Golden lights danced around the cavern that held the palace of the fae. Each twinkling light was one sparkling, stuck up guard that Valko hated. They were on patrol, probably looking for him. Through the boughs of the palace they fluttered, from limb to limb, from branch to branch. The gossamer strands of glass that formed the palace tree was atwinkled with them. 

Music sounded, lutes and blaring wordless song as the fae king and queen approached home with their bad doggy butler in tow. 

Valko was home. His tail wagged. He would be good now that the royal’s eyes were aglow, searing white light. He wanted to please them so badly. He held tight to the king’s hand, who gave him a sunrise sort of smile. Even Queen Liita glanced back with her green eyes glowing, and he was so glad she was taking him back after he had been so bad. He didn’t even mind the moss and it’s dotting star flowers, wet and sticking between the pads of his feet. He would walk anything for them. Any surface.

Even the disgusting wet air seemed welcoming. The perfect cool.

King Mifispectuus raised his free hand in greeting. One perfect, beautiful hand wave at each of the golden lights of the guards, another at the purple lights and green lights that poked out of the bushes and tree roots, filling the fae hollow with light. The subjects. They were all here, drinking in the King’s glorious visage- as they should.

As he was.

“Worry not, our good friend Valko is back with us!” The King’s voice boomed, echoing through the cave. Behind the palace, the pool of water the cave held rippled with it.

Oh to be that water, becoming ringed by the very sound of that sonorous, delicious voice.

There was no answering cheer. Of course there wouldn’t be Valko thought to himself, feeling the bitter creep up in his chest. No one was happy the wolf demon was back. No one cared for the poor little butler, who had tried so hard to sit and work at their king and queen’s side. Everyone barely even cared about the king and queen! The ungrateful pieces of shit-

“Valko.” Queen Liita’s voice, at his side. She laughed, taking his free hand and running her fingers up and over his claws. “Come now. Don’t be so cruel to them, you did wrong us, after all.”

Ah. Yes. That. His tail drooped, and he curled his fingers over her hand. He had wronged them. Of course the people wouldn’t cheer that he had been returned. The cheering might happen later, when he did whatever good punishment he needed to fix things. 

“Come now,” King Mifispectuus said. 

And with that, they strode up and through the shimmering archway that cast a spell over the palace door. Each servant alighted to land beside them, and bow as they should to their royals. Valko kept his head lowered. He too, was a servant. Douglas Fir, the footmen beneath him, glared over his stupid multifaceted eyes at Valko, a sneer pulled over his craven cheeks. Valko bared his teeth at him.

As they walked the winding path, up the root of the trees, Valko could see the lights growing more varied. Reds, oranges, blues, greens- the nobility coming to gawk at him. All of them, with their stupid pointy faces who had looked down their noses (Or lack thereof) at him, come to watch the spectacle of the bad doggy dragged him by its gorgeous owners. None of those highborns were as good as the King and Queen were.

Pg. 1:

199X. H City, Tokyo. In a local famous family's mansion, the "Kujou Mansion", there sleeps a cursed doll. I...

Pg. 2:

Must destroy her.

Pg. 3:

Yashiki (looking at sealed Mary): "Alright. No changes."

Pg. 4:

"It's been a while since I've seen your face, Mary." This doll-- Mary-- has thrown my fate into disarray.

Mary isn't just a normal doll. Not only can she speak and move--

She also curses humans to death. A mysterious entity that spreads disaster.

Pg. 5:

Since the Taisho era, each generation of the Kujou family has managed her. But 50 years ago, a disaster occurred. The head of the Kujou family at the time was "marked".

However, Mary revived. I... Robbed of Kujou Masamune's memories, was dragged into a "death mark incident".

Yashiki talking to Mary: "... You called me by another name."

Flashback Mary: "Lord Yashiki ..."

Pg. 6:

4 months earlier, after losing my memories I took a visit to this place, Kujou Mansion.

Flashback Mary of exposition: "'Marked' people will soon lose their lives."

At that time I had been inflicted with the "mark"-- a telltale mark of death carved into my skin.

