You know, The Doctor's ego is such a fascinating part of their character. Because they act like it's massive, and to a certain extent it is. But they also have such low self-esteem under it all. Like they have a genuine fundamental belief that their life doesn't matter beyond the usefulness they find for themselves in helping others. They are always willing to lay down their life for pretty much any cause, and they have a fundamental belief that nobody will care.
For example, take The Wedding of River Song, River nearly destroyed the universe to tell the Doctor that the universe cared about him, and he still didn't believe it. Instead the lesson he took from that was that he had too much of an impact and needed to be forgotten. He literally began to delete himself and let the universe believe he had died, because he thought it was a bad thing that he was valued (yes, there were negative consequences to it, namely the Silence, but they still ended up happening and there was a massive negative consequence to the Daleks forgetting him, if you listen to the Eleventh Doctor Chronicles audios)
Another example is the audio Find and Replace, where the 3rd Doctor tried to replace himself in Jo's memory with Iris Wildthyme, because he thought she wouldn't mind, and it would be safer for her. And he didn't believe she would have any objections to that because he didn't believe that he had actually mattered to her.
There's also the stuff with the Time War, and the Doctor's belief that they aren't actually the Doctor, that it is an ideal they strive for but will never reach because they consider themselves to be a bad person, and that the War Doctor was their true self, a terrible monster, rather than what he actually was, a good man forced to do terrible things by inescapable circumstances.

As war threatens to engulf the land, lifelong friends reunite for an adventure that will change their lives and shape their world forever . . .When Tanis, Sturm, Caramon, Raistlin, Flint, and Tasslehoff see a woman use a blue crystal staff to heal a villager, they wonder if it's a sign the gods have not abandoned them after all. Fueled by this glimmer of hope, the Companions band together to uncover the truth behind the gods' absence--though they aren't the only ones with an interest in the staff. The Seekers, a new religious order, wants the artifact for their own ends, believing it will help them replace the gods and overtake the continent of Ansalon. Now, the Companions must assume the unlikely roles of heroes if they hope to prevent the staff from falling into the hands of darkness.

Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire (2016-present)
Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children  No Solicitations  No Visitors  No Quests
Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere... else.
But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.
Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced... they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.
But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.
No matter the cost.
Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (2004-2009)
For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies--elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy--the Marat horde--return to the Valley, Tavi's courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war...
The Belgariad by David Eddings (1982-1984)
Long ago, so the Storyteller claimed, the evil God Torak sought dominion and drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But that was only a story, and Garion did not believe in magic dooms, even though the dark man without a shadow had haunted him for years. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved - but did not know? For a while his dreams of innocence were safe, untroubled by knowledge of his strange heritage. For a little while...
Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers (2021-2022)
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered.
But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.
They're going to need to ask it a lot.
The Once and Future King by T. H. White (1958)
Once upon a time, a young boy called "Wart" was tutored by a magician named Merlyn in preparation for a future he couldn't possibly imagine. A future in which he would ally himself with the greatest knights, love a legendary queen and unite a country dedicated to chivalrous values. A future that would see him crowned and known for all time as Arthur, King of the Britons.During Arthur's reign, the kingdom of Camelot was founded to cast enlightenment on the Dark Ages, while the knights of the Round Table embarked on many a noble quest. But Merlyn foresaw the treachery that awaited his liege: the forbidden love between Queen Guenever and Lancelot, the wicked plots of Arthur's half-sister Morgause and the hatred she fostered in Mordred that would bring an end to the king's dreams for Britain--and to the king himself.
Otherworld by Kelley Armstrong (2001-2012)
Elena Michaels is the world’s only female werewolf. And she’s tired of it. Tired of a life spent hiding and protecting, a life where her most important job is hunting down rogue werewolves. Tired of a world that not only accepts the worst in her–her temper, her violence–but requires it. Worst of all, she realizes she’s growing content with that life, with being that person.
So she left the Pack and returned to Toronto where she’s trying to live as a human. When the Pack leader calls asking for her help fighting a sudden uprising, she only agrees because she owes him. Once this is over, she’ll be squared with the Pack and free to live life as a human. Which is what she wants. Really.

New Beginnings
Tumblr media
Fandom: IWTV (amc), IWTV, The Vampire Chronicles
Words: 1,454 words
Characters: Antoine, Lestat de Lioncourt, and brief mentions of Nicholas de Lenfent and Louis du Point du Lac
Summary: Antoine begins his new life as Lestat's Companion. Though, it doesn't last long.
Notes: If this is hard to read on tumblr's format I highly suggest going to read it on my ao3 account under the same name.
Change, adaptation, to become what? His lover? His friend? His companion? No. Since the moment he felt the hunger, the pain that stained his gums as they ached to pierce somebodies skin, he became aware of the new dynamic between him and Lestat. To be reborn out of regret and grief, it slowly began to tarnish what'd they'd had. He began to realize it when Lestat had began to fully explain what Nicholas De Lenfant meant to him. What he was like, how he grew up, how they'd remained together through so much strife. He picked up on the similarities between him and Nicki, and it struck a cord within him. Antoine Marcel Durand remained as nothing but a subpar replacement for his sun's first love. A rebound, who Lestat had began to grow bored of, spending his nights out and about, tasting anything he might fancy.
At first, Lestat was enraptured by the young boy. Long wavy black hair that sat low, and was often pulled up in a ribbon, much like nicki's, though it didn't compare to the soft brown curls that lestat could coil around his fingers. Heavy but beautiful eyes that hadn't seemed to gain a wink of sleep in ages, a pale blue, like the hydrangeas he would pick for Nicki on there nights out in Paris. A skinny stiff frame, drowning in insecurity. And yet the confidence to know of his own beauty. The thing that really allured him, reminded him so much of his once beloved, was the boy's ability to play music like it resonated in his soul. Beautiful passionate melodies coerced Lestat's mind as he watched the boy, the crowd not half as enamored as him. He remembered the way Nicholas would string his violin, and compose the most harmoniest songs. He always admired talent, and Antoine seemed no different. Perhaps it was cruel, to think he wouldn't be as interested as he was if it wasn't for his department from his once childhood friend. But he couldn't think about it. He had to be selfish. No matter what it might cost.
