An update on the Recanati Summer Study Abroad Program
As many of you already know, the Graziadio Center has had an amazing partnership with the Scuola Dante Alighieri - Campus Infinito for several years. Every summer our students of Italian travel to Recanati, Italy in order to participate in their month-long study abroad where they get the chance to learn and improve their Italian, partake in multiple half-day and full-day field trips, become immersed in the culture, and eat plenty of yummy Italian food. The 2024 summer edition was one of our most successful ones yet, as a cohort of over forty students traveled with program assistant Diego Brol Batres to Recanati–one of the largest numbers we have ever had. As always, those who decide to apply through CSULB will receive a discounted price and are therefore able to participate at an affordable price that includes lodging and tuition. Included in this summer’s cohort were several high schoolers and parents, alumni, and students of other universities hence anyone–CSULB student or not–of any level of Italian can apply. If you are interested, please reach out to Diego Brol Batres at: [email protected] for more information. You may also find additional information at Campus Infinito’s website. Don’t hesitate to reach out today!

Went to my old stomping grounds and visited my small amount of property on school campus. My Alumni brick. They had to abbreviate my degree because it’s such a long name to fit on a brick. So proud to be a 49er. I had many memories from this school and learned a lot. One of the better Cal State schools to attend. School name *DOES* matter. Tips for College Graduates & Young Professionals.
I honestly get a little miffed when people try to put all colleges on the same level and say that it doesn’t matter where you go to college...
OF COURSE IT MATTERS.
If an employer is choosing between two candidates who are EXACTLY the same on paper but one attends Yale (for example) and the other attends a “non-target school”, realistically who do you think they would prefer?
To the people who try to say all colleges are the same: You are being oblivious. I get that people come from different backgrounds (hell, I’m first-generation American & my parents never attended college!) but please don’t discredit people’s accomplishments. Getting into college is an accomplishment, getting into a highly competitive college is an even greater accomplishment. Stop taking away from people’s accomplishments and instead focus on how YOU can better your application.
At the same time, while I personally believe it does matter where you go to college, WHAT you do in college is also important. College is what YOU make of it. If you attend Yale and don’t participate in any organizations and barely pass your classes, um....? Versus a student who went to a small state school who was president of an organization and achieved a 4.0 GPA? I’d hire the latter student, for sure.
Anyway, what if someone went to Yale? Maybe it does make them more marketable. Instead of grouching about it, figure out how you can make YOUR application better than theirs. School name isn’t the ONLY thing employers look for. You cannot change others, only your own mindset. Don’t focus on others, focus on your own growth and what you can do to expand yourself.
What do I think? Self-marketing and branding yourself is HUGE.
Here are my tips to everyone (regardless of whether you attended a “target” school or not):
Create a website. Include links to your resume, an “about me” section, a contact section etc. You want this website (or your LinkedIn) to be the first thing that pops up if anyone googles you. YOU take control of what people think of you. You really want one of the first Google search results to be from your high school newspaper days where you quoted that you liked the football game? Or do you want to change the narrative and be in control of what’s out there?
Quantify your accomplishments!!!!!!!!! I mean, I absolutely hate pretentious, braggy folks but um, this is different - quantify your accomplishments on your resume and website. Context is everything.
NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. Regardless of what school you attended, there are HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF ALUMNI OUT THERE!!! Having a connection like “Hi I went to CSULB” or “Hi I went to Harvard” is such an EASY opener. People are very prideful of where they went to college and love to help fellow students. Seriously, that “.edu” email is your golden ticket! Use it!
Join a professional organization. Let’s say you went to a non-target school and you don’t have as many resources as people who went to a target school. Join a professional organization like American Planning Association (example) and instead of saying what college you went to, you say you’re in APA. Now you have a TON of possible fresh connections you can make!
Do personal projects on the side. Anything that is related to your dream job and that you think can give you an extra boost.
TLDR; EVERYONE (regardless of what school they attended) needs to be on their A-game, get involved on campus, get good grades to maximize their recruitment process. Those who attend “non-target” schools may need to have more initiative and put in more effort (recruiters may not have these schools on their lists, for example), but IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. THE MOST SUCCESSFUL INDIVIDUALS AREN’T BASED OFF SCHOOL NAME BUT IT’S BASED OFF THEIR INITIATIVE AND AMBITION. (College choice can be indicative of this but not always, obviously.)

