Would love to know your thoughts on the Planet of the Apes series, or at least the newest movie!
This is so kind of you, to ask!
I started watching those movies before my formal education. And they're in that teeny little corner of my brain where I just like things, without having examined why I like them. In that teeny little corner, I have my critical thinking and movie analyzation turned off, and I just enjoy things like singing animals even if the movie is objectively bad (I'm looking at you Alpha & Omega đ« ) or Transformers. So yeah, Planet of the Apes falls in there.
I know. I just made a post about how important it is to train your tastes for good stories, and accept no junk food...and then the very next post was like "the future is meaningless but the monkey movie is now" ^^" Look there's a time and place for examining why you like things and I'm just saying I haven't gotten down the list to why I like the monkey movies yet!
Until now! Partly because you're asking, partly because watching the new one made me start to think about what I liked about the first three...because the new one hit me differently. So what I'm getting at is, I'll answer you, but I'm going to be "thinking out loud" and we'll find out what I think of those movies as I type, and it's going to be rambly. Sorry! (Skip to the bottom to read about the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.)
I Miss Caesar
My favorite character in these movies is actually Koba, but Caesar is the heart and soul of them.
There's nothing particularly unique about Caesar as a main characterâhe's a coming-of-age, great-leader-from-nothing Savior-type character. He doesnât have many character flaws, heâs the idealist, etc.
But what makes you, the audience, love Caesar so much is that you get to see his story, and the whole driving hook of the moviesââapes with human intelligenceââembodied in him, from the very beginning.
Caesar has two really awesome things going for him. The first is that he is an ape, and you get to see his intelligence and his empathetic, human nature, grow in real-time. The audience is excited to see how heâll respond to the simplest thing because heâs so believably a super-intelligent ape. Youâre like, âooo, he just noticed that heâs wearing a leash, and the dog is wearing a leash, so how will he respond to that comparison? Ooo, now heâs meeting other apes, is he going to notice that they arenât as smart as him? Ooo, he just attacked a neighbor, but heâs smarter than the average animal on a rampage, so how will he feel about the moral repercussions of violence?â We want to watch an animal thatâs becoming self-aware; it almost doesnât matter what heâs doing, weâll watch it, because thatâs fascinating. Thatâs the first thing he has going for him.
But then the second thing he has going for him is that, even if he were human, heâs just a really inspiring, likeable character. If you rewrite Caesar as a human (but somehow keep the equivalent of âgradually becoming self-aware of his uniqueness as a creatureâ plot point) his story is still really compelling. Think about that scene where he learns what he is, for the first time, point-blank.
Once he learns who he is and what he is, he does not immediately turn bitter, or resent his adoptive father, or even try to change the status quo of his own life. He looks sad, and very contemplative about it, but when he loses his temper and gets taken to the ape sanctuary, he still wants to go back home. He wants to go back to living in an attic, with brief excursions to the woods on a leash. At that point he already knows, on some level, that heâs a super-intelligent freak of nature and could resent Will for making him that way or keeping him a secret. But he doesnât.
He also shows mercy to Rocket, the bully ape, and makes him super-intelligent.
He also shows signs of being interested in Cornelia, his eventual wifeâbefore she turns super-intelligent. While sheâs still significantly stupider, on a whole lower plane of intelligence, than him.
They give him all these little touches, like the fact that he wants to play ball with the other apes immediately when he meets them, instead of being shy, or treating their naked stupid selves like theyâre beneath him. Like the fact that he asks Willâs permission before he goes climbing. Like the fact that he gives them all super-human intelligence, instead of keeping that superpower for himself and leveraging it to his own advantage, or gatekeeping it for only the apes who are nice to him.
Heâs awesome because heâs got all the protective, trusting, loving, humility of our favorite pets. But then he takes all those pure qualities and combines them with supernatural intelligence, and ânoble leader of the packâ traits. So he feels like a wise king, even in the second movie, when, from our perspective, he should just beâŠa naked ape who talks in broken English and lives in a tree fort.
Probably the best character trait of Caesarâs is that he inherits this âfamilyâ mentality from his adoptive father, Will. He thinks that the difference between apes and humans is that apes are loyal and love one another, specifically âlike a family.â