But nicki seemed to always haunt him, and all those similarities became a curse, as every reminder of Nicholas drove Lestat mad. He'd felt so much regret about leaving him, even if he knew he no longer wanted him there. And so, he began to leave Antoine. Overwhelmed by all the places Antoine seemed to lack. Nicholas was driven, and despite his downer look on life, he was passionate. He was willing to challenge Lestat, willing to be honest. And Antoine would not. He knew it was because the boy feared abandonment, so he sucked up so hard to Lestat that he felt like he was the one getting bitten. Antoine was willing to make Lestat the sun to his moon. But, in truth, he was more like the earth. His world revolved around Lestat. And that began to tire him. The more he detached himself, the worst he'd come back to find Antoine. He never complained, always resumed his place of listening, loving, and trying to care for Lestat. But even then, Lestat could see the pain in his eyes. He wanted him to ask where he'd been, to beg for him to stay, to finally express how he felt. But he didn't. And his admiration for him crumbled. There was nothing left for him to come back to, not until he got word of Nicki's death. It had consumed him. And that one presence he denied so heavily before was not one he could abandon now. He wanted to be comforted, he wanted to be together again with Nicholas. So he went to the closest thing to it. It'd been months since his last visit. And he felt a sting in his heart at the sight of what seemed to be left of Antoine. He almost felt guilty, not knocking, not giving the poor boy some time to clean up. He was a mess, hair dry and ragged, his pale skin covered in sweat, his eyes sunken, face flushed, and all of his things scattered in the home Lestat had been willing to get for him. Still, he let his grief consume him, practically torturing the boy over a song, gripping his frail body in both hands as he sunk his teeth into his wet neck. Most would scream, or fight, or beg. But not Antoine. No, all Antoine could do was cry. It only fueled him more, as he continued to press so hard it was bruising the boys skin. He only stopped when he heard a crack and felt him go limp.
A vampire turned out of regret and grief will be haunted by those emotions until the day he becomes dust in the wind. And that's what Antoine was. He was a vampire contaminated by the worst side of Lestat, and he knew it would either make him stronger, or turn him brittle like his bones. Still, Antoine remained. But the emotions he had felt as a mortal had only grown ten times stronger. And he found himself hiding away from Lestat, so that he couldn't judge the way he'd cry.
Their relationship, to Antoine at least, seemed to die out when Lestat buried himself beneath the ground. Fifty years of slumber. Fifty years of waiting patiently, and attempting to hunt on his own. It was difficult for him, to have to kill people he'd seen in the same boat as him. "The Undesirables" as Lestat called them, most of them immigrants just the same as Antoine. A remorseful killer; One who always whispered, "Desole, mon ami." to those he took as victim to survive. A silly practice, perhaps, but it was the only thing keeping Antoine from throwing himself to the fire as Nicki had done. Though, being cooped away in that house, without sunlight, or music, or anything that brought him happiness for that matter, seemed to be driving him insane. He felt his frustration grow continously, ten years, then twenty, and eventually he couldn't take it anymore. Everything overwhelmed him, and the tight built corset that had sufficiently hid his chest for the past 20 years no longer sufficed.
One night, in the heed of a rainstorm, Antoine had failed to capture himself a meal. He'd been starving himself for weeks because people began to grow suspicous of the amount of deaths, and had begun to suspect those who were immigrants. The pain in his stomach at the feeling of emptyness consumed him, and before he knew it he was gripping at his chest, clawing at the tissue that had been antagonizing him so eagerly. If he didn't have any sanity left within him he might've even attempted to drink from the blood that dripped out the large gashes on his chest. Instead, he remained in that alleyway until sunrise. He gave in to the thought of death for a long while, tempted to just get up and walk into it, to experience the sun one last time. But then again, he knew he'd miss Lestat. So he instead covered himself as best he could, and attempted to walk home. He was unsuccessful, as the blood had stained his shirt, and his the 4 large gashes on each side still remained apparent. A women followed him home, begging for him to let her call for a doctor to come to his home. And eventually, he conceded. Unfortunately, it was the same doctor who had tended to his wounds two decades ago. The questions that all his neighbors asked themselves remained at the tip of his tongue. "Why do you still look 18? Why do you never leave during the daylight? What's happened to you?" It only drove the poor boy more mad, drinking the doctor so dry he looked like a rotting apple. He cried that night. Apologetic to the man who had been willing to care for him, to see to his health as Antoine had done for so many others. He buried him, carving a headstone into a slab of wood with his father's old rusted knife. He knew it was risky, but even then, the moral quelms he struggled with before still remained within him, and he wanted to honor him. In time, the gashes became scars, and Antoine continued in this city he hated; reading, composing, learning.
Fifty years was a long time to reflect, so when when the year turned 1910, and Lestat finally awoke. He found himself seeing him in entirely new perspective. No longer trapped within the Sun's light. Especially when he was tossed aside for a pretty little creole man that had caught his once lover's attention.

There’s Nothing Else (Interview with the Vampire TV)
-Snippet-
“Perhaps Louis would prefer a different companion.”
Daniel’s stare bore into my own, his voice in my head. Words he couldn’t speak aloud, or Lestat’s thin composure would crumble: You already tried that with Armand. Or was that a rebound played out for too long? His journalistic instinct superseded friendship and care out of his preference for sharp and ugly truth. This is Daniel–this is why I sought him out and perhaps why Lestat looked to him, too.
I clenched my jaw. You feel sorry for him on your own time, not mine.
Lestat’s hand cut through the tense air, wandering to my knee. “I understand if you do.”
I couldn’t speak or breathe, helpless to the love shattering in his eyes, reforming, and shattering again.
“Would you look for a different companion, Lestat?” Daniel asked.
“I might seek out warmth in others, but a companion?” Lestat shook his head, and sadness once again repossessed him. It was the fear ever-present in the thirty years we spent together: that he would have to find solace in meager replacements for a love I denied him. That was the seed I planted, its roots infesting his core, deriving nutrients from a heart eager to send adoration my way. “No. There’s no one else for me.”
You don’t want him to have anyone else, do you? Daniel spoke to me.
I don’t care what he does with his body.
Bullshit.
“That’s enough,” Lestat shouted, his voice hoarse. “I’ve grown bored of this one-sided sniping.” I expected the familiar quiver of anger on his lip, the trembling of curled fists at his sides. I looked for the restrained violence, his body teetering on destruction. I instead found two streams of red on pale, smooth cheeks. The tears dripped into his lap like the beginning of a rainstorm, fat, terrible drops that would not cease. He was uncommonly beautiful in his vulnerability, and the openness with which he showed his anguish had always swayed me perhaps because I could only rarely show the same to him. He cried for both of us, but in that moment, above all, he cried for me. I wished to pledge myself to him, to apologize to him, and to ask him to devote himself to me completely.
I could not.
I stood from the couch, my feet mechanically searching for the rock pool, but I wasn’t in Dubai. There was no rock pool for my mind to still. I couldn’t rest my thoughts. I stopped between Lestat and Daniel, looking to the ground. The room spun around me.
