the grand master post of all things D3
made by a person who definitely thinks about a district that was never actually canonically described a little too much
so. let’s get into the fun stuff!
District Three consists of two main “areas” or zones: the Stills and the city of Stepanov, which is the main city in Three, named after the first mayor of Three, who’s full name was Hewlett Stepanov. It is still a popular name in Three, especially with the wealthy, and the Stepanov family are respected highly by citizens.

General Info:
District Three consists of the majority of Idaho/the Idaho Panhandle, some of west Washington, and east Montana. There also a tiny, tiny little bit of modern Oregon. D3 borders One to the south and east and Seven to the north and west.
The area that is considered “District Three” is not all used for living and the majority of it is forested land. Due to this, lumberyard workers from Seven travel the short distance from the two districts to harvest many of these trees. This is also true for miners from One in terms of gems.
Three makes and produces the vast majority of all technology used in Panem, cars, glass, and various drugs.
Child labor is a major issue, as children from the Stills begin working at factories as early as age four/five. Much of the time, there is an encompassing building attached to the factory that your parents work at for children who work.
Stepanov:
Saint Stepanov (typically shortened simply to Stepanov during the ADD¹/DHG²/BSR³ era) is the main city of Three where wealthier citizens live, or there version of Twelve’s “merchant class”. Adults who live here work as software developers and engineers, factory owners or managers, analysts, programmers, etc. These citizens typically live good lives with fulfilling jobs and nine times out of ten, no one will ever have to worry about where the food on the table comes from.
Only one year in Hunger Games existence were both children reaped were from the wealthier families of Three. The 48th Annual Hunger Games came as a shock to everyone, when both Wiress Lisiecki and Fortran Stepanov were reaped.
The square in Stepanov is where the Reapings take place. All children of reaping age can fit, but families usually have to stand in accompanying streets or are pushed to the back.

The Stills:
The majority of Three’s population lives in poverty or on the cusp (about 150k out of 190k), in the area called the Stills, which consists of five separate neighborhoods/towns joined together by a square in the middle called The Interface. The Interface is where the main marketplace for the Stills is, including a popular bar called Harlow’s.
The majority of the Stills inhabitants work as factory workers/laborers. Almost always, these workers work in these jobs for their entire lives. They are not given the same opportunities as the citizens from Stepanov are. Due to this, a lot of animosity from both sides of the divide is very prevalent in everyday life.
Citizens from the Stills are taught from a young age about doing whatever it takes to survive. Because of this, tributes from the Stills typically do better in the Hunger Game than their wealthier counterparts.
— Midtown:
Midtown is the in between area to the Stills and Stepanov. Only around 10k of the overall population live here. Inhabitants of Midtown have jobs that include factory manager, training jobs, and about half of the jobs not pertaining to Three’s industry. People from Midtown are teachers, business/shop owners, and various other occupations.
Midtown is on the other side of Stepanov to the Stills, a short walk down a small hill. Due to the small population, few tributes in the Hunger Games are from Midtown, but there are exceptions. Examples of this include Circ Bauer, male tribute of the 10th Annual Hunger Games, and Matilyne Sanchez, female tribute of the 47th Annual Hunger Games. The 45th Games was the only year where both tributes from Three were from Midtown, with Coball Alves-Torres and Maple Adomaitytė.

As of the Third Quarter Quell, there were five residents of Three’s Victors Village.

Additional Information:
Three is not an “Anyone But A Career” district. They have never been one.
Every single time a Three wins the Hunger Games, a victor from One precedes them. Every. Single. Time. Atlas was preceded by Harrison Sanford, Beetee by Paris Sanford, Wiress by Zircon (“Connor”) Lewis, Marie by Emerald Reeves, and Haskell by Augustus Braun.
Three’s victors are sometimes seen as a buffer between the careers and the outlying districts. Most of the citizens of Three don’t have a problem with the Careers, except for some people from Stepanov.
In Stepanov, residents celebrate what children refer to as “Tree Time” during December—families use left over trees from the workers from Seven and display them in their homes with generational ornaments. Every year, at least one new ornament is added to the tree. Some families use breakable plastic to put new year’s resolutions inside of the ornaments and then break them on New Year’s to read them with family and friends at midnight.
Every Saturday, business owners in Midtown set up a marketplace for citizens, primarily ones from Stepanov.
In the Stills, names are very important. Due to the extreme poverty many are trapped in, a common phrase is, “I have nothing but my first and last”, meaning their first and last name.

