After the Sunshoot campaign and for some reason Wei Wuxian is in Cloud Recess and Lan Qiren discovers that they don’t have a core. But the lan clan had a technique to fix a lost core for others that had been attacked by others that could melt their core. @nikkiwhitecraft

I was the requester for #1.

I am sure that part of the story that Wei Wuxian and Lan Q had to travel, and that was when it was discovered that Wei Wuxian had no core, and Lan Q was annoyed he never said anything and the Lan Clan had a technique to restore a core that was lost/melted as the core melting clan was known.

3. Hi! I’m searching for a fiction on AO3 where Wei Wuxian is a Rogue cultivator, he founds Lan Wangji floating in a river/lake and saves him. Wangji don’t remember anything due to the trauma he has suffered and his core is damaged altogether. He had a severe injury on his back but when he recovers he starts to travel with Wei Wuxian, not knowing his brother is searching for him. Because of his poor health issues he breakdown with a fever in the middle of a hunt, far from everything, during this time Lan Wangji loses consciousness, Wei Ying is visited by a strange fox spirit, really creepy whom he made a pact with to save Lan Wangji life's. In the history, Wei Ying has an uncle that reach both of them to advise something, Lan Wangji discorver to be a really powerfull fox spirit, i think they call him Huxia or something like this, Wei Ying "dies" by the venom of a fierce corpse (most like become one of them) and is ressurected by the Jade Emperor himself, the Demon subdue palace is actually a palace and Wangji's mother was the previous Huxia.

I’m going crazy cuz I remember ALL the history, but not the name of the fiction.

4. Hi, could you please help me find a wangxian fic? I apologize for the inconvenience, especially because i don’t remember much of the plot except select few parts of it and i dont remember if it was a thread on twitter or on ao3.

The scenes i do remember are as followed: Prior to this scene, wangxian might have had an argument or were avoiding each other because i dont think they had spoken to each other in a while. The scene i remember is WWX going to JYL’s place where everyone is gathered for a get together, wwx dotes over JL, going on about how he’s the favorite uncle. When he enters the living room, he sees LWJ on the couch, and sitting next to him is JZX half brother MXY talking to him. He thinks they are sitting a little too close and he gets a bit jealous but doesn’t say anything. I’m not sure if I remember it right, but i think people or mainly nhs kept saying how MXY resembles WWX, worsening the situation. Wangxian and their whole eye contact happens and everyone in the room is tense because of their interaction or lack their of. WWX suddenly goes to the bathroom, leaning into the sink…waiting and LWJ follows him in. They end up reconciling.

Thats all I remember, I know its not much, and i have been struggling as well because of it going through my bookmarks on ao3 and twitter. I’m hoping someone remembers this part as well and can mention the fic. Thank you!

It’s the fic about WWX entering JYL’s party at her place and finding LWJ sitting on a couch with MXY. The scene is towards the very end so MXY’s presence is more of a cameo, he wasn’t present for the fic. WX might have a fwb situation that went wrong or it might be a lwj fucks fic. Lwj follows wwx to the br, its tense as wwx stares at him through the mirror but they both make up

But there was a scene where wrh manages to get wq married to lwj as a second wife, and wwx felt like he failed the Jiang-Lan alliance. And there was a big confrontation between wq and wwx, where she tells him the reason for the marriage was to save her family. And lwj might have been ill or cursed and wearing a mask (not sure).

7. Looking for help finding the name of this fic on ao3 I’m have trouble hunting it back down. Burial mounds settlement days canon divergence.

Essentially the premise is that the people living in Yiling often see Wei Ying taking care of and teaching A-Yuan by the river and a woman one day who was also there to wash her clothes asked him to look after her son while she was busy. This snowballed into Wei Ying basically running a little informal school out of Yiling where he teaches and just looks after any child that is brought there, including orphans and prostitute’s children which is kinda illegal. Lan Zhan knows and regularly visits. If the children show aptitude for cultivation they usually get sent to the Lan or (later in the story) the Jiang. The rest of the Wens kinda accidentally become a part of the Yiling community so much so that they all move out of the burial mounds and into the town proper. Because they’ve all left the mounds and disconnected pretty hard from the cultivation community they don’t even realize that the Jin’s sent people to attack the mounds. They found no one and declared to the world that they had slayed the rest of the wen dogs alongside Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng only finds out his brother is alive because he’s been informed that a small school in the Jiang territory hasn’t been paying taxes and when he goes to investigate finds Wei Ying safe and sound. @coffeehousefanfics