“Bullshit,” Daniel said aloud. “You’re fucking delusional, Louis. What do you want? Come on. Cut the crap and just say it.”
In my panicked haze, needing comfort, my focus settled on Lestat. Even then, as his lip wobbled and tears streamed down his primadonna cheekbones, the ghost of hope welled in his eyes. He looked at me, pleading for a confession. The book Daniel published confirmed what I would not–that offense alone spoke more to Lestat than my feelings, and still he thought I could be moved. At that moment, Daniel stood off the couch, one more lob to throw in hopes that I’d dissolve just as Lestat did. I had ample practice at withholding.
“I’m not interested in other companions,” I said.
It was Lestat’s turn to stand, but I bolted for the door before he could reach out to me; before he could ask me to elaborate; before I’d fall to my knees and give in to the endless tidal wave of Lestat’s love for me.
Then I was alone in the night, on streets I knew too well from my time here in the seventies. And though time had changed San Fransisco’s landscape, my desire for Lestat’s presence as I strolled down cracked sidewalks had not. We could not be in the same room without an implosion, and yet apart, I craved nothing more than his hand on my lower back.

Note
Love your answer about David, I also would not miss him if the show decides to omit his character
I've been thinking about who would replace him if Anne Rice had dropped him after he used up his relevance, aka if he had died at the end of TotBT like she originally planned
I do not see Armand writing his own story so he still needs an interviewer but Daniel is right there so that's not a problem and David is completely irrelevant after that so no need to replace him
But I also don't see Louis going his Merrick misadventure alone, he needs someone there for support and to prevent him from spiraling and Lestat can't be that support because of his own involvement and the same can be said about Armand so that leaves out the two people closest to Louis so who could come with him? And in absence of any logical choice I think we should go with the funniest choice, that's right let's give Antoine the spot!
It would make the book a little more interesting to explore their dynamic outside of Lestat and force them to confront the past (and the ghost) together and I can see him being curious about the ghost too and he and Louis are in an interesting kinda unresolved place at the end still (and I really think the only thing in the way of Lestat's dreams of everyone getting along and becoming a big happy vampire family is Lestat himself which is ironic)
Also the books should be half from Louis pov and half from Antoine pov just because 100% from Louis pov would be depressing but Louis needs to narrate at least part of this and also because I'm curious about what goes inside that air head Antoine has
What do you think?
Interesting :)
Antoine is an interesting character in the later books, though underdeveloped at the court, but his very presence there, and that Armand actually lets him in at all at Trinity Gate...
I would love to actually see Louis and Antoine interact. (One of the reasons I would find it interesting if Antoinette would actually survive.) Antoine would definitely be an interesting companion for Louis, especially in the adventure with Merrick.
I'm not sure if Merrick would have been able to manipulate Antoine as she did David though, spell or not.
I think for chronicling Marius is likely the best person tbh. He already wrote down his own experiences, and I do think sooner or later he would maybe do so with the current adventures as well.
But very interesting concept! It would definitely have changed a lot of things, and yes, his and Louis' POVs would have been very riveting!

There's actually two Big finish audios (from Companion chronicles) with alien species (from Verbatim Six :) ) called novelisors that do this. One story is with Turlough - Ringpullworld and the second one is with Jo Grant and Iris Wildthyme - Find and Replace. Both are really good if you'd ask me. :)

Introduction Female agency refers to women’s capacity to ultimately effect change that has a ripple effect across society. This involves altering society’s opinion of a lady and constructing an image that previously did not exist (Timko & Maria, 2020). The concept of female agency is exemplified in three novels: Wieland, Hope Leslie, and Clotel, in which a woman is given multi-dimensional roles and personalities, as demonstrated below. Charles Brown’s work The Wieland is centered on two key themes: gender and gothic. Female characters in the novel serve as role models and objects of desire due to their diligence and perseverance in completing their assigned tasks. The author’s goal is to alter people’s perceptions about women, which he does via a figure named Clara Wieland. Teresa and Judith are two further feminists featured in the narrative. Conflicts arise in Hope Leslie over the role of women in establishing the new republic and the interaction between indigenous people and early Americans. Hope Leslie’s narrative concludes with the Indian Magawisca being replaced by a champion with whom he interacted. Female agency is exemplified by women who are informed of contemporary affairs, self-sufficient, and religious. They are self-sufficient and do not require a man’s favor. Clotel was written in 1853 by William Wells Brown and chronicled the story of a slave named Currer, who gives birth to two daughters, Althea and Clotel, both of whom are extremely intelligent and perform as well as white Americans. They meet their end following their employer’s death when they are sold, but the feminist Clotel finds a way to escape and subsequently marry her new owner. Female Agency in Hope Leslie Sedgwick was born in 1789 into a pious household with a solid educational background. He held several state and federal posts as a senator and congressman and served as a speaker and judge. She was able to write extensively on the nation’s political, social, and economic challenges due to her position. Her feminist personality developed due to how her father fostered her and how steadfastly he acted as a representation of patriarchal pressures. Her father was a federalist who was dedicated to serving both his family and his nation. Sedgwick, as a heroine, abandoned his father’s crucial faith. Sedgwick composed Hope Leslie in favor of feminism, which begins a new chapter in a woman’s perspective story. Initially, machismo reigned supreme, barring females from demonstrating their capabilities. A female character is born into a heroic tale and is unafraid of the consequences of her actions as a woman. To begin, Sedgwick reintroduces female bildungsroman into the nineteenth century, when women required political and social integration. She discusses feminism’s techniques and demonstrates how they are related to the modern nation in which women are welcomed for political, social, and economic involvement. Exclusion is a severe problem that robs afflicted individuals of their security, happiness, and rights. Magawisca, an Indian character, is imprisoned twice after being wrongly accused of committing major crimes. Hope Leslie contributes boldly to Magawisca’s release, so restoring her joy. As demonstrated by Hope Leslie, Sedgwick shows a multi-dimensional female character, indicating that women have been exposed to various positions. The latter is both disruptive and an excellent example of women in public settings. Madam Winthrop and Esther Downing are both admirable instances of excessively subservient ladies. Puritan women are obedient to their elders, and Madam Winthrop is an excellent example. She is the governor’s wife, who taught the maiden and matron the value of wifely respect and submission to her husband. Character differs according to the character she performs. Women have always been presented as strong and resourceful, and they display these characteristics without including their male companions in their daily activities. When Hope is in peril, she rescues herself and does not require assistance from a guy. When her secret with her sister backfires, she flees by boldly claiming to the boatman that she is a virgin and has never had an affair with any man. Captivity has been used to show women that they must take what is rightfully theirs from patriarchal males. After rescuing Magawisca from imprisonment, she rejects the