i see way way way more posts yelling about how wrong it is to tell middle aged women that they’re too old for fandom or tumblr than I see people saying anything of the sort to middle aged women. Like I’m 36 and I’ve never had anyone tell me I’m too old to be here 🤷🏽‍♂️

On May 27, 2022, Top Gun: Maverick was released exclusively into theaters. Almost overnight, it became a cultural phenomenon with a fandom of individuals from all over the globe who loved the movie and its characters.

One of the fantastic things about the TG and TGM fandom is the diverse and innovative creators who have used these movies as inspiration for their art. Whether that be in the form of writing, fanart, GIFs, moodboards, edits, etc, we have all taken the same 4 hours and 1 minute of film to create unbelievably varied and original content. And that is what this challenge is about.

What is the "It's not the prompt. It's the creator." challenge?

The idea behind the "It's not the prompt. It's the creator." challenge is to show that even though we might all use similar tropes or AUs, or create GIFs of the same scenes, or use the same moodboard themes, it is our own personal creativity, innovation, and preferences that make our work unique.

So unlike other challenges, everyone will be using the exact same prompt. That's it. One prompt. And an unlimited amount of participants.

And yes, there will probably be art that is similar (either the tropes, themes, characters, etc), however the point is to show that even when two creators have similar independent ideas, their final creation is unique because they put their own original spin on it that only they could do.

What is the prompt?

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Top Gun: Maverick being released, the prompt is:

"Last summer was one no one could ever forget. Now, a year later, character(s) still feel(s) the effects of that time."

Be as creative as you want and feel free to use any characters from Top Gun (1986) and/or Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Also, while the prompt says a year has passed, there is no set time your art has to be set. It can be pre-canon, post-canon, during-canon, and AU setting, etc. Whatever inspires you!

What is allowed?

Whatever you want. It can be SFW, NSFW, slash, reader insert, OC, no relationship, poly, AU, fluff, smut, angst, whump, etc.

You can also use whatever your preferred medium is to fill the prompt. Writing, artworks, GIF sets, edits, moodboards, playlists, Pinterest boards, etc. Or think out of the box and build a scene out of Legos, make a stop-motion video, draw a flipbook. Whatever inspires you and your creativity! If you created it, it counts.

And there are no minimums or maximums limits for words, time, number of GIFs, etc. Just however much or little you want to share, even if it is still a WIP.

There are only three requirements:

TAG YOUR WORK APPROPRIATELY so others can filter out what they might not be comfortable with. Each post will be checked before being reblogged, however, mistakes can be made so please tag them correctly.

You must be 18+ to participate. Due to the freedom of the event and the fact NSFW content is allowed, only those 18 or older may participate. And if your blog does not have any age indicated on it (18+, 20s, over 21, 35, etc.), your post will not be reblogged. I am very sorry to any minors hoping to participate at this time.

No AI resources can be used as part of a submission. While AI can create cool works of art, they aren't your works of art. As that is the point of this challenge, it will not be permitted.

When does the event take place?

The event will start on Saturday, May 27 and run until Saturday, June 4. However, if you can't finish in time and post after that, this blog will try its best to still reblog your work whenever you feel ready to post.

My path. (dad!Ego)

Synopsis: You tell your father you don't want to follow your his dream anymore.

"Dad? Can we talk?" You've knocked at your father's office three times by now, but he still hasn't responded. "Dad? Helloooo?"

After not receiving a response once more, you decide to just enter the room. This has happened a few times already, so it's nothing new to you. Ego tends to get lost in his work and doesn't hear you knocking or calling for him. Usually, Anri would hear you and open the door, but she's not in there at the moment.

And that's good. There's something you want to talk to your father all alone.

Ego only notices you when you sit down on the chair next to him. It's specifically there for you to sit down whenever you want to spend time with your father.

"Oh? I didn't hear you coming in."

"You didn't hear me knocking four times either..." You mumble in a rather sad voice.

Ego turns off his computer screens to look at you. "What brings you here?" He can already guess there's something important you want to tell him, considering the way your voice just sounded.

"There's something I've been thinking about a lot lately and..." You start but quickly stop again to take a deep breath. You already know your father won't react well to this.

"...And you want to talk to me about it?" He asks and turns his chair a little in your direction to look at you better. "Go on, tell me what's going on in your head."

For a moment, you collect as much strength as you can before saying what's been plaguing your mind for days, or even weeks, at this point. "Well, uhm. I've thought about... You know, returning to my old soccer club."

Ego stares back at you in disbelief. "And why would you want that?"

It's already obvious that he's completely against your idea, but at least he's trying to hear you out on the reasoning.

