All this talk about shovel talks and nothing about Claudia Henderson. Like where’s her giving steddie shovel talks?
Claudia is eternally grateful to Eddie for saving her Dusty’s life, but she sees the pain her boys were both in after his sacrifice. She hears the screams at night from Dustin’s room. She watches as he either radios whoever was sitting with Eddie—usually Steve—or calls if the person doesn’t have a radio. Always asking for updates in the morning. Making sure the other boy is still there. Still alive.
Steve on the other hand is hiding his pain as he always does. She still sees Steve sitting vigil at the young man’s bed when she comes to bring real food and good coffee to Steve, Wanye and occasionally Dustin’s middle school science teacher Mr. Clarke. She sees the way Steve took extra care washing the other’s vest. All under a guise of being a good friend and not wanting Eddie to wake up alone.
When Eddie starts tagging along with Steve to their dinners occasionally she slowly watches as the two go from friends to pining to something else entirely. It’s when she’s certain that Eddie and Steve have become EddieandSteve that she starts doing it.
She would never give a shovel talk to Eddie. Steve’s a grown man, and can protect his own heart, but she’s already seen the pain Eddie had unwilling caused him. She’s seen the way Steve held the metalhead’s vest as it was his anchor to this world. She knew Eddie would never cause him pain like that again, but that doesn’t mean she can’t have a little fun scaring Eddie.
It starts innocently enough, she’s just sharing fun facts.
“Did you know,” she says to Eddie while Steve and Dustin are clearing the table, “that pigs can eat a human body. It can take some time, but sixteen pigs can do it in about eight minutes actually.”
She hides her smile as the younger squirms uncomfortably and replies “um, no I didn’t know that.”
She didn’t think anyone else but Eddie heard her, but she was wrong. Dustin says something about remembering going to Claudia’s cousin’s farm shortly after his dad left them, and thinking it had pigs. She had an even harder hiding her smile after Eddie went as white as a ghost with that information.
She continues to give Eddie little fun facts like that, and one time confirming that Eddie is in fact allergic to cinnamon, because she’d hate to forget that when baking him something.
She’d never ever be the cause of Dustin and Steve’s pain, or give her new found friends Wayne and Scott the panic she had in spring break not knowing where her Dusty was, but she does like seeing Eddie squirm on occasion.

The first time Steve and Dustin were alone together was the night they found Will. He had reassured Joyce that the kids would be fine, that he'd call their parents and, if needed, he would personally drive them home. Everyones parents were able to come to the hospital to pick them up.
Everyone expect Dustin.
So, Steve drove him home. He was giddy the whole ride, didn't bat an eye at Steve's presence the way the others had. He'd been more excited when Steve encouraged him to keep telling him about their side, about the little girl with superpowers and their little nerd game.
He'd invited Steve in for tea. Steve didn't have any left at home, had run out a couple days ago, so he agreed. He needed something warm after the day he'd had. He only hoped he wouldn't be intruding.
Claudia was horrified when she saw how bruised and bloodied he was. She had not only made him tea, but wrapped him up in a blanket and got her first aid kit. She was only really able to clean him up, most of the cuts beginning to heal just enough to be find on their own. Not that it made Claudia feel any better.
She'd only gotten more overbearing when Steve reluctantly admitted that his parents still weren't home yet. She insisted that he stay there so she can make sure he's still ok in the morning.
He has to argue with her when she tries to insist he sleep in her bed, while she stays on the sofa. Luckily, Dustin backs him up on that point. He points out that she'd make Steve feel guilty, which Steve quickly agrees with. Together, they convince her that Steve will be fine to stay on the sofa.
She made him breakfast in the morning. Homemade pancakes. She checks over his wounds again and, when she's finally satisfied that he doesn't have a concussion, she reluctantly let's him leave.
She calls him every other day, checking in on him. She stops commenting on his parents absence, just tutting. She only stops calling when, after two weeks, his parents do arrive home. They don't care about his bruises, simply remind him to keep his grades up, to not let the incident effect his basketball 'career'.
Steve finally took Claudia up on her offer to visit any time. She didn't care that he stayed the whole day, even offering to babysit Dustin when she wanted to go out for a little bit and was trying to find her usual babysitters number. He insists she doesn't pay him too, that she'd been letting him squat for long enough that he owes her anyway.
It becomes routine after that. Sometimes Claudia calls him to babysit, usually he's already there. Dustin complains a lot that he doesn't need a babysitter, but Steve can tell that he doesn't really mind. Dustin can rant about whatever he wants to Steve... mostly because Steve isn't really listening but that just means he can rant about the same thing as much as he wants.
The second time Steve turns up at Claudias house, bruised and bloodied, is far worse than the first.
She fusses a lot more, scolds Dustin for the plasters the kids had used to try and stop the bleeding. She had to reopen a lot of the cuts in order to clean them properly. She only needed to bandage one, holding the ice pack to his eye for him for some time.
"You can't keep getting hurt like this," she had tried to scold him. Her voice broke though, revealing the fear she tried to hide.
"He was protecting us," Dustin finally spoke up. He was unusually quiet, almost timid. "B... the guy was going to hurt Lucas. He said he was gonna kill him. Steve was protecting us."
After that, Claudia insisted that Steve join them for their Sunday roasts. At first as a thank you, for looking out for Dustin and the kids as much as he had. It soon becomes something... more.
It wasn't until Dustin dragged Steve home after Starcourt and the Russians, bruised and bloodied once again, that the subtext was no longer sub.
Claudia complained, loud and upset, that someone must have cursed the town, must have cursed her.
"If it wasn't for you having all your friends here, Dusty, I'd move us away. I'd pack all of our important stuff and we'd go, right now. Far, far away where nothing can hurt my boys ever again."
She'd been looking at Steve. She'd been making sure the medics had properly taken care of his wounds. She'd looked at him, pointedly.
"Where you two go?" Steve asked, trying to ignore the look.
Claudia had tutted, narrowed her eyes at him. "Us three. Our little family is already too small. Nothing could make me leave you behind, Stevie. Nothing."
"Oh."
She had smiled, fixing his hair.
Dustin snorted when he looked over. "You're catching flies, Stevie!"
"Shut up!" Steve threw a pillow at him. "You're such a brat!"
Dustin grabbed the thrown pillow, throwing it back at his chest. "You're one to talk!"
"Be careful," Claudia warned.
She sat back with a smile, keeping a close eye on them and making sure that they're play-fighting didn't get too out of hand.
She can remember when she first had Dustin, how much she'd wanted another son to keep him company, a brother who would love him. She can remember how distressed she was when she realized that she never would.
Funny how things turn out, she thinks; funny that she did get her dream in the end. Even if it does come with a lot of stress.
"Dusty, careful! You need to be careful, watch out for his face, ok?" She raises her voice a little. She bites back a smile at the sheepish looks they both send her.