𝙗𝙪𝙮 𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙚?
You met Yuuki three semesters ago in your Intro to Software Engineering Class- one of your very first classes as you both started university. And although you’ve since changed majors to something a bit more your speed since then, you and Yuuki had a bond that somehow managed to grow past language barriers and summer breaks. However, the fact that you thought he was really cute helped out a lot. And the fact that you seemed to know the answer to his every question about campus also kept you in contact even in the times when you didn’t have classes together. But this time you both lucked out with a humanities class that just so happened to fit into both of your schedules.
So it’s only natural that you would both take it together. And it was only natural that the two of you would work together for every group project. And it was only natural that you’d end up in his dorm room one day after classes when his roommate was at work, trying to pump out the remainder of this project out in one go.
But then, you saw it.
You didn’t know how long it had been there for. But once you noticed it, it was hard not to notice it anymore. It felt like no matter where you looked, it was just staring at you. Somehow, someway.
Eventually, Yuuki did notice your sudden awkwardness. And eventually, he did understand where it was coming from too. You could tell by how he shifted his legs and turned away his head to hide his rapidly reddening cheeks from you. But a couple of minutes of typing away at your respective computers in his dorm room did nothing to hide the little growing problem. In fact, it only seemed to become an even bigger distraction than before.
“It…it doesn’t hurt,” He told you when you finally bit the bullet and addressed the elephant (or rather, the elephant’s trunk) in the room. He was still refusing to look at you. And it was starting to look like he’d rather be anywhere else but here, despite it being his own room. “Sometimes, it has a mind of its own. It’ll go away shortly. Don’t worry about it.”
You tried to nod and look away. Tried to focus on something else. He let you sit at his desk while he took the spare saucer chair that had looked like it had seen better days. At least at the desk, you could turn your head and zone in on your work. Or maybe check out all the little nicknacks he had lining his desk. You even tried to read some of the Japanese characters he had on his desk. Letters, notes, and all sorts of things he must have kept over when he moved to your country for schooling. It was something to pass the time. Something to distract you. Something to make you stop worrying- stop thinking about it.
But you couldn’t stop thinking about it. No matter how many minutes had passed. You just couldn’t stop looking at it. Because it didn’t go away shortly. It was still there. It was still standing. And every single time you glanced at Yuuki’s face, you could tell just how hard he was focusing. But you could also tell that he had made no progress on your group project too. Barb Kelly
This time last year came the sudden, unexpected news of the death of Barbara F. Kelly's. Barb Kelly was one of my undergraduate lecturers, my principle PhD supervisor, and eventually a collaborator and friend. I have mentioned Barb in passing on the blog over the years, but now we've muddled through a year without her, I finally feel like I have some space to reflect on the fact she has been one of the most important influences the course of my life.
Barb was many things to many people. She managed to do this by being deeply curious about people, and had a devastatingly compelling ability to give you her full attention when you were talking with her. She was interesting because she was interested; her friendships, hobbies and tastes were eclectic and wide-ranging. There's a really beautiful obituary from our colleague Nick Evans that captures the story of Barb's life. This is my story of how Barb shaped me as a linguist, a researcher and a person.
I first encountered Barb when she was teaching in my final year of a Bachelor of Arts. The third year subject Language and Culture was a romp through kin terms, colour theory, names, primates, spatial systems, social intelligence, politeness, and so much more. Barb was an enthusiastic lecturer, with anecdotes, contextualisation and rich examples every week.
One week she introduced us to the topic of gesture. I was intrigued! How had I made it through a whole degree without encountering this work! (now that I write courses, I know how hard it is to find space in the curriculum for every topic worthy of attention, and gesture rarely features at all in undergraduate coursework). At the end of the lecture Barb said "this is one of my favourite topics. You're not allowed to do you're final assignment on this unless you see me first, because I don't want to read a bad assignment on this topic."
I still remember when I went to talk to her about it, and experienced the full intensity of the undivided attention of Barb Kelly for the first time. At some point, mildly bewildered by all this new reading, I wondered how we even knew that people paid attention to different types of gesture. "I always thought that would be a good topic for an honours thesis," Barb mentioned, before walking me back to something more manageable for a class paper.
[A brief time jump: The last time Barb and I caught up, it was getting to the end of the year and we were trying to avoid editing a paper. Somehow we got talking about the first time we met. Barb's main recollection was: "You were so weird." Barb thought it was very funny, but I also think that being interesting to Barb Kelly was a delightful compliment.]