You take another deep breath before responding. "I just... I don't really know. Blue Lock doesn't feel like the place where I belong."

It's a bit hard to figure out what exactly your father is feeling right now because neither his facial expression nor his voice gives away any specific indicator. But you can figure out a concerned undertone. "No no, don't say something like that. Blue Lock is the perfect place for you. It's the best way to achieve your dream."

"About that..." You laugh nervously, now getting even more worried about how your father will react to what you're going to tell him next. "I... I don't think I-"

The way Ego looks at you makes it hard to tell him. You'd trust your father with everything, but when it comes to soccer he's very sensitive and things can turn into arguments easily. It's happened over small things in the past, so you can only imagine how it will turn out now.

You can't bear to keep looking at your father while saying it, so you turn your gaze down to the floor.

"...I don't want to be the world's best striker. Not anymore."

There it is. The truth is out.

"Repeat that. And look at me when you say it."

"Dad I-"

"Repeat it right now."

Even though Ego tends to be a bit strict sometimes and you've had arguments in the past, not once in your life have you been afraid of your father or worried about his reaction to anything. But his tone has never been as strict as it is right now. It's almost threatening.

"Dad, I..." You look back up at him, but instead of repeating what you said you break out into tears. "I'm sorry, I just... I don't feel like this is what I'm meant for."

Ego sees the tears running down your face, but he doesn't say anything about them. Instead, his voice only gets stricter with the concerned undertone from before completely disappearing. "I spent all these years training and preparing you for your future. I even let you join Blue Lock, just for you to ask to go back to your old club?"

In any other situation, seeing you cry would have made Ego calm down immediately so he could comfort you. But this is about soccer, your future, and your dream. It's nothing he's currently willing to calm down about.

"Dad, please let me e-"

"I wasn't done talking!" The sudden rise in Ego's voice startles you, but he ignores that and continues talking without care. You've genuinely never seen your father as careless as this regarding your feelings ever before.

"I'm not letting you give up on this. You've dreamed of becoming the world's best striker since you were little and you've been getting closer and closer to achieving that. Why do you want to let go of all your potential and just quit?"

Ego's last sentence confuses you. "I'm not asking to quit soccer, I'm just asking to return to my old club."

"In my eyes, that's the same thing."

"But I-"

"You are not leaving Blue Lock. Understood?" A frustrated sigh can be heard from your father as he puts his head into his hands. "What in the world even led you to that conclusion? What makes you want to quit on your dream?"

By now, you somewhat stopped crying. Tears are still about to roll down your cheeks at any second, but you're trying your best to keep them in. "I don't think I have what it takes to be the world's best."

Ego's eyes widen at your response. He genuinely seems shocked to hear something like that from you. "Why would you think that? You have the potential. You can become the world's best."

"...Stop lying to me, dad."

"What?" He's even more shocked about that response. Not only because you're accusing him of lying, but also because he's not used to you talking back to him.

"You're lying to me. You don't genuinely believe I could be the world's best."

At this point, Ego's frustration is turning into anger. "Don't talk to me like that!"

"But I'm right!"

"Oh, and what makes you think you're so right about this?"

"If you always only wanted me to be the world's best, why create Blue Lock in the first place? Why make 300 strikers go against each other? Why make me compete against them when it's so obvious that it's gonna be one of them someday?! Why give 300 others the chance to become the best striker but at the same time you're telling me that I'll be the best!"

"No, you don't understand. You know the circumstances in Blue Lck have always been necessary for-"

"You're just saying that to find some sort of justification. Just admit it. You gave all of them the same chance as me because you don't believe I'll make it."

"Don't interrupt your father like that! When did you become so disrespectful?!" Ego raises his voice even louder than before.

"And when did you stop caring about my feelings?!" You talk back once more.

Ego takes a deep breath in an attempt to calm himself. He hates letting his anger out on you, even if you're the cause of it.

"(Y/N), please listen to me." His voice is a lot calmer now, but it's still tense. "I genuinely believe you could be the world's best striker one day. But there are others who have the same potential, so you need to compete against them do push and challenge yourself."

"And what if I don't want that anymore? What if I just want to go back to the soccer I used to play with my old team? I still have chances of going pro there. I was already playing in higher leagues before this entire Blue Lock thing started..."

As much as you're trying to explain your standpoint, Ego still doesn't seem to understand you. Maybe because he doesn't want to. "But why would you want to go that way? You have chances of joining the national team if you keep doing well in the Neo Egoist League."

"It's not what I want."

"It's what you've always wanted."

"It's not what I want anymore!"