[tl note: this works way better in Japanese because they call the death marks "seals", which is kind of like a stamp. But "death stamp" in English sounds kind of corny so you just have to repeat mark over and over again]

Using the name Yashiki Kazuo, I was told "If you exorcise these spirits, your mark will be erased"... I believed Mary's lies.

I confronted many horrifying spirits.

Their strength reflected that of the grudges they held even after death.

Pg. 7:

Mary pretended to save me... Pretended to lead me. All the while, she was grinning, delighting in the sight of figures trapped and suffering in the abyss of death.

The "fear" and "despair" of cornered living beings... She relished it.

Pg. 8:

That's what Mary is.

Pg. 9:

Yashiki: "That's not all. You also ... Killed Saya."

My only blood relative, my little sister Saya, also became a sacrifice of the mark.

Yashiki: "No, that's not right. I was just as responsible for her death..."

Pg. 10:

The sequence of events was that before I-- Kujou Masamune-- lost my memory, I had been taking Mary apart as part of a plan to reinforce her seal.

Masamune talking to Saya: "Our problem is the doll's revival time.

"Our great grandfather placed this nenjibutsu inside of it but... that alone isn't enough to suppress its powers.

"We won't be able to purify the nenjibutsu before it wakes..."

Pg. 11:

Saya: "Temporarily removing the nenjibutsu from the doll's body and purifying it before returning it to its original location ... Is that your plan, Nii-san?"

Masamune: "Yes."

Removing the nenjibutsu will force the doll to wake... In that time, sacrifices will be inevitable. But leaving it alone will only invite a worse disaster.

Saya: "... Got it. Let's do that then."

Masamune: "You really think we should? Saya?"

Saya: "Well...

Pg. 12:

"I believe in you, Nii-san."

A few days later, I lost Saya...

After the death mark incident, Mary was successfully sealed, but.... I wonder if that was the correct choice... Even now I can't answer that.

Pg. 13:

Kujou Masamune believed the sacrifices were justified, but Yashiki Kazuo...

Both of them are "me" but as a result of losing my memories, something in me changed.

Sigh.

Yashiki: "Just in case, I'll replace the lid of Mary's box."

There are no abnormalities regarding Mary's sleeping state, but sometimes I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any flaws while monitoring her.

Pg. 14:

I understand that my actions have only slightly delayed the ticking of the clock.

The seal I've placed on her will only last 10 years.

In time, Mary will inevitably wake up again.

Yashiki, leaning in close to observe Mary: "Hm? Her hair..."

Pg. 15:

Yashiki: "Someday, I'll surely find a way to destroy you. Just wait, Mary..."

Pg. 16:

Scary Hallucination Mary waking up and grabbing his face: "When the time is right, I'll once again... be able to see you..."

Pg. 17:

Mary: "Lord Yashiki..."

Yashiki: "N-no..."

Five nights at Freddy's ass Mashita jumpscare: "YASHIKI!!"

[tl note: foxy jumpscare from fnaf 1 to be exact. just look that up and that's literally what he does in this panel]

Was that... A hallucination...?

Pg. 18:

Mashita, grabbing Yashiki's arm and pulling him away from Mary: "What the hell are you doing...! You want to die or something!?"

Yashiki: "Mashita..."

Mashita: "Do you even know how dangerous doing shit like that is!?"

Yashiki: "M... my bad."

Mashita: "It's fine, now put the fucking doll away, fast."

Pg. 19:

Mashita, standing outside: "You done? Chop-chop, let's head back to the mansion.

"Tch. That storehouse smells so dusty, it's unbearable."

This man is ex-detective Mashita Satoru. We survived being on the brink of death together during the death mark incident. He's one of my friends.

There are 12 total mark bearers who survived having the marks carved into them by spirits. It's thanks to them that I was able to survive.

Pg. 20:

*Mashita begins walking back to the mansion, Yashiki lags behind*

Flashback Saya: "Don't you understand that ominous energy!? Get a grip, Nii-san!"