A couple of weeks later, I went back and asked "could... I be the person who did that paper you mentioned?" At the very end of the final semester of my degree, I threw in my plans for a fourth year of Art History. I'm not usually one to change big plans so dramatically, but I decided that I wanted to do linguistics if I got to do the kind of linguistics Barb did. Of course, many years later when we were talking about it she laughed "I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't want you to do it!"
That's how we got working on a small honours project to see what kinds of gestures and other movement people report that they pay attention to. It was an in-the-spirit replication of an old task Adam Kendon set up in the 1970s with a projector and silent film, but we used a computer and software that let people mark what they thought a gesture was (this became, many years later, Gawne & Kelly 2014). Just as I was finishing up data collection Barb disappeared. She had colorectal cancer and (although I didn't know this at the time) the prognosis was terrible.
At the end of that year I felt quite lost. I had finished the project, but didn't really know what to do next. I managed to get an office job for a while; it was fun to have a steady income after years of student life, but I got bored pretty quickly. I had planned a long nonsense holiday in Europe to distract myself. Barb had returned to work and I emailed her about catching up for coffee. I even fact-checked this in my email archive, and apparently I asked to "pick [her] brain about post-grad courses". It's easy to forget, with the benefit of hindsight, just how little idea I had of what I could do, what I should do or how I should go about making any of it happen. The only people I knew who had PhDs were the ones who taught me. I do remember we talked about where there was good work being done, the difference between Australian/UK and North American PhD programs and what kind of topics I might do. Barb then mentioned that she had a project she was working on and they were looking for someone do contribute by doing a PhD on evidential systems of a Tibeto-Burman language from Nepal. How was I meant to come up with a better idea than that? She promised me that her oncologist gave her at least the four years I needed to finish a PhD, because I am excessively practical and Barb had a very good sense of humour. I mailed my application to do a PhD at The University of Melbourne from a post office in Malta while on my holiday. I only mention this because it sounds very nonsense and like something form the 1930s.
[A disclaimer here: I usually strongly discourage students from staying at their undergaduate institution for graduate study. But I also point out I'm a giant hypocrite and staying at UoM to work with Barb was a good decision for me. Please take into account the survivor bias. Barb believed in me and that was more useful than anything another institution could have provided]
The week before I started my PhD with Barb, we caught up off campus with Sara, another PhD student who was about to start working with Barb. Barb used it as an opportunity to explain to us that even though a PhD would be big and demanding and important, it was also important that we didn't let it stop us living the rest of our lives, "if you need to, take a break to tour with a band or have a kid, that's important too" I was worried she was maybe expecting I had time to start a band as well as do a PhD? but it also left a lasting impression on me. She was so good at talking through the linguistic content of what I was doing, but also socialising me into the expectations of academia, while being realistic about life also happening. With Rachel Nordlinger as co-supervisor and Jill Wigglesworth as chair, they were an amazing, sometimes slightly terrifying, dream team who took their roles as supervisors, teachers and mentors seriously.
After my PhD, Barb joined me in the work with Andrea Berez-Kroker on data management. We also tinkered away on other things; including getting my honours thesis published. She helped me plan job applications, and even loaned me her office when I had video interviews. When I left Melbourne for post-docs we'd meet in different corners of the world. She was supportive and practical during many of my less optimistic moments while I was precariously employed. I enjoyed that my postdoc work allowed me to return to gesture, and spend more time doing lingcomm stuff, while still continuing to do work on evidentials and language documentation. Having Barb as a role-model mean that I normalised having a range of interests as a strength. I still spend a lost of time at a desk, but it's as far away as possible from the monotonous office job I left to come back to do a PhD.
In late 2020 Barb had a cardiac arrest. When La Trobe offered me an ongoing job in that same week, I apologised to her for texting her while she was in ICU. Obviously this is important because I'm the protagonist of my own story, even though it's a story about Barb, but I also wanted to mention it because a recurring theme in conversations over the last year has been "but, even when she technically *died* she still came back", which hasn't really helped things sink in.
I am pretty much the age Barb was when we first met. And, a couple of years into a tenured teaching/research role, I'm in a similar place professionally. And that's very much thanks to Barb. Without Barb I would not have done honours in linguistics, and I would not have come back to do a PhD. I wouldn't have been ready to face the grueling academic job market, and I wouldn't have normalised the importance of having more in life to define you than your job.
I miss talking with Barb all the time. There have been moments in the last year when I've been introducing someone to the bouba/kiki test, writing about my favourite gesture papers or talking through a problem a grad student is having with their writing, and I get to continue Barb's passion and enthusiasm. I am so grateful for the influence she has had on me as a linguist, teacher, supervisor and human, and I'm grateful I get to pass that on.