"Are you just having another one of those stubborn phases?!"

"...Whatever." You let out a short sigh before getting up from your chair.

You're about to turn away so you can leave the room, but then Ego gets up as well and grabs your arm. "You're not just leaving like this."

"And why? We're not getting anywhere with this, no matter what I try."

"You can't just leave in the middle of a conversation like this. Have some more respect for your father."

"Have some more respect for your child's feelings..." You mumble under your breath, but it's just loud enough for Ego to hear.

He's about to scold you, but he's aware how that would only result in more arguing and yelling at each other. So instead, he decides to take a calmer approach.

"Alright. Sit back down and tell me about your feelings." He doesn't sound as genuine as he usually would, but you decide it's better than nothing and sit back down in your chair. Shortly after, Ego sits back down as well.

You're trying to stay calm and want to avoid raising your voice again. It's hard because you're still hurt, but you hope to finally get your father to understand you about this.

"I don't feel like Blue Lock is the place where I'm meant to be. I don't feel like the national team is where I'm meant to end up. I want to go pro, yes. But... not like this. Not as big as this."

Ego sighs and tries to stay as calm as you, but he still doesn't see where you're coming from. "I still don't understand how you would come to such a conclusion in the first place. It's what you've always dreamed of since you were a child. Why would you throw away your childhood dream when you're so close to reaching it?"

"Because I've realized..." You take a short pause to think, looking down at the floor again. It's hard to keep eye contact in moments like these. "I don't really know, to be honest. I've just felt so out of place among all the others ever since the Neo Egoist League started."

Ego nods and needs a bit to figure out what to answer. But his response still isn't what you'd like to hear from him at the moment. "If you ask me, I believe this is just a phase. You're not used to the Neo Egoist League yet, so take some more time before you make final decisions."

"I really don't feel comfortable staying in it anymore, dad."

As much as he's tried to stay calm, this is where Ego is starting to lose his temper again. Well, at least he's not raising his voice again - just the undertone gets rather aggressive. "And what do you want me to do now? Just let you drop out of Blue Lock and leave what you've been working for behind? You seriously want me to let you return to that soccer club that never challenged you as much as you needed?"

"...Yeah?"

Ego shakes his head in frustration. "I would never let that happen. (Y/N), I'm your father. It's my job to guide you and I have to continue guiding you this way even if you don't want to. I know what's best for you. And what's currently the best for you is to not give up on your dream."

"It's not my dream, dad. It's yours."

"Ours."

You manage to make eye contact again. "Yours."

"(Y/N), come on-"

"I'm old enough to decide these things on my own."

"You're not."

"What?" You look at your father in disbelief.

He's always pushed you to do things on your own because he knows how strong you are. But suddenly, he seems to have changed his mind on this.

"You might currently think this is a good idea, but when you get older you're going to regret it. Come on, stay on your current path."

"If I regret it, then it's my own fault. And besides, I can still go pro and I'd even have the chance to join the national team if I really wanted to, even if I returned to my old team. Don't you remember I already had great chances before?"

"It's not the path you're going to go." By now, it seems as if Ego is understanding where you're coming from, but he's not willing to back down. All his arguments seem to consist of 'You have to go the path I chose for you' despite that not even being what you want.

"...I'm sick of going the path you're laying out for me when it's my career." And with this, you get up from your chair again, but not turning away to leave just yet. Not before you've said your last thoughts. "When it comes to literally everything else, you let me decide on my own. Just when it comes to soccer you need full control. And I... I don't want that. I feel uncomfortable and you literally don't care about that because all you want is for me to follow your dream that you've raised me with. Why did you raise me to be egotistical with soccer, only to not let me be egotistical when I ask to go my own path now?"

Your words feel like a knife stabbed right into Ego's heart. He knows you're right. He doesn't respond anymore and just watches you walk away.

But he knows there's a lot he should reconsider now.

And there's definitely something he needs to fix and change about himself.

What EDS treatments are effective?

you all responded really well to a previous medical education post I did, so I wanted to try something new: a series on research papers!

today I’m looking at “Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: An Analysis of the Current Treatment Options”(2019) by Song et al

tldr:

when researchers (well, doctors) looked at the medical records of 98 patients with EDS of any subtype, from their physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) clinic, to find out which medications improved, did nothing to, and worsened symptoms, they found:

- complimentary and alternative medicine and opioids were most common for patients to try, with NSAIDS, physical therapy, and bracing/splinting close behind.

