if someone with a generic letterNUMBERS username and default square picks a fight (being a rightwinter) in your replies, just block and report them. If you see them in someone else's post picking fights in the replies, block and report them. They're bots. Don't fight with bots, just block them.

Removing an app is easy, but it turns out actually deleting your Facebook account is unreasonably difficult.
youtube
I went through a lot of outdated videos Friday before I found this, not sure how long it’ll be relevant before they change it again.
No Amazon. No Walmart. No Target. No Disney. No Google. No Apple. No Visa or Mastercard. And especially no Facebook. I will not be posting on Meta platforms for the next 24 hours in support of the economic blackout.

Yesterday [April 30, 2024], a bipartisan collection of US Senators introduced the Fans First Act, which would help address flaws in the current live event ticketing system by increasing transparency in ticket sales, and protecting consumers from fake or dramatically overpriced tickets.
Today, the artists and Congressmen allege, buying a ticket to a concert or sporting event requires negotiating a minefield of predatory practices, such as speculative ticket buying and the use of automated programs to buy large numbers of tickets for resale at inflated prices.
The legislation would ban such practices, and include provisions for guaranteed refunds in the event of a cancellation.
The political campaign organizers, calling themselves “Fix the Tix” write that included among the supporters of the legislation is a coalition of live event industry organizations and professionals, who have formed to advocate on behalf of concertgoers.
This includes a steering committee led by Eventbrite [Note: lol, I'm assuming Eventbrite just signed on to undermine Ticketmaster and for PR purposes] and the National Independent Value Association that’s supported by dozens of artistic unions, independent ticket sellers, and of course, over 250 artists and bands, including Billie Eilish, Dave Matthews, Cyndi Lauper, Lorde, Sia, Train, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, and hundreds more which you can read here.
“Buying a ticket to see your favorite artist or team is out of reach for too many Americans,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).
“Bots, hidden fees, and predatory practices are hurting consumers whether they want to catch a home game, an up-and-coming artist, or a major headliner like Taylor Swift or Bad Bunny. From ensuring fans get refunds for canceled shows to banning speculative ticket sales, this bipartisan legislation will improve the ticketing experience.”
Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Roger Wicker (R-MS), John Cornyn (R-TX) and Peter Welch (D-VT) also signed on to the Fan First Act.
In the House, parallel legislation was just passed through committee 45-0.
[Note: That's a really good sign. That kind of bipartisan support is basically unheard of these days, and rare even before that. This is strong enough that it's half the reason I'm posting this article - normally I wait until bills are passed, but this plus parallel legislation with such bipartisan cosponsors in the senate makes me think there's a very real chance this will pass and become law by the end of 2024.]
“We would like to thank our colleagues, both on and off committee, for their collaboration. This bipartisan achievement is the result of months and years of hard work by Members on both sides of the aisle,” said the chairs and subchairs of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.
“Our committee will continue to lead the way on this effort as we further our work to bring this solution to the House floor.”
“The relationship between artist and fan, which forms the backbone of the entire music industry, is severed,” the artists write. “When predatory resellers scoop up face value tickets in order to resell them at inflated prices on secondary markets, artists lose the ability to connect with their fans who can’t afford to attend.”

Not at all fandom related (at least not directly) but is somewhat under the guise of Tumblr Culture, so thought i'd ask here. Plus, sample sizes.
Am I weird for being, like...completely unbothered by bot followers?
I definitely delete bot asks/messages/replies/comments, but if I see a bot following me, I just ignore it. Obviously I don't follow back, but I don't block either, but it seems like bot followers are Enemy #1 in my circles -- like that one poll going around rn that's like "why did you block the last person you blocked" where bot is sweeping by a very wide margin!
Now, to be fair, I have completely different behavior from most people LMFAO and rarely check/acknowledge new followers in general. In my notifications I'm mostly looking for comments in reblogs/tags, replies, asks, etc. I...rarely follow new people back and I do often judge a user by their URL, it pains me to say. By which I mean, the URL...If It's from a fandom I'm in or if it's particularly punny I'll lurk on them and see if I want to follow them back, but if their URL is something generic or something I don't "get" I don't often check :( And like, i'm not stupid -- I know that ashley12345 who has either a blank profile pic or a stock image and her posts are all about SEXY CHAT HERE is a bot! But her following me means nothing to me because She Is Not Real. Sadly, she is not an ACTUAL milf in my area who wants to fuck me :( But I'm not, like *bothered* -- bots following me is nothing more than a stupid inflated number, and as someone who does not care about their follower count (i average about 2k followers and that is big to some and small to others and means nothing to me), a small percentage of fake followers just doesn't matter and I genuinely see no difference between a "fake" bot follow and a "genuine" inactive account follow.
--
Leaving them there can contribute to them looking like a real account to whatever automated detection tumblr might have, but I don't really care about them either. I never notice them unless they post spam since I don't keep track of my followers.

i'm looking forward to getting the blocked/deleted follower count purge update for the same reason it's probably going to take a while to reach me, since they're doing it in tiers according to follower count and just rolled it out for people with 1500. i know for a FACT i do not have seventeen thousand two hundred real flesh-and-blood human beings following me right now and i'm eager to see how hard that number dips once it's my turn for the update. i know i pick up a lot of followers in a day, and i know a lot of those really are real people because the urls are just not standard bot material, but i know the number is nonetheless inflated by bots and whatnot, and it'll be a relief to have that disparity revealed and resolved. i'm sure it may even drop by a quadruple-digit number, but i would much much rather have an accurate number over a huge number!!