Open Platform For Enterprise AI Avatar Chatbot Creation

How may an AI avatar chatbot be created using the Open Platform For Enterprise AI framework?
I. Flow Diagram
The graph displays the application’s overall flow. The Open Platform For Enterprise AI GenAIExamples repository’s “Avatar Chatbot” serves as the code sample. The “AvatarChatbot” megaservice, the application’s central component, is highlighted in the flowchart diagram. Four distinct microservices Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Large Language Model (LLM), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Animation are coordinated by the megaservice and linked into a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG).
Every microservice manages a specific avatar chatbot function. For instance:
Software for voice recognition that translates spoken words into text is called Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR).
By comprehending the user’s query, the Large Language Model (LLM) analyzes the transcribed text from ASR and produces the relevant text response.
The text response produced by the LLM is converted into audible speech by a text-to-speech (TTS) service.
The animation service makes sure that the lip movements of the avatar figure correspond with the synchronized speech by combining the audio response from TTS with the user-defined AI avatar picture or video. After then, a video of the avatar conversing with the user is produced.
An audio question and a visual input of an image or video are among the user inputs. A face-animated avatar video is the result. By hearing the audible response and observing the chatbot’s natural speech, users will be able to receive input from the avatar chatbot that is nearly real-time.
Create the “Animation” microservice in the GenAIComps repository
We would need to register a new microservice, such “Animation,” under comps/animation in order to add it:

It send an API request to the “wav2lip” FastAPI’s endpoint from “animation.py” and retrieve the response in JSON format.
Remember to import it in comps/init.py and add the “Base64ByteStrDoc” and “VideoPath” classes in comps/cores/proto/docarray.py!
This link contains the code for the “wav2lip” server API. Incoming audio Base64Str and user-specified avatar picture or video are processed by the post function of this FastAPI, which then outputs an animated video and returns its path.
The functional block for its microservice is created with the aid of the aforementioned procedures. It must create a Dockerfile for the “wav2lip” server API and another for “Animation” to enable the user to launch the “Animation” microservice and build the required dependencies. For instance, the Dockerfile.intel_hpu begins with the PyTorch* installer Docker image for Intel Gaudi and concludes with the execution of a bash script called “entrypoint.”
Create the “AvatarChatbot” Megaservice in GenAIExamples
The megaservice class AvatarChatbotService will be defined initially in the Python file “AvatarChatbot/docker/avatarchatbot.py.” Add “asr,” “llm,” “tts,” and “animation” microservices as nodes in a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) using the megaservice orchestrator’s “add” function in the “add_remote_service” function. Then, use the flow_to function to join the edges.
Specify megaservice’s gateway
An interface through which users can access the Megaservice is called a gateway. The Python file GenAIComps/comps/cores/mega/gateway.py contains the definition of the AvatarChatbotGateway class. The host, port, endpoint, input and output datatypes, and megaservice orchestrator are all contained in the AvatarChatbotGateway. Additionally, it provides a handle_request function that plans to send the first microservice the initial input together with parameters and gathers the response from the last microservice.
In order for users to quickly build the AvatarChatbot backend Docker image and launch the “AvatarChatbot” examples, we must lastly create a Dockerfile. Scripts to install required GenAI dependencies and components are included in the Dockerfile.
II. Face Animation Models and Lip Synchronization
GFPGAN + Wav2Lip
A state-of-the-art lip-synchronization method that uses deep learning to precisely match audio and video is Wav2Lip. Included in Wav2Lip are:
A skilled lip-sync discriminator that has been trained and can accurately identify sync in actual videos
A modified LipGAN model to produce a frame-by-frame talking face video
An expert lip-sync discriminator is trained using the LRS2 dataset as part of the pretraining phase. To determine the likelihood that the input video-audio pair is in sync, the lip-sync expert is pre-trained.
A LipGAN-like architecture is employed during Wav2Lip training. A face decoder, a visual encoder, and a speech encoder are all included in the generator. Convolutional layer stacks make up all three. Convolutional blocks also serve as the discriminator. The modified LipGAN is taught similarly to previous GANs: the discriminator is trained to discriminate between frames produced by the generator and the ground-truth frames, and the generator is trained to minimize the adversarial loss depending on the discriminator’s score. In total, a weighted sum of the following loss components is minimized in order to train the generator:
A loss of L1 reconstruction between the ground-truth and produced frames
A breach of synchronization between the lip-sync expert’s input audio and the output video frames
Depending on the discriminator score, an adversarial loss between the generated and ground-truth frames
After inference, it provide the audio speech from the previous TTS block and the video frames with the avatar figure to the Wav2Lip model. The avatar speaks the speech in a lip-synced video that is produced by the trained Wav2Lip model.
Lip synchronization is present in the Wav2Lip-generated movie, although the resolution around the mouth region is reduced. To enhance the face quality in the produced video frames, it might optionally add a GFPGAN model after Wav2Lip. The GFPGAN model uses face restoration to predict a high-quality image from an input facial image that has unknown deterioration. A pretrained face GAN (like Style-GAN2) is used as a prior in this U-Net degradation removal module. A more vibrant and lifelike avatar representation results from prettraining the GFPGAN model to recover high-quality facial information in its output frames.
SadTalker
It provides another cutting-edge model option for facial animation in addition to Wav2Lip. The 3D motion coefficients (head, stance, and expression) of a 3D Morphable Model (3DMM) are produced from audio by SadTalker, a stylized audio-driven talking-head video creation tool. The input image is then sent through a 3D-aware face renderer using these coefficients, which are mapped to 3D key points. A lifelike talking head video is the result.
Intel made it possible to use the Wav2Lip model on Intel Gaudi Al accelerators and the SadTalker and Wav2Lip models on Intel Xeon Scalable processors.