And what that means to Caesar is that you would do anything to keep your family safe. Because thatâs what Will did. Will only made the serum that started this whole franchise because he was trying to cure his father of Alzheimerâs. Will was always willing to break rules and cheat the system and change the world if it meant he could keep his family safe, and that included Caesar, who was not his blood relation.
So to Caesar, being a family means you would never hurt the people in your family; you canât hurt them yourself, and you canât let anyone else hurt themâand you canât do things that would lead to them getting hurt, like starting a war.
And thatâs just really appealing. A noble leader whose whole heart is âfamily,â but also, heâs this really interesting animal-that-learns-human-empathy.
I was going to talk about Koba, but this is too long, so maybe in another post. Suffice to say, I think the first two movies do a really good job of pacing everything, so that you have plenty of time to fall in love with Caesar, feel like youâve watched him discover who he is and decide what to do with that in real-time, and then feel fully invested in the world heâs trying to build.
Basically what Iâm saying is, I think I just really love Caesar, and so does everyone else who watches him, because heâs really well-done. And Andy Serkis smashes this role out of the park. Itâs like my favorite thing heâs ever done. He does it perfectly. And in the fourth movie, I just go into itâŠalready missing Caesar.
War For the Planet of the Apes
I didnât like this movie as much as the first two. The first two Iâve seen over and over again. But the third one is not as enjoyable.
I think I donât enjoy it because a lot of it feels like gratuitous misery. I mean, I understandâtraditionally, in an epic-scale trilogy, you develop your main characters over the course of the first two movies. They learn who they are, they commit to a mission statement born out of the lessons theyâve learned, and then, in the third movie, that lesson learned gets tested with the âultimate challenge.â
Well, so, Caesar learned he was the leader of basically a naive species and the founder of a new worldâand the lesson he took from that was, âto keep my family safe, I must protect them from hate.â (I know thatâs broad, but what I mean by that is, Caesar initially took the apes to the woods when they were ârebornâ as their own species to hide them from humans, who would fear and hate what they couldnât understand. But then he had to protect them from a new form of hatred; the hatred of Koba, and other apes like him, who hated humans so much and hated anyone else being in power so much that he was willing to hurt âfamilyâ to satisfy that hatred.
So whatâs the ultimate test of âto keep my family safe, I must protect them from hate?â Giving Caesar hate. Caesar is not a hateful character. Heâs like the total opposite of thatâthatâs why he can single-handedly defend the ape species from Hate in general.
But you murder his wife and child in the first part of the movie?

Thatâll do it!
Plus, itâs been a long, hard fight and nothing he has done since the âwarâ against âhateâ started seems to be working, so heâs understandably tired even before Blue Eyes and Cornelia die. Then they die. And then the rest of the tribe gets nabbed. And Caesar is ready to focus all his energy on revenge, just like Koba.
So yeah, thatâs the correct âultimate testâ of everything Caesar has learned as a character, to put him through in this trilogy. But honestly, it was just too sad to enjoy watching.
And remember how I said that the two things Caesar has going for him as a character that make the movies (which are all about him) so enjoyable are:
Heâs a well-written, inspiring character outside of being an ape (we just talked about that side of the 3rd movie, how itâs the conclusion to that character.)
The movies are well-paced so that youâre fascinated by watching an animal become increasingly human-like and empathetic, without losing the best parts of a noble/niave/animal nature
Well. The problem is that, because of the way these movies go, the apes have to become less animal as the story goes on. The whole point is that theyâre as smart as humans now. So theyâll make human-like mistakes, and start to come to some of the same âconclusionsâ as âearly manâ did.
What Iâm saying boils down to, they stop acting so much like believable apes in War for the Planet of the Apes. They talk out loud more often than they pantomime or speak through obvious body language. Heck, Caesar has full on monologues or confrontations with the human villain, the Colonel, in the third movie.
What made his interactions with humans before so appealing to watch was that he would still act like an ape. When he wants the humans to drive him to his old home, he just lays in the back of the car and grunts and taps the window when theyâre getting close to make them stop, without explaining himself. Like your dog might, straining at his leash toward home when he wants to be done walking. But we, the audience, like that sort of thing because with Caesar, we know thereâs human levels of understanding behind all the appealing animal actions that make us think of our pets.
Itâs that sweet savage naivety. Itâs that fascinating simplicity meeting human wonder. You like watching Malcolm try to explain why they need to get the generators on, while Caesar just silently looks back and forth from him to the machines, because itâs fun to try and figure out whatâs going on in his head. Itâs fun to watch how the animal with superhuman intelligence will communicate that he sort of understands what the stranger wants. Itâs also fun to see how the new species of superhuman apes will still act like animals with each other.

