiting the Shabanas. Now focuses on providing some income for Muzan via prostitution and intelligence gathering.
Akaza: enforcer. Styles himself as Muzan's attack dog. Handles interrogation now that Gyutaro is no longer a member, but lacks the skill for it.
Hantengu: Capo, also doubles as a master of arms. Has a knack for getting a hold of things that are hard to get, and thus outfits much of the Kizuki. He does, of course, keep the best things for himself. He can't help his wandering hands.
Gyokko: Capo, doubles as bookkeeper. He's a forger by trade, making money for the Kizuki by creating replicas of museum pieces and artwork and including them in auctions.
Gyutaro: former enforcer and interrogator.
Ume: former interrogator and spy.
Enmu: Capo, focused primarily on acquisition. Specializes in kidnapping and requesting audiences.
Rui: Capo, focused on intelligence gathering.

Prompt: Anon requested! Hope you enjoy this; bring a tissue!
Support My Work!
Life as a Clergy member took many roles. Some people were students, and others were assigned to cleaning or cooking. There were those who were bookkeepers, those who had artistic talents to help out with designs, or higher-ranking siblings who worked directly under the head of the church. Then there was Y/n who took on a much more important role within the clergy. She was the resident midwife. The church wasn't filled with just new fresh faces of those who came in weekly but also those who had been here from the start who had fallen in love and expanded their families; it was Y/n's job to help deliver these families their precious bundles of joy. It was a tough job and often took lots of time from her but she enjoyed it to see healthy babies and overjoyed parents.
Today had started out before the sun ever came up. With a knock on her bedroom door; frantic and insistent as another sibling called through the door - not caring if she was waking the others a few doors down with the urgency of her words. When Y/n finally threw open her door with sleepy eyes and a confused face she was met with a sister of Sin practically vibrating.
"I'm sorry to wake you this early Miss Y/n but Rachel's gone into labor! We've delivered her to the birthing wing but she's having really bad contractions and the baby's coming!"
That wiped all the sleep from Y/n body as she gave a quick nod. "I'll be right there!"
She didn't even bother to get dressed out of her nightgown and instead grabbed her medical kit; the rest of her equipment back at her office that she'd need as she slipped her shoes on and followed the sister with quick hurried steps until they got to the midwife's medical wing. It wasn't so much a hospital wing as it was a far more comfortable and homey feel designed personally with the minds of laboring mothers to be more calm and relaxed in. When Y/n entered she caught sight of the mother to be lying in one of the beds with her partner standing beside her with her hand in his as he spoke to her to ease her pain.
The midwife didn't waste a moment as she went to the sink to wash her hands and gather gloves to put on while her assistant hurried to help her ease into the scrubs left there purposefully for these events.
The birthing suite was warm and dimly lit, creating a soothing ambiance, and a diffuser was turned on to deliver the scent of lavender to the air to further the mother's anxiety. Y/n morphed her face with a gentle smile as she approached the bed.
"You're doing great, Rachel. Just breathe and focus. Your baby is on the way." Y/n said softly as she positioned herself by the woman's bent legs to check on her progress.
The mother-to-be; Rachel looked like the determined and exhausted mother-to-be that she was, and clutches her partner's hand tightly as sweat glistened on her forehead, evidence of the physical exertion she was enduring.
After checking to make sure everything was going smoothly Y/n glanced up at the woman and patted her leg softly. "Remember, Rachel, your body is designed for this. You're strong, and your baby is ready to meet you. Let's find a comfortable position for you to labor in okay?" she offered calmly; it was paramount for her to stay calm and collected to ease the progression.
Y/n helped Rachel settle onto a birthing ball, her partner gently massaging her lower back. The room is filled with a palpable sense of anticipation for what is to come but the midwife kept herself cool as a cucumber.
As the hours progressed, Y/n's demeanor shifted between moments of intensity and calm as she expertly guided Rachel through each contraction, providing reassurance and guidance.