The pandemic has interrupted daily life all around Long Beach, and the Cal State Long Beach campus is a prime example: With classes moved to the virtual realm, the otherwise busy campus is eerily empty.
But the absence of students from the university’s physical campus doesn’t mean its contributions to the local economy have ceased, faculty and alumni said during a panel discussion on the school’s economic impact Monday.
“The spending impact on the local and regional economy is just a drop in the bucket,” said professor Seiji Steinmetz, chair of the CSULB economics department. “What we produce here is a way of thinking about the world and a way of being productive, engaged and, for lack of a better word, informed citizens.”
The local university ranks seventh in the nation among roughly 1,500 universities in terms of social mobility, which means socioeconomically disadvantaged students are able to better their financial situation after graduation.
The contributions of Cal State Long Beach faculty and students have continued even amid trying times. Though fewer students are contributing directly to the local economy, the real product of the university is creating informed citizens, Steinmetz said.
Alumni panelists also discussed an under-utilized opportunity for the university to collaborate with the city and local businesses to create pilot programs on a variety of subjects.
“I think it’s really important for us, for the city leaders, to be able to think about opportunities for the university to help us accomplish our goals,” Councilwoman Suzie Price, a class of ’94 CSULB graduate and former president of the Associated Students nonprofit on campus, told attendees. “We should be funding pilots all over, in every department that the city has.”
While funding projects long-term is often a challenge for the city, one likely to be exacerbated by pandemic-induced budget shortfalls, Price noted that there is plenty of funding available to explore potential solutions to city challenges like homelessness.
“We’re barely scratching the surface,” Price said about the utilization of those funding opportunities. “We have tons of money to fund pilot programs.”
For the university, city-funded pilot programs provide an excellent research opportunity, she added. “Where is there a bigger lab to work from than the city of Long Beach?” Price said.
The post Despite pandemic, CSULB’s economic contributions continue, faculty and alumni say appeared first on Long Beach Post.

Beyond these Four Walls — An Unconventional Approach to Education
Reflections and insights from a U.S. Department of State, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholar Alumna, Christina Wong
Even though many study abroad programs are grounded for the time being (reverting to virtual platforms for engagement), upon reflecting on my exchange experience, why is it important for Asian Americans to study abroad?
Photo: Lyon, France
“I want to study abroad.” My parents cringe. From my personal experience, it's a 'foreign' topic in most Asian American middle and low-income immigrant/2nd-generation families. Like most first-generation and minority college students, most of us tend to gravitate towards more practical vocations and majors—nursing, accounting, and medicine, to name a few.
While it's uncommon for the average American college student to study abroad (only about 3% do so), it's even more uncommon for Asian Americans. As an Asian American first-generation college student who majored in International Studies from CSU Long Beach (Go Beach!) and studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France (Aix-Marseille University '17/'18!), here are my insights and reflections on the importance of studying abroad for Asian Americans:
1. Reclaiming Our Culture
Multicultural and ethnic studies are often not mandatory courses in the United States. Thus, when I immersed myself in a completely different culture away from my Asian American community back in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, I became more keenly aware that I was Asian American--the history, traditions, food and customs. For instance, when I shared with others (e.g. expats, French classmates) about what it means to be Asian American, those moments caused me to desire to understand the AAPI identity deeper. I started to develop my appreciation and desire for comprehending more about our history through documentaries and discussions with like-minded peers, and this I believe can happen on many levels for other AAPI too.
2. Building Skills for Stronger Global Citizens
From my experience as a 3rd/4th generation Chinese American (my grandfather was processed through Angel Island, and my parents were born and raised in San Francisco Chinatown), oftentimes I find that my community has a very strict sense of what a classroom is--textbooks, exams, and four walls. In a global classroom, however, the walls come down. Studying abroad forced me to learn to be more adaptable in my host country and build stronger interpersonal and intercultural skills--all things needed today to become more well-rounded 21st century global citizens.
3. A Chance to Share Our Stories
“What’s the United States like?” I, an Asian American, was often asked this by my classmates (fellow expats from around the world -- Syria, Senegal, parts of Asia, etc.) and French peers. Being able to share Asian American experiences and stories with others is empowering and also helps show a broader and more multicultural picture of the U.S. to the international community.
Back home, I continue to share stories about my language exchange experience in hopes to support more of my community to go abroad. For my high school’s alumni association newsletter (Abraham Lincoln High School in SF, go Mustangs!), I wrote an article about my study abroad experience. My Gilman re-entry project was about exposing my peers to STEM career perspectives from CleanTech Start-ups of the French Provencal region (retrospectively, I wish the audio production was better haha). And lastly, for my college alumni association (CSULB), I shared some peer advice about staying on track for planning and considering studying abroad during this era of COVID-19.