... Saya also used to scold me.

Since I've lost my memories, one more thing has changed. in my previous life, I only had Saya by my side. But now... *Wistful staring at Mashita*

*They've returned to the mansion*

Yashiki: "... Hey, why did you come by today? Mashita."

Pg. 21:

Mashita: "This" *tosses him a magazine*

Yashiki: "Hm?"

Mashita: "'Spirit Doctor Yashiki Kazuo', huh"

Mashita: "Spirit Doctor .. huh..... Hehe..."

Yashiki: "... Did you just come here to make fun of me?"

Mashita: "Nope, came to talk about work.

"'A man who seeks the truth by embracing the supernatural'.

"I read this and it changed my mind...."

Pg. 22:

"That does seem like a job that would be suited for you, bastard*."

[* I talked about this before but he just uses bastard as a second person pronoun so he means "seems like a job suited for you" but he's literally saying "seems like a job suited for bastard". It's hard to put into English but he's probably not just randomly calling Yashiki a bastard that's just like. Because of the way Japanese works you kinda choose other people's pronouns more often than your own so this is His pronouns of choice. Bastard/bastards]

Yashiki: "Hold on with that talk... I already declined your invitation to do detective work..."

Mashita: "Listen.

"There's an increase in unexplainable phenomena happening in this city.

"For example, a school filled with mysterious disappearances... The origin of which are rumored to be 'death notices'.

"the academy people don't believe it, but there might be spirits involved. You could help them out."

Yashiki: "Give me a break... I don't have the same level of spiritual power my sister did. I have my hands full trying to find a way to exorcise Mary."

Mashita: "... You're really not interested? Then, how about this rumor?"

Pg. 23:

Mashita: "Hyakkiyagyou...

[Translator's note: Hyakkiyagyou means night parade of 100 ghosts]

"have you heard about it before from any particular sources?

"In colloquial terms..."

Yashiki: ❓😃

Mashita: "... Well, it doesn't have quite the same meaning as that.

"it's a phenomenon where spirits give birth to new spirits, causing great calamity to occur."

Yashiki: "...!"

Mashita: "And in that Hyakkiyagyou, there's always..."

Pg. 24:

Mashita: "A doll spirit at the center of it."

Yashiki: "Wh-"

Mashita: "It's understood that frequent and inexplicable events are the work of those doll spirits. The possibility that a hyakkiyagyou will be involved is high.

"If we trace the source of events to a doll spirit...

"By extension, couldn't you get closer to solving the mystery of Mary?"

*Mashita smirk, Yashiki worried face*

Mashita: "Looks like that finally stirred some interest in ya, huh."

Pg. 25:

Mashita: "Anyhow, it's not like I know anything about Mary's origin either. There's no documents left in Kujou Mansion from when she first appeared 60-70 years ago. All the leads are too old, I had no choice but to give up."

Yashiki, looking at his rotary phone: "Will you give me the details of the case request over the phone?"

Mashita: "Christ, just get a cellphone already.

"Alright, see ya. That's all I wanted to say.

"... Actually, I've got one last piece of advice.

"Stop fucking acting like that."

Pg. 26:

Yashiki: "Ah.. If it's about Mary, I understand."

Mashita: "Even if that thing's* sealed away, she can still sense your presence. She's obsessed with you."

[* he refers to her as 奴, which usually I'd translate as "that guy". Deeply northeastern/Midwestern American of him. "youse guys better not be fahcking arahnd" - Mashita at the hyakkiyakou I presume]

Yashiki: "Obsessed... Huh."

Mashita: "Tch."

Yashiki: "Because I touched her carelessly..."

Mashita: "Nope. You don't fucking understand anything. What you were doing back then..."

Pg. 27:

Mashita: "Those weren't the eyes of someone looking at someone they hate."

Pg. 28:

Mashita: "That's why darkness continues to surround you.

"Get it? What you should fucking do is exorcise that bitch*.

"Don't you agree?"