When it finally came for the baby to be born Y/n directed her attention to the mother. "Now, Rachel, when the next contraction comes, I want you to focus on your breath. Inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Picture your baby moving down and closer to meeting you."
Rachel nods, her face showing determination despite the exhaustion. She takes a deep breath, visibly centering herself much to Y/n pride; being a mother wasn't something Y/n knew about as she didn't have children herself but working with women as a midwife delivering babies gave her a small taste of what that kind of life could be like and it boosted her sympathy towards these women; carrying children and raising them was a task that required time, effort, compassion, and a whole village at the mother's back.
Y/n monitors the fetal heart rate, ensuring the baby is handling the labor well. The sound of the heartbeat fills the room, adding to the atmosphere of anticipation; adrenaline courses through the midwife staving off the feeling of exhaustion she was undergoing but as hours pass, Y/n unwavering support and expertise become the anchor for Rachel, and her partner amidst the ebb and flow of labor. Y/n's steady hands guide Rachel through position changes, offering massages, and administering pain relief measures when necessary until finally, the moment arrives. Rachel's contractions intensify, and Y/n sees the telltale signs that the baby is descending.
Excited and filled with a new sense of urgency Y/n encourages the laboring siblings once more. "Rachel, it's time to push! You're about to meet your baby!"
Rachel's face lights up with a mix of exhaustion and excitement. With renewed determination, she begins to push with all her might, her partner holding her hand and cheering her on.
Time seems to stand still as Rachel's efforts culminate in what should have been a beautiful, transformative moment. The expectation of the room filling with joyous cries with the baby's first breath of fresh air never came. Y/n noticed when the head of the baby breached that something was wrong; the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck and the baby's skin was a sheen of dark purple. Fearing the worst but not ready to call it quits the midwife went quickly to work helping the infant out.
Everything happened in a rush as the chord was removed, and cut and the baby was taken away to make sure it was alright by the midwife's assistance and Rachel was helped through the last of her progress.
It was nearly noon by the time Y/n exited the birthing quarters. Rachel was sound asleep on some pain meds and her partner went to go get something to eat. The baby was stable but with an unknown amount of time with the chord around its neck it was put under watchful care in the ICU. Y/n was mentally and physically exhausted as she shrugged off her scrubs and washed up robotically before dragging herself into the hallway.
Siblings were already out and about doing chores; Y/n having missed the better part of the day and probably the sermon this morning too by the looks of the crowd that was milling in the hallways. She didn't even care that she was still in her nightgown that she had been wearing beneath her scrubs. She needed some rest and some food but honestly didn't feel like doing that.
"Y/n!" a voice called through the crowd and the woman turned with slowness to see Papa's ghouls heading towards her. "We missed you at the sermon!" Cirrus chirped when they got closer but one look at the sibling made her smile falter a bit.
"What's the matter, honey? Are you feeling alright?" Mountain asked concerned as the Earth ghoul sidled up to them along with the rest of the pack.
"Yeah, I'm okay. I just got out of a 12 hours labor room," she replied softly as she rubbed a hand down her face. "The baby's in the ICU right now." she added solemnly.
"Oh no...is it okay?" Sunshine asked wide-eyed.
"He'll be alright. He just had his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck for a bit but he's stable and doing okay. He's just under watch for a day or two just to make sure he doesn't have any brain damage or anything." the midwife replied.
"Oh..."
She forced a small smile on her face though as she waved them off. "It's okay. Don't stress. I'll be heading to my room for some sleep though so I'll catch you later okay?"
"Oh no! You look half dead on your feet. Come here. We're going to take care of you, okay?" Sunshine wrapped an arm around the woman's shoulders and Y/n couldn't find the strength to protest as she rested her head on the other's shoulder with a tired sigh.
"I'll go make you something to eat, Sunshine will help you get a bath going, and Cirrus can go grab you something to change into, okay? Then we can sit down and watch a movie or something." Cumulus said as she took charge and waved off the males.
"We'll catch up with you guys later okay?" she and the other ghoulette's whisked the tired nurse away and down to the ghoul's wing of the Abbey where it was private and quiet.
