Dear life,

Ever since I was a little girl, I always thought you were something wonderful. Of course, I still think of you this way, but… But if you are so wonderful how can you be so mean at the same time? Is this supposed to be some kind of lesson you and the Watcher are trying to teach me? Because if so, I must admit, dear life, I actually learned something very important.

As a result of recent events, I learned that…

You can be a good student;

You can be a friendly person with lots of friends, always smiling politely at everyone...

But it doesn't matter at all, because all it takes is one secret that you accidentally witnessed, one secret about your headmaster and teacher…

One secret that was repeated to someone…

And then repeated again.

One secret and one worried brother who decided to confront the headmaster about that secret…

And one headmaster, desperate to maintain his reputation.

All it takes is those three things to accuse you of being a liar.

And then, when you don't want to apologize for the truth and you start arguing with people you shouldn't be arguing with…

All that's left to do is pack your things and get ready to leave the school you love because no one wants liars there. Even those who tell the truth.

she found that she couldn't stand it, seeing them together. she'd been on a sabbatical in europe for the last year, having left shortly after their engagement announcement. for the longest time she couldn't figure out why the news had bothered her so much. but after grueling day of grueling day, searching her heart for the answers, she finally realized; she was stupidly in love with este. and what was worse? so was her brother. she could see it each time he looked at her, each time they were in a room altogether. and that was all well and fine - charlotte could deal with that - if only este returned her brothers love. instead... instead, she looked as if charlotte hung the stars in the fucking sky.

her breathing coming in shallow little pants as she escaped to the terrace for fresh air, she leaned against the railing to provide herself a sense of stability. her heart felt like a constant ache in her chest at the first sight of her best friend, at the sight of that familiar smile that felt like home and warmth... and then her eyes had trailed down to the spot where she was connected to charlotte's brother and that had been the end of it. closing her eyes, she cursed herself out loud at having made such a scene when she excused herself; she hoped her sister would make some excuse for her about not feeling well.

there were footsteps in the hall, charlotte could make them out, and she sighed. her head drifted just to the left side and she could make out este's silhouette there in the doorway. "you should get back to your party; they'll miss you." what she wanted to say was forbidden, clenched between teeth so as to not escape. don't marry him, don't marry him, don't marry him...

I talked in another post about the decision to give Elizabeth Felicity's Beforever meet dress and move her meet dress to go with other party clothes, but the long and short of it is that, like the other Best Friend dolls, Elizabeth's collection is smaller than the number of outfits in the pattern I've been following, so I gave her several of the dresses that I hadn't used for Felicity. I also used photos of costume hobbyists and employees at Colonial Williamsburg to fill out her collection.

There's a significant shift in the silhouette during this decade. Skirts are getting narrower, hairstyles and hats are getting larger, and casual styles like the round gown are starting to come into vogue. Rachel, my OC representing the Jewish community of Rhode Island, and her best friend Abigail, are most often dressed in simple, high-waisted gowns with colorful sashes. Their formal dresses are white with pink or blue sashes, a common style for girls of all ages and for very small boys--both colors were popular for either gender.

When we talk about a company like AG trying to correct for its lack of representation for any marginalized American population, it can be understandable and simultaneously frustrating for the one example to focus on a major turning point in that population's history. Addy and Rebecca are similar in that way: on the one hand, if there's only going to be one period in history to represent this population, the end of the Civil War and the Jewish immigration boom from Russia in the early 20th century are obvious choices, but does there have to only be one? Cecile and Melody--and Claudie, one hopes--show otherwise. So if there were going to be a second Jewish historical, Rhode Island in 1790 is my first pick. George Washington's letter to the Jewish community of Newport still resonates with American Jewish communities today. His promise of a government that gives "to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance" is a dream that has never been fully realized, but has never been forgotten.

The period of English political history known as the Regency and the period of fashion history named after it don't perfectly align: although the political period had not yet begun, when we look at the high waists and narrow silhouettes that begin during this period we usually describe them as being Regency fashion.