I’m pretty sure I found this fic on here but now I can’t seem to find it. I’m not sure if it was on a itmf or fic finder. But it’s the one where wwx takes a curse from some ghost in order for her to move on. It’s a curse where he can’t see or feel anyone that feels “strongly” about him. He assumes the juniors all either hate or fear him and I forgot what he assumed lwj. They say to break the curse he has to accept the others’ feelings. So he tried to accept the fact that jin ling hated him although jin ling did not mean what he said and was confused at how wwx reacted. I think lan jinyi was the one who figured out wwx couldn’t see them because he launched at him as if he was going to attack him and wwx didn’t flinch. In the end he starts seeing and feeling impressions of them until he can see them in full again. Please help? I’ve been through my history and bookmarks and all open tabs of ao3. No such luck.

Since tumblr is very atomized both in the sense of reblogging as well as people not linking back to things, and given the chaotic events the last few days that bring up some serious questions about the state of the site, I am attempting to put together all of the context in one place. I've also attempted to Wayback/ArchiveToday every link and image as much as possible, so hopefully I've covered everything in case these blogs delete or get deleted. (And hopefully with equal seriousness and humor of the situation, as befits tumblr?) If I'm missing anything, please feel free to let me know. I'm hoping I've also missed larger discussions happening elsewhere, but, again, tumblr's sharing structure makes it difficult to bring it all together coherently and cohesively. So:

A tumblr user sends @/photomatt, aka the Tumblr/Automattic CEO, an ask about the situation: https://www.tumblr.com/photomatt/742806189400866816/you-gonna-do-anything-or-make-any-statement-about Wherein he says their policy is generally to not comment on individual cases, but "[i]n predstrogen's case in addition to some mistagged sexually explicit posts, which on its own wouldn't be that bad, we have documented cases of harassment against other users". He then continues, "she made threats of violence against Tumblr staff", with this included screenshot:

He continues that death threats are never okay, they have terminated a different user over this situation and threats already, and that they take threats seriously and involve "police and FBI where appropriate".

He also comments that the staff is not transphobic, he doesn't think they/he/the site deserves that reputation, and casually includes that tumblr apparently had a transphobic moderator abusing their duties both in action and through bribes: "Why do we wrongly have a transphobe reputation? We did have an external contract moderator last year that was making transphobic moderation (and also selling moderation, criminally). As soon as we were aware that person was fired, and we later terminated the entire relationship with that contracting firm and have brought almost everything in-house (at great cost). I have previously commented on this publicly, several times."

Later on he comes back to edit pronouns in the post in regards to accusations of misgendering @predstrogen.

He continues to reply to some asks, including one about tumblr's banning trans women through moderation: https://www.tumblr.com/photomatt/742822115555868672/all-you-ever-do-is-drop-the-ban-hammer-on-trans To which he replies: "Community guideline violations, including mistagging, harassment of other users, and threats of violence, all three of which were repeated in predstrogen's case, were the reasons for the suspension, not her identity. There are obviously tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of trans men and women on this site—why would our accused transphobia be applied to just this one user? The most parsimonious explanation is that it was because of the stated community guideline violations, not her identity as a trans woman." This is seemingly in conflict with Tumblr's own notification to @predstrogen, which was for "sexually explicit materials".

I’m watching it for the first time (well, technically I watched S2 & S3 before, but remember nothing about it really). Just got the whole series on DVD last year.

Only on S2 right now, but am already obsessed with Harm x Mac (both individually & as a ship)!

Plus, a couple of other people (@starrybouquet & harmandmac) are in the dumpster fire with me.

So, please feel free to come join us and revive this nearly dead fandom!

You do make a very good argument!

Plus I started watching the show shortly after I joined the Navy and now I’m about to retire, so there’s some good poetic symmetry there that I like.

If you’re looking for fanfic, almost everything predates AO3. There’s some great stuff on ff.net, especially if you go back deep to when the show was still airing. which i, like many other likeminded people who partake in delusion now and then, interpreted as a message by either mike or will, directed to the other. because it just makes sense.

the little delusional byler in my head tells me that friends don't lie but showrunners do, and there is a bit of hope left there, but among other ideas one i like is that this could be a note from terry ives to el (x), considering the significance of the date outside of just will (it's the date of el's escape from the lab, i think).

but then there's the tweet i usually see omitted from posts i see about this message (and one i was going to omit myself but just now noticed before clicking post):

this is giving me phone call cutting out mid word rather than a written, redacted note, but who knows? certainly not me. i know nothing anymore tbh

another thing to mention is that these were posted in october 2019, so take them with a grain of salt, but then again — season 4 was announced with a teaser on 30th september 2019 (FLASH WARNING!!!). a teaser that included allusions to several plot points that made it to the final cut of season 4 (the logo recreated with vines resembling the creel house, the grandfather clock, the slogan "we're not in hawkins anymore" relating to the cali crew and el in nevada). it's pretty possible they already knew about the paintings, the letters, etc.