"You guys don't have to do this. I'll be fine really." Y/n protested without much conviction and Sunshine snorted knocking her head gently against the other with affection.
"You look ready to drop, love. You just delivered a baby Y/n. Let us take care of you for once okay?" she coaxed.
Y/n wanted to fight; stubborn and headstrong not wanting others to worry but the ghoulettes were the closest thing Y/n had to best friends and she honestly was too tired to put up much of a fight so she allowed them to lead her wherever they pleased. As promised, Cumulus headed straight for the kitchen to make Y/n something warm to eat while Sunshine led her to one of their bathrooms and began running her a bath; putting relaxing bubble baths in the hot water and helping her undress so that she could soak for a bit.
The water felt nice against her tired muscles and Y/n sighed resting her head against the porcelain edge. "I swear it's days like this that make me rethink my line of work." she mumbled.
Sunshine laughed a bit and began running a loofa over her skin. "Don't say that. You do good for the Clergy in your line of work and I know in the morning you'll think better on this. The baby is okay and you did great just as always to help bring a little bundle of sunshine to a new family." the ghoulette soothed
"I just...we all just wish that you'd take better care of yourself in times like these you know?"
Y/n chuckled slightly and turned her head to meet the other's brilliant orbs. "That's why I count on you guys." she joked and Sunshine gave a playful dab to her face with a soapy loofa.
Just then Cirrus entered with a pile of clothes. Setting it down on the counter she came to kneel by the tub and rest her hand on Y/n's updrawn knee giving her a warm smile.
"Feeling better?" she asked.
"I feel like I can sleep in this tub to be honest." Y/n smiled wearily.
"That's not an option; you'll drown yourself if you aren't careful. Come on, let's get you dried off and dressed. Cumulus has a feast for you and we have a movie playing in my room." the air ghoulette encouraged helping the woman from the tub and wrapping a towel around her.
With the girl's help Y/n dried off and dressed in an array of clothing from each of the girls. A pair of fuzzy sweatpants from Sunsine's closet, a T-shirt from Cirrus', and a warm hoodie and socks from Cumulus. Once she was dressed and the girls brushed her hair and braided it they left the bathroom in favor of going to Cirrus' room where Cumulus was already changed out of her uniform and in some comfortable clothing of her own as she kept the bed warm for the trio.
An array of food on two different trays sat in front of her. An entree of chicken nuggets, some bowls filled with fruits, pretzels, and some bags of different chips and candies on another with drinks set on the nightstand. Seeing Y/n Cumulus opened her arms invitingly and the woman sank into the bed; curling herself up against the ghoulette's curves as Cirrus and Sunshine took their positions around her.
The TV was paused waiting to play the beginning of a movie and the girls snacked on the food laid out for them while they hit play on the TV. The room was filled with quiet munches and the voices on the TV. Nobody actually talked about Y/n's tiring day and only really spoke unless it was the commentary on the movie they were watching.
It had been such a long time since Y/n had a girl's day to relax and she knew she would have plenty more days that tested her strength such as today. But until then, Y/n was content to be surrounded by her friends. When the trays where cleared and set aside they lounged against the bed; warmth spreading through her from their body heat and she smiled slightly as she cuddled back into Sunshine's embrace who spooned her from behind. Seeming to sense her lack of focus the multi-ghoul gently stroked her hair and face soothingly.
"Go to sleep if you want to. We'll be here when you wake up." she promised.
"N-no I'm okay." Y/n prosted weakly but her eyes were droopy and ached from how tired she was.
Cirrus chuckled from beside Cumulus and reached over to drape her arms around the girls as she let out a little chitter sound. "Don't fight it ladybug. You need your sleep."
"Are you sure?" Y/n mumbled tipping her head up to look at them.
"Positive. Don't worry, just close your eyes; we're right here and won't leave your side." Cumulus purred; the vibration helped lull Y/n further into sleep despite her wanting to fight it.