Part of the problem with doing a project based on dates is that I have severe dyscalculia. Although I drew the canon American Girl dolls and Best Friends more than a year ago, it took me until this week to realize I had Lydia and Caroline one year older than canon. For the time being, I'm going to proceed as I had them, but I'm planning a redraw of the first series I did, and when I do that I'll move them and anyone else I didn't get quite right to the right birth year.

Republic Pictures Horror Collection will be released on May 21 via Kino Lorber. The two-disc set features four horror films produced by Republic Pictures: The Lady and the Monster, The Phantom Speaks, The Catman of Paris, and Valley of the Zombies.

1944's The Lady and the Monster is directed by George Sherman and written by Dane Lussier and Frederick Kohner, based on Curt Siodmak's 1942 novel Donovan's Brain. Vera Ralston, Richard Arlen, and Erich von Stroheim star.

1945's The Phantom Speaks is directed by John English and written by John K. Butler. Richard Arlen, Stanley Ridges, Lynne Roberts, Tom Powers, Charlotte Wynters, and Jonathan Hale star.

1946's The Catman of Paris is directed by Lesley Selander and written by Sherman L. Lowe. Carl Esmond, Lenore Aubert, Adele Mara, Douglass Dumbrille, Gerald Mohr, and Fritz Feld star.

In The Lady and the Monster, a scientist (Erich von Stroheim) and his two assistants (Vera Hruba Ralston, Richard Arlen) keep a dead criminal's brain alive. In The Phantom Speaks, the vengeful spirit of an executed killer takes possession of a scientist to take revenge on those who wronged him, and a newspaper reporter becomes suspicious. In The Catman of Paris, an amnesiac Frenchman (Carl Esmond) blames himself for deeds done with the mark of a beast. In Valley of the Zombies, a woman falls under the hypnotic spell of a resurrected madman.

On December 8th 1746 Charles Radcliff, the English Jacobite was executed.

The Radcliff's were a Catholic family from Northumberland and long-standing links to the exiled Stuart line.

The youngest brother of the Earl of Derwentwater, Charles Radcliff was a wild-philandering character in his youth, and was said to have fathered a number of illegitimate children. He was a particularly ardent Jacobite and took an active part in the Up Rising of 1715.

Although only twenty-two years old at the time, he was given the command of the Earl’s troops, and afterwards praised for his strong leadership and courage. After being taken prisoner at Preston, he was convicted of high treason, but escaped from Newgate in December 1716.

He spent the rest of his life on the Continent, marrying the wealthy Charlotte Maria Livingstone, the Countess of Newburgh, in Brussels in 1724. He remained at the centre of Jacobite intrigue, moving in 1738 with his family to Rome, and becoming a well known figure at the Court of James VIII.

Prince Charlie landed in Scotland and marched into a cheering Edinburgh in September, leading Charles Radcliff, too, to sail for Scotland in November of that year.

Now 52 years old, he would be one of the few lords to participate in both the great Jacobite rebellions …….. but he was captured at sea, condemned under his former sentence, and beheaded on Tower Hill on this day, 1746.

Charles Radcliff is remembered as being one of the bravest and most loyal supporters of the House of Stuart. If he had not escaped in 1716, Charles would in all probability have been pardoned, but the government was particularly harsh on families and individuals seen as habitual or repeat offenders.

Audrey: based on Kitty Fisher and Charlotte Hayes, born 1750, turned 1780 at the age of 30. Well-to-do sex worker, coquette, disowned daughter of a Viscount. Abolitionist. She/they, bisexual-polyam. Vampire.

Camille: based on Mary Wollstonecraft and various French Revolution ladies. Audrey’s half sister, unlike her, never disowned, still hates her Viscount father. Abolitionist, anti-monarchist, pamphlet writer, and social climber. Turned into a vampire in 1790. She/her, bi. Vampire.

Artémise: Dutch and Black-Creole New York socialite, spy for the culper ring, and violinist. An informant, a fashionista, bit of diva, excellent listener. Will sell you out to Benjamin Tallmadge. She/her, bi.