The whole fact that, even though theyâre just as smart and technically non-savage, mentally, as we are, but thereâs still a part of the apes that will just follow Koba if he beats Caesar in a fistfight, is fascinating. The fact that Caesar is the most âevolvedâ of the apes, mentally and emotionally, but when Koba challenges his leadership or insults his love for his family, Caesar will just straight-up start ripping him to pieces with his fists, is fascinating. You keep watching to see what an anthropomorphized animal really looks like, because they make that part so believable.
But in War for the Planet of the Apes, the Apes donât have that contrast as much. Youâre not getting to see civilized, fully-realized human characters share you, the audienceâs, fascination with apes who are still figuring out what it means to be empathetic. Youâre not watching anthropomorphized animals anymore as much as youâre watchingâŠhairy, superstrong humans. Which brings us tooooâŠ
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Sorry it took so long to get to the part you asked me about đ
Theyâre just hairy, superstrong humans in this movie. Thatâs all. Theyâre very clearly super-humanly intelligent, they walk less like apes and swing through trees almost not-at-all after the first climbing part of the movie. They talk out loud (even though sign language wasnât completely abandoned, which I appreciated) even when theyâre just talking to themselves. They look more human, in the face. Itâs just a joy to watch Koba, and in this movie, Proximus, even though theyâre bad guys, because those two characters have the most animal-like faces. So you love to watch their snarly, long snouts and teeth speak human words, in ape-tones.
But the main ape characters all have human-like faces. Too human-like. They look uncanny-valley-y in some shots. (Except Anaya, who I liked best out of the new main three apes.)
And like I said, they have these more-advanced cultures, which just makes them feel more human. It felt like I was watching a movie about, like, a tribe of post-apocalyptic humans meeting the leftovers of civilized humanity. Not anthropomorphized animals meeting the leftovers of civilized humanity.
I kept waiting for the apes to have those fascinating interactions with the human characters. I kept waiting for May to teach something to Noa and the other apes, and for them to get all fascinated and have like, an animal reaction. That never really happened. The closest moment to that was when she switches on the lights in the bunker and the apes whoop and stumble around confusedly. Or when Noa learns to curse. đ« Also, the apes donât have any kind of interesting reaction when May murders the other human of her own kind. They just stand there, looking sort of surprised, while dramatic music plays and May looks stressed. It felt like that shouldâve been a moment where the apes realize something profound or scary about humanity (that sheâd turn on her own so quickly,) or respond to her like they might an alpha-animal who just killed a challenger, or something like that. But that doesnât really happen.
The movie was kind of full of moments like that, where it felt like they were building toward something profoundâŠand then concluded on a vague or undecided note. Can humans and apes live side by side? âŠWe donât know. Was Caesar using apes for his own gain, or was he a noble elder? We donât know. (Well, we do, but the main characters donât.) Was May just trying to re-establish a communicating human community, or are she and the other humans out to retake the apesâ world? We donât know.
Other random notes:
The cinematography was really good. There were moments where I felt like I was standing in the scene, or like I was on a ride at Disney World that believably sprays you in the face with water even though itâs a virtual environment, or pumps the smell of trees into the room to make you feel like youâre there. I donât know what it was about the way this was shot, but I felt like I could feel the sun, and the wind, and smell the rain, etc. I actually canât remember the last time a movie made me feel that way, so the cinematography was great. The animation is good, too, despite the uncanny valley ape faces.
I canât decide if I like Noa. I could tell they were being very protective of the value of slow pacing, and maybe that âfeel-like-youâre-inside-the-screenâ cinematography was meant to help with this, but I also felt like they were trying to make us feel like we were vicariously on Noaâs long, scary, melancholy adventure with him. It was definitely supposed to be an epic-scale coming-of-age for that ape character.
But I was a little bored. I didnât need to see him walk from one end of a field of vision to the other every single time he entered a new area. (Especially not when heâs just walking, or worse, sitting on a horse whoâs just walking. When heâs an ape. And all you want to do is see him climb and swing and flip.) I also thought the actor did a really good job of emoting, but there were so many scenes of him choking on blood after a hard fall or a fight, or crying, or gazing sadly into the middle distance for a long time. It was like, âI get it. I donât need so much of this.â
Also, there were things I didnât care about emotionally that I felt like I should have, in order to empathize with Noa. First off, his father and his fatherâs death. Noa made lots of anxious expressions and clearly wanted to please his father, I guessâŠbut there wasnât really an indication that his father was a tough guy to please. Or that they were super close. We didnât get enough scenes with the father before he died to make us feel emotion that would carry us all the way through Noaâs journey, in my opinion. Even his two best friendsâI felt like they were building up to some thematic thing about growing up together, doing everything together, etc. But they didnât. That sort of went nowhere.
I also felt like the most compelling parts of the movie were when May had not yet revealed herself to be intelligent, and Noa didnât like herâŠbut they were slowly starting to trust and understand each other. When she stands up and calls his name, that was my favorite part of the movie. Not because it was a great callback to the impactful, iconic âThe Animal Spokeâ moments of Caesar. But because it was her, a dumb brute, learning to trust and rely on this alien-like creature that was so much smarter than her, and building that dynamic.
It was just that I was missing âanimal interacts with humanâ fascination. But then it turns out theyâre both human. Noa is just hairy and strong, and May is not.
Also I didnât love the whole spin they took to communicate ânature over unnatural progressâ with Proximus. I get it. The eagles are symbolic of nature and living in harmony with it. Proximus is symbolic of trying to cheat nature and jump the gun unnaturally. But Iâm a Christian. I donât find anything compelling, inherently, about the idea that itâs ânatureâ that causes us to âevolveâ to what weâre âmeant to be.â It also doesnât even make sense within the context of these movies. You canât have it both ways. You canât have the reason apes become super intelligent and free be a non-natural drugâŠand still say that the non-natural drug was a bad choice with world-ending consequences. Which is it? Try to control nature? Or donât? Because if you donât, the apes still get treated like dumb brutes and rounded up for experimentation. And Alzheimerâs is never cured. But if you do, yes the brutes get freedom, but all of humanity goes through a brutal virus, your fatherâs suffering is prolonged, and your girlfriend tells you âsome things arenât meant to be tampered with.â
So like, which is it? Should the vault be opened and shared with the apes? Or should the eagles knock the mean unnatural King Ape off the cliff? I donât know.
I donât love that the movie ends with so much of that. But I guess it had to. Thats the logical next step of a series that is about a new species continually growing to be more human, and itâs the next step for setting up the next phase.
So thatâs how I felt about all of that! Thanks for asking. Maybe I will talk about Koba someday.