- the following improved symptoms in at least 60% of patients: massage, bracing/splints/orthotics, ibuprofen, a nerve block, platelet-rich plasma, prolotherapy, taking a combo of hydrocodone and acetaminophen, steroid injections, oral steroids, baclofen and botox.

- physical therapy improved symptoms in 43% of patients and heat in 58%.

- surgery, going to a chiropractor, acetaminophen alone, and drugs for nerve pain (ie duloxetine, gabapentin, tri-cyclic antidepressants) tended to have low efficacy (less than 30% of patients had an improvement in symptoms).

Note that there may have been a bit of bias in terms of who participated in the study, that it’s not certain how reliable the medical records are, and that there’s a bit of ambiguity in the results because they included multiple subtypes of EDS.

I chose this paper for a couple reasons: its open access, easy to read, and has very clearly reported and well defined results. it also has very simple statistics (which is great, because thats my least favorite part). 

the introduction provides some good background information on EDS, although a few things are of note. One is that they refer to a phenomenon called pain sensitization or central pain in paragraph three, which they don’t go into too much detail on. This topic is a candidate for another post in this series, since it’s surprisingly little known. in short, this has to do with the body adapting to being constantly in pain, and as a result, an abnormal pain response develops (3). I don’t want to go into it too much here, but if this part was confusing to you, that’s what it’s referring to. 

additionally, they mention the so-called three stages of hEDS, which I traced back to this paper (4). While this researcher has a lot of publications in heds, I find it hard to believe that a sample size of only 21 (very different!) patients is enough to firmly define three stages that all patients go through. Plus, their ages are never reported, and “stiffness” is defined as just “not hypermobile anymore”. IMO, not very strong evidence.

Looking at the methods, most of it is as I said above. This type of paper is a retrospective review, meaning they looked at data that already existed, did analysis on it, and drew conclusions on it. Reviews in general can be really useful when you’re first starting out on a specific topic, and I recommend people start there. 

Another thing about methods is they used a Mann-Whitney U test, which, fair warning statistics isn’t my strong point, but I’ll do my best. For more resources, look here and here (5) (sidenote, this whole college-level statistics textbook is open access and very practical, and the author is clearly very passionate about teaching.). For the purposes of this paper, just note that the P value in the last column of their results table indicates significance, ie whether the data they got was any better than random chance. Significance in research is usually defined as a P value less than 0.05. The lower the P value, the more likely the results weren’t just random chance. Any P value over 0.05 is generally considered just random chance. 

That’s really important for interpreting these really beautiful results tables. Make sure you pay attention to the little “Significant? Y/N” column. If there’s an N, there’s not enough evidence to prove anything about that treatment one way or another.

Note that when you’re interpreting the results, just because it didn’t work for most people in this study doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. I really like diclofenac gel for joint pain, but only 24% of these participants had the same experience, and that result had a P value of <0.0001!

There’s not much to say about what the authors wrote as their interpretation of the results, which I think was sound. 

Regarding limitations of the study, I think there’s a few. Overall, my opinion is that the paper is decently strong evidence of how effective certain treatments are, especially when combined with other, more specific papers. But for limitations, the sample size is a bit small, but for EDS, pretty good. 

There’s the issue of almost all participants being women, but that’s a product of EDS affecting female people more strongly than male people (1). To be specific, both afab and amab people have an equal chance of inheriting EDS, because although the exact gene hasn’t been discovered, the way it’s inherited has been (an autosomal dominant gene) (1). It’s possible that sociological factors are at play, but the author’s conclusion (and my own) is that it’s likely one of many biological factors that makes EDS worse in female people than male people(1). I’m using female/male instead of afab/amab because anecdotally, some ftm trans people with eds have found their symptoms improved with testosterone (which one person in this treatment efficacy study also found).

This study also mixed all the subtypes together, with only 76 of the 98 participants having diagnosed heds. 2 had other subtypes (ceds and cveds), and 20 were unspecified EDS. That muddies the results a bit, because although the subtypes have some things in common, they can also be pretty distinct. For that reason, I would’ve liked to know what happened when they separated by subtype and ran their significance tests, but it’s not the biggest deal to me that they didn’t.

Then there’s the issue of the sample itself, which was taken from a PMR clinic. Who goes to a PMR clinic? people who live within a reasonable distance and have the money to both get the referral and pay for the specialist. Additionally, people may be hesitant to tell their joint doc about EVERY treatment they tried, and that doc may not have written everything down. Plus, this study only includes those diagnosed with eds (which again requires money), and therefore may not represent EVERYONE with eds, diagnosed or not. In research, these things can be really difficult to control for, and in my opinion, there’s not much the researchers could’ve done to fix this without massively changing the study. 

