Joko Anwar really outdid himself with Nightmares and Daydreams that son of a gun! Ok admittedly have only seen eps 1 and 6 because my horny ass always prioritizes Ario Bayu and Fachri Albar first and foremost but damn those are WILD. Cant believe all of the eps are on Netflix available for everyone to see. We’ve gone a long way since Halfworlds 🥲

Sri Asih is the second movie in Bumilangit Cinematic Universe and I'm happy that this superheroes universe of Tanah Air finally started to take root.

The timeline is slightly before Gundala takes place I think, because near the end of the movie they did explain about Sri Asih's appearance in Gundala.

Our main character, Alana (Pevita Pearce) is an orphan after her parents died during her birth -- she was born at the same time when Merapi Mount errupted, how badass is that. Since little, Alana already had this sense of justice but at the same time anger issues as well. She was being adopted by a lady who ran a gym and boxing ring, and Alana grew up became a ring fighter herself. Everything went well for Alana, aside from her anger issues, until one day a rich tug called Mateo looking for trouble with her and everything went downhill from there. Alana is told that she is actually Dewi Asih's incarnation and she must stop the evil from destroying the world.

As usual, the fighting choreo is great despite the story itself feels dull in some places. Sri Asih definitely can use some jokes to lighten up the mood and not to let the plot feels flat.

Reza Rahardian as Jatmiko is as usual giving his best performance. The twist regarding his character is also interesting despite being pretty easy to guess.

And I definitely love Awang's appearance again! He's now Godam and I'm looking forward to his movie with Tira.

«Гундала: Сын молнии» — это попытка индонезийцев создать собственную франшизу о супергероях! То, что начинается как многообещающее, быстро превращается в посредственность. В остальном амбициозный проект разочаровывает из-за некачественного сценария и кинематографических настроек персонажей.

Основанный на индонезийском персонаже из комиксов, «Гундала» является ст��пенькой к предполагаемой собственной кинематографической вселенной.

Bumilangit Cinematic Universe (BCU), как они это называют. Довольно дальновидное начинание, которому, я думаю, могла бы последовать любая способная киноиндустрия по всему миру. Судя по тому, что я до сих пор понял, она недостаточно компетентна для поддержания таких стимулов в долгосрочной перспективе. Несмотря на ограниченность ресурсов, история остро нуждалась в доработке по краям. Сценарий казался рыхлым и растрепанным из-за промежуточных переходов. Технически это сносно, особенно звуковой дизайн, являющийся фокусом! И я должен признать, насколько подходящими были все дети-актеры. Если я абсолютно честен; они выступили лучше, чем их взрослые коллеги. В заключение, в нем было немало приятных моментов и несколько приятных боевых сцен. Но из-за отсутствия законного надзора эти потасовки быстро приобрели монотонный характер. Последние минуты проложили путь к мыслимому продолжению. Я просто надеюсь, что они исправят указанные ошибки и в следующий раз придумают лучшую историю и персонажей.

Jujur, gue tumbuh bukan sebagai penggemar komik Indonesia. Tumbuh di era 2000-an mungkin menjadi salah satu penyebabnya, dimana komik Jepang sedang berjaya bahkan tontonan anak-anak di masa gue tumbuh kebanyakan adalah kartun Jepang. Gue sendiri mengoleksi beberapa komik Jepang, seperti Doraemon, Naruto, Eyeshield 21, Hai Miiko!, Detective Conan dan beberapa majalah komik. Tapi, gue juga cukup mengenal komik-komik Eropa, seperti Tintin, Smurf,  Asterix, Lucky Luke,Agen polisi 212, dan lain-lain. Pengenalan komik-komik Eropa dilakukan oleh orang tua gue yang memang mengoleksi komik-komik tersebut.  Jadi, mendengar nama Gundala, Si Buta dari Gua Hantu, Godam sebenarnya tidak terlalu asing, tetapi memang tidak sepenuhnya mengetahui tokoh-tokoh itu, yang berasal dari komik Indonesia. 