Don't know if you've touched on this topic before, but do you have any advice on dealing with discrimination within comp sci (specifically sexism)? I have bad anxiety and have constant thoughts telling me how I'll never be good enough or don't belong. My brother who is a senior dev has had a passion for computers since a small child while I just developed an interest within the past two years. My family takes his career seriously but then turn around and tell me how great of a secretary I'll be lol. Thanks for your time!

Just some background on me: I haven't had any sexist experiences in during my whole journey of learning software development during my apprenticeship and now working as a Junior Web Dev. I'm the only girl in the Dev team (6 of us in total), the only other woman is the Manager of the Dev team but she does databases + business oriented work so she doesn't code at all. I'm the youngest in the team also so they see me as "oh let's teach the kid of the group" kind of thing. So at work I don't feel any type of sexism, the lads are really open to teach me a lot stuff which I am thankful!
I don't know any other irl developers besides work so I'll move on to online. Online I know a lot more women developers; Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter (or X whatever it's called). Maybe it's because I've like cultured the content I see to them idk. I'm really glad to have that constantly on my timeline as it inspires me to push and do/become better because if those girlies can do it, so can I.
Though all the teachers/instructors I had were all men, they didn't make me feel small or not worthy to be in Computer Science, they were the opposite and pushed me to do it more. My Dad did Computer Science with CyberSecurity at university and he always pushed me to do computer science when I got older - not force but inspired me to do it (wanted to do medicine but too hard so switched to comp sci/programming)!
So, in my experience, I never had a really bad sexist interaction because I did computer science. People are shocked I am in programming in general but more like "Oooooh that's cool! Didn't know you did that!" kind of thing!
Now, this doesn't mean I haven't seen sexist remarks online, because I have but more through memes. I always ignore. Everyone, man or woman, should ignore such remarks/meme and move on. Don't let a bunch of people determine what you want and what's best for you! If you did, they would be controlling your life and not you yourself.
I don't know if that's easier said than done for you because I'm a hard person on people saying bad things to me. I just ignore you literally. I'm polite yes, but what you will say to me will go through one ear and out the other if it's really negative. Pretty much a "I don't care about your opinion, I will do me anyways" kind of person. E.g. if my brothers were to tell me "oh you a girl, don't do computer science" I won't listen to them at all.
And at the end of the day, what are they gonna do? Will your family members that are saying those stuff to you physically stop you from learning computer science? Especially since it's so accessible online so all you need a is a computer? All around the world, women are leaning computer science one way or another to change their lives and/or the lives around them.
They are making so much effort so for me to say "oh well.. you know some lads in my comp sci class say I can't do comp sci so I shouldn't" or "oh well I don't think learning programming is a woman's thing yknow because it's so dominated by men" - excuse my language here but that's flipping ridiculous!
This isn't some feminist or even anti-feminist thing here, it's a plain simple human thing: proving yourself and even the people around you wrong. Go into it and succeed. You're not too old or too young.
Why are their programs like SheCodes or BGIT (black girl in tech) that are making effort to help women push into tech? There's more women in tech now than there has been ever so if you're a woman and want to go into Tech but some lads are saying no? Do it anyways.
If a company has lads like that in them, that's the company's fault for hiring a sexist non-team player - says a lot about that company.
As humans we are never good enough so just get that out of your mind, less stress. Good enough for a job? all you got to do is keep going out it. Keep learning the theory, keep building the projects, keep redoing your resume and applying for jobs - keep going.
You quit, you let yourself down - especially when programming/ computer science is your calling!