traditional tale as the expected compensation. All of the story’s primary female characters are described as sympathetic. Esther’s kindness and charity are lauded in the novel’s final words. She views Hope’s public speech as an example for all women. Trope confinement has also been employed in relationships to increase support for women’s equality. Female characters in the narrative demonstrate empathy and will not stand by and watch others suffer. Female Agency in Wieland The work deals with a wide range of subjects, including gender and morality, among others. Brown’s work has led many to infer that he prefers to address abstract concerns rather than tackle queries regarding political or social matters, which is consistent with his personality. The female characters have been shown as victims of various events, despite Brown’s attempts to protect them by not presenting them as potential predators. By breaking the boundaries of stereotypes throughout the novel, the author depicted them as actual fighters in his eyes. He also attempted to avoid ladies who could not be trusted, who could not be relied on, and who were underdeveloped. Catherine, cowardly and weak, is protected by Clara during Carwin’s thwarted attack, demonstrating Clara’s robust and educated character traits well. Clara was also in charge of the household’s operations and comprehended events as well as men. Clara subsequently marries a guy who recognizes and respects her strong traits, and it is only a brilliant mind like Clara’s that is capable of doing all of this. Clara has a volatile temperament, as seen by her dispute with Pleyel, and she becomes too subjective when she allows her fury to take control. “There was nothing more obvious than the fact that I had taken my eternal leave of happiness,” Brown writes. Apart from the good that had been taken away from me, life was a pointless exercise” (53). This has provided feminists with a safe forum to voice their rage when they have been wronged without fear of repercussions. Despite her father’s wealth, Brown portrays Clara as a self-sufficient and prosperous lady who has accumulated her money via the toil of the slaves. On the contrary, women were not granted legal or formal freedom under the covertures legislation, which said that their rights were governed by their father’s will or any man with whom they shared home or resided in the community. They have the right to own property and are not required to allow anybody else to determine what they should do with what they possess. She lived only a few miles away from her brother, who paid her frequent visits. Likewise, she is over heels in love with Pleyel, and she has decided not to be the first person to confess her feelings for the guy she adores in public. That the writer never permitted the woman to be the one who was desperate enough to open out about love is shown by this. As a woman, she had all she needed and was under no obligation to marry to acquire property. Female Agency in Clotel   The first edition was published in the United States in 1853 by William Wells Brown. It is the first novel written by an African-American author to be published. The story focuses on the union of American citizens and African slaves in the nineteenth century. In this tale, women are shown as weak beings who have no right to do anything without the consent of their male elders’ consciences. Throughout a significant portion of the story, male chauvinism has predominated. Clotel Jefferson is the daughter of Currer and Thomas Jefferson, who were of mulatto and white heritage, respectively, and had a mulatto ancestor. She is sold as a slave to Horatio and ends up having a daughter as a result. Clotel intends to flee slavery, but he gets apprehended while attempting to flee to do so. Clotel decides to commit suicide rather than return to the nightmare. Those women, formerly considered slaves, were overworked and sexually mistreated because they could not assert their rights, which is clear from this. Women are treated with a great deal of exploitation and despair throughout the tale. When Clotel’s mother lost her job when Thomas went to Washington D.C., it was clear that the female slaves were being abused. It was her daughter who was sold away, and it was she who died of yellow fever after electing to travel to Natchez, a strong indicator that no treatment was provided to the vulnerable female slaves. Althea, even though she is a very young girl, is sold to Henry to become his property and his wife at an early age. Two daughters are born to her, and they both die of the same sickness that claimed their grandmother’s life years later. As a result, when Horatio marries another woman, Mary and her mother are sold into slavery. Mary is not unusual, and she suffers the same violence as the other women. As a result of her great suffering, Mary is a Greens servant who is saved by a Frenchman and accompanies him to Europe with him. Although they are exposed to strenuous labor, the women in the novel are utilized as sex objects. Immediately after giving birth, children or their mothers are sold, resulting in family separation, leading to Clotel’s death. Conclusion The three novels have exhausted the female agency topic by addressing the role of women and property ownership in current and ancient times and how the author portrays the women in the mentioned topic. In Wieland and Hope Leslie, male characters have been given rights to enjoy all the privileges that men have, unlike the woman in Clotel, where a woman is described as very weak and subjected to a lot of suffering, such as slavery. The role of women in the theme of religion is addressed by systematically analyzing the function of women in the religious setting. Leadership is discussed by explaining how females have participated in leadership in the three novels. Equality among the gender has not been left out since gender inequality is a central theme in all three novels. Females have been subjected to a lot of suffering by being considered inferior and without any right not even suitable to be treated when they fell sick. Finally, the role of women in education has been carefully discussed because women play a crucial role in education. My Experience with Green Tonic Supplements #lolz
Green tonic supplements have become a popular trend in the health and wellness world. Packed with the goodness of leafy greens and other supposedly beneficial ingredients, they promise a variety of perks, from boosted immunity to increased energy levels. Intrigued by these claims, I decided to embark on my own green tonic supplement journey. Here's a chronicle of my experiences with different brands and the effects I observed.
The Initial Foray: A Burst of Greens
My first foray into the world of green tonics was with a brand widely advertised online. This particular supplement came in a vibrant green powder form, easily mixed into water or smoothies. The initial taste was surprisingly pleasant – a grassy, chlorophyll-rich punch that wasn't entirely unpleasant. The first week was marked by a surge in energy. I felt more alert in the mornings and tackled my daily tasks with renewed vigor. However, this initial boost fizzled out by the second week. The taste, initially tolerable, began to feel monotonous, and incorporating it into my routine became a chore.
Digestive Discomfort: A Change of Course
Undeterred, I decided to try a different brand known for its focus on digestive health. This one boasted a blend of probiotics alongside the green superfood mix. The taste was slightly more palatable, with a hint of berry flavor. However, this is where I encountered a new hurdle – digestive discomfort. Bloating and gas became unwelcome companions, making me question the benefits of the supplement. After a week of battling these side effects, I decided to take a break from green tonics altogether.
Research and a Third Attempt: A More Measured Approach
Taking a step back, I delved deeper into researching green tonic supplements. I learned about the importance of checking the ingredients list for potential allergens or sensitivities. Additionally, I discovered the value of starting with a lower dosage and gradually increasing it to allow your body to adjust. With this newfound knowledge, I opted for a third green tonic supplement, this time from a local health store. This one focused on a smaller blend of organic greens and boasted independent lab testing for purity.