Lalu, saat gue si pencinta tokoh-tokoh Marvel, lebih tepatnya MCU, yang hanya baru membaca beberapa komik Marvel ini mengetahui bahwa akan ada film superhero yang nantinya juga akan berkembang membentuk universe layaknya MCU yang dinamakan Bumilangit Cinematic Universe, gue sangat antusias mendengarnya. Bahkan, setelah menonton Gundala, gue menjadi berkeinginan untuk dapat membaca komik-komik Indonesia untuk dapat mengenali karakter-karakter yang ada di dalam universe tersebut, yang jumlahnya gue rasa juga sebanyak yang dimiliki Marvel tapi ini rasa Indonesia. 

Gue sebagai warga negara yang berusaha menjadi lebih baik setiap harinya melihat hal ini sebagai sesuatu yang layak untuk didukung dan dibanggakan pastinya. Menurut gue, fim Gundala karya Joko Anwar ini sudah cukup baik secara keseluruhan, dengan biaya yang memang jauh lebih kecil dibandingkan film Marvel atau DC, dan segala kekurangan yang masih bisa diperbaiki dan ditingkatkan di film-film BCU mendatang. Gundala yang merupakan jagoan yang berasal dan tumbuh di Indonesia patut ditonton oleh kita sebagai bentuk dukungan dalam memajukan industri kreatif Indonesia, selain itu cerita Gundala yang disuguhkan memang cukup dekat dengan keadaan Indonesia sampai saat ini, seperti penguasa negara yang masih berkuasa dengan alibi membela rakyat, lalu tentang keadaan keluarga-keluarga di sebagian besar masyarakat Indonesia, bagaimana perjuangan masing-masing individu dan pengaruh keluarga yang dapat membentuk karakter seorang individu. Beberapa pelajaran yang diberikan di film ini juga dibalut komedi dengan dialog-dialog yang cukup kocak yang juga mengingatkan gue sama film-film MCU yang cukup banyak menyelipkan dialog komedi. Jadi, gue yakin bahwa BCU bisa menjadi sebesar MCU tapi dengan rasa Indonesia nantinya.

Ya masa menyisihkan uang dan waktu untuk menonton Captain America dan rekan-rekan saja bisa, sedangkan menyisihkannya untuk jagoan dari tanah air tidak bisa? malu sama kucing yha. Kedepannya, gue berharap BCU ini benar-benar bisa berjalan dan suatu saat pingin banget bilang “gile keren banget pas scene abimana vs nicsap, kayak ngeliat chris evans vs sebastian stan di winter soldier, ugh!” :p

Self-integrity

Although Indonesia might not be any better when it comes to its own relationship with colonial powers, but I get the impression that when compared to the Philippines it has more cultural self-integrity. In the sense that even when a number of its cartoonists work for US publications, the fact that it manages to have a major publishing house specialising in superheroes says a lot about what the Philippines could've done for long. The Philippines did something like Bayan Knights, but it didn't last long.

Not to mention it's more common for Filipinos to work for US publishers, so our constant relationship with the United States undermines our ability to be culturally self-sufficient or even reliant on other Asian countries beyond food products and the like. So I believe that a close relationship with the US has done more harm than good, especially when it comes to supporting local products and industries that might explain why Bayan Knights never lasted that long on its own.

Compare this to Indonesia's Bumilangit where it has thrived for years, going so far to get its own cinematic universe. Bumilangit is also built on the backbone of earlier superhero publications, where all the Bumilangit characters come from. That speaks volumes about Indonesia having more faith in its own industries, brands and superheroes in a way the Philippines could have, but due to the persistence of colonial mentality we ended up undermining and sabotaging our attempts at true independence.