The last thing the midwife felt before drifting off to sleep was the warmth of the bodies of her friends surrounding her, a soft kiss placed on the crown of her head, and a featherlight stroking along her face as the ghoulettes helped ease her mind and allow sleep to take her under.

Probably better off a personal post, but I figured you'd get a kick out of this:
I want to believe the Founding Families of TVD's past have some intricate stories since they leave behind mysteries that we only see solved in in the 21st century. And I like to make some hidden history:
In TVD 3x17, we learn that Meredith Fell had Samantha Gilbert's journal via her grandmother. Typically we assume they (Founding Families) just took her belongings after her death or at least the Gilbert Family would've. But instead, it was a Fell (whom I called "Marjorie Ann Fell") who had it - or rather, she inherited the diary from her mother ("Margaret Ruth Fell"), Meredith's great-grandmother.
Here's what I think happened: Samantha and Margaret were in love in 1912. Samantha worked as a bookkeeper and Margaret worked as a nurse at an asylum - though her family didn't initially approve. While she worked in the daytime, Samantha was an avid vampire hunter at night and used her family heirloom, The Gilbert Ring, to come back to life. However, when the ring took a toll on her psyche after reviving many times - creating an alter ego and killing members of the council - Samantha kept a diary of her spiral & worried she'd hurt the woman she loved. Her nightmare eventually came to head 10 years later in 1922 when she nearly killed Margaret. Full of remorse, she told her about what she was going through, which helped piece together that she was the killer. Margaret convinced Samantha to reveal the truth about the ring to the council, which was how she ended up in the asylum Margaret worked at and even got assigned as her nurse. Samantha struggled from the negative side effects of the ring with Margaret by her side until one day it became too much. She has a breakdown and cried in tears, professing her love and making her promise to keep her diary safe should anything happen to her. Tearfully understanding Samantha was at her limits, she professed her love back and took her diary. That night, Samantha took the knitting needles used during the day and killed herself via forced lobotomy and died of blood loss. Margaret, as her nurse, was questioned but ultimately quit due to losing the love of her life at 36. Another 10 years later in 1932, she had her daughter, Marjorie Ann (Meredith's grandmother) at 46. She died in the 1960 and left Samantha's diary to her in hopes that if the Gilbert Rings - that was given to Samantha's next of kin despite her disapproval - ever caused the same problems that cost Samantha her life, a Fell would ensure it got to the right person to prevent it from happening again...
As it did in 2010 with Alaric Saltzman.
Now, wouldn't this romance be in Samantha's diary? I would think that, but in typical forbidden romance fashion, I believe Margaret tore out any pages implying their love. Perhaps there would be a time when people like her and Samantha would be accepted, but in the time period they lived, the risk of anyone knowing was too great.
(Heads up, in Legacies S1, the Necromancer summoned a witch to get him the knife he needed. I dated her outfit - she was very likely from the 1910s and I wouldn't be surprised if she manipulated Samantha to kill Zachariah Salvatore. He was probably related to or covered up her death and used Samantha as revenge. Yeah, that's what I'm going with!)
So, what do you think?
Honestly I don't have super strong opinions on this, but I like the idea of Meredith's grandmother being in love with a Gilbert. The way you describe their story is so compelling and giving star crossed lovers. Reminds me of Stelena. I love a good forbidden romance.

(I thought tumblr had finally changed it so you can ask shit from a side blog. Arrrrrgh did I imagine it? Well this is fanfoolishness yet again regretting this being my goddamn main 😅)
Morganite - 45, 54
Tourmaline - 28, 35, 42
Jean - 22, 31
Thank youuu! Yeah ahah tumblr defo let you send in asks from side blogs before because I'm pretty sure I saw you celebrating this in a post once.
WEIRDLY SPECIFIC BUT HELPFUL CHARACTER BUILDING QUESTIONS
_
I'm once again gonna provide a visual for all these OCs ahah. I think I'm gonna have to do that from now on out, it's fun and probably helpful to people reading 'em.