A Subtler Shift: Embracing Long-Term Effects
This third attempt proved to be a more balanced experience. The taste was earthy but manageable, and the dosage was lower, preventing any digestive upset. The effects were subtler this time around. There wasn't a dramatic energy surge, but I did notice a gradual improvement in my overall well-being. My gut health seemed to stabilize, and I felt a sense of increased vitality throughout the day.
Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
My green tonic supplement journey has been an educational one. It highlighted the importance of individual needs and the need for trial and error to find the right fit. Here are some key takeaways:
Not a Magic Bullet: Well Iwould Say Green tonics are supplements, not replacements for a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Research is Key: Understanding the ingredients and potential side effects is crucial.
Start Low, Go Slow: Begin with a low dosage and gradually increase it to allow your body to adjust.
Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to any negative reactions and adjust accordingly.
The Final Verdict
Green tonic supplements can be a valuable addition to a healthy routine, but they aren't a one-size-fits-all solution. Finding the right brand and dosage requires exploration and personalization. While my experience wasn't a dramatic transformation, it offered a subtle shift towards a more balanced and energized state. Ultimately, the decision to continue with green tonics depends on your individual goals and how your body reacts.

It's time... for me to start listening to Big Finish. So, of course, I have come to you. Suggestions for where to start? Sixth Doctor stuff preferred, of course? Do you have favorites? Do Tell!
:D !!! this is the best ask ever!
(I assume then that you have finished Trial of a Time Lord and that I can safely recommend audios that spoil it?)
I can't remember whether you said you have Spotify. If you do, Big Finish on Spotify is a good (and free!) place to start; the first 50 entries in the "Main Range" (Doctors 5-7, and 8 before he got his own range) and some extras are available. (Be careful you don't accidentally have it on shuffle, though--ask me how I know!) See this useful article by @circular-time for a guide to who's in what and what order they go in, e.g. if you want to follow a particular character or a particular arc: http://vhswhovian.com/2017/11/index-of-free-big-finish-on-spotify/ On the other hand, many Big Finish audios are more or less standalone, especially the ones that fill in gaps in TV continuity.
Recs below the cut!
Of the Sixth Doctor audios available for free on Spotify, these are some top picks:
The Marian Conspiracy. Introduces new companion Evelyn, a middle-aged history professor whom I love very dearly. She's a delight, the historical setting is used to good effect, and Six's dark side and kindness are both well handled.
All of Evelyn's audios are good, and you can definitely have a good time just following her story! Other standout Evelyn stories that are free: The Apocalypse Element is a big sci-fi blockbuster (well, in audio form), although I'm not sure how impactful it would be if you haven't watched Romana's TV stories as well--she's a major character in it.
Jubilee is possibly, still, Big Finish's masterpiece, the story that inspired the new series' Dalek. Dark but not despairing, it finds the Doctor and Evelyn in an alternate, dystopian 20th-century England created by a Dalek invasion. A failed Dalek invasion.
Doctor Who and the Pirates is a hilarious and heartbreaking, extremely meta story. It's about the power of art and storytelling to help us cope with guilt and grief. And pirates. It's also a Gilbert and Sullivan pastiche: Colin Baker sings I Am the Very Model of a Gallifreyan Buccaneer. And he can sing!
Those are my Six and Evelyn top picks, and the Evelyn stories are a great place to start with Big Finish. But if you've been watching the TV series, you're probably thinking that you miss Peri and/or want to know more about Mel. So here are some recommendations with the TV companions:
The One Doctor is pure comedy: in a distant future where everything is banal, Six and Mel meet a conman impersonating the Doctor and his beautiful assistant Sally-Anne, who assume they're running the same con--only for the bickering pairs to encounter a quite genuine alien menace who needs them to build IKEA furniture, win a trivia competition, and visit a very lonely Jelloid. Bonnie Langford has a knack for comedy that really shines here.
...Ish is a Six and Peri story, and it's the audio that got me into Big Finish and in fact into Six at all. @circular-time describes it as "a little esoteric" and she's not wrong; suffice it to say that the villain in this story attacks a conference of lexicographers through the medium of words, quite literally. Intrigued? Then you'll probably like it.
Some of the Lost Stories are interesting: audio versions of TV stories that never actually got made, including Six and Peri stories that were replaced by Trial. I remember enjoying Paradise 5 (infiltrating a space resort) and Point of Entry (Christopher Marlowe), but I don't remember all that much about them, unfortunately.
The Destiny of the Doctor boxset is a series of stories, one for each Doctor, that all connect up at the end. They're in what's called the "Companion Chronicle" format, which is to say that unlike most Big Finish audios, they're not full-cast but instead read like audiobooks by a single performer, in this case Nicola Bryant (Peri). She reads beautifully and the story stands well on its own.
Big Finish has also made a few, mainly short stories available for totally free on their Soundcloud. Of these, Urgent Calls is by far my favorite--a wonderful solo story for Six that uses the audio medium to great effect. I think The Ratings War, which is quite funny, is also there.
If you decide to spend money, the first 100 of the Main Range are very cheap downloads. Highlights include:
The rest of Evelyn's stories: Arrangements for War is deservedly beloved, The Nowhere Place is a particular favorite of mine, and 100, a collection of four short stories, is worth getting if only for the delightfully meta "The 100 Days of the Doctor."
The Wormery brings Six, struggling to find himself after his trial, together with Iris Wildthyme, a character who started as a parody of the Doctor and knows it perfectly well. Iris has her own audio series, but you don't need to know much about her to enjoy The Wormery. She drinks like a fish, her TARDIS is a red London bus (and it's smaller on the inside), and her fabulous sense of style runs to leopard print and big hats: everything else, she'll explain herself!
Her Final Flight is the first of several excellent outlets for your Six and Peri post-Trial feels. I won't spoil it, but it's very good.
The Juggernauts is a good one for Mel's character. Separated from the Doctor, she finds purpose helping with a space colony's research program--but it may not be quite what she thinks...
I personally like Year of the Pig, which features a talking pig, Turkish steam baths, the Doctor's tipsy quarrel with Marcel Proust, and the looming shadow of WWI, but... well, that was probably enough for you to tell whether you'll like it or not!
The Wishing Beast is another great Six and Mel story. It's actually a three-parter, The Wishing Beast, which comes with a connected one-parter, The Vanity Box; they're set in different times and places but are narratively connected!