PLEASE let me know your theories on this, it's one of my favourite still unsolved st mysteries!! do you believe that it's not about byler? if yes, what else do you think it could be?

I used to follow your website at the dawn of the century even you wrote with Karasu. I'm not sure what happened between you two and it's not my intention to bring up any bad business, however I was just wondering if your original works were still floating around somewhere where I could read them again. To be honest as a (at the time) young gay man trying to find a way to come to terms with myself and life, your stories were an honest breath of fresh air. Not many people were doing gay stories let alone inventive and well written ones, so they hold a special place in my heart. I recall you were trying to get Touch the Sky published and I had always tried to keep an eye out for it in book communities and Amazon. Were you successful and I missed it? I would love to read your original works from back then again if possible.

This is such a sweet ask, I really appreciate it! What a long time ago that was. I have some good news and some medium news for you...

Firstly, no worries about bad situations because Karasu and I are actually married now! We'll be celebrating our seventh anniversary later this year. She's not online as much as she used to be because of real life stuff, and we don't write together that much anymore but she still helps me plan all my stories.

The original stuff we wrote back then isn't technically up anymore. Our old livejournal (knkfics.livejournal.com) is still functional but it's friends-locked due to a plagiarism incident and I can't add more friends to it because they limited the number for free accounts. Our own website went down a long time ago. That being said, if you use the Wayback Machine, you can still get to some of it here (https://web.archive.org/web/20050211232749/http://www.fatalistic.net/knkfics/original.html). Just please keep in mind for anyone who clicks that link that this is stuff I wrote almost twenty years ago, mostly when I was in college, and it's not up to the standard of what I post today lol.

As for Touch the Sky, we started rewriting it but never finished. There was a lot going on back then, we wrote a LOT of different things and that one just never found an end we were satisfied by.

That being said, I do have some published novels now, although they are self-published, and they are queer as hell! Neither seriers is finished yet but I swear they will be someday!

Please feel free to tell me to get lost, but I was hoping to get some tips from you.

I'm about to start my first big girl research paper. I'm very comfortable with writing, but I'm not so comfortable with research.

I was wondering if you had any tips for doing effective research, particularly how to keep your research organized (I'm a bit of a mess).

Of course, and I reiterate that I am always open for academia questions, and will answer them to the best of my ability. As ever, my advice will be fairly general in nature and broad in scope, since I don't know what subject you're working in and what level you're at, but I'll presume it's a university-level research paper of approximately 20 to 30 pages. (Or possibly longer, i.e. 60 pages.) But this will be applicable regardless of which subject or length you're planning on, and as a solid rule of thumb for future projects, so:

1. Choose good sources. I know this might seem self-explanatory, but indeed, not as often as you would think. Wikipedia is a decent place to start looking for bibliography/reading lists, but remember that by its nature as an open-access, crowd-edited source that prioritizes what is free rather than what is recent, it leans heavily toward out-of-date and older scholarship that doesn't represent the latest work in the field. Things from the 19th and early 20th century get cited often because they're in the public domain and there's no copyright issue, so if you base your premise on what Wikipedia says, you might end up arguing against something that's 50 years out of date anyway. Besides, you can't cite Wikipedia word-for-word because you need to give your reader the ability to go back and check your citations, and since anyone can edit any article, that specific sentence or phrase might no longer be there by the time someone looks for it.

Okay, so where might you get extensive and high-quality research material instead? Glad you asked! For starters, Google Scholar, JSTOR, Smithsonian Open Access, RefSeek, SpringerLink, BASE (Biefeld Academic Search Engine), and UChicago Journals are all waiting for you! Many of these will also turn up results without the need for an academic login, though to read full text for free, you will often need an institutional/university email (which I presume you have). Just plug in some keywords from your research project/area of interest and see what comes up. Remember that the best research is:

Peer-reviewed, aka published in a journal that is reputable, searchable, run by professionals, and reviewed by other scholars prior to publication, or in a book from an academic press.

