Carl Grimes x GN! Reader
You watched the boy who had your heart walk away from you, leaving you alone in the bed. With a sigh you get up to follow him, watching as he stands in front of the mirror of the bathroom. Wrapping your arms around him from behind, he turns to look at you slightly before turning back to his reflection, his covered eye giving him a silent complex.
“Come back to bed,” you say softly to Carl, though your request seems to fall on deaf ears. He continues to mess with his bandage, it obviously causing him discomfort.
“Carl,” your words cause him to pause and look at you in the mirror.
“Yeah?”
“What’s wrong?” He lets out a quiet exhale and responds in a quiet and gruff tone.
“Nothin’”
“Bullshit,” he raises his eyebrow at you before turning around, his back to the mirror now as he looks down at you. He’s studying your face, for reasons you’re unsure of, but you continue to look up at him. Reaching up to brush hair from his face, your hand then rests down to his cheek, caressing it gently. Carl tenses up slightly since he’s nervous with how close your fingers are to his scar. Noticing this you rest your hand to his shoulder, before standing on your tip toes and pressing a soft kiss to his lips. He rests his hand down to your waist, kissing you back tenderly.
“Come back to bed,” you whisper against his lips. He pulls you into him, craving to be closer to you. He presses a soft kiss to your forehead before pulling away from you, mumbling a quiet ‘okay’.
Crawling back into bed and under the covers, you roll over to face him, Carl laying on his side towards you. You move to be in his arms, forcing your way there if you had to, although Carl didn’t mind, and he wrapped his arms around you, stroking your hair. With a glance up to him, you murmur quietly to him.
“You know, you’re really pretty.” Your words make him pause his movements, making him sigh slightly before continuing to run his fingers through your hair.
“You get like this every time you’re tired.” It was true, you wouldn’t stop talking whenever you were exhausted, and poor Carl had to deal with it nearly every night. You move even closer to him- if that was even a possibility, curling up to his side.
“But it’s true, you are.”
“I’m not. You are, but I am not.” You roll your eyes exasperated, why couldn’t he just take a compliment?
“Fine then, you’re handsome.”
“That's not what I meant,”
“You’re hot,”
“Stop it, go to bed.”
“But you are,” “Shush.” With a soft smile playing on your lips you lean your head back down against his chest, whispering to get the last word in.
“You are really hot though,” he quietly groans and turns you away from him, making you drop your jaw slightly. He bites back a smile, still not bringing you back into his arms, although when you slowly inch closer to him he doesn’t pull back. Carl brings his head down to yours, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head, as he murmurs, “I love you.” As much as he hated to admit, you had a way of bringing light into his life like no one else could, a way of making him believe the things you say to him, like the compliments.

Carl Grimes x GN! Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Carl grows concerned about you since you guys arrived in Alexandria.
Warnings: language
Pronouns: they/them
«────── « ⋅ʚ♡ɞ⋅ » ──────»
Getting adjusted to new environments wasn’t easy, especially for you. Ever since the prison fell apart, your group has been placed to place every night. You’re exhausted. Then, you were invited to a community called Alexandria
After Rick told the group we’re settling here, you were relieved but uneasy. You didn’t completely trust anyone that wasn’t your family. You held all of your trust in your loving boyfriend, Carl Grimes.
“Hey,” a hand waved in front of your face, pulling you out of your thoughts. “Are you alright?” Carl questioned.
“Oh yeah sorry, I’m good.” Reassuring him. He nods and he turns his direction back to his dad, Rick Grimes, who was holding a meeting for a scavenge.
“Glenn, I’m gonna have you be a getaway driver, you’re good with a wheel.” Rick began looking at Glenn who responded with a nod. “Daryl, I want you to keep watch for anyone or anything who is a threat.” Daryl hummed toward Rick. “And Carl, you’re with me. I’m gonna need help gathering supplies and taking out walkers.” Rick finished and started to wrap up the meeting, leaving you confused.
“Wait, what about me?” You sat up from the table gaining his attention. “I don’t know, Y/N. You’ve been-“ “C'mon, Dad. y/n is one of the best at runs. They barely leave with a mark. Plus, they say you have bad luck without them there.” Carl cut him off. You looked at Rick hoping he’d have you tag along. Carl was right, you were the best at getting in and out at scavenged fast. He signed in defeat. “Alright, fine, you’re with me and Carl.” After that, everyone got ready and headed out of the Alexandrian walls.
———————————
After driving out for what felt like forever, you arrived at an abandoned Pharmacy that didn’t look like it had been touched. Me, Carl, and Rick stepped out of the car while Glenn stayed. Daryl helped us clear out the walkers outside the building while Carl and Rick took care of the ones inside. While they did that, I scanned the area to make sure no one else was there.
“We’re clear,” I spoke towards the Grimes. With that, we went around the store looking for supplies we needed. Deanna gave you the list earlier. You were walking around the isles and suddenly stepped on glass, it was a mirror. “Shit.” You whispered to yourself then you saw yourself in the mirror. Your eyes were red.
The state you were desperate to hide is now noticeable: Exhaustion.
“Hey, are you okay?” Carl questioned. You looked up at him, not thinking about him seeing your eyes. “Yeah I just stepped on glass and it startled me, that’s all.” You walked past him continuing your hunting for the supplies, leaving Carl concerned. “Carl, did you find- what’s going on?” Rick asked putting a hand on Carl’s shoulder making the boy turn to the man. “Nothing, Y/N is just acting a little strange today.”
“How so?” Rick asked. “Well, I caught them spacing out during the meeting and just now, they brushed off my question and I noticed their eyes.” After Carl stated that, Rick started to walk towards you, “Y/N,” you turned towards the grown man. “I want you to sit in the car with Glenn.”
“What?! Why?!” You said with an angered tone. “Because I said so, now go.” Rick pointed towards the car. You scoffed and left the store.
“What was that for? They didn’t do anything!” Carl shouted making Rick turn and walk towards him. “Don’t yell. We don’t want to draw attention to ourselves. Let’s just finish up in here and get home.” Carl sighed, continuing to help out his dad.
———————————
“Carl, let’s go, the sun is going down and we still have a long drive ahead of us,” Rick said grabbing the bag of all of the supplies they found. Daryl came out of hiding once Rick announced they were done. “Ya got what we need?” Daryl spoke. “Let’s hope. Deanna wasn’t too specific. Let’s head out.” Daryl hummed in response and hopped onto his motorcycle and started the engine waiting for Carl and Rick to get into the car behind him.
Carl hopped into the back seat and saw you. Your head was leaning against the window. He slightly shook your shoulder and noticed you were asleep. Rick got into the passenger seat and turned his head looking at you and back at Carl. “Thank god. Alright, Glenn, let’s get the hell out of here.” With that, Glenn started the car and drove off with Daryl leading.
After a few minutes on the road, Carl broke the silence. “Dad, why did you look at Y/N and said, “thank god?” He spoke. “Don’t worry, it’s nothing,” Rick responded, looking ahead. With that, Carl started to get angry.
“Worry?! I’m concerned! Y/N has been acting weird all day and you’ve been a complete dick to them for no reason!” Yelling at his dad, making Rick turn toward him. “If you’re concerned, maybe you shouldn’t raise your voice while they're sleeping right next to you!” Rick whispered yelling at his son. “Just cut the shit! Tell me! What is wrong with MY partner?!” silence filled the air, so quiet Carl could hear your breathing. “Rick,” Glenn interrupted. “Carl needs to know. He is Y/N’s boyfriend.”
Here’s the thing, Rick sees you as family, especially since you are dating his son and are still a kid to him. He’s secretive for the right reasons, and that’s to protect his loved ones. But, he knew Carl would be able to help you in this situation.
“Y/N…hasn’t been sleeping, at all,” Rick admitted. Carl sat there, waiting for context. “I don’t know why, but I’ve noticed them taking night watch hours on end and even taking others' places. Anything to avoid sleep, they’d do it.” Rick took a breath. “And, when you mentioned their eyes, I knew it had gone on for too long.” He finished.
Carl signed. How could he not have noticed his own lover was struggling?
“Thank you for telling me,” Carl responded after a minute of silence. Carl looked over at you, who was still sleeping. He moved your head to lay it on his shoulder, hoping it would make you relax more than the car window. Relief fell over him when he felt your breathing against his neck, you were finally getting some rest. Then, you started to snore.
“Woah! Didn’t know they snored!” Glenn giggled. Making Rick cackle as well. Carl smiled, “Hey! It’s never this bad!” He jokingly defended. “Just be happy they haven’t heard you. Their usually a light sleeper.” With that response, the grown men quickly shut up. Before this, if anyone would wake you up, hell broke loose.
———————————
You guys arrived back in Alexandria, it was around 11 p.m. Daryl parked his motorcycle and waited for you, Rick, and Carl. Glenn said his good nights to everyone and headed towards his shared house with his wife, Maggie. Everyone was out of the car, except you.
“I’ll wake them up-“ “hell no, man. Are you asking for an ass beatin’?” Daryl intruded on Rick stopping his hand from touching you. “Well, what do you want me to do? Let them sleep in a car that’ll grow humid?” Rick spoke with sarcasm. “I got it,” Carl spoke up.
He then started to lift you up from the back seat and started to carry you, supporting your back and knees. Your body began to adjust to the position and you rested your head on his shoulder. Carl then started to walk towards the front door. “Strong kid,” Daryl spoke to Rick once Carl took you into the house. “like father like son.”
After carrying you up the stairs, he walked into your room and settled you in bed. He removed your socks and shoes and pulled the blanket over you. Once you were settled, he kissed your forehead goodnight and started to leave.
“Carl..?” He turned around and saw you half awake. He thought you looked so cute in that state but he knew you needed sleep. “Hey, it’s okay, just go back to sleep.” He whispered softly putting a hand on your cheek. “Sleepover? Please?” You muffled, holding his hand on your cheek, looking at him with sleepy eyes. He grinned, “How could I ever say no to that face?”
Carl got comfortable and stepped into bed with you. He put his arm over you, spooning you. “I’m sorry…” you whispered. “Don’t apologize, hun. We’ll talk in the morning, okay? Just go to sleep.” You hummed in response and you fell asleep. He kissed your cheek, “Goodnight, my Y/N”
————————————
“Here you go. Got what you needed.” Rick handed the bag of supplies in front of Deanna. She went through the bag and looked at Rick with confusion. “How did you manage to get nothing on the list?” Rick also got confused. “Wait, what list?” “The list I gave to Y/N. They said you shouldn’t have the list because you have bad luck.” Deena chuckled at the end. “I guess you could say that.”

A Tree and Lake
Fandom: The Walking Dead
Tumblr media
Pair: Carl Grimes x gender neutral reader
Tw: Probably spelling mistakes, not proof read, implications of death, no walkers mentioned, dreams of a dead loved one, pre-established relationship, Death, grave sight, nickname (my love), and sad with a hint of fluff.
Pronouns: None used
Key:
(Y/n) - Your name
Tumblr media
Y/n’s POV
“Come on get out of bed.” Carl told me playfully . “I can’t, not yet.” I said with a smile. “If you don’t I will make pancakes and eat them all by myself.” He exclaimed and began to walk down stairs as I sat up and walked down stairs. “Smells good.” I murmured walking behind him and hugging him. “I know I’m making it.” He said proudly.
“What’s got you being so cocky?” I asked tilting my head as I walked away. “Nothing I just miss you.” He said as I looked down. “Right.” I muttered as he sat down next to me and I laid my head on his lap. He played with my hair and I hummed softly. “It’s almost time for you to go.” He told me and I looked up at him.
“I don’t want to Carl.” I said as he smiled at me and sat me up and kissed my forehead. I’ll be right here when you fall asleep I promise my love.” He said happily, I began to tear up. “Please don’t make me.” I begged him, he held my hands. “I’m sorry (Y/n). Wake up.” He said and I did.
I was all alone in my bed. It was cold. I curled in on myself and cried. I heard soft knocking, my door creaked a second later, followed by a kid. “Yeah Daryl?” I asked and he sat next to me on my bed. “We found a place for him.” He told me and I sat up.
“I’ll be there in second let me get dressed.” I told him and he walked out of my room closing the door behind him. I sighed when I was done changing and saw his hat. I put it on then my shoes, walked out my front door. I saw Rick and Daryl there as they walked me to the spot.
It was by a tree near the lake. I smiled softly as they left me and I sat by the tree. I laid and I took off his hat and setting it on top of the freshly placed dirt.
“Ya know I dream about you every night. I don’t know if it’s actually you or just how I remember you. I remember when I met you here, our first date was here, our first kiss…a lot happened here.” I mumbled to myself.
“I’m glad this is your final resting place my love.” I muttered and placed on the dirt and started to doze off. I love Carl Grimes. I hope you always knew that, my cowboy.
Tumblr media
A/n: Hey all idk if this is the second one this month, but I am on my Carl Grimes trend again. I watched the entire show from the time I was 12 until Rick’s “last” episode. I’m 20 now and I still have a thing for Chan Chan (Chandler Riggs). My mom and I have called him Chan Chan since I was 13. I’m glad y’all are still out here keep Carl’s memory alive and somehow know what Carl poppa is. Either way I got a little emotional writing this and I hope you enjoy loves!