Given my distaste for Philippine-US relations, it's far more harmful to our ability to take pride in ourselves culturally than good really.

so! i read the tiger burning bright previews and since Alex is in Jakarta there i've decided, as an indonesian, to analyze it for kicks

for context i am not a jakarta kid by any means so i can't tell you much about the supernatural vibes of the city much (most superstitious folks are usually village elders tbh) but i do live in the greater jakarta area so i know just enough hhh

language nerd time! a kutukan does mean 'curse'. apparently you guys call it a sumpa? that's a one letter difference from the malay/indonesian word sumpah, which ALSO means 'curse' (though for us it's a verb)—in indonesian, sumpah is means 'curse', as in the synonym for 'swear'. in malay, sumpahan (the noun derived from sumpah) means an actual 'curse'. that's my language trivia of the day 😂 we love lingual similarities

i haven't heard of an everflame in our folklore so perhaps it's a made-up thing in the story, but what i do know is that the Banaspati are a race of fiery ghosts/spirits originating from Java. that's geographically accurate at least, since Jakarta is on Java island. the Banaspati can appear either in a humanoid form, a ball of fire, or a fire tornado. sort of like Santelmo's cousin. they terrorize and attack locals just for the fun of it, or to suck their blood. in addition to being made of fire they're also vampires lmao

the Banaspati can be enslaved too, usually to put a curse on someone. there are three types of Banaspati:

Banaspati Geni (fire): Banaspati who draws power from air/wind. they feed off human fear to increase their power and suck enough oxygen to create huge fires.

Banaspati Tanah Liat (earth): these usually hang out in forests and jump on humans to suck their blood. they can't touch someone with direct contact to the earth, so if you wanna be immune to Banaspati tanah liat you gotta walk barefoot

Banaspati Air (water): will target people in bodies of water. suck their blood first then leave them to drown

i can't be sure which one Farah (the Banaspati shown here) is, but probably Banaspati Geni.

Ahools are Javanese bat-like cryptids, described as having a 12-feet wingspan, a body the size of a toddler, the head of a monkey and the face of a human. they reside in caves on mountainous rainforests and are nocturnal

dunno why these ahools would like to kidnap humans, since they eat fish, but Farah's right, they aren't soul eaters.

okay ITC might be labelled a mall, but it's more of a department store if you ask me. it's all retail, and different floors have different services. staples are fashion stores, jewellers, a salon maybe, gadget sellers and gadget repair shops, and there's always a food court with food stalls scattered around. we do have actual malls though, ITC is a popular chain of department stores throughout the country. i love this depiction in Trese, it looks just like the one in my city. they really are all just cookie cutter 😂😂

side note, pencuri means 'thief'. wonder why he's called that

perhaps they just mispelled it, but i'm gonna assume 'Gwendala' is Gundala, a superhero character in the Bumilangit superhero comic universe. Bumilangit is a local comic book company most known for introducing the first superhero characters in the Indonesian comic industry, and they've produced movies based on their comics as well in a series called the BCU (Bumilangit Cinematic Universe). if you ask me they're trying too hard to imitate Marvel and DC and they should stop

anyway Gundala is this guy (left is the comics version, right is the live-action movie version):

scientist who gained powers to control lightning and also superspeed. arguably the most famous local superhero comic character.

I thought with how Gundala and Sri Asih are being presented, Bumilangit Cinematic Universe will keep the dark/grayish theme but Virgo and The Sparklings is obviously a fresh addition to the universe. Especially since all of the main characters are still in high school -- I'm kinda worried about Leo though. He looks order and if he would be dating Riani, that's a red flag I don't wanna touch 😅

The story is pretty lighthearted, evolve around these high school girls and their daily life like parents, school, bullying, hobby, love stories. And even though the goal of the main villain, Carmine, here is to make sure all kids kill their parents -- which is pretty dark -- they managed to make it lighter for younger people consumption.

It definitely doesn't have the similar, or even close, movie aesthetic luke Gundala or Sri Asih since the director and team are different, I quite enjoy this one. The kind of no brainer and refreshing movie to be watched in your free time when you want to unwind.

One question though, there is Cempaka's appearance in the movie but I don't remember her anywhere in the previous franchise? Or did I miss something?