[*he uses アイツ for this one which would also often be translated to "that guy" or "that thing" but since I already used "that thing" and he's at the end of his rope yelling at Yashiki here he can be a little meaner I think. Would a pro translate this differently? Maybe! Do I like to be a little silly? Yeah]

Pg. 29:

Mashita: "She's a spirit.

"Dead people and living people are incompatible with each other! If you can't accept that...

"You'll get dragged in with them."

Mashita: *sigh* "Think it over. Even if you don't want it to happen, eventually that time will come."

Yashiki: *depression sfx*

Pg. 30:

Mashita's right. But what should I do...?

Investigating spirits and relieving them of their resentment...

I was able to solve the incident by empathizing with each spirit.

Just like that, if I empathize with Mary...

Would I be able to exorcise her...?

Flashback Saya: "I believe in you, Nii-san."

Yashiki: "Ah... I get it now..."

Pg. 31:

Yashiki: "I'll try it."

At some point I'll surely reach an agreement with Mary.

As the person who released Mary into the world...

As the head of the Kujou family...

This is what I should do to atone for what I've done!

Schoolgirl A: "Hey, hey, is it true that 'The Departed' is at this academy?"

Schoolgirl B: "it's totally true, right? In order to kill us, it's disguised itself as human!

"Do you know year 2's Takai? They said they went missing but actually... They were killed by The Departed!"

Schoolgirl A: "You're lying, right!?"

Schoolgirl B: "There was a death notice pasted on the bulletin board after all...

"I wonder who's gonna be next~!"

One Piece and Media Literacy

So this entire post was born out of me trying to understand why there are certain readings and interpretations of one piece that get under my skin so much. I like to think that I am normally pretty open to different readings of a text. I’m an English major, literally 90% of my degree is discussing different interpretations of fictional media, and that often involves encountering people with different readings than my own. That is good, and I think that as long as a reading can be backed up with good faith textual evidence it’s a valid reading. And that was the sticking point for me,  that the takes that I kept seeing had logic behind them. I could see how and why the person sharing them came to the conclusion they did. But, what I realized is that even though these conclusions did make sense, it also relied on an incredibly literal, surface level take on the scene that also oftentimes ignored the context of how and why the moment was taking place. In other words, a lack of media literacy. 

I’m going to use two scenes that I personally view as getting misconstrued as a result of this as examples. The first one is Shanks' conversation with Whitebeard, particularly this sentence Shanks says in response to Whitebeard questioning Shanks on the loss of his arm. 

I have seen this moment be interpreted as Shanks intentionally losing his arm to teach Luffy a lesson in leadership, that what makes a good captain is one who is willing to put themselves and their life on the line for the people they care about. I do think that is a lesson Luffy took away from this moment, but I don’t think that this scene is framing it as intentional. The meeting between  these two characters is grandiose, and the dialogue they use exemplifies that. Just before this, Whitebeard asked Shanks “What enemy did you give that left arm to?” (One Piece, Ch. 434, pg. 11).  Whitebeard isn’t asking Shanks if he literally gave his arm to an enemy, but rather asking who he lost his arm to, but in a verbose way. As such, Shanks doesn’t mean that he intentionally gave up his arm. And while he could have said that a sea monster took it, he instead switched focus from the thing that took it to the person who he lost it for. It shows Shanks' mindset towards losing his arm, and how he does not actually view it as a loss, as it was lost saving a kid Shanks saw potential in, a kid who would be a part of the new era. 

I will also say that the implication of Shanks intentionally losing his arm makes him a worse person, and cheapens his and Luffy’s relationship. The implication being that the emotional distress we saw him in when Luffy was kidnapped and in peril was at least to a point faked. A person in distress is not worrying about what lesson they can impart onto the person they’re saving, and as such saying that Shanks could have in that moment decided to intentionally give up his arm paints him as a much colder, more calculating character, which I would argue would be to the detriment of his character.

And I know that this reading is in part trying to explain why Shanks, a very powerful character, would lose his arm to a sea monster in the East Blue. But this was Shanks from 12 years ago, I don’t think it takes a massive leap in logic to assume that he simply wasn’t as strong of a character back then. Add to that his attention mainly being focused on making sure he got to Luffy in time, and I think him losing his arm in that moment makes perfect sense. 