Morganite- (I am forever obsessed with this shit-eating grin sketch I did of her)
45- What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
I answered this one for Morganite on another ask, but I'm gonna give another, because she just has so much hate and disdain stored up in that gemstone, ahah-
I have a silly OC headcanon that half-Gem Jean Maverick ends up introducing the game of billiards to Gemkind at Little Homeschool. Well, a modified version of the game that's about scoring points for the most mathematically "sick AF" shots eventually ends up spreading like wildfire across the galaxy proper, and plenty of Morganite's lackeys are sucked into it, playing it constantly. Thus, she really, really fucking hates billiards. It's constantly distracting her troops from their duties. Yet another way that damned hybrid keeps thwarting her plans.
54- What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
Oh, absolutely fight.
With the circumstances she's lived through (a viscous war, a life partner defecting to join rebels, one's diamond being shattered and having to be re-assigned and rebuild one's reputation under a new leader-) she's easily paranoid, and always wide alert. You really do NOT want to sneak up on her, or spring anything unexpected.
_
Tourmaline- (rebel Tourmaline is soooo my scrunklie)
28- What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want?
Courtier era Tourmaline tells people that she wants to be seen as the most intelligent, knowledgeable Gem in the room. Tourmalines are like... the bookkeepers, the ones who actually WRITE the history- at their Diamonds' behest, of course- and so it is their duty to be in the Know about everything happening around them at all times.
In reality though, all Tourmaline really wants is to make people laugh. To enjoy lasting conversation. To make an impression. For so, so many years, other Gems only saw her as like... a tool, a means to access knowledge, just a living repository for facts, but she wants people to gravitate to her because of who she IS, not what she can give.
35- What is the smallest morally questionable choice they’ve made?
The SMALLEST morally questionable choice? Well... hmm. I mean, she was a strategist in a war, so there were plenty of BIG morally questionable choices... but small?
Hmm.
The reason why these memes are so fun is that sometimes they inspire me to pull shit right out of my ass on the spot. Anyways, one day Tourmaline was sharpening her sword in Bismuth's forge at her permission and accidentally like, broke one of her tools.
She never fessed up to it, and eventually one of Bismuth's weapon smith apprentices gets blamed for it instead.
42- If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?
Hmm...
"Rejuvenated, But By Choice This Time: How To De-program Yourself From Gem Society In Ten Easy Steps"
It's a comedy TED Talk about her own experience in defecting from Homeworld and joining the Crystal Gems that also ends up tackling some Real and Raw topics lol. Probably a talk you'd see given as part of some evening programing at Little Homeschool.
_
Jean Maverick- (I still eternally love this lovely art my friend @cynthi-arts did for me of them)
22- What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character?
Eating food freely without having to scrounge over the nutrition labels to look at ingredients. Like damn, how do these people live?
The reason why is that Jean has a gluten intolerance- it's not... entirely so bad that it's a full-out allergy, but life is simply easier if they go to the effort of avoiding it as much as they can. This is a big reason why they always envied Gems growing up, in how they don't need to eat or drink or sleep to remain operational- just access to light.
Jean really wishes they weren't saddled down with this half-human bit a lot, suffice it to say. Surely everything would be sooo much easier if they were just a Gem. (So they believe.)
31- When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?
In the wake of drastic events that come far later, Jean ends up saddled with guilt in how they handled their first encounter with Morganite. They feel that Little Homeworld and Beach City wouldn't have come under such fire if they had acted more decisively that day- poofed her, perhaps, instead of simply cornering her to be ultimately led off in the custody of Homeworld reform officers.
Their way of dealing with all this stress and the needless what-ifs is by completely wearing themself to the bone around the clock in the manhunt for Morganite after her vicious attack on Little Homeworld/Beach City. Jean simply cannot rest until this loose end is tied up completely, and they will absolutely face negative bodily repercussions due to this.
#jen rambles#ask meme#ocs#morganite#tourmaline#jean maverick#these were so fun thank you!!#esp loved generating more thoughts about tourmaline a aaaa#i feel like i'm finally getting a sense for the kind of person she is