Somewhere In Ape Heaven
Koba: I knew it, that Noa was a trouble maker from the start! Rocket: Don't look at me, Koba. He gets it from Caesar. Maurice: He was only trying to his clan back home safely Bad Ape: If other apes find out Noa protect a human female, they will shun and exile him. Cornelia: Not to mention he won't have a mate or a clan of his own. Koba: No, your great grandson had to FALL IN LOVE WITH A HUMAN! Caesar: (secretly enjoying the fact Noa chooses a human, but must keep up appearances even in the afterlife) NO! Everyone & Nova: (stares at him in surprise)

[I look after you.] [POTA headcanons!]

Summary: Random acts of service I think each ape would do for you!
Characters: Caesar, Noa, Koba, Maurice Rocket, Blue eyes, Lake, Cornelius, and Dar.
Warnings: Caesar and Noa's are meant to be romantic. Dar and Cornelius are platonic as well. The others could be read as platonic or romantic, though!
A/N: These are all just random thoughts I've had today. Some will be shorter than others due to just how many characters I tried to include, so bare with me!

Caesar has a sixth sense as to when you're gonna get hurt, it's uncanny.
Humans are clumsy and more fragile than others, he knows as such because of his grandfather and Will, seeing them trip and fall over nothing, stub their toe and curse, it's almost as if they didn't have spatial awareness at times.
His reflexes are faster than his words.
So he knows when you're about to slam your forehead full force into a wooden beam, immediately throwing a hand up to soften the blow.
You instinctually let out an "Ow!" Before realizing you're okay, your mates warm hand against your skin. The Chimp raises an eye bridge up at you, looking towards you and then his hand.
"Oh."

Koba doesn't do anything nice for you without the expectation that you will do something for him in return.
One thing he will do is protect you against yourself, mainly out of pure pity.
Your center of gravity is different than his, and the woods are not meant for you, so get used to Koba yanking you back from a steep drop.
He isn't gentle about it, fist curled into your jacket and roughly dragging you backward, letting out a shrill against his knowledge.
You knock against his chest, his body immediately giving off its warmth to your own.
You're too scared to look up at Koba, knowing damn well he's gonna be glaring down at you, a comment ready to go.
Unfortunately for you, he does it regardless if you meet his gaze or not.
"Should have. Let you fall." He growls, hoping you can't somehow feet his heartbeat pumping out of his chest.