Additionally, all these medical records would’ve been made by the same few doctors at this clinic, who may have had biases or writing quirks that impacted the data. Plus, the doctors who wrote the paper also probably wrote some of those medical records. That’s not unusual, but definitely not ideal.

I did notice cannabis was missing from the list of treatments (although cbd was not), likely reflecting it’s illegality and controversy. patients don’t want to tell their doctors that they did illegal drugs, and researchers don’t want to publish about illegal drugs either. Still, it’s worth pointing out that cannabis has promising efficacy for eds pain (2).

In conclusion, I do really like this paper, and I think it’s a great intro to both research and EDS treatments. From here, there’s plenty of more specific papers about specific treatments, and its a great way to get started.

Decemberween ’23 — Dweebovision

We live in an age of external participation in games. Watching people play games is so long-lasting a practice that I literally cannot imagine a place it started. Even the earliest games have examples of people caring about the outcomes of games they weren’t playing, one way or another. The immense video firehose that is the internet and its significantly lowered cost to engage is a way we can take formerly niche games and present them to their audiences.

David Webb is Very Good at Scrabble and word games. In the ecosystem of British Television, he is a serial prize winner, showing up on various TV shows, and winning you know, teapots and houses, and whatever else British TV gives people as rewards for winning on their particular kind of game shows. If you don’t want to watch for reruns of 90s TV shows to see Mr Webb at work, though, you can tune into his Youtube channel, and watch how every few days, he presents a new Scrabble match against high-level players, with extremely detailed, clear step-by-step thinking of him trying to win the game aggressively and how he does it.

If you’re used to videogame Lets Players, or streamers, you may be used to a lot more trash talk than Webb’s going to give you. He opens things with the same phrase (Scrabble, my opponent/I am on the play, let’s go), and then it’s just thoughtful, slow, methodical play of Scrabble. It’s with an online tool, which handles things like automatically checking terms; you can’t play invalid terms, and the game shows you the points return of a play, or the remaining tiles in the bag. There’s a lot of information and no real ability to bluff (more on that later). And Webb wins a lot of the time, but he also loses often too — when you’re playing against the best, in a game where outcomes can be influenced by random chance, what other options do you have?

What I find the most fun, and often I skip to, is when Webb finishes a match, he gives his seemingly-habitual analysis of the game (huge, huge, win for (me or my opponent)), then pulls up a move analyser. This involves replaying the game step by step, and he reasons through his choices, even honestly indicating where he gave up points and whether or not he thinks that’s a good idea. In this section there’s a shocked sound effect he plays any time he misses a bingo, where he realises there was a way to score a huge pile of points and didn’t get it. And he does! This is a guy who’s very good at Scrabble, he’s in the top rarified levels of this game and wins money playing it, when that’s an option, but he still misses seven letter, eight letter, and nine letter words.

Reassuringly, he also mentions how yeah, he’s really good at Scrabble, but the game is too hard for a human to play perfectly. It’s a very gentle attitude.

One of the funniest things on this very sedate, very British channel focusing on language puzzle games, is that Webb has expressed a concern that his audience, his fans, are made up of two separate streams of interests, and they don’t overlap much. See, in addition to playing Scrabble against other high-level Scrabble players on the internet, he also does a weekly solve of the Times Cryptic Crossword.

And like, I know it’s funny to me, but it’s also kind of true. I watch him solving the Cryptic Crossword and find myself getting angrier and angrier at the Cryptic Crossword. That’s meant to be solvable? That’s a thing a person is meant to tease out of understanding? How! How was that even vaguely tenable as an explanation of the term budgerigar?

It’s still good for learning how cryptic crosswords are made up of technical language, that you have to become familiar with to play. It’s not just a matter of looking at a puzzle and seeing what words fit, you have to learn how those clues are trying to justify being a clue for the word they are, and how little they want you to imagine that word.

5 OUTRAGEOUS nonwords that stayed on a Scrabble board

This is a focus on online play, though. Face to face Scrabble (and other, non-dictionary-checking) Scrabble games involves an extra layer of strategy that involves not just playing words but lying about them. The rules in tournaments run that it’s the job of the opponent to monitor the board to ensure your word are valid. You play a word, and your opponent can challenge it, and if they challenge it, and the challenge is valid, the tiles leave the board and you lose the points. But if they challenge it and the challenge is invalid, they lose a turn. This is to keep people from just challenging too much.

Problem is this means that there’s an actual strategic element to choosing when to bluff, and when to lie, and that’s where this kind of gameplay comes up. I’m sure this feels unpleasant to a certain type of player; the idea that playing your opponent in a game that otherwise feels very asocial and technical is, no doubt, concerning!