pretty boy | c.g
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
loosely inspired by "pretty boy" by the neighbourhood!
genre : fluff !
summary : reader & carl take turns describing how they see eachother in their eyes, or eye in carls case. fluff ensues !
a/n : sorry if this sucks !!! i havent written in forever, so it might be a bit ooc :(
"i have an idea," carl shifted on the carpeted floor, watching judith play with her makeshift toys in the corner of his eye.
"shoot, and not literally," i joke shortly, chuckling as carl seems to stare into my soul with his eye. it's scary how he can do that.
"we should describe eachother. not like how an outsider would see it.. but the way we see eachother. it sounds fun, you in?" he inquires, tilting his head the same damn way his dad does.
"i can go first," he says as i stay silent. i nod my head as an internal battle begins in my head. what if i mess up? what if i say the wrong thing?
"i think you are pretty. and not just outside," he pauses as his voice cracks a bit. he clears his throat to continue, "the way you look at judith like she's your own sister, the way you care for people that dont even know you."
carl seemed to hesitate continuing.
"i can go next," i murmur as my throat seems to close up. the walls felt like they were closing in, but one look into carl's eye and everything was fine again.
i didn't know how to start, so i just decided to act rational and hope for the best.
"you're calm and warm, everything about you is warm," i paused. "i hope that makes sense," i whispered.
"it does," was all carl said. out the corner of my eye, i saw his slender hand snake towards mine. i decided to be oblivious, hoping to make the moment better for him.
i felt the warm skin against my hand, heat flushing to my face as carl smirked. his sideways smile always gave me butterflies.
out the window of carls room, i saw the sun setting down into the horizon line. it was quiet today, no accidents and rick didnt even interrupt them.
i glanced over to judith, she was asleep against the blanket wall we had made for her. she looked peaceful. she always did when she slept.
carl cleared his throat. it seemed like he wanted to say something, but i decided not to push too hard and just stay next to him.
"something is quiet about today," i said after a few deafening moments of silence.
he turned to me slightly, his eye outlined by the ray of light peeking through the window.
"were you.. serious earlier?" he inquired. i wasnt sure what part he meant, i had said a lot earlier. even before the game.
"which part?" i asked, turning towards him slightly. our hands were still intertwined, pinkies holding eachother like we'd held hands before.
"the part where you said i was warm. i have one eye, how can i be warm?" i heard his voice shake ever so slightly.
sometimes i forgot he was just a kid when his eye was shot out.
"yes, i meant it. every part." i whispered tightening my grip on his hand ever so slightly.
a grin grew on his face, that lopsided smile giving me butterflies as always.
"even with one eye, you're gorgeous." i furrow my eyebrows together as his smile grows just a tinge bigger.
— — —
pretty boy, you did this with me, boy. now it's all about to end.
— — —
a/n : i hope you enjoyed ! :)

just a drabble about the loml <333
Tumblr media
****
"Can I paint your nails?" you grin, blinking prettily at your boyfriend. He had been reading comics, nails he'd neglected to cut recently dragging across the drawn pages.
"I- why?" Carl looks over the edge of the Spiderman comic, eyebrows pulled together in a way that makes you wanna kiss the shit out of him. You sigh dramatically and sit up from where you laid on the bed, snatching his comic.
"What the fuck?! Give it back baby" Carl protested, already reaching for the comic you've placed behind you. Tutting your tongue, you grab those outstretched hands and kiss his knuckles. Carls face immediately alights with an adorable blush — maybe you could skip the nail painting and just make out?
"Let me paint them and I'll give it back" You grin as you hold tight to his very pretty hands. He debates internally but decides he really needs to finish that comic; its an issue with black cat and she's really hot, not as hot as you of course but still..
"Ugh okay fine" He pouts, failing at hiding his smile when you laugh victoriously. Picking up the blue nail polish to match your own, you begin painting his nails with such a gentle touch Carl swears you're an angel. Until you, totally by accident, leave a long swipe of the polish on his thumb.
"whoops" you say dryly with an endearing smirk, continuing to paint on the Weezer blue color. Carl just rolls his eyes, leaning forward to kiss your forehead while affectionately calling you a bumbling idiot!
Once the paint dries, you run around to everyone in your guys group and show off his 'pretty nails'. Carl's face burns red while this happens but he can't help but enjoy it, your giggles and smiles making the embarrassment worth it.
****
I would die for him.

STUPID
carl grimes x reader
(you punch negan at the lineup.)
tags: angst, fluff
masterlist here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes, you do things without thinking which was very prevalent during the lineup. Sitting there silently while watching Negan torment and murder your family was complete torture. Coming along on this trip wasn’t supposed to turn out this way. Carl didn’t even want you to go in the first place.
During the lineup, the two of you were separated which somehow made everything much worse. You were sat between Michonne and Abraham. That definitely wasn’t the most ideal position to be in. Directly next to Abraham. You didn’t look, you couldn’t. You knew Carl had probably watched it all to make sure he’d remember it.
You thought it couldn’t get any worse but Negan decided to torment Rosita about it. You knew they had some sort of issue before all of this, that they’d broken up. But it was still cruel and just as hard to watch. Negan thought he was funny. So you clocked him in the jaw which is fair, who wouldn’t?
You were tackled and pinned to the floor as expected, you had heard the others protest while they screamed at Negan’s men telling them you’re just a kid. They weren’t planning on having mercy on you, but Negan did. He scolded you and told you there’d be consequences to your actions. You sometimes wish it was you. Glenn was a huge loss to the group, you couldn’t help but feel like it was your fault.
After everything you thought you’d be given the liberty of going home with your family. But he took you as punishment. He’d told you on various occasions that you were brave. Brave makes a good soldier, so he would try and break you. Turn you into a savior, into Negan. You were under the control of Dwight who locked you in a room and basically starved you, feeding you dog food and made you suffer by repeating songs over and over. He made you spend time with the dead, and that was the next time you’d see Carl.
You saw him through a gate first, he killed some of Negan’s men and that already stressed you out to no end. You were worried about what he’d might do to Carl. You finally got to leave the dead to service Dwight and Negan once again. You held a tray of snacks for the man, it was quite humiliating to say the least. But you were able to see Carl. The look he gave you was heartbreaking. He was so worried to see you there in that state. “Why’s he here?” You ask Negan. He sort of laughed at your question. “Well the last time I checked, that was none of your business. Don’t make me take out the only eye he has.” He teases. So you stay silent, that was probably the first you’d spoken in a while.
Later that day you were able to see him two more times, once during the iron and right before he left back to Alexandria. You knew that if he didn’t have his bandage, Negan had definitely tormented him. Eventually you were back locked into your cell, but not for long because you were soon given the supplies you’d need to leave. So you do, effectively disguising yourself and escaping. You made to ur way back to Hilltop, thanks to Jesus.
There you were well taken care of, you were given a shower and real food. Somewhere to sleep. You had nightmares about the Sanctuary, about Negan and Dwight. It sounds stupid but you were worried, you’d thought about it and realized you were still an escaped hostage, they could look for you at any moment. But that didn’t stop you from wanting to see Carl. Your plan was to leave Hilltop early in the morning to head back to Alexandria. You wake up early and grab a couple things you’d need in a bag. You sneak off to a side wall and before you can start to try to escape, you hear Maggie calling you and Sasha.
You walk further into the settlement to see that the gates are opened and he’s there. Carl is there. You let your bag slide off your back and the both of you make your way to each other’s embrace, still sort of shocked. He hugs you so tightly, tighter than he ever has before. He shoves his face into your neck. “Thank god.” He mumbles against your skin. After a moment you pulled back to look at him. He looks at you a bit wearily as the last time he’d seen you it wasn’t in the best condition. He leans forward and plants a kiss to your forehead, his eyes shut as he feels a wave of gratefulness flood his body.
Soon you guys would be sitting down in Barrington house while you guys caught up. Although, he seemed to be doing most of the talking. You were very silent. “After the Sanctuary…he went back to Alexandria. People died. He took Eugene.” He explains solemnly. He looks at your face for any expression and there is none. “Cmon you gotta say something.” He examines your face and realizes how much pain you’re in.
“I just…I feel so stupid.” You mutter. He tilts his head to get a better look at you. “If i hadn’t done what I did…Glenn would be here. I wouldn’t have gone to the Sanctuary. It was bad Carl it was so bad.” Your voice trails off as tears fill your eyes, you can’t help but cover your face but all you can think of was the cell they’d keep you in, constantly being taunted and picked on.
He immediately went to comfort you, running his hand over your back to calm you down. He wasn’t sure what to say, he didn’t know how to help you. But all he knew was that you needed comfort. He pulled you close, wrapping his arms around you tightly. It was almost like he was telling you that you were safe now.
Negan wouldn’t hurt you again, and he’d make sure of it. “Whatever happens next…you have to sit out.” He tells you, still holding on tightly. You pull back and look at him puzzled. “Sit out?” You sniffle, “This isn’t a game, Carl. This is war.” He breathes in deeply and considers your response, although he can’t agree. “That doesn’t matter to me…but you do.” You shake your head and stand up from the couch.
“That’s unfair. I can fight and I’m going to.” You retort. “No. You’re not. Not like this.” He demands. How doesn’t he understand? You can’t let whatever it was stop you, not now. “Is this for revenge?” He questions. You turn back to look at him with a small glare as he remained on the couch. “If that’s how you want to look at it, yes. But to me it’s justice. Not just for me… but for Abraham and Glenn.” Carl keeps quiet and looks at you intently.
“Even though what happened to Glenn was my fault.” You say sort of quietly, looking. down at your feet. Your words struck Carl hard. So he stood up and forced you to look at him, just to make sure you understood. “That’s not what happened- we were put in a shitty position. None of that should’ve happened anyway.”
You say nothing. It’s hard to feel any other way. Like it wasn’t your fault. Carl took you in his arms anyway, it was probably the most comforting hug you’d gotten since the start of it all. He pulled away from you to hold your face gently in his hands. “If fighting makes you feel better then you can fight. But you have to stay by my side. Can you promise me that…please?” His voice was gentle and reassuring, it really made you feel better.
You nod. “I promise.”