The second scene is when Rob Lucci suggests that Luffy’s use of gear 2 is causing him to shave years off his life. 

What Lucci says here is often taken at face value, and then applied to every other gear we have seen Luffy use. This is also information that is stated as fact, more often than not. That every time Luffy uses gear 2 or 3 (pre - ts) or gear 4 or 5 (post - ts) that he is taking a couple years off his life. And as this all stems from Rob Lucci, we have to ask 1: Is Rob Lucci knowledgeable enough to actually make this claim? And 2: Is he a trustworthy source of information? 

The first question is up for debate. Lucci could very well make an educated guess about the strain Luffy is putting on his body. But at the end of the day he is only going off of very limited knowledge about both Luffy and his devil fruit. The second question, I would argue, is a resounding no. Lucci is a member of CP9 (now CP0) an intelligence agency that focuses on infiltration. Part of Lucci’s job is to lie and coerce people. This is also the man that killed his fellow soldiers that had been taken as POWs to prevent the county they were fighting from having the upper hand. That is not the kind of person whose word you can take at face value.

It is also worth noting that the broader scene that this line of dialogue belongs to involves Lucci trying to psyche Luffy out by telling him that there is no hope of him or his friends winning, using the claim that he is shortening his life, as well as information that his crew is in a tunnel that will soon flood, killing them. And while some of this info is true, that is not the reasoning behind Lucci telling him it. He wants Luffy to be discouraged and to feel like there is no possible way for him to win. The information he tells to Luffy does not have to be true for this tactic to work. 

What I’m trying to get at here is that analysis that does not take in the broader context of the story, or the established characterization of the people in the specific scene being analyzed leads to a reading based in ignorance, as not all of the information is being considered. It can also lead to misunderstandings within the fandom, like how I’ve seen it stated that Luffy using gear 5 shortens his life span. There is no canon backing for this, other than the literal interpretation of what a villain said about an entirely different gear nearly 20 years ago in real time. Or it can unintentionally paint a character that has previously been characterized as deeply caring for the protagonist as being cold and distant instead, more focused on making the next generation is strong - both physically and as leaders - than about saving the protagonist's (who at the time was a child) life.

Summary of My Stranger Things Fanfic Year 2024

2024 was a pretty good year for fanfic for me. All Stranger Things and Steddie, because the obsession has me in its grasp.

I published 24 stories this years with a total of 85,693 words.

That's 11 more stories than last year, but under half the words, but then one story last year was over 100K and another tipped 57K.

Steddie still has my heart and looking at my WiP folder will continue to do so. Thanks to everyone who has commented on, liked, and reblogged my stories.🥰

It was also so much fun to take part in my first big bangs since back in LJ days.💖💖

Chaptered Fics

Sight: Now I See You - Steddie (COMPLETE) ~26K wds (13 ch) - PG13 The final battle with Vecna was victorious, but not everyone came out unscathed. Steve wakes up in the hospital high as a kite with something wrong with his eyes. Robin’s right there to assure him it’s nothing permanent, but something weird is going on, and he needs answers. That there appear to be two government factions in town, one of which is hunting El even though she saved the world, does not help. Neither does the feeling there’s someone watching him. It’s all a mess and Steve can’t sit back and let the others fix it by themselves.

Wolf in the Light - Steddie (COMPLETE) ~45K wds (23 CH) explicit - only on AO3 Steve has been keeping a big secret: he’s a werewolf from a long line of werewolves. Only problem is, he’s a complete failure at it. He can’t even shift, but it does make him a bit harder to kill, so he thought he’d found his perfect niche keeping the kids and his secret safe after ‘83. With their plan to end Vecna only half successful and Eddie bleeding out, he has no choice but to reveal the truth and try and convince his friends that werewolves are real. That would be enough of a task for anyone, but to his shock, his heritage has an even bigger surprise in store, and of course, there’s Max to worry about too.