Benjamin Fisher: Benjamin Tallmadge, vampire/anti-hero arc. He/him, bi (closeted). Staff to Washington, from New York, trying really hard to be good, but vampirism won’t let him. Turned by Audrey in 1781. Vampire.

Charles: Colonel in the British army. Good at following orders, only doesn’t like his job. It’s a constant existential crisis, he knows neither side is right, he’s sworn to the British by duty not by choice. Scottish and French, English born. Based vaguely on Ross Poldark. He/him, bi. Has a deceased wife and daughter he’s still mourning.

Eliott: Spy for the British army. Follows orders for social gain and security, not cause he wants to. Poet turned spy, he/him, bi. Much like Tallmadge, he is a young man, having control taken from him far too often. Really just doesn’t want to be hung as a traitor to the crown. Irish and Catholic. Hates all of the army, expect Major André and Simcoe.

Carlotta aka Charlotte: French socialite, unknowing informant to the Patriots. She/her, bi. Somewhere between culper ring spy and French nobility looking to escape France due to pending revolution back home. 1/2 characters here who are not made for battle situations.

Edith: Maryland based loyalist, loyalist out of love for her family. She/her, bi (closeted). Catholic but very English. A civilian caught in a bad situation, didn’t do anything wrong, unless love for one’s family is a sin. Honestly reminds me of a Liberty’s Kids character and Sarah Livingston (Turn) but younger. Of marriageable age (24), good natured, well meaning, loyalty to what she deems moral just has her in a bad situation.

Harriet: Boston based dress maker and painter, sometimes pamphlet writer. Free woman of global majority (colour), Black and Welsh. She/her, bi. Yet another civilian caught in a war they didn’t ask for. Declares neutrality to survive, probably more on the side of the continental army, but she’d rather not the gallows.

Verity, Nancy & Sally/the tombeor polycule: their last name isn’t actually their last name, it’s a French title meaning “performer.” Like a code name. A polycule of three black/Irish sex worker women who are all dating each other and their clients, at the same time, she/her(s) all bi-poly-sapphic. Sex workers and spies for the culper ring, but their loyalty isn’t a cheap. Technically they declare themselves neutral in the war, it’s all lies.

Many people have that one person in their family they simply cannot stand. This type of person doesn’t even have to be cruel or extremely stupid, but there is just something about them that makes you roll your eyes uncontrollably every time you see them. For Charlotte, such a person was her brother-in-law: Joseph Harris.

Again, Joseph may not have been the nicest person, but he also wasn't someone who could be compared to evil stepmothers mistreating some orphans. (Which was a bit annoying, because since Charlotte had to be an orphan, she could at least be a tragic fictional character.)

But no, honestly speaking Joseph Harris was only slightly stupid and very annoying. And now he was talking to the headmaster, while Charlotte was anxiously waiting for him to leave the office and take her home, where she would probably be lectured about her behavior.

“Thank you, Mr. Phillips. And I am once again sorry for her behavior. No, no. Do not worry. My wife and I understand your decision perfectly. Maybe she will learn some good manners at home and the stupidity will disappear from her mind. Have a good day.” Charlotte tensed a bit when she heard Joseph's voice, and then she saw her brother-in-law leaving the office. At the same moment, Emma grabbed her arm, pulling her towards her, and Charlotte exactly knew what she wanted her to do. Both girls smiled, forming a unity against the men.

“Mr. Harris” Emma started. “Good to see you. Is that a new hat? Very lovely!”

The man frowned.

For some unknown reason, Joseph had a really strong opinion on modern hats – he always complained they did not suit his face and felt annoyed at every compliment about hats. Or maybe he just hated hats. Emma knew this very well, of course, but he had no idea about it.

“Yes, thank you” he sighed, clearly tired with this whole situation. “Charlotte, let's go. We have a train and I've already wasted enough time because of your ideas.”

Charlotte looked at Emma and hugged her tightly.

“Emma…” she started, but her friend stopped her.

“Don't say goodbye. We will see each other again. We will always be friends, right?”

“Always” agreed Charlotte, holding back tears. “I will write letters to you. I promise.”