HOME ALONE
Carl Grimes x GN! Reader
Tumblr media
---------- 1.2k words Disclaimers: Slightly suggestive but nothing over-board, making out, awkward teens. Sypnosis: Sneaking into his room. ---------- The only thing heard in the temporarily adult-deserted Grimes abode that evening was the sound of soft scrambled footsteps accompanied by creaks from the houses staircase. Everything inside was still and dark that night, save for you and Carl sneaking into a room together and switching on his bedside lamp's light.
Instantly the appliance brightens up the room with it's own yellow hue, and with this newfound light you're finally able to see the smitten boyish grin on Carl's face. The rush of sneaking you into his room was clearly still fresh in your minds; both of you now feeling a new sort of anticipation and teenage hormonal rush coursing about.
Your eyes tail him as he makes sure to lock the door, no one was supposed to be around for a good while, but it never hurt to be careful. As the door locks with a clearly identifiable clicking noise, you plop your butt down on the bed behind you. Though still sitting up, you lounge back and a bit and allow your fingers to feel the material of his blanket.
Carl's blanket was nice.
Soft and smooth.. your body shifts in attempt to examine the rest of his bed, but your view gets blocked by Carl taking a seat next to you. Not that you minded him interrupting though. You didn't think you could ever get tired of looking at him, as cheesy as it may be to express out loud.
Something about the way his blue eyes held you with complete and utter affection told you that the feeling was mutual.
"Sorry," He breaks the silence with a half-hearted apology that slowly melts into a light embarrassed chuckle. "My room's a bit of a mess." Your gaze flicks around his self-proclaimed "mess" of a room, sure there were a few things visible in the minimal light provided by his lamp that happened to be strewn about; like a shirt resting on the top of a chair. But it wasn't horrible, not worse than what your room looked like sometimes.
"Don't worry about it, I don't mind." You reply softly, eliciting a nod of somewhat relieved acknowledgement from Carl.
And then the awkward silence returns to the room. Neither one of you really quite sure what to say or do with this.. privacy. The two of you had both practically grown up through the apocalypse, consequently neither of you had gotten a chance to explore anything romantically intimate. You'd kissed once before, it was short.. chaste. Neither of you had really been the best at it though. Practice was definitely needed.
The air between you buzzes with a sort of tension you can't quite name, and the seconds drag on and on, feeling longer than they should've.
Suddenly, you feel Carl's fingers brush across yours. His hand is nicely warm as it gently pries your own open and his fingers intertwine with yours. You look upwards at him in time to see smittenness making it's way onto his countenance again.
"So.." He murmurs, leaning in closer to you, close enough that you can feel his breath wafting onto your cheek.
Your heart rate picks up, and you feel your face growing hotter. Here goes nothing, right?
You squeeze Carl's hand a bit with your own as your other one goes up to rest on the back of his head, to which Carl slowly follows suit with by wrapping his arm around your waist. Your eyes flutter closed as your lips finally met his for an experimental first kiss.
You could feel your whole body heating up now as your lips moved a tad sloppily against his, in a strange form of inexperienced passion. Though, sooner than not you break away.
"WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE IM KISSING SOME BUTTCHEEKS!" You break away from the kiss.. letting the compulsive thoughts win.
"UGH! CAN YOU STOP BEING NUTTIER THAN A SQUIRREL TURD!" Carl growls. "WHAT CARL! STOP BEING REDNECK LIKE YOR DADDAHY!!" And then you heard it.
Two bangs, and then three, coming straight from the other side of Carl's door. Quickly the two of you JUMPED UP, in order to look in surprise at the door on the other side of the room, listening to the bangs that continued to happen on the door.
You half expected to hear someone shouting at Carl to open it, but that never happened. In fact, the knob had never even been tried. There was just.. random disorganized banging on the door. Your brows furrow as you look over at Carl, who returns you a look of 'I have absolutely no idea what that is'. The knocks never stop, only growing increasingly louder and violent. You can almost feel yourself getting a bit frightened, was it a walker? Was Alexandria getting overrun again?
You notice Carl getting up from the bed and reaching for his knife, "Be careful..!" You waste no time in whispering back to him as he treads towards the door. As he stands in front of the door, a beat filled with the sound of continued loud thumping passes. And then, quick as ever Carl unlocks the door and throws it open, his knife in hand raised defensively clearly ready for anything.
But nothing's there. Or at least you thought so, because the following thing you hear is the sound of something falling down the stairs. Seriously, what the hell was that?!
And then you hear a high pitched scream. "WAHH! WAHH!! WAH!"
"CARL WHAT IS THAT!" YOU YELL.
"OH SHIT!!" Carl shouts as he quickly jumps out of the door frame area to look down the stairs..
THE BABY CRYING CONTINUES!! AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRCASE.. IS JUDITH ON HER ASS!! THAT LITTLE MF ESCAPED HER CRIB AND WAS TRYNA BUST INTO CARLS ROOM!! NOW SHE WAS UGLY CRYING AND PROBABLY WAKING UP ALL THE ALEXANDRIAN RESIDENTS!!
"AWE.. JUDITH.. ITS OK.. ITS OK!!" CARL TRIES TO CALM HER DOWN BUT IT IS CLEARLY NOT WORKING AS SHE LETS OUT AN ANGRY DEMON SCREECH AND A LOUD SMACK IS HEARD...
"OW!!!!!!!!" CARL SAYS.
THEN JUDITH KEEPS CRYING.
"SHH!! JUDITH SHUTUP!! YOU'RE GONNA GET ME IN TROUBLE!!!" CARL SHOUTS.
"AWE NAW IM NOT TAKING THE FALL FOR THIS!!" YOU SAY VERY PANICKED. "GOTTA GET RID OF THE EVIDENCE!"
YOU RUN OUT OF CARLS ROOM DOOR AND PUSH HIM DOWN THE STAIRS, HOPING HE'LL FALL AND BREAK HIS NECK AND THEN HIS BIG FAT BUTT WILL SUFFOCATE JUDITH AND NO ONE WILL BE AROUND TO WITNESS THAT YOU WERE HERE!! YOU PUT YOUR PALMS ON HIS GYATT AND THEN GIVE THE BIGGEST PUSH OF YOUR LIFE!!
"AH! (NAME)! WHA!!" CARL SCREAMS LIKE A GIRL BEFORE HE GOES ROLLING DOWN THE STAIRS AND THEN HE FALLS RIGHT ONTO JUDITH!! THE STAIRCASE ALMOST BREAKS COMPLETELY FROM UNDER HIM.
YOU DONT WAIT AROUND TO SEE HOW THAT TURNS OUT.. INSTEAD YOU RUN FULL SPEED AT CARLS BEDROOM WINDOW AND THEN JUMPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE GLASS SHATTERS AND YOU HIT THE GROUND WITH A LOUD OOF ON YOR END!
"OH SNIPPITY BIBITY BAP!!" You cry. "MY BUMHOLE!" your butt really hurts because you fell on it.
and then a bright light blinds you!! "OW!" You scream, trying to see... what was happening!! why was it so bright!! and then you realized some bitch was shining a flashlight in your eyes!
YOU COVER YOUR EYES WITH YOUR HANDS... AND YOU MAKE OUT RICK THROUGH THE LIGHT + DARKNESS. oh shit!!
"(Name..) why're yew flyin' out Coral's windohw.." Rick whispers... "nd why is thare a poop next to yer buutt.."
then rick points the flash light down.. and you see a poop.. next to your butt...