Beyond the first 100 stories of the Main Range, prices go up, so I tend to just buy things that sound up my alley. I really enjoyed the Six and Charley audios (starting with The Condemned) but they won't make much sense unless you've also listened to the Eight and Charley audios (which you should, if you want to branch out from Six; the early ones are on Spotify, starting with Storm Warning).
Recorded Time and Other Stories is an excellent anthology of Six and Peri stories. My favorite is "A Most Excellent Match": Peri gets trapped inside a VR Jane Austen simulator game, and the Doctor has to rescue her within the terms of the literary genre!
The Wrong Doctors is Mel's introduction episode! Sort of. It gets complicated. Anyway, it contains a version or versions of how Six and Mel might have met, and it's a very good story.
The Widow's Assassin, similarly, contains a version of what might have happened to Peri after Trial. It will give you all the feelings the show left unspoken--but not everything is what it seems!
Trial of the Valeyard is particularly enjoyable if you liked the courtroom aspect of Trial: featuring returns of Michael Jayston (the Valeyard) and Lynda Bellingham (the Inquisitor), but now the Valeyard is the one being inquired into....
I haven't listened to The Last Adventure yet, but I'm told it's incredible. It's the full story of the Sixth Doctor's regeneration: it's not just falling over!
If you like River Song, I have to recommend The Diary of River Song series 2. (It's not necessary to have heard series 1.) She meets Six and Seven, and her audio with Six made me ship it. They're adorable.
The Behemoth features Six with recent audio companions Flip and Constance, but you don't need to know them to enjoy the story, which is a pure historical set in 18th century Bath. There's no alien menace here--instead, the villains are slave traders. The audio has some very memorably funny parts (comedy of manners, I would say), but treats its subject with deserved seriousness.
If you like Flip and Constance, The Middle is also really good--set in a sci-fi society that's segregated based on age. Which is really unfortunate, given that it's Constance's birthday.
I know this is a lot--I got a bit carried away! I love a lot of Sixth Doctor audios, some probably more than they deserve, and there are probably others that I haven't given their due here at all. But I hope this is a helpful starting point to get oriented to what types of audio stories are available, where you can get them, and which ones you might enjoy. Honestly, though, you can't go wrong!
Have a wonderful time--and, if you have the inclination to share some reviews or thoughts, I'd love to know what you think of them!

🧱 🐱 🌱 💛 for riya and maeve!
ok i’ve finally found the time to write! thank you for these!! 💜💜 // prompts i’d like to receive
[ 🧱 ] how would you describe your muses’ morality? what are their core values?
RIYA — the strongest feeling she has in this category is her distaste for rules and laws restricting somebody’s freedom, even if that comes from a selfish place of wanting to be free to leave the circle whenever she wants to do whatever’s on her mind,,,,she’ll still stick up for somebody if they’re being confined somewhere. outside of that she has some lofty ideals of heroism due to the many stories she’s heard from her brother of his career as a dragon hunter. has a generally standard sense of right and wrong, won’t hesitate to hop into battle if she thinks somebody’s in need of aid/defending, gigantic blindspot when it comes to the privilege of nobles/royalty and to an extent the mages of her city.
MAEVE — a paragon of Good. passionate and vocal in beliefs of helping those in need, leaving light and beauty behind wherever you go, ushering change into the world for the good of those who are oppressed and abused, encouraging the healing and growth of others, etc etc. has pretty strong feelings when it comes to good/evil and right/wrong and isn’t afraid to speak up about them. thinks that if you root out something evil that it is right to replace it with something good to encourage the spread of that new energy (ie: her buying and renovating cyprian wiley’s hideout into a sanctuary for the women and children of novigrad).
[ 🐱 ] does your muse have pets? did they have pets as a child? how do they feel about animals?
RIYA — i wouldn't be surprised if there were pets around the family estate while she was growing up, not for any particular in-universe reason but because i, tabby, can just see the vibe of the rich family that has multiple pets that the staff ends up spending more time with lmfao there are also likely some cats around the circle. riya is very much a surface-level lover of pets. she likes petting them and sneaking them treats, sometimes playing with them for a little bit, but there's simply no way she's going to be the one taking them on walks or giving them baths etc etc. honestly probably doesn’t think much about animals outside of that. likes the fluffy ones, would quickly walk away from the big ones.
MAEVE — didn't have a pet as a child, unless you count how she helped some others in the village care for their livestock from time to time. years and years and years later when she's living in toussaint i could see her having a few cats and dogs, probably rescues because yeah that checks out. thinks little critters are super cute, fairly afraid of animals on the larger side after her dreadful experience with a griffin.
[ 🌱 ] what themes are relevant to your muse?
RIYA — spoiled brat thrust into harsh reality, there’s no fighting destiny, growth through exposure and experience, embracing responsibility (maybe we’ll see). not much else outside of those atm, which were the initial concepts that became riya to begin with.
MAEVE — soulmates both fated and created, finding yourself after gaining the freedom to do so, writings as acts of love and altruism, healing, reincarnation, learning to take off the mask, embracing and exploring sensuality, found family, damsel in distress turned competent companion, tagalong chronicler, a million others as is natural in a traveling bard.
[ 💛 ] how empathetic is your muse? how compassionate are they? is this something people expect from them, or are people surprised when they find out how compassionate or empathetic they actually are?
RIYA — i think,,,she has the capacity to learn empathy as she grows, there's some compassion there already (if she's presented with something upsetting directly in front of her) but she has lived such a privileged life for so long that it's hard for her to understand other ways of life. she's been sheltered from the harsh realities of thedas outside of her own bubble in cumberland, she doesn't even know just how bad mages have it because her particular circle is so chill. she certainly doesn't know the struggles of people desperate for food and security, those have been provided since she was a baby. spend 5 minutes with riya and you’re not surprised by her lack of empathy.
MAEVE — overflowing with empathy and compassion that haunts her every day because she's Constantly thinking about how she can help others with the resources she has. that should never surprise anyone, stories of maeve's acts of charity and aid aren't as popular as her published works but they still get around. though it’s probably a little shocking to strangers when one of her first instincts to dangerous beings is to try connecting with them instead of booking it, but it’s earned her friends and saved lives before so she does her best to nurture that instinct instead of training it away as some would probably like her to.

Disney Reportedly Wants Harrison Ford For Indiana Jones Streaming Show
Thankfully, then, it seems that the fifth (Indiana Jones) outing may not be the last we see of the actor in the role, as insider Daniel Richtman claims that Disney wants Ford to appear in a series that’s being developed for their streaming service. Further details are unclear and the tipster doesn’t say if it’s an all-new show or a reboot of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, but as one of the Mouse House’s most valuable assets, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they wanted to continue mining the property once Indiana Jones 5 wraps up the big screen stories for good.