Noa enjoys caring for you, making your life easier by any means necessary, whether it be by learning how to make you tools that help you fish easier, cooking your meat for you, knowing that your anatomy is different, to teaching you to the best of his ability how to hunt more efficiently.
It's his love language, not that he'd be aware of it. It makes him feel like a good mate, and that boosts his ego.
He gets so mad if you try and wave him off, scoffing at the thought of you not needing him.
What do you mean you're fine on your own? Nuh uh.
Has pouted before and got huffy if you get off of your horse without him helping you down, turning his back to you childishly as he sighs as long as possible.
I hate him.

Maurice lets you cuddle into him for warmth. His fur is longer than the others, and he runs warm. He worries for you when the winters get rough. There's only so much they can do other than set a fire up and wrap you with animal hides.
Sometimes, it's not enough, and shivering yourself to sleep isn't fun.
Maurice considers you family, being the first first ape to truly take you in, he'd never turn you away from when you need him most.
Never needing permission, you quietly make your way to the Orangutan's nest, trying your best not to step on any leaves or branches.
Gingerly taking your time to settle next to Maurice, lowering your body down.
Taking a glance at Nova resting on his other side, you don't catch his eyes peering open, a hand coming up to sign slowly.
'Come.'
Lifting a long arm, he allows you to curl into his side, finally granting you a good night's rest.

Blue eyes always makes sure you're apart of the conversation, if he and Ash are goofing around, and you're standing off to the side, he's gonna immediately poke small fun at you to get your attention.
The second he has it, he's gesturing you over to their little circle at the camp fire, asking you what humans think of whatever subject they're talking about.
Baby Blue will shove his shoulder into Ash if he tries to make fun of you, knowing well that you may not take it as friendly banter just yet.

If you're gonna be with the colony, you'll need a protector, and who else is a better, more loyal one than Rocket.
No ape is being disrespectful towards you on his watch, you're important to Caesar and while that was in fact originally the reason he made it a point to keep an eye on you, he's come to love you himself.
An Ape comes up to you, asking something wildly inappropriate?
Rocket gets up in their face, making direct eye contact and puffing out his chest for them to back the fuck off, daring them to make a move, all while making sure you're well hidden behind himself.

Lake enjoys braiding your hair for you, the different texture offering a welcome challenge compared to her own.
She's so gentle and light handed, her fingers weaving the strands to the best of her ability, fingers much too large.
It's a bonding experience between the two of you, her downtime, after working with the little ones for hours previously.

The littlest ape prince is no stranger to clinging on to you at any point in time. Even as he grows older and gets to be too heavy to sit on your lap or climb up your back, he does it anyway. Wrapping his arms around your neck and hiding his face against your skin.
He does it when looking for comfort, but also for when he's being a little shit and his dad is searching for him to chastise.
Cornelius knows that when you're near, you're gonna spoil and baby him, and that's exactly what he wants, hiding behind you.
He is observant like his father, always in tune with your emotions and knows when you need to have company so you don't stew in your own head.
Drags you off to play with the other apes, not taking no for an answer even if you try to. He pulls those puppy dog eyes and it's damn near impossible to deny him.

Taking on a motherly role for you comes with ease, Dar slipping into it once Noa vouches for you.
She makes sure to take you under her wing, teaching you their ways of life in the a view point of an elder, not just Noas.
Please don't imagine that she'd make you your own shawl, matching her own, literally don't bc I teared up.
She'd be ecstatic to see you wear it around the colony, staring at you. She's so proud of you from how far you've come.
Dar will blatantly introduce you to others as her child, no matter what another ape says. Which wouldn't be much to begin with, became who is gonna argue with her? She won't hear a word of it, waving them off.

Characters below includes: Ceasar, Noa, Anaya and Soona ( The Trio babey. ), Blue Eyes, Koba. Prompt: You've gone Berry Foraging. How would the scenario play out with each characters? Rating: T. ( Some language, primarily in Koba's LOL. ) Caesar.