Anything to make you happy.
(GUYS I KNOW I’VE BEEN GONE FOR SO LONG, I’M SORRY. MY SCHEDULE KEEPS CHANGING BUT I AM GIVING YOU FUEL FOR NOW. I HOPE YOU ENJOY.)
Pairing: Glenn Rhee x gn! reader.
Request: Him getting you comic books on a run, a cute small lil drabble.
AN: I hope you enjoy this as much as I did writing it. I honestly couldn’t describe how much I like Glenn as a character. He’s so comforting :((
Please keep the requests for him coming in!! I would love to write more for this guy!
Warnings: Nothing too bad. There are general descriptions of an apocalypse and the consequences of one. Little mentions of death (not Glenn or the reader.)
This also might be very long as I like to add in moments between other characters as well as the main one it's centred around, so... Yeah, get yourself comfortable.
Tumblr media
An apocalypse is something people can prepare for depending on the amount of time they have. They can get food supplies, weapons to protect themselves, extra clothes if needed.
But the one thing people don’t think about in that moment... is entertainment.
I mean, sure, if the world was ending right in front of your eyes, having something to do when you were bored wouldn’t really be something that would be on your mind. Except...
What happens when that time does come?
Your group had finally secured a place to stay after moving around for weeks on end. You went from house to house, neighbourhood to neighbourhood, and even in a literal circle because of the events of the farm.
But now you had something.
You had a home.
The only downside, however... was that the place was in fact a prison. Meaning that you had to live whatever life you had left inside a prison cell.
At least in this world, it was optional.
You currently found yourself residing in the cell that you chose. You were sitting on the lower part of one of those bunk beds, with your back leaning into the cool stone wall that the bed was up against.
The answer to the previous question of ‘what happens when the time of boredom comes’ in your case, was reading.
Well, it wasn’t like you just pulled out a full on novel and started following these characters on an emotionally descriptive journey that never left a thought unknown.
They were comic books.
The last contact you have with your previous interests before this whole zombie invasion thing.
You flick onto the next page, wide eyes concentrated and eager as they scan over the action taking place across the smooth paper. An edition of a Batman series you used to follow growing up.
It may have been the same scenario over and over again. You know, some form of evil occurs or someone turns bad, makes a racket, and may even take someone to get Batman’s attention.
But every single time... he gets there.
The moment there is that feeling of success from the evil doers, or that sense of surrender from the hostage taken to rile people up, he appears and fights until things are safe again.
He barely gives up, and even when he does, it just shows you that he’s human. He’s just-
“Y/n, hey,”
When the sound actually caught your ears, you began to blink rapidly. The action scene that was previously playing through your head began to fade away until your focus now landed on a figure that stood in the doorway. Your doorway.
Glenn smiles for a second, waiting for the book in your hand to lower before he continues on, “Uh... Daryl is planning to go on a run in like five minutes? And-- And I’m going to go with him.” the man explains with a few nods of his head as if trying to convince himself of what he was saying.
Now because of an introduction like that, you were expecting some sort of implication, or a reason as to why he was telling you this...
However, nothing else was said.
After staring at the man for at least five more seconds, your eyes narrow, “... Why are you telling me this?” Glenn blinks for a moment. Probably replaying the last few minutes in his head before his eyebrows raise, “Oh, I, uh... Sorry, would you.... Do you want to join us?”
“That’s what I was going to... ask.”
You suppress a smile, giving the guy a few nods of your head in attempts to ease him a little, “Um, I kind of said that I would help Rick with the farming today already... I mean, I can get someone else to do it, I’m pretty sure Carl would--”
“No, no, no, that’s fine! That’s fine!” Glenn suddenly insists with his hands held out in front of him for further emphasis, “That’s-- That’s okay, um...”
“I’ll see you later then, huh?” the guy continues while you watch in amusement, finally letting a smile take over your lips when he looks back one more time, “I hope you enjoy your... Wait, is that-- Is that a Batman comic book?”
Glenn’s entire body twisted in a matter of seconds after the words left his lips, and before you could even properly answer, he was sat down on the bed beside you, taking the book right out of your hands.
“Uh... Yeah, it is,” you confirm regardless of your confused state, just watching as Glenn flipped the book round so that the cover was visible in front of him. “Whoa, it’s in great condition,” he then points out before turning to you with narrowed eyes, “I didn’t know you liked comic books.”
“What?” you question almost instantly while you lean back a little, making Glenn feign fear as he gave them back, “I don’t know! It just-- I mean, no one else here likes comics, apart from Carl.”
“Besides, I’ve never... actually seen you read one... Ever. Not even back at the camp.” he adds on, and you let your fingers lightly graze back and forth across the book spine, “That’s mostly because I’m scared of ruining it.”
“It’s the last connection I have with my previous life.”
You know, whenever the topic of the world before the apocalypse came up, barely any of you had anything to say. It was mostly because it would end up with people having an existential crisis, but what else could you do about it?
There was a sudden sigh that passes through your lips after a moment. Your eyes flickered over the book in your grasp, it now being Glenn’s turn to watch, “It is my last one though,” you start up once again and turn to look at the guy beside you.
“Gotta make it count, right?”
The guy in question held no response. His eyes were practically glued to the comic book you held to the point that you thought he was going to make it float in the air or something.
“Glenn?” you question with a mild tilt of your head, becoming a little concerned at the lack of movement, but that at least mildly faded when his expression changed.
It was this sort of smug look that spread across his features. Like, he had this thought inside his head that he knew would gain praise if he said it... But he never did. “Shame.”
Without anything else, the man abruptly began to move.
He ducks his head a little and quickly pulls himself towards the edge of your bed before getting his body upright, all the while you just stared in utter confusion yet again, “What... Uh, Glenn?” you call out to gain at least a little bit of insight...
But he just walks out of your cell.
“See ya.”
~~~
The sun was right in the middle of the sky.
It was strong, every beam from that star spreading warmth across anything that the rays touched.
Especially your back.
You were doing what you previously said, which was helping Rick with the farming. The man himself had duty over the seeds, while you were the one doing the actual heavy work.
The tip of the garden hoe in your hands was placed against the dirt about a meter away from your feet. You took a moment, making sure that the tool was in the right position, letting it dig slightly in, before pulling it towards yourself.
Thus creating a small, shallow trench.
Once happy with your previous work, you let yourself move to the side, allowing Rick to do his part of the job.
Which he indeed did.
The man picked up one of those little pouches of seeds that the other guys managed to grab on a run, and began to sprinkle the little things throughout the newly dug line at an even distance, “Now,”
“I may not have experience when it comes to gardening, but,” Rick began with that usual gruff voice of his and leans back when he’d fully emptied out the small pouch, “I think within the next few weeks we will have some vegetables.”
“Or a new decoration for the yard,” he then adds on with less confidence, and you let out a mild scoff in response.
The two of you share a look, grins appearing on both pairs of lips, before you move back to the trench, using the smooth side of the hoe to reposition the dirt.
You let the tool in your hands drag down the new line of soil on the side, which in return covered up the seeds. And once at the end, “Or...” you dug the head of the hoe into the ground right beside it. “You could just look at the packet...”
“If you’re not too sure, that is.”
Your right arm was placed on top of the garden tool’s handle, the weight of your tired body now leaning onto it, while you wiped your sweaty forehead with the back of your hand.
It was now his turn to scoff.
The man shook his head, giving you a look of fake annoyance which ultimately failed as a smile curled at his lips yet again, “Yeah,”
“I guess you’re right.”
Before either of you could say anything else, there was a certain thing that you spotted beyond Rick’s shoulder.
It could barely be seen, considering the distance between both you and the oncoming thing. But it could be heard.
A motorbike.
Your face lit up in an instant. Your once tired and slightly nagging self fading away all at once as the sudden want to run surged through your veins.
And the moment Rick had turned back in your direction after looking at the bike himself, your eyes were on his, begging for permission to succumb to your feeling, but also apologising as it would leave him to do the work by himself.
“Go,” was all he said with a mild tilt of his head, and your feet moved before your brain did.
You did manage to get a “thank you” out to Rick when you ran past him, however, since you weren’t focused in that moment, you had no idea if he had actually heard.
Your legs were quick, one foot moving right after the other, while your eyes stuck on the transport coming closer and closer to its final destination.
However, it was far enough that you could make a quick pit stop at the barrel of water just on the outside of the farm area. There was a need to get the sweat and dirt off your warm skin anyway.
You shoved your hands in the cool liquid, swishing them round for about a second and even splashing some on your neck. But then you were on the move once again, wiping your hands on your trousers to get rid of the excess water.
It took you a moment to get to the first gate as you were kind of in the middle of the field, but thankfully someone was already there giving you a head start.
“Let’s go, Carl!” you yell out as the kid began to slide the huge gate open, trying to give him some sort of praise while also trying to distract the walkers from the incoming delivery.
Once the opening was now enterable, both you and Carl were quick to run through. “Okay, okay-- I’ll get the ropes, you get the gate,” you instruct, patting the kid on the shoulder before carrying out your mission when he showed an understanding.
Your feet skidded against the gravel underneath you in a matter of seconds when you got to the second gate, not even giving yourself a chance to take a proper breath as you hastily grab at the ropes without a moment to spare.
It was a new system. A reinforcement added after the whole Woodbury thing to ensure a safer entrance and exit.
It wasn’t much, but it was as good as it was going to get.
“Go, go, go!” Carl calls to you when he got the gate unlocked, and as soon as he started to pull it to the side, you had begun moving yourself.
The rope in your hands was yanked down in such a way that had your body practically floating as you used your weight to pull at it. And soon enough, after about a minute, the new doors began to open.
Your teeth were gritted, your arms were growing tired and the pungent smell of rotten flesh became practically the only thing in the air. But that wasn’t going to make you lose your focus.
Because as soon as those red doors hit against the lines of wooden spikes behind it with a whine that echoed through the visceral growls from rotten bodies, the bike made its way through, “All right, Carl! Move it back, move it back!”
With one last pull to the ropes, that felt like they had cut off your circulation, the set of blood covered doors closed right as the walkers had finally found out that it was an entrance.
You let out a huff of air, giving your now extremely tired arms a shake while Carl made sure that the official gate of the prison was completely secure.
“Good job,” was all that you said, giving him a gentle pat on the shoulder, which in return earned you one of his small smiles, probably more grateful of the fact that you didn’t call him a kid.
And with that, you were off once more.
The motorbike had stopped outside the first gate that you opened, and as soon as your eyes caught onto the figures that appeared with it, a smile returned to your lips.
They made it back.
A feeling of pure relief was passing through your veins when you watched Glenn hop off the back of the bike. He was unharmed and looked the exact same as he did this morning... with the additon of walker blood, “D’you guys have fun?”
But he was alive.
The guy smiled when he saw you, that light energy he always carried when in a good mood just radiating off of him, which is something that everyone who knew Glenn enjoyed, regardless of if they admitted it or not.
“Hey,” he breathes out when you were finally close enough, letting one of his hands raise up to your opposite shoulder once your body had concluded its movements next to him.
“Was it successful? Did you get good stuff?” you question, looking between the two boys while mirroring Glenn’s position, and Daryl slightly snorts before twisting round to take one of the backpacks attached to his bike, “Well...”
“Considering that this guy right here almost got himself taken out just to grab something,” he starts up through a voice that turned into a grunt halfway through when he pulled himself back into his previous position, “I would hope so.”
Sorry... What?
“Hey! You said you weren’t going to tell anyone!” Glenn points out after huffing out a breath, removing his hand from your shoulder to snatch the backpack from Daryl while you could only stare. “Oops.”
Your eyebrows were raised, lips parted with many sets of words aching to pass off the tip of your tongue until you finally decided. “Wha... You what?”
Glenn sighs when he saw Daryl’s amused expression. He gave him a playful yet meaningful glare, but then he steps towards you, letting his hand reside itself on your back once close enough before giving you a push as a signal to move.
This man better explain himself.
~
Back in your cell, as weird as that sounds, the pair of you sat on the old, ragged bunk bed. Both yours and Glenn’s legs hung over the edge of the tattered mattress which had sunk from the weight of two bodies after so long of nothing.
The man beside you was talking. Finally letting that story of his spurt from his lips, in a very dramatised manner.
“No, there was literally nothing! We didn’t see anything or hear those... those weird zombie noises-- I mean, Daryl didn’t even sense it or whatever.” Glenn ensures with frantic hands. Reliving the moment, “It just... All I did was reach for something.”
“That’s it... I looked at it and then went, ‘oh wow, you know? This-- This is exactly what I’m looking for’ and then BOOM! Walker.”
Even though this man was in fact talking about a near-death experience, there was a tinge of amusement that appeared in your chest. The frantic movements, the stumble of his words, the expression he held on his face.
He knew how to tell a story.
“Well, I’m glad Daryl was there then.” you comment before slightly turning your head, shielding the smile that begged to appear on your lips.
“What-- I mean, yeah... I guess,”
“But I could have got out myself.” Glenn points out, mildly offended at the lack of faith his best friend seemed to have in him, but you simply raised an eyebrow in his direction, “Could have? Meaning... that Daryl did save you.”
After going to speak, the man paused. His parted lips maintaining their position before they came to a close, while Glenn’s eyes averted from your own once you had faced him like before.
“Well... Again, yeah...” he began reluctantly before sighing, “But look, I was in an awkward position, okay?”
“I had the lower hand, I admit, however, it was literally grabbing at me from the other side of a shelf. I got jump scared!” Glenn exclaims, his voice raising in pitch, especially when your head jokingly shook, “I mean, I have played many horror games in my time-- Many, but nothing-- Nothing! Could’ve prepared me for that.”
The certainty in both his voice and his expression had your head shaking once again. It really was maddening to hear someone explain an experience like that in such an entertaining way.
... However, that feeling of amusement seemed to fade by the time your eyes were back on Glenn.
There was a new emotion that took over his face. It was unreadable at first; his gaze aimed towards a wall, lips closed, shoulders slightly sunk.
A memory.
“What are you thinking about?”
The question seemed to take a minute to process in Glenn’s mind. He remained as he was for about another second before he slightly leans back, a quiet exhale seeping between his lips.
“Uh,” he began through a sigh after closing his eyes with a shake of his head, “Nothing... Sorry, It’s nothing, it’s just... It was a weird moment.”
“Yeah, well, that’s understandable.” you point out before the cell could fill with silence again, “I mean, getting attacked by those things isn’t supposed to be fun, is it?” you then add, the continuation thankfully gaining a slight smile in response, “No.”
“No, no-- I know. I know... but.” Glenn insists, clasping his fist in his other hand, “It just made me think about all the times that things like that happened to other people, you know? And... How they weren’t lucky.”
“Or how some didn’t even have the chance to react, or--”
Those dark eyes had finally fallen to yours again, the expression on your face making him realise that he may have started to ramble.
He put his hands up all of a sudden, another sigh of air passing out his mouth when his palms reach up to his face, “Sorry! Sorry-- Oh, man, I didn’t mean to ruin the mood.”
“Hey, no,” you say quickly, placing a gentle hand on the top of his thigh before you could even think, “Glenn, listen, It’s fine! It’s a big thing to process... You’re doing great.”
Glenn kept his hands to his head, clearly still feeling the guilt regardless of what you said, but nonetheless the words prompted him to at least turn his face in your direction.
“Did you get what you were looking for, at least?” you question simply once his eyes met your own. It was an attempt to distract him, change the subject, so he could move on from self-pity...
However, you seemed to have created something much different.
Glenn sort of stared at you for a second. He blinked once... then again... and again, “Oh...”
Suddenly, his eyebrows raised, realisation stricking in those dark brown eyes before they began darting around the room like he was trying to find an invisible fly, “Oh-- Oh, the thing!”
“The thing-- Oh, hold on!”
There was not a single chance to get a word in yourself, as before you could even open your mouth to speak, his body had sprung up from the stiff mattress and hurled through the cell door.
“Gle-- Glenn?” you called when your eyes had caught up with your mind, but by the time you poked your head out of the cell for an answer, he had disappeared behind the curtain that hung in front of his own.
“Glenn?” you attempted again. Confusion was stretching across every feature on your face in a matter of seconds, and it wasn’t leaving anytime soon, as within the next second, the man himself reappears with a bag in his hands. “What is it?”
Inevitably, you were left without an answer. In fact, the only response you got was a grin forming on Glenn’s lips, and then he began to, gently, push you back into the cell.
At this point, you couldn’t even be bothered to question the man as he sat you back on the bottom bunk.
He retook his spot next to you with an eagerness that left your eyebrows furrowing, watching him unzip the pack as soon as it was in front of him for whatever mystery lay within.
And the next thing you knew, literally after blinking once, his hands were held in your direction, palms balancing an item that took a second for your brain to process.
However, even when it did, Glenn suddenly put a hand on top of the first thing and pushed it which lead to multiple other items spreading out underneath until it looked like a fan.
Comic books.
“Some are for me, so don’t go stealing all of them,” Glenn chimes in while the cogs in your brain finally turned the right amount, and after staring at the books like you just saw Jesus, your eyes went up to meet his. “Holy shit.”
“Holy shit, man! No way!” Within seconds, the books were in your hands. You flicked through them one by one, staring at each cover in absolute awe at the condition they were in. “They look great!”
“Man,” Your head shook, many emotions flooding through your head as you looked back at Glenn, who looked very chuffed with himself, might I add. “You almost died for these?”
“Hey, I mean, it was worth it, wasn’t it?! Like I said, these weren’t just for you.”
“And anyway, people would usually just say thank you, instead of taking a personal dig at the giver,” he then adds on in defence, even placing a hand over his heart as if you hurt him there.
A huff of air filtered out from your lips as you tried not to smile. But after looking at him for another second, however, it seemed to have failed.
With a mild shake of your head, you place the books, so that they sat in a pile to your side, before your arms decided to reach out towards Glenn.
A movement that had him reciprocating within seconds.
Your head landed on his shoulder when your arms were finally around each other. Even though there was no one to see it, that smile never had a want to leave their place on your lips.
“All right,” you say after a sigh, repositioning your head so that it was in the crook of his neck, “I will say thank you for risking your life for such incredible art...” Glenn’s body shook you as he tried not to laugh, “Just don’t do it again.”
“You’re welcome.”
You pull yourself out of the hug after the echo of his voice, “Seriously,” Your eyebrows were raised, each hand placed on each of his shoulders as you looked right into his eyes, “It’s like when I stayed with my grandparents.”
“If you showed even a smidge of happiness when you ate something in that house, the next thing you knew, there was like a hundred packets of it in the cupboard and the fridge.”
“Oh my god, I know, right?” Glenn beamed when a memory of his own struck his mind, and now the two of you were sat laughing in remembrance of the past.
Even the little moments were things people didn’t expect to miss.
“For real though, Glenn. Next time either take me with you, or don’t even try,” you began once the amusement had managed to die down, your eyebrows raising once again to make sure he got the message.
And he did. That sweet smile of his reappeared just for you, with the addition of little nods of his head.
“Okay.”
~~~~~
Seriously, I hope you guys enjoyed this.
I’m watching the walking dead... Again. I’m on like season 5 now and I can’t stop looking at Glenn.
ANYWAY, please send in more requests if you want them. There seems to be a lack of Male reader stuff when it comes to twd fics, so feel free to send me ideas if you want that changed, or just some more gender neutral fics!
Thank you for reading!- Alex :)

