Midnight Pals: The Hell Candidate
Graham Masterton: submitted for the approval of the midnight society, i call this the tale of what if satan ran for president Masterton: think about it! if satan was president, he could do anything Barker: i mean, he already can do anything can't he? Barker: he's satan Masterton:
Masterton: if satan was president of the US, he could do all sorts of evil things! Masterton: could you imagine? the very engine of government, turned toward evil! Masterton: why, it might commit genocide or institute slavery! King: wow, scary stuff! King: glad this is only a story
Masterton: imagine a world where the prince of darkness himself runs to be president of the united states King: i don't have to imagine it! King: I lived under DONALD DRUMPF!
King: eh? eh? King: see, the joke is that drumpf sounds like- Dan Simmons: JEEZ steve why'd you have to go and make it POLITICAL
Masterton: so the devil himself runs for president Masterton: and you what would happen if satan became president? Masterton: why, he'd probably pass all sorts of crazy laws!
Masterton: like he could make it illegal to pet dogs! Dean Koontz: no no no! stop it! Koontz: steve make it stop! King: it's ok dean don't worry King: satan couldn't really be president King: he'd never be able to build a working coalition
King: satan could never get the votes to become president Koontz: b-but what if he did??? King: well don't worry about that dean King: even if satan did somehow manage to become president King: he'd still be constrained by checks and balances
Koontz: steve, i can't sleep Koontz: i just keep thinking what if graham's story was real?? Koontz: what if satan could become president? King: well, steve, let me tell you something i told my boy joe when he had that same fear…
King: if that happened we'd just stage an assassination attempt and when the media saw the candidate using a child as a human shield, his whole campaign would collapse Koontz: oh phew! Koontz: thanks steve that makes me feel a lot better :)

top 5 horror book recommendations? it's spooky season and i need to get my read on...
Hell yeah! Gonna break this down a little. First an obligatory rehash of books I always recommend for this, these are like all-time faves for me
Wounds/North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud - can't choose between these two, so they're tied for my favorite single author short story collection. Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite writers of all time
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - a very very close second for my favorite single-author short story collection. Machado is a beautiful writer and finding an author writing such powerful horror from a queer woman's perspective was world changing for me.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - COME ON!!!! You might have already read this but consider reading it again! Absolute classic.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja - dark, fucked up meditation on art and addiction and toxic relationships. I think about this book all the time. A guy finds a weird hole in his apartment basement and then everything goes wrong (first slowly and then very very quickly)
Red X by David Demchuk - talked about this a lot before too but I really do love it. Fictional story inspired by real life serial killings that took place in Toronto's gay village over decades. The author inserts essays throughout the book that makes it part memoir as well. A supernatural story about real queer trauma.
--
Okay with that out of the way, here's some recommendations for stuff I think would be fun for Halloween specifically
Echoes edited by Ellen Datlow - OKAY CHEATING I ALSO RECOMMEND THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT'S A PERFECT OCTOBER BOOK!!! Fuck-off huge ghost story anthology. Huge range of tones, pretty diverse group of contributing authors, it's my all-time favorite anthology.
Slewfoot by BROM - this one's got major autumn vibes. It's a story of a woman in Puritan New England who's accused of witchcraft. It's also a story about the devil. Kind of. The print version has really amazing paintings by the author, but I've heard this is also good in audio.
Come Closer by Sara Gran - this is a great little novella. Possession story that really packs a punch. I can't really say much more than that, but it's not a huge time investment and I think it's really worthwhile.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu - if you can, get the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado (she adds in some great footnotes and it has some neat art too). This is a classic and also quite a brisk read. The original lesbian vampire story.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - here's a new release for you! I always watch a ton of horror movies in October, and if you're anything like me maybe you'll want to read a horror novel about horror movies. This story follows a female film editor in 90s Mexico and her washed up actor friend as they help a retired filmmaker complete his famously unfinished last film, which he had been making with a former Nazi occultist before strange misfortunes and the occultist's mysterious disappearance forced production to shut down.
Okay that was double the amount of recommendations requested so I'm stopping here. Haha don't look in the tags don't worry about it there's nothing there you're crazy

Summerween Day 3: Screams Under 200 pages
This is part of the recommendations for Summerween 2024. See the masterpost here.
A good scare can be very long, or can be quite short. Here are some recommendations of quick and scary reads under 200 pages (or slightly over).
Tumblr media
Ring Shout | P. Djèlí Clark (185 pages): Racism is a disease that transforms Klan members into monsters.
Tender is the Flesh | Agustina Bazterrica: (208 pages): Disgusting! Humans can't eat animal products anymore for reasons, so we now cultivate humans for consumption.
The Hellbound Heart | Clive Barker: (164 pages) The story that inspired Hellraiser. Barker's writing is crisp and easy to read quickly, but boy is THH a blast.
Audition | Ryu Murakami (208 pages): There's a movie version of this and I have such a hard time watching it. But, a guy auditions women to be his girlfriend, and unfortunately, the woman he's interested in may have some violent tendencies.
Night of the Mannequins | Stephen Graham Jones (144 pages): If you love SGJ's work, I highly recommend you go in as blind as possible on this one.
Ring | Kōji Suzuki (288 pages): What if you watched a video tape and died a week later?
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream | Harlan Ellison (134 pages): I first interacted with this story as a point and click adventure horror game. Recommend both the story and the game.