Photo: San Francisco’s Lunar New Year Parade 2019 (year of the pig), one of the largest and oldest in the United States.
Based in San Francisco, CA, I often approach my art and work with my international, interdisciplinary experiences in mind. As many who dared say, be the change you envision. Thank you for reading. A bientôt mes amis~

C4 - Artist Conversation
The artist in this gallery, showcased in the Axelrad room, is Christine Nguyen. She is a graduate alumni of CSULB with a BFA from CSULB and an MFA from UCI. She is an accomplished artist with multiple exhibits, some noteable exhibits being at Huntington Beach Art Center and Glendale Community College.
She gathers her inspiration scientific depictions of nature. This is clear to see in her pictures that visibly reflect what one would see under a microscope. Her work is absolutely vibrant, showing the life in the kelp.
I am baffled that this is a photography series. There has to be a mix of digital art in this as there are deer in the picture. Overall beautiful and a refreshing take on nature art.

A letter on what's new at the Graziadio Center
Dear Friends of Il Postino,
Welcome to the Spring 2024 semester!
It is already March, and things are in full swing here at the Graziadio Center.
On February 7th, the Graziadio Center, in collaboration with the Clorinda Donato Center, RGRLL, and Università Roma3, organized a one-day event on the Telecollaboration program entitled Empowering Language Learners: Multilingualism And Motivation In Telecollaboration Programs. Professors Diego Cortés Velásquez and Elena Nuzzo (Roma3) gave a presentation and a hands-on workshop on telecollaboration. A roundtable with former participants enlightened our audience on the benefits of this pedagogical approach and a second roundtable, led by our instructors, focused on the future of this collaboration that started some six years ago. The event gave us food for thought and a clearer vision for the program’s future iterations. Meanwhile, it has been decided that our students of ITAL 100B, a class taught by Joanna Tatro, will participate in the Spring 2024 Telecollaboration.
On March 7th at 5:00 PM, Dr. Ilaria Tabusso-Marcyan (ASU) gave a talk entitled, “The Feminine Aspect in the Cultural Roots of Slow Food” in LA1-204 and via Zoom.
Dr. Tabusso-Marcyan examined the feminine aspects of Italian farming culture within recent Italian history and their influence in shaping the cultural foundations of the international movement of Slow Food. Ilaria’s presentation covered parts of her recently published book, The Cultural Roots of Slow Food: Peasants, Partisans, and the Landscape of Italian Resistance (Lexington Books, 2024).
Our last event for the semester will be a talk by renowned scholar Serenella Jovino (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) on Italo Calvino’s animals and the Anthropocene, the date and other details will be shared soon.
Last summer, some twenty students took advantage of our summer abroad program in Recanati and spent four full weeks of class in this beautiful, little town in the Marche region. They enjoyed the experience enormously and came back galvanized and ready to continue their studies in Italian at CSULB. The importance of the Recanati program cannot be overstated, as it has historically helped us increase the number of our minors.
Program Assistant Diego Brol Batres is working to ensure that the new cohort will be as numerous and satisfied as the previous ones. He has toured high schools and community colleges to recruit students and has given presentations here at CSULB to prepare students for their time in Italy. It looks like another 20 students will go to Recanati this summer!
This issue of Il Postino features interviews with our Majors, MA students, alumni, and, for our Faculty Spotlight, alumna and instructor Jaclyn Taylor.
All of them have spent time in Recanati or in Italy (Lesly Valtierra is currently studying at the Ca’ Foscari University, in Venice!). They are our best ambassadors in that they can share their experiences and passion for all things Italian. They all have their own personal perspective and a unique background, and it is a pleasure to have them share their thoughts and enthusiasm on the pages of our newsletter.
Thank you all for your contribution to Il Postino–we wish you the best for this semester and your overall academic career!
Next semester, we hope to have up to eight new BA students. Which means, if everything goes as planned, and we are doing our best to achieve that, we will have a total of 14 Italian Studies majors in Fall 2024! This is a sign of a positive trend that started last year and hopefully will continue for the semesters to come. Showing growth is a good sign, especially when many language departments struggle and are under scrutiny all over the country.
Club Italia is another tremendous asset for the Graziadio Center, as it works tirelessly to promote Italian on campus. We thank you for all your work!
With Lesly Valtierra studying in Italy, Club Italia was in need of a new Treasurer; their new lineup of officers is now:
Antonina Campbell, Ailyn Saavedra, Nikki Jerman, Alberto Sanchez Alonso, Maria Gabriela Tapia, and Josue Mendiola
To find out each officer’s role, look for the Club Italia section below!
In addition to hosting Tavola Italiana (every other Wednesday at 5 in AS-384), they are also preparing an event to showcase how a BA in Italian can help you in your post-CSULB life (and perhaps change it)!
We will provide details on this exciting event soon; please check your inbox and your social media accounts for flyers.
Buon semestre e a presto!