like father, like son || Rick Grimes (TWD) x gn!Reader
AVAILABLE ON AO3
Tumblr media
request for @zomb-1-egutzz
Inspiration: I Wanna Be Yours by Arctic Monkeys
Summary: Taking care of Carl, was like instinct. Ever since you've met him, you've just cared for him like your own. You don't know why, you just slotted into his side. And you thought that was pretty simple. But, what you had never thought about, was what it would mean for Rick.
TWs: mention of Lori's death, mention of Hershel's death, mention of Beth's death, angst, crying, essentially a panic attack, pent-up emotions, cursing, blood, gunshot wounds, injuries, unrequited love (but not really), and all things TWD.
[[A/N: hey bestie <333, hope you like it. I write as a stress reliever but this one kinda hurt a little bit. And just fyi, Carl is alive and well, (canon is not real, so it will not hurt me). Also, Rick is down bad in this. Terribly down bad. Enjoy :))) ]]
Tumblr media
You were a long-time family friend of the Greene's, and when you had nowhere else to go, you went to Hershel's farm. Even before the apocalypse, you helped when you could on the farm, and you knew all of them really well. A little like they were family.
But when it all started... everything went to shit for you pretty quickly.
And you... you had nowhere else to go.
With your family's blood on your hands and visions of unhinged jaws (that you didn't think you'd ever wash away), you ran as fast as you could. You just let your feet guide you and ended up on the Greene farm.
You still remember how hard they hugged you when you showed up, even with the blood (their blood) all over you. They held you then and kept you breathing for a long time. You don't know what you would've done without them.
But one day (after weeks of being helpless and grieving a loss you just couldn't get over, not really), you just pushed it all down with one motto: keep breathing.
You didn't get to enjoy life anymore, how could you? The world was ending, and all you needed to do was stay alive.
You didn't have to like it.
So you asked Hershel how to shoot a gun, and taught yourself how to use a knife. You knew Hershel didn't like it, the violence, but you wouldn't hear it. Because if your family had lost their lives, you sure as hell weren't losing yours.
The Greenes were worried about you, you could tell. Every day that went by where you didn't smile or laugh, and instead, practiced shooting bottles or killing a few walkers for the thrill of it, they stared at you just a little longer. With just a mix of worry and pity.
You didn't want to worry them, but you were just doing what you had to, to survive.
If you thought about your family... you'd probably run into the walkers. Tear the life out of your body yourself. How were you supposed to enjoy life when they got that privilege ripped away? It wasn't fair.
So, you avoided everything else and kept your focus on five things: breathing, shelter, protection, water, and food. That was it. You would even offer to go get things out of your own volition, and all your trips made you good at killing walkers. You did it effortlessly early on, and you're pretty sure the Greenes couldn't decide if that was a good or bad thing.
But everything changed when a Dad showed up begging Hershel to save his kid.
That day had made your head spin, seeing a little boy have a gunshot wound. It made your eyes burn, and your head fill with what plagued your nightmares (unhinged jaws and bloody hands). You avoided the kid at all costs.
You hadn't initially known Rick, or even really wanted to (him, Lori, and Shane were definitely far too much for you to handle) but you were kind of the mediator. Hershel hated the violence that his group had, but he loved you. And Rick's group agreed with your 'violent' ways, so naturally, you sat right in the middle.
You didn't want it, perse, but you got used to it pretty quickly. You truly couldn't count on both hands how many times you had to step physically in between Hershel and Rick. So, somehow, someway, you'd earned his trust and respect.
That being said, you didn't really talk. Rick had a lot on his shoulders, with a pregnant wife, an injured son, and whatever the hell he and Shane had going on (you stayed the fuck away from that). And you weren't really a 'get to know me' kind of person at the time.
But, everything shifted when his kid got better.
You watched him kind of roam around the farm a lot. Rick and Lori had a lot going on, you understood that, and you know Rick tried but he still looked... lonely. And there was something heavy in you that knew he wasn't going to really have a childhood, that he lost something so precious.
There was nothing different that day, at all. You woke up, made sure your knife was safe in your pocket and went out. You did that often, even though Hershel and the girls hated it, just disappeared into nearby neighborhoods or whatever buildings you could get into (you were getting good at picking locks). That day you were looking for anything you could get your hands on, anything.
Endlessly walking through a culdesac, darting in between each house, trying to find anything of value. Food, water, something to help with shelter-
Instead, you found something else.
In the dead grass of one of these classy houses' front yard was one soccer ball. It was dirty, but not too bad for the apocalypse (you had seen far worse, and were probably worse yourself actually). With a thought, you picked it up in your hands, squeezing it, and it wasn't flat either.
You weren't sure why (or maybe you knew exactly why), but that's all you brought back to the farm.
Every day, when your brain would get to be too much, you'd throw it around in your hands or dribble it around the yard. At first, Maggie had looked at you oddly, but now, it seemed to relax her (and Beth and Hershel). It was healthier, or they, at the very least, thought so.
You could pretty much immediately feel his eyes on you though, a little longingly. Maybe that's why, when you'd never kicked it too far in the entire time you had it, you kicked it too far.
It rolled up and hit him in the back of the leg.
He turned to look at you, blue eyes sparkling a little, and then down at the ball.
On instinct, you spoke, "Shit."
The kid looked directly at you then.
"Don't say that, kid," you mended, quickly -maybe even a little awkwardly.
"Carl," he spoke then.
You questioned, "What?"
"My name's Carl," he explained with quite the intention in his voice, "-not kid."
You laughed a little, maybe for the first time in a while. You could nearly hear Maggie's gaze snap to you at the sound. She was always the most worried.
"Well, Carl," you hummed, playfully, "-you gonna pass me my ball back?"
He pressed his lips together in a thin line like he was thinking -the hat on his head wobbled a little. It was endearing.
"Only if you let me play too," he negotiated, a big grin on his face and something in you softened (for the first time in a long time).
You tilted your head, hand on your hip, "You drive a hard bargain, sir."
Carl laughed, and you felt your smile grow bigger. Now, you felt more eyes on you, Rick and Lori. Or at least Rick.
Apparently, you were making quite the spectacle.
"Alright, Carl," you finally replied, "-you've got a deal."
That was when it all started when Carl changed your life. Every day that you could, you'd play a game of soccer with him, eventually it developed more into a chatty sort of game. He told you a lot, and you told him about the things you used to do as a kid.
It felt like you had a hand in helping him keep his innocence. It was nice.
You remember the eyes sort of fading off of you, well. Except for one.
Rick was always watching. You couldn't understand if it was a Carl thing, or a worrying thing, or what exactly. But, you did notice it.
And eventually, Carl convinced him to join too.
"C'mon, Dad," he pleaded, "-just one game."
"Carl, I gotta-"
"Please," he turned on the puppy dog eyes, you laughed a little at how he softened immediately. His eyes shot to yours a second at the noise, you didn't think much of it.
"How are we supposed to play wit' just three of us?" He relented, just a smidge, "-Don't we need equal teams?"
Carl frowned.
Your mouth was open before you could even stop it, "Oh, please, I'm good enough to take the two of you on my own."
Rick's lips quirked into a smile, you had the thought that he was handsome before shoving it far away, "Are ya?"
"I am," you reiterated, just doing what felt natural, "-you too scared to try, Grimes?"
Carl laughed at that, almost giddy, it made something in your chest warm. Mission accomplished.
And with a breath, Rick readied himself -blue eyes solid on yours, "'S see whatcha got, Y/N."
That wouldn't be the last time the three of you would play soccer together, but it would be the first time you really got to know Rick. It remained that way, where you just played with Rick and Carl on days they could or days you could.
You'd found a connection, and it was nice.
But then, you were kind of a friend to Carl. You truly cared about him, yeah, you weren't on the level of a parent for him. Not at all. That just wasn't your dynamic, you didn't want to step on any toes.
Lori's or Rick's.
Before you could stop it, the fateful day arrived.
You were strung between a delicate mix of concern and disbelief. The overthrow of the farm was big, and maybe so was finding the prison, but this... this day was much worse.
You'd known Lori a little bit better then, she talked to you a little (because you were always around Carl). And she seemed nice, really, just in a fucked up situation that she could hardly handle herself. Nevertheless, to handle it for Carl. Plus, the whole Shane situation... He was dead now, and that really couldn't be easy on her conscience. (You kind of gathered the situation a little bit, when you were getting to know Rick. He hadn't said anything, but you understood enough.)
And when she went into labor, you hated that you weren't hopeful. Hated it.
Carl went with Maggie to help deliver, and your heart twisted in your chest (so insanely worried) but you needed to help the others.
When Maggie came out of the room, with just Carl and the baby -blood all over her hands, your heart sunk to the bottom of your chest. Lower, if it could. There was this little spark of hope that Carl was okay, but then you looked at him, really looked at him.
Rick was crying, and belligerent, and he did the very same. Just looked at his son, "No, no, no-"
God, he... he didn't-
You don't think you could ever forget the next moment.
A sob was racking up your throat, heavy and so suffocating as you watched Rick just lose it and Carl stayed steady in place, only looking at the ground. And you felt like you were going to throw up.
Stomach twisting, as your eyes got cloudy.
You hadn't even noticed it, maybe because your mind was reeling, but then you heard the slap of footsteps and then a body running into yours. Carl, Carl-
Hands shaking, your hands wrapped around him, holding him tightly -swallowing back what you could. Your body moved on its own.
You crouched down, you couldn't stop the tears then, eyes skimming over his face. He was just looking at you, blue eyes filling with tears, and before you knew it you were cupping his face and wiping all of them away.
"Oh, baby, baby-" you were whispering, just for him to hear, "-I'm so sorry."
And then, you pulled him into another hug. That time you didn't let go, you would hold him until he did. Tears wetting your shoulder you only squeezed him tighter -kissing him on the forehead when it felt like your soul was crushed into pieces.
That was where it started.
You still went on trips, but you stayed around a lot more. Because, as you were caring for Carl, you also started caring for Rick. They went hand-in-hand. That was much more important than anything else.
It started with going on trips, and getting Carl books and candy when you could. It grew from there though, you started siphoning off some of your food to give him extra. When he would get hurt, even small little cuts, you were immediately there -patching him up. Making sure he was completely fine.
And Rick... well, he was more complicated. It was dragging him away from the farm when he seemed so tired he could barely stand, it was getting him out of bed when he didn't want to even breathe, it was making sure he was eating, and it was sometimes guiding him back to reality when he saw Lori.
He started getting better eventually, and you did convince him to go see the baby. He'd been avoiding her as much as physically possible; you told him he should.
"She's a piece of Lori that you'll always have, Rick. Her and Carl."
He'd look at you a certain type of way you couldn't label then, but eventually agreed. So, you thought it was going well. As he became more conscious again though, similar to his previous self (sometimes you thought maybe even better), he started noticing.
Rick saw all that Carl had gathered, the finger pointed back to you. He was eating candy, the finger pointed back to you. Carl fell and scraped his knees, you were near immediately by his side while Rick watched (the finger pointed back to you).
And when you ate, you'd done how you always did, almost on instinct. Siphoning off some of your food and piling it onto Carl's plate.
You're not sure when Rick caught that, at all, really. But you knew he did.
Because, eventually, he started sitting beside you, and as quick as you'd siphon off to Carl, he'd siphon some of his off to you.
The first time he'd done it, you froze -staring at your plate.
"Rick, you don't-"
He didn't even flinch, blue eyes taking you in -grateful, "I do."
"Well," you reasoned, "-don't do it every day. You need to eat too."
"Don't ya give some to Carl every day?"
"Yeah, but-"
"No buts," he promptly finished, smiling at you in a new type of way, continuing his conversation with Daryl.
He'd done similar things, and eventually, your care spanned over to Judith. It wasn't as pressing as Carl, as Beth usually had her dealt with, but you'd been the one to feed her a few times (sat right beside Carl). And you won't lie you did do the baby voice a few times.
You didn't know it then, but Rick was looking at you in a new type of way.
And then, things happened in rapid succession.
The Governor did what he did, and Hershel died right in front of your eyes. You grabbed Maggie that day so tight, holding her as you both fell to the ground. It felt just like when your family... Your heart was thrown out of your chest and stomped into the dirt.
The fall of the prison didn't give you much time to grieve. You'd escaped with Carl and Rick, Judith had disappeared and you hoped with everything in your chest that she was still alive. God, you had never felt so low in your life.
Those days weren't good, and you had holed yourself up -lock and key. The only person who could through to you was Carl, despite how much Rick tried.
Breathing, shelter, protection, water, and food, but just for a bigger audience now.
The Claimers only proved you right. Seeing Carl like that, the threats of what they were going to do to him? You would've snapped if Rick hadn't.
"He's mine."
That day, you felt yourself come back again.
You held Carl tight against your chest, rubbing his hair over and over. Just before that, you scanned his whole body carefully -looking everywhere for anything at all. You would've killed them again if you could have if there was.
Holding him, you recenter yourself -calming the shake of your hands and the beating of your heart. You whispered, "You're okay, you're okay, you're okay-"
Carl had stopped you then, leveling his blue eyes on you, "I'm okay."
You smiled, maybe a little teary, reiterating, "You're okay."
And then, you saw Rick.
That was the thing about you, you were hardwired to care for them both at this point (for maybe more reasons than one, but you wouldn't admit that out loud). Making sure Carl was entirely fine, you kissed his forehead and spoke.
"Imma go help your Dad, okay?"
Hunting down a rag and a little bit of extra water, you slowly made your way over to him. He still had his eyes closed, and his hands were shaking; you simply sat right in front of him -wordlessly. You hardly even breathed, not wanting to startle him at all, but somehow still wanting to to bring him back.
You waited, patiently, for his eyes to open again, and when they did, you smiled a little.
"Hey, Grimes," you whispered, brandishing the rag, "-Thought you might need a little help, that okay?"
He looked at you in the same type of way he always did, one that you still couldn't label.
Before speaking lowly and a little slurred in his accent, "Yeah, 'at's okay."
You took a careful breath and leaned forward -gently scrubbing the blood off of his skin. Moving slowly, his eyes fluttered shut, and something in your chest tightened. He trusted you so much.
Your heart lept into your throat at the thought, and you took the moment to just look at Rick. How he differed from the first time you saw him, the time in his face. Longer hair that curled, the stubble that climbed up his cheeks, he was so different, but still somehow the same. Your heart stuttered in your chest.
That wasn't new, but it felt like it was.
With a breath, you continued wiping away what you could -pushing all around his face, smoothing over his lips, and dabbing a little on his facial hair. You moved slowly, not wanting to irritate his skin, but it made it take a little longer. As you did so, your fingertips brushed along his skin -just a little. It made your head spin.
You leaned back, satisfied, before grabbing his hands -left one first. You looked at them a moment, eyeing the callouses and the rough skin along his palm. His life was riddled on them, practically written there.
You cleared your throat, blinking back into focus.
Scrubbing away on the back and then flipping it to the front, you repeated the process.
He was looking at you now, blue eyes intently focused. You felt his steady gaze as you curled your hands around his, and for a moment it felt like you couldn't breathe.
Your heart beating heavily in your chest, you tried to stay focused.
When his skin was a sort of pink instead of blood red, you let go of his hands. Decidedly, you patted his cheek with a smile (the buzz of his skin against yours made your head spin).
"All better," you chimed, playfully.
He laughed a little then, and you felt something in you stir. Long ago dormant. Handsome, your mind spoke.
It was suddenly very hard to ignore it now, though. This close to his face, and he kind of looked like he-
With a breath, snapping your eyes from his and clearing your throat. "I'll um, go see if Carl needs me."
He just smiled at you in a certain type of way.
The two of you never talked about it again, but you did find him looking at you more.
And then Terminus.
To think about it now, made your skin crawl and bile rise up your throat. Beth died right in front of you, shot right through the head. She wasn't... There was no way-
You felt part of yourself crumble that you didn't think you could get back. God, she was so young-
You had new nightmares; they made your stomach twist and your sleep come to a relative halt. It wasn't just your family now (although it kind of was), it was Beth and Hershel. They had both been so sudden, your mind was still reeling. The gunshot bouncing through your ears, even now, as you lay on a blanket -Carl just beside you.
Your eyes snapped to him, watching the rise and fall of his chest. Alive, it thrummed along your mind, alive.
You watched it for a few moments, letting your mind settle on that fact. Carl is safe, Carl is fine. Something in your shoulders relaxed, and your breaths weren't as heavy in your lungs.
Alive, alive, alive, alive.
Your stomach twisted because you didn't know if Judith was.
Instinctively, you shot up in your spot, breaths hollowed out in your chest. You blinked a few times, bringing yourself back to the ground beneath your fingers. Chancing a look at Carl again, you found him still fast asleep.
You exhaled a long breath, you weren't going to sleep tonight. Every time you closed your eyes, you'd either see... them or Carl could be hurt, there was no good reason to sleep.
Shaking your hands, you stood up. You stood there a moment, taking in the night -the buzz of the bugs, the shine of the stars, and the (luckily) very distant groans of the walkers.
"Ya okay?"
You startled in place, shit. Rick was on watch duty, you forgot. You tried to volunteer, but he'd refused ("'Aven't seen you sleep a second."). You weren't sure how to feel about how attentively he seemed to watch you.
You bit at your lips a second, swallowing, and wiping your hands down your legs. Your eyes were fogging up, and your throat was clogged. You felt a little like you couldn't breathe-
"Y/N?"
You blinked, deliriously, and your eyes were watery now, and it felt somehow like your lungs were filled. A bit like every breath got stuck in your throat.
"Hey, hey, look at me, sweetheart."
And then, Rick was suddenly in front of you. You hadn't even heard him move, the pounding of your heart was so loud-
With the gentlest of movements, he held your jaw, bringing your eyes to his.
"Hey," he spoke gently, concern flitting through his eyes, "-hey. 'At's goin' on?"
You swallowed, something clawing up your throat (but your heart was softer in your head now), your eyes falling to his jacket, "I just-"
"C'mon, talk to me," he hummed, bringing his eyes to yours again -something heavy in his eyes, worry.
"I just," and you felt your voice catch in your throat, you felt the tears slip out of your eyes, "-I just... I just miss them, and... and every time I close my eyes, Rick, it's just-"
His thumbs rubbed away your tears, gently moving back and forth, "I know, baby, I know. I miss 'em too."
Something in your mind noted that 'baby' was new, but you weren't focused on that. Your mind was running at 100 miles an hour, and all you could see clearly was Rick.
Your body acted on instinct, as you threw yourself into him -digging your face into his shoulder and wrapping your arms around his neck. He seemed slow to react for a moment, but carefully, his hands came to wrap around your waist.
You took a deep breath in, just smelling the woodsy smell he always seemed to carry around with him. It made the tension in your body melt, and he seemed to notice it -tightening his grip slightly.
"I gotcha," he whispered, maybe like he was a little scared to break the moment, "-'s gonna be okay, I promise."
You fell asleep on his shoulder later that night, one of his arms tight along your side. And if he shushed everyone that morning afterward (wanting to keep you close as long as possible maybe), kissing your temple whenever you stirred, looking at you a little like you were the most precious thing in the world, you'd never know.
It was easier after that. Any time you felt it all coming back up, Rick would be right there, hand smoothed along your shoulder, pushing you into his side, or brushing his hand along yours while you walked. You weren't sure if you could get used to it all.
And then, a good day came.
Judith, baby Judith was back.
You felt the sob wrack up through your throat, as you smoothed your hand over her little hair. Your breaths were shaky but you were smiling, and so were both Rick and Carl. All of you were huddled together, crying, and for a split second, it felt like maybe you were a little family.
You bit back the thought but peeked up at Rick just to find him looking right back at you. Something in your chest fluttered.
Finding Alexandria was a little like a fever dream, all of you weren't trusting it, especially since Terminus. But eventually, something in you relaxed as you watched Carl know people his age and find friends. You weren't as scared anymore.
That being said, you had your own home, but it stayed empty. You were constantly in the Grimes' house. Whether for Carl, Judith, or Rick, you were always there. And Rick didn't seem to mind at all. (Sometimes you thought he preferred it.)
That day was a normal one, you'd crossed on over to the Grimes' -bouncing a little on your toes. It was your day to watch Judith, well, it always kind of ended up being a team effort at the end. But, if Rick had something to do, you'd be on baby duty.
Walking in like you always did, the house was eerily quiet.
You pursed your lips, "Rick?"
He called out, from the kitchen you'd guessed (you could hear the sizzle of a pan), "In 'ere!"
You moved with a practiced grace, smoothing around the piles of toys like you lived here (and in essence, you kind of did). Just as you entered the doorway, you started again.
"Hey, where are our kids?"
And then you stepped into the room and got a look at Rick. Clean-shaven Rick. Sharp jawline, blue eyes, Rick.
Your mind went completely blank.
He turned to you then, sort of smiling, "Our?"
Blinking, you cleared your throat, "Sorry, what?"
"You said," he was stepping closer, something shining in his eyes, "-our kids."
It was hard to focus, but you'd gathered what he said.
"Shit, sorry," you started, scrambling a little, "-I didn't mean to-"
"No, no," he dismissed, eyes intently focused on yours (somehow you think his facial hair distracted from his eyes, were they always that blue?), "-you're right, darlin'. 'Ey are as much yours as 'ey are mine."
You took a deep breath in, deflecting a little and motioning to his face, "When did you...?"
"This mornin'," he answered, turning back to the pan (breakfast, you guessed), "-why? It look 'at bad?"
Your head was spinning, but you answered anyway.
"What, no," you answered, instinctively, "-it looks good. Great, actually."
He smiled at you in a sort of way you couldn't read, wearing his pajamas and hair slightly tussled -your mouth went dry.
"Yeah?"
You willed everything in yourself to say something witty, playful, like normal. But he was still looking at you, focused, and all your brain could think was blue-
"Yeah," you answered quietly.
He hummed a moment, hand coming up to rub at his jaw. Calloused fingers against the most certainly smooth skin, you briefly thought about touching it yourself.
You cleared your throat, "Sorry, so where are th- our kids?"
Rick's eyes smoothed over your face a second before he smiled, shaking his head, and dropped his eyes back to the pan, "Judith's still sleepin', and Carl is at a friend's."
"Which friend?" you asked, instinctively.
"He's fine, baby," he laughed a little like he was testing the word, "-ere's no need to be worried."
Baby rattled around your head for a few seconds, especially coming from that face. The last time he called you that, you were on the verge of a mental breakdown. And come to think of it, with how you were reacting to a shaved face, maybe he was onto something.
"Grimes," you leveled, but there wasn't any bite.
"I'm serious," he added, looking at you (blue, blue) -trying to convey it to you.
You pursed your lips, deadpanning, "You forgot, didn't you?"
"Maybe," he smiled at you, almost fondly, and your knees nearly buckled.
God, you needed to get a hold of yourself.
"I'll figure it out later," you remarked -passively, "-What are you making?"
He seemed to pause, eyes skimming along you like he was suddenly taking you in, before stepping to the side, "Come n' see for yourself."
You had the spare thought that he was doing it on purpose, before swatting it away and gathering by his side. Mindlessly, your brain noted his elbow bumping into you and the swarm of body heat that radiated off of him. You blinked it away.
He had a few things going, typical breakfast stuff, but you did decisively notice what looked to be a single portion of your favorite.
"Is that-"
"For ya? Yeah," he answered, unflinchingly, "-'Figured I could be sweet today."
You quipped back, looking up at him, "What a change of pace, Grimes."
He laughed at that, your eyes smoothed over his smile before dropping back to the food. Your breaths felt a little hollow in your chest for an entirely different reason.
You stood there and helped portion of the food, focused on placing plates out for him to then fill. You could feel his eyes steady on you as you did so, just until he started portioning. You promptly grabbed one of the other foods and portioned it yourself.
As soon as you finished, Rick spoke up.
"Did ya mean it?"
You looked at him, curiously, "What?"
"Our kids," he answered, something flickering behind his eyes, "-Do ya really think of 'em as your own?"
"As long as I'm not... overstepping," you clarified, dropping the pan into the sink, "-yeah, of course, I do."
He smiled a little, the flicker stronger now, "Really?"
"Well, yeah," you laughed, a little uncertain now, "-Should I not?"
"No," he echoed out, something heavy in his tone, "-you should. 'Ey're yours."
"Then, why-"
""S just nice to 'ear," he explained, pulling another one of the pans into the sink -sliding in just beside you.
"Why?" you questioned.
Rick looked at you, eyes flickering along your face, seeming to decide on something, "Can I show ya somethin'?"
You quirked a brow, playfully, "What is this something?"
"A gift," he answered, naturally.
You blinked, a little deliriously, "For me?"
"Yeah," he hummed, taking your wrist in his hand (your brain turned to mush) and guiding you through the house, "-'Course it is."
"Where did you get a gift?"
"On a run," he answered, easily, pulling you into his bedroom before letting go. He wandered over to his closet.
"Why-" you laughed a little, "-Why were you thinking of me on a run?"
Rick didn't hesitate a second, hands skimming over some shelves, "I'm always thinkin' of ya."
Your lips snapped shut, as your eyes just followed him around the room.
Since he was so preoccupied, you let your eyes roam over his jaw, the angular lines of his nose, the curve of his Adam's apple, the slight push of his lips, and the curl that seemed to trail down his forehead. You almost adjusted it yourself, but you fought back the urge.
"'Ere it is," he sighed, relieved, before seeming to gather something up in his arms.
You tried to peek over his shoulder, but he decidedly kept them too raised.
"Ya ready?" He chimed, excitingly.
You quipped, smiling, "I was born ready, Grimes."
Rick laughed at that, and you bit back the grin that threatened to slip across your face. There was something so domestic about all of this, it made your breath rattle in your chest, and your heart skip a beat.
And then, he turned around.
Your breath caught in your throat.
He held in his hands, a brand-new soccer ball, still in the package. Your brain buzzed for a moment, it was so sentimental. It made your head spin, making you a little breathless. A grin grew wide along your face, lips curling up.
"No way," you muttered, leaning forward and skimming your fingers across it, "-that is so sappy, Grimes."
He laughed a little, and your eyes flicked to him where a pink dusted up to the top of his ears. Your smile shone even brighter.
"Figured you could let me and Carl try to gain a little on your record," he smiled.
"What was it again?" you grinned, taking the ball into your hands, "-Four to zero?"
"Six," he corrected, instinctively (like he remembered), "-Six to zero."
Wordlessly, you gently took the box into your hands, his eyes steady on you.
"How long did it take to find this?"
"I was lookin' for the past few runs," he answered -vaguely.
"Looking?" You questioned, "-You plan this out, Rick?"
He hummed, smiling, "Maybe."
You quirked a brow, not quite looking at him, "What's the occasion, Grimes?"
He fell quiet then, and you promptly dropped your smile and looked at him. Eyes skimming along his face, he didn't seem upset. He seemed entirely the opposite, actually.
Blue eyes looking at you like they always did.
"Rick?" You asked, concern smoothing through you, "-Everything alright?"
He smiled a little, shaking his head a little, "God, you're... you're... you're unbelievable."
"Um," you flustered a little, holding the ball tighter to you, "-is that a good or a bad thing?"
"Good," he answered, with probably the biggest grin, "-great, it's a great thin'."
"Yeah? Well," you muttered out, a little frazzled, "-um, thank you."
He laughed a little bit, then but it slowly dissipated into the air. Leaving you and him, and his crazy blue eyes (seriously, how have you never noticed that?).
Rick spoke breathlessly then, rushed as if it was just waiting to come out (like it was building, building, building, until it burst), "I love you."
You dropped the ball (and box) right onto your feet. It stung a little.
"Shit," you hissed, before scrambling, "-Wait, that wasn't to you. I... I just I hit my toes with the box, and it hurt-"
He smiled at you even brighter then, eyes dropping to your feet, "Ya alright?"
"Yeah, what," you cleared your throat, "-I'm fine. I'm just... a little in shock, I guess."
"Yeah?" He asked, something lilting in his tone and you almost felt like he got closer to you.
"Yeah," you breathed out, "-I just... I never could've imagined a man like you, um, loving me."
He was definitely getting closer, blue eyes flickering between the two of yours, "A man like me?"
"It's a good thing," you explained, "-You're just caring, and I love your kids, and-"
His face was breath away from yours. Your lips moved before you could think about it.
"-handsome," you finished a little breathlessly.
He grinned then, crinkling at his eyes, and something there, deep in the blue. You couldn't tell if it was mischievous or loving or maybe even teasing-
"Am I?"
Something in you snapped.
You practically jumped forward, arms wrapping around his neck, and lips pressing to his. Rick laughed into it (which made you laugh a little too), but his hands sank to your waist entirely on instinct.
It was a little desperate, as Rick tilted his head just the right way and seemed to pour everything into his lips. Which were very much already good on their own. It made you dizzy, and you nearly stumbled in your steps, but he held you a little tighter and kept you in place.
Before, pulling you forward even more.
It sent a shock through your spine and made the breath slink out of your lungs.
Speaking of breath-
You pulled back, taking a deep breath in -mind a little hazy, "Jesus Christ."
Rick laughed, but still pressed forward, leaving little kisses on your lips -surface level. Again, and again, and again, and again-
Laughing, you moved your hands to his face, pulling him back, "Rick, you need to breathe, yeah?"
"Not as bad as I need ya," he retorted, before pressing kisses along your jaw.
It made your head spin, and maybe you were a little dizzy but you didn't think it was from the lack of oxygen.
"Rick," you urged, laughing.
He mindlessly moved down to your neck, a little like he couldn't get enough. It zapped through your spine again.
"Rick," you repeated, maybe with a little less laughter, "-c'mon, I have to tell you something."
He groaned, before pulling back to face you, blue eyes focused. Rick looked at your smile, and bit down his own.
You took a breath in, and cradled his face again (his skin was soft), "I love you too."
He grinned big and wide then, something shining in his eyes, "Ya don't know how long I 'ave waited to 'ear 'at."
"How long?"
He answered, with ease, "Since I saw ya givin' Carl your food."
"Rick," you almost soothed, "-that was forever ago. Why didn't you say something?"
"Was never the right time," he hummed, kissing you at the hinge of your jaw, "-I was goin' through somethin' and then ya were."
You hummed a moment, finally pushing back the loose curl.
"And I just-" he exhaled a breath, "-I wanted to make sure ya felt the same. Didn't want the kids to lose ya."
"Even if I didn't love you, Grimes," you soothed, trailing your hands along his jaw, "-They would've never lost me."
He just looked at you then, a little like he couldn't believe you were in front of him. Couldn't believe you were real.
"They're our kids," you offered with a teasing smile, "-are they not?"
"Yeah, 'ey are."
And without another breath, he kissed you so hard that it felt like your breath was knocked out of your lungs. But there was no way in hell that you were stopping.
You'd waited long enough for this.
He grinned against your lips, mindlessly kicking the soccer ball out of the way to get closer to you. Whispers of 'Ours' between every press of lips like he couldn't believe it. Or maybe like it was all he'd ever wanted.
And apparently, he had waited just as long.

