How can a translation be so right and so wrong at the same time?

The kid is currently in his Star Wars era, so I re-watched the fandom classic Star War The Third Gathers: Backstroke of the West

What's that you ask? Well. People used to be able to buy pirated DVDs on the street in China. These were often of pretty awful quality, some of them clearly filmed in theaters (on the plus side, you could always buy the latest movies!). Anyway, most of them came in their original version with Chinese and English subtitles.

Now because nobody in China actually gave a fuck about the *English* subtitles, they tended to be bad automated re-translations of the Chinese subtitles and, as such, pretty hilarious. Some of them were pretty epic and got famous, including the "English" subtitles for Star Wars Ep III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), which came out during the peak era of bootlegged DVDs. It included classics such as:

"Do you fuck on I"

"Only guarantee my cuckoldry the safety"

And of course the truly famous classic: "Do not waaaaaaaant!!!"

And because the subtitles were so great and fandom tends to be filled with dedicated folks, someone made a dubbed version, and re- added new "English" dialogue based on the Chinglish subtitles.

Sometimes im reminded that Malaysian tend to have like the habit of switching up languages with no big issues and forgot that not everyone can do that

I went to the local food market, the type that is out in the open with several stalls all placed together closely and its crowded and stuff right

So I talk to my brother and sister in English, Mandarin + Cantonese to my mom and dad. If we're ordering food from the aunty uncle, we either use hokkien / fujian or Malay (depending the race of the seller)

There was a neighbouring customer who were white(think they were from America judging from the bag and general mannerism) that started talking to my dad and he was just saying how insane we sounded switching languages around HAHA

listening is going to be the death of me - trying to listen to chinese without some sort of visual component only results in me completely zoning out and missing everything being said and/or comprehending in the moment and then promptly forgetting what i just heard and/or thinking one word is another because of no context and then completely misunderstanding the sentence