Thanks everyone! Hopefully in 2021 the pandemic will fade and the world will return to normalcy. Luckily the production of Indiana Jones V will start this spring, as well as other Harrison projects such the tv show The Staircase and the movie starring with Ed Elms. Fingers crossed for a year full of (good) news about Harrison. Have a happy and safe 2021.

Chapter One: A Second Chance to Live A Life Worth Living
Author: ambiguoslyambitious (me!)
Rating: Mature
Word Count: 2,402
Summary: Getting a job at Joja Corporation was supposed to be Bela Rivers' big break in the business world. Anyone who wanted to be successful in Stardew Valley dreamed at working in one of their corporate offices. However, life inside a cubicle is not what it's all cracked up to be, and the company that she is working for is harboring some deep secrets. A mysterious envelope gifted to Bela by her recently deceased grandfather might hold the key to a second chance to live a life worth living.
“M-Ms. Rivers? Hello?” a desperately cheery voice called out, a twinge of annoyance hiding just below the surface.
Bela pulled her eyes away from the harsh white light of the computer monitor in front of her to meet the even harsher glare of her supervisor, Mary Boerhen. Mary was a miserable woman cloaked in grey, both in personality and attire.
“Apologies, Ms. Boerhen,” Bela forced a smile to hide her hatred for pleasantries. “What can I do for you?”
Bela had just spent the past three hours aimlessly staring at her monitor, dreading spending yet another day updating spreadsheets. Every once in a while she glanced up at the menacing green light signaling that she was unfortunately still on the clock. The words, Join us. Thrive, seemed to be mocking her every day she was forced to sit in her corporate-issued personal hell. Bela had once held excitement for her job inputting data for Joja Corporation, the nation’s leading industry in just about everything. Everyone knew that if you wanted to make a solid living in Zuzu City, you just had to get a job with Joja.
However, that excitement soon faded once she had been squeezed into a tiny cubicle, condemned to spend her entire nine-to-five repeatedly going over numbers, day in and day out. She had thought that her recent degree in business administration, paired with her relation to the governor of Stardew Valley, would’ve given her the upper hand amongst her peers for a more “hands on” job opportunity within the company.
Unfortunately, she was still stuck crunching numbers like the rest of them, an insignificant cog in the corporate machine.
“Well, Ms. Rivers,” the woman sneered, “you could actually do the job you were hired to do.” Ms. Boerhen pursed her lips and turned away sharply, presumably to bark at anyone else who appeared to be slacking off.
Bela let out a small sigh, her fingers gravitating towards her desk drawer where a letter from her grandfather was resting. Once again, Bela felt her thoughts wander as she sadly remembered her last visit to him.
It had been ten years since Bela had last been to Pelican Town, a quaint little farming community located in the heart of Stardew Valley. As a child, Bela remembered spending each summer frolicking in the fields of Riverland Farm, a massive expanse of farmland spread out on a vast variety of small islands. However, her last visit wasn't so happy.
Bela remembered being thirteen years old watching from the train window, the city fading into the countryside. Harsh lights were replaced with the glow of fireflies and cement gave way to worn-down dirt paths. Her parents were tense the entire train ride, her father especially. She remembered the way his jaw was clenched and the tight grip he maintained with her mother's hand. Unbeknownst to Bela, this was going to be the last time that she was going to see her grandfather alive.
Walking into the farmhouse, Bela remembered how frail her grandfather looked in his cot. He lifted his head and offered her a weak smile.
"My dear, Bela," his voice was barely above a whisper. Bela desperately tried to prevent any tears from escaping, but seeing the ghost of a man she remembered as being vibrant broke her young heart. Before she could break down, her father's voice boomed angrily.
"Why didn't you say anything sooner?!" Her father's voice shook slightly, though Bela could not tell if it was from rage or sadness.
"What difference," the old man responded coolly, "would that have made?"
Bela's mother placed a hand on her father's shoulder, a desperate attempt to calm him down.
"I do not wish to argue, Jacob," Bela's grandfather said, meeting his son's furious gaze. "I know that I've made mistakes. I just wanted to tell you goodbye and give you the chance to say the same." Suddenly, he bent over in a violent fit of coughing, forcing Bela's father's gaze to cool into concern.
“...and for you, my special granddaughter, I want you to have this,” he managed to choke out, handing Bela an envelope enclosed by a vibrant purple seal, bearing the Rivers family crest, a pair of swans facing each other with the phrase, a flumine perduraverit, written between them.
Before she had a chance to open it, Bela’s grandfather blurted out, “No, no, don’t open it yet...Have patience, my dear.”
Her grandfather smiled weakly before continuing on, “Now, listen close...There will come a day where you feel crushed by the burden of modern life, and your bright spirit will fade before a growing emptiness. When that happens, my child, then you will be ready for this gift. Now, let grandpa rest...”
A few weeks went by before her grandfather finally passed. Bela's father quietly had him buried on the property without a funeral and refused to go back. Or at least, until now.
While Bela sat at her desk bored, her parents were currently boarding a train to Pelican Town in order to find the proper documents to sell Riverland Farms. They planned to use the money to fund their retirement and help Bela get her own apartment.
I wonder what’s in the letter that Grandpa left me, Bela mused, swirling a pencil between her fingers. She let out an exasperated sigh and decided that it was finally time to begin her work. Not even five minutes into crunching numbers the phone on her desk began to ring.
“Good afternoon from Joja Corporations, this is Bela. How can I be of assistance?” Bela answered perkily, rolling her eyes at the spiel she was taught to spit.
“Bela Rivers,” a serious voice responded, “you are wanted in Mr. Jameson’s office.”
Bela immediately straightened up in her seat and her heart rate quickened as she realized that she was being summoned to her superior’s office.
Damn it, she cursed to herself. Ms. Boerhen ratted me out to the big boss.
Bela took a quick breath before replying calmly, “Of course, I’ll be right there.”
She quickly placed the phone back on the receiver and stood up, mentally preparing herself for a scolding for her less than desirable performance. As she walked down the hallway to Mr. Jameson's office, she silently began to berate herself for wasting such a golden opportunity. Her heels clicked loudly like the hands of a clock, counting down the seconds until she was out of a job.
As she stood outside of Mr. Jameson’s door, Bela closed her eyes briefly and knocked raptly.
“Ms. Rivers, you may come in.”