The sun felt good against your skin now that you had shed your jacket, leaving you delectably exposed to the clean air. Caesar found it difficult not to watch how your shoulders move when you worked, when you shifted next to him to dive inwards towards the blackberry bush in front of the two of you. As simple as an activity it was, and as easy as it was for the Ape King to pin the task on someone else, to have you escorted to the Red Woods to pick berries, he did relish in the mild silence that surrounded the two of you as you intently placed your fingers against a vine and inspected it for ripeness, bringing it ever so closer to your face as your eyes narrowed at it. The way your mouth opened as you muttered to yourself, saying that it wasnât ready before seeking another vine to inspect⊠Caesar found it difficult to actually focus on finding his own to pick. Like he would know how. Like he actively came foraging with the female Apes when they came out once a week in a group. Huffing to himself at that, he was careful to watch you.
You were surely faster than he was, deducing that the vine you had turned your attention to was more than good and you began plucking them berries off one by one, placing them delicately into the basket that was between your bent knees as you had crouched down to inspect the berry bush properly. Admittedly⊠This was something that Caesar had not done for years.
Well, at least since the Colony first took hold and he was demanded to be stationary there in case danger arose. Always easier to be in the same spot than to be missing in action and having tens of Apes out in the woods on horseback looking for their leader. Now, with Blue Eyes coming to age, and with the assistance from Rocket and Maurice, Caesar was able to take in moments like this, laced intricately with his favorite type of intimacy.
âNo, no,â Your hands were suddenly grabbing at his own, the touch itself setting Caesarâs calloused hands alight as you grasped at them and pulled them towards you, âDo you see here?â Your pointer finger gestured at a berry at the very top of the vine that Caesar had figured was okay to pick at. Obviously not as you explained to him in a gentle voice, one that he would drown in if he was allowed, âTheyâre still a little green. Not ready yet.â
Were⊠Were you⊠telling him how to do this? Caesar narrowed his eyes, brow pulling in on itself as he looked at you, perplexity written completely over his expression. He chortled at that- At someone telling him what to do, how to actually do something correctly.
âLook here,â Lifting a hand up, you placed it against his bicep as your other hand reached and grasped it considerately as to not place any damage to it, âSee how theyâre colored? Darker?â Caesar looked at what you were referring to and gave a slight nod. Smiling at him, you squeezed where your grasp was placed on his body before pushing both hands forward and plucking the berries off with content, âThatâs the color you want. Otherwise theyâre going to be too bitter to eat. I donât know any Ape who would enjoy that.â
Caesar tried to follow suit, almost mimicking your body language as he fell into a deeper crouch, inspecting the bush for what you had in turn told him to seek.
âKoba,â He said suddenly, the brazen and deep baritone of his vocals drawing you in without any regard for your other senses. He knew you liked to joke, in fact, Caesar found himself more prone to do just that when alone with you and it was a great way to put you at ease, to put you in a good mood - Or, if flirtatious in nature, enough to get you to lay with Caesar. This joke fell into the âgood moodâ category as he finished his statement, âKoba would enjoy.â
That made you snicker, nodding in agreement. Caesar felt entranced momentarily as the sun caught your hair, giving the impression that you were ablaze as your gaze reached his own and you laughed in return, âBitter berry for bitter Ape.â Noa, Anaya and Soona.