Emma smiled, and hugged her one more time.

“Great. I have to go to class now. But I'll see you soon. And remember. I will always be there for you.”

“Youthful friendships are so silly,” said Joseph when Emma finally left. “In two years, you probably won't remember who she was, but now you're acting like the world is ending."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. Why on earth was he so annoying? Unfortunately he did not stop talking.

"Come on now. You already caused us too many problems. I don't want to miss the train because of you”

But Charlotte didn't feel like leaving. Was this really the end of her story here? It was too soon. She wanted to go to another class. Spend time with Emma and Bessie. Talk to a few other people. Ask Mrs. Thomson why she didn't say anything when she was accused of lying. Unfortunately, it was too late for that.

With tears in her eyes, Charlotte left the school.

The OCs in this post that are mine are Charlotte and Jane, Rachel and Abigail, and Hannah and Delia (they're in pairs because I did the Best Friends series based on @americangirlstar's suggestions, and in the process created a Best Friend for each of my own characters). Héloise and Aoife belong to @autistickirstenlarson, Violette belongs to @getintothesun, and Charlotte belongs to @gardner-n-pardner.

While putting together previous installations I became aware that I have the birth dates wrong for several of the canon characters. I'm planning a redo for the canon character set, eventually, so please do let me know if I'm wrong about anyone. I might already know, but since I have pretty severe dyscalculia as well as ADHD it's not bad to have the info available in multiple places.

This is it, as narrow as skirts are going to get for about a century. Everyone was really into looking like Greek and Roman statues, so white dresses in drapey fabrics were the rage for young women. Caroline and Lydia are a little young for that style though. Before I decided to add the Best Friends to the project, I put Lydia's dress in Caroline's collection, but then I did make Lydia and made the green dress her meet outfit. Now that I'm thinking about a redo, I want to give Caroline a completely different dress, maybe that also has those sheer sleeves.

The switch from wearing their skirts calf-length with visible pantalettes to ankle-length might have been an exciting growing-up moment for Caroline and Lydia. At the same time, the silhouettes are getting less flowy with stiffer fabrics and little puffs on the sleeves. Meanwhile, in New Mexico, I gave Clara styles based on illustrations of Ana and Francisca as well as leftovers from Josefina's collection, and then afterward decided to do a siblings series, so...whoops again, I guess.

The early Regency was all about long, narrow lines, but now the width is coming back, along with growing sleeve puffs and lots of horizontal lines. Frills, lace, and bows are starting to show up on skirts, and hairstyles are starting to get tall again. It's coincidence that @getintothesun's Violette is the same age as my Hannah and Delia, but drawing them together is turning out to be a fun exercise: Hannah and Delia are comparatively plainly-dressed kids, appropriate to their hardworking lives on the Erie Canal, while Violette has a richness in her wardrobe that works with her comfortable life in the Louisiana warmth.

This decade for the first time we have two members of the @autistickirstenlarson extended universe in play! Each of her characters has a strong color palette for their collection: not every outfit incorporates the theme colors, but enough do to feel like the character herself has a preference. For Héloise, the go-to colors are blue and brown. For Aoife it's green and cream.

I struggled a lot with finding accurate, non-exoticizing references for Singing Bird, as I did for Kaya and Speaking Rain. As a result, it feels necessary to include a disclaimer to the effect that this project should not be viewed as an accurate source for Nimiipuu, Salish, or Lakota clothing. Please do not cite me as a reference. While it was easy to find examples of modern-day Nimiipuu , Salish, and Lakota regalia, and there are photos of individual garments from the 18th and 19th centuries on display in museums, it was hard to get a feel for what an outfit might accurately have looked like, without entering into a level of research that would have been way beyond the scope of this project. That said, I do intend to eventually go back and redo the canon characters, so if someone seeing this does have access to and familiarity with good 18th and 19th century Nimiipuu, Salish, and Lakota clothing references, and the time and patience to share it with me, I will absolutely use them in the redo. For now, please know that the probable inaccuracies in my drawings of these characters are not intended as disrespect, and as always I am open to knowledgeable correction.