Bela pushed the door gently, surprised to see the amount of people in the office. At the giant desk made entirely of glass, sat Mr. Jameson, a stocky man dressed in a sharp, yet dull grey suit that matched his seemingly lifeless expression. Next to him, sat a meek looking woman in a similarly bland pantsuit who avoided looking in Bela’s direction. Across from them sat two men wearing long black coats over simple business casual wear. When she entered the room, the older of the two gentlemen stood up, clutching a gold badge in his right hand.
“Hello Ms. Rivers, my name is Detective Hanlon,” the man then gestured to his more youthful companion, “and my partner Detective Gaumond.”
“Detectives?” Bela questioned, wondering why the hell the police were getting involved with her lack of productivity. You can’t be arrested for being lazy, right?
“Yes, unfortunately Ms. Rivers, there seems to have been an accident on the tracks near The Mountain.”
Bela’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t believe what the detective was saying. “W-what? What happened?”
The younger detective briefly made eye contact with Bela, a genuine sadness in his eyes before he ducked his head.
“I’m afraid that your parents, Mr. Jacob and Mrs. Kiera Rivers, were both killed in the rockslide on their way to Pelican Town.”
The young detective stood up and gave her a pitying look, “I’m deeply sorry for your loss, Ms. Rivers. This has been an unfortunate accident. These types of natural disasters are completely unpredictable.”
It was as if Bela had been sucker punched right in the chest. She stood there in complete disbelief until a faint whisper of a memory tickled the back of her mind.
“Wait,” Bela said coldly, moving her eyes over to the two behind the desk who refused to meet her gaze, “hasn’t Joja been mining in The Mountain?”
Mr. Jameson quickly looked over at the woman to his side, a bead of sweat trailing down his temple. The woman sheepishly looked up, desperately trying to avoid Bela’s cool glare.
“Yes, they have,” she admitted, glancing over at the two detectives, “However, it is too early to say whether Joja’s mining directly contributed to the rockslide, seeing as that is a natural disa-”
“Bullshit!” Bela interrupted, her voice steadily raising in anger. “You KNOW that you killed my parents!”
“Settle down, Bela,” Mr. Jameson snapped, “This was just an unfortunate accident. You can take the week off to settle your affairs.”
“Take a week off?” Bela’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Is that all my parents’ lives were worth? That’s all I get? Not even an apology?”
“Ms. Rivers,” the woman quipped, “Joja Corporation is not liable for natural disasters. And as a Joja employee, you should remember that your contract states that you are not allowed to speak negatively about the company in any way.”
“I-Is that a threat?” Bela retorted, in shock at the audacity of this woman. “Are you threatening to sue me for telling the truth? That YOU killed my parents?!”
She shook her head angrily, not able to process the barrage of emotions hitting through her at that moment.
“You know what?” Bela spat, “I quit.” Bela turned on her heel, storming back to her cubicle.
Once there, she began grabbing all her personal items and shoved them into a cardboard box. When she finally got to the desk drawer that held her grandfather’s letter, she hesitated for a second before tearing the envelope open. Inside were two pieces of paper, the top one decorated with her late grandfather’s handwriting, saying:
Dear Bela,
If you are reading this, you must be in dire need of a change.
The same thing happened to my grandfather, long ago. He had lost sight of what mattered most in life; real connections with other people and nature. So, he decided to drop everything and move to the place where he felt like he truly belonged.
I’ve enclosed the deed to that place, my pride and joy: Riverland Farm. It’s located on the southern coast of Stardew Valley, between Ridgeside Village and Pelican Town. It’s the perfect place to start your new life.
This was my most precious gift of all, and now it is yours. I know that you will honor the family name, my child.
Good luck.
Love, Grandpa
P.S. If Lewis is still alive, say hi to the old guy for me, will ya?
Bela’s eyes welled up with tears as she glanced at the second paper, the deed of Riverland Farm. She rushed to gather the rest of her belongings and walked out of the corporate office for the last time.
Before Bela knew it, she was gazing out the window of the bus she was on, heading to her new home. The trees blurred together in a sea of green as Bela allowed herself to get lost in her thoughts.
Maybe, Bela sighed, this fresh start is just what I need.
The bus slowed down to a stop at a small crossroads. Once Bela exited the bus, she was approached by a cheerful redhead.
“Hello! You must be Bela,” she smiled warmly. “I’m Robin, the local carpenter. I don't know if you remember me, since it's been a few years since you've last visited, but I'm Sebastian and Maru's mom.”
Bela smiled back hesitantly, before memories of an awkward, spiky-haired emo wannabe flittered into her head. “Hi, Robin, it’s nice to see you again, though I was expecting Mr. Meyer.”
“Oh, Mayor Lewis sent me here to fetch you and show you the way to your new home. He’s tidying things up for your arrival.” Robin turned, and began walking down the dirt path, gesturing for Bela to follow. “The farm’s right over here, if you’ll follow me.”
Bela listened intently as Robin began to relay different stories of some of her most difficult jobs. After a few moments they approached the dilapidated Riverland Farm. Bela was astounded at how unkempt the land was, littered with overgrown patches of grass and rotting crops.
“Yeah,” Robin shyly rubbed the back of head, “this farm has definitely seen better days. However, there is still good soil underneath.”
Suddenly, the farmhouse door opened, and a kind older man stepped out with a head full of grey hair and a matching moustache.
“Ah, our newest farmer!” he chuckled lightly, “Welcome back, Bela! In case you've forgotten, I’m Lewis, the mayor of Pelican Town.”
His eyes twinkled mischievously, “You know, everyone’s been asking about you. It’s not every day that someone new moves in. And it's even rarer when someone comes back. It’s quite a big deal!”
Robin nodded in agreement. “With the increased taxes, more people have been leaving Pelican Town than staying.”
Mayor Lewis shot Robin a warning glance before continuing his welcome speech, “So, you’re moving into your grandfather’s old cottage.” He sighed deeply; eyes lost in thought as he remembered his old friend.
Bela offered him a gentle smile, “He mentioned that the two of you were old friends.”
Lewis returned the smile, “Yes, we were. Well, you've inherited a good house...very ‘rustic’.”
Robin chuckled, “Well, that’s one way to put it.”
“Oh, don’t be rude,” Lewis shook his head, “Don’t listen to her, Bela. Robin just wants you to hire her for upgrades.” Robin rolled her eyes playfully in response.
“Well,” Lewis directed his attention back to Bela. “You must be tired from your long journey. You should get some rest. Tomorrow, you ought to explore the Town Square and reintroduce yourself to some folks. The townspeople would appreciate that.”
With that, both Robin and Lewis took their leave of Riverland Farm.
Now, Bela thought, gazing at the acres of overgrown land. What the FUCK am I going to with all of this?