Orange crush
Pairings: Carl Grimes X GN!reader
Warnings: fluff, carl being kind of an idiot, little bit of a drabble sorry :P Also i’m working on a lot of asks right now, so dw they’re coming soon🫶
Ever since you could remember, you and Carl had been best friends, growing up together when he joined Alexandria, when he got his eye shot by your ex boyfriend...
But you had noticed you had developed romantic feelings for your best friend, holding hands with him, kissing each other on the cheek...but you didn't think he had feelings for you? And you were fine with that, after all, you didn't want to lose him after everything you two had been through together.
Rick or Michonne would tease him about having a crush on you and he would immediately go red and throw a puzzled look. "No, I don't like them...Me and Y/N are just affectionate... Can't best friends be affectionate?"
"Best friends don't leave hickeys on each other, Carl..." One of them would say.
"It's platonic!"
Or the way you would stay over at the Grimes' house and come downstairs in his shirt and some jeans. Rick and Michonne would look at each other and roll their eyes. Holding each other's hands when you went on a run, talking about how you guys would end up living together, in the middle of nowhere.
And when he did realize? Oh boy...
You were in Carl's room, reading comics together, you were laying on his chest and he sat up, looking alarmed. You sat up too, looking at him with worry. "What? What's wrong?" You tried staying quiet in case he was hearing something. "I think I like you...?" You roll your eyes. "You just now noticed?" You smile and he looks at you puzzled. "Carl, we make out all the time...?"
"It was platonic!" He would try to reason while his face turned red.