There were tears very visible at the corner of your eyes. Noa felt a small sense of panic wash over him at the expression, how you looked down at your feet in absolute defeat. Rested right in front of you were the remains of the berries you were so careful to pick, so careful to clean as you placed them in the wickered basket, scattered all along the floor of the woods. Now covered with mud and sediment and you were on the very verge of crying as a result. Anaya hadnât meant to - He apologized the moment it happened, the moment the basket hit the ground and you let out a rather startling yap. Anaya swore to Noa he was just playing around, hiding behind a tree in a bid to scare you. In fact, your hands were still dangling mid-air out of shock like you were still holding the basket. Soona was silent next to Noa, her eyes looking between the raspberries and you, wondering why you were having this reaction. She then turned her attention to Noa in hopes that maybe he could translate. Unfortunately, for all three Apes, there was no clear translation. The look Noa gave her, the look Noa gave Anaya, biting around the edges but never enough to ruin a friendship, told them to back off slightly. You spoke - alerting all three of them that you were still there, not completely lost in the abandonment the poor berries must have felt being on the ground. âMy⊠rasp⊠berriesâŠ.â Shaking in tone, Noa tried to flank you so he could see your face but your chin was dipped and your eyes were now tracing the shapes the berries made. A few of them, in your mind at least, looked like a poorly drawn flower. You swallowed softly and looked at Noa with a distressed gaze, âTheyâre all gone.â Anaya yipped, âSorry---â Noa placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head. Removing his hand just as quickly as it was placed, Noa reached down and grasped the basket in front of you, crouching on all four in front of you to obscure the vision of your now wasted forage. The pads of his fingers lined the wickered basket, catching here and there against the rough nature of his skin as he attempted to hand it back to you, his arm extending before dropping at the crushed visual of your face. The twist in his stomach was incredibly uncomfortable as the basket was placed on the ground and suddenly, Noa was encapsulating your entire vision. He placed a hand to your cheek first, caressing the smoothness of your skin before bringing his head in to rest against your own to comfort you. You didn't move in response and Noa took a step forward in a bid to captivate your attention. âA⊠A lot of bushes here, can pick more.â A small sniffle hit your nose as you nodded in agreement, suddenly aware of your mated loveâs closeness. Of course there were more. You were in the middle of the woods, your favorite spot in fact, and were surrounded by many bushes, riped, lush for the picking and taking.
You sniffled again, finally breaking the awkward stance you were holding and raised a hand to wipe the underside of your nose before you grasped Noaâs forearms, beckoning him nearer, to keep him close to you so you could have a speckled moment of privacy in front of Anaya and Soona, who were entangled in their own argument about the entire situation. You could vaguely make out Soona telling Anaya to apologize again. âT-They were for you,â Noaâs eyes widened at the declaration and with that, he held you a bit closer, almost to the point where it felt like a headache was forming where your foreheads were cusped. âI picked them for you, you-you really like raspberries and we-we never have enough at dinner and I---â Anaya shifted towards you and Noa, looking at his friend first who stepped aside slightly. Anaya offered you the basket that was against his back, half full. He never went back with a full one, often picking some out to eat while plucking subsequent berries from the bush and often indulged on the journey back to the Clan. He gave you a gracious smile, extending his arm out with the basket. âCan⊠can take Anayaâs.â Swallowing gently, you grabbed his basket delicately and gave him a half-hearted smile as he apologized under his breath again, âTh⊠Thank you.â Noa watched the encounter and softened his gaze at that. Just one more thing; the Eagle Clan leader stepped forward and lightly brought his thumb along the top of your right cheek to catch a tear from falling. You smiled slightly at him, looking down at Anayaâs basket and finding yourself maniacally entranced in laughter.Â
âHe ate all the raspberries.â Blue Eyes.

Cornelius was so⊠Small. You tilted your head at that thought, hands full of fuzzy blackberries. You found it difficult at the moment to find a better description. But, it was beyond true. The berries in your hand found a home in the basket in front of you. Incredibly cute and so very small. Fragile, almost. That was not the case at all; if anyone even looked at the baby Chimp with the wrong indentation, Blue Eyes was prone to attack out of protectiveness. Watching with bated breath, Cornelius brought himself to cling a little further closer to his older brother, splatted along his back as Blue Eyes was crouched next to you, Ash on the other side. They had gotten you to go fishing, it was only fair you got them to go berry picking.
The added bonus? Cornelius was under Blue Eyesâ care today, and the little stow-a-way was eating the berries right out of the basket that his older brother was trying to fill. You chuckled at that, watching the small frame dip himself down Blue Eyes arm, onto the ground and then quite literally, into the basket itself. The quaint hoots and small howl at a blueberry warmed your heart, but the absolute chaos of Blue Eyes' gaze on his baby brother was universally known. Wise older brother, annoying little brother who got in the way. It was not more evident than in the moment as Blue Eyes grasped him softly, placing him outside of the basket before Cornelius jumped right back in. A growl escaped the older of the two before he repeated it and signed at his brother, âstayâ with one hand. Smiling at him when he made eye contact with you, you were flushed and eager to turn your face back towards the action of your hands.
Funny how that worked. Sibling annoyance was truly known across all creatures. Smiling at the Ape Prince when he made eye contact with you, you were flushed and eager to turn your face back towards the action of your hands. Pulled into a state of lulling day-dreams, you slid your fingers along the vines that held the berries and found a mild prickle sitting at the base of your spine when Blue Eyesâ fingers brushed against yours when you went for the same bunch. You apologized quietly, letting him have his fill, Corneliusâ small eyes watching the berries fall into the basket with intensity. He raised his hands to grab one but Blue Eyes simply ignored it as if it were second nature to deflect the annoyance that rose when Cornelius ended up in his way. Truly siblings, you thought to yourself with a small chuckle.
You were being nudged--- Humming under your breath, your focus turned to Ash who was peering down at your basket with focused intent. You blinked, swinging yourself back into reality, right out of the nice thoughts of Blue Eyes and his baby brother. Wh--- You blinked again, the munching sounds overtaking all of your senses as Cornelius shoved the freshly picked blackberry into his mouth before looking up at you. When did he get there? How long were you daydreaming? There was a mild stare down between yourself and the younger of the two brothers. It felt like you were enthralled in each otherâs presence but it was quickly shot down when Blue Eyes finally took notice and pulled his baby brother out of your basket and placed him back onto his shoulder silently.
âSorry.â Blue Eyes signed at you, digging into his basket and placing a few of his berries into your own as recognition that Cornelius had eaten some of your own. His were okay to eat, but yours? Off limits.
Koba.