I think I talk about Scrabble a fair amount. It’s a really interesting game because while its core principles are pretty stable, its pieces are really dynamic. For example, the scrabble dictionary used to reject a lot of alternate spellings of words. It also used to permit slurs. Now, it includes neopronouns and has opted to exclude words that are predominantly only meaningful as slurs. The pieces change, the core game stays, and top level play isn’t about understanding words as much as it is seeing words in terms of their relationships. There’s anticipation of potential pieces, there’s an awareness of a huge arsenal of possible terms, and there’s even room for bluffing in a game that ostensibly is about the most basic form of technical challenge.

I'm curious what you think about Pirate101 - specifically, if you think there's a distinction between "young pirate" and "young wizard".

In both games the protag is referred to as "young" by lots of characters, but in Pirate this was already old enough to be (infamously) arrested for brawling/smuggling/treason/dueling/hoodoo, as well as lead their own crew. Personally that feels like an indication that being called "young" doesn't make them a kid, or at the very least it feels very older teenager/young adult-ish. In a similar vein, I feel like the wizard wouldn't be elementary school age or anything (although no matter how old they are they're still under-equipped to be saving the world but that's not really the point).

I hope I don't offend you, and you're free to headcanon what you like of course, since they will never have a canon age so to speak. But personally given that context I just can't see the wizard protagonist being as young as everybody says that makes what they're being put through so much worse.

So first thing's first my first answer will disappoint you because I don't play Pirate101 and so I know fuck all about it HALANDIEKE I get the general gist of the tutorial (i played through that) and everything but I could not tell you anything about what I think about how the YP interacts with people or how they feel or what the general vibe is because I dont know that. As for the ambiguous age of the wizard yeah it can be confusing. Because since the game is primarily designed to have the protagonist be You instead of any set character there's no consistency as to what the canon age of the wizard is. It really just all depends on what you WANT the Wizard's age to be; whether that's your age when you started, your current age, a separate age for a separate OC, etc. Like you said other than the prefix "Young" we really have no idea just how "young" young really is

So yeah I've heard that the Pirate is arrested for crimes and is in jail, and you're right it's hard to imagine someone like 5-11 being in jail for organized resistance of the Armada. And like, in my opinion, that's only because a little child would most unlikely have that intelligence or be cognizant enough to do things like that. So yeah a teen or young adult would work better in my opinion

But like here's the thing, and this is my personal opinion - I don't consider P101 and W101 protagonists to be parallels. Like just because the P101 protagonist may be in the adolescent stage doesn't mean the W101 protag couldn't be any younger, or older.

Especially since there's a difference between the canon protags already. While the Pirate was canonically organizing and participating in the resistance by themselves or with a skilled team, the Wizard was just all of a sudden poofed there. The Pirate has prior training and homeland advantage. The Wizard does not.

I don't really like comparing traumatic experiences between people personally (even though these charas are fictional) but I feel like. Subjecting someone to a war when they've had war experiences vs. someone who has never been in a war before/has no idea how to practice magic is a HUUUGE difference. Not like the former isn't bad by itself but yeah. The Wizard came from Earth, INVOLUNTARILY, and without their permission is thrust immediately into a bad and dangerous situation with no prior experience, training, or preparation. It seems like the Pirate, to me, chose willingly to fight in the Resistance and knows how to defend themselves. There is a huge difference there

And whether or not you headcanon the Wizard to be a child or not I do half agree with you that subjecting such a young person, OR ANYBODY for that matter, into a situation as dangerous as war is a terrible thing to do I get it. But, and this may be unpopular, I'd have a bit more sympathy and alarm for someone who was forced/pressured into it, someone who was unprepared, rather than someone who was already used to it, training for it, organizing plans for it.

So yeah regardless of age, there's a huge difference between both canon protags of both games. I personally feel what the Wizard has to deal with is much worse. Their only "support" system to start out with is a complete stranger who (in post-update) gives them no choice, decides their fate FOR them, and expects them to HURRY UP about it. The Pirate AT LEAST has a crew and other people who literally care about them and back then up and fight WITH them. The Wizard starts out with no one by their side.

So yeah that's just my personal opinion. And this isn't to like bash anyone on the head who thinks any different or has a different story than canon at all 💖💖💖 this is just how I feel. BUT THANK YOU FOR THE ASK IT WAS A VERY COOL ONE TO ANSWER!!!!