Recent, as obviously, you want to argue from the most recent work in the field and not accidentally retread an old argument; remember, don't confuse what is immediately accessible with what is the most useful or relevant.

Connected to other research: are the authors citing other publications in their field? Do they provide a summary of other literature and explain how it connects with their hypothesis? Is it clear how this contributes to/answers a current question?

Timely and relevant, especially if it comes from a non-academic source such as a newspaper, magazine article, blog, etc. It's fine to cite these things in support of your main point, but remember that your primary source material should be up to an academic standard. Are you just citing Rando Blog From The Internet as a trusted source, or a newspaper article on the Wayback Machine from 1873, as one of my students did once, bless their hearts?

Complex and representing a variety of perspectives. Even if you intend to argue for one interpretation or version of events, as most papers do, you need to show that you're aware of competing arguments, and that you know how to foil against/contrast them with your main narrative. You shouldn't just be reading or citing things that only make the point you want to make; you need to demonstrate intellectual effort and an attempt to consider sources that may agree only partly or indeed, not at all, with what you're trying to say, since you will have to include and/or refute them.

2. Save your sources! Once again, this might seem obvious, but I have a damn doctorate and I can't tell you how many times I have done something stupid like looking for a source that I had super definitely saved or a page number that I swore I had written down, only to discover that... no, I had not. If you find a PDF that looks relevant, download it to your computer! If you find a URL that's helpful, save it to a Google/Word doc (and also make sure you label what it references, so you're not confused later). Make a file folder with the name of your project and put all your documents in there. Know what information you will be required to cite in a bibliography/reference list and make sure that you take down all that at the start. Truly, it sucks to go hunting for that one missing page number when you're almost done and you swore it was just RIGHT THERE.

Likewise, I have only listed e-resources above, but don't forget to go to your friendly local university library and tell the librarian that you're working on such-and-such paper about this topic and would like help finding material. Librarians fucking LOVE being helpful and teaching you how to best utilize their vast skills and resources, and they will load you up right away, as well as giving you tips on how to navigate the catalogue and subject-specific databases. That way, you will also have physical books to reference, which can be much easier than trying to chase up a lost e-version.

(No, seriously. Go ask your university librarian. Those are your tuition dollars at work and that's what they are there to help with.)

3. Plan out your paper and create an outline. If you're not sure how to do this, take a look at some academic essays/journal articles and see how they are structured. Keep in mind that someone should be able to read your introduction, chapter headings, and conclusion, and get the gist of what the research is about, its major findings, and how it fits into/supports/challenges the existing consensus in the field. The meat of the chapters are for showing your work and demonstrating how you got from A to B to C to D, but you should be able to convey the most important points at the beginning, the end, and the chapter titles in the middle. If you're writing, say, a 20-page paper, you still need to figure out the main thematic chunks and how it makes most sense to organize them. Are you trying to write about B before you've properly introduced and established A? What information do you need to give a reader who can be assumed to have basic intelligence but not much (or any) subject-specific knowledge? Are you using too much technical/scholarly jargon without defining it? In other words, what do you need to lay out, and in what order, to make a smooth transition from A (introduction) to D (conclusion?) Are you doubling back or referencing B too often when you're trying to move onto C? Etc etc. Obviously, there will be some overall overlap, but you can usually identify main subjects, sub-headings, and how it would make the most sense to organize them. If you need to, use color-coding or other visual cues to keep your groups together.

4. Double-check your required citation method/formatting. Different academic fields use different styles of formatting for their footnotes, endnotes, in-text citations, bibliographies, etc. I am a historian, so I use MHRA/MLA-style. Other academic fields might use APA, Harvard, or Chicago-style. It will save you a lot of headaches (and impress your professor!) if you check at the beginning what style you need to use for referencing and are consistent about applying it throughout. Also, yet again from the Department Of This Should Be Obvious But Somehow Isn't: make sure to double-space your paper and use Times New Roman or Arial font size 12, proofread/edit, and add page numbers, your name/student ID, and other supporting information to make it easier on your professor. If they want to tell you to double-check an argument you made on page 6, and there isn't a number on page 6, they will have to write it on your paper themselves and then they will get annoyed. Not, uh, speaking from personal experience here or anything. Make sure there isn't wonky/differently sized text or extra spaces/big page breaks, the first line of every paragraph is indented 0.5 pt (this can be set in Microsoft Word) and otherwise that it visually looks like a nicely presented and professional-quality piece of research. If in doubt, ask someone else to look it over and see what strikes them as strange/inconsistent.