Carl Grimes x GN reader
///TW: none💗///
Summary: you see Carl with Judith and wonder if he would want a child of his own.
Tumblr media
Walking along the sidewalk lining your neighborhood, you heard the cooing of a baby. You immediately recognized it as Judith. Carl always walked Judith at this time, and you had just recently started walking with them.
You and Carl have been together for about three months now, and Judith has become really close to you.
Her noises got louder as you rounded the corner, and saw that she was patiently waiting for you in her stroller.
“Judith! Good morning,” you told her, letting her grasp at your hands.
You looked up to Carl and saw him looking at you as if he was seeing you for the first time. As if he saw Christmas lights brightening before him, rapping him in warmth and the feeling of safety.
“Good morning, Carl,” you told him, walking around to give him a peck. He returned it gratefully, taking ahold of your hand.
“Ready?” Was all Carl asked, making you nod.
The three of you started walking, listening to the silence that surrounded you both.
It was quiet for about fifteen minutes, and that was when Judith started to fuss.
“Nap time, Judy?” Carl asked her, circling around to pick her up.
Carl gently cradled Judith in his arms, rocking back and forth on his heels. He was whispering to her, trying to calm her down, and all you could do was watch.
He was so good with kids, especially Judith. Whenever he was with any of the younger members, he treated them as if they were his blood. As if they were his own children. It made you yearn for a normal world. One where it wouldn’t be a life or death decision.
But you knew that if it were to ever happen, whether it’s with you or another, he would be absolutely perfect.
“You’d make a great dad,”
“What?”
Carl turned to you, shock all over his face. He didn’t look upset, but he looked distracted.
And you that was when you realized you said it out loud. You didn’t mean it to slip. It just happened.
Even with his surprised features, he still looked even more fatherly with Judith calming in his arms. His hat and eye patch displayed experience, ones that he had learned from. The gun strapped to his leg showed he was capable. You knew he would be everything you ever needed. Everything any child needed.
“You’d make a great father…” you said a little bit more softly. You stayed where you were.
You saw his breathing pattern change. It was the one thing you could catch before he muttered, “Let me go put Judith down,” before turning away from you.
He left you with a sense of regret. Why did you say that?
You found yourself sitting on the couch, listening to Carl shush Judith to sleep a few rooms down. You had no idea if he knew you were there, but you waited, hoping you didn’t ruin things.
When Carl expressed what happened with his mother, Lori, and how he had to put her down for the sake of Judith, your heart broke.
Maybe mentioning anything to do with a baby was a bad idea.
You no longer heard Carl. His whispers or humming. Just footsteps. Heavy footsteps. You didn’t dare watch him, no matter how much you were dying to.
You felt the couch shift with his weight, and you knew he sat closer to you on purpose.
“You really think so?”
You could barely hear him, but you understood completely what he meant. You turned to face him, and was met with his pleading eyes. He looked so vulnerable in this moment, you just wanted to smother him with cuddles and hold him.
“I do.”
“Well, I think you’d make a great (mother/father), y/n. You’d be amazing,” Carl grasped your hand with one of his heart stopping smiles.
“Doubtful,” you said, trying to be playful. Carl picked up on it.
All he said in return was, “How about we try and see?”

Insecurities Carl Grimes would love would be…
Tumblr media
Acne
He definitely used to struggle with skin outbreaks and understands the pain of keeping up with skin care. He’s definitely clean your face for you if you’re too tired (he loves cleaning your face) so he definitely wouldn’t mind! He loves looking and touching your facial features.
Crooked teeth
When you’re having a hard time liking your teeth he would always say “your teeth are hugging each-other, they’re best friends!” It reminded you when you brushed your teeth and you’d giggle to yourself. He also reassured you that crooked teeth are normal!
Frizzy hair
As someone who has glorious hair (y’all know I’m right I wanna touch carls hair), he loves seeing someone with different hair than his family. Anytime you guys were out on runs, he loved seeing your frizz when the sun was directly on you. He thought you looked so angelic
Stomach fat
HE LOVES YOUR TUMMY SO MUCH?? Every-time he sees it when you change, stretch, reaching for something you cannot reach, he blushes so hard it’s adorable. When he spoons you, he holds your stomach making you melt under his touch. You could fall asleep right then and there.
Moles
So y’all know that saying “your moles are where your past lover kissed you the most”? Yeah he believes that. He’ll kiss your moles no matter where they are because anytime you notice your mole(s) doing everyday tasks, he wants you to know he loves that part of you.