Hi, I'm doing a drama piece soon set in the 1980s wherein my character is a college aged lesbian who plays a lot of sports. Was wondering if you had any good ideas for costuming as there's a short bit where they talk about the character and saying that it's clear from her clothing that she's a lesbian (in a good way as she's trying to aks another girl out). I was thinking of maybe getting some vintage pins if I can find some but wasn't really sure what else just screams 1980s sporty lesbian. Now I’m Australian so I just wanted to clarify that because I’m sure there are slight differences in experiences aha. But I went through some of my books and I found some photos of clothing and letters and feminist ideas from around the 1980s and the 1970s (I figure if she is in college in the 80s she would be have been old enough in the 70s to be potentially be shaped by what happened there). Just to give you an idea of the atmosphere!

Also , there is an Australian gay male movie called Holding The Man , obviously it’ll be a bit different since it’s about gay men and set in Australia, BUT, it is based on a true story and goes through the different time periods of these men, some of which also include the grater lgbt community. In high school one of the boys is also very into sports so it might be interesting to watch for that perspective as well. Honestly as soon as I got this ask the sports scenes from that movie where the first thing that popped into my head aha. (Just a heads up though the movie has a sad ending and deals with triggering content such as the aids crisis , homophobia and hate crimes ). It is one of my all time favourite movies though.

Also! With some of the things I’m about to post the working might be a funny. I’m not saying one way or the other about it I’m just showing it to highlight some of the ideas around that time! :)

So from what I can see a strong feminist scene was around this time in the community and ideas around what made a lesbian - (I’d recommend looking up the Lesbian Sex Wars - it delves more into the sociopolitical side of it) and I know politics becomes a bigger thing when you are at that college age. In saying that that absolutely not all lesbians would have participated in that or been involved with those types of movements or beliefs. I could be totally wrong (so take this with a grain of salt lol) but from what I have read it would seem the most “flagging” was done either in very feminist/political based spaces OR in the bar scene spaces. That’s where you would typically get lesbians wearing certain things or using certain terms to indicate their camps or political beliefs and or sexual positions and beliefs. So if you have someone who doesn’t partake in that and is just more of a lesbian in sexuality alone and not how she expresses her sexuality, you might find more women not doing those things. So I guess how much you want to include in that aspect solely depends on the type of character you want !

I can’t name any off the top of my head but maybe I good place to start would also be to read lesbian fiction that was written during the 80s - that way you might get more of an authentic look at how things in the community operated! Because I am by no means an expert on any of this stuff.

In saying that it’s also fiction!! So just have fun and write about women making out aha.

I'm not American and I've never lived there so I don't know much about the USA Independence Day but I do feel like it was a significant, conscious choice to have that be Reaping Day because Reaping Day is a twisted version of the essence of Independence Day. Independence Day anywhere symbolises hope and freedom, the day a country achieves independence is the start of a bright future. Reaping Day is a twisted version of those things. There is hope on Reaping Day but it's the hope that some other child is sent to die in the games and not you/your sibling or child. For the career districts, there's a hope you get to volunteer and go for the games. Not being chosen on Reaping Day is a temporary freedom because you're safe, but only for 1 year or you've finally outgrown the games and are free from that. Again this is a freedom based on someone other child being chosen to fight and die in the games long enough for you to age out and be free from it. Even then this freedom is temporary if you have children or your friends/siblings have children and you go back to hoping some other child is chosen so the one you care about is safe. Finally, the first Reaping Day doesn't represent the beginning of a bright future, it represents the beginning of a cruel society. I think Suzanne Collins chose July 4th for Reaping Day to twist and make evil the essence and core ideas associated with independence day in our world.

I don't think the 74th Hunger Games was rigged to put Katniss in. At this point, Katniss has done nothing to be noticed by the Capitol. Yes, she hunted in the woods but Gale did and he wasn't chosen and nothing happened to anyone else beforehand that would indicate the Capitol actually cared that Katniss was in the woods hunting. She was hunting from 11 to 16, that's 5 years when something could/should have happened to Katniss, they very well could have thrown her in when she was 12/13 so she'd be too weak to win since no one that young ever wins.

If the reaping could be rigged. Who do you think participate in this collaboration? I don't think there is anyone outside of the Victors in the districts that the Capitol would care about, but if they want to rig the reaping, Capitol people, the peacekeepers and MAYBE the mayor would be involved. The peacekeepers likely are the ones identifying who they want to put in the games through this rigging. I'm not sure who fills the paper slips but I think it's Capitol people and they could easily just make sure all had the name of whoever they want in the games. Finally, the Mayor may be involved if making all the slips or identification is done by the district, not the Capitol.