i dont got the ‘rewrite the entire half of s1 that made me personally uncomfortable from lestat’s pov’ urge that some fans have (i think w/e revisits of those aspects we do get would actually make lestat look worse, not clear his name) but we do need some s1 omakes from les pov. namely him being pissed the fuck off that claudia refuses to call him father/daddy and calls him ‘uncle’, bonus w/ him going ‘i made you, not louis’, & claudia (thinking of delainey’s claudia) going ‘yo white ass couldnt be my daddy no way no how’ and lestat going ‘and pray tell who exactly is louis even seeking out, much less coming inside of to make-‘ with louis at that moment reaching out to silence lestat. louis tries to give claudia the birds & bees talk but claudia is like like daddy lou. ily. but i know what a dick do. and louis is blaming lestat for dirtying her mind& lestat is like i cant even see her mind the way you two talk in it without me knowing and uh oh they fussing in french again.

ok ok ok hear me out: princess diaries steddie au, specifically PD2; Eddie is Mia and Steve is Lord Nicholas.
like, this is only half-baked but Eddie’s mom is Helen and his dad is dead, but his sister (and him) are royals. he had abdicated his throne and his sister (in my head is Claudia Henderson) can’t have kids and seeks out Eddie to take over the throne. he is iffy about it but ends up being a people’s prince and (just pretend with me) he still needs to get married and enter lord Stephen Harrington (“Steve, just Steve.” he tells Eddie when they dance at Eddie’s bday party) whose family (Steve’s dad) is trying to take the throne from the beloved queen.
Chrissy’d be the one Eddie is originally engaged to, but end up being the best of friends like Mia and Lilly, and Robin is Eddie’s Charlotte and is super protective of him but actually ends up being number 1 on the “Steve is actually a good guy” train while Eddie wants nothing to do with him (also she is down bad for Chrissy).
but Eddie and Steve slowly and surely fall head over heels for each other. Wayne is Joe and falls for Queen Claudia, they end up adopting Dustin who aged out of the orphanage and was interning in security; in the end, Eddie still becomes king w/o marrying and idk i love this movie and just picturing Lord Nicholas!Steve kneeling in front of Eddie in the throne room and confessing his love had me thinking THOUGHTS❤️🥰
edit in case anyone finds this: i wrote this! it is steve as mia and eddie as nicholas though, you can find part one here and on AO3 here (A Recipe for Disaster)

Actually I want to write a fic where Claudia Henderson 100% killed her abusive husband, possibly with a friend. It was the seventies! She would have gotten away with it! Let her live the plot of Goodbye Earl!!

“Ci sono posti magici e la magia non si descrive, non si tocca, la si respira a pieni polmoni con ogni vento possibile, non importa se a favore o contro perché comunque ti darà la sensazione di libertà, una delle mie preferite. La verità è che per certi posti dovrebbe esistere il teletrasporto. Tipo che chiudi gli occhi e ci torni quando vuoi, anche se in realtà non te ne andresti mai via”.

I know Kirsten Dunst plays Claudia in the film adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, and she did a wonderful job; but, considering Claudia is five years old in the book, I can't help hearing little Margaret O'Brien's voice instead; and I genuinely wish there was a reality where we could have seen O'Brien play her; and, my God, it truly does make her infinitely more unsettling.
