Warning: This story contains distressing details.
Songwriter, educator and human rights advocate Buffy Sainte-Marie says the Pope's upcoming visit to Canada and expected apology for the church's involvement in the residential school system won't mean a thing if he doesn't call for the dissolution of the Doctrine of Discovery.
"The apology is just the beginning, of course," she said.
The doctrine is an international framework based on a series of decrees from the Pope, called "papal bulls," that were released in the 1400 and 1500s. This framework laid the legal and moral foundation for how Canada and other countries came to be colonized by European settlers.
As Sainte-Marie put it, "The Doctrine of Discovery essentially says it's okay if you're a [Christian] European explorer … to go anywhere in the world and either convert people and enslave, or you've got to kill them."

This is the Church of Saint Mary of Sesimbra, also known as Parish Church of Saint Mary of the Castle (Santa Maria do Castelo), Church of Our Lady of the Castle or Church of Our Lady of the Consolation.
This catholic temple was originally built inside the walls of Sesimbra in the year of 1165, after the conquest of the town by the king Afonso Henriques of Portugal. However, most of the original Romanesque church was erased by the restorations that took place during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries. The interior of this church is illustrative of the tastes of the XVIII Century when it comes to religious architecture, and to be honest, there is nothing wrong about it.

Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Pukekaraka, Otaki, New Zealand: A place dedicated to Mary; a place of peace, a place of pilgrimage, a place of miracles. Built in 1858-1859, and considered to be New Zealand's oldest surviving Catholic church still in use. All of the Māori living in this area had very strong spiritual practices that dominated their daily lives.  They had intimate relationships with their beliefs and practices in that spirituality. St. Mary's Church, Pukekaraka Marae, Otaki Catholic Church