(Also, use reference software such as Zotero. It will make your life SO much easier.)

5. Give yourself time to properly write. Yeah, sure, there are the people who procrastinate on their paper until the very last minute, then bang it out in a Red Bull-fueled rush and finish an hour before it's due, but that's not a way to actually do meaningful or useful writing, or come up with a product that you're proud to have your name on. Besides, you'll just create a ton of unnecessary anxiety for yourself and waste the time and effort that you've already invested, so... yeah, plan your time wisely and make space for drafting, revisions, research, proofreading, and all the rest. I usually had my papers in college/grad school done at least two days before they were due, which gave me time to read them over and check for errors, add more citations, or otherwise improve the finished product.

Basically, if you're serious about doing a good job, give it the time and effort that it deserves. If you're worried about getting distracted, there are browser add-ons/phone apps that can prevent you from mindlessly screwing around on the internet rather than working. Set a timer and work in chunks, then take a break, or whatever other method is best for you. You will have to manage your own time and nobody will hold your hand or babysit you, so have a realistic sense of how much you can accomplish each day and how that contributes to the overall progress/project timeline. If you're a slow worker, you have to plan for more time, and even if you're fast, give yourself a little extra just in case.

Anyway, I hope all that makes sense and is helpful, and happy researching!

I know this is probably a long shot, but I was looking on the wayback machine and (as I suspected) there are a bunch of now-deleted trailers for season 7 that don't exist anywhere online as far as I can tell (they do now!). "The Weight of the World" is the only one still on YouTube, but "The Gift of Giving", "Wings", "A Miracle Encounter", "Me", and "Leaves" -- while they are still linked on the wiki -- are completely dead, and not archived on the wayback machine aside from their thumbnails in this snapshot from 2012. I'd love to start an archive (I have one for WWDITS, but IASIP is significantly harder to manage due to its age) so if any of you guys have come across any archive.org compilations (the only one I know of is this one, but they're mainly DVD extras) or have any Google drives or anything, please let me know. It seems like someone's gone wild with copyright striking recently (it's Disney on my end, but not sure if that's Canada-specific) and like 90% of the extras have been completely obliterated.

UPDATE: Someone on reddit compiled all of the season 7 promos (lower quality than I'd like, but they're not too bad), and there are individual dailymotion links as well. "The Gift of Giving", "Wings", "A Miracle Encounter", and "Me". I believe "Leaves" is still missing, but it's hard to tell which is which.

More stuff I'm hoping to find mirrors for under the cut:

Archive of Paddy's Pub Blog; everything seems to be locked behind a broken age restriction button. I'm specifically interested in checking out the "Dennis' Erotic Memoirs" section (not the episode) or anything written by Dennis on the blog, but if anybody can figure out how to bypass the age restriction in earlier captures or has a mirror of the site before it was taken down that'd be even better.

Extras, promos, behind the scenes specials for all seasons. There seem to be quite a few for S1 out there still because it's mostly included on the DVD, but there are a couple that seemingly aired on TV that actually feature cut scenes. This one here has extra footage of Mac and Carmen, as well as Dennis in his day man costume without the codpiece. I have a feeling that there may be similar "outtakes" or alternate/extended scenes in other deleted videos.

Any additional scenes from the unaired pilot (I believe all we have is pulled from this behind the scenes footage, but worth a shot).

A high quality rip of the season 9 bloopers. I did manage to dig up an unwatermarked version from the wayback machine, but it's extremely low quality.

High quality version of the promotional music video "Going Back to Philly"; there's a relatively HQ version on YouTube that's been cut up, and a full LQ version, but it would be great to have a full HQ version. FOUND ONE!

Anyone willing to rip DVD/Bluray extras from their own copies. I can only find partial archives of S1-6's DVD extras, with some from later seasons being uploaded to YouTube at one point, but the majority of the links are dead now. I'm planning on buying a full set of DVDs/Blurays myself at some point, but they're either extremely expensive or extremely hard to find, so it'll probably take some time.

Fanbinding Process 1: Typesetting

Someone asked me to chronicle a fanbinding project a while back and now that I'm in the starting stages I figured "oh yeah I should do that!"

Disclaimer: still new at this. Please don't judge me. And also this is just what I do and really when it comes to some of the smaller details, that's personal choice and stuff you'll decide once you get going and know what you wanna do with it!