Someday I will write a Hellraiser/Hannibal au fic, it’s been rattling around in my brain. You can’t convince me Will and Kirsty wouldn’t be absolute bffs. And Julia and Hannibal would have a courteous relationship until Hannibal tries to eat Frank and Julia tries to kill Hannibal or something hilarious like that. Obviously I’d include the plot of Hellbound because there’s so much potential with the asylum and all.

The Breakthrough — A Story by Daphne du Maurier — A Teleplay by Graham Evans and Clive Exton
Dispatch the maimed, the old, the weak, destroy the very world itself, for what is the point of life if the promise of fulfilment lies elsewhere?
On the windswept coast of rural Suffolk, a deranged scientist attempts to extract the essence of life itself.
There are very audible echoes of Peter Newbrook’s The Asphyx and even Peter Sasdy’s The Stone Tape, scripted by Nigel Kneale in The Breakthrough, though it’s actually based on a Daphne Du Maurier short story that predates both of them. Written in 1964 as a favour to Kingsley Amis who was looking to put together an anthology of science fiction stories that was never published, the short story turned up in Du Maurier’s 1971 collection Not After Midnight, and Other Stories. Graham Evans’ television play, adapted by Clive Exton, is faithful to the story but possibly as a consequence it’s far too leisurely for its own good.
Computer specialist Stephen Saunders (Simon Ward) is sent by a government minister, Sir John Fowler (Anthony Nicholls), to a laboratory, Saxmere, situated on the salt marshes of the East Suffolk Coast, ostensibly to help maintain it’s fantastically clunky and oh-so-70s computer – all oscilloscopes, huge reels of tape and inexplicable banks of flashing lights. It turns out that the Saxmere team, made up of “Mac” Maclean (Brewster Mason), Robbie (Clive Swift), Janus (Roy Boyd), Ken (Thomas Ellice, here credited as Martin C. Thurley) and Cerberus the dog are trying to use the computer to help them capture human psychic energy (or “Force 6” as Mac dubs it) at the very moment of death. The terminally ill Ken is chosen as the test subject and a developmentally challenged young local girl, Niki (Rosalind McCabe), who shows some talent as a medium and seems to have caused poltergeist activity in the past, is drafted in to act as a conduit to him after he dies. The experiment seems to be a success but Niki reports back that Ken wants his life force released and the researchers realise with horror that their process captures more than just psychic energy.

The Wicker Tree (2011)
In today's review, I find that this May Day may lead to a religious experience. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2011 folk-horror sequel, The Wicker Tree #GrahamMcTavish #JacquelineLeonard #BrittaniaNicol #HenryGarrett #HoneysuckleWeeks
While it can be somewhat difficult for old-fashioned divinity to prosper in an era of secular ideals and alternative beliefs, that doesn’t stop the devoted from trying to instil their beliefs in the very four corners of the earth. Whether to appease the almighty for their past transgressions or to help purify the masses, the zeal is equally matched by the hardship of the journey. In 2011, with a…

The Saint: A Double in Diamonds (5.24, ITC, 1967)
"Were there... difficulties?"
"Does it matter?"
"Not to me. I was merely being polite, an art you should strive to master."
#the saint#a double in diamonds#leslie charteris#donald ford#harry w. junkin#john gilling#roger moore#cecil parker#anton rodgers#yolande turner#ivor dean#ilona rodgers#ferdy mayne#jack woolgar#howard goorney#john clive#alan haywood#dora graham#doris graham#yvette herries#tim barrett#dearly wish that a Pixley bible existed for this series if only to back up the theories i sometimes get about bts issues; a case in point#here‚ when Simon escapes a car he's being kidnapped in‚ causing it to crash (some awkward insertion of black and white stock footage with#a sort of night time filter over it) ending in what is undeniably a fiery explosion; this took me by surprise as it's a been a while since#Simon got the bad guys semi deliberately killed (more common in series 1). but then at the end there's a clearly dubbed line as Moore has#his back to the camera‚ with Simon assuring his friend that the bad guys have been arrested (despite exploding 5 minutes earlier). so did#someone in production get cold feet? surely it must be a last minute insertion to belay any concerns for Simon's heroic image (there was a#woman in the car to be clear). the line is a very obvious insert. but then why use the explosive stock footage? why even show the car crash#lord knows the show wasn't above cutting away and implying. speaking of which Simon makes a highly vulgar implication to the two twins#that feature in this episode‚ which was most unbecoming of a Saint! i ran out of tags. average ep meh‚ Ferdy fun villain

♫ All Out Of Love ♫ (Redux)
I last played this in January 2020, and I have no idea why I’m playing it again tonight, but for some reason I had it on my list, so … either somebody requested it, or it got stuck in my head one day and I jotted it down but failed to jot down the reason! Released in February 1980, this is a song by the Australian soft rock group Air Supply.  The song was written by Graham Russell & Clive Davis.…