Youth, Y-O-U-T-H—is defined as the chapter of someone’s life in the teenage state by the Cambridge Dictionary. Youth can be characterized as transitioning from childhood reliance to adult independence. Notwithstanding prejudice to other classifications adopted by Member States, the United Nations defines 'youth' as people aged 15 to 24 years.

With this compact definition, youth can be seamlessly grasped.

But who the youth are? Who are the youth of today? Who are they in Generation of History? Are they relevant?

While venturing with this argument, the definition becomes enigmatic. Things can be complicated, and as a result, this notion starts to be puzzling. This baffling article opens an avenue to the radical world of youth.

As the dimension of generation shifts to the contemporary age, the young adults become the prominent role of this age. Youth can be depicted as a radical age group. They start to voice and stand firm to their contention and outlook, debating the tradition and suggesting a novel conviction. The long existence of myths began to be debunked, and a vast progressive movement that sought to find the truth commenced. The youth’s ability to assimilate and adapt to society's transition becomes their strength. At that, they’re passionate about learning and act upon it to arrive at their goals.

In addition, youths today tend to prioritize their careers over romantic attachment. They become career-centered. Some become their family's hope, while others are prohibited, or worse, they’re tired of it because of the setting in their home. This is rooted in various factors, such as the environment where they belong. The setting is one of the crucial indicators of the quality of one's life. It could improve or impair one’s outlook. Platonic relationships, on the other hand, become more significant to the youths. As they explore, they become outgoing and build connections and valuable relationships. The friendship bond becomes their backrest in the taxing voyage of life.

The new torchbearers rise in the taxing, bloody, turmoil, and hopeless society. Yet, they are the so-called “hope” for the dying and rotten system of the exploitative world. From the famous and cliché notes of the Philippine Nation's National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal quoted “Kabataan Ang Pag-asa ng Bayan,” leaving significant responsibilities and duties to the youth. With this, youth tend to be the prodigies, agents, and backbone of nation-building. Filipinos have held this promising fidelity over the decades, but it was all a false hope.

Did Rizal lie to the Filipino nation? Definitely, no. It was a crystal-clear reflection of the governance and society. The youth got robbed as the prodigy by its society.

Moving along, youth is viewed as the ‘future’ in a discrete industry. Most say they are rising leaders, innovators, science specialists, and promising entrepreneurs. They are expected to be legatees of business, science, and innovation legacy. Youths are also regarded as ‘cultural curators’ or acting agents to conserve and enrich the culture. They are given this valuable privilege to care for and safeguard the cultural heritages. Beyond the shadow of a doubt, youths are the backbone of a nation and distinct industries. This optimistic latitude gives youths a menace to document their marvelous brilliance. Lamentably, there is a lack of opportunities and awareness for the youth. A margin of educated youths is unemployed, unable to participate in the nation’s growth. Poverty, defective quality of education, and injustice in the employment system are the culprits.

The world expects too much from them. Yet, the world has little. How could the world do that?

Youth is becoming a depressed fragment of society. Unemployment, poor governance, and inequality are some challenges that the world poses to be resolved by them—many expectations from an insufficient system. The world pushes away the legatees of the future to a cliff of desperation and hopelessness.

Despite the drawbacks, the Gospel acts as a moral compass, redirecting the youth from the temptation of desperation and the edge of hopelessness, leading to the virtue of fortitude, courage, charity, humility, and kindness. The Christian Faith empowers the youth, sheds the light of love and service, and serves as a sturdy foundation for the concept of Sequela Christi.

During the pandemic, the flame of passion to serve and spread kindness and love to the neighbors markedly enlivened the hearts of young adults. The simple yet charitable act of the ‘community pantry’ symbolized the gestures of kindness and love. In times of downpour, the youth chose and are still choosing to stand to be the voice of the underprivileged. By any means, they try to reach out and give a helping hand. Youths become the hope of the service of good.

Yet, who are they hope?

Walking to the ‘narrow road’ is tiring but rewarding concurrently. This ‘narrow road’ leads to the path of discipleship. Following Christ became the youth’s hope. His guidance leads them to the fulfillment of grasping their identity and purpose in life.

Prodigy. Legatees. Curator. How magnificent to be called with this title is an honor to be. After the overlong venture of the youth’s identity, it only led to a realization. The given tags exist only to be nothing but a false hope. It resembles the ‘Crown of Thorns,’ a tormenting prestige. Yet, youth still choose to stand firm wearing the thorns of tags. The flame of their identity becomes hope to prevail over the narrow road. Holding the Christian Faith, values, and virtues as a moral compass empowers the youth to apprise a novel narrative.