Anyway current project: A Choriambic Progression (one of my faves!) (I'm also doing In Between Days at the same time but I'm further along in that one so it's not a good one to really show.)

Step 1: Gotta save the fic! I'll say ahead of time how I do this with AO3 fic, even though A Choriambic Progression isn't on AO3. With that, I go to Download > HTML. I've found that way will copy over all the formatting whereas the other ones didn't for me. Then I open the HTML file and copy paste into Google Docs.

Instead with A Choriambic Progression I just went to the Wayback Machine link and copy/pasted all of that.

Step 2: I do my page setup before fixing the body of the work, so I inserted a few pages above the work. I consulted a few books on hand to decide the layout. Page 1 is a simple title page:

I know when I print, odd numbered pages will show up on the right and even numbers will be on the left. So when I first open the book, the simple title page will be face up.

Step 3.) Which means for Page 2 I do the copyright page:

I temporarily removed my actual location for this, but: I made a name for my bindery. Most I've seen have the location of the publishing company, so I have my location in that section. Most copyright pages vary in the setup and even some information, so I borrowed what I liked! A lot have like "First Printing: Date, Second Printing: Date" so I list where all I've found the work, plus when I'm binding it. Even though it's July right now, I figure most of my work on this will be in August so I put August 2023 for that.

For ISBN I usually will put AO3 ID: and the work ID #. Since this was originally posted to Ink Stained Fingers I used Ink ID instead and it's ID # (which is 21???? Very cool.) Also since this fic is old and not really anywhere else, I had to do my best guessing on the date, which as best as I can figure was sometime 2004? And the print line for funsies! Though I don't think I'll do more than this one printing of it, but who knows!

Step 4.) Images in Canva. Which is just....me creating whatever icons and images I want to use in Canva, which is at least a title image. In Canva I opened an Instagram Post sized template. I threw in the title + artist. I had no idea what sort of art I wanted, so I just typed in "magic" and found this crystal & plant art I liked. I fixed up the font how I liked and then went to Share > Download > check Transparent Background > Select Pages: 19 (to just save page 19) > Download.

I also went into another Canva project for smaller images that i call "icons" to make my bindery icon and also a simple image I want to have at the top of the first page and downloaded both of those.

Step 5.) Back in Google Docs aaaand....I knew I'd need some pages before my title image so on Page 3 I added the "archive information" (which is where I'll normally pull the info from AO3, but I did the same basic idea here.)

Then Step 6.) I inserted another blank page (CTRL + Enter) and on Page 6 I went to Insert > Image > Upload from Computer and added my title image. Below it I added my bindery icon and spent over fiddling with it to get it properly centered. (It never wants to center correctly.) Iirc I went into Format > Align & Indent and played with "center" and "increase/decrease indent" until it behaved itself.

Step 7.) CTRL + Enter for another blank page. Then I make sure the start of the fic is on an odd page (though I can always fix this later in Acrobat.) I inserted my cute lil story icon above the start of the story:

Step 8.) I realized I had a problem in that I did all this setup BEFORE setting my font. So I had to CTRL + A to select it all and set it to Times New Roman 16, which I know will print in a way I like.

Next I'll say, I like to keep the space between paragraphs in an ode to fanfic-y ways. But I also like indented paragraphs. So this is a personal choice, but with everything still selected I went to:

Format > Align & Indent > Indention Options > set Left & Right to 0. Then select Special Indent > First Line > set to .5.

THEN I had to go back and fix my title, copyright, and archive pages, but it's less annoying to do that than it would be to try to highlight over 300 pages to do this for JUST the fic. I later added some extras (such as the poem at the end, the author's note, and some review/recommendations for the fic that I wanted to format differently.)

....Basically just figure out how you want to format it.

Step 9.) CTRL + F. This fic was a NIGHTMARE to fix up, ngl. I did all of this last night but basically...I had to find all the scene breaks by going CTRL + F and searching "***" so I could replace those with a horizontal line (Insert > Horizontal Line.) But a few places had tildes instead so I had to do an extra CTRL + F: "~~~~" That wasn't so bad.

The bad part was realizing how much had to be italicized. Regular italic words had a "*" on either side, while correspondence began and ended with an underscore. So I had to CTRL + F: "_" and then highlight and italicize all the letters. Then CTRL + F: "*" to find all the italicized words of which there were like 200. Very tedious.

