I don’t think tryptophan is associated with corned beef but we’ve all eaten so much we’re dropping like flies.

As it's Imbolc today, I made a bit of a feast. The foods associated with Imbolc include milk, cream and butter, lamb, and vegetables and orchard fruits that have been stored through the winter and are still providing sustenance at the start of February. Also, because of the association between Imbolc and St Brigid's Day, Irish dishes such as colcannon are often eaten at Imbolc.
So, this morning I baked an enormous cake! It's a victoria sponge filled with buttercream icing, and instead of jam I've put stewed apple made from the apples I picked from our tree last autumn. My plan is to freeze most of it in portions, but I will have a slice this evening before I do that!

For dinner I did roast root vegetables with sage, lamb chops, and colcannon made with kale, cream and butter. I have to say, it was all delicious!

Is Colcannon actually good? Because my only experience with it is this truly heinous song I was forced to sing about it in choir in the 10th grade. And our director, who later had a nervous breakdown and left the school though the administration refused to tell us that leading some people to assume she died, cheerfully suggested someone make it and bring it in for the class and the entire vibe of the entire choir was like "look lady I'm taking honors algebra 2 this year and my parents are getting a divorce, I do NOT have time for this shit ok?"
Anyway fuck that song but maybe the dish is alright?

Colcannon and Fever: A Dark, Magical Dive into the Irish Spirit
Ireland is a land of shadows and stories, where the line between myth and reality has always been blurred. Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series captures this essence masterfully, weaving together Celtic mythology, fae folklore, and a heroine’s relentless transformation. If you haven’t yet ventured into the dark, supernatural Dublin of MacKayla Lane, consider this your invitation—best enjoyed with a hearty helping of Colcannon, a dish as comforting as it is steeped in Irish tradition.
The Irish Spirit in the Fever Series
At its core, Fever embodies the dual nature of the Irish spirit: beauty and danger, light and shadow, magic and mortality. The story follows MacKayla Lane, a seemingly ordinary Southern girl who travels to Dublin in search of answers about her sister’s murder—only to find herself plunged into a world of deadly fae, mysterious allies, and a battle for survival.
Moning’s Dublin is more than a setting; it’s a living, breathing force, rich with history and myth. The Irish are known for their storytelling, their ability to spin tales of magic and mischief, and Fever fits right into this tradition. The Seelie and Unseelie fae, with their seductive beauty and terrifying power, are echoes of Ireland’s ancient legends, where creatures like the Tuatha Dé Danann and the banshee exist just beyond the veil.
But beyond the fantasy, Fever also taps into something deeply human—and deeply Irish: resilience. Ireland’s history is one of survival, of adapting to hardship and coming out stronger. Mac’s journey mirrors this; she starts as a soft, carefree girl but is forged into something fierce, something unbreakable. Her transformation is at the heart of what makes Fever so compelling—much like Ireland itself, she refuses to be conquered.
Irish Dish Pairing: Colcannon
To fully embrace the Fever experience, pair your reading with Colcannon, a traditional Irish dish of mashed potatoes mixed with cabbage (or kale), butter, and scallions. Simple yet deeply satisfying, Colcannon is a dish with layers—just like Moning’s world. At first glance, it seems comforting and familiar, but dig a little deeper, and you’ll find something hearty, rich, and filled with unexpected depth.
Much like MacKayla’s journey, Colcannon is about transformation—taking humble ingredients and turning them into something nourishing and powerful. It’s a dish that speaks to endurance, to making the best of what you have, which is exactly what Mac must do when she finds herself fighting for her life in a world she never expected.
Bonus: Traditional Colcannon Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet), peeled and cubed
- 4 tbsp butter (plus extra for serving)
- ½ small head of cabbage, finely chopped (or 2 cups kale)
- 1 cup milk
- 4 scallions (green onions), finely sliced
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Boil the potatoes in a large pot of salted water until fork-tender (about 15-20 minutes). Drain and set aside.
2. Sauté the cabbage or kale in 2 tbsp of butter over medium heat until soft (about 5 minutes).
3. Warm the milk in a small saucepan and add the sliced scallions, letting them infuse for a few minutes.
4. Mash the potatoes with the remaining butter, then gradually mix in the warm milk mixture and sautéed cabbage/kale.
5. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
6. Serve hot, with an extra pat of butter melting on top.
For an extra Irish touch, serve Colcannon alongside a crisp pint of Guinness or a cup of strong Irish tea—perfect for keeping you grounded while the Fever series pulls you into its whirlwind of dark magic and suspense.
Final Verdict
If you love books that blend dark fantasy with mystery, mythology with romance, and danger with desire, Fever is a must-read. It’s Ireland in book form—wild, magical, and utterly unforgettable. So, grab a copy, a bowl of Colcannon, and prepare to lose yourself in a story that will consume you, heart and soul.
Sláinte!