âHuman,â The gruff nature of Kobaâs voice was more than grating enough to take you out of the quiet day-dream you had going in your head as your fingers were quick to push blueberries off their twig home and into a basket laying beside you. Groaning to yourself, you dropped your head before looking up at the Bonobo who had been so graciously blessed by Caesar to take you into the woods to forage for berries. He didn't even bother to dis-mount his stallion and rested on it for the last thirty minutes. âAlmost done?â
This was the fifth time he asked you if you were ready to leave in the last ten minutes. Your patience felt like it was teetering between an insane breakdown, which you resisted waging that yelling at Koba was not going to earn you any favors, and quite aggravation. You drove with the second choice and smiled sarcastically at him, âDo you think my answer is any different than it was two minutes ago?â Silently, Koba fell back on his saddle, the action in itself rather reminiscent of a child who wanted to leave the grocery store but was placed in the shopping cart of a prison to ride the remainder of the trip in disappointment. Without a doubt, he was going to have words with Caesar about this later, figuring it to be just a punishment for causing mutiny without a abandonment. You laughed at that to yourself, knowing that Kobaâs complaints were going to fall of deaf ears.
Bothersome silence ensued beyond your capacity. It felt bubbling, the way that he looked at you with his one good eye. The sweep against your entire body as you moved to another bush, content with what you had foraged from the previous. The glare against the back of your head as you began diligently working the new bush. You quipped sarcastically at him, looking at the berries in your hand before letting them slide down your palms into the basket, âYou know what would make me go faster?â
Koba tilted his head in thought, though you knew what he was thinking with reckless care. Heâd surely say something like âyou⊠to be deadâ or a rather clever âKoba⊠threatening youâ. Smiling at the sudden wash of familiarity at the fact that despite his best efforts, you knew how he could respond, the grin you gave him was more than shit-eating as you grumbled, âIf youâd get off your horse and help me. I need to fill the basket.â
The narrowing of his expression was something you could write a book on. The tense nature of his muscles, gleaming it seemed as the sun vibrated off his fur, the permanent scowl of his brow and mouth. Koba had to be the metaphorical poster child for âhuman haterâ. Not that it was a problem most days, but right now, you wanted to be left in some semblance of peace to pick your berries without having to hear him complain over and over again about wanting to go back to the Colony. Without his absolutely relentless dry inquiries about whether you were done or not. He hummed - deep in his chest and the sound was brutal to your ears. âKoba does notâŠâ
The grimace on his face tempted you to double over in laughter, but you were positive that would be interpreted as a threat and youâd be pinned to a nearby tree with his teeth in your jugular. Bringing your knees together, you bounced in your squatting position and looked up at him, almost asking with your eyes to finish his statement. âKoba⊠does not⊠pick berries.â No shit, you wanted to say but refrained. You filed away the response to be used at a moment when you were around others who would ensure your safety. âJust thought Iâd throw the option out there. If two of us were doing it, we could go back in like⊠Ten minutes.â
There was no processing your words, or at least, there was no clear indication that Koba actually considered them. More often than not, they slid right off him and he just ignored them, preferring to sit in petulant silence which was exactly what he was doing. With one more look at the Ape, you proceeded forward and found pleasure in how your fingers moved around the bush to find what you were seeking, all too aware of the heated scrutiny you were now being surveyed under. Looking right into his eyes, you smiled viciously as you popped a berry into your mouth and chewed painstakingly slow. For sure, you thought to yourself with a chortle, Caesar was going to hear about this from Koba.