Step 10.) File > Download > PDF Document

Step 11.) I opened the PDF in Adobe Acrobat for my final stages. Mostly here I make sure all of the pages are in an order I like and make sure all of my pages that need to end up on the right are odd numbers. And if not, I can go to the sidebar on the right and go to "Organize Pages"...there I can reorganize or add blank pages where needed.

Step 12.) Page Numbers & Headers! Again this is personal preference but I can show you how I did it and you can make your own decisions about how you want to do it.

Close out of Organize Pages. Then from the sidebar I chose "Edit PDF." Then at the top toolbar I click on "Headers & Footers" and select "Add."

For me, I wanted the title as a header, and I wanted to insert page numbers. So in "Header Center" I wrote the title and in "Footer Center" I clicked on "Insert Page Numbers."

Then because I want my page numbering to start on Page 3 (I like to start numbering at the Archive Information page) I click on "Page Range Options" and in "Pages From:" I changed "1" to "3."

Note, if you fiddle with the pages later on and reorganize or add new blank pages, Adobe won't adjust the page numbers for you, which is why I make sure my pages are all in order first.

Step 13.) My least favorite part is REMOVING headers & footers from pages I don't want them on. So on all blank pages I took off the title & page number. I took the title off of the Archive information and the Title Image page. I took the title off of the "Recommendations" pages later on, too. It's not only tedious but Acrobat likes to be difficult about letting me select the page numbers so it takes a few tries of me getting the page just so before I can select and delete the page number.

Anyway at that point it's ready to go so I make sure to save it to my Fanbinding folder and next up I can print! So...we can do printing & page folding and maybe page cutting in Part 2.

Lee Chaolan's Early History

Yes of course! I'll focus on Lee's childhood/ pre-Tekken 1 life, just because otherwise my answer will get too long. Feel free to send another ask if you want me to cover something else.

Lore

We're in the process of revamping the Tekken Wiki at the moment, and looking to source all biographies on there currently with direct links to the manuals and game guides they are from. At the moment we are still short on some original Tekken material, including for Lee Chaolan, however there are other reputable places that also source the biographies we currently have on there. So, until we get hold of the missing manuals, this is as close to Lee's canonical Tekken (1) biographies as we have on the wiki at the moment:

Version 1 (This is from the Tekken Zaibatsu forums. All the Tekken 2 biographies in forum are faithful translations of the original Official Japanese website so it is likely the Tekken (1) biographies are as well. Unfortunately the Official Japanese website is now down and the Tekken 1 version was almost entirely image-based, so not retrievable on wayback machine. It is corroborated on another wiki which has fairly reliable sources though.)

Chaolan is Heihachi Mishima's adopted son, and Kazuya Mishima's rival. As Kazuya's rival, he was expected to follow him as closely as possible; from a young age, the same imperialistic teachings that were hammered into Kazuya were also hammered into him. Those teachings drove him to master the martial arts.

In the underground world of fighting, he is feared and is known as "the Silver Haired Devil."

Version 2 (This version likely comes from a Tekken 1 Playstation manual, of which there are transcriptions online, however for the wiki we verify everything with paper or scan copies of manuals, so this one is still waiting on a full citation)

Lee's parents died when he was a young child, leaving him to fend for himself on the streets. Facing a hostile environment each day, he quickly became a skilled scrapper with reflexes that were amazing for a boy of his age. It was these qualities that caught the eye of Heihachi, who witnessed Lee fighting off several other kids while on a business trip. Impressed by Lee's street-fighting skill, Heihachi decided to adopt Lee. Heihachi then took Lee Chaolan back to Japan to be educated.

Heihachi never actually felt any emotion towards Lee; the real purpose was to give Kazuya a rival to inspire him to shape up. Their combat skill is equal, but those who know Lee's power fear the "Silver-Haired Demon".

These are the two biographies we use on the wiki, though, like I said, they do need stronger citation. The Tekken 1 manuals we have access to at the moment do not have biographies in for Lee. If you have one that does, please get in contact with me.

As well as his Tekken 1 profiles, we have some throw away lines in Lee's profiles from other games. I'll just put the relevant excerpts here, you can find the full versions on Lee's wiki page:

Official Tekken 7 Website Profile (Japanese) Lee Chaolan has a long suffering history with the Mishima clan. Heihachi Mishima in his treacherous wisdom adopted Lee when he was a boy to create a rival for his son Kazuya. As Kazuya’s adopted brother, Lee was given the same education and upbringing befitting a son of the Mishima clan.[...]