How to report robo comments on Content Farm videos and raise the alarm to Youtube
Tumblr media
If you've been helping me track down stolen OCs, you'll find in a lot of cases these videos have comments from random people with numbers afterward that are leaving generic comments about the videos
Tumblr media
This is against youtube's terms of service and can possibly lead to a channel being terminated for participating in this
That being said, you should be reporting these comments anytime you see them on a content farm video. The more robo comments being sent to a single content farm, the more likely you are to lead to its termination
Here is is how to report robo comments [or fake engagement] on Youtube
Tumblr media
As you can see, when we visit one of the above channels in that comment chain. It is empty and was only made recently. A clear sign of a robo channel
Click the more button and then click "Report User"
Tumblr media
2. Click "Spam and Scams" which is what fake engagement falls under
Tumblr media
3. Click ahead until you get to "Additional Notes" then add context akin to the the following message:
This account exists to leave positive comments on videos in order to artificially inflate view count and interaction in order to game the algorithm and make the videos more popular than they actually are.
4. Click submit and you have filed a claim
Tumblr media
I don't expect us to be able to stop the bots, what I DO want to do is have mass-reports flood into youtube linking these accounts to the bots so they can receive warnings, suspensions, and hopefully terminations.
What I do is usually tab open a few of these robo account then report them one by one.
If copyright fails, we can always turn to reporting the other shady methods Content Farms use to scam the algorithm and get them off of youtube
Fight the good fight!

Went browsing for paid beta readers on my old stomping grounds, Fiverr, and ugh, man I hate that website. And Upwork. All of them.
There’s something about a monetary incentive on a platform that pushes the lowest bidder hard, called “Fiverr” for a reason, that can churn out the laziest work? Not that I think beta reading should be done for free, but “beta reading” is, in my experience, not very widely understood, so a lot of lazy people or full-blown scammers think they can take this soft, unregulated skill, and make bank doing the absolute bare minimum. Whereas if you do it for free, you gotta be doing it for the passion.
And I have been scammed plenty, especially during the beta process for Eternal Night where I was reporting gigs left and right for false advertising, even the most popular ones that rampantly abused AI to do their work, but an inexperienced author would never notice.
I’d absolutely love to throw money at the people who do quality beta reading, and I have, and it absolutely lessens the anxiety of “you said you’d do this for me where’s my work” if we have an actual contract of “I have now paid you money, you have to follow through on your commitment.”
Beta reading is just one of those incredibly nebulous areas where the expectations of both author and beta reader can have such vast interpretations that there needs to be a dedicated platform, like Reedsy, that only hosts freelancers for writing, that is invite only like AO3 to lessen the chance of scammers, and demands more from freelancers to vet their skills than a basic English comprehension test, because understanding English is not an understanding of fictional prose.
It would take a ton of work having actual people involved and not chat bots and ~algorithms~ but a site where I can say “I have a WIP with X genre, N wordcount, and Y rating and I’d like a beta reader to provide B style and C level of feedback with a focus on D narrative structure” and have betas who are happy to take on a project written in a style they both understand and would enjoy reading.
A system where you can leave reviews but there’s no stressful “ranking” system, and where you can delete bad faith reviews with some disclaimer of “there was something here but it has been removed by vendor” so at least you have the chance to ask “hey, what’s behind that redacted box?” because as a beta myself on Fiverr, I have also been harassed by pissed off authors who thought they shit gold.
A magical platform made by authors, for authors, where you can cancel an order without blowing up your entire gig. Heck, where you can have cover artists and illustrators also there for your one-stop-shop for the whole book, cover-to-cover. A platform where you can silence your 'gig' for a while if you're not using it so you're not clogging up the real estate for more active sellers without risking your standing. A platform where you must be able to approve an order as something you want to work before an order is just dumped hot and steaming on your doorstep that you must work or else risk your rating.
I had a friend who ghostwrote for some weirdo who insisted on including all these foot fetish details in a completely unrelated and “YA” work and wouldn’t admit it, but to cancel on them would be to lower their very precarious standing on Fiverr. Cancellations are a death knell. The pressure to leave better reviews than people deserve lest you get harassed by the seller/buyer is also very real.
Reedsy is great and all, but Reedsy takes a hefty cut and it’s for bigger projects that cost hundreds to thousands of dollars for full-blown edits. 10% inflated cost for Reedsy's cut (don't remember the actual number, hypothetical) gets really expensive when it's 10% of $3800.
Beta reading is not “easy”. It demands more than a “it was good” (and sometimes I have to ask after the fact “did you even like it” which should be very clear up front) and authors have different expectations of the level of work involved, even among the same WIP as it goes through different stages, but so much of it involves telling yourself “this might not be the book for me, but it could be the book for someone so I am going to read it with an open mind” that I also did not get from a few sellers.
Idk maybe even a Discord server (I've tried communities on here, not a fan of the UI) for now that at least gets authors who need betas and betas who need authors in the same location. Fuck it, I'll even run it. I've got free time. You want something done, you do it yourself.
Anyway thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