A/N: I loved writing this and if none of your insecurities are on here know that your insecurities are beautiful no matter what and your comfort character would adore you! I’ll probably write another for Daryl and maybe Rick bc this was so fun to do!

The Walking Dead x GN/NB!over stimulated!Reader
Tumblr media
This is a two parter! As of right now the second one isn't out!
Request : nope
Type : headcanon
A / N : My tip is always headphones!! I also only did the characters im comfortable with writing about as of right now! If you need more tips always feel free to ask <33
Tumblr media
Carl Grimes
He gets it
He also picks up on it really fast
If you're acting at all off he'll come up behind you and cover your ears to block out some of the noise
He likes it when you put your hands over his
If you look like your about to cry he'll take you away from the chaos and get you some place thats calm and you don't need to stress out anymore
He's probably picked up anything he thinks you can mess with while being over stimmed
One of those is definitely a stuffed animal
Carl definitely has had made excuses that embarrass himself just to help you get away
Tumblr media
Rick Grimes
He has experience with it due to his son
He's horrible at picking up on it though
Most of the time you have to go up to him and tell him you're over stimulated by everything going on and he'll try his best to help you
Most of the time he'll send you off with Carol or Tara cause he wants to help but he's busy
When you have to be some place with him he has something in his pockets for you to mess with to distract yourself
Rick just tries to make sure you know he does care
When he does have the time he'll take you somewhere you can rest and will stay with you
Unless he gets pulled to work again
He wants to prioritize you, really
He's just a busy man
Tumblr media
Daryl Dixon
He does not what he's doing
He just tries to ask you what you need
He picks up on it almost immediately
9 times out of 10 he goes and asks Carol or Rick what he should be doing
He probably just sends you to someone who knows what their doing unlike himself who is an idiot
He has a list of everything you've said / he's been told that helps
He keeps it on him at all times
He's pretty good about disappearing without anyone noticing so if he knows you need to be away from all the chaos he'll take you there
He won't exactly sit with you, he'll pace around instead
Like, he wants to be there for you, yes, and... He's not good with showing that
Tumblr media
Abraham Ford
He knows exactly what he's doing
He's probably sat you down to ask what he can do to help you because he really does want to help
He makes sure to have something in his pockets to give to you to fiddle with when you need a distraction
Big hands = covering your ears
He'll run the back of his hand along yours to let him know he knows and is trying to figure out what you need
He picks up on it a bit slower than most but he does
Sometimes he needs Glenn or Tara to point it out to him so he knows for sure
He will get you away without saying a word to anyone else
If anyone asks he'll say " None of your damn business " and walk off with you
If you start crying he'll cup your face in his hands and whipe your tears away with his thumbs
Tumblr media
Glenn Rhee
He's got this
He doesn't
He's trying though!
He picks up on it quickly though and lets anyone who he knows cat help you know
Abraham is his first option every time
He's probably the one to drag you away from a crowd and get you some place thats less stimulating then RUN for Abraham
He does want to help but he really doesn't know how
He's usually your second to last option so most of the time when you get to him you're already crying
He's good at comforting crying people
He'll get you some place safe and kiss your knuckles and use his sleeve to whipe yout tears
He's a sweetheart
He doesn't really understand whats going on but he wants to help none the less
He's probably asked you what happens and how you feel so he can imagine what you'd need
Tumblr media
Shane Walsh
Bold of you to assume this man knows jack shit
In all fairness he knows some from dealing with Carl for most of the boys life
He's been nominated most likely to send you to anyone but himself
When he does have to help he kinda pats your back and tries to dig through his pockets to find something for you to fiddle with
He kinda seems irritated with you when you bother him about it
Eye rolls every time
He'll cover your ears if you ask nicely
On rare occasions he'll take you somewhere less stimulating
He'll leave you there
Aside from being rude 24/7 he will try and help if he has to
He just doesn't like being helpful
Tumblr media
Negan
This man is so helpful
You still don't know why he's like that
Most of the time he picks up on it instantly and will try and help you best he can
He'll sit down with you in front of him facing him and he'll cover your hears, running this thumbs against anywhere they can reach
He likes it when you distract himself by playing with his hair
If you're lucky and you two are close enough he'll pull you into his lap
He'll get everyone to shut up and leave so you can be in a less stimulating environment
He's found and stolen a bunch of things you can mess with when you need too
He always focuses on your breathing, making sure its stable, always
He may act like an ass but he tries to tone it down
He knows how to help and will help anyway you want / need it
Tumblr media
Gabriel Stokes
He knows the basic amount of things
Probably asked Rick for help on what to do lets be honest
He didn't want to ask you directly to seem inconsiderate
He tries to avoid you to not make it all worse
It makes it worse
Someone had to tell him that avoiding you made you feel horrible and he felt bad
The amount of times he apologized was exhausting for you
Hr tries to help out a lot better now even if he has no clue really what he's doing
He'll give you something to fiddle with and help you take deep breaths before running to find someone who knows how to help you better
He has stated he wants to help but doesn't know how to nor does he want to be the main person you rely on
Note: This was not spell checked nor grammer checked! I apologize in advance for the mistakes

˙✧˖° SWEET TOOTH P.1 📷 ༘ ⋆。 ˚
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
warnings: gore descriptions of animals, mention of walkers (obv), and some cussing if you count that,,
pairing: soft!s4!carl grimes x reader
kind of an au where rick doesnt pass out and carl & judith reunite immediately after the prison era (if that makes sense)
Tumblr media
I HAD COMPLETELY forgotten why i was here, i was supposed to be scavenging.. but i got side tracked by a cluster of ducks off the edge of this pond.
they all looked oddly peaceful, even when walkers were snarling quietly behind the doors of the barricaded houses from when the world went to absolute shit.
my keys dangled loudly from my pant pocket as i crouched down, but i no other place to put them because i lost my bag a while ago, probably nabbed by a walker that was wandering around and i didn't notice.
a duck waddled by my feet slowly, something in its mouth. "whatcha got?" i whispered, the duck looking me straight in the eye before dropping the item on the dewed grass.
i picked it up slowly, inspecting it. i realized after a solid 15 seconds of looking at it that it wasn't anything interesting — just a piece of overly rusted metal.
i shoved it in my back pocket before getting up from my grass mound i had made, and set off to wherever i found solace in for the time being.
a duck quacked behind me loudly, but i ignored it before i heard the crunching of flesh. i turned around hesitantly, a sob slipping between my lips as i saw multiple ducks being torn apart piece by piece — blood spurting everywhere.
i turned around before the walkers could notice i was still there, using all of my strength to climb up one of those tall, darkened trees until they disappeared.
Tumblr media
EVEN AFTER SOME time, i was still stuck in that damn tree. why did i even fucking choose to go up here? i knew they wouldnt leave until the sun rose — chasing after it idiotically.
i think i started to doze off before i heard a gunshot ring through my ears — watching the walkers being shot from probably about two or three spots.
i sat up after they all dropped to the ground, my feet swung over the trunk. i guess the people that killed them hadn't realized my presence.
"who are you?" an older man had shouted out, i guess he didn't realize i was a damn kid but, better safe than sorry.
i called out my name before all three of them seemed to relax, the same man who yelled at me had beckoned me to come down.
"you all look rough," i said, crinkling my lip backwards for a second. i never really had a filter — but that didnt seem to affect any of them.
"yeah — we probably do," the woman said. her voice was nice, she sounded kind. well, some people are straight up horrible and they sound sweet as a damn peach tree.
"i'm michonne," the woman said, seeming to grin like she couldnt do anything but.
"i'm carl!" the young boy introduced himself enthusiastically, smiling. why did they all smile so damn big?
"rick," the older man husked out, not smiling. well, finally one with some sanity i guess.
after a few seconds of silence, carl handed me a piece of chocolate that was half melted. "do you like candy? i have more at the house —" he talked with a certain enthusiasm i couldnt reciprocate, especially after watching those ducks being torn apart.
rick interrupted him, "we can't show them the house! what if they have people?" rick whispered, but i heard every word.
"i lost my people 'bout a week ago. mainly just sticking to this neighborhood for now," i spoke up. i didn't want these damn country people to conspire about me.
"dad, let them come to the house!" carl pleaded, "they seem nice, and its already like nighttime now."
rick was in thought for a moment, putting his hand on his chin as his gun slacked in the holster.
"yeah — c'mon. it's gettin' late, kid."
Tumblr media
a/n: this sucks so bad but i'm making this a series to preoccupy myself LMAO

Warm
Carl Grimes x GN! Reader
Tumblr media
just a little blurb imagine thingie about my favorite boy <3
**************
His head was laying in the crook of your neck, snuggled comfortably under your chin. He snored quietly, the light filtering through the semi-opened blinds casting a small halo around him.
His hair, tangled yet soft, was splayed out over the pillow you shared. Legs tangled together, the blanket you both love so dearly pushed up to his chin, and the touch of the other keeping you both warm.
You look at him, having just woken up yourself, and a small smile appears on your face as he lets out a soft snore.
After a couple minutes, he begins shifting around in his sleep which signals to you that he's waking up. You move some hair out of his face, your heart warming from how sweet he looks.
"Good morning pretty boy.." you whisper as his eyes open slowly, a soft smile appearing on his face at the pet name. He cuddles closer to you, closing his eyes once more.
" Morning lovely" he mumbles against your neck, pressing a gentle kiss there. You lift his face up a bit, chuckling at the dried drool on his mouth.
"Did you sleep okay?" you ask quietly, being mindful of his sensitivity to noise this early in the morning. He nods, slowly moving to kiss your cheek before flopping back onto the pillow.
"You're so comfyyyy." He whispers, curling back up against you as you laugh.
"Am I really?" You ask teasingly, brushing his bangs off his eye. He nods again, kissing your jaw and finding your hand to hold.
"I love you a lot y'know." He says, glancing up at you. His face is tinted red, and his hair somehow became more tangled. When he takes your hand in his, you note how warm it feels. Now your chest has that same warmth and you know his does too.
"I love you so much darlin'." you smile softly, kissing his forehead. You close your eyes, letting out a satisfied sigh.
"You wanna go back to sleep?" You ask, looking down only to see he's already snoring again. You laugh quietly and kiss his forehead one last time before dozing off yourself, both of you with smiles on your face.
************
I love him.

You lied your stomach, resting between Carl's legs on his bed while he sat against the headboard. His hands gripped his sheets and blanket while yours flipped the pages of the magazine.
"Can you please move..at least a little?" he asked, face red and sweaty, breath airy and chest heaving. He looked down at you and you looked up at him with those big eyes that he loves more than anything. "Mm-mm." you hummed, slightly shaking your head, the vibrations of your hum sent shivers thought Carl's body. "ha..." he shook.
Your tongue licked on the vein at the bottom of his cock. Drool spilling from the sides of your mouth and dripping on to his sheets, wet patches soaking just one spot.
The only movement that Carl got was whenever you pried your mouth off of his cock whenever you felt his cock twitch. Even if he wasn't even close to cumming, you'd sit up and take your warm mouth away.
You continued flipping through the magazine, humming whenever you saw something you liked. The feeling was overwhelming. The feeling of your throat closing around him every now and then, your tongue moving around ever so slightly, your lips fitting perfectly around his cock.
He couldn't hold himself back, especially when you looked so good with his cock sitting in your mouth. How you look when you gaze up at him, how fucking messy you look with saliva dripping out of your mouth and down your chin, on to your neck...down your shirt..
Carl's eyes wandered down, following the trail of saliva, you felt his cock twitch in your mouth and you sat up. His cock slipping from between your lips. He let out a whine as he reached out for you, "Gotta pee, I'll be right back, don't worry." you smiled, "No no no.." he babbled, hands grabbing yours and pulling you near him.
You pushed Carl on the bed and walked towards the door, "Please, baby, please.." he begged, cock rock hard and tip red. "You'll be fine." you smiled, walking out of the room, leaving Carl alone in his room with blue balls.