We can also extropolate some more facts comfortably about Lee by setting him in the context of other characters' profiles, especially Kazuya's. Given that Lee was a skilled fighter that Heihachi adopted off the streets, he had to have been adopted after the events that occurred when Kazuya was five years old (Jinpachi's imprisonment, Kazumi's death, Kazuya being thrown from a cliff), as Lee was 4 years old at this time. He was adopted into the family as a child, and he and Kazuya were raised together by Heihachi, likely right up until the time of the first King of Iron Fist Tournament.

This was an extremely tough and trying childhood, and he was shaped by the same Mishima teachings as Kazuya. He was also given an extensive education befitting a member of the aristocracy, and educated in matters of business as well as trained in Mishima Style Fighting Karate. His Tekken 2 profile states that he is a prodigy and excelled in both of these, and we can see his brilliance later as well in the field of robotics, where he designs, programs, creates, and maintains many of his robots personally.

From his martial arts style and outfits already in Tekken 1 we know that Lee was distancing himself from Mishima Ryu karate, and favoured mixing in other styles and forgoing a gi like Kazuya and Heihachi wear. We're told he has a title the "Silver Haired Demon" in underground martial arts tournaments, so he's garnered a reputation for himself fighting secretly, likely without Heihachi's knowledge or blessing. Many of his moves have much in common with Marshall Law, meaning he may have trained with Marshall, and we indeed have lots of old unverified sources floating about that state Lee was given a branch of the Zaibatsu in the US to manage, and that he trained with Paul and Marshall whilst living over there. Then of course from his animations, art, other outfits, and later, endings and voicelines, etc, you can start to paint a much richer picture of Lee.

Like Kazuya, Lee's outfits range from very casual to high-end formal, and neither of them have any interest in wearing the traditional Japanese outfits Heihachi favours. They're both people shaped by Heihachi and in rebellion against him. They're both grounded in Heihachi's teachings about strength, power, and weakness, and reacting against it. And they locked by this upbringing in a perpetual rivalry with one another despite have extremely similar upbringings. I think the key to understanding Lee as a character is to see his similarities and differences to Kazuya, as someone who has been hurt in a similar way, and his similarities and differences to Heihachi, who he in many ways emulates, whether consciously or not. Lee is someone who's got all of Kazuya's rage at the injustice of being a wronged child, all Heihachi's drama when it comes to charming the public, and all his own insecurities as someone both bound to and excluded from a legacy that asked everything of him and gave him very little in return.

Headcanons

My headcanons for Lee's early childhood are primarily based on @thaliexvii 's. We have been rping Tekken and co-writing fics on Tekken together for some years now, and I tend to specialise in Kazuya whilst they specialise in Lee. We've built up a canon-compliant childhood for Kazuya and Lee over the years, and have shared some of that in stories. A lot of it is in drafts we haven't finished yet.

For this reason, I think you'd be best off sending an ask to @thaliexvii for young Lee headcanons. They are literally made of Lee headcanons. There are so many headcanons they've fallen into my head too and I get to share them. If you get a chance, I would recommend their fic Lee Chaolan's (more or less) excellent life in the Mishima family, the opening chaapters of which lay down a lot of headcanons mixed with lore for Lee's early life which both of us now use as a basis for our ideas of him. Not many of our joint works from early childhood are up, but here is one we co-wrote about young Lee and Heihachi.

I guess the most noticable facet in our depiction of Lee and Kazuya's childhood is that we don't think it was a constant war between them. Heihachi is the main target of their fear, and when in front of him, they will try to one-up one another, but they will also try to mitigate damage by playing off one another to manipulate Heihachi. They don't want to see each other beaten down by Heihachi. They want to beat one another at the games Heihachi forces them to play, but they comprehend one another's suffering - something that makes them very close as well as constantly at odds. We attempt to show awkward acts of kindness between them, when they don't think they will be hurt by the effort, and to explore Heihachi as the driving motivator of their friction with one another. There are protective moments that come out for one another - Kazuya will always try to divert Heihachi's physical anger to himself, and play it off as part of his stubbornness, and Lee will try to fill in for Kazuya's social failings when occaisions arise. They know one anothers strengths and weaknesses extremely well, and have the potential to be great assets to one another, or each other's worst enemies.

My very first Tekken fic was a pre Tekken 1 story exploring Lee and Kazuya's tumultuous relationship as brothers who know each others' pain too well. It's still a topic I come back to often and that ran throughout my trilogy of Tekken fics as a key arc, because I love thinking about them.
